The present paper comprises two parts, which have but little con nection with each other. The first is practically a continuation of the investigation on the specific gravity of gold liberated by means of acids from its alloys, on which subject I had the honor of presenting a brief note to the Institute in 1893 (Trans., xxii., 117); the second describes a series of experiments on the behavior of amorphous gold under the action of heat. By the kindness of Prof. W. C. Roberts-Austen, C.B., F.R.S., chemist to the Royal Mint, I have been permitted to conduct these experiments in the mint assay-office, all the splendid resources of which institution were freely placed at my disposal. I desire at the outset to express my obligations to Prof. Roberts-Austen and to all the staff of the mint assay-office for their kind assistance at all stages of my experiments. I.—The Specific Gravity of Gold in Alloys. In the note already referred to, I published my discovery that the gold left on dissolving out the silver from an alloy of gold and silver (which I shall here term " residual amorphous gold ") has a higher specific gravity than ordinary molten gold. I also pointed out that I had worked on very small quantities of material and with balances and weights on the accuracy of which I could not implicitly rely, and that in so far my numerical data were inconclusive, although I had but little doubt of the correctness of the broad fact. The experiments now recorded were made under the most advantageous circumstances and with various refinements. Particularly, I found that the ordinary form of specific-gravity bottle was responsible for several small sources of error; and I accordingly designed an improved form (Journal of the Society of Chemical Industry, April 30,1894, vol. xiii., p. 322), which I used for this work. A method of illumination that enhances the value of microscopic study of opaque materials, as in metallography. By simulating natural lighting, structures. That possess relief are given a natural appearance. An example is included of the revelation of a hitherto invisible microconstituent. Erroneous interpretation is avoided. For example, etching figures in ferrite, heretofore considered to be pits, are revealed as pyramids, standing in bas-relief. Suggestions on technique are given, for, while the method is obvious, practice and attention to detail are requisite. ON one occasion when it seemed desirable to reveal under the microscope not only the metallic structure of an alloy, but certain small non-metallic inclusions, that are ordinarily obliterated by etching, it was discovered that, by partly eclipsing the illuminating pencil of light rays, the residual light was thrown on the object from one side and the structure was brought out in relief. At the same time, the non-metallic inclusions were retained in clear view. In this first demonstration of lighting obliquely through the objective a card was thrust part way into the light beam between the arc iris, and the light filter; the shadow of the card on the filter served to locate its position. Next several stiff-paper disks of various diameters were mounted on flexible wires some plasticine on the other end of the wires made it easy to adjust and maintain a disk at any desired position in the light beam. To facilitate manipulation, an assortment of disks, was mounted on a wheel, as shown in Fig. 1. The purpose of partly eclipsing the light beam was discussed in an earlier paper.1 There it was pointed out that the usual methods of illuminating opaque objects for microscopic examination lend an, un-natural appearance to, the view, while the new method, which has been termed conical illumination, revels the true relationship of constituents by simulating natural lighting.

ACCORDING to the "reaction-path" modell,2 of martensite nucleation, the shear angle of the embryonic martensite plate must be treated as a variable, and included in any calculation of nucleus critical size. Also, as can be deduced from this model, the interfacial free energy between austenite and martensite does not reach its final value until the shear is completed. It is zero for zero shear angle. However, in order to account for the kinetics of the martensite transformation, some sort of interfacial energy barrier appears to be necessary even with the reaction-path model, for otherwise the volume and the energy of formation of the critical size nucleus both collapse to zero.3 Cohen independently suggested that surface energy could be incorporated into the reaction-path model, with the overall free energy of a martensite embryo being a function of its volume and shear angle.' It is possible to estimate the energy associated with the formation of a critical-size martensite nucleus starting with the reaction-path model and including a surface free-energy barrier. As the dependence of interfacial free energy upon shear angle is unknown, a simple type of dependence will be assumed, with the belief that the true dependence would not lead to appreciably different results. Consider the work required to form a lenticular martensite plate with radius r, thickness t, and shear angle 8. There are three contributions; one being the interfacial free energy, one being the free energy change in the martensite plate, and one being the free energy increase in the surrounding austenite. The interfacial free energy u is assumed to depend upon the shear angle 0 according to the relationship s=s0(?/?0)n [1] where 8, is the equilibrium shear angle and n is an exponent that may lie in the range 0 n 2. The work required to form the interfaces of a martensite plate then is W. = 2pr² s0(?/?0)n [2] The free energy change per unit volume of martensite is composed of two parts, one the ordinary volume free energy ?f1. which is negative, and the other the elastic strain energy G?m²/2, where G is the shear modulus and 7, the shear strain relative to the martensite structure. This expression for the strain energy is valid only when the shear strain ym, is sufficiently small that the martensite is within its linear elastic range. There is no doubt that ym, lies beyond the linear elastic range for embryos that are considerably subcritical. However, for critical nuclei it will be shown that ym, is 1.5 pct or less, within the linear elastic range of martensite. For embryos of nearly critical size, then, the strain energy of the martensite is correctly given by G?m²/2. The shear strain in the martensite is ym, = 8, — 8, and the work required to form the strained martensite is Wm --= (pr²t/2) [?fv + G(?O - ?)²/2] [3] The free energy change in the austenite is entirely that due to elastic distortion. The elastic strain is not uniformly distributed in the austenite, being large near the martensite plate and small elsewhere. Approximately, however, the energy corresponds to a uniform shear strain ya= (?t/2)/r [4] throughout the volume 4pr³/3 surrounding the plate. The work required to strain the surrounding austenite then is Wa = (4pr³/3) (G?a²/2) = (G?²/6) prt² [51 For simplicity, the same shear modulus G is assumed for each structure. The total free energy for forming a plate then is W = W3 + Wm + Wa. = 2pr² s0 (?/p?0)n + (pr²t/2) [?fr+G(?0-?)²/2] + (G?²6) prt2 [6] This expression is correct for nuclei and for embryos of nearly critical size, where, as will be shown, the strain energy in the martensite is correctly given by the expression G (? — ?)². Having W as a function of r, t, and 8, as in Eq. 6, there is a saddle-point where W has a stationary value, W subsequently decreasing indefinitely as the nucleus volume increases along the reaction path. The stationary value of W is the energy of the critical nucleus. The critical nucleus has radius, thickness, and shear angle such that ?W/?r - awlat: = ?W/?p? = 0. The need for mechanized drilling to decrease mining costs has resulted in the development of the jumbo from column-and-bar drill carriages to hydraulically controlled jib jumbos. Resultant savings from use of improved jumbos have been high enough usually to retire the machinery investment within a year. The jib jumbo unit has been applied successfully to development and preparation programs and flat-bedded stopes, and an even wider field is forecast for its use.

The Secretary of the Treasury, in a recent ruling, allows 18 months from date of discharge within which former service men may reinstate their Government insurance policies lapsed f or non-payment of premiums. The point just now confronting the Bureau of War Risk Insurance and all those who are interested in the immediate and the future welfare of the young men who offered their lives for the flag and the country is that they be kept mindful that the provisions of the War Risk Act were not solely war measures, but that the framers of the Act provided insurance protection for all time to come for the boys in uniform and all dear to them. Under this ruling those making application for reinstatement will be required to pay only the premium on the amount of insurance to be reinstated for the month of grace during which they were protected, and for the current month. When the men are mustered out of the service, the insurance continues in force for one month and they are fully protected during that period even if their premium has remained unpaid. In reinstating, that month's premium will be required as well as the premium for the month in which reinstatement is effected. The ruling also stipulates that when applying for reinstatement the man must be in as good health as at the date of discharge, and so state in his application. After complying with these simple requirements, a Government insurance policy may be made as sound as on the day it was written. The Bureau of War Risk Insurance is now searching out its delinquent policy holders and offering them this renewal of Government protection. It needs the assistance of public spirited, patriotic, business and professional men everywhere, for the sake of our former service men, who must be given the information about its privileges to which they are entitled.

Tailings dam construction and operation of Rosario Dominicana's gold/silver mine in the Dominican Republic is described. Impoundment of 8.5 kt/d of cyanide-process tailings is required in an intensive agricultural area which is also an earthquake and high rainfall zone. The earthfill embankment dam, incorporating internal gravel drains, is described together with methods of construction used. Methods of tailings transport, solution reclaim, and runoff water diversion that have evolved are discussed.

NONMETALLIC minerals (excluding fuels) arid their primary products produced annual in the United States have a value in excess of one billion dollars, or more than that of the metals, yet the lack of expert knowledge of some of the fundamental technical and economic aspects of this most important and complicated business is astonishing. This paper will deal with the economics of this non- metallic mineral field-the business of making money from producing these minerals. The incentive behind all business activity in a capitalistic economy is to make money-to plan so that each dollar invested in property, plant, equipment, services, and so on will return more than a dollar plus simple interest. Of course, business has social, civic, and national duties and responsibilities, but the fulfillment of these is largely dependent upon financial success.

AS the term "hardness" is used with many different meanings, it should be understood that it here means resistance to deformation by compression. It was determined by measuring the pressure, in pounds per square inch, necessary to reduce by 20 per cent., the length of cylinders 1 in. (25 mm.) in diameter by 2.6 in. (66 mm.) long. The tests were made at Columbia University on an Olsen 400,000-lb. machine, the load being applied at a constant rate of speed 0.0319 in. per min. The results were obtained by Messrs. Rigg and Williams, and some of them were given in a paper read at the Sixteenth Annual Meeting of the American Society for Testing Materials, in June, 1913. The remainder of the results were obtained in subsequent experiments by the same authors. In all cases, the results given are the averages of three or more closely concordant tests. All of the spelters tested were of standard commercial grades and all were of compositions making them good deliveries. The accompanying table gives the results arranged in the order of increasing hardness:

MORE than 80 per cent. of the iron produced in the United States and over 30 per cent. of the world's annual production is obtained in the Lake Superior district. Though iron ore was discovered on the Marquette range in 1844, the poor transportation facilities retarded the development of this region for many years. The structure of the Lake Superior basin is essentially an east-west synclinorium with steep dips on the south side of the lake and considerably flatter ones on the north and west. The Upper Huronian series, which -is the iron-bearing one of the formation, on the south side of the lake dips north from 55' to 80°, and on the north side dips south from 8" to 200. The series has been subjected to local folding and faulting, which have influenced the development of the mining systems used.

The surface tension of lead-tellurium alloys (in the range 0 to 6.70 at. pct Te) ad lead-arsenic alloys (in the range 0 to 10.53 at. pct As) has been examined by the maximum bubble pressure method. The surface tension of high purity lead can be expressed over a range of temperatures (M.P. to 750°C) by the relationship = 512 — 0.133t. Arsenic and lellurium were both found to be surface active in lead. The surface excess concentration at 700°C was .found to be constant at 0.74 x 10-10 moles per sq cm for tellurium. The surface excess of arsenic at 700°C varied between 0.26 x 10-10 moles per sq cm at 0.16 at. pct to 1.5 x 10-10 moles per sq cm at 8.3 at. pet. The surface tension of lead has been investigated sporadically over the last 90 years. The first recorded study was made by Quincke1 who used a rather crude application of the drop-weight method. Hogness2 obtained the first reliable value for the surface tension of lead by measuring the pressure necessary to force the liquid metal from the end of a small capillary of known radius. Hogness gives the empirical formula: ?(surface tension)= 444 - 0.077 (l-327) which describes the relationship between surface tension and temperature ("C); This work was followed by that of Bircumshaw3 who applied the two-capillar maximum bubble pressure method of Sugden.4 The values published by Bircumshaw are in good agreement with those found by Hogness. Matuyama5 examined the surface tension of lead by the drop weight method. However, the values found are somewhat higher than those previously reported. More recent investigations by Greenaway6 and by Melford and oar' have resulted in data which are not in close agreement, but which are well within the expected range at most temperature levels. The study of the surface tension of lead alloys began with Drath and sauerwald8 who examined the lead-bismuth system. They found that the surface tension values of the alloys in this system deviated only slightly from the ideal mixture rule. Matuyarna5 examined the lead-antimony system. Bircumshaw the lead-tin, and the lead-indium system was studied by Hoar and Me1ford.10 The results of these investi- gations are summarized in Fig. 1. It may be seen that the data vary only slightly from the ideal mixture rule. As none of the metals studied and reported in the literature has a very interesting effect on the surface tension of lead,*the next logical step might be to examine the effect of metals of low solubility or nonmetals having some liquid solubility. Baes, and Kellogg11 have pointed out that the elements most likely to be surface active in liquid metals are ones of limited solubility in the liquid state and possessing weak intermolecular bonding forces in the solid state. Therefore, Group V, VI and VII nonmetals are most likely to be surface active. It was decided to examine the effect of a borderline metal, arsenic, and a nonmetal tellurium. Arsenic forms a eutectic with lead having a melting point of 290°C and a composition of 6.9 at. pct As.13 Pure arsenic sublimes when heated above 610°C. Even though alloying with lead lowers the vapor pressure, fumes containing arsenic are evolved at a very noticeable rate when lead-arsenic alloys are heated above 650°C. Tellurium raises the liquidus temperature of lead sharply to 904°C,14 the melting point of PbTe (lead-telluride). The solid solubility of tellurium in lead was determined by Greenwood and worner15 to be 0.0007 at. pct at room temperature. ALTHOUGH the nomenclature of the chemical tools of flotation is probably familiar to you, it will do no harm to review it; . In order to make the terms more real I have employed an illustration which likens flotation to an old-fashioned balloon ascension, such as we witnessed in boyhood at the county fair. The mineral to be floated is the aeronaut, conspicuous in his gilt-spangled tights, who is to be separated from you and me and the other small boys who are standing about, said boys being the g-a-n-g-u-e, or g-a-n-g, as we would have spelled it. The oil film surrounding the bubble is the counterpart of the silken fabric of the balloon, and bubble and balloon will rise for. the same reason, namely. that the fluid outside it is heavier than the fluid within. In flotation reagent nomenclature the material of which the bubble is made is called the "frother.",

THE Tom Reed Extension and Big Jim mines of United Eastern Mining Co. are situated in the Oatman district, Mohave County, Ariz., about 28 miles southwest of Kingman, the nearest railway point. Articles descriptive of the mine surface plant, mill construction, and plant operations have been written by Otto Wartenweiler1, the designing engineer; Wheeler 0. North,2 when he was assistant general manager for the company, and Earle M. Bagley, mill superintendent.3 The last article covers average costs for the full time the mill was operated. The geology of the mines is described by F. L. Ransome4 of the United States Geological Survey. Production was started in January,. 1917, and the known orebodies were exhausted in May, 1925, showing a life of seven years and five months. On account of the comparatively short life and the fact that stoping operations were confined to two orebodies, little experimenting was done with mining methods. The two orebodies were in what is generally called the Tom Reed-United Eastern vein, which occupies a fault fissure having a normal displacement of several hundred feet. Seven or eight very productive ore shoots were mined along this vein in a distance of 1 ½ miles, the two worked by the United Eastern being 1 mile apart. The maximum dimensions of the Tom Reed Extension ore shoot were height, 750. ft.; length, 950 ft.; thickness, 48 ft. The vein structure varied from a solid quartz-calcite filling to a series of parallel stringers separated by andesite. From this body, 511,976 tons of ore were mined. (Fig. 1.)

THE preparation and general properties of mag-nesium-lithium base alloys have been described in earlier papers.l,2 Lithium forms solid solutions with pure magnesium, lowers its density, and improves its formability. The improved isotropy and better formability of these alloys are attributed to the ability of lithium to convert the magnesium lattice from hexagonal (alpha phase) to body-centered-cubic (beta phase) structure. This change in structure is, however, accompanied by some limitations which make it difficult, if not impossible, to combine all the desirable properties in one composition. The most important of these limitations is the tendency of the high-strength alloys to overage and lose strength at temperatures of the order of 150" to 200°F. A study was made of the effects of composition and heat treatment on the age-hardening character- istics of the alloys. Stability of properties was determined by hardness and tensile testing of the alloys at room temperature after various periods of exposure to elevated temperatures. Precipitation-hardening curves are shown for a number of magnesium-lithium-zinc alloys in fig. 1. All the alloys were solution treated at 700°F and aged at 200°F. The reason for using the drastic quench, toluene at —105°F, was to reduce the rapid precipitation of the hardening phase which takes place at room temperature. Previous experience has shown that a hardness of about 90 to 95 Rockwell E is indicative of yield strengths in the range of 35,000 to 40,000 psi. This is a desirable strength level for magnesium-lithium base alloys with specific gravities of the order of 1.65 or less. Although the hardness level is raised by large zinc contents, a corresponding decrease in the cold formability of these alloys occurs with increasing zinc content. Thus, alloys containing up to about 10 pct Zn and having hardnesses of the order of 70 to 75 Rockwell E may be bent over a very small radius; however, the 16 pct Zn alloy requires a bend radius of more than 8T. The hardness relationships illustrated in fig. 1 can be explained by the partial phase diagram shown in fig. 2. The zinc-free magnesium-lithium alloys are entirely body-centered cubic (100 pct beta phase) when the lithium content of the binary is 10.3 pct or higher. When zinc is added, the boundary between the beta and alpha-plus-beta fields at 700°F is shifted to lower lithium contents. In addition, the solubility of zinc at 700°F decreases with decreasing lithium content. It is shown by a study of micro-structures that the limit of solid solubility of zinc in the 6Mg/Li* matrix at 700°F is about 19 pct. It is believed from a study of the aging curves that this limit is about 2 to 3 pct at 200°F. Zinc additions up to about 2 pct increase the hardness and strength of the magnesium-lithium base solid solution. Larger additions of zinc effect further hardness increases, but precipitate during prolonged aging at 200°F. Alloys having 14 to 20 pct Zn precipitation harden extremely rapidly during quenching, even when quenched in toluene at —105° F. The high-zinc alloys overage at 200°F but are capable of maintaining reasonably high hardnesses for periods up to 1000 hr.

An analysis of heal conduction in the freezing of a solution has been performed. The case considered is the semi-infinite mass of solution, bounded by a con-stant-temperature plane with one-dimensional heat flow, Numerical cooling rate and freezing rate distributions hare been calcutated for the particular case of unidirectional freezing of aqueous solutions against. a cold copper chill. The solution at each level parallel to the chill surface is subjected to a spectra of frcezing rates; the freezing rate is inilially lour., passes through a maximum, and then decreases until solidification is camplete. Arange and maximum freeeing rates are inversely proportional to the square of distance from the chill surface. The temperature of the chill surface in contact with the solution remains constant during solidification. Experimentally, it is observed that deudrite sparing increases linearly with distance from the chill surface; in the light of heat -flow analysis this means that the dendrile spacing is imersely proportional to the square root of the maximum freezing rate. SOLIDIFICATION of liquids is accompanied by rejection of latent heat at the solid-liquid interface. The over-all rate of liquid to solid transformation is governed by the rate of heat extraction. Analysis of the heat transfer in the liquid during freezing is important since it determines the freezing rate and resulting structure. A considerable amount of work has been done on metallic systems since solidification is frequently a major step in processing metals. Unidirectional freezing from heat sinks has been treated by several investigators.1-4 Much of the work has been limited to the simpler case of substances such as pure metals which freeze isothermally at a unique transformation temperature. In this case the thickness of the solid zone y, next to a chill surface. is a parabolic function of the time. 8. where a and b are constants. Eq. |1| is a close approximation giving the progress of solidification for the case in which there is a small but finite thermal contact resistance at the interface between the freezing liquid and the chill.' It has been used with some success in connection with large steel ingots4 when the therma1 contact resistance is negligibly small (as is the case when water is brought into contact with the metal chill). The constant, b. becomes zero and Eq. [l] is then exact. even when the thermal properties of the chill and the freezing liquid depend on temperature. Analysis of unidirectional solidification of solutions is more complicated since the latent heat is evolved over a range of temperatures. Next to the all-solid zone in contact with the chill surface there is a solid plus liquid zone in which solidification takes place. Although the equations presented are considered quite general the numerical and experimental results are for freezing of aqueous solutions from a copper chill. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Solutions of potassium chloride, sodium chloride. and lithium chloride have been used. These solutions form a eutectic: a typical phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1. A solution at its liquid us temperature is poured into a tygon tube mounted on a relatively large copper chill. The chill is immersed in a freezing mixture of dry ice and acetone at -70°C. A thermocouple connected to a high-speed recorder was mounted near the top of the chill to measure the fluctuation in the temperature of chill surface in contact with the solution. In this system the progress of solidification can be visually observed through the tygon tube. After the specimens freeze to a desired height they are removed from the copper chill and stripped from the tygon tube. Longitudinal and transverse sections are cut from the specimen for micrographic examination. Specimens in the form of a thin slice are mounted on a transparent glass slide by freezing small drops of water around the periphery. Measurements of grain boundary sliding were made on polycrystal and bicrystal tensile creep specimens of Al-2 pct Mg at 500oand 700oF. Grain and pain boundary orientation factors were studied with respect to their effect on the magnitude and direction of grain boundary sliding. It was concluded that a large part of the observed sliding may be caused by the operation of slip crossing the grain boundaries. Supporting evidence for this model from other investigations is also given. GRAIN boundary sliding in metals during elevated temperature deformation has frequently been thought of as an independent mechanism with its own characteristic stress, temperature, and structure dependence. Further, it is common to regard the grain boundary as the weak link during creep deformation since: 1) the strength of apolycrystallinemetal, as meas-sured by creep rate or rupture life, decreases at\a more rapid rate when sliding comes into action, and 2) grain boundary sliding, as revealed by "boundary darkening" and fold formation is often the first visible deformation. On the other hand, more quantitative observations, in both polycrystals and bicrystals, have shown boundary deformation to be closely related to the over-all deformation of the specimen. The curve of grain boundary contribution to elongation vs time takes a shape similar to that of the total creep curve,',' and the apparent activation energy for sliding appears in most cases to have the same value as that for total creep.3 In order to reconcile these observations, one is left with these possibilities: 1) The grain boundary and grain deformation rates are both controlled by the same rate limiting processes. 2) The rate of sliding is limited by accommodation deformation in the grains. 3) Sliding is the consequence of grain deformation. 4) Grain deformation is dependent on prior grain boundary deformation. Alternatives 2) and 3) would view grain boundary sliding as occurring in series with another deformation process which could be rate controlling. McLean prefers item 3) as the sliding basis,4 where subgrain rotation results from dislocation accumulation in the substructure at the grain boundary. Crussard and Friedel's5 treatment of grain boundary migration considers that dislocations are forced into the grain boundary and are dissociated into dislocations with Burgers' vectors nearly parallel to the grain boundary. The movement of these partial grain boundary dislocations then produces the sliding. The results of this investigation have indicated alternative 3) to be the most appropriate and it is this aspect of grain boundary sliding which will be analyzed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Three types of tensile creep tests were employed in this study: (I) A constant load test of one very coarsegrained polycrystalline specimen at 500° F, 3600 psi, 1 pct per/hr strain rate to examine the grain and grain boundary orientation factors in grain boundary sliding. (II) Constant strain rate tests of polycrystalline specimens at 510o and 715o F, 2 pct per/hr strain rate to determine the grain boundary contribution to elongation at very low total strains. (m) Constant strain rate tests of bicrystals of various grain and grain boundary orientations at 500°F, 2 pct per/hr strain rate to obtain further information on the orientation effects in grain boundary sliding. The material used in the tests was a high-purity Al-1'.92 mg alloy, kindly furnished by Alcoa. Its composition is given in Table I. The alloy is a solid solution at the test temperatures. The coarse grained polycrystalline specimen for test (I) was prepared by recrystallizingthe machined specimen, straining it about 1pct intension at room temperature and annealing at 900°F for 8hr. The constant strain rate specimens (11), with an 178 in. sq. by 1/2 in. long gage section, were cut from 1/8 in. thick sheet of cold rolled and annealed (8 hr at 1000oF) material. The latter specimens were supported in a special jig during the milling operations to avoid any bending, and the gage section was subsequently heavily electropolished to remove the cold-worked surface layer. THE revision of this chapter has presented a problem in that heavy-medium jigging has come into the picture since the chapter was originally written (seven years ago), a practice in which an artificial medium is built up and maintained in the jig circuit. As this development makes the jig a "true" heavy-medium process, the method belongs in the chapter dealing with such processes. Although putting this development in its proper position in the book involves some repetition, this seems to be the best procedure, and it has been followed. As the chapter on jigs in its original form was intended to be more or less a handbook on jigging for the use of the practical man, and the great bulk of the material therein is still generally applicable, the text has been re-used in large measure. Two major changes should be noted: (1) the portion of the text relating to the refuse-withdrawing mechanism of the McNally-Pittsburg jig has been entirely rewritten, and (2) a description of the hutch valves on the Jeffrey jigs has been added. Jigging is the stratification of a mass of solid particles in upward and downward pulsations. The stratification usually is effected in a rectangular open-top container having a perforated bottom through which the pulsations of water are applied to the materials to be separated; in separating coal, to a mass of coal and refuse. Jigging usually is a continuous process involving three steps: (1) the reception of the raw coal, (2) the stratification of the coal and refuse so that the refuse settles to the screen plate, and (3) the overflow of the cleaned coal and the withdrawal of the refuse collected on the screen. The jig is the most universal washer ever devised. It is handling in practice a wide range of closely sized coals and ores, mixed sizes of coal from 8-in. to 0 through 3/4-in. to 0, and mixed sizes of ores down to 7/32-in. to 0and even smaller. It is treating materials ranging in specific gravity from that of gold at 19 to that of coal at 1.30. It is handling feeds in which the proportions of high-gravity materials range from 90 per cent or higher, as for some iron ores, to 10 per cent or less for some coals. It is handling feeds containing all shapes of particles-round, rectangular, and flat. It is handling simple separation problems and difficult separation problems.

YOU can place an exclamation point after the "and How" if you want to, but the way it stands it sum¬marizes the Mining Geology sessions quite nicely; "Why" in the morning, "How" in the afternoon. It is altogether fitting that Prof. McLaughlin and Reno Sales, who have themselves achieved enviable reputations in company work, should have led the program by presenting informally a chapter from the volume dedicated to the beloved dean of all economic geologists, Waldemar Lindgren. In opening the morning session, over which Sydney Ball presided, Donald McLaughlin emphasized the continuous role mining geology should play in operating technique. He pointed out the importance of structural relations in a broad sense, and the preponderant role they play in developing the manner of ore occurrences. He illustrated this by an account of the work at Homestake, using slides to show the stratigraphic sequence, the folding, and the orebodies of that camp. An interesting piece of detail was the distinction they found could be made be¬tween the chlorite near the ore masses, and that in the country rocks. Whether the cummingtonite, characteristic of the rock in which the ore is found, is of regional or of contact metamorphic origin caused some discussion. Dr. Lindgren inclined to the belief that it was contact, but L. C. Graton replied that they had found the weight of evidence was for a hydrothermal origin. D. F. Hewett raised the question as to whether, in the advancing development of the mining industry, there was still a place for the U. S. Survey geologist, and the consensus seemed to be that there should be. His role is changing from that of mapping mining districts in detail, now the task of the companies, towards a more general serving of the industry through the wider perspective his work gives him in contradistinction to the greater detail of knowledge accumulated by the resident geologist.
