M ANY elements can now be obtained in radioactive form. The radioisotopes have the same chemical properties as the corresponding inactive forms, differing from them only by their nuclear instability. This combination of properties permits radioelements to act as atomic tracers, the tracer atoms revealing themselves at the time of their decay with emission of electrons and positrons (beta radiation), helium nuclei (alpha radiation), or electromagnetic radiation (gamma radiation). The tracer technique is particularly attractive for the study of surface chemistry problems in general and flotation problems in particular because of its extreme sensitivity. A large proportion of the ionizing events, initiated by the characteristic decay emissions in a radioactive sample, can be recorded by radiation probes of suitable design and geometry. An idea of this sensitivity can be gathered from the following example: assume that 0.001 mg of pure RaD (radiolead), a beta-ray emitter, is used in a flota¬tion tracer experiment. This is 1210 X 10-1 mole; since the fraction trans¬formed per second (the so-called decay constant), is 9.92 X 10-10, the number of ionizing events per second would be (6.023 X 1023 X y,,, X 10-1) X 9.92 X 10-10 = 2.845 X 106. (The decay constant is expressed in sec-'. Its product with the half life, expressed in seconds, is the pure number, natural logarithm of 2 = 0.693. The half life is the length of time required for decay of one half of the total number of radioactive atoms of one particular type.) (See reference (1) at the end of this article.)

I. INTRODUCTION THE geological field work of the Bully Hill district, upon which this paper is based, was begun July 1, 1908, and covered a period of three months. The time was found too short for a complete report and the district was again visited in the early part of July, 1912,. from which time detailed study of the locality continued until September of the same year. This paper is the result of observations made in the mines in the immediate vicinity of Winthrop, Shasta county, Cal., during these two periods of study. The preparation of this report has been greatly facilitated by various courtesies rendered the writer by D. M. Riordan, President of the Bully Hill Copper Mining & Smelting Co., and by John B. Keating and Herbert R. Hanley, managing officers actively in charge at the mines. The elaboration and further study of the notes and collections were carried on in the laboratories of the Departments of Geology and Mining at Columbia University, and the writer takes pleasure also at this point in expressing his acknowledgments to Profs. James F. Kemp, A. W. Grabau, Charles P. Berkey, and William Campbell, for advice and assistance. In order that one may appreciate at first reading the significance of some of the details which follow, and for the sake of clearness, a brief outline of the geological relationships is here given, together with certain conclusions which have been reached regarding the genesis. of the ores and the gypsum masses. In the Bully Hill mining district an associated series of Triassic lavas and tuffs, chiefly andesites, is preceded as well as followed by sediments. The entire system is tilted so that the original bedding planes dip in general to the southeast. The surrounding region has been greatly disturbed, and in the immediate vicinity of the mines close folding of the later sediments and extreme shearing of the igneous rocks locally is a striking feature. Into the nearly vertical shear zones have been intruded post-Triassic dikes of various rock types in the following order: alaskite-porphyry and andesite-porphyry. Outside the area under consideration diorite dikes are known, but they will not receive attention further than to note that' they, probably, represent a differentiation product of the same magma from which the other two dikes came. In this connection all the dikes have an important bearing on the origin of the ores and of the gypsum found in the mines.

FOR several years, a mine in Colorado experienced considerable trouble from small fires caused by the blasting of coal. Although a well-known make of permissible powder was used, it was first thought that the powder ignited gas that might be present and that this, in turn, set fire to line brattices or to the coal. Experiments were, therefore, conducted with another make of powder, but the results convinced the superintendent of the mine, Robt. Williams, Jr., that the fires were not caused by the powder but by the high-voltage electric current used for detonating the shots. The mine "makes" gas very freely, giving off from three-fourths to a million cubic feet of methane per 24 hours. The coal is a good grade bituminous of a very free burning quality. Electric shot-firing from the outside after all men and animals were outside had been practiced for a number of years. The shooting circuit was connected with the main power circuit at the mouth of each entry. Shooting circuit switches were mounted in boxes, which were kept locked with the handle of the switch, in open position, showing through the bottom of the box. The door of the box could not be shut and locked when the shooting switch was closed. At the entrance to each room, or working place, a small switch, called the miner's switch, was placed on the shooting line. It was the duty of the miner, when entering his place at the beginning of the shift, to see that this switch was open and that it was kept open until he left the place at the end of the shift to go out of the mine. Grounded return was used for main power lines. The current was 500 volts, direct current, with 100 to 300 amp. The nearest working face was 9600 ft. from the shot-firers' switch outside the mine and the most remote working face was 2 ½ miles. The various working faces were scattered over a wide area between these two points.

Problems involved in applying wet scrubbers to gas cleaning coal dust from thermal dryers are reviewed. Careful consideration of all the elements going into a modem coal preparation plant is required in view of the increasing difficulty of applying suitable gas cleaning equipment. This problem arises not only from the presence of finer coals to be handled, but also from the pressures applied by both the general population and the plant operators to improve the standard of gas cleaning performance. The Peabody scrubber is presented by the author as a machine designed to help improve this cleaning operation. Wet scrubbing of fine coal from thermal dryers poses a number of problems in adapting the gas cleaning equipment to the fine particulate matter. Among them are: 1) Dust in gases leaving the thermal dryer cyclones is often extremely fine with high percentages of total dust loading less than 1p in size. 2) Flue gas entering the scrubber is corrosive since the coal fired in the thermal dryer furnace is in the range of 0.7% by weight sulfur or higher. Therefore, comparatively high cost stainless steel alloys or corrosion resistant linings are required for a satisfactory service life. 3) Requirements for residual coal loadings leaving the gas scrubber are continually being lowered, while modern coal preparation operation is imposing heavier burdens on the collection system through introduction into the thermal dryer system of very fine coal previously not recovered. The advent of flotation systems in increasing numbers is typical of this trend. 4) Installation of a scrubbing system on thermal dryers is made primarily to reduce air pollution and product recovery value is of little or no value. Therefore, the operating costs of gas pressure drop and water requirements must be held to a minimum. We have, then, the basic situation which calls for comparatively high cost stainless steel alloy wet scrubbers, which must be highly effective in removing coal fines particularly in the 0 to 5-p size range. Further, the standards of scrubber performance are continually being raised towards the level where gas discharged from the scrubbers must be essentially free of any coloration due to residual dust. In view of the highly refractive nature of fine coal dust, residual loadings of 0.01 grains per cu ft or less are required to provide a color free discharge gas. In the present specifications under consideration a residual coal loading of 0.05 grains per cu ft would be considered color free, since the discharge gases are saturated in the range of 150°F. The steam plume acts as a masking agent at the point of discharge, and upon dissipation of the 150° saturated vapor stream, the effluent gas stream could be essentially color free. The specification under consideration calls for residual solids loading of 0.05 or less grains per cu ft, given a coal size distribution shown in the basic data in Table I. It is noted that the dust laden coal stream has a size distribution by weight of 33% in the 2 to 5-p size range and 55% in the 0 to 2-p size range. DURING the period from 1910 to 1920, there was a lively interest in the subject of grain growth and many papers were published, followed by interesting discussions. Questions dealing with the fundamentals of grain growth-why and how it occurs-were treated in papers by Howe,1 Jeffries,2 Sauveur,3 Chappell,4 Beilby,5 Mathewson and Phillips,6 McAdam,7 Carpenter and Elam,8 Stead and Carpenter,9 Ruder,10 as well as others. Since that decade, much indeed has been done regarding the practical control of grain size, and it is now possible to order material having a size specified in the American Society for Testing Materials classification. Also, one hears the term "spliced boundaries" used in connection with certain tungsten lamp filaments" wherein it is important to prevent "sagging" between consecutive turns of the helix." This practical use of a certain knowledge as to the things that influence or even control grain growth should not be taken as an indication that the subject has been thoroughly explored and that nothing more can be learned from fundamental studies. It is with this thought in mind that a report of some observations and experiments on abnormal grain growth is believed justified. Abnormal grain growth is met with in heat-treating high-carbon steels in the austenitic range,13 in the hardening treatments of high-speed steels, 14.11 and in the low-temperature annealing of strained low-carbon steels as in sheet and wire material. Entirely aside from these instances of exaggerated grain growth, which some might consider as freakish, it is thought that abnormal growth is simply a case where the growth forces and the forces tending to prevent growth are almost, but not quite, evenly balanced. Information relative to grain-growth characteristics in general may be obtained from a study of abnormal growth conditions, which may be looked upon as vantage points. Reflection will show at once that if growth forces are great in comparison to inertia or resistance to growth, many crystals start to grow and, for that reason, none becomes very large, whereas if inertia is predominant no growth at all takes place. A system is described for the simultaneous deposition of epitaxial layers on as many as eight substrates. A high degree of uniformity of both physical and electrical characteristics is achieved in the films. Variation of film thicknesses is consistently less than ±10pct within a wafer and from wafer to wafer within a run with the variation typically on the order of 55 pct. Composition variation of GaAs1-x PX layers within a wafer and from wafer to wafer within a run is consistently less than 51 pct. Electrical evaluation of the films by several techniques indicates excellent doping uniformity within a wafer and from wafer to wafer within a run. Mobilities for lightly doped GaAs films at 300°K are consistently >6000 cm2 v-1 sec-1 and mobilities > 7000 cm2 v- 1 sec-1 are regularly attainable. Techniques for the preparation of material with carrier concentrations from 1 x 1015cm-3 to 1 x 1019 cm-3 n-type and 5 x 1016 to 5 x 1018 cm-3 p-type are discussed. METHODS for the preparation of 111-V compounds by vapor phase reactions have been extensively reported in the literature.1-6 Almost all of the apparatus described for these various methods are suitable for processing one or at the most a very limited number of wafers simultaneously. With the recent rapid advances in the use of vapor grown GaAs for microwave oscillators and GaAs1-xPx as visible light emitters the requirements for these materials are steadily increasing. In order to satisfy these requirements it is necessary to move from a laboratory scale apparatus to one which is capable of processing a large number of wafers simultaneously. Desirable features would be a high degree of uniformity among the wafers and good reproducibility from run to run. The apparatus to be described fulfills these requirements very well. DISCUSSION The various methods reported in the literature can be classified under three headings: 1) closed tube, 2) open tube, and 3) the close-spaced method. Of these three the open-tube method is the most amenable for scale-up to a manufacturing process. It is the most versatile and the various operating conditions can be more precisely controlled than with the other two methods. A number of chemical reactions may be used to achieve vapor-phase growth of 111-V compounds. Sev-era1 of the more generally used reactions are shown in Fig. 1. All of these reactions have the following points in common: 1) generation of a volatile group III(Ga) species by the reaction of the transport agent (halide or HC1) with either Ga or GaAs, 2) introduction of the Group V(As and/or PI component, 3) a method of adding dopant, if desired, and 4) a region in which deposition from the vapor will occur and form as a single crystal epitaxial film on the substrates. The laboratory scale reactors permit the hot re-actant gases to flow into the relatively cooler deposition zone and pass successively over the several substrates which are arrayed along the long axis of the tube parallel to the gas flow. With this arrangement the composition of the reactant stream is continually changing as solid material is deposited on each successive substrate. As a result of this changing gas composition the reaction driving force also changes from substrate to substrate and the degree of uniformity of layer thickness, doping level, and so forth, is poor. This effect can be partially overcome by imposing a controlled temperature gradient along the deposition region to compensate for change in gas composition. However, even when this is done variations in layer thickness on the order of 30 to 40 pct are common and as high as 50 pct are frequently experienced between adjacent wafers in the tube. To expand this arrangement to a large number of wafers would only increase the nonuniformity from the first to last wafer in the line. From the above discussion the two undesirable features of changing gas composition and temperature gradient become evident. A reactor system which eliminates or minimizes these undesirable features is one in which the apparatus is mounted vertically as shown schematically in Fig. 2. The vertical mounting permits the disposition of a number of substrates on a suitable support so that all wafers are at the same vertical height in the furnace and hence at essentially the same temperature. By using only a single row of wafers the reactant gas mixture passes over only one substrate in its path through the reactor. Thus the two undesirable features of changing gas composition and temperature gradient are minimized. An additional design feature which further minimizes temperature variations is rotation of the substrate holder. Rotation serves to integrate any radial temperature gradient existing around the resistance heated furnace. A photograph of a reactor assembly at the completion of a run is shown in Fig. 3. MATERIAL PREPARATION Apparatus. Although any of the several chemical systems shown in Fig. 1 are adaptable for use in this apparatus the one generally used is System 2, the hydride synthesis system. Stress -induced ordering of carbon atoms is studied in a series of Fe-Mn-C alloys. A prominent peak is found in the vicinity of 280°C at frequencies of the order of 1.0 cps, with an associated activation energy of 37 kcal per mole. The height of the peak is linearly rekzted to the concentration of carbon in solution. The distortion of octahedral holes by manganese atoms appears to be predominant over carbon-carbon pair interactions. RELAXATION by stress-induced ordering of point defects is expected whenever the introduction of these point defects produces distortions which have a lower symmetry than that of the lattice. Under zero stress, the isolated point defects occupy the crystallographic-ally equivalent positions in the lattice, as these represent states of equal energy. However, if the defect sites are asymmetric, application of an uniaxial stress will split the energy states, and a redistribution of the defects among various states will take place. This is the case of the internal friction peak called the Snoek peak,1 resulting from isolated interstitials in bcc metals. The interstitial sites in this case have tetragonal symmetry. In the case of fcc and hcp lattices, such an effect is not expected from isolated point defects because of the symmetrical nature of the interstitial sites. However, internal friction peaks arising from interstitial diffusion have been reported both in hcp2,3 and fcc4-8 lattices. These peaks are often explained on the basis of stress-induced ordering of interstitial solutes, caused by the deviation of interstitial sites from their cubic symmetry through the presence of nearby defects. In the case of fcc lattices, evidence for interactions of both the substitutional-interstitial4,6,13 and interstitial-interstitial types5'798'14 have been presented by various investigators. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the internal friction peak attributed to the diffusion of interstitial carbon atoms in high purity austenitic manganese steels and to account for the peak in the light of the existing models. MATERIALS The Fe-Mn-C alloys used in the present investigation were made in two different ways, designated as Type I and Type 11. Type I alloys were made from high purity Fe-Mn alloys obtained in the form of 0.04- in.-diam wires from Materials Research Corporation, Orangeburg, N.Y. These alloys were carburized to different levels using gas mixtures of H2 and CH4 at 1000°C. Type I1 alloys were made in this laboratory starting with zone refined iron, spectrographically pure manganese, and spectrographically pure carbon. They were melted in an argon arc melting furnace and drawn into 0.04-in.-diam wires. All the wires were annealed at about 900°C for 3 hr prior to the internal friction experiments. After the measurements of internal friction, the phases in the samples were identified by X-ray diffraction and the carbon determined by the combustion method. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In the present work, a classical Ke-type pendulum was used. The details of the equipment were described previously by D. T. Peters.9 Dry helium at 40 torr was used in all the experiments. The internal friction, measured as the logarithmic decrement of the torsion amplitude of vibration was determined as a function of temperature, from ambient to about 500°C. The background internal friction was assumed to have the form of the exponential of the inverse temperature and was subtracted from the raw data. The height of the peak was measured at the position of the maximum in the plot of the internal friction versus temperature. The activation energies of the peaks were measured by the peak shift method. The internal friction values for an alloy were obtained as a function of temperature at different frequencies of vibration. The position of the peak changes with frequency, the higher the frequency the higher the peak temperature. The activation energy of the process associated with the peak is obtained using the formula

THIS work was first undertaken in the metallurgical laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1907 by L. A. Dickinson, E. Phelps, and V. S. Rood, under the author's direction. They attempted to determine the diagram for the system Cu2S-NiS, but several inexplicable results were obtained. The following year, P. H. Mayer with Mr. Dickinson carried, on some experiments with nickel sulphide and found that the molten material slowly lost sulphur until it reached a composition corresponding to the compound Ni3S2, established by Bornemann.1 At this point the composition remained stable. The freezing points of the mixtures gradually fell off with the loss of sulphur. Since the above facts seemed to explain the erratic results obtained in the first experiments, Mr. Mayer with F. Jaeger attempted in 1910 to establish a correct equilibrium diagram for the Cu2S-Ni3S2 series. They prepared pure Cu2S and Ni3S2 and determined the cooling curves for various mixtures. The fusions were made in a platinum resistance furnace and the temperatures were measured with a platinum-iridium thermocouple connected with a Sullivan galvanometer. The curve was established for mixtures containing more than 40 per cent. Cu2S, but they were unable to determine certainly the direction of the curve beyond that point. Nothing further was attempted with this series until the present year, when the work was carried to a successful conclusion with the assistance of A. Butts, Jr., and E. H. Weil. The results of this work are given in the following pages.

YEARS of experience and research have shown that molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium are among the most useful and effective elements in augmenting the high-temperature strength of heat-treatable, ferritic steels. Grün, for example, in conducting an early survey of the strengthening effects of various elements in annealed, low-carbon steel at 750° and 930°F (400° and 500°C), found molybdenum and vanadium to be the most effective.' Holtmann comprehensively studied the strengthening effects of molybdenum and vanadium in quenched and tempered steels at 930°F as a function of microstructure and carbon content.' He found creep strength to be related to the saturation of the austenite at the austenitizing temperature, such that strength is increased by alloying until the y loop is reached—the terminus of complete austenitization. Beyond this degree of alloying, the inability to heat treat will result in lower strength, at least for low and moderate creep temperatures. Tungsten, owing to higher cost than molybdenum, has been little used in ferritic high-temperature steels. As a result, very few investigations have been made of its high-temperature strengthening ability, and reliable data on its effectiveness are not available. Grün rated tungsten far less effective than molybdenum at 930°F (500°C) on a weight-percentage basis.' However, Tammann has found that tungsten is as effective as molybdenum in raising the recrystallization temperature of iron. For this reason Smith, in a review of the subject, has advocated a re-examination of the influence of tungsten on the high-temperature strength of steel.' In any study of the effects of alloying additions on high-temperature properties, recognition must be made of the many variables involved, some of which can be controlled but have been ignored in innumerable investigations of the past, and some of which are difficult or even impossible to control. One cannot, for example, assign a definite strengthening index to any one alloying element, for this will be dependent upon the microstructure (heat treatment and mechanical treatment), testing con- ditions (temperature, time, and stress), and the complete composition of the steel (accompanying alloying elements, impurities, etc.). One ever-appear ing variable, hardness or tensile strength at room temperature, may be eliminated by heat treating all of the alloys to a single hardness level. An attempt may be made to control the variable of primary quenched structure by oil or water quenching the test specimen. The control of such variables may not be possible in cases of widely varying compositions, but at least such deviations should be recognized. Material and Procedure The alloys, made as 30-lb ingots in an induction furnace, all had the same base composition of about 0.18 pct C, 0.85 pct Mn, and 0.48 pct Si. They were grouped as follows: Mo Group—Containing up to 5.2 pct Mo. W Group-Containing up to 6.0 pct W. V Group—Containing up to 3.3 pct V. Mo-V Group—Containing up to 2.7 pct Mo and up to 1.4 pct V. Mo-W Group—Containing up to 2.5 pct Mo and up to 2.5 pct W. The steels, listed in Table I, were forged to ¾ in. sq bars and the material for the high-temperature, rupture-test specimens was further swaged to %-in. round bars.

PARTICULAR interest in the ventilation of deep mines, especially those in South Africa, has been created by a very complete system of cooling of the world's deepest mine, the Turf shaft of the Robinson Deep in Johannesburg. The writer visited this mine in January, 1936, and again in 1937. During these visits and subsequently, a considerable part of the theory involved in rock cooling in tunnels was developed and this has been checked by practical observations of the rates of rock cooling made within mines. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the method of attack of the mine problem. The cooling or air conditioning of mines by the use of mechanical refrigeration was not wholly new 1-5 when the Robinson Deep installation was made. The first mine to be cooled was the Morro Velho mine, in Brazil. The first installation in this mine was put into operation in December 1920, the refrigerant being ammonia.5 The surface cooling gave considerable benefit but it proved inadequate as greater depths were reached, therefore in 1929 two centrifugal refrigerating machines were installed at the 6000-ft. level. These were used in conjunction with the surface cooling system to furnish additional cooling at the lower levels. This later installation used Carrene as a refrigerant. This nonflammable refrigerant, having a boiling point of 104º at sea level, insured reasonable safety, since all parts of the machine operated at subatmospheric pressure. Very favorable reports have been received on the effectiveness of this installation, but no recent data are available. An interesting feature of that plant is that the condenser water is cooled by spraying it into the exhaust air from the mine at the base of the ventilation upcast, which permits the water to be cooled within a few degrees of the wet-bulb temperature of the air entering the upcast, and the only water that has to be supplied for condensing purposes is that lost by evaporation, or about 0.5 per cent of the volume circulating through the condenser. This plan affords an ideal means for the removal of the heat load from the refrigerating system, and of course also from the mine itself. As a first step in a study of the physical chemistry of copper-smelting slags, experimental measurements were made of the oxygen pressure of simple iron-silicate slags in equilibrium with solid iron. The experiments consisted in bubbling CO2-CO mixtures through the slags in iron crucibles and in finding the equilibrium ratios of CO2 to CO. From the data, activities and partial molal heats of solution FeO and SiO2 in the slags were calculated. THE ternary system FeO-Fe,O,-SiO, is the simplest system which can represent adequately the important chemical properties of the slags formed in matte smelting and converting. Accordingly, the experimental study of slags in this system was started as the first step in a general research program on the thermodynamics of copper smelting. A recent paper by one of the authors' outlines this general research program and shows in some detail how information on thermodynamic properties of iron-silicate slags, especially information on oxygen activities, is essential to a full understanding of the chemistry of copper smelting. The FeO-Fe,O,-SiO, system also is the basis of slags produced in other processes, such as acid steelmak-ing processes, and is important in relation to the behavior of silicious refractories. In addition, data on the physicochemical properties of iron-silicate slags should contribute to a general understanding of the nature of slags, since at present such data for all kinds of slags are relatively meager. The principal quantitative information already available on iron-silicate slags consists in Bowen and Schairer's constitution diagram for slags in equilibrium with metallic iron,' Darken and Gurry's complete and precise thermodynamic study of the Fe-0 system,",' and Darken's study of the phase equilibria in the Fe-Si-o system. From the results of this previous work, it was clear that a complete thermodynamic study of ternary iron-silicate melts was a major undertaking which would have to be broken down into parts, including the working out of the ternary equilibrium diagram as well as extensive activity measurements on slags. The experimental measurement of oxygen activity, using CO-CO, and other gas mixtures as yardsticks of oxygen activity, was the basis of Darken and Gurry's study of the Fe-0 system. From the experimental measurements of oxygen activities over a large range of temperatures and compositions, they were able to calculate the activities of other species such as Fe, FeO, Fe,O,, etc., and also the other important thermodynamic properties in the Fe-0 system. At the start of the present investigation, it appeared that the same approach would be fruitful for the study of iron-silicate melts. Also, the experimental measurement of oxygen activities seemed particularly attractive because oxygen activity itself is a quantitative measure of oxidizing or reducing power, which is an important variable in copper-smelting slags. The slag compositions in equilibrium with yFe appeared most suitable for the first investigation of this kind, for the following reasons: 1—Good constitution data2 were available. 2—An iron crucible could be used, thus affording a simple solution to the refractory problem without introducing contarnination. 3—With Fe activity fixed, at unity with respect to a standard state of solid Fe, measurements of 0 activity could be followed by simple calculations of activities of FeO and other Fe-0 complexes and of SiO,. 4—This starting point afforded several possibilities for cross-checking with previous work,

On the basis of the metallographic observations, it can be deduced that the segregation observed is representative of the solute segregation produced during crystal growth. Fe-C alloys have been investigated at temperatures below the eutectoid transformation to determine whether the superplasticity phenomenon exists for these materials. As a result of void formation at the carbide-ferrite interfaces that led to void coalescence and premature failure, the large elongations characteristic of superplustic matem'als did not develop. It had generally been assumed that the conditions for obtaining superplasticity include: a) T/Tm =0.5, b) a strain rate sensitivity of the flow stress that results in m s 0.3, and c) fine-grain structure. Although superphsticity was not observed in the alloys studied, stress-strain rate measurements indicated that an additional condition for the existence of superplasticitv in Fe-C allovs is that the fine-wain structure be equiaxed in agveement with previous results on Zn-Al al1oys. MANY investigations have been made on the hot deformation of iron-base alloys in order to obtain an understanding of the variables that may affect high-temperature strength and ductility.'-6 However, only a few papers have studied the effect of carbon content on the high-temperature properties of iron-base alloys. Peretayat'ko and Zaikov and Wallquist and carlen4 studied the effect of carbon on strength in the y temperature range, and recently Robbins, Shepard, and sherby6 studied the influence of carbon on the torsional behavior of iron in the a and cu-plus-cemen-tite temperature ranges. In addition to studying hot deformation behavior, current investigations have also been concerned with the phenomenon of superplasticity in nonferrous materials, and, in particular, ferrous alloys. Superplasticity is identified by the increased resistance to necking that results from a high strain rate sensitivity of the flow tress. ackofenr proposed the strain rate hardening coefficient m = d log a/d log e as a measure of strain rate sensitivity and showed that m must be "-0.3 for superplasticity to exist. In addition, a fine-grained microstrcture,- a eutectic or eutectoid ornosition,- and a test temperature in the creep range (TITm > 0.5)" have also been advanced as necessary conditions for superplasticity. Although many workers""23 investigated superplasticity associated with the allotropic transformation in iron and the eutectoid transformation in steel, and recently chadler " and orrison have studied superplasticity in the a - y phase region, no one has measured the superplastic effect in the a + cementite temperature region. Therefore, the purpose of this investiga- tion was to determine the effect of carbon content, microstructure, and test temperature on the strain rate sensitivity of Fe-C alloys at temperatures below the eulectoid transformation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Fe-C alloys with carbon contents of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0 wt pct were prepared as 100 lb 54 in. ingots by vacuum-induction melting. The compositions are listed in Table I. All the ingots were soaked at 2100°F for 2 hr prior to rolling to 4 in. plate. The minimum finishing temperature for rolling was 1800°F. The plate was sheared in 10-in. lengths and tensile bars were rough-machined prior to heat treatment. The samples were heat-treated according to the schedule in Table I1 in order to obtain a fine-grained microstructure consisting of finely dispersed carbides in a matrix of small ferrite grains. All the tensile specimens were heat-treated prior to finish machining, and tensile testing was accomplished on an Instron machine in conjunction with a clamshell furnace. The buttonhead specimen configuration is shown in Fig. 1. An inert atmosphere, helium, was maintained during testing with a steel tube shroud in a bell jar arrangement. Predried helium was continually purged over the buttonhead specimens and exhausted through ceramic fiber at the bottom of the tube to keep oxidation at a minimum and to prevent

Metallurgical processes cannot be conducted successfully With out the aid of analytical chemistry. The great perfection of Iead smelting in the West, for instance, has only been accomplished by the analysis of ores, fluxes, slags and all products of the furnace. Ores are mixed and fluxed to obtain a slag of desired composition. Account is even taken of the composition of the ashes obtained from the coke. The " muscular " smelter has left the field forever! This state of affairs has been induced by sharp competition, i.e., by a com plete separation of the industries of mining and reducing ores, not by the liberality and wisdom of directors and stockholders to pro vide laboratories and engage chemists, or by their love for scientific investigation. It would be considered absurd, at present, to run a lead-smelter, a blast-furnace for pig-iron, or a Bessemer plant without the assist ance of a well-equipped laboratory and a chemist; but it is con sidered quite sufficient to provide amalgamation- or lixiviation works merely with a crude assay-office, and an assayer who is paid less than a laborer in the mill. In my opinion, this will change in the near future. By the ex clusion of Mexican lead-ores, and their growiring scarcity in the West, smelters have been forced to raise their charges on so-called dry silver-ores, and cannot handle the latter now in such unlimited quantities as formerly. The inevitable result must be that the sur plus of these dry silver-ores, especially those of low grade, will be reduced by processes cheaper than smelbing; and here the introduc tion of lixiviation has an excellent field, provided the muscular lixiviator has an able chemist for an assistant. It is to be regretted that so little analytical work has been done in lixiviation. We know almost nothing of the composition of roasted ores before and after lixiviation; of the constitution of the first wash water and of lixiviation-solutions after prolonged use; of the chemistry of sodium and calcium sulphides; of the col-hposition

By means of mathematical solutions to the appropriate diffusion equations, we describe the kinetics of the thermal diffusion of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 for the various temperatures and concentrations encountered in a heavy water moderated reactor. When the hydrogen concentration is below terminal solid solubility only the a Phase is present. Redistributions are then described in terms of the characteristic functions of the difhsion equation. For higher concentrations both the a and 6 phases are present. We assume the two phases to be always in equilibrium. For moderately small hydrogen concentrations exact solutions of the two-phase equation approach the the approximate solutions derived by Sawatzky and for all concentrations the exact solutions exhibit the qualitative features of his result: the two-phase concentration increases with time, everywhere; in the absence of a hydrogen current at the hot end of the sample an a-phase region always exists there; the interface of the a + 6 , a-phase boundary moves toward the cold md of the sample and the hydrogen concentration is discontinuous at the interface. Simultaneous solulions of the a and a + 6 hydrogen distributims and of the concomitant interface motion are obtained and compared to the observations of Sawatzky and Markowitz. The kinetics of the hydrogen diffusion process are shown to lead to m apparent heat of transport of the a phase which is lower than the actual value (even for samples with long anneals) thus resolving at least partially the disparity between experimental measurements of this quantity. A number of recent papers1"4 have reported measurements on the diffusion and redistribution of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 under temperature and concentration gradients. These studies were instigated by problems arising from increasing use of Zircaloy-2 as a fuel element cladding material in pressurized-water power-reactors. The Zircaloy-2 picks up hydrogen during the operation of the reactor: the consequent precipitation of zirconium hydride in the Zircaloy-2 has pronounced effects on its mechanical properties. The Purpose of the present Paper is to describe the kinetics of the thermal diffusion of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 for the various hydrogen concentrations and temperatures likely to be encountered in reactors. When the hydrogen in the Zircaloy-2 is entirely in the solid solution phase (a phase), the differential equation for thermal diffusion is well known and the redistribution can be described by standard mathematical methods some of which are given in Section 11 below. The treatment of the a + 6 (hydride) region differs from the earlier treatment of sawatzky3 by taking into account several modifications of the two-phase diffusion equations as suggested to us by Markowitz4 and Kidson.5 Even with the modifications the results obtained in our more complete treatment are substantially the same as those found by Sawatzky. As we show, the difference between the results of sawatzky3 and kIarkowitz4 is largely due to the difference in the geometry of their experiments. In the next section we derive the modified two-phase equation for arbitrary geometry. The exact solution of this equation is given in Section III for linear and cylindrical geometry. It is shown that Sawatzky's approximate solution is quite accurate for almost all the temperatures and hydrogen concentrations which are actually encountered. In Sawatzky's approximate theory the hydrogen concentration everywhere in the two-phase region increases continuously. As his paper pointed out, this result, together with hydrogen conservation, implies that in a sample with no hydrogen current flowing into the hot end a two-phase region is always accompanied by a single-phase region at the hot end of the sample. The net hydrogen gain in the two-phase region is supplied by the decrease of hydrogen in the single-phase region and by the movement of the (a, a + 6) boundary toward the cold end of the sample. Hydrogen conservation at the (a, a + 6) boundary leads to a discontinuity in the concentration and its derivative there. In Section IV it is shown how these qualitative features of the thermal diffusion kinetics arise from the simultaneous solution of the a-phase differential equation and a + 6 phase equation. Methods derived by us previously for the solution of the redistribution in both phases and the accompanying motion of the boundary are used to obtain approximate solutions valid for large times. The solutions account well for the observed redistributions of Sawatzky and Markowitz. It is shown how the continuing motion of the (a, a + 6) boundary leads to measured values of the heat of transport lower than the actual value, even for specimens with relatively long anneals.

Introduction In the mining industry, comminution typically begins in the mine with a blast of explosive to break rock so that it can be handled by the avail- able equipment. Though the breaking of the rock is essential for material handling in the mine and plant, this is not the only reason for ore reduction in the mineral industry. Comminution is primarily required to liberate minerals from ore so that they can be concentrated into valuable products or to prepare minerals, such as talc, for market as mined. The size of the equipment used for comminution ranges from small to massive. Regardless of equipment size, the power required to reduce the rock is a major expense. Years ago, mineral deposits could be mined more selectively and required less grinding to produce saleable products. However, as richer deposits were depleted, it has become necessary to mine low-grade deposits, with the valuables dispersed throughout the rock. Comminution equipment evolved in physical size and capacities to meet the new mine and process requirements. A modern, modestly sized mining operation, with a capacity of 25.000 TPD may use crushers two stories high weighing over a million pounds, SAG mills 36 feet in diameter driven by dual motors putting out 10.000 horse- power, and ball mills over 16 feet in diameter . Because of the increasing size and weight of modern equipment, the builder is faced with the problems of erecting massive foundations and field assembling equipment on these foundations. As equipment costs and plant construction costs increase, builders are finding that owners are asking for more detailed progress and cost data. Comminution construction projects are generally classified as grass roots plants or expansions or modifications to existing plants. It is estimated that 60-702 of the jobs involve existing plants. Today ' s costs for construction of small, new comminution plants can reach tens of millions of dollars; larger plants can cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Modifications, on the other hand, usually run from a few thousand to several million dollars. Though many problems are common to the construction of both new plants

FOR many years the Homestake Mining Co. has devoted serious attention to the elimination of accidents, and ground is steadily being gained in this direction. In accident prevention work it is line-plunging with perfect teamwork and not the spectacular forward pass that brings progress toward the goal. In both surface plants and under- ground workings we regard "good housekeeping" as a first requisite for safety as well as efficiency. Under this term are included all types of safety guards and protective devices as well as cleanliness and orderliness it working places. Perhaps the most important factor in safety work is to arouse and maintain employee interest. The general morale and contentment of employees is of particular importance.

Abstract-The sharp drop in world phosphate demand that took place in 1975, due to temporarily high prices, now seems to be reversing itself. And prices for both phosphate rock and phosphate fertilizers, which declined dramatically from their 1975 highs, now appear to be bottoming out. This recent price weakness has delayed new mining ventures that had previously been planned for completion by around 1980. While there is ample capacity to supply near-term rock needs, the stage seems to be emerging for a better supply-demand and price environment in the late 1970's and early 1980's.
