This paper covers the theory and present state of development of an apparatus for the nonmathematical analysis of complex problems of reservoir and well behavior. At the present stage of development of this apparatus, it is capable of solving the water-drive problem of any reservoir performance for which a mathematical solution has been presented in the literature, either on the basis of steady or unsteady-state flow analysis. The theory is presented for the extension of the scope of this analyzer along the lines of the present development. The resulting apparatus should be able to solve reservoir-performance problems previously thought too difficult for practical solution by mathematical means. As an illustration of its operation and present scope, the analysis of a reservoir problem and synthesis of expected performance is presented. Introduction In this method† of analyzing problems of petroleum-reservoir and well behavior, the porous continuum of the reservoir is assumed to be divided into small blocks, or units. Each block is assumed to be small enough so that for a material balance on the fluids in the block an average pressure for the block can be used. In analyzing reservoir behavior from this point of view by mathematical means, a set of simultaneous difference equations would be obtained (two for each block), which must be solved or combined into a partial differential equation. In the method to be described here, instead of solving these sets of equations analytically, electrical units are constructed, which will behave in respect to the flow of electricity exactly as the reservoir units behave under various conditions of fluid flow. The electrical units are then wired together in the same way that the reservoir units are connected naturally by virtue of their geometrical locations and shapes. Fluid-Flow Equations Consider a block in a reservoir. Assume that reservoir fluid (or fluids) is flowing in at one face and out at the opposite face, and that the block is small enough so that at all points the stream lines are within one degree of perpendicular to the face. Furthermore, assume that the pressure, pi, at the upstream face (Fig, I) is not more than one per cent greater than P2 the pressure at the downstream face. A material balance will show that the mass of fluid flowing out less the mass of fluid flowing in will equal the change in density times the fluid volume. This is expressed in the equation:

(New Haven Meeting, February, 1909.) THE Hammond Mining and Metallurgical Laboratory is the gift of Prof. John Hays Hammond to the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University. Professor Hammond was graduated from this school in the class of 1876, and has always shown great interest in its welfare and progress. In 1903, he offered to build and equip for it a mining and metallurgical laboratory. This offer was gratefully accepted by the trustees; and in October of the same year the architect, W. Gedney Beatty, and the writer were employed to draw up plans for the building, which is the largest of its kind in this country. The Treasurer's report shows the total gift of Professor Hammond, including land, building, and equipment, to have been $128,741.53. This does not include $5,000 given by Professor Hammond to defray incidental expenses. ECONOMIC STRUCTURE OF MODERN INDUSTRIAL ECONOMIES The role of minerals in modern industrial economies may be examined in several ways. There are relationships with the various sectors of the economy: the primary, secondary, and tertiary industrial groupings and activities. Mineral supply and demand activities can be measured in terms of national accounts criteria. The economic policy objectives of the modem industrial economy are based to a considerable extent on the needs of the nation for economic supplies of miner- al materials. There is an important role for minerals relative to national security in peace and in wartime and many national policies are directed toward ensuring adequate sup- plies of minerals. Environmental control in the modem industrial economy is increasingly concerned with matters related directly to the production and use of minerals and these matters, in turn, bear importantly on conservation in mineral supply and demand. Mineral polices include specific provision for research and development activities concerned with the production and the use of minerals. In all, national policy objectives will be shaped in considerable part by the circum- stances of mineral supply and demand: the relative degree of availability from domestic and foreign sources, the state of the mineral-processing industries, and the degree of development of the mineral-using industries, and per capita and total changes in requirements. Goods made from mineral raw materials are the basis of all advanced societies and although this is taken for granted, every country is continually dealing with problems of mineral supply and demand. Considering that in the first 50 years of this century the consumption of mineral materials in a highly Industrialized country such as the United States increased by six times while the population was doubling, it becomes apparent that if a country is to enjoy rapid economic growth it must have access to huge and ever-growing supplies of mineral materials at lowest possible cost. Adequate supplies of mineral materials and wise usage of mineral resources have always been among the most important determents of a nation's survival The importance of access to adequate mineral supplies is increasing every year and this has significant international, as well as national, implications because of the unique locational characteristics of mineral resources. It is generally acknowledged that no particular type of natural resource is essential to a high level of national income or to economic progress. A country's endowment of natural resources need not exercise a determining influence on the course of its national income over time, provided it is able to trade. BACK in the early nineties the old Dickerson iron mine in Morris county, N. J., was operated by a vertical shaft 850 ft. deep and by a continuing slope for more than 1000 ft. more 011 an incline of 65", together making the vertical depth about 1800 ft. I was then the general superintendent there. This mine, named for a former governor of New Jersey, had been worked more or less continuously from long before the American Revolution and up to this particular time. The pumping equipment was of the old-time Cornish type, with its long pump-rods running down the vertical shaft and the slope to the sump at its bottom. It was operated by a large flywheel engine in the engine room and all angles were turned by the usual bobs. Saturday was the day fixed for lowering the "suction" into the deepened sump at the bottom of the advancing slope. The mine foreman had gone down with the morning shift to superintend this very vital and particular work, which consisted not only of lowering the "suction" into the sump immediately after the pump had been stopped, but of securing it to the rock and putting in the added sections of column-pipe and of tightening up the numerous bolts at their joints, all before the water rose to the point of working. At an appointed time during the forenoon I had agreed to go down into the mine and join the mine foreman in consultation over any difficulties that might have arisen. At the time agreed I went down by the cage to the bottom of the vertical 850-ft. shaft, and then by ladders down the slope for over 1000 ft. more.

DURING the war, the Navy undertook the construction, under my direction, of an experimental gun embodying features designed to lessen the cost and time of production. These experiments were initiated after representations as to their, desirability had been offered by myself, by the Naval Consulting Board, and by the National Research Council. The first drawings were made in June, 1917, and the experiment was completed in November, 1918. For the sake of clearness it will pay to recapitulate briefly the fundamental idea of gun construction. It is well known that if a hollow cylinder is subjected to internal fluid pressure, the maximum stress occurs in the inside layers, the outer parts carrying much less than their due share of the stress. This inequality of stress is more pronounced the thicker the walls of the cylinder. If such a cylinder is pushed to the elastic limit, failure in elasticity will take place long before the outer layers have reached the limit of their capacity. Economical use of the material would demand, however, that all parts of the cylinder reach the limits of their capacity simultaneously. This may be brought about, at least in cylinders of not too great thickness, by producing in. the inner layers an initial compression, and in the outer layers an initial tension. The effect of internal pressure is at, first to relieve the compression of the inside layers, while increasing the tension of the outside layers. If the initial stresses are properly distributed, all parts of the cylinder will reach their elastic limits simultaneously, thus giving a cylinder of maximum strength for its weight. In gun construction as hitherto practiced, this initial distribution of stress is produced either by winding the inner tube with wire, a common English practice, or by shrinking hoops over the inner tube, which has been the standard American practice. Nitrogen, and its compounds, unique among the materials described in this volume, is absolutely essential to the existence of the human race. Almost all minerals are important and the absence of any one of them would be sorely felt; but nitrogen is an integral part of the cycle of life itself. Man cannot live without nitrogen which, as an inert gas, composes the major part of the air he breathes; as compounds, nourishes the vegetation which he eats; and, as protein, forms a part of his very flesh and blood. Nature originally provided man with a vast reserve of usable nitrogen compounds in the form of fertile soil. She constantly replenishes the supply by "fixing" nitrogen in the air at the estimated rate of 400,000,000 tons per year (an insignificant 6 lb per acre) during electrical storms. She has also placed certain microorganisms in the soil which are able to "fix" nitrogen and convert it into forms which plants can use. Legumes like cow peas, soy beans, clover, and alfalfa have extraordinary roots which serve as stimulating hosts to these bacteria which, in turn, nourish the plant. By plowing in all or part of such crops, their above-average nitrogen content can be returned to the soil for other more useful crops. The mechanism for this recycle is supplied by "denitrifying" bacteria which attack the dead plant tissue and liberate nitrogen and ammonia. However, since one crop of grain, sugar beets, potatoes, tomatoes, etc., takes out a major portion of the nitrogen which a plowed-in legume crop can supply, this method of fertilization is obviously inadequate. Drastic intervention by man has become necessary to support the ever-growing population of the world.9,15,20 Old civilizations with a high population density, such as the Chinese, were able to exist for centuries by carefully tilling the soil, rotating crops, and returning to the soil all the nitrogen in vegetable wastes plus human and animal excreta. But the lack of a means for augmenting their supply of nitrogen placed a ceiling on further development and kept the mass of the population in a chronic state of undernourishment, frequently punctuated by famine. Nitrogen plays another important role in the life of mankind. In the form of explosives, nitrogen helps to wrest from the earth many materials needed for our material well-being. Also, in the form of explosives and propellants, nitrogen increased the destructiveness of wars to a point only exceeded by the fantastic power of atomic energy. Man's first really effective efforts to improve his position with respect to nitrogen began in the 18th Century with the mining of sodium nitrate. By the late 1880's this had become a big industry serving a large part of the world. In the late 1890's nitrogen, in the form of ammonia, was being recovered from coke-oven operations. In 1900 nitrogen, in the form of nitric oxide, was being obtained from the air by an electric-arc process. About 1904 another "fixation" process based on the reaction of nitrogen with calcium carbide to form cyanamide was commercialized. By 1913 the Haber-Bosch process of "fixing" atmospheric nitrogen by reacting it with hydrogen to produce synthetic ammonia was successfully applied on a large scale, first in Germany and then throughout the industrial areas of the world.9 All the above methods of obtaining nitrogen compounds are still in use and, between them, they assure mankind of adequate supplies for all time. While this fortunate situation is not unique amongst industrial raw materials, all too few of man's needs are so well in hand.

THE properties and casting characteristics of sand-cast Mg-Al-Zn alloys, used commercially in this country and abroad, have been discussed in a number of articles during the past few years.'-" In addition, broad surveys of many compositions in the magnesium corner of the Mg-Al-Zn diagram between 0 and 12 pct A1 and 0 and 6 pct Zn have been presented by Busk and Marande7 and by Fox." The purpose of this paper is to furnish a comprehensive survey of the changes in tensile properties, micro-structure, and dimensional stability of two magnesium alloys, AZ92A and AZ63A,+ as a function of aging time and temperature after solution heat treatment. Rates of precipitation in Mg-Al-Zn alloys are slow enough so that a substantially homogeneous, supersaturated solid solution can be maintained even when these alloys are air-cooled from the heat-treating temperature. Consequently, even though it has been demonstrated9 10 that significantly higher strengths can be developed in some alloys in the aged condition by quenching rather than air cooling from the heat-treating temperature, general practice is to air-cool magnesium alloys. All the work discussed in this paper is based, therefore, on aging studies performed on material air-cooled from the heat-treating temperature. This investigation was intended to be a study of commercially practical aging cycles; the tensile properties were determined, therefore, up to aging times of 25-hr duration. The alloys, used in this investigation were prepared in the laboratory by remelting commercial ingots of the appropriate composition according to the procedures described in a previous paper" as the "crucible method." All melts were given the standard superheating treatment in order to insure the maintenance of a uniform grain size of 0.003 to 0.004 in. Standard test bars, 61/2 in. long with a 2½ in. long reduced section having a diameter of Y2 in., were cast from these melts in green-sand molds using a four-bar pattern. The alloys were heat treated according to the following schedules: AZ92A alloy: 500" to 780°F in 2 hr + 780°F (24 hr) AZ63Aalloy: 500" to740°Fin2 hr + 740°F (16hr) In commercial practice," AZ92A alloy is heat treated at 770°F for 18 hr and AZ63A alloy is heat treated at 730°F for 10 hr. The work reported in this paper represents the first of a series of investigations of the factors governing notch toughness in ferritic materials. This paper is concerned with two of these factors, namely, the effect of ferrite grain size, and the effect of an alloy content of 3.64 pct nickel. Every effort has been made to hold other variables constant in order to isolate the effects of these two. The compositions chosen for study were 0.02 pct carbon in order to eliminate the variable of carbide distribution, one steel being a plain carbon steel and the other alloyed with 3.64 pct nickel. Both steels were fully killed with silicon, without an aluminum addition, so that the variable of deoxidation practice was held constant. Finally, all samples were water quenched from 1200°F and tempered 24 hr at 300°F in order to hold the quench aging variable constant and to decrease the tendency for grain boundary carbide precipitation. The ferrite grain size was varied by heat treatment over the range of A.S.T.M. grain size numbers of about 2 to 6 in each steel so that the effect could be evaluated individually and the notch toughness of each steel could be compared at comparable ferrite grain sizes. Materials and Experimental Procedure MATERIALS The materials for this investigation were obtained from Battelle Memorial Institute as 250 Ib induction melts which were forged into 134 in. square bars and then rolled into 0.6 in. square bars. Both steels were deoxidized with silicon, the aluminum content being held to a minimum. Check analyses of these materials are shown in Table 1. HEAT TREATMENT FOR GRAIN SIZE The grain size was varied by varying both the cooling rate and the austeni- tizing temperatures. The heat treatments used and the corresponding grain size values are tabulated in Table 2. A semicontinuous network of grain boundary carbide was observed in the microstructure of both the plain carbon and nickel steels in the as rolled condition and an additional heat treatment was necessary to eliminate this variable. Therefore, all samples were water quenched from 1200°F and tempered 24 hr at 300°F as a final treatment before testing. This heat treatment served to eliminate to a great extent the grain boundary carbide network and to hold the quench aging effect constant. IMPACT TESTING Standard keyhole Charpy impact tests were machmed after heat treatment. A bath of acetone and dry ice was used for refrigeration of the samples down to temperatures of —94°F (—70°C) and a bath of either methyl-cyclohexane or isopentane, cooled by

Previously the authors showed that the Gilvarry equation correctly describes the distribution of fragment size in single fracture, provided the exoclastic particles showing original surface of the specimen are removed from the distribution. In the present work this conclusion has been strengthened in two respects. First, it has been shown that the existence of two peaks in the differential distribution for the endoclastic particles, corresponding to the effect of surface and volume flaws in the interior of the specimen, can be demonstrated from the average of data for a large number of specimens. Second, it has been shown by means of a Coulter counter that data obtained from specimens fractured in gelatin display the behavior at fragment sizes approaching 1 p which is demanded by the limiting form of the Gilvarry equation in this case. In previous work, a rigorous derivation of the proper distribution function for fragment size in single fracture of a brittle solid has been given by Gilvarry,' based on a closely defined physical model and deduced strictly by the laws of probability. Experimental work has been reported by Gilvarry and Berg-str~m,~ confirming the theory in its broad outlines. Subsequently, Gilvarry and Bergstrom extended the theoretical discussion to include comminution and presented experimental data bearing on this point. They have described further experimental results for the case of single fracture recently. The experimental evidence regarding single fracture was rather convincing. However, it was based on only five specimens for which fragment sizes were determined by sieve analyses and three for which measurements in the finer sizes were made on a Coulter counter. The purpose of the present paper is to extend the experimental results as obtained by means of both sieve analyses and the Coulter technique. In the former case, sufficient specimens are included so that the average data should vield ac- curately the detailed behavior of the distribution function for the coarser fragment sizes. In the latter case, measurements for the finer sizes are reported which correspond to single fracture more closely than prior results and fill a lacuna left in the experimental verification. In addition, an extension of the theory given recently bGilvarry for the case of fracture of a two-dimensional solid will be outlined, and experimental results obtained by him will be discussed.6 THREE-DIMENSIONAL CASE Gilvarry' has shown that the Schuhmann size modulus is a measure, in a sense specified later, of the number of activated edge flaws in a specimen undergoing single fracture. Single fracture is defined as that resulting from a single instantaneous application of energy, such as the blow of a hammer whose motion is halted when fracture begins. Plural fracture consists of a short sequence of single fractures, as in a jaw or gyratory crusher; multiple fracture obtains when many applications of energy are made, as in a ball mill. The Griffith flaws associated with fracture of a specimen are flaws occurring within the volume of the body, on the new surfaces created within its interior and on the new edges (intersections of two surfaces) within the body. Fracture proceeds by activation of flaws in the volume of the specimen, in the fracture surfaces throughout its interior, and in the edges produced by intersection of fracture surfaces. If all the flaws and all groups of flaws are distributed at random, independently of other flaws or groups thereof, it has been shown by Gilvarry that the distribution function for fragment size has the form of a Poisson distribution. The fraction y, by weight or volume, passing a sieve of mesh size x is given by where k is an average spacing of activated edge flaws, j2 is an average amount of surface containing one activated surface flaw and i3 is an average volume corresponding to an activated volume flaw. DuXing 1942, Louisiana attained the rank of fourth among the great oil-producing states of this country. Its present prominent position is the result of an orderly and systematic program of exploitation with emphasis on conservation. Even before the functioning of M-68, the Federal spacing order, development and production in Louisiana were regulated by various acts of legislation, the most recent of which and by far the most effective is Act 157 of 1940. Under the authority of this act, it has been possible for the Department of Conservation to hold many public hearings and thereby to secure data and evidence regarding the feasibility of issuing rules and regulations for development of various oil and gas fields in the state. As a result of information compiled at such public hearings, many orders have been issued by the Commissioner of Conservation that have in most cases provided reasonable solutions to the problems that arise in the exploitation and development of fields in this state. Probably one of the most effective powers granted the Commissioner of Conservation in the state of Louisiana has been the authority to provide for fieldwide unitiza-tion and pooling of condensate fields. This has led to the erection of huge cycling plants in Louisiana, which permit the most efficient recovery of the liquid content of the reservoirs, and further conserve most of the gas reserve that undoubtedly will be of considerable future value. Many months have passed since various orders of the Department of Conservation were put into effect, and all are accomplishing their purpose; namely, the elimination of waste. Although the effectiveness of these orders provides considerable satisfaction to the members of the Department of Conservation, it is also a tribute to the members of the oil and gas industry in Louisiana, who, in addition to providing carefully prepared technical data, have also given unstinting cooperation and have thereby enabled the Department to cope intelligently with the many problems. Production On Dec. 31, 1942, oil and/or gas was being produced in 50 parishes, or 78 per cent of all the parishes in the state. Thirty-three of the parishes produced oil and gas, 12 produced oil, and 5 produced solely gas. This is indeed an enviable record for any state. However, it is reasonable to assume that eventually all parishes in the state of Louisiana will be productive. From a geological viewpoint, there is no apparent reason to assume otherwise—a point that a11 operators seeking oil and gas production in this state may well bear in mind. Twenty new fields were found during 1942—a rate of discovery that does not compare favorably with the 30 new fields found during 1941. The record of discoveries in Louisiana during 1942 is further disappointing when it is realized that 8 of the 20 new fields discovered were gas fields. In the January Bulletin a list was published of Societies' publications, magazines, etc., which were duplicates and were discarded at the time of-the consolidation of the libraries of the three Founder Societies. A second list published herewith includes text books which are duplicates and which will be disposed of about April 1, 1916, by the Board of Directors of the Institute through the, Library Committee.. If, meanwhile, members desire to secure some of these books, they are asked to communicate at once with the Secretary as. this is an unusual opportunity to secure books at an extremely low price. The Iron Ore Co. of Canada (IOC) has developed a computerized plan analysis method for its open-pit iron mining operations which will eliminate much of the tedious manual drafting of pit design plans performed by engineers and geologists at its two major operational areas near Schefferville, Que., and Labrador City, Nfld. The new technique permits analysis of section or bench plans for a specific ore body, based on drillhole information; preparation of a three-dimensional unit profit matrix for pit design purposes, and storage of extensive ore-block information for other applications. Other advantages include enhanced design accuracy through reduction of human errors normally associated with preparation of large data masses, and by elimination of errors inherent in planimeter-prepared ore block diagrams.

JOINT convention week has become a feature of the year with western mining men. The first was held at Denver in 1926, the second at Salt Lake City in 1927, and the third is about to take place at Los Angeles. Holding in the same city in one week the meetings of a number of related organizations has been .found to permit the development of a well-rounded program at the same time that it economizes time and money for the members, many of whom belong to several of the participating organizations. For the third time, the American Mining Congress, represented by its Western Division, of which Philip Wiseman is chairman, is taking the lead and assuming the main responsibility. The A.I.M.E. is furnishing the papers for two sessions and the California Development Association for one. The Southern California Section, Robert R. Boyd, chairman, is host for the Institute, but the Northern California, Nevada and Arizona sections have each contributed papers to the program, and will be represented at the meeting. It will be a real reunion of the mining men of the Southwest.

Iv 1897, Roberts-Austen(l)$ found an arrest in the thermal curves of alloys of 60 per cent. copper and 40 per cent. zinc. This break occurred from 450° to 470° C. Shepherd, (2) working in 1904, was unable to detect any change in the direction of the thermal curve. In 1911, Carpenter and Edwards(3) confirmed the work of Roberts-Austen and called this a eutectoid transformation of beta to alpha plus gamma. Hudson') in 1914, showed that the beta constituent could be produced synthetically at temperatures below the transformation point. He believed the change in the beta was polymorphic in nature rather than a eutectoid. The work of Matsuda(32) in 1922 demonstrated this break by thermal analysis, microscopic investigations, dilatation, electrical resistance measurements, and a thermoelectric study. He believed the transformation to be continuous from 300° to 480° C., and comparable to the A 2 transformation in iron. Later, in 1924, Andrew and Hay, with electrical resistance measurements, confirmed Matsuda's work. Imai(28) showed the transformation to be progressive and therefore a function of the temperature rather than the time. He stated that it was neither a eutectoid nor an allotropic change of phase. Atomistically expressed, it was a change, not of atomic configuration, but of atomic energy of some kind; and again it was compared to the A 2 transformation in iron. Imai believed that his analyses by X-rays led to the same conclusion. In order to study this change, at 470'C., in homogeneous 60:40 brass, Homerberg and Williams «0> and Homerberg and Shaw(41) quenched their material in iced brine to obtain the beta solid solution and reheated at various temperatures. At 200° C., a change in the microstructure and physical properties occurred. A fine-grained structure, which they termed alpha and which had the appearance of a sorbitic steel, appeared, with an increase in the tensile strength to 82,750 lb. per sq. in., and a Brinell ball hardness of 240 with 3000 kg. load. OWING largely to its value as a toughener and strengthener of steel for both industrial and military purposes, nickel is playing, an important role in the current war. It is fine of the metals in which the Allies enjoy a definite edge over the Axis nations and this time there is no place to which the Germans may send another submarine "Deutsehland" and expect to pick up a cargo of nickel to replenish their exhausted supplies. Total world nickel production thanks almost entirely to the expanded operation of the International Nickel Co. of Canada at Sudbury must now be at the rate of around 175,000 tons a year scarcely more than 5 per cent of which is accounted for by Germany, Italy and Japan. This represents more than four times the world output at the end of the first World War.

THE Sullivan concentrator has completed 20 years of operation. During this period a considerable amount of data has been accumulated concerning the characteristics of several types of flotation machines in their application to the problem of the differential separation of the lead sulphide, zinc sulphide and, in more recent times, iron sulphide, in the ore from the Sullivan mine. It is the author's intention to sketch briefly experiences encountered when the several types of flotation machines were introduced into the flow. ORIGINAL FLOTATION EQUIPMENT AND ORE The original flotation equipment consisted of four 18-cell lead-roughing machines, whose concentrate was cleaned in an 8-cell and recleaned in a similar 8-cell machine. Zinc concentration was carried out in four 18-cell machines. One 8-cell zinc re-treatment machine received the reground zinc middling. The 168 cells handled some 3000 tons of original daily feed. These cells were of the standard Minerals Separation type, equipped with 24-in. impellers. Spindles were driven through geared line shaft at a speed of 255 r.p.m. The impellers were the 45° type, except for the last three cells of the zinc-rougher machines, which were of sub-aeration type, with full bottom shroud and half shroud for the top side of the impellers. Four-pound air was introduced. This recognition of the benefit of intensified flotation operation for "gleaning" was an important phase in the early operation and will be discussed further on in this paper. Sullivan ore during this period is described as a finely disseminated mixture of four sulphides, totaling 90 per cent made up of 13.6 per cent galena, 14.4 per cent marmatite, 1 per cent pyrite and 61 per cent pyrrhotite. The specific gravity of the ore was approximately 4.4. There has been a gradual change in the ore content. The 10 per cent of nonsulphide constituents has increased to between 15 and 20 per cent and all three sulphides have dropped somewhat. Added equipment and changing technique have made possible the treatment of 8000 tons per day of mill feed instead of the 3000 originally handled. SPECIAL FEATURES OF FLOTATION AT SULLIVAN Sullivan flotation differs greatly from customary practice. The very heavy return of lead rougher middling and lead cleaner tailing, totaling at times 125 per cent of the new feed tonnage, has been the subject of much investigation. The practice is still employed.
