The purpose of this project was to compare two underground, batch coal haulers ? battery haulers and shuttle cars ? in order to determine the more viable machine to implement. The specific standards for battery haulers were investigated and compared to the requirements of shuttle cars in order to identify the unnecessary expenses related to the legal requirements that are attached to the machines. Costs such as running costs, capital costs, and maintenance costs were researched and compared over a typical life of machine. Average production rates and breakdown times were obtained and used to determine which machine would be more reliable in achieving the required annual production.

JX Nippon Mining and Metals Corporation has developed the JX Iodine Process, which is an innovative and patented copper-leaching process for low-grade primary sulfide ores. This process consists of the irrigation of ferric iron and a low concentration of iodide solutions. One-meter column leaching tests were conducted on ore samples from two different mines. At the end of experiments, the total copper recovery exceeded 70% for Sample A and 50% for Sample B with the iodine method, which was significantly higher than that with conventional ferric leaching of 14% for Sample A and 20% for Sample B. To elucidate the reason for the JX Iodine Process effectiveness, cross sections of leached residues were studied. Reaction products were confirmed around chalcopyrite even in the central area of particles in Sample A, however, reaction products were recognized at a depth of only 1 mm from the ore rim in Sample The resistance of Sample A to the leachate appeared to be lower than that of Sample B because Sample A had a high permeability and porosity, whereas Sample B had been affected strongly by a potassium alteration. No reaction products were visible on conventional leaching samples, even at the ore surfaces. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical copper leaching (heap leaching or dump leaching) has been used extensively for copper recovery from oxide and secondary-sulfide ores, but not for primary copper sulfides, which contain mainly chalcopyrite as copper minerals. Although they are major resources of copper, primary copper sulfides are difficult to process because of their refractory nature. Extensive leaching studies have been carried out to leach primary copper sulfides (chalcopyrite), including biological and chemical, using a variety of oxidants and additives to enhance copper recovery. Watling (2013) reviewed acid-chloride-oxidizing agents with chalcopyrite. Abdollahi et al. (2015) tested silver as a catalyst for bioleaching with a chalcopyrite-bearing molybdenite concentrate. Hiroyoshi, Miki, Hirajima and Tsunekawa (2000) found a specific redox-potential zone for high-speed chalcopyrite leaching by controlling the ratio of ferric and ferrous iron. However, no ambient-temperature economic process has been developed for leaching primary copper sulfide, which usually has a low copper grade.

"This paper contains a comparison of creep-feed and shallow-cut grinding on ceramics with both neat oil and water-based grinding fluids. When a water-based grinding fluid was used in creep-feed grinding on ceramics the vertical forces and specific energies increased markedly fast with result that the wheel surface was damaged seriously. Creep-feed grinding on ceramics with neat oil not only produced much lower grinding forces and specific energies but also resulted in the wheel remaining in good condition and minimizing damage to the ground surface. This finding may lead to a deeper understanding of the behaviors of grinding fluids in grinding processes both on ceramics and metal as well.1. IntroductionAs advanced ceramics are obtaining more and more applications in the technical area, some machining processes are needed after the sintering to reach the accuracy and finish required by components. Because of higher hardness and brittle behaviors of modem ceramic many researches have been done in order to improve grinding efficiency and surface quality.In the grinding metals the concept of creep-feed grinding has been developed in industry as a real alternative to the normal method of shallow-cut grinding. In addition to the general economic advantages, dimensional accuracy and surface integrity are invariable improved using the creep-feed grinding technique.In grinding ceramics former studies have done many works on both creep-feed and shallow-cut grinding on ceramics with water-based grinding fluids since the water-based were thought to be better coolants than neat oil in most tests of grinding metals[l]. It was suggested that the specific grinding energies of ceramics are markedly higher in creep-feed grinding. The grinding force increases vary rapidly with time in the creep-feed case. In other words, so-called speed stroke grinding with high workpiece speed is considered more suitable for improving the grinding efficiency [2][3]."

"Environmental issues such as global warming and water pollution are motivating fast changes in scientific and technological paradigms. Special importance is now being given to the so called environmentally friendly materials, which are renewable, recyclable and biodegradable. An example is the natural fibers with increasing industrial applications beyond the conventional uses as baskets, fabrics, ropes and carpets. In addition to traditional natural fibers, others like curaua (Ananas erectifolius) are being investigated for possible use as reinforcement of industrial composites. Since epoxy matrix is not yet incorporated with curaua fibers, the objective of this paper was to study the basic properties of epoxy composites reinforced with different amounts of curaua waste fibers. A comparative analysis aiming at the use of these composites as substitute for conventional building materials was carried out.IntroductionThis new millennium, which initiates with the 21th century, is experiencing a fast degradation of the environment by pollution and climate changes. Most of the problems are related to our methods of development associated with the use of fossil fuels and the energy intensive processing and production of synthetic materials. One relevant example is the current importance given to natural materials like the lignocellulosic fibers extracted from cultivated plants or found as industrial wastes [1]. The majority of the powerplants in India are fed with non-coking coals, with the coals dispatched from their respective mines via wagons loaded by a rapid loading system or pay loader. The usual top size of coal is 200 mm and sampling is carried out manually from wagons. The manual method of wagon top sampling of large size raw coal is not only difficult, but also violates some of the fundamental principles of sampling. As per sampling requirements, samples are to be drawn from the full depth of the wagons, which is impossible to be done manually. Since the ash distribution in the different size fractions is not homogeneous, the results from the samples, which do not reflect the true size distribution of the lot, are likely to be biased. More importantly, sample collection by shovel from the top is a function of human discretion and not governed by the equiprobability rule. In another case, the sample has been collected by a cross belt-type auto mechanical sampler for 200 mm size coal at one of the super thermal power stations. Test analysis shows that coal collected using a cross belt-type mechanical sampler also has significant deviations from stopped belt coal samples of 200 mm size due to size segregation. Studies carried out on wagon top sampling through specially designed experiments reveal some interesting features. The presence of bias in wagon top sampling is apparent when compared with the ‘stopped belt’ sample. In this paper, a comparative study between manual wagon top sampling/auto mechanical sampling with respect to stopped belt sampling has been conducted for coal of size 200 mm. The effect or various oxidants on gold and silver dissolution in thiourea solutions (0.05 M in H2SO4) was studied using the rotating disc technique, a.t 2s c and 600 rpm. These studies were carried out at constant (4:1) initial molar ratio or thiourea to oxidant concentrations, to produce 50 % thiourea. oxidation. The initial dissolution rate of gold was approximately four times higher in the presence. of ferric sulfate (5.37 x 10-3mg cm-2 s-1) than in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), potassium persultate (K2S2O3), or monopersulfa.te (KHS06). The dissolution rates for silver were considerably lower than gold for the same oxidants. Oxidation of thiourea in the presence of peroxygen and persulta.te compounds is a. fast reaction and it is completed in less than ten minutes. On the other hand, the oxidation or thiourea with? ferric.sulfate is slow, yielding a second-order reaction rate constant k = 6.09 I mol-1 h-1. Sulfur formation in the ferric thiourea system begins when ferric ion reduction approaches to completion. With hydrogen peroxide, sulfur is observed at lower thiourea concentration than ferric. Suifate. The presence of a large excess or free thiourea i.e., s to 20 % thiourea oxidation) retards sulfur formation and maintains favorable dissolution rates. Finally, carbon-in-leach experiments indicate that thiourea solutions a.re stable for several days, with ferric sulfate or hydrogen peroxide. The dissolution rates of gold and silver doubles in the presence or activated carbon when hydrogen peroxide is used as oxidant.

The application of biogeochemical methods in mineral exploration in the semi-arid to and environment of Western Australia was investiga- ted in an area near Norseman. The reliability of these methods was evaluated by comparing trace element characteristics of rock, soil and plants in the vicinity of the Pioneer BB pros- pect. The prospect is located in the south- western part of the Pioneer Dome, where granite gneiss core is surrounded by a 'greenstone' sequence of ultrabasic, basic and sedimentary rocks. Nickel-iron sulphide mineralization occurs discontinuously along one of the basic- ultrabasic contacts. Analyses of unweathered and partly weath- ered rock from diamond drill cores show the ultrabasic rock to be highly variable with re- spect to nickel, copper, cobalt, zinc and manga- nese. Samples of weathered bedrock and over- lying soil were analysed both for total trace element contents and for the trace elements associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides. Approximately 30 per cent of the total nickel content of the weathered basic rock is associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides, compared to approximately 15 per cent in the weathered ultrabasic rock. The soil is partly transported but has a residual component sufficient to provide a reli- able indication of the underlying rock chemistry, although the trace element content of the soil is less variable than that of the rock. Important amounts of nickel, cobalt and, to a lesser extent, copper are apparently associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides in the soil.Melaleuca sheathiana (tea tree) has been used to study the relationship between soil and plant chemistry. No strong relationship between plant and rock type was observed. Analyses were made of leaves, twigs, wood, bark and roots, and all plant organs were found to have anomalous nickel and copper contents near the mineralized zone. Leaves were found to give the best contrast in the anomalous area and to show fewer erratic values than other organs. It is concluded that the uptake of trace elements by tea tree is low in the semi-arid to arid environment of Western Australia, but that analyses of the plants do reflect the presence of mineralization.

The resultant data was compiled to give specific use information on the seven instruments. During the course of the study attempts to evaluate the Griswold Gage were abandoned when it became apparent that the gage was not being commercially produced. One company is developing the gage for its own use. The information presented is the result of over 1200 inquiries.

In order to be able to design an adequate mine ventilation system it is necessary to understand how pollutant masses disperse into turbulent ventilation air streams. The mixing of gases and dusts with ventilating air, and dispersion of these pollutants in mine airways, are important flow or transfer problems. For the solution of such problems, the finite difference technique is often used. In this paper, numerical approximation schemes for the solution of the mass transfer problem have been developed using several explicit finite difference schemes. Results from these schemes have been compared with the analytical solution for spatial and time increments using the concept of Root Mean Square error. The comparison of various schemes reveals that the explicit finite difference schemes analyzed here give more accurate results at lower velocities, though the results are dependent on the spatial and time steps considered. At higher velocities the schemes tends to oscillate about the analytical solution. INTRODUCTION In mining, most of the mine air pollutants, such as respirable dust, methane, blasting fumes and diesel exhaust, are produced at the mine face and in haulageways. Injection of any of these pollutants in the mine ventilating air causes disturbances of the equilibrium state of the pollutant concentration of the ventilating air. The mixing of these gases and dusts with the ventilating air are typical examples of mass transfer processes. Pollutants are diluted by the stream of ventilating air flow along airways and discharged into the outside atmosphere of the mine through a return shaft. The dispersions of these pollutants in mine airways are important flow or transfer problems. Knowledge about pollutant sources, emission and transport of these pollutants are essential for ventilation planning and design to ensure good engineering control over air quality, quantity, and environmental conditions. Modeling of mass transfer phenomena in mine ventilation is largely based on extensive studies of turbulent dispersion in wind tunnels and the lower atmosphere of the earth. The general approach in the formulation of models lies in the recognition that these mass transfer phenomena can be conceptualized as a flow problem that can be solved by the general application of Taylor's theory (1954) of turbulent flow and diffusion with modification appropriate static and dynamic parameters. If the face zone is initially contaminated by a pollutant over a long section (e.g. instantaneous exposure of large gas accumulation, rapid methane release etc.), the process of decontaminating the mine workings can be regarded as displacement and diffusion of the tailing edge of the cloud of contaminates in the form of a semi-infinite gas body, for which a one-dimensional mass transfer equation is represented by: [at + u • ax = Ex ex2 + f (x,t)(1.1)] In Eq. (1.1), the term [~~] is the rate of growth of the concentration in the differential element, while a [(5xx )] is the net gain of material due to convective transfer. The two terms balance the total loss of material due to turbulent dispersion that is represented by [Ex . 21] and f(x,t), the source term for the pollutant in the roadway. Several cases of mass transfer that occur in mining can be identified and modelled using the conservative volume element method. The governing equation, along with the associated boundary and initial conditions, source terms and their solutions are detailed elsewhere (Bandopadhyay and Ramani, 1988, Devala, 1989). Only one mass transfer situation is presented (Figure 1) here for the present analysis. Important parameters such as collector concentration, pH, current density, aeration rate, etc., have been studied. The results indicate that electroflotation can be used more efficiently in processing rutile slimes (10 µ) under certain operating conditions.

For efficient management of operations, mining companies are required to be able to predict potential scenarios for main market factors. Competitive advantage and value creation are established through managing the value chain well. The mining value chain is usually faced with challenges from various shifts in commodity markets as well as ongoing uncertainties. Therefore, there is a need for accurate analysis of data from the markets, for the prediction of commodities, for instance, Precious Group Metals (PGM). The main objective of this research work is to apply machine learning methodologies with the aim to identify patterns and trends in the Precious Group Metals, and thereafter analyze and predict the future trends of these markets. Numerous machine learning models are applied to a dataset consisting of 15 years of daily price for eight precious metals namely Platinum, Palladium, Rhodium, Ruthenium, Osmium, Indium, Silver, and Gold. The results reveal the patterns and trends within the data sets and that different machine learning methods could be suited for the prediction of market prices for each of the PGMs. The application of an amalgamation of various machine learning methods may result in more accurate predictions of the PGM markets. Accurate prediction of market prices for PGMs will possibly result in unlocking untapped sources of value in the mining industry.

The electrochemical behavior of mineral and coal pyrites in stirred and quiescent alkaline boratelsulfate solutions @H 7.9-10.5) have been investigated using cyclic voltammetry. Significant differences in the electrochemical response of these pyrites were observed. At the mineral pyrite surface, three anodic peaks at about -0.8 V, -0.1 V and +0.5 V (SCE) have been detected along with their corresponding reduction peaks. The first two peaks correspond to FeIFeOI) and FeOI)lFe(III) oxidation. The third peak is present for quiescent conditions but disappears as a distinct peak when the electrolyte is stirred. In the upper voltage region +0.30V (SCE), the current increases markedly during stirring and the reactions correspond to the oxidation of pyrite with the formation FeOII) oxides plus elemental sulfur. Also there is evidence that Fe oxy-ions form. Coal pyrites, under rapid sweep conditions display only the first two anodic peaks, the associated reduction peaks and an additional reduction peak corresponding to one or more of the high voltage oxidation products. After prolonged exposure to high potentials, coal pyrite displays reactions similar to those of mineral pyrite but at much higher current densities demonstrating the much higher reactivity of the coal pyrite. The reactivity sequence was Upper Freeport coal pyrite > Pittsburgh coal pyrite > mineral pyrite.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the relationship between different milling procedures, viz. a ball mill and an IsaMill respectively, and the flotation performance of the different mill products. Two ores were used, viz. a base metal sulphide (BMS) and a platinum group mineral (PGM) UG2 ore. Flotation was used as a diagnostic to investigate whether the different milling procedures may have different effects of the floatability of the particles. The present study is part of a research programme investigating this question using a wide range of comminutiondevices and procedures. Similar particle size fractions from the different milling procedures were used in the flotation tests. The particles were characterized in terms of particle size distribution, morphology (using scanning electron microscopy and image analysis software) and rheology tests. The results have shown that in general when comparing similar feeds to flotation in terms of equivalent particle size distributions as indicated by the d80 value, the ball mill generally yielded better recoveries and grades in the case of the BMS and lower chromite recoveries in the case of the UG2 ore compared to the IsaMill. No significant differences were observed in the morphological or rheological characteristics of the particles subjected to the different milling procedures. Although the results appear to indicate that IsaMilling is less advantageous than ball milling in terms of the flotation performance for the two ores studied it should be emphasized that these results do not take into account the relative advantage which IsaMilling has over ball milling in terms of direct and indirect energy consumption and GHG emissions nor, most importantly, does it consider the platinum group element recoveries in the case of the UG2 which may have increased significantly as a result of the finer grind which the IsaMill produces after 4 passes compared to the ball mill after 64 min. Such results which will be reported is due course may show that the greater liberation expected after IsaMilling of the PGMs outweighs any disadvantages indicated in this study.

This paper describes the results of a comparative study of the geostatistical ore reserve estimation method over three conventional methods; the polygon method, the inverse of the distance squared (IDS) method, and ELIP which is similar to IDS. Each method was evaluated on its ability to accurately predict individual block grades for one bench of the Pima Nine, located near Tucson, Arizona. Results at the Pima Mine indicate that the geostatistical method is no better nor worse in predicting block grades and total tonnage than the ELIP or IDS methods in contrast, the polygon method is clearly inferior. All of the methods would have given better results if geology had been included in the block model. At already producing mines ELlP or IDS may be good choices since they involve substantially less cost in computer time. For prospective or new properties, the geostatistical model is more attractive, due to its ability to construct confidence limits on the estimates.

This paper investigates the performance of the neural network technique in a placer deposit situated at the Nome district in Alaska. Initially a single neural network model was constructed to estimate the gold grade. However, at a later stage, an ensemble model consisting of multiple networks was also constructed via the Adaboost algorithm. The reason behind the use of the ensemble model of the Adaboost algorithm was to examine if the ensemble model provided superior performance to the single neural network. As indicated by other studies, Adaboost did not have a better performance than a single neural network in this specific application. This may be due to the high noise inherent in the gold data used in this project. Consequently R2 values of gold prediction are also poor for both the single and multiple networks.

Recently, interest in rare earth based oxide powders for electronic applications has risen dramatically. Considerable research has been devoted to the chemical synthesis of these compounds to improve the control of physical and chemical characteristics of the powder. In most cases, a high degree of homogeneity, purity and reproducibility is necessary in order to obtain good application properties. The synthesis parameters can control particle size, surface area, and morphology as well as the degree of homogeneity and application properties. Rhone-Poulenc, a world leader in the production of separated Rare Earth chemicals has developed a flexible process to produce a wide variety of compounds. The different processes for the synthesis of YBa 2Cu 3 O 7 will be discussed and compared to the RP process in term of product quality, cost and flexibility.

"The use of Caro's acid as a replacement for hydrogen peroxide for the oxidation of vanadium prior to solvent extraction resulted in a 56% reduction in oxidant usage when compared on an equivalent hydrogen peroxide basis. Comparative oxidation tests, using two actual uranium mill raffinates, resulted in premature precipitation of an amorphous ferric vanadate when hydrogen peroxide was used to oxidize one of the raffinates containing a high iron to vanadium ratio. The use of Caro's acid eliminated the precipitation problem, thereby permitting the adjustment of the raffinate pH to a higher, more favourable level prior to solvent extraction.Potentiometric characterization of the raffinates revealed that vanadium is responsible for the inefficiency of hydrogen peroxide compared with Caro's acid, with the oxidation efficiency of iron being the same for both oxidants. A limiting potential between 720 and 740 mV was observed when using hydrogen peroxide, while, when using Care's acid, potentials approaching 1200 mV were achievable.A four-stage, countercurrent extraction performed on the oxidized raffinates did not reveal any operational problems. The extraction efficiency and the extraction coefficient were found to be higher when Caro's acid was used as the oxidant, as opposed to hydrogen peroxide.IntroductionMost vanadium is recovered as a by-product of some other process: leaching of Carnotite uranium ores, oil fly ash, phosphate rock or chromite processing. The major source of vanadium has been from uranium mills incorporating acid leaching of Carnotite ore s at elevated temperatures and pressures. The by-product recovery of vanadium from uranium ores of the Uravan Mineral Belt, located in the Colorado Plateau , is a common occurrence when vanadium recovery is economically viable."

In this paper, numerical approximation schemes, for solution of the mass transfer problem in mine ventilation have been developed by using three implicit finite difference schemes. Results from these schemes have been compared with the analytical solution for spatial and time increments, using the concept of Root Mean Square error. For implicit finite difference schemes, in general, the modified central difference scheme is better than the two other schemes at lower velocity. Also, at lower air velocities, implicit schemes underpredicted the concentration values. At higher air velocities, the Crank-Nicholson and Laasonen schemes provided better results than the Modified Central Difference scheme.
