THAT veterans are crowding the colleges is no longer news; 78 per cent of the 1916-47 enrollment in mineral industries curricula in the United States were veterans, but the rapid comeback from an estimated 1262 total mineral industries students in 1944-45 to 11,422 in 1946-47 is almost astonishing. The figure, which includes 1008 graduate students, is a substantial increase over the previous top record of 9619 in 1938-39. A small part of the increase is caused by the larger number of women entering the field, of whom there were c 9 in 1916-47. Petroleum leads the curricula with 34.5 % of the enrollment, metallurgy is second with 28%, and mining is third with 18%. Table 1. shows all curricula offered and those accredited by ECPD. Using the Mississippi River as a dividing line, 31 colleges in the East and 27 in the West offer curricula in the mineral industries.

A theoretical development is presented which reformulates Fick's first law for diffusion in the solid state. The diffusion flux of component i in a multi-component system, Ji, is related to its local concentration, ci, and local jump frequency, ri : where a is a geometric factor and d is the jump distance. The product, ciri , is defined as the local concentration of atomic jumps for component i. The analog to Fick's second law is also derived. A solution to this equation is presented, which permits the experimental determination of the variation of atom jump frequency with composition in multicomponent systems. HISTORICALLY, the description of diffusion in the solid state has been presumed to be best approached as an application of more general diffusion laws, known as the phenomenological equations. These equations relate the flux, Ji, of the various components, expressed in atoms, grams, or volume, to the driving force involved, expressed as either a compositional or chemical potential gradient, sumption that the flux is simply proportional to the driving force is the foundation of this approach. The phenomenological equations take the form: where the concentration gradients are assumed to be the driving force, and: if the chemical potential gradient is taken as the driving force. The coefficients Dij in Eq. [1.] are the "diffusion coefficients"; the elements of the corresponding matrix in Eq. [2], the Mij, are called the "mobilities". Eqs. [I] and [2] may be considered to be definitions of these phenomenological coefficients. A formidable body of literature has been generated about these equations; this literature dates back to their original formulation for the simplest case of binary diffusion in a fluid, by Adolf Fick, in 1855.' This description has been shown to be self-consistent. However, the "constants of proportionality", the Dij or ,Mij, are not constant: they vary with composition in all but the simplest systems. Even in the case of tracer diffusion, wherein it can be shown that the diffusion coefficient is constant, the mobility, which is considered in irreversible thermodynamics to be the more physically meaningful quantity, varies with the concentration of the tracer involved.' In more complex systems, it is necessary to evaluate the entire matrix of phenomenological coefficients, as a function of composition, in order to describe diffusion locally. Further, in order to determine this matrix experimentally, it is necessary to produce diffusion couples that have different sequences of compositions; the matrix may be evaluated only at points where these "composition paths" cross.* Finally, and perhaps most

At Bethlehem's Grace mine's 6000-tpd pelletizing plant a cascade control system is utilized to approach a constant magnetite filter cake moisture, a critical factor in obtaining quality green pellets. Variables being controlled by instrumentation are filter feed solids, filter tub level, first and second stage pump sump levels and thickener sludge level, all at varying feed rates. Startup difficulties, modifications and contemplated additions to obtain closer control of the moisture are discussed. Situated 45 miles west of Philadelphia and 50 miles southwest of Bethlehem Steel Co. 's Beth-lehem plant, the integrated Grace mine facilities produce 4000 tpd of high-quality iron ore pellets. Startup of the Grace mill was in November 1958, and iron concentrates were shipped until March 1960, when the pellet plant went into operation. The underground mine, when fully developed, will hoist about 9000 tpd, including development rock. The crude ore, which has an iron content of approximately 42%, is magnetically cobbed and crushed in closed circuit with %-in. slotted vibrating screens. The ore is washed and screened in the mill and the 1/4-in. screen product is again cobbed prior to feeding to the rod mills. Grinding is done in rod mills, and in ball mills that are in closed circuit with 30-in. cyclones, to 1% on 100 mesh and 65% -325 mesh. The ground ore is magnetically concentrated by three-drum permanent-type finisher magnets to 67% Fe. The magnetite concentrate is pumped from the mill to a 50-ft thickener in the pellet plant. The thickened magnetite concentrate is relayed to the filters through a two-stage pump arrangement. The filter cake is fed by belt from filter concentrate bins to mixer-muller belts where it is intimately mixed with bentonite and a slight amount of water for moisture control. The fluffed concentrate then drops into balling cones. The green pellets from the balling cones are fed in a prescribed feed pattern to shaft furnaces through the use of shuttle car mechanisms. The green pellets are dried, heated to 2500°F and cooled to 1200°F as they descend through the furnace and into pellet coolers where the pellets are further reduced in temperature to 250°F. Heat is recovered in the cooling process through the use of air-to-air heat exchangers. The cooled pellets discharge on a rubber conveyor belt and are transferred to 6000-ton pellet railroad loading bin. The final pellet product consists of 90% +'1/4 in. material (after tumble testing1) and contains 66% Fe plus 3% silica. It has been the usual practice to maintain constant filter tank level by pumping an excess constant volume and using a moveable fishtail splitter to divert the desired amount of slurry to the filter tank. The excess from the fishtail and from the filter overflow pipe, which maintains a constant level, is returned to the source. Discussion of the paper of E. C. HARDER, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 94, October, 1914, pp. 2573 to 2586. I. C. WHITE, Morgantown, W. Va.-I have seen some of the great iron-ore deposits described in this paper. -One of these in the State of Minas Geraes appears to be an immense mountain of iron ore about 2,000 ft. in height. All over its surface from bottom to top may be seen large masses of rich iron ore, varying in weight from a few pounds to several tons, and from all that one can judge without exploitation, the quantity of available ore is certainly very large in this particular mountain. Whether it will prove a mere surface deposit or shell, like the famous Iron Mountain of Missouri, is for future exploration to determine. The question of transportation is the main factor in determining the availability for exportation of these Brazilian iron ores. There is no coal in Brazil that can be manufactured into coke without expensive previous treatment, since the best of the raw coal in the States of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catharina, and Parana, contains about 35 per cent. of ash, of which about 6 per cent. is sulphur, and coal of this composition cannot be utilized in iron smelting without purification. When I was chief of the Brazilian Coal Commission in 1904 to 1906, I had a cargo of this coal shipped to Balk, Germany, and treated in the great coal-testing plant of the Humboldt Engineering Works, located just across the Rhine from Cologne. It was found that by crushing and washing the Brazilian coal, it yielded 33 per cent. of briquetting coal, containing only 10 to 12 per cent. of ash (of which 1 per cent. was sulphur), and 42 per cent. of slack coal, with 25 per cent. of ash and low in sulphur, so that about 33 per cent. of the Brazilian coal could be converted into coke of fair quality, as shown by the following average of three analyses, using air-dried coal, of briquets made from the Barro Branco coal bed, State of Santa Catharina: Moisture 1.56 Volatile matter 31.66 Fixed carbon 56.73 Ash : 10.05 Total 100.00 Sulphur 1.34 Phosphorus 0.003 B.t.u 13,395

INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY Complex copper-lead-zinc ore is mined from underground workings high in the Western Cordillera of the Andes mountains about 100 km in a stralght line north of the city of Arequipa in southern Peru. The Madrigal mine is situated in a steep-walled canyon into which the six operating levels "daylight". Production is from cut-and-fill stopes currently producing approximately 740 dry metric tons per day. The Santa Rosa vein, the most important producer in the district, outcrops for a distance of about 4 km, bearing N 75º W and dipping about 70º NE. In places the vein splits into two or three branches; widths of each vary between 1 and 4 m and total mineralized widths of up to over 8 m occur. Principal ore minerals are chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite. Ore reserve grades for the Madrigal mine average about 1.45% Cu, 2.6% Pb and 5.0% Zn, 2.9 ozAg per metric ton. I WISH to urge on this Committee the task of evaluating mining geology. -My motive is as follows: It, is a. duty of the Institute from time to5 time, to establish the social perspective of the professions grouped within it, not simply to promote their use, but to determine with engineering definiteness their true powers and functions. This becomes the delegated duty, therefore, of this committee in respect to geology. Be- cause my own subject is mining, I shall confine my remarks to mining geology. But I believe that the evaluation should be made to include all of that geology termed economic. The perspective for such evaluation is shown in the nature of the public support given to geology. The federal Geological Survey, the leading organization on the economic side, is actuated by the zeal of a small group of devoted professionals who consider its work valuable, ' It proceeds, however, on a starvation ration of appropriations, and that implies that neither the corporations, the voters nor the vote getters consider it important. Altogether, in' the public consciousness, geology is negligible. That, at the same moment, .the profession should act with full confidence, while everyone else should act' with opposite motives, is not fitting. For us, as a committee, to remain incurious regarding such a disparity of beliefs is quite impossible.

Thirty years ago a party of American Engineers, with members of their families, belonging to the four national engineering societies, sailed for Europe and visited England and the Paris Exposition of 1889 and received many courtesies, official, professional, and individual. Plans: have been made for a reunion dinner to be held in New York City, about May 26, at which it is hoped that all survivors, ladies as well as men, of that trip may meet again. THE publication of the report by Mr. F. L. Ransome was welcomed by many engineers who had mined in the heart of the Sail Juan country, braved its long and snowy winters, climbed its lofty peaks, run the gauntlet of its snow-slides, and studied its problems of geology, while making dividends for their English or American clients. This report helps one to understand why the bonanzas occurred, and why the inevitable borrasca presents itself where least expected. The Red Mountain district of Ouray county, a very productive section from 1884 to 1893, occupies considerable space in the report mentioned.. The character of the ore-occurrence, being distinctive and presenting many features not existing elsewhere, has been deserving of special study. It is to be regretted that Mr. Ransome was .unable to observe the conditions underground, as all the principal properties, many of which I opened and developed, were closed at the time of his investigation: It has been my privilege to have contributed a few brief papers recording my observations in developing these properties ; and it is the object of the present paper to present certain sections of the Yankee Girl mine, which throw additional light on the geology of the section and make the available data more complete. The main Yankee Girl chimney or " stock" was the most productive for the first 500 ft. in depth of any chimney in the district.

Early this year at the University of Arizona in Tucson, a survey was made of student opinion about the minerals industry. Over 100 of the three page questionnaires were completed and these were analyzed by the following categories: 40 Mining Engineering students, 20 Geological Engineering with 2 Geophysical Engineering students, 15 Geology students, 7 Metallurgical Engineering, 26 Underclassmen, 29 Graduate students and a composite of 84 total students. Not all of the results of the survey were predictable. After graduation there is a strong preference toward going to work in the mineral industries. The next most popular options, but trailing the first choice greatly, was graduate work or employment in another industry. A smattering of other choices were for teaching, government or research. None checked the box for drop out.

TWO intermediate phases enter into equilibrium with the primary solid solutions of titanium.' The TiMn2 phase was identified by Wallbaum2 as of the C14 type isomorphous with MgZn2. Contrary to Maykuth, et al.,¹ the phase occuring at about the 50-50 atomic proportion has been shown to derive from a peritectoid reaction.:' A 30 day anneal at 900°C of an alloy containing 52 wt pct Mn developed sufficient of the new phase to give a clear and predominant diffraction pattern. The powder pattern was taken in a 14 cm diameter powder camera using filtered Cu Ka radiation. In all, 75 lines were recognized and measured. Interplanar spacing and observed intensities for the first 26 of these are given in Table I.

Electron diffraction and transmission electron microscopy on foils at room temperature were used to investigate the ordering of Fe-Si alloys containing 10 to 23 at. pct Si. A certain degree of DO3 order was found in all alloys. With the exception of the lowest silicon concentration for which the antiphase domains could not be clearly resolved, the alloys have a domain structure of two-domain type with boundaries having 1/4a01<111> displacement vectors for less than 12.3 at. pct Si and with boundaries having 1/2 a0<100> displacement vectors for more than 12.3 at. pct Si. The alloys with 12.3 at. pct Si have a domain structure consisting of fine domains with 1/2a&apos;o<100> boundaries within much larger domains with 1/4a&apos;o<111> boundaries. The development of these structures can be explained by transition of the alloy from the disordered state into the B2-type order and then into the D03-type order by the mechanism proposed previously for the FeSAl alloys. The existence of the B2 structure in the lower part of the investigated concentration range reported in some articles can be explained by fine domains with 1/2a&apos;o<100> boundaries formed by several disordered planes within large domains with 1/4a&apos;o<111> boundaries. The ordered structure predicted by the theory —with practically no domain boundaries —is found in the alloys having 12.3 at. pct Si where it develops in the B2 structure region. ORDERING in Fe-Si alloys was first studied by phragmenl who found that beginning with 13 at. pct Si the DO3 (Fe3Si) superlattice reflections appear in the diffraction patterns. The equilibrium diagrams constructed later by corson2 and Haughton3 from various measurements proposed the existence of a homogeneous solid solution (a phase) in the range from 0 to 25 at. pct Si. Jette and Greiner4 and Farquhar et al.5 measured the relation between lattice parameter and composition and they considered the break in the curve at 9 to 10 at. pct Si to be caused by the ordered solution a"(Fe3Si). Glaser and Ivanick6 Determined critical ordering temperatures of the alloys containing from 10.9 to 27.9 at. pct Si from the measurement of the electric resistivity of quenched samples. In all cases the critical temperature was lower than the melting point and it was highest for 25 at. pct Si. Lihl and Ebel7 measured the lattice parameter curves at various temperatures up to 1000°C. The region between two breaks on these curves, corresponding to 10 to 12.5 at. pct Si at room temperature, was considered by them to be two-phase (a + a"). They concluded by extrapolation of the measured values that a" in the alloy having 25 at. pct Si is stable up to the melting point. Davies8 studied superlattice reflections in the X-ray diffraction patterns of an alloy containing 8.7 at. pct Si. He found the B2 structure and short-range order in the slowly cooled samples and the DO3 A. IMD structure in the quenched and annealed samples. This investigation first reports the presence of the B2 structure, phase a&apos;: in Fe-Si alloys. Meinhardt and krisement9,10 also found its existence in Fe-Si alloys by neutron diffraction. No order was detected by them in the alloy containing 8 at. pct Si. The onset of B2 order was observed at a composition of 9.2 at. pct Si. They found almost perfect B2-type order with partial DO3-type order at room temperature in the 10 to 12.5 at. pct Si range and almost perfect DO3-type order in the 12.5 to 25 at. pct Si range. They established the critical temperatures Tc of both the structures through measurement at higher temperatures. The critical temperature for the B2 structure was found to be always higher than the critical temperature for the DO3 structure of the same alloy. They extrapolated the curves of the critical temperatures and concluded that the alloys with more than 17 at. pct Si have the B2 structure up to the melting point and the alloys with more than 23 at. pct Si have the DO3 structure up to the melting point. The results of Meinhardt and krisement9,10 were confirmed by Dokken&apos;s measurement" of the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity in the 10.8 to 15 at. pct Si range. On the other hand chessin12 detected by X-ray diffraction a considerably lower degree of order in the 12.7 at. pct Si alloy. ANTIPHASE DOMAIN STRUCTURE IN ALLOYS WITH B2- AND DO$-TYPE ORDER The ordered structures B2 and DO3 can be described in terms of a subdivision of the bcc lattice into four fcc sublattices with a parameter double that of the bcc lattice. Following Marcinkowski13 we will label them I. 11, 111, IV. The B2 structure in the AB alloy is formed by placing A atoms on sublattices I and II and B atoms on sublattices III and IV. In a non-stoichiometric perfectly ordered alloy having concentration (A) > (B), A atoms occupy sublattices I and 11. and A and B atoms distributed at random occupy sublattices III and IV. The DO3 structure in an A3B alloy is formed by placing A atoms on sublattices I, 11, and 111, and B atoms on sublattice IV. In a nonstoichiometric, perfectly ordered alloy having concentration (A)/3 > (B), A atoms occupy sublattices I, 11, and 111, and A and B atoms distributed at random occupy sublattice IV. As further shown in Ref. 13, two types of domains are possible in the B2 superlattice and the antiphase domain structure has associated with it boundaries with displacement vectors 1/4 a&apos;o<ll1> only. Four types of domains are possible in the DO3 superlattice and the antiphase domain structure has associated with it boundaries with displacement vectors 1/4a&apos;o<111> and 1/2a&apos;o<l00>. Bethe14 suggested on the basis of theoretical considerations that in a structure with two sublattices at low temperatures only one domain should be present in the whole crystal at equilibrium. In the spring of 1943, when it was evident that the Tensleep bandstone in the Elk Basin Field, Wyoming and Montana, held a large reserve of petroleum, Bureau of Mines engineers obtained samples of oil from the bottom of nine wells and analyzed them for such physical characteristics as the volumes. of gas in solution. saturation pressures or bubble points, shrinkage in volume caused by the release of gas from solution, expansion of the oil with decrease in pressure, and other related properties. The composition of the gas in solution in the oil was studied. The pressures and temperatures existing in the reservoir and the productivity characteristics of the oil wells were determined. The data obtained indicate that the oil in the Tensleep Reservoir of the Elk Basin Field has unusually varying physiral characteristics, such as a saturation pressure of 1,250 psia and 490 cu ft of gas in solultion in a barrel of oil at the crest of the structure and a saturation pressure of 530 psia and 134 cu ft of gas in solution in a barrel of oil low on the flanks. The hydrogen sulfide content of the gas in solution in the oil varies from 18 per cent for oil on the crest to 5 per cent for oil low on the flanks of the structure. Of even greater significance is the fact that these and other variable characteristics of the reservoir oil are related to the position of the oil in the structure. Many geologists and petroleum engineers have considered that all the oil in a petroleum reservoir has rather uniform physical characteristics and that equilibrium conditions prevailed in all underground accumulations of oil and gas; that such is not always so is borne out by the results of the study by the writers. INTRODUCTION The Rocky Mountain region is one in which may be found striking examples of the unusual in oil and gas accumulations, as is evident from the following: The high helium content (7.6 per cent) of the gas in the Ouray-Leadville limestone sequence in the Rattlesnake Field, New Mexico, and gases of similar helium content in other fields; 50" to 55&apos; API gravity distillate in solution in carbon dioxide gas and recoverable through retrograde condensation, in the North McCallum Field, Colorado; the occurrence of gas, oil, or both in closely related structures contrary to the usual concepts of gravimetric segregation: the accumulation of gas and/or oil in structures closely related to other structures that apparently are more favorable but do not contain oil or gas accumulations; the high hydrogen sulfide content (as high as 42 per cent) of the gas associated with oil in some fields in the Big Horn Basin, Wyoming; and the wide range of fluid chararteristics found in the Elk Basin reservoir. Elk Basin, an interesting old oil field that has been producing oil from the Frontier formation since 1915, is situated in a highly eroded basin resulting from the erosion of the crest of an anticline and some of the underlying softer shales. The field came back into national prominence during 1943 when it became known that it was the largest single reserve of new oil discovered in the United States that year. The Tensleep sandstone was found to contain oil in November. 1942, when a well drilled to a depth of 4,538 ft (44 ft into the Tensleep sandstone) flowed oil at the rate of 2,500 B/D. By the end of 1949, 137 oil-producing wells and five dry holes had been drilled, and approximately 32 million bbl of oil had been produced. Approximately 6,000 acres may be considered productive of oil in the Tensleep Reservoir, and estimates of the oil that will be produced average 200 million bbl. The Tensleep Reservoir has further interest because it ha-greater closure than any oil field in the Rocky Mountain region; the closure of the Elk Basin anticline is variously estimated at 5.000 to 10,000 ft. of which the top 2.00 ft of the structure contained oil. SUBSURFACE OIL SAMPLING Fig. 1 is a structural map of the Elk Basin Tensleep Reservoir, on which the nine wells used in this study and the numbers correvponding to the well designations hereafter referred to are shown. Wells 1. 2, 3, 4, and 8 were tested and sampled during October and November. 1943. and Wells 5, 6. 7, and 9 during June and July, 1944. An electromagnetic type sampler developed by the Bureau of Mines and described by Grandone and Cook&apos; was used in obtaining the subsurface oil samples. As the wells were tubed nearly to bottom, the sampler was run as far as possible in the tubing hut never below the top perforations. The Tensleep Reservoir has further interest because it ha-greater closure than any oil field in the Rocky Mountain region; the closure of the Elk Basin anticline is variously estimated at 5.000 to 10,000 ft. of which the top 2.00 ft of the structure contained oil. SUBSURFACE OIL SAMPLING Fig. 1 is a structural map of the Elk Basin Tensleep Reservoir, on which the nine wells used in this study and the numbers correvponding to the well designations hereafter referred to are shown. Wells 1. 2, 3, 4, and 8 were tested and sampled during October and November. 1943. and Wells 5, 6. 7, and 9 during June and July, 1944. An electromagnetic type sampler developed by the Bureau of Mines and described by Grandone and Cook&apos; was used in obtaining the subsurface oil samples. As the wells were tubed nearly to bottom, the sampler was run as far as possible in the tubing hut never below the top perforations. One of the little electric-resistance magnesia crucible-furnaces which I designed for the metallurgical laboratory of the School of Mines of Columbia University is shown, in vertical section, of full natural size, in Fig. 1. The furnace itself consists of two semi-cylinders of magnesia, A A, with a cover of magnesia, B B, and a stopper, C, also of magnesia, which is perforated to admit the leads x, y, of a thermo-electric couple. The furnace is heated by the spiral of platinum wire, D D (entering and departing by the openings I and K), through which a current of any desired strength is passed, bringing it to incandescence, and to ally temperature, not above the melting-point of platinum, which may be desired. The crucible E, actually used in this furnace, is also of magnesia. I have heard of some unsuccessful attempts with furuaces of this general class, and have attributed these failures to the use of siliceous materials for the furnace-walls. Of course such a result is what we should expect, since the silica mould readily be electrolysed by the current, and the resultant silicon would alloy with platinum ; but the little magnesia furnace here clescribed seems to be wholly free from this objection. It has been used in my laboratory for some months, and temperatures, up to 1100° C, hare been developed in it over considerable periods of time—indeed, it has been held near 1400" C. for about two hours—without indication, thus far, of any deterioration of the platinum. In the section shown, F F are a pair of steel disks, bound together, but separated by the inverted thermo-junction, N, of the thermo-electric pyrometer. This arrangement permits the observation and record of retardations in the heating and cooling of F F—in other words, the determinations of the cooling curves of steel—a purpose for which the furnace has been used, thus far, more frequently than in the determination of meltingpoints. For the latter operation, however, it is also suitable.

THE little village, from which this formation receives its name, is situated on a bluff of the Alabama River, 175 feet above water level. This bluff is a portion of high table land that begins in the western portion of Choctaw and extends through Clarke and Monroe counties. We find points on this ridge more than 100 feet higher than Tuscaloosa, and nearly as high as the Tennessee River at Tuscumbia. Through this the Alabama River cuts its way, exposing a beautiful cross-section of the strata, of which the accompanying sketch may give some idea. The fossils are found about 75 feet below the surface and 100 feet above the level of the river. There are seven distinct strata. 1. The lowest, extending from the water&apos;s edge up the bluff 80 feet, is a soft calcareous rock containing about 15 per cent. of carbonate of lime, with occasional specks of mica. In this a few Ostrea, Turritellce, and Flustrce were found, but so friable as to fall to pieces when handled. 2. Next comes a stratum varying from 2 to 8 feet, consisting of

ESTIMATION of re- serves in prorated sand fields has been discussed by S. A. Judson, H. D. Easton, Jr., and W. A. Schaeffer, Jr., in a paper that appears in Vol. 114 (1935), of the A.I.M.E. TRANSACTIONS. The purpose of this present paper is to extend the investigation to prorated flush limestone fields and to outline a method of procedure in determining the amount of oil originally in place and the amount of oil that can be recovered from such fields. Although it is possible to use the decline curves to estimate the amount of recoverable oil in certain limestone fields that are allowed to produce the oil at or near capacity production, such a method cannot be used in fields under severely restricted production rates. The problem is exceedingly complex due to fluctuation in the allowable rates of oil production over a wide range and at frequent intervals, and especially because of the heterogeneous nature of the reservoir itself. A well completed in a large solution cavity, capable of producing great quantities of oil per day, may be offset by a well of very limited capacity. Also, it is di5cult to arrive at an average figure for porosity in a given limestone reservoir due to abrupt variations in the character of limestone, in many instances even between two ad- joining wells. It is a safe statement that uniformity of porosity and permeability in limestone reservoirs .is nonexistent. It is evident, therefore, that the method of estimation of re- serves on the basis of per-acre content can give only approximate results.

Britannia metal is a white alloy consisting primarily of tin and antimony, the tin greatly predominating. The alloy usually contains a small amount of copper and occasionally very small amounts of one or two other metals, such as bismuth, zinc, and lead. It is capable of being cold-rolled, it takes a high polish, and it is fairly noncorrosive; properties which make it a popular metal for many household and traveling utensils. Britannia metal is similar in many respects to pewter and has largely replaced pewter in the arts, but it should not be confused with that alloy, because pewter is essentially a tin-lead alloy, while Britannia is a tin-antimony alloy. In view of the fact that so little has been published concerning Britannia metal, the authors feel justified in presenting the results of their investigation, particularly since the behavior of this alloy under cold rolling and heat treatment differs so greatly from that of other metals and alloys. The old craftsman, engaged in the making of ornaments or tableware, heated the cold-rolled sheet metal or his finished product to a straw color corresponding to about 375" I?., claiming to produce thereby a harder and more rigid article. The fact that possibly led him to this heating was that a reheated article or sheet made from Britannia metal has a distinct metallic ring when struck a sharp blow, whereas an unheated article or sheet has a leady, dead note. No doubt he has associated the metallic ring with a greater rigidity and strength, and justly so, as will be seen later. The approximate analysis of the metal we investigated was 91 Sn, 7 Sb, 2 Cu, and the molten metal was bottom-poured into an iron mold yielding an ingot 7 3/4 in. wide by 11 in. long and % in. thick, the casting temperature being 800" F. The ingot was cold-rolled to a sheet 0.032 in. thick, sufficiently large samples for experimental purposes being cut from the sheet at intermediate stages. The samples were all tested for hardness with scleroscope and Brine11 machine, then heated to 212" F. for 30 min., and again tested after cooling to room temperature. Borehole models used in the study of nuclear well logging are reviewed and the merit of heterogeneous us homogeneous formation simulation is discussed. .A heterogeneous model for simulating sandstone formations of variable porosity is described. Simulation adequacy was checked by steady-state and pulsed-neutron measurements. INTRODUCTION In the course of developing new methods of nuclear well logging, the problem of testing new logging instruments under controlled conditions always arises. This testing is usually done in wells of known lithology, porosity and fluid saturation, or in laboratory test facilities which simulate the borehole environment. Although the former approach is possibly more satisfying, it is frequently difficult or inconvenient to find wells with enough variation in the cited parameters for a truly comprehensive study, On the other hand. laboratow- test facilities can simulate a wide variety of formation and borehole conditions if care is exercised to maintain adequate simulation under all conditions. Workers concerned with the development of nuclear well logging methods have reported several types of research facilities in the past. Tittle, et a1 used cubical tanks filled with Ottawa silica sand to study the steady-state behavior of thermal and epithemal neutrons in simulated sandstone logging environments.1 In addition to the effects of fresh vs salt water, a wide variety of casing sizes and compositions were investigated. Tittman also used a large tank of Ottawa sand to measure the slowing down length of sio2;2 for making the same measurement in CaCO3, however, an assembly of solid Vermont marble blocks was used. More recently a very useful and carefully planned test pit for nuclear logs was constructed under the auspices of the API.3 This facility consists of three massive limestone sections, each 6-ft thick and more than 5 ft in diameter. The blocks are buried, one on top of the other, in a concrete- lined pit having a total depth of 24 ft. Each section is made of a different limestone to achieve porosity variation, the selection being Carthage (2 per cent), Indiana (19 per cent) and Austin (26 per cent). The blocks are traversed by a 7 7/8-in. diameter borehole and are saturated with fresh water. Great care was taken to insure total saturation of the stone. Homogeneous mixtures and materials have not been used exclusively for simulating earth formations. Tittle, et a1 4 showed that a heterogeneous lattice of water and graphite could be used to simulate Liquid furfural with very little effecton measured thermal and epi thermal neutron distributions. Subsequently, a lattice-type model for simulating limestone earth formations was designed and built by Berry This limestone model was constructed of 7/8- x 11/4- x 36411. marble rods glued together with a plastic resin to form a 36-x 42- x 42in. cube. The cube was honeycombed vertically with 7/8- x 7/8- x 3641-1. holes for porosity and had a 111/2-in. diameter hole in the center to serve as the borehole. Lower porosities were simulated by placing marble rods in the square holes. The finished cube was used with the borehole vertical and set in a tank to hold liquid for filling the holes in the rock matrix. A second type of heterogeneous borehole model has been proposed by Kukharenko, et a1.6= In this concept the model is composed entirely of solid material. The hydrogen equivalent of formation fluids is simulated by making the model of alternating layers of dense rock and celluloid. Additional hydrogen is included by drilling vertical holes in the rock sections and filling them with solid forms of hydrogeneous material. The volume of the holes is equal to the volume of the celluloid layers, so an axial and radial dispersion of the hydrogeneous material is thus obtained. One such model was composed of alternate 50 mm-thick sand layers and 2 mm-thick celluloid sheets. Approximately 200 appropriately spaced plastic tubes were used in each sand section. The plastic tubes were filled with paraffin for additional hydrogen concentration. This arrangement yielded a model with a water-equivalent hydrogen concentration of 10 per cent. Experimental data taken in this model and in a model consisting of the same material but homogeneously dispersed showed that the heterogeneous system adequately

HEREWITH is presented a preliminary report of a special committee, consisting of Erle V. Daveler, Paul D. Merica, and C. H. Mathewson (chairman), dealing with sundry matters of which many are of vital interest to all members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. As the report states, the initial purpose of the investigation was to determine ways and means to stimulate "the welfare and growth" of the Institute of Metals and Iron and Steel Divisions. However, it soon became apparent to the committee that most of the problems and possible correctives were of no less vital concern 1o members of the other Divisions and to the "unattached" group of members. Consequently, the Committee has authorized publication of the report and invites written comment from any member on the specific recommendations or on any other phase of the broad subject.
