Waste rock dumps, tailings impoundments and spent leach heaps are common features at mine sites. Many of these waste disposal facilities contain sulfide-rich minerals, which generate acid mine drainage (AMD) when they oxidize. Control of AMD can be achieved by removing one or more of the three essential components in the acid-generating process (sulfides, air, or water). One AMD prevention measure is to cap the waste with an engineered cover system to minimize the infiltration of water and diffusion of air into the system. Possible cover designs include: ? Earthen ?store-and-release? covers (also known as evapotranspiration (ET) or water balance covers), including capillary barriers. These covers require climate conditions where there is both modest to little rainfall and significantly greater evapotranspiration than precipitation, both annually and seasonally. ? Low-permeability compacted clay liners (CCLs) employing fine-grained soils typically compacted at wet of optimum water content. ? Geosynthetic composite covers, comprised of a geomembrane liner placed over and in direct contact with either a CCL or a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL). These systems have been commonly used for base liners for leach pads as well as covers and base liners at municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills in the US for more than 20 years. Comparisons of these different cover systems, both in terms of performance and cost, are presented later in this paper. First, however, a review of the typical mine closure approaches, and the possible rationale behind them, is warranted.

Historical production data and reserve decline rates can be used both to predict future coal production rates and to estimate when the reserve will be depleted. Reserve estimates inferred herein from historical production data and decline rates are commonly lower than estimates made from geologic data. The latter include significant amounts of lower quality (deeper, thinner, higher sub) coal which may be mined when the better deposits are depleted.

The Brightwater conveyance system includes 26 km of tunnels, a 130 mgd pump station, 2 km of micro tunnels, and a 2.4 km outfall. The tunnels extend from Woodinville to Puget Sound through varying soils in 1 to 7 bars of hydrostatic pressure and depths to 185 m. The tunnel diameters range from 4 to 6 m and include numerous lining systems. This paper highlights major shaft and tunnel design, including dual cellshafts, multiple pipe configuration tunnels, polymer concrete segments, and the use of a one pass lining designed to convey high pressure effluent.

The Modified Detroit River Outfall No. 2 (MOD DRO-2) will discharge treated wastewater to the Detroit River. Construction of a 6.4-m-diameter, 1.9-km-long tunnel was halted in 2003 by flooding during tunneling with an open face hard rock TBM. A new design for a higher rock tunnel, a ?Modified? design, was completed in 2007 and Notice to Proceed to the tunnel contractor was given in November 2008. Project duration is four years for completion of tunneling and start of outfall tunnel operation. This tunneling project has high groundwater pressure (5 bar), pervious limestone rock of up to 140 MPa (20,000 psi) strength, and hydrogen sulphide in the groundwater. The new tunnel will be connecting to access shafts and outfall diffuser riser shafts previously built for the now-abandoned tunnel. The new tunnel design construction contract, and initial planning to use a pressurized-face (slurry) hard rock TBM are presented.

"The Industrial Comminution Efficiency (ICE) working group, part of the Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group (GMSG) has engaged a large number of industry professionals representing mining companies, equipment vendors, consultants and metallurgical laboratories with interests and capabilities in the comminution field. These participants have collaborated to develop three guidelines for the assessment of the efficiency of mineral comminution circuits. Two of these guidelines deal specifically with power based modelling techniques to quantify energy efficiency using widely practiced techniques, those developed by Bond (1961), Rowland and McIvor (2009), and Morrell (2009). The third guideline deals with the sampling and surveying of grinding circuits as is required to provide the necessary information, at appropriate quality, to furnish the efficiency analysis promoted by the first two guidelines. This preprint will focus on the Guideline on Methods to Survey and Sample Grinding Circuits, which is currently in the final stages of peer review and finalization by the GMSG. INTRODUCTION It is important to make a clear distinction on the scope of work of the GMSG guideline for sampling grinding circuits. Many mineral processing practitioners are familiar with the sampling and surveying of comminution circuits, in particular grinding circuits, for performance diagnosis and the identification of optimization potential. These surveys often provide information for population balance modelling of individual comminution and classification unit processes, and as a result require a large amount of information to calibrate and validate the unit models. As a result these surveys are labour intensive, somewhat expensive depending on internal capabilities of the mine site or company, and have a long time span from initial planning to final reporting. They also require a high level of expertise to process the survey data, simulate the circuit and make sensible recommendations on follow up actions. As a result of these factors full grinding circuit surveys are not a common occurrence at a large number of facilities, and several years may pass before follow up surveys are conducted. In the ensuing gap between surveys, the efficiency of the grinding circuit must often be taken on faith, and this is considered an unacceptable lapse in an environment of strained natural resources and low commodity prices. To support the rapid and productive energy efficiency analysis being promoted by the ICE working group, a much simplified survey and analysis process is required. The process reflected in the GMSG guideline is indeed more conducive to frequent analysis, at a skill level that is well within the capabilities of the average plant metallurgist. As a result it becomes feasible to conduct mini-surveys of plant performance, which can be used to quickly and precisely diagnose the high level impact of process changes. It can also be manipulated by experienced practitioner to provide sufficient information for modelling of the circuit to estimate the impact of process changes, supporting an initial rate and rank exercise to focus plant optimization efforts."

This paper describes results obtained in a test program performed with new equipment, called Mini Pilot Plant, manufactured by Canadian Process Technologies. This equipment was acquired by CVRD aiming at testing flotation circuits, in a continuous closed configuration, with samples obtained from drill cores. Success of this goal would allow CVRD to establish the metallurgical performance of mineral deposits with more confidence in comparison to Locked Cycle Tests (LCT). This paper discusses the importance of assessing the ore variability and compares results obtained in LCTs and Mini Pilot Plant. Results suggest that more reliable data is obtained in MPP test.

Many techniques that are used to characterize and monitor microbial populations associated with sulfide mineral bioleaching require the cultivation of the organisms on solid or liquid media. Chemolithotrophic species, such as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans, or thermophilic chemolithotrophs, such as Acidianus brierleyi and Sulfolobus solfataricus can grow quite slowly, requiring weeks to complete efforts to identify and quantify these microbes associated with bioleach samples. Real-time PCR (polymerase chain reaction) assays in which DNA targets are amplified in the presence of fluorescent oligonucleotide primers, allowing the monitoring and quantification of the amplification reactions as they progress, provide a means of rapidly detecting the presence of microbial species of interest, and their relative abundance in a sample. This presentation will describe the design and use of such assays to monitor acidophilic microbes in the environment and in bioleaching operations. These assays provide results within 2-3 hours, and can detect less than 100 individual microbial cells.

Preface The intention of this paper is to provide the reader with knowledge gained here at Memorial University regarding the practical use of the Bruker SDD x-ray detector for applications in image analysis. Included below are descriptions of the detector’s characteristics and observations regarding precautionary use. What is described below is relevant to the XFlash® model 3001 detector only, whereas the model 4010 is the new and currently available detector. The manufacturer has provided up-to-date information and a figure that presents very different behaviour relative to the characteristics described in this paper. That information and figure is also included here as an addendum (see figure 9). Introduction It has been more than two decades since an image analyzer has been proposed based on the unique imaging characteristics and spatial resolution provided by the scanning electron microscope (SEM) together with energy discriminating x-ray (EDX) acquisition (Reid et al, 1984). From the inception of technique, technology of the day has played the major role for making applications increasingly more practical. Computers, digital imaging, and softwares together with computer automation of modern digital SEMs have all played their part in advancing the technique to where it is today.

A sustainable coal industry needs to achieve a number objectives concerning mainly with superior utilisation of deposits and improved environmental performance. Modern quality control systems, which are greatly based on the on-line analysers, play an important role in achieving sustainability targets. This paper discusses the testing and application of on-line ash analysers installed in the Ptolemais and Megalopolis lignite mines in Greece and examines the possibility of using this type of analyser to control blending and homogenisation operations. The effect of the accuracy of on-line analyser to control process, when used for the characterization of low rank coals with complex and variable composition, such as greek lignites, is examined.

The Bolivar Cu-Zn skarn deposit in the Piedras Verdes mining district of Chihuahua is one of many base and precious metal deposits in the north-northwest trending Sierra Madre Belt extending across the states of Chihuahua, Durango and Sonora in northwestern Mexico. The information presented here is drawn from two papers on the Bolivar property1,4 plus new information. Historical mining and exploration for polymetallic Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag-Au deposits in the Sierra Madre Belt dates to Spanish Colonial days. Access to the Bolivar Property (Figure 1) is by paved road (approximately 305 km southwest from Chihuahua) and approximately 80 km by all-season gravel roads to the villages of Cieneguita (population ~1,000) and Piedras Verdes (population ~500) adjacent to the property. [ ] The Bolivar property comprises an old Cu-Zn producer (the Bolivar Mine), exploration concessions adjacent to the Bolivar Mine, and a new camp at the mine that supports mining, exploration and maintenance. From 1980 to 2000, former operators extracted approximately 300,000 tonnes of ore that was hand sorted to an average grade of 5-6% Cu and 25-30% Zn. From 2005-2010, Dia Bras produced from the mine just over 600,000 tonnes at an average grade of 1.7% Cu and 8.6% Zn. Dia Bras transported mineralized rock 275 km by truck and rail to its Malpaso mill, located about 30 km west of Cuauhtémoc in central Chihuahua, from 2005 until October 2011 when the new Piedras Verde mill was commissioned only 5 km from the mine. (Note: the Company cannot use the term ?ore? because it has never completed a feasibility study.)

INTRODUCTION In radon dosimetry diffusion chambers with passive [a]-detectors are now in current use to investigate the long-term accumulated indoor exposure of radon and daughters. For the diffusion chamber developed at Karlsruhe the electrochemical etching technique (ECE) was applied to reveal [a]-particles in polycarbonate plastic detectors. Compared to conventional etching, the main advantages of the ECE are the large track diameter, simple track counting in a single field of about 1 cm2, stability of the latent tracks to humidity and temperature and ability for a long-term accumulation up to 1 year. The electrochemical etching system was designed to etch in one run about 101 foils by using a 200 W high voltage generator. The commercial available radon dosimeter system is applied for a country wide program of measuring radon in dwellings. Because of an increasing interest of radon monitoring in mines, environmental monitoring and personnel dosimetry the properties of several track etch detectors have been studied. In the comparative study, Makrofol E, LR 115 and CR 39 were used in the diffusion chamber to investigate the etching techniques, the relative efficiency, the measurable [a]-energy range, and the counting statistic for the measurement of radon concentration. THE KARLSRUHE DIFFUSION CHAMBER The design of the Karlsruhe diffusion chamber is presented in Fig. 1. The upper part of the chamber is closed by a fibreglass filter to separate radon from aerosols, heavy dust particles and radon decay products. Inside the diffusion chamber [a]-particles from radon and daughters are detected by two passive radon detectors, one on the bottom of the chamber and the other in front of the filter. With the fibreglass filter applied the diffusion time is about 1 minute for radon. Therefore, also short-term variations in the radon concentration are recorded by the track detector. Mainly because of the short halflife of thoron (56 s) only about 7 % of the thoron concentration is expected in the diffusion chamber. Radon monitoring provides the estimation of the long-term accumulated mean value of the radon concentration with a lowest detectable concentration of 0.1 pCi/1 after 3 months accumulation by using polycarbonate track etch detectors, an electrochemical etching technique and track counting in a single field of 1 cm2. The diffusion chamber was optimized for the polycarbonate track detector with respect to chamber geometry and detector position [1]. Table 1 presents data for 3 different diffusion chamber designs. The radon sensitivity of the diffusion chamber depends on the [a]-energy discrimination and the angular response of the [a]-track detector. The difference between foil No 2 and foil No 1 can be explained by an additional plate-out effect of radon daughters on foil No 3. The high sensitivity of foil No 3 compared to that of foil No 2 is caused by an increase of the effective volume and the effective area for [a]-particle from radon and from plated-out decay products, respectively. Additional experiments have been performed in order to investigate the electrostatic properties of the plastic material and the properties of the diffusion filter [1]. The properties of bare a-detectors were compared with those inside the diffusion chamber. In contrast to laboratory results, dust particles deposited on the detector surface or in the environment of the detector obviously affect the reproducibility of the bare detector significantly. After 4 months exposure in dwellings the scatter of 10 dosimeters exposed in the same room exceeds a factor of 3 compared to 15 % for the diffusion chamber. COMPARATIVE STUDY OF TRACK ETCH DETECTORS Detector types and evaluation technique In the comparative study the properties of the following plastic track etch detectors have been applied: - LR 115 from Kodak Pathé, France, is a red dyed cellulose nitrate layer of 13 µm thickness on a 100 µm thick polyester support. The holes appears as bright spots in a dark red background. In an optical microscope counting of through etched [a]-tracks which must penetrate the detector layer - CR 39 from Pershore, England, is an ally1 diglycol carbonate plastic of about 300 m thickness. The normal etched [a]-tracks are counted by an optical microscope and the ECE [a]-tracks by a microfiche reader.

Every two years, industry leaders and practitioners of tunneling and underground construction gather at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) to learn from their peers about the most recent advances and breakthroughs in this unique fleld. Industry experts from around the world highlight their most recent projects and share real-world experiences. They also share with their colleagues new technologies and methodologies that attendees can take home to their respective projects. The 2013 RETC was held June 23-26 in Washing-ton, D.C., itself home to several major tunneling and underground construction projects. The conference is sponsored by SME. Attendance was 1,384 professionals. The accompanying exhibit hosted 159 companies in 188 booths. A few of the topics covered in the technical sessions dealt with caverns and large spans, contracting practices, tunnel linings, design and planning, geotechnical considerations and instrumentation. The conference was preceded by four short courses, all well attended. They were ?Grouting in Underground Construction,? ?Tunnel Lining Design,? ?Microtunneling Application? and ?Risk, Uncertainty and Hard Decisions.? In addition, a sold-out field trip to D.C. Water?s Blue Plains Tunnel took place following the conference. The Blue Plains Tunnel is part of the agency?s Clean Rivers Project. Also during the meeting, three students each received $5,000 scholarships from the UCA of SME, while another three students each received $2,500 scholarships from RETC (See page 53).

Stope instability at Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd. (AGC) is a major concern. Using information from field mapping, major discontinuity sets were defined, Rock Quality Designation (RQD) was determined. The stability of wedges in the stope walls was assessed using the commercially available computer program UNWEDGE(Rock Science, 1992). Analytical results indicate that the presence of graphite infilling in joints contributes to instability, while steeply dipping joints control wedge slabbing and wedge toppling in the hanging wall. Stable stope widths and dimensions were determined to range from8.1 to 30 meters (m).

Coal mine ground control is the science of the application of rock mechanics principles to coal mining operations. More acceptance of ground control techniques by the US coal mining industry has been seen in the 1980s. It has been demonstrated many times that a proper ground control design is key to a successful coal mining operation. However, numerous in-mine applications of various ground control techniques by the author indicate that cur¬rent techniques need improvement. The biggest problem in coal mine ground control is that miners are dealing with materials of rapidly varying properties and occurrence. And only the exposed surface can be identified positively. Thus, in attempting to solve the ground control problems, many unknown factors are assumed. Some of these problems deriving from such assumptions are discussed here. Coal pillars There are two types of coal pillars - barrier and chain pillars - depending on the purpose. Barrier pillars are those located between panels or sections or mines. Their objective is to isolate the mined-out effects of one from the other. Chain pillars are characteristic of room-and-pillar mining. They are designed to support the overburden load and protect the surrounding entries and crosscuts. Pillar design is the most popular and, frequently, the only ground control technique employed by coal operators for mine design. There are many pillar design formulae available (Bieniawski, 1983; Peng, 1986). Nearly all consider both size and width/height effects. Specifically, pillar strength decreases with increases in pillar size and increases with increase in the ratio of width to height. However, the manner of those changes varies with investigators. Consequently, the pillar size determined varies considerably from investigator to investigator. And the variation grows much more pronounced as the seam depth increases (Fig. 1). The question, then, is which one should be used? One may say each formula is developed for a particular coalfield. A particular formula may have been used to design a pillar, which has not failed. Does that mean it was over designed? Not necessarily, because no one can confirm its stated "safety factor." Recent case studies (Peng, 1986; Tang and Peng, 1988) show that all pillar formulae are too conservative for chain pillar design in room-and-pillar mines due to the following two problems: • Uncertainty about in situ pillar strength. All formulae employ uniaxial compressive strength of selected samples tested in the laboratory and scaled to that for underground pillars. The scaling factors are not well proven. In situ testings by Bieniawski (1969) suggested that 1.5 m (5 ft) pillars are representative of in situ pillars that, after being tested in various US coal mines, are not universally applicable. • Uncertainty about the actual loading on the pillar. The most frequently used tributary loading theory defines the loading as total overburden weight tributary to each pillar (from roofline to surface). This is too conservative when it applies to coal measure rocks. The overburden consists of layered strata of different stiffness. Many stiffer strata will self-support over small roof spans. Depending on the location of these strata above the coal seam, it will reduce pillar loading in various proportions. It follows that total structural analysis using, for instance, finite element method is more appropriate. It can take into account the interaction of roof and floor strata with coal. Installation of a horizontal air blocking shelf around the inside perimeter of the surface mining drill deck shroud is proposed to improve dust capture. Without the use of this shelf, a strong coanda effect airflow pattern results in dust leakage to the environment, especially at the shroud-to-ground interface. Bailing air exits the drill hole and travels along the drill steel to the underside of the table, where it fans out across the bottom of the drill table and continues down the sides of the shroud. This dust-laden bailing air then strikes the ground and fans out under gaps between the shroud and the ground. The proposed shelf prevents dust-laden air from striking the ground by redirecting it toward the center of the enclosure, where it can be captured. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the shelf reduced dust levels outside of the shroud by 81% under operating conditions consisting of a 1.9:1 collector to bailing airflow ratio, and a 5.1-cm (2-in) gap between the shroud and ground. The shelf was 15.2-cm (6-in) wide and located at a height equal to 2/3 the distance measured from the bottom of the shroud to the bottom of the drill table. The air blocking shelf was also capable of overcoming the adverse impact of vertical leakage along the shroud seams as long as this leakage was confined to an area below the horizontal plane defined by the shelf location.

The Candelaria copper-gold mine is located approximately 25 km south and east of Copiapo in Region III, Chile. The original concentrator was designed to treat 28,000 t/d (30,800 stpd) of chalcopyrite-bearing ore through a circuit consisting of a single 11.0 m(36 ft) diameter SAG mill, two ball mills, conventional rougher and scavenger flotation, column cell cleaner flotation, and ceramic disc filtration. The plant was commissioned in August 1994 and quickly reached design capacity and expected levels of metallurgical performance. In May 1996, a decision was made to double the capacity of the concentrator by the addition of a second line of equipment. The expanded facilities were commissioned in October 1997, less than 18 months after the decision to proceed, and well within the budget. The original concentrator facilities were replicated or duplicated as much as possible, however, a number of important equipment changes were made to take advantage of industry developments since the original concentrator was designed. These included the use of Eimco 120 m3 (4,200 ft3) cells for rougher and scavenger flotation and the installation of a Svedala VTM-800Vertimill for regrinding. This paper describes the rationale behind these changes and explores the reasons for the success of the project.

The speed and internal accuracy of today's electronic calculators can be utilized to write an efficient slurry calculation program. The calculator's input/output printing feature offers additional benefits for data organizing and record keeping. This program allows slurry calculations to be performed without the urgency of immediately transferring a calculated result onto a process flowsheet or specification sheet. The number of flowsheets required for some hvdrometallurgical processes means the number of process stream blocks or ladder diagram entries can become substantial. Slurry calculations for such projects tend to become repetitious and tedious, and the chances for errors increase both in calculation and data entry onto process documents. Using this program has minimized both types of errors. Checking process flowsheets is particularly expedient with the program because you may "walk" through the flowsheet on a weight basis, i.e., solids rate and solids density, and have the program verify and/or correct the volume entries, gallons, and specific gravities. The program was initially used on a beneficiation project to check some 500 data entry values on ladder diagrams covering seven process flowsheets. Numerous hand calculation errors were determined and corrected, and the time for completely checking and correcting the flowsheet ladder diagrams was substantially reduced.

This paper will discuss the process for making lightweight aggregate, the waste materials that make good lightweight aggregate, the chemistry of making lightweight aggregate and finally a discussion of the commercial prospects for making lightweight aggregate from wastes. Svedala Industries has been making lightweight aggregate (LWA) from waste materials for the last ten years. Many clay-like materials, such as coal-fired boiler ash and washings from a granite quarry, can be used alone or with additional waste materials to produce a commercially saleable LWA.

Expert control of grinding and flotation plants has been successfully used in the minerals industry since the 1970?s. The earliest of these systems were written in a hard-coded fashion in FORTRAN, BASIC or Pascal. Second generation systems were built using the first experimental expert system shells that were being developed in the artificial intelligence community. Later systems were deployed in expert systems designed for real-time processing plants that also include the ability to model the process with neural network models and optimize setpoint selection through the use of genetic algorithms. [1,2] In spite of the fact that significant performance increases have been achieved using these systems they are not perfect and can be improved. They suffer from the static nature of their rules and to a degree the process models. There is an opportunity to further increase system performance by systematically taking advantage of the tremendous amount of data produced by the expert system to improve the design, the heuristic rules, the model topologies and the use of the models. Data mining refers to extracting or mining knowledge from large amounts of data where the objective is to automatically analyze, classify and summarize the data to automatically discover and characterize trends in it and to automatically flag anomalies. [3] Clearly, modern process control systems are capable of collecting vast amounts of data. Without a doubt, these data contain important information on the operation of our plants and their ultimate optimization. Coupling the information mined from these data with Expert Control Systems should produce more effective control and greater knowledge of the grinding process and the flotation process. Now, with the advent of effective monitoring of entire minerals plant electric consumption it is possible to not only optimize plant production in real-time it is possible to analyze total plant electrical consumption and incorporate it into the plant control logic thereby improving the overall plant economic performance. This is particularly important with the ever more complex power contracts that plants operate under.

Land access and tenure certainty for exploration and mine development is absolutely critical to the foundation of a healthy, sustainable and environmentally-sound mineral exploration and mining sector. Without certainty, mineral exploration will be severely eroded, resulting in reduced possibility of discovering and developing new mines. The development of positive relationships based on a shared commitment of understanding, mutual respect and trust by First Nations and the mineral sector can provide this increased business certainty and social and economic benefits for local First Nations. As a sector, we face many challenges in regard to building relationships with First Nations. The root solution to addressing these challenges lies in recognizing and understanding the unique cultural differences that exist between indigenous people and the business community. From the Canadian perspective, the First Nations culture differs vastly from non-Aboriginal culture. It is equally as imperative that cultural differences be acknowledged and respected at home as they are when seeking business opportunities in other countries. The traditional “business” approaches and relationships that one understands and incorporates with one’s contractors, legal counsel, investors and Board are generally not be the best approach for the introductory and subsequent meetings with indigenous peoples. This paper is written from the perspective of my experiences accumulated over the past ten years, first as Manager of Aboriginal Affairs for one of the largest forest companies in British Columbia and now, as President and CEO of the Association for Mineral Exploration BC (AME BC). Before the gritty issues of consultation and benefit sharing are dealt with, it is worthwhile to clear up the confusion surrounding terminology. “Indigenous Peoples” is used in a global context; “Aboriginal Peoples” is used in the Canadian context therefore includes Métis, Inuit and First Nations Peoples. The term “First Nations”, in the context of British Columbia, perhaps has its roots in the fact that treaties have largely not been settled. Therefore it is important to reaffirm that British Columbia was not discovered. First Nations have resided in British Columbia since time immemorial.
