Wellbore stability is a major concern for drilling in naturally fractured formations. The infiltration of drilling mud into the fractures is a factor, which may compromise wellbore integrity due to the loss of strength experienced by the fractures. The reduction in the fracture frictional and cohesive properties is attributed to weakening of the infill materials and lubrication of fracture asperities by the mud filtrate. One way to investigate the influence of mud infiltration on wellbore stability in fractured formations is to use a numerical modeling approach. A requirement for the numerical model is the ability to predict the region of mud infiltration. This paper describes a numerical technique to model the extent of mud infiltration for application in coupled fluid-mechanical simulations in densely fractured rock masses using the computer code, UDEC. Several factors are considered including fracture pattern, in-situ stresses, reduction in joint frictional angle and cohesion, viscosity of the mud filtrate and fracture plugging. Results of numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the technique and show the influence of these factors on the extent of mud infiltration. Un des problèmes importants posés par le forage en milieu fissuré saturé, est celui du maintient de la stabilité du puit. L’infiltration de boue de forage dans le massif peut avoir pour effet de réduire les propriétés frictionnelles et cohésives des fractures et de compromettre ainsi la stabilité du puit de forage. Le radoucissement des propriétés des fractures est attribué à la dégradation du materiau de remplissage et au pouvoir lubrifiant des boues. L’analyse numérique offre un moyen d’investiguer l’influence jouée par l’infiltration de boue sur la stabilité du puit. Un des critères de sélection du modèle numérique sera son pouvoir de prédiction du domaine d’infiltration de boue. Cet article décrit une technique numérique permettant de modéliser l’infiltration de boue de forage dans le cadre de simulations hydro-mécaniques, en milieu à haute densité de fractures, effectuées avec le logiciel de calcul UDEC. Parmis les facteurs tenus en compte, on trouvera la nature du réseau de fractures, les contraintes in-situ, le radoucissement en friction et cohésion des joints, la viscosité de la boue et le bourrage des fractures. Des résultats de simulations sont présentés pour illustrer la technique et montrer l’influence de ces facteurs sur la taille du domaine d’infiltration de boue. "INTRODUCTION The first paper of this series contained data concerning the behavior of polyhalite (K2S04.MgS04.2CaS04.2H20) upon calcination and subsequent leaching with water at 100° C. It was found that upon heating polyhalite to temperatures between 298 and 500° C. the water of crystallization is driven off, leaving, an amorphous mixture of K2S04, MgS04, and CaS04. Two transition points were located; one at 298° C. which coincides with the vigorous evolution of steam; and one at 551° C. which results in the formation of a hard mass of crystals. The latter probably consist of a solid solution If the compounds langbeinite (K2504, 2MgS04), potassium dicalcium sulphate (K2304. 2CaS04), and anhydrite (CaS04). The heat of decomposition of polyhalite at 298° C. was measured and found to be 66,000 ± 5,000 calories per mol. The optimum temperature of calcination with regard to subsequent extrac¬tion with two parts of water (at "" 0° C.) is 430 to 450° C. for 65 to 100 mesh material, if one half hour at the calcination temperature is allowed. The maximum concentration of K2S04 obtainable in the extraction of calcined polyhalite is 11.4 grams per 100 grams of water. This concentration of K2304 is considerably above the equilibrium value (3.6 g. per 100 L. of H20 at 83° C.) with respect to the solid phases polyhalite, potassium calcium pentasulphate, ¬and anhydrite. The figure 11.4 K. of K2804 per 100 g. of H20 is also somewhat than the equilibrium value (9,65 g. per 100 g, H20) with respect to the solid phases potassium calcium pentasulphate and syngenite."

Construction of foundations for the Skyway Segment of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge required innovative techniques due to the mass of the structures being inserted and the unique subsurface of the Bay. Twenty of the pier structures required large sheet pile cofferdams. Eight other foundations were installed in open water without cofferdams at the deeper part of the Bay. This narrative will present the initial planning, as well as the stages of installation, for each type of foundation. The first section will discuss foundation constructability modifications made during the initial planning phases of the project. Considerable effort was expended by Caltrans, the owner, T.Y. Lin the designer, and KFM (Kiewit/FCI/Manson) the contractor in modifying the design to assure that required tolerance would be maintained during the installation of the foundations. The final section will describe the steps required for installation including: initial access dredging, installation of cofferdams, preparation required to install the footing boxes, footing box installation, foundation support pile installation, and pile to box connections.

7253. Arkhangelsky, A. D. Geological Results of the General Magnetometric and Gravimetric Surveys of the U.S.S.R. (in Russian). Internat. Geol. Cong., Rep. of the 17th Sess., Moscow-Leningrad, 1937, vol. 1, Moscow, 1939, pp. 241-250. Geophysical methods have been used in the U.S.S.R. to study geological problems. Such is the case of the general magnetometric and gravimetric surveys made jointly by the Main Physical Observatory, Main Office of Geodesy and Cartography, Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, and Main Office of Geophysical Prospecting. Some institutions supplied the data, others processed them. Geological interpretation was made by the author. (1) Regional magnetic anomalies in the plains of the U.S.S.R. are traceable to the folded substratum overlain by sedimentary rocks; these anomalies promise to yield data characterizing the substratum in respect to strike and depth. Anomalies in European U.S.S.R. suggest that the pre-Cambrian -substratum of the East European plateau consists of elements of different ages. In the most ancient of them, the main strike of the folding is almost latitudinal; in the younger ones, the folding is oriented in the meridian. (2) The Faye and Bouguer gravity anomalies are caused primarily by differences in the density of rocks composing the upper crust and by unknown processes producing changes of density at depth; these processes are not connected with isosiatic movements. The anomalies in the European and adjoining Asiatic U.S.S.R. promise to indicate the volume of the pre-Cambrian massif of the east-European plateau and to clarify the interrelations between the Ural, Tian-Shan, and Donetz Basin folding systems, as well as between the Dnieper-Donetz depression and the mid-European depression. - V. "The purpose of the project is to convert current shuttle car utilization on an underground coal mine to best practice by focusing on change-out points and tramming routes, which have a major influence on shuttle car away times. Time studies were an integral part of the project as these enabled the determination of shuttle car away times. An indirect proportional relationship between shuttle car away times and productivity is established. Through the time studies, it is deduced that a third shuttle car will make an insignificant contribution to production when there is only one split open. During this time, maintenance on the third car can be optimized. In order to satisfy the mine’s key performance indicator of keeping shuttle car away times less than 75 seconds, a belt extension must be scheduled after the third split is open. It is established that at any given time, a minimum of two shuttle cars should be used. When cutting on the left-hand-side of the belt road with only two shuttle cars available, the centre and left (left of the feeder breaker) shuttle cars should be used for coal hauling. When cutting on the right-hand-side, the centre and the right-hand-side cars should be used. If only one shuttle car is available, the centre car is the most efficient to use. Alternative anchoring configurations can be employed so as to enable cars (left or right, especially) to reach the opposite extremities of the panel and hence minimize cable length restrictions. The Greater Vancouver Water District (GVWD) is currently constructing the largest water treatment plant in Canada. As part of this treatment scheme twin water transfer tunnels are being constructed. Work commenced with the 11 m diameter, 185 m deep Seymour Shaft which was excavated by drill and blast using a mobile crane for hoisting. The Seymour Shaft is the first large diameter shaft that has been sunk in Western Canada in recent years. The operational aspects associated with the hoisting, the drill-blast-support cycle and water control in the shaft are the focus of this paper.

An experimental evaluation of a selective agglomeration process in which an agglomerated coal rich phase was produced as a result of mixing light oil to various raw coal slurries is described. The beneficiation achieved by this method is compared to that obtained bv conventional froth flotation. The results suggest' that oil agglomeration is a more selective process than froth flotation and is less sensitive to variations in feed pulp density. Selective agglomeration has the additional advantage of producing a low moisture content product. The effect of replacing flotation filter cake with an equivalent amount of selectively agglomerated product in coke-making was studied with the aid of a pilot-scale coke oven. The results suggest that the principal effect of such a measure is to increase the bulk density of the charge.

This paper presents a heat conduction model to determine the erosion profile of freeze linings in a ferronickel submerged arc furnace. Kirchhoff transformation was adopted to simplify the nonlinear equation governing heat conduction. The boundary element method (BEM) and Nelder-Mead simplex optimization method were employed to solve an inverse heat conduction problem. Erosion profiles could be obtained when calculated temperatures at sensor locations agreed well with measured temperatures. The model was validated by comparing the heat loss through the linings, which was calculated by BEM and integral operation after erosion profiles were obtained, with the value calculated from industrial data such as actual power consumption, tap-to-tap time, and ferronickel output. The optimal solution for the erosion profile could be acquired when the difference in heat losses calculated by these two methods is at a minimum.

"The Eglinton Crosstown Line was conceived as the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, a partially underground light rail line, announced in 2007 as part of the Transit City plan, which included the implementation of six other light rail lines across Toronto.There were 43 stops planned for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, 13 of which would be underground . For those underground stations a lot of specialty foundation works needed to be carried out. King piles, soldier piles with lagging and secant piles were mainly required fulfilling the tasks of installing the retaining wall system.The paper will focus on the original design and alternative solutions, discussing the benefits and limits of these. It will also explain the installation process in general as well as some specific features related to specific site conditions, e.g. limits in installation depth, soil characteristics etc. The required equipment will be explained showing the benefits and limits.INTRODUCTIONThe Eglinton Crosstown project is a 19-kilometre LRT line that will bring much needed relief to the transit woes of Torontonians. Traversing the city in an east-west slice across the midtown artery of Eglinton Avenue, the Crosstown rail line involves a combination of 15 underground stations and 10 atgrade surface stops. It is one of the largest transit infrastructure projects under way in North America today. Aecon has joined partners ACS Infrastructure Canada, Ellis Don, and SNC-Lavalin to form Crosslinx Transit Solutions (Crosslinx).As with many of today’s mega public transportation projects, the Crosstown LRT follows the Public- Private Partnership (P3) model. Aecon is an equal partner in the $5.3-billion Crosslinx consortium to develop the Eglinton Crosstown LRT project in Toronto. Upon the LRT's completion in 2021, Metrolinx, the region’s transit authority and also the project client/owner, will turn to the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to operate it. The impact of this highly anticipated LRT line on commuters in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is expected to be dramatic and immediate once the first train leaves the station five years from now. In fact, Metrolinx is estimating that within its first 10 years of service, the Crosstown line will be carrying 5,500 passengers per hour (in peak direction) and making 100 million passenger trips annually."

The Hiddenite District of Alexander County, NC has produced some of the world?s finest large emeralds since the first one was discovered 134 years ago. In fact, North America?s largest emeralds come from the district, making this one of the continent?s most unique gem deposits. In addition to emeralds, the Hiddenite District is also famous as the discovery site for the rare spodumene mineral hiddenite, first identified in 1881. Nowhere else in the world do these two minerals naturally occur together. The emeralds are a unique color variety of beryl (Al2Be3Si6O18) with trace amounts of Cr+3 and V+3 substituting for Al+3. The hiddenite (LiAlSi2O6) crystals also exhibit emerald green color due to traces of chromium. Consisting of three large deposits and numerous prospects, the district encompasses an area of 10 km2 (4 sq miles) centered on the small town of Hiddenite. Operations at the Adams, Ellis and North American Emerald Mines properties have been productive at irregular intervals since the 1880s. Currently, only the North American Emerald Mines property is being mined on a regular basis. Recent activity there has exposed a 3-hm2 (7.4-acre) pit with depths of 25 m (82 ft) that provides the best exposures of unweathered bedrock seen in the district in more than 120 years. Although no official records exist, public and private data indicate that the production of the entire Hiddenite District from 1880 to 2007 is about 70,000 carats of emerald and 20,000 carats of hiddenite. The bulk of the emeralds came from the North American Emerald Mine property (NAEM, formerly known as the Rist Mine) where sustained mining replaced the previous sporadic prospecting in 2000.

It is indeed a rarity for a non-engineer, let alone a lawyer, to even be considered for a mining-related award, especially where that award is for significant contributions to technical progress in the mining and exploration sectors. So, when I was notified that I had received this award, I struggled for a topic that would meld the legal world that I operate in with the engineering driven world of exploration and extraction. The most exciting part of my job has always been the opportunity to absorb the technical details of the cases I work on and, in effect, translate them for a lay audience. Too often, I have found, lawyers, judges, legislators and yes, even regulators who lack a technical background simply give up trying to understand the details of the very conditions or processes that they are trying to describe and simply repeat phrases told to them by their client or by a retained expert.

"INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the ALSANDS PROJECT, with emphasis on the approach taken in the design of the Primary Extraction and Froth Treatment Plants.The Alsands Consortium (Table 1) is a Joint Venture of 9 companies formed in 1978, with its prime objective to obtain governmental approval and concomitant suitable commercial terms to build and operate a third oil sands mining and upgrading facility in the Athabasca Oil Sands Deposit.Alsands Energy Limited is the Consortium Manager.The Alsands Project will provide about 10 percent of Canada's forecast crude oil production by 1990, which will be 20,700 cubic metres per day (130,000 barrels/day) of synthetic crude oil plus 1,100 cubic metres per day (7,000 barrels/day) of liquid petroleum gases. To construct Alsands the time required by construction labour, field non-manual and engineering support personnel as well as those trades involved in project-related urban development will total approximately 100,000,000 manhours or 50,000 man years. During regular operations, 4,800 people will be employed by Alsands.Approximately $13 billion will be spent to design, construct and start up the plant by the scheduled 1988 completion date."

O trabalho teve por objetivo produzir uma liga Al AA1070 com granulometria fina a partir de um material com granulometria grosseira, por meio de deformação plástica severa (DPS) aplicada por prensagem por canais equiangulares (ECAP) via rota C, bem como esclarecer e avaliar os mecanismos responsáveis pela evolução microestrutural durante este processo de prensagem. O processo empregou a rota C com 5 passes consecutivos a frio e acumulou uma deformação ?5 = 5,95. O material de partida é proveniente de um processo de laminação a quente, com uma microestrutura de grãos grosseiros com tamanho de grão de 16 ± 18 µm. Foi realizada a caracterização microestrutural com o auxílio das técnicas de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e de difração de elétrons retroespalhados. O refinamento microestrutural foi realizado eficientemente alcançando uma microestrutura fina, observou-se uma redução de 80% alcançando um tamanho de grão de 3,38 µm, e um aumento da fração de contornos de alto ângulo passando de 23% a 46%. A partir dos resultados obtidos nas análises conclui-se que os mecanismos responsáveis pela evolução microestrutural foram os processos de subdivisão por meio de fragmentação e rotação de grãos, recuperação e recristalização dinâmica.

The year 1979 was a period of increased activity for the world's mineral industry, distinctly in contrast with 1978 when estimated world crude mineral output value declined slightly and most phases of the industry's activity were somewhat curtailed. In 1979, most major mineral commodities recorded significant gains in output, with a substantial number achieving new record highs; details on trade levels for 1979 were not available, but increases over those of 1978 were expected on the basis of partial data. Consumption of most commodities edged higher; in some cases the higher demand levels were met largely through draw-downs of stocks accumulated in recent years, while in other cases notable output increases were required to meet demand. Actually, 1978 was not a bad year for all elements of the mineral industry if changes in output levels of the various commodities are considered as a measure of performance. There were far more individual commodities registering production increases between 1977 and 1978 than registered declines, but some of those reported as declining were relatively major commodities (bauxite, aluminum, copper and zinc were notable), Moreover, the upturn in productive activity in 1978 was not matched by increases in profits. However, 1979 was unquestionably a year of renewed expansion efforts, although some commodity areas, most notably the steel industry component, were still experiencing difficulties.

Slag samples taken from adjacent to the furnace wall of a submerged arc ferromanganese smelting furnace have been found to contain high concentrations of K2O. To characterize the phase equilibria relevant to these slags experimental studies have been carried out to determine pseudo-ternary sections of the form ?MnO?-CaO-(SiO2+Al2O3) with a fixed Al2O3/SiO2 weight ratio of 0.65 and 6.0 wt% K2O for temperatures in the range 1523-1673 K. In the pseudo-ternary section investigated the primary phase fields are found to be mullite, 3Al2O3?2SiO2; corundum, Al2O3; spinel, MnO?Al2O3; manganosite solid solution, (Mn,Ca)O; dicalcium silicate,2CaO?SiO2; gehlenite 2CaO?Al2O3?SiO2; anorthite CaO?Al2O3?2SiO2; kalsilite KAlSiO4 and leuciteKAlSi2O6. It was found that the presence of K2O in the slag decreases liquidus temperature in the anorthite and gehlenite primary phase fields. The manganosite primary phase field is expanded in the direction of increased (Al2O3+SiO2) and the liquidus temperatures in the manganosite primary phase field are increased significantly with the presence of K2O in the slag.

Tensile tests were conducted on pure magnesium and on four commercial alloys over a variety of temperatures and strain rates. The high positive slope of the ductility vs testing temperature curves that is found over a short range of testing temperatures for these materaturerials was shown to result from the fact that the microstructure was not stable at these testing temperatures. Pure magnesium did not display a transition temperature, although its sub-room temperature ductility was low. This poor ductility resulted from a grain boundary weakness. The aluminum-bearing commercial magnesium alloys had a higher ductility than the pure magnesium. ness.Thealuminum-bearingcommercialThese alloys did exhibit a transition temperature and grain boundaries that were stronger than the grain material. Both pure magnesium and the commercial alloys began initiating cracks at strains equal to one half of their fracture strain. MAGNESIUM base alloys' enormous potential as structural materials lies in their high strength to weight ratios. At present, the high strength magnesium base alloys such as AZ-80, which will be discussed later, have about as high a tensile strength to specific gravity ratio as the highest strength wrought aluminum alloy, 75s-T6, and, of course, a much higher strength to weight ratio than structural steel. Further, since the magnesium base alloys develop their high strength to weight ratios with moderate strengths and extremely light weights, the ratio of load carrying capacity to the weight of many structures is relatively higher for the magnesium base alloys than their strength to weight ratios would indicate. This results because judicious increases in section size, such as increasing the depth of bending members or adding reinforcing ribs, can frequently increase the weight of a structure linearly while the strength and stiffness increase as the second or third power of the added weight. Strength and rigidity must be designed into lightweight structures by those techniques which establish multiaxial stress states. Consequently, strong, lightweight structures frequently also possess a greater propensity toward brittle failures. In order to insure against these catastrophic failures, an extra premium must be placed on ductility and toughness in light alloys. Current knowledge of the ductility and toughness behaviors—notched behaviors—of magnesium base alloys is limited.* Most of the magnesium base alloys * The state of present knowledge regarding the effect of testing temperature on mechanical properties has recently been summar-ized by Pritchard.' crystallize in the hexagonal system, so that they are expected to exhibit a tough and ductile to brittle transition temperature. Actually, a transition temperature behavior has been reported for commercially pure magnesium in the literature, but the characteristics of this transition temperatureh uggest that it may not be a transition in the usual meaning, but simply the onset of some thermal softening, a performance much like that which face-centered-cubic lead might exhibit slightly below room temperature. If transition temperatures do exist, such important questions as the manner in which they are affected by internal variables such as chemical composition and grain size, or the effect of external variables such as rate of straining or notch severity have never been investigated. The investigation reported upon herein was undertaken in order to define some of the mechanical behaviors of the magnesium base alloys better, to gain a better understanding of the influence of some of the above listed variables, and particularly to understand their effect on ductility and toughness better. This article analyzes the social acceptability process of a mining project located in an existing city. It will explore how the principles of sustainable development have been integrated in the project of the Canadian Malartic open pit mine held by the Osisko Mining Corporation, and the corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives proposed to strengthen the social acceptability of the project. This mine is located on the ancient south quarter of Malartic and has required the displacement of hundred of houses and five institutions. The location and the inherent social impacts generated by the relocation of the citizens of the south quarter makes this case particularly interesting to understand social dynamics in an era of environmental consciousness. These major constraints of the mine generate high expectations within the urban population with regard to the social and economic benefits it will receive from the project. In a context where society demands higher CSR from the corporation, Osisko is closely followed regarding their actions toward the sustainable development principles to see if they respect the environment and the desires of the community. From the beginning, the company had to be a model of sustainable development in various aspects reflected by the manifold interest of the population. To understand the endeavor made by the company to fulfill the demand of CSR, we will analyze how the company understood sustainable development principles and what CSR initiatives Osisko company put forward. We will explore the involvement of the company in various social aspects like employment, employee satisfaction, and the level of commitment to non-discrimination policy in employment, notably with the native populations. We will also take a closer look at the relationship built by the company with the community and the level of commitment with the various stakeholders of the community. In this way, we will be able to seize the level of involvement of the company in the fulfillment of the principles of sustainable development toward a higher CSR, and to specify the trajectory adopted to build social acceptance.

As ore deposits become finer grained the requirements for regrinding before cleaning or leaching have increased substantially. Despite this increasing need, there is no standard test to predict grinding energy requirement below 70 microns. The standard Bond Mill test applies for coarser ball milling, but is not appropriate for stirred milling with fine media grinding to 70 microns. With no industry -standard test, the energy requirement is often made on the basis of supplier estimates or benchmarking against similar applications. Yet suppliers use vastly different scale-up methods which result in widely different energy estimates. Estimates can differ by 100-300% even for similar mills. This must result in serious errors to install either too much or too little grinding power. This paper explores this by comparing the actual performance of full scale regrind mills against their original design estimate. It confirms that serious scale-up errors have been made, and have then been perpetuated by ?benchmarking?. The test conditions to achieve accurate power estimation are discussed. The essential test conditions are: continuous (not batch) tests, ensure steady state (no coarse fraction retained in test mill), correctly account for classification, measure energy directly (not inferred), and using the same media size as the full scale installation. Failure to correctly address even one of these factors can bias results by 40%; failure to address several multiplies the error.
