In recent years the Government and other large consumers of coal have appreciated more and more the desirability of definitely determining by chemical analysis and test the character and quality of the coal they purchase. Higher prices for coal point forcibly to the need of giving more study to engine room and boiler room efficiencies and economies; this implies an intimate knowledge of the character and quality of the fuel used. Analyses and tests of delivered coal furnish data whereby power plant results can be comprehensively studied and a continuous check maintained on the coal and on the conditions of plant operation. Under authority of acts of Congress making appropriations for technologic investigation of fuels and the analyzing and testing of fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, a laboratory is maintained at the Pittsburgh station of the Bureau of Mines, where samples representing deliveries of coal purchased for Government use are analyzed and tested.

Analyses of scheelite from all the known scheelite fields in the South Island of New Zealand have shown that the scheelites are essentially molybdenum-free. The scheelites are almost stoichiometric CaWO4, except for some strontium replacing the calcium, with a maximum of 0·92 per cent SrO. Variation in strontium content appears to be' related to the metamorphic grade of the enclosing rocks.

"IntroductionTHIS PAPER presents some analyses of diabases from a number of metallogenic provinces in Canada and the United States. It is intended as a contribution to the literature on the genesis of mineral deposits associated with diabase.As it has been in the past, opinion today on the origin of the cobaltnickel- native silver and associated pitchblende type of deposit is sharply divided. Some geologists hold that this type of deposit is in some way genetically related to intrusive diabase; others are of the opinion that the deposits are related to granite. The controversy, like others of a similar nature, probably will not be settled satisfactorily for many years to come, •but in the meantime it is recognized that, with respect to most deposits of the type referred to, altogether too few facts are known for accurate conclusions on genesis to be drawn. To contribute in a small way to factual data on this whole .problem, the writer analyzed diabase from several districts in Canada in which deposits of the aforementioned type occur. For comparative purposes, the copper, cobalt, and nickel content of diabase from Cornwall, Pennsylvania, and of norite from the Sudbury basin of Ontario, was also determined.Insofar as is known, none of the analytical work undertaken had been previously carried out."

THE abundance and value of the tellurium minerals of Colorado is well known, but, as yet, few analyses have been made of them, and I offer these as a small contribution to the chemistry of these valuable ores. 1. Native Tellurium.-The specimens from which the analyses of this mineral were made are from the "John Jay" Mine, Boulder County, Colorado, where it occurs in quite large masses, though mixed with more or less silica and iron pyrites. It is usually a fine¬grained, tin-white mineral, but sometimes occurs in distorted, hexag¬onal prisms in cavities in the quartz. Before the blowpipe it gives the reactions for tellurium, sulphur and iron; by cupellation, it yields a small amount of gold. THE Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the com-position as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the fusing temperature of ash, Hardgrove grindability index, and the free-swelling index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 4 issued by the Bureau; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau's laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of delivered coal and "tipple" samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) are valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. Moreover, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

Tunnels as any other structures are affected by different loads and stresses. Generally, the loads on tunnels consist of both static and dynamic loads. These loads must both be considered in the tunnel design process. In this paper, the stability state of Jiroft water-transform tunnel is evaluated. Firstly, the in-situ stresses and then using Kirsch?s equations the induced stresses due to static loads in walls and crown of tunnel are calculated. Consequently, the strain caused by probable earthquake without considering the interaction between the concrete lining of tunnel and rock mass using seismic analysis is calculated based on free-field deformation. When the strain is determined, the simplified method of closed-form solution, Wang?s equations and Penzien?s equations are used to estimate the applied forces on the tunnel due to earthquake such as axial force and bending moment on a tunnel section taking into account the interaction of the tunnel concrete lining and rock mass. Results of this study show that the loads applied to the tunnel as a result of earthquake waves can be affect the stability of underground structures, especially long structures such as tunnels.

A method to predict stress-induced failures around excavations based on the mapped geological and rock mechanical information is studied. Totally of 7 km of newly excavated tunnels are mapped in the Inmet’s Pyhäsalmi mine in Finland at depth between 1000 - 1440 m from which the results and conclusions from the firstly mapped 1.7 km of tunnels are reported. The main rock type at the site is very hard volcanite having uniaxial compressive strength of 230 MPa in median and GSI-value 72 - 80. The maximum in situ stress around the tunnels is 65 - 85 MPa. The prediction of observed stress failures was preceded by comparing elastic 3-D simulation results of tunnels with three statistical yield criteria. Read’s or Hoek & Brown’s yielding criteria are found the most relevant, though, the effect of anisotropy was found to be significant. The most important parameters having a correlation with stress failures are the tunnel orientation and the foliation of rock. Also, the rock type and its strength, tunnel shape and the geological anomalies have their effects. Further, a delay time on mapping was found to clearly diminishing of the most violent failures. Une méthode de prédiction des contraintes à la rupture autour d'excavation, établie sur la base de cartographie géologique et d'information sur la mécanique des roches, à été étudiée. Au total, 7 km d'un tunnel nouvellement percé à une profondeur de 1000 à 1400 m ont été cartographiés dans la mine de Inmet’s Pyhäsalmi en Finlande. La roche principale du site est une vulcanite dur ayant une résistance à la compression uniaxiale de 230 MPa (valeur moyenne) et une valeur GSI de 72 - 80. La contrainte in situ maximale autour du tunnel se situe entre 65 et 85 MPa. La prédiction des contraintes à la rupture observées a été évaluée en comparant les résultats d'une simulation 3D d'un tunnel avec trois critères de limite d'élasticité statistiques. Le critère de limite d'élasticité de Read ou de Hoek & Brown’s se trouvent être les plus important, même si les effets de l'anisotropie sont significatifs. Les paramètres les plus importants ayant une corrélation avec la rupture sont l'orientation du tunnel et la foliation de la roche. De plus, le type de roche et sa résistance à la compression, la forme du tunnel et les anomalies géologiques ont aussi leur importance. Finalement, un délai dans la cartographie résulte en une diminution nette des ruptures violentes. Basierend auf kartierten geologischen und felsmechanischen Informationen, wird eine Methode untersucht, um spannngsbedingtes Versagen um Ausbrüche herum vorherzusagen. Insgesamt werden 7 km neu ausgebrochenen Tunnels in einer Tiefe zwischen 1000 und 1400 m in der Inmet Pyhäsalmin Mine in Finnland kartiert. Das hauptsächlich vorkommende Gestein ist sehr hart und vulkanischen Ursprungs mit einer mittleren einachsialen Druckfestigkeit von 230 MPa (Medianwert) und einem GSI-Wert von 72-80. Die maximale In-situ-Spannung im Tunnel beträgt 65-85 MPa. Die Vorhersage von beobachteten Spannungsversagen werden weitergeführt indem man elastische 3-D-Simulationsergebnisse von Tunneln mit drei statistischen Fliesskriterien vergleicht. Read's oder Hoek's Fliesskriteria werden dabei als die relevantesten Kriterien angesehen, obwohl auch der Effekt der Anisotropie als wesentlich erachtet wird. Die wichtigsten Parameter für eine Korrelation von Spannungsversagen sind die Orientierung des Tunnels und die Schieferung der Gesteinsschichten. Desweiteren haben Gesteinsart, Tunnelprofil und geologische Anomalien ihren Einfluss. Ausserdem zeigt sich, dass eine Verzögerung bei der Kartierung die ausgeprägtesten Versagen deutlich verringern.

Surface mining of multiple scams by mountaintop mining methodology is complex in the Appalachian region of West Virginia. Excess spoil from the removal of overburden and interburden is disposed in the adjacent valleys. The valley fills so formed are some of the largest earth constructions, with a relief of 450 ft (137 m) to 650 ft (198 m) and a stretch of 500 ft (152 m) to 2000 ft (610 m). The stability of the valley fills has become an issue of public concern. This paper describes three cases of valley fill slopes. The analysis of each case involved the description of the geo-mechanical properties of different surface and sub-surface layers, and the surface configuration of the slope. Slope stability was carried out using deterministic as well as probabilistic approaches. Based on the analysis, it was found that valley till slopes were stable due to configuration, and the premise that valley fills with great stretch and high volume of spoil tend to be unstable does not hold.

The coal-mining districts of Washington are mainly situated west of the Cascade Mountains. The eastern boundaries of Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, King, Pierce, and Lewis Counties, shown in Figure 1, form the backbone of the mountain range. The mines are on the foothills of the slope and extend to the shores of Puget Sound in the central and northern portions. The subbituminous fields of Lewis, Thurston, and Cowlitz Counties extend into the valleys west of the mountains. The Roslyn field, a small but important area, Lies on the eastern slope of the Cascade Range. If western Washington is divided into three areas from north to south the bituminous coal fields and most of the active mining operations will be found largely in the central area. In the southern portion there are large areas of subbituminous coals of varying quality extending from Centralia to the Columbia River. In the northern portion, mining is at present practically restricted to one mine which is working a subbituminous bed near the city of Bellingham.

OIL-FIELD waters enter into many underground problems with which the petroleum engineer has to deal. Whether the problem is one of infiltration or natural encroachment, it is always desirable to determine the source of the water before commencing repair or remedial work. The usual mechanical tests for determining the source of extraneous water in wells are slow and expensive. An excellent means for the identification of oil-field waters may be afforded by their chemical characteristics when the chemical character of waters from the various sands has been established, by careful sampling and analysis cautiously interpreted. In the Salt Creek field, Wyoming, a fairly high degree of efficiency has been attained in the controlof field operations by utilizing the information afforded by the analysis. All of the operating companies appreciate this means of identifying waters, with the result that water-sampling has become general practice. Most of the chemical work dealing with Salt Creek waters has been done since the laboratories of the Midwest Refining Co. and the U. S. Geological Survey, were established in the field; the former in 1922, the latter in 1924. A spirit of cooperation has existed between the company and the government personnel by which many of the data for this paper were made available.

Failure tests on laterally loaded single and pile group are analyzed with a 3-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element program. In the analysis, the mechanical behavior of the ground is supposed to be elasto-perfect plastic with Drucker-Prager's yielding criterion. The nonlinearity of the piles is simulated by assuming a hyperbolic relation between the bending moment and the curvature of the piles. The influence of the axial stress on the cast-in-place concrete piles is also considered in the numerical analysis. It is found that the mechanical behavior of the piles subjected to lateral loading, such as the load-displacement relation up to an ultimately large deformation, and the distribution of bending moment in the pile group can be well simulated.

Gas-fired pusher furnaces are commonly used to heat steel slabs before hot rolling. Temperatures well above 1000 °C combined with an oxidizing atmosphere containing H2O, CO2 and O2 result in rapid oxidation of most steel grades. The resulting oxide scale and the chemistry of the metal-scale-interface are major determining factors for the occurrence of hot rolling defects. To better understand these phenomena, lab-scale trials were performed with two different steel grades in an electric tube furnace in the temperature range 1000-1250 °C, using an atmosphere of about 20 % H2O, 7 % CO2 and 3 % O2. Humidification of the gas was achieved by evaporation, using a custom thermostat with standard laboratory glassware. The resulting samples were prepared metallographically, using cold mounting under vacuum with taper section angles, and analyzed using light microscopy and SEM/EDS. The scale structure of the Si alloyed steel was highly dependent on the oxidation temperature due to the formation of eutectic liquid phases of FeO, Fe2SiO4 and FeAl2O4. Below the eutectic temperature, the scale of the Si steel appeared to be made up of three distinct areas: The external scale consisting solely of Fe oxides, the internal scale containing Fe2SiO4 and FeAl2O4, and an internal oxidation zone with SiO2 and Al2O3 in a mostly plain Fe matrix. Comparisons of the experimental results with simulations of the internal oxidation showed good qualitative agreement.

To optimise the haulage of the large tonnages produced from stopes in this high production gold mine, an ore pass and feeder system was introduced. This ore pass was designed and developed in 2006 and the plate feeder installed and commissioned soon after. Cavity Monitoring Surveys (CMS) have been undertaken of the ore pass since it was commissioned. The original thickness that was surveyed of the pillar between the ore pass and decline in 2006 was approximated to be 19 m. Throughout its use large blocks of rock were reporting at the plate feeder. This was the first indication that the ore pass was failing somewhere between the tipping level of the 9410 level and the plate feeder at the 9330. Even so CMS surveys were not taken systematically to firstly identify the area of failure or for monitoring. In August 2008 after implementing management systems, large blocks were still reporting to the plate feeder. The decision was made to empty the pass enough to carry out a CMS survey of the area. Subsequently it was discovered that the area of failure was between the decline and ore pass and that since the first survey the pillar thickness had been reduced to approximately 9.7 m. Further management controls were put in place to slow movement of the material and to limit the use of the 9410 tipping level, but this did not alleviate the rate of failure entirely. The results of an initial inelastic numerical model indicated that most of the pillar was damaged and that failure into the decline likely if no changes were made. The numerical modelling predicted that even if material was no longer passing through the ore pass interaction between the voids was unavoidable and would most likely result in instability. The ore pass and plate feeder are an integral part of the haulage system for the remaining life-of-mnie. Two solutions were sought to firstly reinforce and stabilise the pillar between the ore pass and decline and secondly to rehabilitate the ore pass or find an alternate design that could still utilise the plate feeder. This paper summarises the analysis and resulting rehabilitation that was used to accomplish this.

Belt conveyor transfers are the most likely location for high wear rates and failures. Belt transfers are necessary to change the direction of conveyed material and will remain a part of belt conveyor systems into the future. Burden being accelerated due to fall and changes in direction from one system to the next, prevents steady state flow which introduces component fatigue. The conveyor belt is considered the greatest cost item over the life of a belt conveyor system and consumes considerable downtime to replace, therefore a financial incentive exists to preserve this high-cost item. Other issues created at the transfer include health risks of uncontained dust and product losses due to spillage. Additional consideration to support the belt is one way to improve the life of components and contain dust within the transfer chute. The humble impact cradle/bed has changed little over the years whilst conveyor systems have achieved ever greater flow rates. Further development of the impact cradle is an opportunity to reduce maintenance costs and increase uptime. The peak technology on the market for conventional impact belt support is the dynamic impact cradle, which ensures the belt support area under the chute allows for some dynamic travel, whilst also maintaining a consistent skirt board area. The impact energy at a transfer when installed with Kinder Australia’s dynamic impact belt support system was measured to further understand the forces involved and how they compare with static belt support systems. Adding further dynamic capacity to the load zone has been shown to increase belt life by at least 30 per cent. Other components also benefit from reducing impact energy in the transfer and the incorporation of polyurethane bushes at roller supports has been employed further increase roller and frame life. Kinder Australia has developed a unique and innovative range of belt support technologies that further promote dynamic travel whilst maintaining a consistent skirt board area without a significant increase in belt-friction tension. The aim of a transportation system in an underground mine is to move the rock masses from one location to another in the most preferable manner by minimising the long and short-term operational costs. A continuous improvement of material transportation systems used in mines generates a need for continuous investigation of the current and new underground transportation systems. In an underground mine, an orepass is a common system used to transfer the material to the lower levels. If this system loses the ability to transport or store the necessary material capacities, it would result in production disturbances. In this paper, discrete event simulation (DES) was utilised to analyse the material inflow and outflow of the orepass systems when subjected to the different conditions. The study presented in this paper is based on the Malmberget mine, the second largest underground sublevel caving (SLC) iron ore operation in the world.

An intelligent tool has been developed to analyse the quality of diecast components. The influence of both design and process parameters has been studied in great detail. The tool, based on expert systems related technologies, can identify the causes for the defective castings manufactured. Design related causes such as gate position; gate area, runner design etc. as well as process related causes such as cycle time, cavity filling time and melt temperature are suggested by analysing the data on defective castings for a manufacturing campaign. This intelligent analysis is useful for both design as well as production engineers in the decision making process. All the causes for the occurrence of defects are classified into two categories. The firs category is the 'rootcauses' i.e. the causes which are related to the actual process, material and design parameters and which can be directly monitored. The second category is more abstract in nature and is classified as `metacauses'. These capture the scientific rationale implicit in the cause and defect relationships. This knowledge on causes and defects is represented in the form of a structured graph rather than by a set of rules, which, coupled with forward reasoning and heuristic search techniques results in an elegant and efficient approach. Uncertainties and the degree of relationship among causes and defects are represented by a fuzzy probabilistic model.

Increased environmental regulations and pressures have created changing and new demands for tailings management strategies in a variety of mining applications. Critical among these items is the disposal of tailings as the pursuit of increased yields and lower costs have driven the application of different process technologies. With a number of technologies having a niche application focus, the belt filter press has been utilised for decades as a cost-effective and versatile option for dewatering different types of mineral tailings and other waste process streams. One of the critical advantages of the belt filter press is the technology’s ability to adapt and work in numerous plant designs, operating conditions and applications. As permitting and disposal options have become more stringent, plant designers, operators and equipment suppliers must develop comprehensive and site-specific economic, design and process evaluation techniques to ensure proper equipment selection and system design for belt filter presses or any other dewatering technologies. This paper will explore these techniques in relation to belt filter presses (with reference to other technologies) in a variety of different applications, along with other considerations to ensure a successful tailings dewatering system and disposal design. The practical significance of the in situ grade variability is usually neglected. Although recognized, often times it is either ignored or just considered as a vague guideline in many of the decisions dealing with exploration, reserve estimation, and mine planning. This paper stresses the significance of grade variability for exploration and mining, and illustrates its liaison to the structural features of the ore deposits, as well as to the mining parameters used for mine extraction. Some geostatistical results obtained from a silver mine, tungsten mine, and copper mine in South America are discussed.
