One of the key technologies in developing hydrogen-enriched ironmaking operations is the control of the carburisation, melting, and dripping behaviour of the iron ore burden materials. When a hot compacted iron (HCI) is charged in the blast furnace or the FINEX Melter-Gasifier, iron oxide reduction, the reduced iron’s carburisation, and the melting of iron and slag occur successively. This study investigated the reduction, carburisation, melting and dripping behaviour of HCI under a COH2 gas mixture using the high-temperature X-ray radiographic technique. Under 100 per cent CO gas atmosphere, the dripping temperature was 1410°C. When 5 per cent H2 was introduced, the dripping temperature slightly decreased to 1400°C. Furthermore, the dripping temperature gradually increased as the H2 gas composition increased. As 30 per cent H2 was introduced, the dripping temperature reached 1414°C. The carbon concentration in the drained metal samples gradually increased with increasing H2 composition. It is considered that H2 decreased FeO content in the slag, yielding the increased melting temperature and viscosity of the slag. On the other hand, H2 accelerated the carburisation of the reduced iron by CO gas, enabling the homogenisation of the oxide materials to form a liquid phase. Therefore, it is considered that introducing H2 in the reactor is helpful to increase productivity and energy efficiency by accelerating the liquid phase’s formation.

"For moisture samples, the International Standard for iron ore sampling states the following: Moisture samples shall be processed as soon as possible and test portions weighed immediately. If this is not possible, samples shall be stored in non-absorbent airtight containers with a minimum of free air space to minimise any change in moisture content, but should be prepared without delay. ISO 3082 (2009)Prescribing what to do is of course easy. Putting it in practice is, however, a little more problematic.The iron ore industry has seen quite some changes in the last ten to 15 years, such as: a large increase in the volume of seaborne trade new ore types and blends coming onto the market new mines, processing plants and port facilities producing more and loading faster an increase in wet processed ore products a dramatic rise and then equally dramatic fall in the iron ore price followed by a recent recovery.All of the above have had an effect on sampling facilities. The large increase in volume coupled with ambitions such as labour efficiency, safer operations and higher precision has driven the installation and retrofitting of automated sampling and robotic sampling preparation plants in order to keep up with increased quality control.Designers of sampling facilities are invariably instructed to build plants that comply with ISO 3082. In general this means that the plants are compliant in respect of the number of primary increments, gross sample masses and sample division rules. The clause at the beginning of this abstract is mostly overlooked as it only appears in a section (4.1) describing the basic requirements of a sampling system.An error of 0.1 per cent in moisture changes the value of 1 Mt of iron ore at US$50/t by US$50 000. At 700 Mt/a of Australian iron ore exports, this is US$35 M. Frequently, errors from 0.5 to 1 per cent in moisture measurements are encountered.In comparison an error of 0.1 per cent Fe is US$0.081 (US$50/t and 62 per cent Fe base) per tonne, that is US$81 000 per Mt or about US$51 M for the same Australian annual iron ore exports.It is somewhat mystifying that we in the ISO Technical committees spend extraordinary energy (= money and time) on improving measurement techniques, whilst the big costs are in sampling errors. Stream sediment geochemical analyses from 140 mining company exploration surveys of the Coromandel, Northwest Nelson, Marlborough and Westland regions of New Zealand have been compiled from open file reports and entered on a database called REGCHEM (for Regional Exploration GeoCHEMistry). REGCHEM is supported by GEOEXPL, a custom-written computer software application which operates under the Microsoft Access relational database management system on a PC-type computer, The data are plotted as maps using the MapInfo geographic information system (GIS) package. Thresholds separating anomalous values from background values are determined using the PROBPLOT uni-variant statistical package, which enables the discrimination and modelling of several populations. Relevant REGCHEM data are being incorporated into a GIS for the Coromandel region as part of ongoing studies to develop mineral deposit and metallogenic models for the region, and to assess regional prospectivity.

Many underground mine void spaces are not suitable for human entry due to unprotected roofs, instability or having an unknown safety state (eg if they are many decades old). Investigations of these voids may nevertheless be important for general mine safety, for example to detect propagating collapses or water accumulation, prevent accidental intrusion by new developments or drilling to reassess old spaces for re-mining. Robots are an ideal technology for investigating these spaces, especially flying, rotary-wing robots that can access and map vertical structures and spaces while avoiding rocks, water and mud that have accumulated on void floors. To operate in underground mines, we are developing customised unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as well as interactive 3D virtual models of the vehicles and their underground environments for controlling vehicle operation and visualising incrementally gathered survey data. Using a game/simulation engine to provide an interactive interface for UAV operation makes it possible to orchestrate external spatial information and video feeds with in-game cameras for optimal visualisation that is not limited to the position, orientation or field of view of cameras mounted on the UAV. First and third-person points of view with respect to the UAV are provided, together with 2D and 3D gaze tracking to provide effective interfaces for geology and mine engineering experts without the need for specialist UAV piloting skills. Ongoing work is addressing the provision of greater levels of autonomy for these vehicles to support mapping well beyond the line of sight of operators and geological characterisation of rock surfaces using sensors mounted on them, including miniature X-ray fluorescence and Raman spectrometers. Laboratory testwork was carried out on an overall orebody composite, of 2.9 per cent Cu and 4.2 per cent Zn, prepared from drill core taken from the Currawong fine-grained, copper-zinc massive sulphide deposit near Benambra in Victoria. While 90 per cent of the copper was readily recovered in a concentrate of 20 per cent Cu, after grinding to 95 per cent passing 38 microns, zinc responded poorly to conventional flowsheet/reagent regimes. Experience elsewhere with the use of reverse cleaning, to separate pyrite from sphalerite, led to a series of tests in which better (but still modest)metallurgical results were obtained. The best result was a zinc recovery of 55 per cent in a concentrate of 50.5 per cent Zn. The major loss of zinc occurred in the reverse cleaning stage where the unit recovery of zinc was similar to pilot plant results achieved at Mount Isa Mines on similar feedstock. Diagnostic mineralogy suggested that an overall zinc recovery of 70 per cent was probably the practical upper limit, at a 50 per cent Zn grade.

This article presents a proposal for the rehabilitation of the mined area of the Mogiana quarry. The Mogiana quarry produces material used in civil construction and is situated in the Brazilian State of Spo Paulo in the kilometre six of the Mogf Mirim - Itapira highway. The mineral exploitation in the Mogiana quarry provokes modifications in the environment such as alterations in the relief, vegetation, quality of the air, water and landscape. Through previous study of the area it was verified that after the closure of the exploitation the mine should be occupied mainly by pasturage. At the closing of the mine the exploitation benches, berms and slopes in general as well as the surrounding areas should be covered with a layer of soil and vegetated with native species in order to mitigate the negative impacts caused by the mine. The rehabilitation project of the area is based on the probable future use of the area, located between agricultural cultivations and cattle creation. The great alteration of the relief and soil would make future use of the area for agriculture difficult. It is more suitable t0 animal creation, mainly cattle. The high and thick rock slopes originated by the mining should be covered by vegetation, where possible, to reduce the negative visual impact. Obviously several measures will be necessary to reduce the impacts on the environment during mining. The final and definitive reclamation will only be possible after abandonment of the area. The main aspects of this reclamation process will be discussed in this paper.

Run-of-Mine (ROM) stockpiles are the inventory of valuable materials extracted from the mine. Depending on the customer requests, a selective addition of ore from stockyards should be selected at the required tonnage. In the stockyard, stackers and reclaimers are the machines which load and unload ore, respectively. Currently, humans determine the reclaiming/stacking planning sequence in the stockyard by rules of thumb. However, this is a complex task subject to multiple operational constraints, such as where undesirable mineral properties should not exceed certain limits in a request. Human planning can lead to limited decision support and lower ability to consider the upcoming blends and requests. This kind of decision making can cause perturbations in the assumed profit and unexpected loss in practice. Therefore, an intelligent decision-maker and sequence planner would be highly valuable to automate stacking and reclaiming operations in practice. The benefits are reducing variability in decision-making and operation costs. This paper considers a stockyard with available mineral information in the stockpiles using load and dump locations from GPS data feeds. We present an optimisation problem to find a solution which results in reclaiming more ore in a shorter time. To solve the problem, we develop an automatic search strategy based on the greedy search algorithm independent of the type of machine used in reclaiming. The proposed method plans a sequence for stockyard recovery blend optimisation to meet multiple customer demands in a timeframe. Blend optimisation is subject to various constraints such as the elemental composition of the valuable materials and penalty elements. We present three case studies using EKA’s simulator, to fulfil two to four requests from four stockpiles. We compare the obtained results with a pilgrim step reclaiming heuristic and we show how our proposed search strategy outperforms the current strategy used in practice.

Wollongong* is Australia's largest single centre of mining and metallurgy. Wollongong's total employment in manufacturing of basic metal products (over 26,500 in 1972/1973) was almost 50 per cent higher than that of Newcastle and double that of any other Australian city. Although the great bulk of this employment was in steelmaking, Wollongong's copper industry was also a significant employer. Wollongong's total employment in mining (4,900 in 1971) was second only to that of Newcastle among Australian mining centres. Although the bulk of Wollongong's mining is of coal, there is also considerable mining of blue metal, sand and clay. During 2015 and 2016, the authors conducted a number of surveys, workshops and reviews of ventilation and gas management practices in Australian underground coalmines. The study was funded by ACARP with a brief to identify gaps in ventilation and gas management practices for current and future needs, and to prepare a road map for change that would assist in delivering improvements.The study found that despite many examples of leading practice, gas and ventilation management is not afforded the attention and priority that is warranted and that this must be remedied if future operational performance targets are to be achieved and the safety of the industry protected. The Runruno Gold Project is located on the island of Luzon, approximately 200 miles north of Manilla in the Philippines. The mine is an open cut operation and uses the proven BIOX® and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes to recover gold, and the ASTER™ process for detoxification of the CIL residue prior to discharge to the Residue Storage Impoundment (RSI). Work to date has defined a mineral resource of 1.39 million ounces (Moz) of gold, and the operation will produce 96 700 oz of gold per annum over a mine life of 10.4 years. The BIOX circuit is designed to treat 140 000 t/y of concentrate with a design capacity of 404 t/d of concentrate at a design sulfide sulfur grade of 17% S2-.The Runruno BIOX Plant is the first application of the Outotec BIOX Generation III design principles, focussing on ease of operation and maintainability. During development and implementation, the project team focussed on identifying opportunities to optimise the capital efficiency while not compromising on the operability or overall efficiency of the process or the equipment. The BIOX plant also incorporates the latest developments in the design of the BIOX agitators for more efficient mixing and gas dispersion. This paper will discuss some of the critical aspects and decisions taken during the development and implementation of the BIOX Process at the Runruno Gold Project. The paper will highlight some of the factors affecting the commissioning process as well as the improvements seen through the introduction of the Generation III BIOX design principles. Underground mining for gold began in Beaconsfield in 1877 and development of the Tasmania Mine saw the sinking of multiple shafts, including the Hart Shaft over the ensuing 35 years. The mine closed in 1914 at a depth of 455 m due to prevailing economics, eventually reopening in 1999. The modern mine closed in 2012 after extending the mine from a historical depth of 455 m to the exhaustion of the modern Ore Reserve at a depth of 1210 m. West Tamar Council took over the lease for the immediate area around the Hart Shaft as an extension of the adjacent museum. The Hart Shaft and above ground structures became a significant drawcard for visitors. Tasmania was affected by sustained wet weather during May, June and July of 2016 which caused severe flooding and significant Statewide damage. This uncharacteristically intense wet weather caused saturation of the ground surrounding the Hart Shaft. Eventual shaft failure was first identified in August 2016. The failure of the shaft occurred at approximately 50 m below surface and resulted in a plug of material completely blocking the shaft. Significant surface subsidence affecting the surface infrastructure ensued. Due to the unstable nature of the surrounding material, it was determined that addressing the failure above the blockage would not provide a permanent solution to prevent the continued flow of material into the shaft. Many options to stabilise the shaft were considered, however it was assessed that a concrete plug in the shaft in competent ground at a depth of 100 m below surface and well below the blockage, would provide the only long-term solution. Man-entry was considered unsafe. The solution to access ultimately entailed filling the entire shaft with granular fill up to 100 m depth to act as formwork for a concrete plug. The rising mains at 400 mm and 250 mm diameter, which remained in place in the shaft, provided the avenue for placing the fill and ultimately, the concrete plug. Once the plug was in place the remainder of the shaft up to the underside of the blockage and over the top of the blockage to the surface was successfully filled with a combination of more granular fill and flowable cement stabilised sand. With the launch of Immersive Technologies' next generation of Advanced Equipment Simulators for the mining industry, correlating and influencing safety, productivity and maintenance with operator competency improvements is now made even more effective. In early 2008, Immersive assembled a project team to investigate the potential linkages between operator competency and performance. Advanced Equipment Simulator Users with a range of sophistication were interviewed and consulted. The result was new and enhanced 'value realisation' programs to directly assist mine sites to deliver the expected return on investment (ROI) from simulators and operator competency development. In just over one year, 29 mine sites around the world have benefited from 34 completed programs. Case studies have been compiled to demonstrate the impact of the implementation of this approach, including at the following operations: Anglo Coal - Callide (Australia), Freeport McMoRAN - Grasburg (Indonesia), Equinox Minerals - Lumwana (Zambia), Peabody Energy - Cabllo (USA), and Xstrata - Lomas Bayas (Chile). Significant performance improvements have been achieved including: reductions of 47 per cent in gear shifting and 37 per cent in over speed errors, improvements of 68 per cent in park break errors and 12 per cent in spotting time, and increase of 54 per cent in passing emergency fire handling competency tests. This presentation draws on these case studies to clearly demonstrate the linkage between improved operator competency through the implementation of training programs tailored around Advanced Equipment Simulators and production performace measured by a range of standard metrics at mines around the world.

I propose to outline the main social changes which are taking place and their impact on the Minerals Industry. Also the changing way we do business and what are the skills needed to manage that change and diversity. How are Associations and Institutes responding to this ever changing environment? More specifically, what is my Vision for the Institute to assist professionals to achieve greater and continuing professional excellence in their chosen professions?

This work describes a novel mapping technique that allows the direct overlay of calculated local phase equilibria on micrographs of the physical system. The technique demonstrated integrates FactSage™, ver 8.2 (by Thermfact Ltd. and GTT-Technologies) phase equilibria calculations with mapped compositions determined by Scanning Electron Microscope – Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) to visually express calculated properties while preserving the spatial information of the sample. The developed methodology is used to analyse interrupted blast furnace softening and melting tests containing mixed burdens of lump and sinter. Tests are interrupted at 1300C and cooled to room temperature for analysis. Phases present at room temperature are analysed to infer the liquid fraction and phases present at high temperature. Analysis of the interface regions between the dissimilar burdens allows insights to be gained into the interaction mechanism. During the transition from solid to liquid, migration and interaction of liquid oxide across the interfaces of the dissimilar burdens has been observed and demonstrated to impact softening and melting performance. Specifically, interaction of the oxides generated by lump (primarily FeO, SiO2 and Al2O3) and sinter (primarily FeO, CaO, SiO2, Al2O3 and MgO) are analysed, and the occurrence of a range of new mineral phases such as merwinite, melilite, olivine and bredigite observed.

The mining licence for the Macraes gold mine places emphasis on the progressive rehabilitation of the land to a state compatible with the landscape and environment that existed prior to mining activities taking place. The shallow soils and hostility of the environment dictate that choices of plant species should focus on persistence rather than high productivity, choices that are made easier by observing the vegetation patterns that have developed naturally within the area, by recontouring landforms to integrate with the surrounding countryside and the use of appropriate plants and establishment techniques.

The Government of Canada recently passed a new regulation to control the liquid discharges from metal mines in Canada. The Metal Mining Effluent Regulation of the Federal Fisheries Act will come into force within the next six months. As a result the Ontario Regional Office of Environment Canada has developed a compliance promotion program to accompany the new regulation. How the mines implement the regulation will be key to its success. This paper will briefly outline the components of this regulation, including the reporting structure, the discharge parameters and limits, as well as the requirement for the mines to conduct long-term environmental effects monitoring on their effluent discharge. The presentation will give a brief account of the compliance promotion program, and then focus on the spill trends from Ontario mining operations. The province of Ontario has the largest concentration of metal mining operations in the country with approximately 40 active mines.
