A model has been developed as part of the AMIRA P420 Gold Processing Technology Project to simulate the recovery of gold by centrifugal gravity devices. The model (which is available online) uses the simulation methodology developed by Laplante et al (1995) to predict gravity recoverable gold (GRG) recovery under varying operating conditions and circuit configurations. In addition to predicting GRG recovery, the model also predicts the GRG content and size distribution of the cyclone overflow and underflow. The predicted overflow GRG content and size distribution can be used as inputs for a leaching model in which size dependent leaching rates are applied for each size class of GRG and non-gravity recoverable gold (non-GRG) in the cyclone overflow, allowing size-by-size leach recoveries to be determined for GRG and non-GRG. The application of the gravity model and leaching model are demonstrated using a case study. The simulated gravity recovery and leaching performance showed excellent agreement with the measured values. The developed models can be used to assess the sensitivity of gravity gold and leach recoveries to varying feed GRG content, GRG size distribution, gravity circuit feed rate, classifier performance and leach residence time. The described methods can be used to optimise new and existing gravity and leaching circuits.

A research project was commissioned by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) to improve the understanding of tailgate strata mechanics and to provide a more rigorous engineering basis for tailgate support design. A deformation mechanism termed æskew roofÆ was defined which relates the regional influence of differential horizontal strata movement (shear) about longwall extraction to gateroads. Confirmation of the mechanism was achieved by field investigations which included measurement of the shear displacement along weak interfaces. Under geological and mining conditions where the skew roof mechanism operated, strata units were found to move progressively further towards the goaf with height into the roof. 3D numerical modelling was used to assess the major geotechnical factors controlling the mechanism and to determine appropriate support strategies within a æskew roofÆ environment including the role of cables versus standing supports. The skew mechanism is considered relevant to; all roadways in the vicinity of longwall extraction including the faceline itself, chain pillar design, and support design.

In this study the bonding within reduced titanomagnetite-coal compacts was investigated. The aim of the study was to better understand the binding mechanisms in the reduced compacts and, based on this understanding, to improve on their strength.Titanomagnetite ore was combined with sub-bituminous coal to form compacts. The compacts were then reduced by heating in a thermogravimetric furnace (TGA) to temperatures between 1000 - 1300°C under argon. The reaction progress was monitored by measuring the weight loss with time. The reduced compacts were found to have low strength in compression testing. The main form of bonding between the reduced titanomagnetite particles in the compact was by the formation of a slag-like material. Increasing the fi nal reduction temperature was found to have a profound effect on the strength of the compacts by promoting the formation of this slag-like material.Attempts to improve the strength of the compacts were made by changing two variables, the type of coal and the addition of rice husks. The addition of coking coal gave reacted samples that had little strength, while the addition of rice husks may have enhanced the strength of the reduced compacts.

The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of MgCO3 was investigated using isothermal experiments performed in a thermogravimetric analyzer under a nitrogen atmosphere at 380¦, 400¦, 450¦ and 480¦C. The weight loss data as a function of time were modified to give the fraction that reacted (ß) and the rate of reaction (dß/dt) vs. time (t). Kinetic analysis of the experimental results, using three different methods, showed that diffusion predominates the MgCO3 decomposition over the investigated temperature range, with the data being best fitted by JanderÆs equation ([1−(1−ß)1/3]2=kt). The activation energy was estimated by Arrhenius plots using both the initial reaction rates and rate constants from fitting the above equation. The values estimated were 27.1 and 171.4 kJ/mol respectively.

The lignite resource in the southern part of the South Island is New ZealandÆs largest source of indigenous primary energy. The ten deposits evaluated by the Liquid Fuels Trust Board (LFTB) have a total recoverable reserve of 6.2 billion tones equivalent to 74 000 PJ of energy or 20 times the original energy content of the Maui gas field. Updating the economics of the original LFTB studies indicates that lignite could be mined for between NZ$1.0 and 3.0/GJ. Its conversion to synthesis gas for production of petroleum products, chemical methanol, ammonia/urea fertiliser or electricity would be in the national benefit and likely to be commercially economic at todayÆs product prices.

For any gold deposit-based geometallurgical study, the collection and processing of representative samples for gold grade and recovery tests is critical. Sampling protocols should be designed to suit the style of orebody in question. The proportion and size of gold particles has a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling protocols and metallurgical recovery processes employed. Studies focussing on ore mineralogy and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required. Key issues are the presence of gold particle clustering (important for sampling optimisation) and proportion of coarse versus fine to refractory gold. X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a radiographic technique that produces high-resolution 3D computerised models of objects based on density distribution. The ‘virtual’ specimens are made up of voxels, the 3D equivalent of pixels each assigned a grey value based on X-ray absorption. This paper presents the results of recent research on the imaging of in situ gold particles in a coarse gold-bearing ore. The technique shows promise as a rapid non-destructive method for preliminary characterisation to facilitate more detailed studies. Early and rapid gold particle determination enables sampling protocol optimisation and metallurgical recovery parameters to be defined prior to detailed feasibility studies

Dimension stone is the term generally given to rock used in building construction. During early European history in Otago, locally available dimension stone products were easily obtained. Crude rock shelters built on river banks with schist rock within Central Otago soon gave way to more established and sophisticated permanent homesteads constructed with the same materials. Victorian architectural achievement is celebrated in Otago with many fine bluestone block buildings. When the University Council decided to build substantially in stone, it narrowly escaped disaster. It was well known at the time that brick in Dunedin was of an inferior quality and that it soon wasted. Rev Dr Stuart said before the 1879 Commission that æthe Council had some old-world notions and liked to have the University with some architectural styleÆ. Contemporary utilisation of dimension stone is generally restricted by expense to a simple veneer. Stone products produced from Otago quarries have found ready markets in other areas in New Zealand , particularly prior to the share market crash in 1987.

The MMG Century mine, which is the largest zinc/lead mine in Australia, began operating in 1999 and ceased mining from the open pit in July 2015, with processing completed in early 2016. Closure plans were developed from 2006, and detailed planning for closure commenced in early 2011 with the appointment of a dedicated closure planning resource. The site will continue to be managed during the active and passive closure phases to complete rehabilitation commitments and demonstrate that closure completion criteria have been achieved.Completion of the mining/processing phase of the project provides an opportunity to reflect on successes, missed opportunities and lessons learnt with respect to planning and execution of mine closure. This paper highlights examples of success at Century and also identifies key learnings and areas for improvement in progressive closure outcomes. Specific examples examine mine planning and execution involving bulk movement of waste rock and construction of permanent waste encapsulation landforms. The paper also provides recommendations for other sites that are planning for closure.Decisions made during the operational phase of the project life can result in a significant increase in closure liability and reduce the likelihood of achieving lease relinquishment. Western New Zealand can be regarded as a rifted continuation of eastern Australia. Detailed studies of units previously considered to have trans-Tasman correlations are being undertaken within the FRST Programme Mineral Wealth of NZ and its EEZ to test specific connections, and thus add to the exploration framework of NZ. Correlation of two major episodes of granitic magmatism are currently being investigated. These represent the oldest (mid Paleozoic) and youngest (Early Cretaceous) magmatic events that conjoined Australia and New Zealand are believed to have in common.

The Eriez HydroFloat® is a flotation device capable of recovering significantly coarser and lessliberated particles than is possible using a conventional mechanical flotation cell. Originally developed for industrial and bulk mineral beneficiation, the HydroFloat® is attracting increasing interest as a means of increasing the required grind size for metalliferous ore flotation. Doing so would reduce the costs of processing complex ores, either by decreasing the energy required to grind the flotation feed or by increasing the throughput achievable with a given comminution circuit. Processing coarser particles would also result in coarser waste streams, potentially improving the mechanical and hydraulic performance of the waste dams that they are sent to. Recent work at pilot – and industrial-scale has proven the potential of the HydroFloat® technology to achieve these gains in metalliferous applications. However, in order to realise the full potential of the HydroFloat® technology, it is necessary to understand not just its performance but also the drivers for that performance. Doing so will allow the design and operation of HydroFloat® devices to be optimised for different ores and applications. For this work, a HydroFloat® pilot rig was deployed to a coppergold plant in Australia and was used to investigate the effect of stream and operating conditions for treating the tailings stream of one of the plant’s rougher flotation cells. Under each set of operating conditions, samples were taken of the HydroFloat® feed, tailings and concentrate streams, and processed to yield the grade and recovery achieved by the device. At the same time, the bubble size and bed behaviour inside the device were measured. This paper presents preliminary relationships observed between the operating conditions and the performance of the HydroFloat® cell, and thus suggests a range of possible drivers for the measured coarse particle flotation performance.

The Water Delivery Alliance (WDA) was established to design, construct and commission the pump station and desalinated water delivery pipeline to link the desalination plant on the Kurnell Peninsula (constructed by others) with the existing distribution network at Erskineville, Sydney, Australia. The WDA consisted of McConnell Dowell Corporation Ltd (Macdow), Bovis Lend Lease Pty Ltd (BLL), Kellogg Brown and Root Pty Ltd (KBR), Worleyparsons Ltd (WOR), Environmental Resources Management Group Inc (ERM) and Sydney Water Corporation (SWC).Sydney’s Desalination Project is one of the initiatives to secure Sydney’s water supply against the effects of climate change, population growth and drought. The desalination plant, 100 per cent powered by renewable energy, can supply up to 250 million litres of water per day (mld), which is up to 15 per cent of Sydney’s water needs. The project involved the construction of an 18 km pipeline with an ultimate capacity of 500 mld to accommodate any future increase in the output of the desalination plant.The Alliance procured three full-face tunnel boring machines (TBM) from Herrenknecht AG to construct the 6.5 km of tunnel that would provide a conduit for the DN1800 welded mild steel cement mortar lined (MSCL) pipeline at a number of locations along the route. Nineteen shafts and 16 tunnels were required to complete this work.Crucially one of the TBM drives involved construction of a tunnel into Botany Bay under protected marine life habitats; enabling the connection of the MSCL water carrier pipeline into the dredged section of pipeline underwater, approximately 800 m off-shore in Botany Bay.This paper details the retrieval of the 17.4 m long TBM from the ocean floor upon completion of the Botany Bay tunnel allowing for subsequent use on the Project. Elements covered in the paper include the 835 m tunnel, design and construction techniques for the tunnel and recovery, and details of the methods used to install the DN1800 water carrier pipeline.

One of the main factors affecting the suitability of an ore for autogenous grinding is the ore’s competency, ie providing enough critical stones for the grinding process. Several experimental test routines exist and are used for assessing the viability of the ore for autogenous grinding. However, very little attention is given to the generation of fatigue in large stones experiencing repeated shocks in the mill. To investigate this, large pebbles sampled from an industrial autogenous grinding mill running hard and soft ores were categorised based on the grinding energy. From the pebbles, small drill core samples were prepared and went through a series of fatigue cycle tests. Both hard and soft ores showed similar average resistance to failure in compression tests, but the hard ore had a consistent resistance with lower variations. The cores were scanned by XCT before and in-between fatigue tests at the highest reachable resolution, 1.5 µm voxel size. The outcome showed that a higher number of micro-cracks were visible in the soft ore compared to the hard ore. The frequency of micro-crack development in the soft ore may be the reason for its lower specific grinding energy compared to the hard ore. It is obvious that for realistic conditions in an autogenous grinding mill, stones are pre-weakened by fatigue before they fracture. Therefore, shortcut methods focusing only on running tests on fresh and small samples may operate in unrealistic conditions by ignoring the fatigue phenomenon. This is even more important for ores that are on the borderline to be considered as competent for autogenous milling.

Magnetite orebodies generally means mining lower grade iron ores, crushing and grinding with significant energy costs in processing and the capital costs being significantly higher than for direct shipping ores (DSO). Overseas, the mining and processing of magnetite ores has a long history of production due to the lack of DSO deposits. This raises the question as to why the new magnetite projects have been so problematic and also whether there is a future for the long list of potential magnetite projects in Australia.The quality of the magnetite concentrate product is superior to most DSO products and the magnetite contains energy benefits when converted to hematite in sintering or pelletising. The industry’s hopes for new projects have been dashed and questions are being raised as to the financial viability of such projects.A comparison of Grange Resources Savage River, Arrium’s Project Magnet, the Sino Iron Project and Gindalbie’s Karara Iron Project is used to understand the differences between the projects and why some are more successful than others.CITATION:Connelly, D, 2015. The raw material handling complex at the Durgapur steel plant provides iron ore, crushed coke and flux to two sinter plants. Either some facilities were not envisaged or not properly designed before the project stage which caused problems during operation of the plant. The absence of an in situ roll turning facility, used to increase maintenance activities for disassembly, transportation of rolls to central machine shop and assembly of rolls, led to decreased crusher availability and increased activities for the maintenance crew. The provision of a smaller vibro feeder/screen in place of a suitable sized screen caused jamming of the screen deck, adversely affecting screening efficiency and the crushing index of crushed coke. Some design modifications and developmental work was undertaken, such as the development and installation of an in situ roll turning facility in the existing limited space, achieving low feed (0.1 - 0.2 mm/rev), lower cutting speed of 30 - 40 m/minute for 350 BHN hard roll, which was also a difficult engineering challenge to bring within the tolerable limit of vibration. This was successfully achieved. Modifications to the screen deck, introduction of differential speed crushing and modification to the vibro screen and vibro feeder for uniform distribution of feed have been incorporated. These innovative design modifications to the in situ roll turning have led to a drastic decrease in maintenance activities and an improvement in the crushing index. Modifications to the screen have resulted in the elimination of jamming and improved screening. Modifications to the vibro screen before the primary crushers and to the vibro feeder before the secondary crushers have prevented excessive wear in the central portion of rolls, ultimately leading to increased roll life. Incorporation of differential speed crushing has resulted in an increased crushing index and decreased generation of micro fines. All the above modifications have led to distinct improvements in equipment availability, increased roll life and a decrease in maintenance activities and improvement in crushed coke granulametry, ultimately resulting in improved productivity and quality of iron ore agglomeration at the sinter plant. The innovative design modifications mentioned above are discussed in detail in this paper.

Whilst the fossil fuel-based power industry moves towards carbon capture and storage (CCS) or so-called 'geosequestration', the minerals industry should adapt to reap the benefits of the new technology. If CCS becomes viable, the door is open to potential key developments in mineral processing. For example, truly continuous steelmaking could at last be realised using natural or manufactured gas combined with generic melt circulation. Iron ore fines would form a thin molten layer moving countercurrent to the gaseous reductant on one side of a melt circulation loop with efficient post-combustion without deleterious effects of slag accumulation on the other. This eliminates oxygen steelmaking because carbon has no access to the circulating molten iron. Steelmaking merely requires addition of the appropriate low level of carbon and in-line impurities removal to meet product specification. Concerning non-ferrous smelting, nothing short of virtually zero gas emission will be acceptable in the future. For dolomite-hosted Zn/Pb sulfide ores, typified by those in the Carpentaria region of Northern Australia, the way forward proposed is sulfur fixation at the mine site employing the highly exothermic reaction of SO2 with dolomite, followed by encapsulation of sulfated dolomite in fused ore slag. This releases enough energy for direct ore smelting to individual metal products. However, without CCS the strategy would be unacceptable because of greenhouse gas emissions. The scheme is advocated for direct ore smelting at McArthur River. As a result, the environmental problems of disposal of flotation tailings are avoided. Also, highly energy intensive ultra-fine grinding is eliminated, as indeed froth flotation itself, with overall very significant energy savings and exceptionally high increases in metals recovery. Zinc and lead recoveries approaching 99 per cent are predicted to be entirely feasible.

Mine pit slopes in the Pacific Rim are a geotechnical challenge because of the complex geology in which they are developed. Mines are currently being fast-tracked to meet the increase in commodity prices, often resulting in some reduction in ground studies and short-cutting of design procedures. In addition, the resources boom means that skilled personnel are in relatively short supply. At a time when mine pits are getting bigger and deeper, and the engineering is getting more demanding, there is an increased demand on managers to effectively implement the work.   Experience both in New Zealand and the Philippines, display the complex range of geological environments in which pits are being excavated. Working in these conditions has shown that successful geotechnical design requires a strong geotechnical model based on sound geology. An appropriate level of investigation and analyses results in a certain level of understanding for the mine design. There is a point where additional expenditure (on investigation and analyses) is not warranted based on the expected minimal impact on decreasing the level of perceived risk on the project. For most projects in our experience the analytical methods and complexity of geotechnical assessment changes increases as the level of knowledge grows.

The distribution of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits through time is episodic, involving relatively short time intervals of apparent high productivity and long intervals of low productivity. This distribution is principally related to the geodynamic evolution of the Earth. The vast majority of these deposits is associated with the assembly of supercontinents and form along convergent margins, generally in back-arc basins or rifted arcs. This contrasts with the distribution of black smoker deposits, which presently form along both convergent margins, particularly in the western Pacific, and divergent margins at mid-ocean ridges. However, the latter environment is rarely preserved deep into the geological past.There also appear to be systematic patterns in a number of other features of volcanic-hosted massive deposits through time. Deposits hosted by mafic-dominated successions are dominant in Archean to Proterozoic rocks, whereas deposits hosted by felsic-dominated successions are most common in Phanerozoic rocks. Geochemical characteristics of felsic rocks within the host successions and ore lead and sulfur isotope data of the ores have also changed with time. This suggests changes in the process of subduction and/or changes in the characteristics of the over-riding plate with time, consistent with isotopic and geologic evidence for greater reworking of pre-existing crust during the Phanerozoic.Other secular changes that are reflected in characteristics of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits include the redox state and salinity of coeval oceans. As an example, both the abundance of sulfate minerals and sulfur isotope patterns reflect the development of periods of anoxic conditions over time, with major intervals of anoxia reflected by a virtual lack or low abundance of sulfate minerals in volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits in the Mesoarchean to the Palaeoproterozoic, and shorter intervals since.CITATION:Huston, D L, Eglington, B, Pehrsson, S, Piercey, S and Doublier, M, 2015. Gold mining in Australia and globally has a long and variable history. In recent years, due to ongoing public concern over long-term environmental impacts, the mining industry globally has been moving towards a more sustainable framework, presented as the æMining, Minerals and Sustainable DevelopmentÆ (MMSD) framework at the Johannesburg Earth Summit in 2002. There are a number of fundamental issues and concerns with assessing the sustainability of mining. Firstly, long-term trends show that ore grades for almost all metals and minerals will continue to decline (some rapidly so), increasing waste rock is being produced due to the trend towards large-scale open cut mining and more complex ores are now commonly being developed. The impact of these trends on the resource intensity, or unit cost, of gold production is of major concern as it could lead to an increase in energy, water and reagent consumption and greenhouse emissions per unit gold produced. A detailed compilation of these fundamental sustainability indices for gold mining has been undertaken, and is presented with respect to indices over time, ore grade and ore throughput. A clear observation is that the resource intensity of gold mining is extremely sensitive to the ore grade, with energy, water and cyanide consumption and greenhouse emissions rising significantly as ore grade decreases. Based on the gold ore resources at operating mines and other known gold deposits, it is most likely that the average gold ore grade will continue to decline, leading to increased resource intensity and consequent environmental impacts (assuming no breakthrough new technologies occur). These findings are of major importance to understanding the sustainability of gold mining. The final judgement of the sustainability of gold mining therefore must take into account the sensitivity of the ore grade in the resource intensity of gold production.

"In this study, physical, chemical and microscopic characteristics of high phosphorus oolitic hematite were studied firstly. Based on which, the new methods of high phosphorus hematite used in the æsolid state reduction by rotary hearth furnace - magnetic separationÆ and iron nugget by rotary hearth furnace direct reduction processes were discussed. The results showed that high temperature, low basicity and high carbon content is conducive for the apatite in iron ore to reduce into molten iron, but not conducive to the removal of phosphorus. Through optimisation of process parameters, dephosphorisation rate of high phosphorus hematite is more than 60 per cent by æsolid state reduction roasting-magnetic separationÆ process while that is up to 80 per cent by iron nugget process. Geological Parameters Controlling the Improvement of Manufactured Sand Using Vertical Shaft Impact Crushers Instead of Cone Crushers Natural sand is a limited resource. In Sweden the total use of natural sand and gravel is around 20 million tonnes per year and the goal is to halve the use of this resource in the near future. Most of this natural sand is used for concrete production, so the consequence of this goal is that more and more concrete must be produced with manufactured sand. The bedrock of Sweden consists mainly of granites and gneisses, rock types mainly composed of various amounts of quartz, feldspar and mica. Manufactured sand from these materials generally contains rather flaky and elongated grains, and there are few types of granite that can be used as manufactured sand in concrete without increasing the amount of cement by eight to ten per cent. A Vertical Shaft Impact crusher (VSI) is commonly used to improve the shape of coarse aggregate particles. Research has shown that it is even possible to improve the shape in aggregate fractions less than 1 mm for some rock types. The aim of this project was to investigate which geological parameters control the improvement of manufactured sand when using VSI-crushers instead of the traditionally used cone crusher. In order to do this eight rock types of granitic composition were investigated. The selection of rock materials for the tests was based on grain size and mica content. A 4 - 8 mm fraction of each material was used for the tests. The characterisation of the shape of the material was performed using image analysis applied on microscopic images. The results showed that the VSI-crusher had improved the shape of all materials down to 0.036 mm, except for one rock sample. According to these results granites with low mica content and relatively high content of feldspars have the best prerequisites to produce manufactured sand for concrete with suitable geometric characteristics, and if these materials are crushed with a VSI crusher they almost show the same characteristics as natural sand.
