THIS investigation was undertaken to determine, if possible, the relation between static and dynamic tensile tests as measured by the work required to break test specimens slowly, in a tensile testing machine, and rapidly, by means of a falling weight. It was hoped that the investigation would throw some light on the role played by ductility under different rates of application of load. FIG. 1.-STRESS-STRAIN DIAGRAM. OF all the qualities that are essential in a good cigar tobacco none is quite so important as the burn. This term is general and includes many points, the most important of which are evenness of burn, color of ash, firmness and coherence of ash, and fire-holding capacity. The fire-holding capacity refers to the length of time the leaf or cigar will continue to, glow after ignition. Chlorides tend to prevent complete combustion and products are formed thereby that are injurious to the flavor and aroma. On the other hand, the carbonates of the alkalies, particularly of potassium, aid the combustion and increase the fire-holding capacity. Barth1 thought that the harmful effect of the chlorides was due to their fusing and coating the tobacco, thereby preventing complete combustion. Schlosing,2 Nessler,3 and Garner,4 suggested widely different theories to account for the favorable action of potassium salts. In order to study carefully the action of the various salts upon the course of combustion of the cigar a knowledge of the temperature of the burning cigar is necessary. Lehmann5 who seems to be the only investigator who has made any attempt to determine the temperature of a burning cigar gives 480° C. as the maximum temperature which he recorded. It is evident, however, that his measurements were in error, probably on account of the method and apparatus used, since the lowest visible red corresponds to a temperature of about 575° C.

THIS meeting was held at the home of the Institute in the United Engineering Society Building, 29. West 39th St., New York, N. Y., Feb. 18 to 21, 1908. The first session, held in the large auditorium Tuesday evening, Feb. 18, was called to order at 8 p.m. by Prof. Henry M. Howe, Past-President of the Institute, who welcomed the members and guests in a few cordial and well-chosen remarks. The following papers, accompanied by lantern-illustrations, were presented in oral abstract by their authors Swedenborg and Humboldt, by R. W. Raymond, New York, N. Y. Electric Power in Steel Mills, by David B. Rushmore and Karl A. Pauly, Syracuse, N. Y. At the close of the session, an informal reception in the offices of the Institute was tendered to members and guests. The second session, held in Assembly Room No. 1 in the same building, Wednesday, Feb. 19, was called to order at 10 a.m. by Prof. Robert H. Richards, Past-President of the Institute. Before proceeding with the papers on iron and steel, which were scheduled for presentation at this session, Mr. F. E. Junge, a representative of the gas-engine and electric motor industry of Berlin, Germany, gave a short oral discussion of the paper by Mr. Rushmore and Mr. Pauly, Electric Power in Steel Mills. Printed copies of the paper, Uniform Nomenclature of Iron and Steel, were distributed among the members and guests present, and the request was made for a later discussion of this important subject by letter. This paper constitutes the Report of Committee No. 24, of the International Association for Testing Materials, which was presented at the Brussels Congress in 1906. Although it is obvious that in any flotation process we must have a froth, in recent years the development of collecting reagents has caused the possibilities of better frothing agents to be overlooked. Some investigators have even gone so far as to say that the number of satisfactory frothing agents was sufficient. A little consideration will show, however, that the reagents available in the past were far from ideal frothers. The properties of an ideal frother for flotation work may be set down as follows: 1. It must form in low concentrations a copious but not too persistent froth. 2. It must be insensitive to hydrogen-ion concentration of the pulp; that is, it must froth equally well in an acid or alkaline medium. 3. It must be insensitive to salts, even in high concentration. 4. It must be absolutely noncollecting to both sulfides and nonsulfides. 5. Its frothing properties must not be affected by collecting reagents, including soap, the most generally used nonsulfide collector. 6. It must readily emulsify and disperse any insoluble collecting agent that is likely to be used. Clearly the existing frothers do not qualify. Pine oil, for example, is an acceptable frother for many purposes but if used in soap flotation a delicate balance between pine oil and soap must be struck because, as pointed out by Coghill1, these two reagents are incompatible in certain concentrations. The objections to soap itself as a frother are obvious, and the cresols and their substitution products all have some collecting power and very little emulsifying power. The mechanism of frothing in flotation was early explained on the basis of the Harkins-Langmuir theory of oriented molecules.2 These investigators showed that if an organic compound having an unsym-metrical molecule (in which one end of the molecule contained water-

RECENT advances in the fields of chemistry, biology, and metallurgy have confronted the analytical chemist with an entirely new set of problems. Development of plastics and synthetics has brought about a need, not only for adequate methods for their analysis but also for the various raw materials entering into their manufacture. The remarkable advance made in biochemical and agricultural research resulting from the use of isotopes as tracers or "tagged atoms" has established the necessity for the development of methods for the concentration of natural isotopes and for a means for their analysis. Similarly the advent of new and complex alloys calls for accurate analytical methods. Fortunately the analytical chemist has been able to meet some of these new demands by adapting to his purposes an instrument which has long been the most exclusive toy of the physicists. Solubility and the chemical properties of the atoms, which have always served as the basis for chemical analysis, do not enter into this new technique. Instead, momentum, defined as mass times velocity, is utilized as the means for the separation of atoms or mass groups.

Fram a study of 63 systematic alloy modifications it was found that molybdenum, tungsten, and columbium, added individually or simultaneously, and increases in chromium cause major improvements in 1200°F rupture strengths of Cr-Ni-Co-Fe base alloys. Rupture strengths were a function of the effect of composition modifications on both the inherent creep resistance and the amount of deformation the alloy would tolerate before fracture. THIS paper describes the results of an investigation of a series of alloys with systematic variations of the chemical composition of the following basic alloy: C, 0.15: Mn, 1.7; Si, 0.5; Cr, 20.0; NI, 20.0: Co, 20.0: Mo, 3.0; W, 2.0; Cb, 1.0; N, 0.12; Fe, 32.0 pct. The 62 modifications of this alloy were produced under conditions which minimized all factors influencing properties at high temperatures except composition. Melting, fabrication, and heat treatment were carefully maintained constant. Stress-rupture properties at 1200°F were used as the primary criteria of evaluation of the alloy. The objective of the study was to obtain data for determining the fundamental role of the influence of alloying elements on properties of heat-resistant alloys at high temperatures. In addition the results should be useful in determining optimum chemical compositions, the sensitivity of properties to variations in composition, and the degree to which alloy content could be reduced while retaining worthwhile properties. It is difficult or impossible to develop correlations between properties at high temperatures and systematic variations in chemical composition from published data for wrought heat-resistant alloys developed for gas turbines.' ' The main reason for this is the extreme dependence of the properties on conditions of treatment of the alloys." In most cases variation in final treatments between alloys so influences the properties that the influence of chemical composition is obscured. In addition it is recognized Table I. The development of heat-resistant alloys has been based on the gradual accumulation of data roughly related to composition from extensive testing programs. There is every reason to believe that in most cases the optimum compositions have been achieved by this procedure in the alloys commercially available. There are, however, very little data showing the influence of systematic variations of composition free from the influence of other factors, particularly for alloys of the type investigated. Several investigators of cast alloys have demonstrated compositional effects, notably Grant,1-6 Epremian,t Guy,8 and Harder and Gow.9 Sykes10 eviewed the work on the wrought alloy Rex 78 and the systematic variations of carbon, copper, molybdenum, and cobalt leading to the development of the stronger Rex 337A alloy. From the papers by Wilson11 and Henry12 it is possible to deduce the beneficial effect of substituting cobalt for iron in 0.45 pct C-20 pct Cr-20 pct Ni-4 pct Mo-4 pct W- 4 pct Cb alloys. Wilson mentioned but did not present the extensive compositional studies involved in developing these alloys. Binder" showed optimum properties for 3, 2, and I pct, respectively, for molybdenum, tungsten, and columbium in 20 pct Cr-20 pct Ni-20 pct Co-30 pct Fe alloys for limited systematic variations of these

Eight laboratory-prepared aqueous base drilling muds representing common mud types, and 15 aqueous base drilling muds sampled in the field, have been used in an experimental investigation of the relationship between the streaming potential developed across a mud filter cake and the differential pressure causing filtrate flow. It has been established that the relationship is of the form, ES = kPy, where Es is the streaming potential, P the differential pressure and k and y are constants for any particular mud system at constant temperature. Beyond a certain minimum thickness this relationship is independent of filter cake thickness. Experiment has shown that both k and y are temperature dependent parameters and that in certain mud systems there is a critical value of P above which the simple relationship Es = kPY ceases to hold. The constant k tends to be a function of the mud resistivity at 77ºF, but the exponent y has not been found to be related to any commonly measured mud property. Certain field experiments are described which serve to demonstrate that the total SP (self potential) developed opposite a formation may be quantitatively accounted for as the algebraic sum of an electrochemical potential and an electrokinetic potential. A chart to permit the simple use of mean solution activities in the interpretation of electrochemical SP data is given and its use described. Various field methods for computing the electrokinetic SP component of the total SP are considered and rejected as being unduly complicated and inaccurate. It is shown that the employment of low resistivity drilling muds is essential if optimum accuracy is desired in the use of the S.P. curve for the purpose of computing connate water salinities by the electrochemical SP method. The use of such low resistivity drilling muds is accordingly recommended. INTRODUCTION In a previous paper' a quantitative analysis of the electrochemical compovent of the SP (self potential) curve was made and it was shown that the electrochemical* emf, E, could be expressed as E = ZtRT/F In a,/a,, where t is the transference number of the chloride ion, R is the gas constant, T the absolute temperature of the formation water and mud, a, the mean activity of the connate water (assumed to be sodium chloride) and a, the mean activity of the mud (as sodium chloride). The essential accuracy of this expression was confirmed by an investigation 2 of the SP kicks opposite sands of known water salinity. The logs examined had been routine runs in oil wells in a number of Mid-Continent states. Further confirmation of the original analysis of the electrochemical SP is implicit in the paper by Tixier3 wherein a relationship between the SP and the ratio of connate water and mud resistivities, based only on field data, is given. Allowing for the fact that mud and connate water resistivities were used instead of activities, and that electrokinetic effects were ignored, the constant reported by Tixier is essentially 2tRT/F. The error involved in the universal substitution of resistivities for activities will receive further reference below. Possible reasons for the fact that the electrochemical properties of shales do not appear to be significantly dependent upon either the nature or the quantity of cation exchange materials, such as clays, they contain has been considered at some length by Wyllie and Patnode.4 In the same paper, the probable effects of shale thickness and compaction on electrochemical efficiency, and hence the inherent difficulty of obtaining reliable laboratory-scale data, were also pointed out. As can be seen from the phase diagram A1-W1 the equilibrium solubility of tungsten in aluminum is practically nil at room temperature. By quenching from the liquid state (50,000°C per sec), Varic, Burov, and Kolesnicenko2 obtained A1-W solid solutions up to 0.15 at. pct W. The quenched alloys were in the form of foils, 0.2 to 0.3 mm thick. Considering the results of Duwez and Willens,3 it is obvious that this thickness, which makes impossible a sufficiently rapid quenching, was the main reason for the relatively low content of tungsten dissolved in aluminum found by Varic.2 he present note shows that the metastable solubility of tungsten in aluminum can be appreciably extended in aluminum-rich A1-W alloys. The quenching technique and the procedure employed for the preparation of the alloys have been described previously.475 The resulting quenched flakes varied in thickness from 1 to 20 µm from experiment to experiment. However, the measurements of the lattice parameters were carried out only with flakes thinner than 5 µm. The areas of quenched flakes were between 0.1 and 15 mm2. The quenched flakes were placed into a 0.3-mm glass capillary tube which was then mounted in a 114.6-mm-diam Debye-Scherrer camera. Straumanis asymmetric film position and nickel-filtered CuKa radiation were used. The lattice spacings were computed taking X(CuKa1) = 1.54050A for resolved and ?(CuKa) = 1.54178A for unresolved doublets. All specimens were rotated at room temperature, 26" +2°C. The lattice parameters were estimated from extrapolation against the Nelson-Riley function. It was estimated that the error in the lattice parameter of the measurements on a single film lies within +0.0004A for lower and about +0.001A for higher concentrations of tungsten. The lattice parameters of the metastable solid solutions A1-W are plotted vs the concentration of tungsten in Fig. 1 together with the parameters measured by previous investigators.' Each point of the present measurements represents a determination of the lattice spacing on different quenched flakes, for a given concentration of tungsten. With experimental accuracy, the lattice parameters of the metastable solid solutions fall on the straight line passing through the already known data.' As estimated from the uncertainties in the lattice spacings of the solid solutions, the alloys were homogeneous within 0.1 at. pct W. The solubility of tungsten in aluminum-rich A1-W solid solutions obtained by a very rapid quenching technique is increased to about 0.95 at. pct W. This value is 6 times greater than the amount known up to now. -he lattice parameters of the resultant aluminum solid solutions with higher concentrations of tungsten than 0.95 at. pct W did not remain constant AUGER electron spectroscopy has been used to clarify the role of impurities in the embrittlement of AISI 3340 steel. Analysis of fracture surfaces has shown that the embrittled condition is correlated with appreciable antimony segregation at grain boundaries. The low temperature (400" to 600°C) temper embrittlement of low alloy steels containing various combinations of Cr, Ni, Sb, Mn, P, Sn, and As has been examined extensively for many years. General reviews of the area have been made by McMahon1 in 1968, LOW' in 1959, woodfine3 in 1953, and Holloman4 in 1946. The insufficiencies of our mineral resources are becoming well known, and the national political conscience seems to be troubled at last by our dependence upon mineral commodities which must come from other lands. This realization places increased responsibility upon the industrial, educational, and governmental groups whose task it will be to solve the problems of mineral supply. As we all know, from the time that man first sought mineral deposits until recent years, prospectors have been largely responsible for mineral discoveries. Today the era of the prospector is almost over. The human ants that have literally examined all accessible outcrops and have tested the gravels of nearly all stream beds in the United States have left undiscovered few worthwhile mineral deposits within the scope of their recognition. The pages in the history of mineral exploration are now being turned from the era of the surface prospect to the era of the hidden de- posit.

NONMETALLIC MINERALS, exclusive of fuels, may be divided into three groups: Building materials, fertilizer minerals, and miscellaneous minerals. Building materials, such as sand, gravel, slone, lime, and the ingredients of cement and clay products, occur widely in nature and are thus available near consuming centers at relatively low prices. Cost of transportation over great distances deters any' substantial movement in world trade. On the other hand, fertilizer minerals, such as phosphate rock, potash, nitrates, sulfur, and pyrite, and the miscellaneous nonmetallic minerals, such as long-fiber asbestos, mica, graphite, fluorspar, and china clay, do not have such widespread occurrence and consequently contribute the major part of the world's commerce in such minerals. THE high prices which lead and zinc have commanded during recent months have given a great impetus to search for workable deposits of these metals, and there has accordingly risen a demand for information about deposits which have been worked in the past and which might possibly be opened up anew under these more favorable conditions. Production of zinc and lead in Canada has been on the increase during the last few years. In 1924, 175,- 485,499 lb. of lead with a computed value of $14,221,- 345 were mined. Of this, 96 per cent. was produced in British Columbia, 3 per cent. in Ontario, while Quebec and the Mayo district of the Yukon accounted for the remaining one per cent. During the same year the production of zinc amounted to 98,909,077 lb.. valued at $6,274,791. Of this 96,000,069 lb. were produced in British Columbia and the remaining 2,909,008 in Quebec. The large producer of zinc and also of lead is the Sullivan Mine at Kimberley, B. C. In comparison with the Sullivan, the deposits which are known to occur in eastern Canada are relatively small. Two, however, the Kingdoll lead mine at Galetta, Ontario, and the Tetreault zinc property at Notre Dame des Anges, Quebec, are steady producers. The object of this paper is to describe briefly these and other deposits of eastern Canada, to show their relation to geological events and to point out what are the chances of any of those which are idle at present developing into active producers or what are the possibilities of new deposits being discovered.

THE extreme effect of the depression on the steel industry is well illustrated by the fact that the amount of iron ore shipped from the Lake Superior district was the lowest in 47 years. Something over 3 1/2 million tons of ore was shipped in 1932, compared with over 65 million tons in 1929. It is not surprising then that practically no advancement in iron ore beneficiation has been made. Improved research and development work, however, was continued at the Michigan College of Mines in the survey of the lean iron ores of Michigan with reference to the possibility of their concentration; at the University of Minnesota in its large-scale jigging studies of Lake :Superior ores; and at Battelle Memorial Institute in the development of improved jigging of iron ores. The successful operation of the new Hadsel mill at a gold property in California gave such low grinding costs on a quartz ore as to give much encouragement in the iron ore industry for a cheapening of the cost of grinding lean ores for concentration.

In Mr. Weed's interesting paper, frequent reference is made to the Cananea copper-deposits, which are said to have been so vigorously exploited that they produced 14,000,000 Ib. of copper in 1901. The ore-bodies which yielded this large quantity of metal are described as a product of contact-metamorphism, and in Mr. Weed's genetic classification of such deposits, they receive a place under the sub-heading, "Deposits impregnating and replacing beds of contact-zone."* They are considered by Mr. Weed to represent a special type under this head, and are further classified as: " l. Chalcopyrite deposits: (a) Pyrrhotite ores; (6) Magnetite ores, Cananea type." In condensing much information into a comparatively small space, the presentation of a subject may be so abbreviated as to detract from its clearness. The situation at La Cananea, considering its importance from an economic as well as scientific standpoint, may he worthy of more detailed description. As Mr. Weed rightly remarks, " structural differences are so important, and have SO marked a bearing, not alone on the theory of their genesis, hut also on the working of the deposits and a determination of their value as mines, that they merit a full discussion."† It is my present purpose: (1) to show that it is doubtful whether the copper of La Cananea is mined, except to a limited

However, the measurements of the lattice parameters were carried out only with flakes thinner than 5 µm. The areas of quenched flakes were between 0.1 and 15 mm2. The quenched flakes were placed into a 0.3-mm glass capillary tube which was then mounted in a 114.6-mm-diam Debye-Scherrer camera. Straumanis asymmetric film position and nickel-filtered CuKa radiation were used. The lattice spacings were computed taking X(CuKa1) = 1.54050A for resolved and ?(CuKa) = 1.54178A for unresolved doublets. All specimens were rotated at room temperature, 26o +2°C. The lattice parameters were estimated from extrapolation against the Nelson-Riley function. It was estimated that the error in the lattice parameter of the measurements on a single film lies within +0.0004A for lower and about +0.001A for higher concentrations of tungsten. The lattice parameters of the metastable solid solutions A1-W are plotted vs the concentration of tungsten in Fig. 1 together with the parameters measured by previous investigators.' Each point of the present measurements represents a determination of the lattice spacing on different quenched flakes, for a given concentration of tungsten. With experimental accuracy, the lattice parameters of the metastable solid solutions fall on the straight line passing through the already known data.' As estimated from the uncertainties in the lattice spacings of the solid solutions, the alloys were homogeneous within 0.1 at. pct W. The solubility of tungsten in aluminum-rich A1-W solid solutions obtained by a very rapid quenching technique is increased to about 0.95 at. pct W. The low temperature (400" to 600°C) temper embrittlement of low alloy steels containing various combinations of Cr , Ni , Sb , Mn , P , Sn , and As has been examined extensively for many years. (communication to the Secretary) : Mr. Firmstone's paper is of great interest; but he has unfortunately otnitted to state the most important point, viz., the percentage of sulphur in the two materials he compares; and this omission vitiates the conclusions which he draws. Comparing by grade, instead of silicon-contents (as in his Table III.), the iron made using limestone with that made using dolomite, we find for gray-forge the average of four analyses under limestone to be, Si, 0.644; S, 0.089 ; while one analysis under dolomite gives Si, 0.508 ; S, 0.070. For No. 2 iron, the limestone flux gives, as an average of 19 analyses, Si, 1.107; S, 0.051; while the average of 4 analyses made with dolomite flux gives Si, 0.630; S, 0.056. It will be observed, that no No. 1 pig is given under limestone, while 14 analyses appear under dolomite, averaging Si, 0.950 ; S, 0.028. As nothing is said about changed conditions, it is Fair to presume that the ore and fuel, as well as the blast-temperature (which is stated to have been uniform at about 750' F.) remained practically the same; and since the sulphur in the two fluxes is not given, it is impossible to know whether the lower sulphur for equal silicon-contents is due to the use of dolomite or to other conditions. The use of dolomite would produce a more fusible cinder, and the furnace would be hotter than when using limestone; therefore, we might expect to see a grayer iron. The amount of So. 1 iron made with dolomite seems to confirm this supposition; and, under these conditions, we might expect more of the sulphur to be volatilized, and to pass off in the gases. The easier fusibility of the cinder would also permit more rapid driving; and this should reduce the amount of silicon and sulphur in the iron, as the amount of reduced metalloids in the pig is directly proportional to the length of time it remains in the reducing-zone.

The symposium on mine safety held in connection with the annual meeting of the Institute three years ago, it. was pointed out that "at present no convenient, reliable, accurate means for determining the gas content of mine air is available, for use by the ordinary mine man." In a letter addressed to Coal Age and published on Feb. 25, 1925, Thomas T. Read, then Director of the Safety Service of the Bureau of Mines, stated: "It is to be hoped that sometime in the near future some-one will invent a reliable methane indicator that is con-venient to, use and will permit the keeping of all flames of every character out of bituminous mines, through doing away with the safety lamp." The Martienssen methane detector, which has re-cently received the official approval of the Bureau of Mines, is intended to. meet the demand for such an in-strument as expressed at that meeting and on many other occasions. The characteristics which qualify it for the task are the following: (1) simplicity; (2) small bulk and light weight; (3) ruggedness; (4) accuracy sufficient for the requirements; (5) safety; and (6) dependability. The principle on which the working of the instrument is based may best be explained by giving a brief out-line of the various stages of development through which the inventor, Professor Martienssen of the University of Kiel, Germany, advanced to the final solution of the problem which he had undertaken to solve.

SILICOSIS has been described in a report of the American Public Health Association as a disease due to breathing air containing silica, characterized anatomically by generalized fibrotic changes and the development of miliary nodulations in both lungs, and clinically by shortness of breath, decreased chest expansion, lessened capacity for work, absence of fever, increased susceptibility to tuberculosis (some or all of which symptoms may be present), and by characteristic X-ray findings. ... The disease is divided arbitrarily into first, second, and third stages for convenience of description and possible compensation purposes. At least two distinct types of silicosis are recognized, acute and chronic. The acute form was reported as early as 1713, when a British patent for grinding flint by wet methods was granted because the dry powdered material "proved very destructive to mankind, so much that any person, ever so healthful, working in that business cannot possibly survive over two years."
