In this paper, a state-of-the-art, three-dimensional, full waveform, microseismic system was used to analyze the rock failure around a deep (> 750 in (2500 ft) of cover) bump-prone longwall panel. The microseismic system consisted of both underground and surface geophones coupled through radio telemetry and a fiber-optic network to produce pseudo real-time detection and location of seismic events surrounding the coal seam. This was the first microseismic installation of this scope at a U.S. coal mine, and the system was intended to help determine the exact strata mechanics associated with the redistribution of stress and the associated gob formation at one of the U.S.'s deepest longwall mines. Overall, 5,000 calibrated seismic events were recorded during the mining of one panel, including a Richter magnitude 4.2 event which occurred inside of the array. Analysts of these events provides a number of notable insights into the rock mass behavior. For instance, the longwall panel was widened during the retreat process, and the mining-induced seismicity shows a distinctly different behavior between the start of the panel, the mining of the narrow part of the panel and the mining of the wider part of the panel. Also, in itself, the acquisition of the ML 4.2 event was a major milestone in geomechanical and bump research. This is the first time that such an event has been recorded with this detail and accuracy at a bump-prone coal mine in the U.S. `The analysis of this single event has set distinct new limits on the relationship between mining seismicity and coal bumps.

Roof bolting typically follows the extraction of a commodity to help keep the roof from collapsing. During 2004 to 2013, roof bolter operators had the highest number of machinery-related injuries, accounting for 64.7 percent, at underground coal mines. This paper analyzes U.S. roof bolter fatal and nonfatal lost-time injury data at underground work locations for all commodities from 2004 through 2013 and determines risk indices for six roof bolting tasks. For fatal and nonfatal incidences combined, the roof bolting tasks in order of the highest to lowest risk index were bolting, handling of materials, setting the temporary roof support (TRS), drilling, tramming, and traversing. For fatalities, the roof bolting tasks in order of the highest to lowest risk index were handling of materials, setting the TRS, bolting, drilling, traversing, and tramming. Age was found to be a significant factor. Severity of injury, indicated by days lost, was found to increase with increasing age as well as with increasing experience, largely due to the confounding of age and experience. The operation of the roof bolting machine used in underground mining should be a research priority given the high frequency and severity of incidents. The results also suggest that temporal factors may exist, so additional research is warranted to better understand these factors and potentially develop interventions. This research provides a datadriven foundation from which future research can be conducted for safety interventions to reduce the frequency and severity of incidences involving the roof bolter activities of bolting, handling of materials, and setting the TRS.

The applicability of the beam theory in analysis of roof- pillar-weak floor interaction in partial extraction room-and-pillar mining is presented. The mine structure is modeled as an equivalent multi-indeterminate overburden elastic beam supported by elasto-plastic pillars; resting on a viscoelastic layer of immediate weak floor strata underlain by a competent rock mass. The developed analytical model was initially utilized to conduct sensitivity analyses of different variables affecting the mining system, such as the deformability of coal and weak floor strata, thickness of weak floor strata, number of pillars in a panel, width of pillars, width of panel etc. These analyses were then extended to three overburden strata - coal pillar - floor strata lithologies typical of active coal mining areas in Illinois.

This report describes serious injuries occurring to bulldozer operators working at U.S. coal, metal, and nonmetal mines. The period covered is 1988-97. The data were collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). A total of 873 injury records are examined. These injuries resulted in 18 fatalities and 31,866 lost workdays. All of these injuries occurred to dozer operators while they were doing common production tasks. An injury classification system was developed to code the narrative information that describes the circumstances surrounding the injuries. Injury records are categorized by activity (task being done), incident result (what apparently happened to the dozer), and operator impact (how the operator was injured). Where information is available, contributing factors are identified. This classification system supplemented the standard injury/illness data classification system compiled by MSHA. The results of the study indicate that, from 1993 to 1997, the number of serious injuries to dozer operators declined by 30%. The reduction in serious injuries was accompanied by a decrease in days lost due to injury. Although the number of reported injuries has decreased, dozer operators being jolted and jarred accounts for the largest percentage (70% of the incidents) and severity (75% of the workdays lost) of serious injuries while operating the equipment. Vertical jars (while backing up the dozer) resulting in injury to the operator accounted for a sizable percentage of jolting and jarring injuries. Working near an edge carries significant risk for fatal injuries. Of 116 incidents where the dozer fell over an edge, rolled over, or fell into a hidden void, 14 (12%) resulted in fatal injuries. In cases where the dozer operator either jumped or was thrown out of the cab in a fall over or rollover, 7 out of 26 were killed. Overall, 80% of the fatalities occurred while working near an edge or hidden void or on a steep slope. Further reductions in injury risk will require more widespread use of seatbelts, field and laboratory research interventions to better assess the effect of alternative engineering (e.g., seat and seat suspension) designs to dampen or isolate the effects of shock and vibration, and continued focus on hazard awareness, recognition, and response.

INTRODUCTION AND SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES An area in the midwest overlying abandoned room-and-pillar mine workings at, shallow depth has been experiencing subsidence movements with associated damage to surface structures. Other coal companies in the area have also been having similar experience. A 16 - month cooperative study between a mining company and the Department of Mining Engineering at SIUC was developed with the following objectives. 1) Determine the extent to which surface and subsurface movements were complete in the area, 2) Identify the mechanism(s) of subsidence in the area, 3) Determine the influence of geology and hydrology of the area on subsidence movements, 4) Observe the conditions of abandoned underground workings with a borehole TV camera, 5) Characterize the extent of damage and monitor possible progressive damage to selected surface structures, and 6) Make recommendations to a) minimize further damage to surface structures in the area, b) identify future areas that may be affected by these movements and c) modify mining systems to minimize these movements.

Coal mine drainage, which occurs predominantly as acid mine drainage in the East, is a serious contaminant of surface and groundwater systems (Appalachian Regional Commission, 1969). Treatment of this pollutant can be very costly and is often difficult to achieve (Appalachian Regional Commission, 1969). A major source of coal mine drainage in surface waters is polluted ground- water discharge, therefore treatment of surface water does little to combat groundwater contamination. Prevention of the formation of coal mine drainage and restricting its entrance into the groundwater protects both surface and groundwater systems. The formation of acid mine drainage may be inhibited by preventing contact between toxic spoil, air, and water (Grim and Hill, 1974). This may be accomplished by surrounding toxic spoil with a relatively impermeable barrier, thus restricting groundwater and oxygen flow through the toxic zone. Toxic spoil packages constructed in this manner would minimize the entrance of acid mine drainage into the groundwater system, allowing dilution by uncontaminated water to occur. If successful, concentrations of coal mine drainage would be reduced below toxic levels.

Geologist, Pennsylvania Geological Survey THE following tables have been compiled from the annual reports of the Inspectors of Mines, to determine the percentages of fatal and non-fatal casualties from roof-falls and explosions of fire-damp. As we cannot assume that every accident has been recorded by the inspectors; as many casualties terminating fatally after the lapse of a considerable period, are inevitably recorded as "non-fatal;" and as clerical errors may have crept into the compilation,* the figures of these tables cannot be considered absolutely correct, but the summary is sufficiently reliable to show the features I wish to differentiate. Under the heading a Miscellaneous" are included all accidents not directly attributable to explosions of fire-damp, roof-falls or falls of coal. Prominent among the numerous causes included under this head are premature or delayed explosion of blasts, accidental explosion of powder or cartridges, accidents from mine cars, falls in shafts, machine accidents, sliding of loose coal in pitching breasts, sltffouration by choke-damp, etc., comprising in all 48 per cent of the total number of casualties. * Compiled by Mr. Maxwell Chapman

With the trend in the coal mining industry pushing towards improved productivity and greater production, the number and size of longwall panels is increasing rapidly. The development and mining of large longwall panels causes unique problems in the provision of adequate ventilation at the working faces. Because of the transient nature of the longwall panel, and the difficult field conditions for ventilation measurements, detailed pressure and volume surveys are often not conducted around the longwall circuit. This is unforlunate because the highest resistance airway in longwall mines is typically the longwall tailgate, which frequently represents the only unregulated split in the ventilation network. This paper examines data collected from ventilation studies of longwall panels at nine mines. The variation in airway resistance, ventilating pressure and airflow is examined and compared with specific factors such as airway dimensions, ground conditions and support type used.

The experiments described in this paper were carried out as a preliminary to a comprehensive study of the factors which affect the behaviour of lead during and subsequent to deformation by rolling and pressing. These observations are therefore to be considered as introductory to a further paper dealing more specifically with the above-mentioned variables.EXPERIMENTALThe rolling was carried out in a small mill with six-inch diameter surface ground rolls, both of which were electrically driven at 15 r.p.m. The average draft per pass approximated 0·03 in. The pressing was performed between platens in the compression unit of a 30-ton Amsler machine. The flat faces used had a ground finish comparable with the surface of the rolls. All hardness measurements were made with a Herbert "dead load" Brinell machine. The following te'sting conditions were maintained: ball diameter-5 mm.; load-10 kgms.; duration of loading-30 seconds; temperature of testing-16 to 18°C. The number of variables which can effect flotation of molybdenite is very large. This paper discusses the effect of two operating variables, namely, the degree of aeration and agitation, on the grade and recovery of molybdenite. A series of factorially designed flotation tests were carried out in a "Leeds Automatic Laboratory Flotation Cell." The analysis of flotation results indicate that molybdenite can be characterized into fast-floating and slow-floating components. The rates of fast-floating components, which do not create a problem in flotation, could be varied by changing agitation of airflow rates. However, the rate of slow-floating components was stable and was only a function of residence time in the float machine. The degree of aeration has a significant effect on the grade of MoS2 with only a slight effect on the recovery of MoS2. The degree of agitation has a slight effect on the grade, but does not effect the recovery of molybdenite. The implications of the results on the design of flotation cells and control and optimization of the existing circuits is subsequently discussed.

Geological Engineering is now a recognized curriculum in most of the mining schools in United States. Graduates of these schools are scattered over the face of the earth, participating in exploration and mining enterprises of diverse character. They are engaged in the mapping of new mineral deposits, in the extension of old deposits, the estimation of reserves, microscopic analysis, and in the direction of exploitation and conservation of man's natural resources. The training of men qualified to carry out these technical phases of modern industry has fallen essentially to the mining schools. For the most part they have met the demand for technically trained men in the mineral industries. Schools Offering Geological Engineering Degree The mining schools have passed through the early stages of their development and at the present offer varied curricula covering the fields of geological engineering, mining engineering, and metallurgical engineering. Usually a B.S. degree is offered in any of these three fields. However, .there has been some tendency of recent date on the part of the Engineers Council for Professional Development to question the validity of a B.S. degree in Geological Engineering. The of this paper is to examine the curricula as offered in the mining schools, to evaluate their engineering content, and to propose minimum requirements for the degree of Geological Engineering in the mining industry. The curricula of eight institutions that offer the degree of B.S. in Geological Engineering or Mining Geology have been studied (Table 1). All except one of these schools are in or near mining districts and occur west of the Mississippi River. They are all state-supported institutions that have come into existence because of the state's need for technically trained men. A graduate from .a mining school is called upon to perform many duties of a technical nature. His initial task may be to make a geological map of a mine or the surface above, but before the map is finished he may be asked to take over the responsibility of getting the ore "on top." And finally, he might find it essential to know how to mill the ore. Certainly this requires technically trained men and the mining schools are essentially the organizations to do the job. The departments of geology in these schools are training geological engineers. Field Of Geology If we were to accept the opinions of some writers, we would be forced to conclude that all geology departments offer only a "dilettante" variety of subjects.

The basic parameters causing outbursts are rock pressure, gas characteristics and the physico-mechanical properties of the coal. The three sets of factors are to some degree interdependent. At Collinsville, the gas characteristics coupled with the physico-mechanical properties of the coal appear to be the major factors contributing to outbursts. The relative importance of rock pressure is uncertain. The following geological parameters appear to be necessary before outbursts can occur. 1. A coal rank greater than 1.2% vitrinite reflectance. 2. Thrust faults with throws greater than 3.Om or strike- slip faults with coal gouge wider than 0.3m. 3. Seam gas emission values greater than 1.1 cm3 /g. Igneous intrusions are the likely source of the carbon dioxide seam gas. Outbursts have occurred at depths ranging from 215m to 265m. They occur at these relatively shallow depths due to: 1. the high rank of coal at the present topographic surface and the high coalification gradient; 2. the relatively high degree of tectonic deformation of the strata; 3. the seam gas characteristics; and 4. the extent of igneous intrusions.

Roof and rib failures in underground coal mines are one of the major problems facing the industry today. In addition to safety considerations, the resulting economic impact of such failures is staggering. Uncovering and replacing buried and damaged equipment and clearing entries can account for a large expenditure in lost man-hours and machinery. Yet, because of the complex nature of its formation, geological variability, and structural characteristics, coal mine roof strata is one of the least controlable of all mine design parameters. This is especially true along the leading (southeastern) edge of the Appalachian coalfields where considerable faulting and movement has contributed to hazardous coal mining roof conditions. During this research, a detailed study of several mines, in the southern Appalachian coalfields, was undertaken to determine the most prominent geomechanical factors affecting roof stability and to evaluate their influence in promoting unstable ground conditions. In order to accomplish this task, the major geological and geomechanical features found to be detrimental to coal mine roof within the Appalachian basin were identified and mapped in four Virginia mines. Statistical processing by chi-square and regression analysis was used to determine the influence of geology, mine-layout, and support methods on roof stability. It was found that some easily determined parameters can be successfully used to predict potentially unstable areas. A simplified roof classification system was developed based on these geomechanical parameters, which can be used to assess the stability of a particular roof type. A roof rating index was also devised capable' of expressing the probability of a failure under a given set geomechanical condition.

"The size distribution of coal mine dust is one of its most important characteristics because the particle size is known to govern the region of deposition of dust within the human respiratory tract. In addition, dust characteristics, particle settling rate, transportability of the dust and the efficiency of dust control measures are all affected by the particle size. As a result, particle size distribution of the airborne dust in a coal mine is a fundamental property that impacts on the health of underground workers.This paper deals with some basic findings on the size distribution of cool mine dust based upon the results of data collection in six underground coal mines using continuous miners. All airborne dust sampling was performed on development sections using eight stage cascade impactors and permissible 2. O l / min pumps. Samplers locations were fixed in the sections with respect to the continuous miner and roofbolter or with respect to the intake and return airways • Sampling times varied from 45 minutes to 6 hours , depending upon the dust concentration. The first topic of analysis was the test to determine whether the commonly used lognonnal distribution is valid when applied to airborne coal mine dust. Secondly, the conventional method of representing the· distribution using two parameters, the geometric mean and the geometric standard deviation, is questioned. Since almost all size data were found to show some degree of bimodality, the two parameter lognonnal distribution may not represent the total airborne coal mine dust size , quite adequately. Bimodal lognonnal distribution was tested to be a good approximation in the case with two modes in the size distribution.The final topic discussed in this paper is the 'locational variation of the airborne dust size distributions within the continuous mining section. The size distributions varied considerably at the different sampling locations with the continuous miner and roofbolter producing the coarser distributions. Fine size modes in the range of 2 to 4µ m including mostly respirable dust particles were present in almost all samples • Second dust generating sources such as the shuttle car movement were found to be major causes of high respirable dust concentrations in some cases ."

Local accumulation of methane in workings of a longwall is one of the most common causes of mining accidents. This gas has many sources: it may leak from goaf through permeable sealings, or through gaps between roof support sections. This stream is then mixed with ventilation air. In the case of auxiliary ventilation ducts, or free jet fans, we have to consider the propagation of a clean air stream in areas with an air-methane mixture. Therefore, modelling the mixing process of methane with ventilation air is important for determining the hazardous areas and thus to ensure safety. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), specifically the finite volume method, provides tools for such modelling. However, this method requires validation. For this purpose, we have compared measurements with simulations for selected test cases having sufficient similarity to the present problems. In typical methane explosion hazard areas, such as a longwall, it is difficult to make measurements sufficiently to confirm credibility of 3D CFD simulations. As a relevant alternative, an injector methane drainage station placed in an underground gallery has been selected. The stream of drained goaf methane is entrained by compressed air powered injectors and then mixed with ventilation air. Research in this area does not interfere with mining operations, it can be performed safely in a repeatable way. Flow within the site has many similarities to conditions in mine drifts of the longwall area. Comparative research of measuring the methane concentration distribution in the mine drift downstream injector station, with simulations of propagation of the methane stream, was carried out. For measuring the methane concentration distribution in the mine drift a multipoint measurement velocity system developed at the Strata Mechanics Research Institute was used. For the simulation a finite volume method for turbulent flow of gas mixtures was applied. Preliminary results of comparison are shown as graphs and tables.CITATION:Janus, J and Krawczyk, J, 2013. An extensive series of tests was carried out on a ball mill-rake classifier circuit in the New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. concentrator. The data were used to develop a mathematical model of the operation of a rake classifier and this model has been used in the simulation of the performance of a ball mill-rake classifier circuit on a digital computer. As a result of this simulation it has been possible to develop a technique for the optimization and control of a circuit which includes these units.

A method has been developed for the prediction of the performance of multi-stage grinding-cyclone classification circuits of any degree of complexity on any ore for a wide range of operating conditions. The method involves the simulation of the circuit on a digital computer by means of. mathematical models of the individual units. At present, to establish the characteristics of the ore and the machines in mathematical terms, it is necessary to know the performance of a simple system on the ore for one known feed rate and feed sizing analysis.Further work on the separate identification of the terms defining the characteristics of the ore and the machines may permit the method to be applied directly to the data derived from small scale tests on ores.INTRODUCTIONThe cost of preparing metalliferous ores for concentration processes by, grinding and classification frequently represents a major portion of the cost of treating such ores, and it is necessary both from an economic and a metallurgical point of view that grinding and classification circuits should be operated at their optimum efficiency. It will be realized that the processes carried out in all units in such circuits behave according to physical laws and, if a mathematical representation of the laws applying to each unit could be derived, optimization of the overall process for any given conditions of feed or product may not be difficult.The physical processes in both tumbling mills and hydraulic classifiers are extremely complex and do not appear at present to be amenable to a rigorous mathematical analysis. Each year more than 400 coal miners are injured (fatal and non-fatal) by rock falling from between or around roof supports. Many of these injuries could be prevented by the installation of roof screen (wire mesh). However, many coal mines may be reluctant to use roof screen because of the added cost. The goal of this study was to determine the potential saving in workers? compensation (WC) premiums that could be achieved due to a reduction in rock fall injuries after roof screening. The WC rate-setting methods utilized by IL and KY were investigated in this study. Using actual data obtained from MSHA, national and state WC bodies and individual insurance companies (e.g. average cost per injury, loss cost rate, number of injuries per year, number of injuries preventable each year with roof screening), hypothetical mines (representing two mine sizes: 67 and 150 employees) were constructed with realistic ranges for estimates of injuries and WC premium costs. Using each state?s actual WC rate-setting formulas, total savings in WC costs after a three-year period were determined. Across both states, savings in WC premiums ranged from 1.8% to 14.6% when injuries were reduced by 10% to 20%. Additionally, an economic analysis was performed for an existing mine consisting of 67 employees. For this mine, the annual cost of a roof screening program was estimated at $240,000. If the screening prevented 13 ?struck by? WC claims over a 3-year period at this mine, the reduction in WC premiums alone could pay for the entire screening program.

Using chip sample data and spatial structure parameters from a large mined-out section of a South African gold mine the advantages to be gained from a regular underground borehole drilling programme have been investigated for short- and medium- to long-term planning based on block valuations. The results have been compared with the current position, which relies invariably on the extrapolation of limited peripheral sampling data from raises, gullies or stope faces. Some preliminary work has also been done regarding the implications of such underground drilling on costs used for the present pay limit calculations. The results of the study, though preliminary, show that the net advantage of advance regular underground drilling could be substantial and that a more intensive follow-up research is warranted.
