A technique was developed to determine the fraction of air recirculated from the scrubber exhaust toward the face and the fraction of gas captured by the scrubber. To determine these two values, a series of tests was required. In the first test, gas was released at the face area and concentrations measured at the scrubber exhaust. In the second test, gas was released directly into the scrubber with concentrations again measured in the scrubber exhaust. The simultaneous solution of two independent flow expressions gave values of recirculation and scrubber capture. A series of tests was conducted with various combinations of scrubber flow, curtain flow, setback distance, and machine location. Statistical analyses then were conducted to determine those factors which influenced the levels of scrubber recirculation and scrubber capture in a deep cut. INTRODUCTION As cutting depths increase, the trend is toward the use of blowing face ventilation systems. With these ventilation systems, the potential exists for recirculation between the scrubber exhaust and the intake air stream. One concern is that methane gas, having been removed from the face area, is subsequently recirculated back into the intake airflow. Under these conditions, methane-laden air could be substituted for fresh intake air, leading to increased methane concentrations at the face. There is currently no standard for recirculation between the scrubber and intake airflows. The implied understanding of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is, and has always been, that any recirculation of ventilation air is unacceptable. To minimize recirculation potential, MSHA suggests that operators maintain scrubber and curtain flows within 0.47 m3/sec (1000 cfm) of each other. Given that recirculation may occur in some circumstances, the question arises as to how much recirculation constitutes a hazard for the face workers. Unfortunately, there is currently insufficient information to answer this. Emphasis must instead be placed on means to quantify the amount of recirculation between the scrubber and face area. Methods must also be examined to control this phenomenon. This paper presents a technique for quantifying recirculation and scrubber capture levels in a blowing face ventilation system. Several ventilation parameters are investigated to determine their effects on these levels. DEVELOPMENT OF RECIRCULATION EXPRESSIONS One way to measure airflow quantities at a point near the face would be to measure the gas flow rate Qgas, and gas concentration c at that location. The airflow Qair, would be simply the ratio of these two values, Qair, = Qgas/c. Although gas concentration values, c, can be obtained easily with existing gas monitoring equipment, it is more difficult to obtain gas flow readings, Qgas, at specific locations. To obtain these values of Qgas, another method was needed. Previous work in this area was conducted by Kissell and Bielicki (1975). However, the calculations in their model assumed a constant gas concentration in the region around the continuous miner. In a deep cut, it is questionable that gas concentrations would remain constant or uniform around the mining machine. The technique presented here does not rely on this assumption. It instead assumes that the gas concentration in the scrubber exhaust remains constant. A quantity of gas released at the cutting face either flows into the scrubber inlets or bypasses the inlets and flows around the off-curtain side (in this example, the right side) of the continuous miner (Figure 1). To detonate properly, blasting agents require confinement, a significant booster, charge diameters of 3 inches (7.5 cm) or greater, and charge lengths greater than two-times the charge diameter. Without these conditions, blasting agents will not detonate at full order, leading to a misrepresentation of the gaseous products. A facility for detonating large, confined charges in a controlled volume has been constructed at the Pittsburgh Research Center’s Experimental Mine. The facility consists of a portion of mine entry (once used for full-scale mine explosion research and demonstrations) enclosed between two explosion proof bulkheads. Total volume of the chamber is 9,666 ft (274 m). The chamber is equipped with an air circulating system and is3 3vented using the mine's airflow. Up to 10-pound (4.5-kg) charges can be detonated in the chamber using a variety of confinements. For a typical test, the blasting agent is confined in a 4-inch (10-cm) schedule 80 steel pipe and initiated by a 3-inch (7.5-cm) diameter, 1-inch (2.5-cm) thick Pentolite booster. This combination of confinement and initiation yields a detonation velocity of about 4,000 m/sec for ANFO. This velocity is in line with that measured for blasting in the field. Twenty four 2-inch thick steel plates are suspended around the pipe bomb to stop shrapnel that would otherwise seriously damage the chamber. Following detonation of an explosive in the chamber, a circulating fan is run for about 10 minutes to uniformly mix the chamber atmosphere. Fumes samples are taken out of the chamber through 1/4-inch (0.6-cm) Teflon or polyethylene2tubes for analysis. The fumes are analyzed using bubblers or Vacutainers to collect samples for analysis by the analytical chemistry lab. The technique described here has been employed to determine the fumes produced by the detonation of a variety of ANFO formulations and commercial explosives. This technique may be developed as a standard test to measure fumes produced by blasting agents or may be used to provide data with which to develop a computer model that will reliably predict the expected fumes production based on chemical composition.

The quantity of coal recovered by diamond coring techniques is not sufficient in many instances to make meaningful coking and/or ash fouling tests. Quantities in excess of that obtained by conventional coring techniques, usually in amounts exceeding 500 pounds, has been designated bulk sampling. During the past three years, AMAX Coal Company has utilized five methods of bulk sampling. It was our desire to obtain a bulk sample that was diagnostic of the seam by the most expedient and economical method. From the beginning all of our efforts have been directed to methods which would extract the required coal from slim boreholes which provide quick and inexpensive access to the coal seam, regardless of depth, terrain and accessability. In our efforts and investigation several large diameter cores have been taken from thick coal seams at relatively shallow depths in easily drilled rocks. On the other hand, for deeper thin seams multiple large diameter coring is more expensive and time consuming. It is somewhat less expensive when multiple cores are taken from a single slim borehole utilizing deflection coring, although considerable skill is necessary.

GENERALLY speaking, there is nothing very difficult about taking good micrographs of photogenic thin sections or grains with a petrographic micro-scopecamera setup. However, sometimes it is desired to show some detail that cannot be illustrated satisfactorily by the usual micrographs taken with parallel polarized light, with crossed nicols, or even with two micrographs. A simple procedure giving good results has been used at Battelle Memorial Institute for subjects falling into this classification, and it is believed to be of interest, especially to research people who must sell a point to executives through the medium of well-illustrated reports. The following problem illustrates a typical application: It is desired to photograph a thin section of an iron ore to illustrate the character and association of the iron oxides and the individual quartz crystals. A magnification of 75 dia. is acceptable. A micrograph of the field in question (Fig. I[a]) was taken with parallel polarized light. Due precaution was taken to provide critical illumination, correct exposure, a sharp focus, a good darkroom technique, and other essential conditions. It illustrates correctly the iron oxides, but it fails to show the individual quartz crystals. A micrograph of the identical field (Fig. I[b]) was taken under the same precise conditions, but with crossed nicols. It gives a better idea of the character of the individual quartz crystals but is likely to be misinterpreted unless accompanied by a lengthy descriptive note. This micrograph suggests that the centrally located, large black area is composed entirely of iron oxides. That this is an incorrect interpretation is evident by reexamining the micrograph of Fig. I[a]. The correct interpretation is that the dark area contains quartz crystals oriented with their optical directions parallel to, or nearly parallel to, the vibration directions of the polarizer and analyzer of the microscope. Thus, the executive, or anyone who had not done the work personally, would get no more than a fair interpretation, even if two micrographs were included; and in the interests of both brevity and clarity, one micrograph usually is more desirable. Exactly how many quartz crystals occur in this region cannot be told from the two micrographs, and a printing of the two negatives in register would likewise not show the detail desired. Thus, it is evident that some subjects cannot be satisfactorily illustrated by the usual procedures. In photographing Fig. is the light was subdued and, during the entire exposure of 75 sec., the analyzer nicol was rotated uniformly in its mounting from a crossed position to 45° uncrossed position to introduce the desired amount of contrast in the various individual quartz crystals. The true reproduction of the character and association of the iron oxides, and the additional structure and detail in the quartz areas, is apparent. It might be

The U.S. Geological Survey, in support of underground testing of nuclear explosives, has developed a technique (Dudley, 1910) to predict the inflow of ground water to large underground chambers that are cylindrical in shape. By treating the chamber as a large-diameter well pumped at constant drawdown, the nonsteady discharge can be computed by the method of Hantush (1961) for analyzing flowing wells under leaky artesian conditions. In mining applications, whether for mineral recovery or for nuclear testing, the most serious departure from the conditions of Hantush's model results from the gradual enlargement of the opening under drained conditions. Inherent in the analytical technique is that the "well" is fully completed at the time that dewatering begins. Because safety is the prime concern, however, initial pumping systems or personnel evacuation procedures must be designed to handle the greatest conceivable inflow. DEFINITIONS Because somewhat different meanings are attached to similar words in different technical fields, the U.S. Geological Survey definitions (Lohman, 1970) of several hydrologic terms used in this report are given below. An aquifer is a formation, group of formations, or part of a formation that contains sufficient saturated permeable material to yield significant quantities of water to wells, and springs. A confining bed is a body of material lying stratigraphically adjacent to one or more aquifers and having a hydraulic conductivity distinctly lower than that of the aquifer. "IN FIELD WORK in the Cape Breton Highlands, which are heavily covered with vegetation, it is necessary to run traverses along the valleys of small brooks. We encountered difficulty in closing such traverses, and the following technique was developed to solve this problem. It has been tested in the field for four seasons by several people, and found to be simple, efficient and more accurate than any other compass-and-pace system of which we are aware. So far as we can find, the technique has not been described previously. It may be of use to others.The Cape Breton Highlands of Nova Scotia consist of hills of old intrusive and metamorphosed sedimentary rocks protruding up to 1,000 feet above the general level of the younger sediments which underlie the valleys. The flat hill-tops are the remnants of a plateau; drainage off the edge of this plateau has produced many small steep brooks. They occupy valleys which are up to 800 feet deep, and V-shaped in cross section, with steep sides covered by mixed conifers and hardwoods. The stream at the bottom is rarely more than a few feet wide, with a negligible meander belt, but with many bends, rapids and falls. Visibility along the stream, in consequence, is rarely more than a few hundred feet, and in many places much less.It was found impractical to map the streams by the method of meander lines, as described in many standard surveying texts and hand-books. The limited visibility, and the numerous bends of the brooks, necessitated many corners. Every corner introduces errors. To 'close' a survey with 40 or 50 such corners proved either very time-consuming or impossible. In most cases, however, the general direction of a valley may be obtained from an aerial photograph, or by direct observation, and this became the basis of the method adopted."

Frothers play major roles in flotation through interaction at the air/water interface. A method of determining frother adsorption density (coverage), i.e., the number of molecules per unit of interfacial area of bubble surface, is introduced. The technique is based on mass balancing the frother around a continuously operated bubble column. The mass balance requires collection of bubbles before they burst. "A method of sampling and presenting bubbles for imaging for use in full-size flotation cells is described. The device (bubble viewer) comprises a tube attached to a sealed glass viewing chamber. The assembly is first filled with frother-containing water (to prevent coalescence) and the tube immersed at the desired location below the froth. For a few minutes bubbles are collected in the viewer free from slurry and are readily imaged. To reduce bubble overlap and the problem of defining the plane of view, the viewing chamber has a sloped side. Bubbles rise, encounter this slope, spread into a single plane and slide up. This simple expedient virtually eliminates overlap and provides an unambiguous focus plane - the underside of the sloped glass. The bubble image is captured and processed to give size data. The bubble viewer has been employed at several concentrators on different types of flotation cells. Examples of the images are given. The impact of position in the cell and the effect of changing gas rate on bubble size are illustrated. This technique provides a sensitive measure of the effects of process variables on bubble size.INTRODUCTIONDespite the extensive use of flotation in the mineral processing industry, the methodology employed for cell design is largely based on empirical rules rather than on first principles. One of the main reasons for this state of affairs is that the local flow structures encountered in industrial-scale machines are very complex. These flow structures are difficult to simulate under the controlled conditions of the laboratory and the difficulty to solve the mathematical models that treat the randomness of such flows also mean theoretical treatment is limited. Understanding flotation cell hydrodynamics requires reliable data, which involves the implementation of measurement techniques capable of performing both at the laboratory- and the industrial-scale, In addition, it is desirable that such techniques are amenable to automation to reduce extensive manual intervention in the data collection process."

Large mining companies use a number of sophisticated analytical techniques for introducing the element of risk into the valuation of mineral reserve sites. These methods include, but are not limited to, sensitivity analysis, computer simulation, conditional probability, and portfolio theory. Such techniques enable the managements of these large companies to have an awareness of the many possible ramifications of their investment decisions. On the other hand, small mining companies and individuals in the mining business, due to limited financial and technical resources, still rely primarily on single point estimates of the value of mineral reserves. These small miners introduce the aspect of risk only through the application of an appropriate "speculative" discount rate. This paper illustrates the application of a technique for the introduction of risk into investment analysis. The method appears to be most suitable for use by small mining companies and individuals contemplating a large investment in a new mineral reserve site.

"The number of underground mines replacing diesel by battery powered mobile equipment is growing worldwide. The latter produces locally zero emissions and less heat, improving air quality in the working areas, and can potentially reduce energy costs due to lower ventilation requirements and in the face of higher fuel prices. However, there is a lack of systematic approaches to evaluate the potential economic benefit of switching from diesel mobile technologies to electric ones. This paper presents a method to answer the question of whether a mine with known operating conditions should invest in battery-powered electric equipment to reduce its total costs. Furthermore, this method provides the optimal number of electric and diesel equipment in relationship with their impact on the ventilation system and the total costs of running the mine from the energy perspective. A case study of an underground mine in Northern Ontario (Canada) is presented to validate the method proposed. The scenarios studied include the specific climatic conditions of the region, and the possibility to use heat recovery for the ventilation system. Overall, results show that the use of electric mobile plants is cost competitive, especially so when electricity cost can be lowered through load-shedding strategies.INTRODUCTIONOf the multiple advantages of using electrical vehicles (EV) underground in mining, the potential increase in air quality and comfort is the most significant (Paraszczak, Svedlund, Fytas, and Laflamme, 2014). Until recently, fully battery-powered electrical underground heavy duty machinery (i.e., loaders or trucks) were not available, so that tethered and trolley assisted vehicles were the only electric alternatives to diesel powered vehicles (Bétournay et al., 2011). Today, several commercial battery-based alternatives are available (General Electric Fairchild, 2015; RDH Mining Equipment, 2015; Paraszczak et al., 2014). Operational details can be found in Ewing (2015). The main battery technology used (Lithium Iron Phosphate, LiFePO4, or LFP) was already anticipated in Bétournay et al. (2011) as a good candidate for these types of vehicles. More details on these batteries, along with state of the art and future perspectives can be found in Zubi, Dufo-López, Carvalho, and Pasaoglu, (2018)."

A techno-economic assessment for the recovery of several elements from seawater is presented. Gold recovery has been used as an illustration for the economic evaluation of several processes. Current technology does not present any economically viable alternative to recover gold from seawater because its concentration is several magnitudes too low. However, with the increasingly larger availability of concentrated seawater, mainly from desalination and other processes, coupled with advances in technology, especially genetically modified specific microorganisms, may make the recovery of gold and other desired elements from seawater a reality in the near future.

"SummaryBritish Petroleum plc is developing a new gold recovery process known as coal gold agglomeration (CGA) for the recovery of gold from its ores. Liberated gold grains are recovered with high efficiency by adhering to agglomerates of coal and oil. The process is simple, can recover gold grains down to very fine sizes, avoids the large scale use of cyanide and provides the industry with an important new process option.A technical appraisal of the process has been performed on an extensive range of gold bearing materials. Ore types have been identified from which high gold recoveries can be achieved. A spreadsheet based computer program has been used to estimate the preliminary capital and operating costs of the process. Comparison with established gold production costs shows that the process costs of CGA, on the appropriate ore types, are potentially very attractive, which will enable economic treatment of lower grade ores than is currently possible using conventional cyanidation. Treatment of known placer deposits or gravity concentration plant tailings may be the most rapid means of demonstrating the process at a commercial scale prior to more widespread applications.1. INTRODUCTIONWestern world gold production for the 1980s has shown rapid growth sustained by a demand for gold at a favourable price (Fig. 1). Heap leaching and CIP/CIL operations have been responsible for the major part of new production during the 1970s and 1980s with present overall production costs averaging US$200/oz in Canada, USA and Australia and US$265/oz in South Africa [l]. A great deal of research and process development effort in the 1980s has been towards the treatment of refractory ores. Operating costs for the economic processing of these ore types by currently available routes are around US$300/oz [2]."

As the high-grade copper deposits in the world become depleted, there is an increasing focus on developing lower-grade ores which contain problematic impurities such as arsenic. Indeed, many high-arsenic ore bodies remain undeveloped because of their high arsenic levels. Separation of arsenic from copper at the beneficiation stage is difficult using the current processing techniques and invariably copper concentrates produced from these ores contain high arsenic levels, sometimes so high as to make them unacceptable to copper smelters. New, sustainable approaches are needed to allow development of high-arsenic copper ores while at the same time minimizing arsenic dispersion into the biosphere. The most promising route for separating arsenic from copper at the flotation stage centers on the use of pulp potential control. In recent years CSIRO has demonstrated at laboratory scale, for a number of high-arsenic copper ores, that crude flotation separation between arsenic-bearing minerals and copper-bearing minerals can be made. The differences in specific minerals responses to changes in pulp potential and pulp pH are exploited for this separation. Such separations nominally produce a low-arsenic high-copper concentrate and a low-copper high-arsenic concentrate. The former can be smelted without penalty, while the latter requires further treatment to capture and stabilize the arsenic and to recover the residual copper. Consideration has now been given to treatment options for the high-arsenic low-copper product. A pyrometallurgical option, involving a low temperature roast to selectively fume off the arsenic and leave a high-copper calcine, coupled with an arsenic stabilization step, has been demonstrated in the laboratory, and a preliminary techno-economic evaluation shows the process to be economically favorable. These results were recently published. CSIRO has now investigated an alternate hydrometallurgical option, involving atmospheric alkaline sulphide leaching of the high-arsenic product, where the arsenic is selectively dissolved leaving a copper-rich leach residue. The leaching testwork was carried at on the same high-arsenic low-copper material used in the roasting studies, enabling a techno-economic comparison of the alternate roasting and leaching treatment options to be made. The alkaline leaching work is briefly described and the results of the process option comparison presented and discussed. Slag and by-products of metallurgy bear valuable components and their processing raises an in-creasing interest. Coke and iron have to be separated and other components have to be depressed, in order to obtain sellable high quality copper concentrates. Use of classical mineral processing technologies, such as magnetic separation, sulphidization, hydrometallurgy, etc. yields copper concentrates with grade of 4%~6% Cu. Copper is lost in tailings and the whole technological cycle is low profitable. Technology proposed applies an electrochemical treatment of the industrial water entering the flotation cycle. Iron and iron compounds that do not bear Cu, coke and gangue materials are depressed during the copper flotation. Copper concentrate of grade of 9.8%~10% Cu is obtained at simultaneous increase of Ag recovery by 8%~10%. As a result company profitableness is increased. Technology proposed is easy to implement, it does not require changes in the existing technology flow-sheet, and additional investment is low. The flotation process can be aided by a specially developed system for real-time analysis of the obtained copper concentrate which allows in-time corrections in the flotation parameters and entire process control. Applied flotation schemes, technological parameters and results obtained are described.

Based on lab and pilot-plant tests to recover gold, silver and lead of a Russian deposit, a collective and flotation concentration flow sheet with lead and sulfide concentrates was proposed. The type of the deposit is gold-sulfide-quartz-bearing. The recovery of gold, silver, and lead to a lead concentrate was 47.4%, 68.1% and 70.7%, respectively. The grade of gold and silver grade was 170 g/t and 372 g/t, respectively. The mass percent of lead, zinc and arsenic mass percent was 41.7%, 0.34% and 0.63%, respectively. The recovery of gold and silver recovery to a sulfide concentrate was 50.1% and 28.8% at the grade of gold 20.5 g/t and silver 66.2 g/t. Sulfide concentrate with arsenic mass percent ~3% was biooxidised followed by CIL and obtaining metal at the site as well as zinc concentrate from bioleaching solutions with zinc mass percent 45% at its 64% recovery. The total gold and silver recovery using a developed technology with the account of their treatment at a polymetallic plant was 92.2% and 93.7%, respectively.

To improve gold recovery from preg-robbing carbonaceous ores a technology including gravity, flotation, recleaning of the flotation concentrate, intensive cyanidation of the gravity concentrate and carbon-in-leach (CIL) process for intensive cyanidation tailings and the recleaned concentrate was developed. The final flotation tailings are shipped to tailings disposal. Total gold recovery by the proposed technology from the ore with the head grade of 0.8 g/t was 83.9%. The gold loading onto the activated carbon from CIL process was 6.5 g/kg.

Tests for the development of a metals recovery technology from samples of a Russian gold-bismuth deposit were carried out. Gold, silver and bismuth assay reported 5.6 g/t, 3.0 g/t and 0.08 per cent, respectively. Two flow sheet options were pilot plant tested: gravity/cyanidation of gravity tailings with subsequent flotation of cyanidation/carbon-in-pulp (CIP) tailings, and gravity/flotation concentration with cyanidation/CIP of concentrates. Option 1 results showed lower gold, silver and bismuth recoveries (81.3 per cent Au, 55 per cent Ag and 74.0 per cent Bi) due to low flotation efficiency for cyanidation tailings. Therefore, a flow sheet involving gravity/flotation concentration to produce bismuth-gold concentrates (0.8 per cent Bi) with subsequent cyanidation/CIP was recommended. Gold, silver and bismuth recoveries obtained by this method to the combined gravity/flotation concentrate were 90.2 per cent Au, 83.3 per cent Ag and 80.2 per cent Bi of the ore, respectively. Overall gold, silver and bismuth recoveries were 83.0 per cent Au, 40.5 per cent Ag and 80.2 per cent Bi, respectively. Gold and silver recoveries to the cathode precipitate were 92 per cent Au and 48.6 per cent Ag (per operation). Reagents consumed for flotation were 0.1 kg lead acetate/t ore, 0.4 kg butyl xanthate/t ore, 0.2 kg T-80 frother/t ore, 0.02 kg sodium hexametaphosphate/t ore, 0.15 kg copper sulfate/t ore. Reagents consumption for cyanidation was 0.42 - 0.48 kg NaCN/t ore and 0.2 kg CaO/t ore. It was recommended to deliver bismuth concentrates after hydrometallurgical treatment to a smelter. Overall bismuth recovery including bismuth recovery achieved by pyrometallurgy was 60.0 per cent. However, it was obvious that delivery of bismuth concentrates to a smelter and their commercial treatment would be very expensive due to relatively high mass pull of bismuth concentrates (7.6 per cent of the ore weight). For this reason, thiourea leaching and hydrochloric acid leaching with subsequent cyanidation/CIP were investigated as alternatives to cyanide leaching. These two alternatives were proposed to enable optimal recovery of valuable metals from concentrates on-site. Recoveries obtained by thiourea leaching were 91.2 per cent Au, 90.5 - 91.9 per cent Bi and 77.0 - 78.1 per cent Ag. However, that method required considerable capital and operating costs. As an alternative, hydrochloric acid leaching with subsequent cyanidation was investigated. Test results showed improved gold, bismuth and silver recoveries, which were 94 - 95.9 Au per cent, 94 - 96 Bi per cent and 76 - 78 Ag per cent, respectively. Hydrochloric acid consumption was 100 kg/t concentrate or 7.6 kg/t ore. Current efficiency during electrowinning was about eight to 12 per cent. A recommended flow sheet involving hydrochloric acid leaching of concentrates, electrowinning of bismuth from solutions, recycling solutions after electrowinning and cyanidation of hydrochloric acid leaching cakes is described. Overall recoveries achieved by the proposed flow sheet were as follows: 84.8 - 86.5 Au per cent, 75.8 - 76.9 Bi per cent and 63.2 - 64.9 Ag per cent. Based on results from these tests, initial data for a bankable feasibility study and plant designing were developed.

"In mid-1986, a world-class mining enterprise was created in Highland Valley, British Columbia, bringing together the copper mining operations of Lomex and Cominco . In 1988, Highmont joined the new partnership.Highland Valley Copper is the largest copper mine in North America in terms of both tonnage mined and tonnage milled, and it is one of the largest in the world. Due to its relatively low ore grade its production of copper in concentrate ranks about ninth in the Western World.The current eighteen year mine plan is based on ore reserves of 761 million tonnes. The daily milling rate is 133 000 tonnes. At the end of mine life, a total area of approximately 6500 hectares will have been disturbed. At this time, vegetation has been established on about 600 hectares and while work will be done during the operating years, it will not be until the end of mine life, about 2008, that the last half of the land can be reclaimed and revegetated.Once final reclamation has been accomplished, Highland Valley Copper will have completed its "" temporary use of the land"". In the meantime, about 1250people have had employment for about 50 000 man years, at wages ranking among the best in Canada.IntroductionTo provide and sustain our way of life, we need steel, copper, aluminum, zinc and many other minerals.To sustain mining, we must have adequate ore reserves and replacement of reserves as they are mined. Each year the search becomes more difficult as more of the Earth's surface is investigated and depo sits are mined. This calls for aggressive and sustained efforts.In British Columbia, past and present mining activities have disturbed less than one-tenth of one per cent of the land.With today’s technology, mining operations can be substantially reclaimed and thus complete the cycle of ""A Temporary Use of the Land""."

In the presentation, the development and new applications of the jet grouting technique in the North America are briefly introduced at first and followed by the outline and advantages of Jet Grouting. Several recent projects for jet grouting are presented in which the applications to underpinning and excavation support, foundation, groundwater barrier and seismic stabilization are briefly discussed.
