"Editor’s note: Douglas B. Silver, Portfolio Manager, Orion Resource Partners, was the keynote speaker at the 2017 SME Annual Conference & Expo in Denver, CO on Feb. 19, 2017. At that time the financial markets were on the verge of collapse and my presentation described the issues. Unfortunately I was correct, and global markets went into a steep nosedive, creating the largest economic downturn since the Great Depression.In hindsight, there were plenty of signs that this was coming. The Supercycle had created massive new wealth. This wealth was largely invested in the United States due to the country’s political stability and credit worthiness. In 2004, the large investment banks convinced the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) to allow them to triple their borrowing leverage ratios. This made the banks more vulnerable to market volatility. The banks then lent money to NINJAS - people with no income, no job and no assets. Even worse was the fact that these unqualified home owners used adjusted-rate mortgages (ARMs) which they, of course, intended to refinance prior to interest rates rising. These mortgages were then bundled up by the banks and sold to investors as “safe” investment products. The money flowed into these products because the rating agencies gave these instruments high marks. These same agencies earned their fees from the very same banks seeking high ratings. (No conflict there). Private debt exploded and peaked out in 2008.These mortgage products were sold in an unregulated shadow banking system and the ARMs came due. Toxic mortgage default rates skyrocketed and the mortgage-backed securities collapsed in value. This house of cards had a negative feedback loop that accelerated the market crash and resulted in more than $1.5 trillion being lost in the securitization sector, a 47 percent decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, foreclosure rates skyrocketing and housing prices collapsing. The financial markets were in a nosedive."

The ninth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the SME Annual Conference & Expo in Minneapolis, MN. A total of 33 students presented their work at the contest. The competition began in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes. The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the contest. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and, as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. As in past years, there are separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates, and the prizes are designated accordingly. At the graduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third through seventh $200 each, and all others $125 each. At the undergraduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third place $250, and all others $125 each.

Innovation and Business Skills Australia (IBSA) commissioned The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to undertake a study into how the role of AustraliaÆs senior managers is likely to change between now and 2020 and to identify the skills and attributes that will be needed to respond to those changes. This report builds on a previous study prepared by BCG in the early 1990s for the Industry Taskforce on Leadership and Management Skills (Karpin Committee), which provided a snapshot of the Senior Manager in 2010. The following powerpoint slides summarise the 2020 Vision û The Manager of the 21st Century û outlining how the role of AustraliaÆs senior managers is likely to change between now and 2020 and to identify the skills and attributes that will be needed to respond to those changes. The presentation is summed up in the following quote from Jon Nicholson û Senior Vice President of BCG: We believe that to succeed in the years up to 2020, executives will need to master a range of hard and soft skills. Amongst other things, they will require to manage multi-generaional teams, the creativity to measure staff performance on outputs rather than inputs, and a high degree of technical and functional expertise in addition to their general management credentials. The Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration held the first MPD Student Video Contest during the spring of 2021. The event showcased the work of 18 graduate and undergraduate students from several U.S. and international institutions. The contest began in January when students submitted a onepage abstract for judging. Over the next several months, they developed a three-minute video that further explained their research findings. Both the abstract and video were evaluated by a panel of judges, and the top-placing participant was recognized at an MPD virtual event held on June 10.

The Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration held the 12th MPD Student Poster Contest on March 2, 2022, during the MINEXCHANGE 2022 SME Annual Conference & Expo. The event showcased the work of 32 graduate and undergraduate students from U.S. and international institutions. The contest began in January when the students submitted one‐page abstracts for judging. In February, they prepared and presented posters that explained their research, and each student had five minutes to explain their research to a panel of judges during the conference. Recognizing the students’ efforts in working hard on their research topics and setting aside time to complete the necessary steps to enter the poster contest, the MPD provides monetary rewards to all participants. For graduate students, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, and third through seventh places $200 each, and for undergraduate students, first place receives $1,000 and second place $500. The main authors of nonplacing entries receive $125 each. Participation in the contest includes a free ticket to the MPD Luncheon, where the winners are announced.

This old district is a major zinc and lead source and minor copper and barite source. Ores are chiefly in the Galena Dolomite and in limestones and dolomites of the Decorah and Platteville Formations, all of Middle Ordovician age. Locally, deposits have been mined from Lower Ordovician dolomites and Upper Cambrian sandstones. Small deposits of lead, zinc, and iron sulfides have been found in Upper Ordovician Maquoketa Shale and in Lower and Middle Silurian Edgewood, Kankakee, and Hopkinton Formations. No post-Precambrian igneous rocks are known in the region, and the granitic and metasedimentary Precambrian basement rocks unconformably underlie the district at depths of 1500 to 2000 feet. The strata are gently flexed and faulted, probably largely the result of gentle compressive and rotational adjustments in the underlying crystalline basement, especially along lineaments between basement blocks. Folds of three orders ·of magnitude are recognized, and many related reverse, strike-slip, and normal faults of small to moderate displacements are present. Zinc-lead deposits are commonly linear, arcuate, or elliptical in plan. Most ore occurs as vein fillings in fractures and as breccia fillings and lining vugs, but some is in bedded replacements and impregnations of wall rocks. The ore is in shears, small reverse and bedding- plant faults, joints, and solution-slump structures related to intermediate and small folds. The main primary minerals in their general sequence of deposition are quartz, illite, dolomite, pyrite, marcasite, cobaltite(?), sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, millerite, barite, and calcite. Wall-rock alterations include solution of the carbonate rocks, silicification, dolomitization, clay alteration, and sanded dolomite. Oxygenisotope, trace-element, lead-isotope, and sphalerite- stratigraphy studies are in progress. Fluid inclusions in sulfide and gangue minerals are filled with concentrated brines at 120° to 40°C. Sulfides are directly replaced by supergene minerals above the water table at 50 to 100 feet in depth. In this relatively cool climate and limestone environment, smithsonite is in pseudomorphs after sphalerite; solution transport and redeposition of supergene minerals are rare. Ore genesis is postulated by rising hot-water solutions-a mixture of heated connate, magmatic, and meteoric waters.

The challenge facing the engineering provider is to calculate throughput rates when faced with disparate specific energies calculated by different testing methodologies. Typically, an ownerÆs team would expect that the throughput calculations be checked using more than one method, therefore it is inevitable that there will be differences, based on which methodology is used. This engineering challenge is exacerbated by the continuing evolution of contemporary circuit configurations such as two stage pebble crushing with or without high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) as the second stage, or second stage pebble crusher product reporting to the ball milling circuit, etc.This paper is a companion to the paper first presented at SAG 2011, which showed that the Bond Indices are an excellent tool for estimating the specific energy requirements for semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills in single-stage SAG milling (SSS) circuits, SAG and ball mill circuits (SAB) or SAG and ball mill circuits with pebble crushers (SABC). This paper presents how the Bond Indices have been used to calculate ball mill specific energies, and therefore throughput rates, for SAG mill based circuits. Once the ball milling specific energy is known, tower mill and vertimill energy requirements can also be calculated. This paper looks at the past, present and not too distant future of grinding mill relining.Since the adoption of autogenous grinding (AG) mills and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills as the primary ore reducing devices in the comminution circuit, plant shutdown frequency and duration has largely been driven by the liner maintenance requirements of these mills.The past 30 years have seen the introduction of many technologies to reduce relining times and frequencies. Advanced relining systems have been developed which include single and twin Mill Relining Machines, capable of placing large (up to 8000 kg) liners, high energy recoilless THUNDERBOLT Hammers, and high capacity Feed Chute Transporters. Despite these advances, today many of the hazards associated with mill relining remain and reline times still vary considerably between mine sites. A sophisticated discrete event simulation program, designed to analyse the mill relining process, has revealed the dominant influences on reline times of crew performance and of the need for safe access to larger segments of the mill.A new generation of advanced and semi-automated technologies is currently being tested that will address these remaining challenges. The copper deposit at White Pine, Michigan, from which a little more than 5 per cent of United States primary copper currently is produced, is a large stratiform orebody, 4 to 25 feet thick and several miles across. The present ore column, containing about 1.2 per cent copper as chalcocite and native copper, is confined to the basal beds of the Nonesuch Shale. This upper Keweenawan (Upper Precambrian) formation is a distinctive gray siltstone unit, about 600 feet thick, overlying and overlain by thick red-bed sequences. All these rocks contain abundant volcanic debris, but the latest known igneous activity within 50 miles antedated the Nonesuch Shale. The rocks are unmetamorphosed and only moderately deformed, mainly by tilting and faults. Pyrite, presumably syngenetic, is the only prominent sulfide throughout most of the Nonesuch Shale. The basal beds of the formation, however, contain disseminated copper minerals instead of pyrite and constitute the cupriferous zone. On a regional scale, the top of the cupriferous zone cuts across bedding, and ranges from an inch or so above the base of the formation in some areas to more than 50 feet in others. However, within the cupriferous zone the distribution of copper shows remarkable stratigraphic control. Certain beds are copper-rich compared to the beds that lie between them and the differences persist throughout the White Pine region. Several darkgray thinly laminated beds in the lower 10 to 25 feet of the Nonesuch Shale are rich enough and sufficiently close enough together to constitute a mineable thickness where they lie within the cupriferous zone. Pyrite is the characteristic sulfide of the Nonesuch Shale as a whole. The principal sulfide mineral of the cupriferous zone at the base of the formation is chalcocite. The succession of minerals outward and upward from the center of the cupriferous zone is native copper-chalcocite-bornite-chalcopyrite- pyrite. The bornite and chalcopyrite are confined to a narrow fringe at the margin of the cupriferous zone. This pattern of mineral zones is believed to represent reaction between syngenetic pyrite and introduced copper. The main copper mineralization is independent of structure and apparently antedates deformation. Details of the geometry of the cupriferous zone indicate the possibility that copper was introduced from the underlying sandstone prior to lithification. The source of the mineralizing solutions and their copper is not known.

The natural iron ores of the Lake Superior Region in the United States are being replaced by iron-ore concentrates produced from magnetite- or hematite-rich horizons in the Precambrian cherty iron formations. The production of natural ores will soon be less than one-half of the total ore shipped annually. The tonnage of natural ore produced will continue to decline until it is a minor percentage of the ore shipped. The natural ores include (1) soft ore, (2) hard ore, ( 3) conglomerate ore and ( 4) siliceous ore. The soft ores are the important ore type and are sometimes termed "Lake Superior type ore". These ores are in situ deposits of hematite and limonite formed by the leaching of silica and other gangue materials in the iron formations. The leaching is believed to have been done by downward moving surface waters. In deep ore deposits, generally over 1000 feet below the present surface, circulation and leaching action may have been assisted by hydrothermal activity. Hard ore deposits occur on the Vermilion and Marquette ranges where hematite or magnetite has replaced the silica (and possibly some silicates) in cherty iron formation. These ores commonly occur in structural situations favorable for the movement of hydrothermal waters. The ores are believed to be the result of hydrothermal action with iron, possibly from the iron formation, transported by hydrothermal waters to areas favorable for the replacement of silica by iron oxides. Certain stratigraphic horizons of the Lake Superior Precambrian cherty iron formations contain sufficient iron as magnetite or hematite, with a grain size and texture that will give adequate mineral liberation, to yield an ore-quality product after grinding and concentration. The magnetite-rich deposits are termed magnetite taconites. These ores occur on the Mesabi, Gogebic, and Marquette ranges. Magnetite taconite ores are unenriched cherty iron formation and are the result of the sedimentary deposition of the iron formation and the metamorphic history of the rock. The commercial quality hematite-rich iron formations in Michigan are termed jasper ores. The jasper ores are being mined on the Marquette and Menominee ranges. These ores are composed of specular or granular hematite associated with quartz and iron silicates. The jasper ores appear to be recrystallized iron formations in which iron, prior to recrystallization, occurred as hematite.

The presentation describes new data concerning the age of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) hydrothermal fields. The collection of massive sulfides recovered from six hydrothermal fields has been dated using the 230Th/U method. The range of the data obtained is rather wide: from 2.2 up to 65.1 thousand years BP. Three stages of hydrothermal activity were detected for this 65 Kyr period of geological evolution: modern (0 -5), 20-25 and 58–65 thousand BP (Figure 1). This conclusion was confirmed by dating the associated metalliferous sediment layers which also indicate the hydrothermal events led to the formation of sulfide mineralization. There is a correlation between the age and size of massive sulfide deposits: older deposits are larger (Table 1). This and other applications of obtained data will be discussed in presentation.

The Marquette District of Central Northern Michigan is the oldest of the Lake Superior iron districts with a mining history dating from 1852 up to the present. The total production of all types of ore through 1965 was 338,120, 146 long tons. Emphasis up to the 1950's was on mining the direct shipping ores; however, demands for higher-grade and better-structured ores in the last decade has resulted in a complete shift in emphasis to beneficiating the lowgrade Negaunee Iron-formation to produce high-grade iron ore pellets. The Precambrian sediments of the Marquette Range have been correlated with the Animikie Series of the Thunder Bay District, Ontario, and are contained in a westward plunging synclinorium that is approximately 3 3 miles in length and 3 to 6 miles in width. -The rock unit of major economic importance is the Negaunee Iron-formation that reaches a thickness of 2500 feet near the City of Negaunee. The primary iron content of the Negaunee Iron-formation averages 26 per cent, whereas the altered iron-formation approximates 31 per cent. The Negaunee Iron-formation has been divided into three principal types: diagenetic, oxidized, and metamorphic. The ores produced to date fall into four categories: high-grade soft ores, high-grade hard ores, siliceous ores, and concentrates and agglomerates (pellets). The soft ores generally are found in synclines and in fault-trough structures, bounded by mafic dikes along at least one side, and are mainly found in the basal portion of the Negaunee. In contrast, the hard ores occur in the uppermost portion of the Negaunee and are controlled by structural features such as folds, faults, and dikes. Iron-formation that has undergone diagenetic and metamorphic alteration makes up the main beneficiating ore types. Studies on the Negaunee Iron-formation have played an important role in the formulation of many of the theories on the origin of the Precambrian iron-formations.

The Ameristar Casino expansion project included the design and construction of a 25-story hotel and 9-story parking structure expansion. The site is located in a floodplain on the banks of the Missouri River in Saint Charles, Missouri, where the underlying soils are potentially liquefiable. The geotechnical engineer performed subsurface exploration and analysis, which included site-specific seismic response and liquefaction, and provided geotechnical design recommendations. In the event of an earthquake, post-liquefaction settlement was calculated to be approximately 14 inches. Additional project constraints included wetlands protection, construction adjacent to the existing facility, flood protection and river bank stability. Because of the liquefaction issue, the geotechnical engineer consulted with a specialty geotechnical contractor on ground improvement methods. This consultation led to a proposal to eliminate deep foundations from the design and support the structures on shallow and mat foundations. The geotechnical engineer assisted the design team with foundation design analysis and value engineering assessments. Together with the project team, the geotechnical engineer used the data to evaluate foundation options and construction methods to overcome the site challenges and concluded that ground improvement was the optimum course of action. Because of the nature of the site constraints, a number of ground improvement methods were needed. The geotechnical engineer evaluated the methods proposed by the geotechnical contractor and provided the technical specifications for the ground improvement bid package, which included vibro-compaction, compaction grouting and micropiles. The ground improvement allowed for the use of shallow foundations (mat and spread footings), which provided the client with significant time and cost savings over the deep foundation alternatives.

"The last 25 years have seen tremendous economic pressure placed upon the base metal processor. Industry has responded with technological innovations that have contributed to significant reductions in capital and operating costs. Major changes in processing machinery and philosophy are highlighted for the main unit operations of a base metal mill. Changes in our attitudes on what is environmentally acceptable are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONNewton's law of motion paraphrased states that nothing will change unless there is a pressure to do so.Aase metal processing as a primary commodity related industry has been under severe economic pressure over the last 25 years. This has been brought on by over capacity from new operations in the L.D.C. 's, through material substitution in a host of traditional base metal applications and generally reduced world-wide economic activity. In addition to shrinking markets our collective environmental consciousness has raised effluent standards and workplace hygiene and the employee's as well as government's economic expectations of how much ought to be derived from ''nature's riches''.Industry has responded with technological changes which, it was hoped, would counteract the cost squeeze in which it found itself.I would like to briefly enumerate the major changes, as I see them, that have taken place in the main unit operations that form the normal processing chain for base metals.While the following paper will mention several brands of products, I would like to emphasize that these are the ones that I am most familiar with and is not to say that they are the only manufacturers which have contributed to changes. In fact it ls fair to say that all makers of mining and processing equipment have made improvements to their products, to a greater or lesser degree; they have had to, to still he in business in 1986."

"Froth flotation is the most widely used and economic means of concentrating metal sulfide ores such as those containing copper, lead, zinc, nickel, molybdenum, and pyrite. Also recoverable are other metal species that are often associated with sulfide ores such as cobalt, platinum, gold, silver, etc. Most of the initial developments made with the process of froth flotation in the early 20th century were based on the processing of metal sulfide ores. It is the relative technical and economic ease of floating metal sulfide minerals with small amounts of appropriate frothers and sulfur containing (thio) collectors that has been a major economic driving force behind the rapid expansion in the supply of metals such as copper, lead, zinc, and nickel that has occurred in the world's economy in the last 50 years. This author estimates that 1.6 billion tons of sulfide ores are processed each year (1980) in the free world based on the froth flotation process.While there has been a tendency for the quality of metal sulfide ores in any one geographic location to deteriorate over time due to mining intensity, the overall global supply of sulfide minerals is still very large. Thus, the physical supply side of sulfide ore concentrates has not been under strong technology improvement pressure with increasing metal demands. Part of this is due to the ability of capital to consistently move to new geographic locations having suitable grade sulfide ores. In these moves, the actual froth flotation technology used (including collector chemicals) has had to change little. As an illustration of this trend, of the approximately 80,000 metric tons of thio collectors used commercially (1980) in the free world, almost 98% were known and manufactured in some form 25 years ago (1). This is clearly not typical of reagent development in other process related industries. In addition, the industrial scale practice of froth flotation applied to sulfide ores has proceeded since the 1920 s with often little direct (predictive) scientific explanation due to the extreme complexity of the flotation process. Empirical testing has been a mainstay of industrial flotation reagent development and use. Even today there is often strong disagreement between researchers as to the mechanisms of chemical flotation practices that have been performed successfully at an industrial scale for many years."

This paper recognises the 25th year of the Morgantown International Ground Control in Mining Conference, by offering a twenty five year review of ground control in the Australian mining industry ? primarily in underground coal. The paper provides an overview of the developments in ground control design methodologies, practices and products. It not only summarises what has been done, but attempts to highlight at least some of the major issues, significant developments, controversies and areas of contention, plus some of the continuing gaps in our understanding or capabilities as we go forward into the next 25 years. Some of the issues included are in relation to: the development of the high strength bolt and cable reinforcement practices widely adopted today and the contrast between stiff and soft systems; a focus on local detail, at the expense of understanding regional stability concerns; dramatic improvements in the use of, and systems available for underground geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring; some of the ground control management trends, including occupational health and safety concerns, availability of suitably trained staff and legislative requirements; the opposing approaches of the empiricists versus the numerical modellers ? is there some middle ground?

"In 25 years, processing of tar sand progressed from two small pilot plants to two major commercial operations owned by Syncrude and Suncor. These plants mine tar sand and extract the bitumen which is then converted into a synthetic crude oil. Considerable research on extraction of bitumen from tar sand has been undertaken by these two companies as well as other major oil producing companies, private individuals, universities and the federal and provincial governments. These studies have produced a number of alternate processing schemes which have yet to be commercialized. The producing companies are focusing their efforts on achieving increased processing efficiency, which includes improved bitumen recovery, reduced unit cost, energy conservation, and equipment reliability. In this review, the Syncrude process and examples of new process developments will be briefly described. IntroductionTwenty-five years ago, tar sand processing was limited to two pilot plants owned by Cities Service Athabasca Ltd., and Great Canadian Oil Sands. Earnest Manning was Premier of Alberta and was inviting proposals for the construction of a commercial tar sands plant. The invitations called for a much larger operation than those which had been undertaken in the past. All of the previous attempts at commercial operations up to 1960's had failed, largely because of a poor technical understanding of the process requirements, lack of suitable equipment, and lack of adequate capital. The previous record was not good. The pending new large scale plant was based on improved but not proven technology and equipment, which were developed from the pilot plant studies. In addition, the surplus of conventional oil in Alberta and low world oil prices were factors reducing the need for such a plant."

"Twenty-five years ago, there were about thirty-two gold mines operating in Canada; nine of these have been in continuous operation since then and are still operating. Three of these are part of the Dome Group. Operations of these three and of the newer mines in the Group are referred to in discussing process development over the last twenty-five years.Of the Dome Mines Group, Dome Mines Limited, Sigma Mines (Quebec) Limited, Campbell Red Lake Mines Limited, Detour Lake Mine and Kiena Gold Mines Limited, three have been in continuous operation for the last twenty-five years. Dome has operated for seventy-seven years; Sigma about to complete fifty years, and Campbell approaching forty. Overall, milling processes are virtually the same as they were twenty-five years ago. Tota1 go1d production from the three mines has hardly changed; 1960 production, 416,700 ozs. versus 411,300 in 1985. Milling costs have risen by a factor of six or seven and gold price from $35/oz. in 1960 to $322 in 1985.Basic flowsheets are relatively unchanged. Sigma is an all cyanidation mill grinding in cyanide solution; Dome operates gravity concentration and cyanidation; Campbell gravity concentration, flotation, roasting and cyanidation. All three use Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation.Detour and Kiena are two examples of the major change in gold processing in the last twenty-five years - carbon-in-pulp. This process has brought along with it other changes, such as, carbon stripping and reactivation, electrowinning, and induction furnace melting. Modern mill design with its use of outside thickeners and agitators, bulk handling of reagents, instrumentation, etc., has made a radical change in operating conditions and appearance of the new plants."
