"As ores degrade, mining techniques and chemistries change to meet market demand and maintain product quality. The balance of recovery and grade is a significant challenge in the Crago Process where an anionic collector is used to float phosphate, followed by acid scrubbing, then an amine float to improve product grade. As the grade is a requirement for DAP and MAP production, recovery is the criteria to suffer. Phosphate losses in the amine float can bring overall recovery down by as much as 18%, creating a growing need to think outside the box to improve recovery. This paper will focus on the theory of amine tail recycling and the best methods to optimize the overall phosphate recovery by recycling the tails from the cleaner flotation step. INTRODUCTION In 2014 the total US phosphate production was down 13% over the prior year, from 31.9 to 27.1 Mt, which accounts for 12.32% of the world’s phosphate rock production. Florida and North Carolina phosphate production accounted for 80% of total US phosphate production, which was down from 85% the previous year. This decline is due in part to the closing of the last phosphate mine in Polk County, FL - which had an operating phosphate mine for over 100 years (Gurr, 2015). Another factor contributing to the reduction in contribution from FL & NC is the increasing challenges in beneficiating the remaining ore deposits. The Central Florida mining district has historically been in the Bone Valley deposit, where raw apatite was abundant with P2O5 values as high as 15%. The Bone Valley ore also had characteristics favorable to beneficiation to 27.5-29.7 %P2O5 while achieving recoveries above 86%. The move southward into the Hawthorne Formation has seen the ore feed grade hit some historic lows, and the matrix characteristics pose more challenges to phosphate producers. The Hawthorne Formation experienced lateritic weathering after the Bone Valley formation which altered the apatite to aluminum phosphate minerals, and alteration of montmorillonite to kaolinite, releasing MgO that caused the dolomitization of the top of the Hawthorne limestone (Cathcart, 1966). Elevated levels of dolomite can yield an increase in slurry viscosities, reduce production rates, and increase energy costs in the wet-acid fertilizer process. The MgO will also act to dilute grade, making it more difficult to achieve a standard 18-46-0 product (McHardy, 1981)."

One of the major problems of mineral exploration is the ability to reliably distinguish between uneconomic mineral deposits and economic mineralization. While the mining industry uses many geophysical methods to locate the mineral deposits, until recently, there was no reliable technology for mineral resources identification and characterization. The main goal of this project is to develop a new geophysical technique for subsurface material characterization, mineral exploration and mineral discrimination, based on electromagnetic methods. The proposed new technique is based on examining the spectral induced polarization effects in electromagnetic data using the modern distributed acquisition systems and advanced methods of 3-D modeling and inversion. The recovered parameters of the relaxation model will be used for the discrimination of different rocks, and in this way will provide an ability to distinguish between uneconomic mineral deposits and zones of economic mineralization using geophysical remote sensing technology (Zonge, 1976). The proposed research and development is undertaken using multi-partner collaboration between the University of Utah, four major mining companies, Kennecott Exploration, BHP Billiton World Exploration Inc., Placer Dome Inc., Phelps Dodge Exploration, and Zonge Engineering Inc., which is equipment manufacturer and service provider to the mining industry. The multi-partner collaboration between the academic institution, the University of Utah, and mining industry helps to identify the appropriate mining target and conduct the field experiment for practical demonstration of the developed new technology, which is an important part of the this project.

The Pacheco Pumping Plant is situated on the west end of San Luis Reservoir in western Merced County, California. It is designed to draw water from the reservoir and pump it into a 3,500,000 gallon regulating tank. The water then flows entirely by gravity to the Coyote Pump Station in Morgan Hill, a distance of 40 miles, where it is pumped into Anderson Reservoir. This water is used to recharge the depleted groundwater table in the Santa Clara Valley. Eventually, some of the water will be diverted to Hollister in San Benito County and to Watsonville and Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz County. The owner is the United States Bureau of Reclamation. The underground work consisted of a fifteen foot finished diameter surge shaft 250 feet deep to the crown of the pump chamber; a twenty foot finished diameter pump chamber which declined from the shaft at 14.2% for ninety feet and then ran horizontally for 180 feet; and twelve each five foot diameter steel lined intake shafts 240 feet deep which intersect the pump chamber in the horizontal section. (Figure 1) Upon completion of the pump chamber, the contractor had to dewater the existing tunnel under the reservoir, excavate the remaining fifteen foot plug, and concrete the transition. The low bidder for this contract was Underground - Continental-Heller at 414,456,000. Excavation of the open cut for the pumping plant and surge shaft began on April 14, 1983. This was performed using a Koehring 1066D backhoe, dozer, trucks, and two Cat 631 scrapers. The excavation was started at the surge shaft so that the grouting could begin

When mining accidents occur, workers often become trapped and/or incapacitated. Current rescue operations can be dangerous and too slow to produce favorable outcomes. Currently, no method exists for rescue crews to scout ahead at critical times to assess the situation. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), through a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) sponsored program has developed the Gemini-Scout mine rescue platform. The Gemini-Scout was created to assist in underground mine rescue missions. It has been designed to go into potentially hazardous environments to assess the conditions (structural, air quality, temperature). In addition, it will enable two-way communications with potential survivors prior to human rescue teams being able to enter the area. The Gemini platform is a dual tracked-chassis design, which gives the robot excellent mobility in unstructured environments. The design includes a passive 2-degree of freedom joint between two identical bodies allowing for ±30deg of pitch and roll. In addition to the base mobility platform, the Gemini-Scout incorporates many other features to help it succeed in its underground mission. The electronics are mounted in explosion proof housings to ensure safe operations in hazardous gas environments. The platform is also able to operate in up to 18in of standing water with its elevated pan/tilt cameras for navigation. A four-channel video link and Two-way audio on the vehicle help to ensure located survivors can communicate with the robot operators. The platform also incorporates a Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved multi-gas sensor to monitor air quality. SNL believes that this technology is broad enough to be appealing to other first responders, such as police, firefighters and medical personnel. Gemini could easily be fitted to handle earthquake and fire scenarios, and it could provide relief in currently inaccessible situations.

The NC State University Minerals Research Laboratory (MRL) and Waste Reduction Partners (WRP) of the Land of Sky Regional Council joined efforts in 2000 to initiate a technically sound and practical program for the management of high-volume coal combustion by-products (CCBs) in North Carolina. The accumulation of CCBs from coal burning boilers throughout the state of North Carolina posed a substantial storage problem, and the area was overripe for an effective management program, which would be environmentally sustainable. In particular, the public utility generators had filled storage ponds on their properties, and the storage overload had grown to critical proportions. Much the same situation existed for paper mill biosolids, which were stored on site in landfill cells along with daily output of CCBs from the mill boilers. A conversion process via the patented pyro-process12 (US Patent No. 5,342,442) to produce synthetic light weight aggregates (LWA) from CCBs and paper mill sludge was conceived to process large quantities of both these waste materials. MRL and WRP initiated and formed a consortium that brought together academia, private industry and state agencies to evaluate the production of LWA by the pyro-process. The industry partners included representatives from the power companies, industrial ash generators, expediters for coal ash products, as well as concrete block manufacturers. It was important to welcome interested parties from not only the western North Carolina area and other parts of the state but also from neighboring states including Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgia. Membership of this consortium evolved during the intervening years to include the following participants and supporters: Progress Energy Carolinas; Duke Energy; Santee Cooper; Full Circle Solutions; Land-of-Sky Regional Council; NC Department of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance; Ecusta Business Development Center; Blue Ridge Paper Products; Jackson Paper and Manufacturing Company; Miller Perlite; Appalachian Products; General Shale Brick; Metromont Materials; Small Business Technology Development Center of the University of North Carolina system and North Carolina State University The initial development program conducted at the Minerals Research Laboratory (MRL) was to formulate an acceptable LWA product, which fulfilled user specifications for light weight concrete block and structural concrete application. Support work and program coordination efforts were furnished by retired technical volunteers in WRP. The work advanced steadily, using proven technologies well established in the mineral industry, to generate a very satisfactory LWA. The consortium then concluded that a more comprehensive CCB conversion program would have more appeal for full scale manufacture and commercialization, if a variety of products from CCB separation were generated. This product assortment would include bottom ash, low carbon fly ash, recovered carbon of high purity, as well as the synthetic LWA. The bottom ash would serve the concrete block market, the fly ash was in demand for ready-mix concrete, and the high carbon product could be pelletized and used as a fuel for reburn or by the steel industry, and the LWA was a sought-after component for light weight concrete applications. After scouting all these potential markets and finding them to be viable, the consortium then inaugurated an integrated pilot plant program for the CCB separation and conversion. The plan was organized in three (3) parts: (1) Phase I ? bench scale evaluation studies (2) Phase II continuous pilot plant evaluation and (3) Phase III ? conceptual commercial plant design including marketing efforts and attraction of business entrepreneurs to build a full scale manufacturing plant. Phase II would serve to validate the process in a continuous mode and produce substantial quantities of products for preliminary marketing efforts and for demonstration-of-use purposes. The consortium agreed to the name, CAROLINA ASH PRODUCTS, (CAP), for the integrated pilot plant program. The products generated might be designated with the CAP label as: bottom ash would be named CAP Granules, low carbon fly ash would become CAP Ash, recovered high carbon product would be CAP Carbon, and LWA would have the name CAP Stone. Phase II of the program processed 20 tons (18 t) of ponded ash from Progress Energy storage at a rate of 600 lb (271 kg) of raw ash per hour with favorable results. PRELIMINARY STUDIES Prior to committing laboratory research and development effort as well as support and coordination activities to this program, it was necessary to determine (1) the level of need for a freshly launched CCB reutilization program in this state and (2) what degree of versatility was necessary for such a process. State agency records and a survey of recent boiler operations indicated that in the state of North Carolina at least 77 facilities manage CCBs from their boiler operations. Despite continuing development efforts in more eastern parts of the state, the use of CCBs for commercial applications has not increased to a level which alleviates the need to store vast quantities in private monofills on the generator?s property. More than 1.25 million tons (1.13 million t) of CCBs are landfilled in NC annually, with 300,000 tons (271,985 t) per year generated in western NC alone. Many different boiler types, which span both very old units and those that are modern and efficient, were to be found. These included stoker-fired units, pulverized coal boilers, slag-tap furnaces, and fluidized bed combustion boilers covering a range of sizes. Any systems designed to separate CCB components from all these sources and convert them to useful secondary products would need broad processing latitude and flexibility. Up to the present there has been a paucity of research done in the western part of the state to find productive alternatives to storage in landfills. With tipping fees in our largest landfill now approaching $40 per ton ($44 per t) and escalating transportation fees (about $200 per truckload up to 40 tons, traveling a distance of 25 miles), the problem has become urgent both economically and ecologically. A well-designed, integrated wet process for CCB separation into value-added products had much potential to be less expensive than landfilling as well as to provide saleable materials with acceptable profit margins. These preliminary investigations also revealed that other major waste streams, in particular paper mill sludge and municipal and animal waste biosolids were important candidates for priority attention. Since these biosolids could furnish the organic component of a synthetic LWA product, they could be consumed as part of the same program. This added interest value to a growing list of partners to support and participate in the program.

The Buick mine, located 195 kilometers (120 miles) southwest of St. Louis in the Viburnum Trend, is owned and operated by Homestake Mining Company. The mine produces lead and zinc ore from a room and pillar mining method at a depth of approximately 335 m (1 100 ft). The Buick orebody typically averages 60 to 120 m (200 to 400 ft) in width with ore thicknesses ranging from 2.4 to 36.6 m (8 to 120 ft). The mine is divided in two; the halves are referred to as the North mine and South mine orebodies. The North mine orebody contains the higher grade ore; however, the developed reserves for the South mine orebody comprise about 60 percent of the total developed reserves for the Buick property. Existing pillars represent one-third of the total developed reserves.

Three sulfide minerals, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite, were leached using a bioleaching mode and an electrobioleaching mode. The former mode was used to leach the minerals with the bacterium A. ferrooxidans in a bioreactor. In the latter mode, the leaching of the minerals was performed in a combination of a bioreactor and an electrochemical cell. In this set-up, the solution was circulated between the bioreactor and the cathode compartment, the two reactors were in series, and the cell was operated intermittently. The mechanism is such that an increase in Fe(II) concentration, which is a nutrient of the bacteria, by electrochemical reduction of Fe(III) would increase the bacterial population and in turn would accelerate the leaching of the mineral. It has been found that the electrobioleaching of chalcopyrite is an improvement over the bioleaching with respect to the fact that leaching conversion is higher and a high level of Fe(II) concentration can be maintained. However, the electrobioleaching of sphalerite does not show any improvement over bioleaching. The electrobioleaching of pyrite is similar to that of chalcopyrite, and this has potential to be used in applications such as coal desulfurization and pretreatment of refractory gold ore in heap leaching where fine gold particles are entrapped inside pyrite particles.

"The Riyadh Metro Project forms part of a complete new public transport system integrated in the urban planning and development of the fast growing capital city of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Design & Build project consists of 176 km of a new metro network with 57 km of double track single tunnel infrastructures, spread over six metro lines. During the design phase, geological, hydrogeological, geotechnical and geophysical site investigations were undertaken to chart the, previously uncharted, underground construction space. Different TBM solutions were selected for implementation taking due consideration of the ground conditions of each metro line. The results obtained from deep excavations for underground stations and analysis of the TBM tunneling data will be used as key input for future tunneling projects in the Riyadh and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The present paper details the design conditions and presents the solutions for large diameter tunnels in karstic limestone. INTRODUCTION The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh was established in 1974 as the organizational, planning, executive and coordinating body responsible for the development of Riyadh. Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA), established in 1983, is the High Commission’s executive, technical and administrative arm. The ADA is responsible for implementing the High Commission's organizational, planning, executive and coordinating decisions and missions (ADA 2015). One of the remits of the ADA is the preparation and execution of a transport plan for the city. The metro network is planned to be the backbone of the public transport system developed as part of the King Abdulaziz Project for Riyadh Public Transport in Riyadh. With six lines and a total length of 176.5 km (Table 1) and 85 metro stations, the metro network will cover most of the densely populated areas, public facilities, and the educational, commercial and medical institutions. The network will connect the King Khalid International Airport, the King Abdullah Financial District, main universities, Riyadh downtown and the public transport center. The public transport plan includes a future bus network with 22 lines on 1200 km and 6765 stops that will be the main feeder for the Riyadh metro network; it will also be the main mode of transportation within and around Riyadh districts (ADA 2015)."

A mine fire is one of the most challenging safety issues facing a mine operator and can occur at any location underground. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Twentymile Coal Mine, Colorado, conducted in-mine experiments to determine the capability of high-expansion foam for addressing underground fires. The tests were conducted in sloping entries with high-capacity diesel-powered foam generators. The following results were observed: a well-designed, maintained, and properly operated high-expansion foam generator can propagate a foam plug hundreds of feet in steep upward sloping (20 pct) multiple entries against a ventilation pressure; stoppings and partitions designed to contain the foam plug in upward sloping entries must be substantially constructed; and the predicted quantity of foam concentrate can be significantly less than the actual amount used due to foam losses, such as bubble breakage on dry surfaces. This paper describes the production of high-expansion firefighting foam and discusses the in-mine experimental tests and results. Instabilities occurred as a result of climate changes caused to investigate the rock behavior dependency to temperature changes, in this paper. In the natural earth condition, the phase transition of pore water has known to be the most effective factor causing different rocks mechanical properties due to temperature changes. So, the temperature range of [-30, 30]°C is selected in laboratory tests of this study. P-wave velocity, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and elasticity modulus of rocks at different temperatures are studied by developing a temperature adjusting apparatus. The tests were performed on three rock types. The results show that firstly, the temperature reduction and pore fluid freezing improves these rock?s mechanical properties. Secondly, the dependency of rock properties to climate changes depends on the type and shape of its porosity as well as porosity percent. The improvement of rock mechanical properties in jointed rocks exceeds rocks with spherical pores. Finally, maximum changes in rock?s properties occur at [-10, 0]°C, which includes the phase transition of pore fluid. Keywords: Temperature; Rock Mechanical Properties; Pore Fluid; Porosity.

Development of the Batu Hijau copper project was completed in the fourth quarter of 1999 with the formal handover and start-up of ore processing facilities. The project began in August 1996 when the owner, PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT), awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC)contract to Fluor Daniel (FD) for the development of the project. This included a copper concentrator, port, power plant, town site and infrastructure. PTNNT managed the development of the mine and the procurement of the mine equipment. In 1996, Batu Hijau was the largest mining project ever undertaken. Developing the Batu Hijau Mine was complex. It involved the work of thousands of people in all parts of the world to plan, engineer, procure, fabricate and manufacture equipment, supply and deliver materials and equipment, and build the plant.

There is as yet no accepted method of predicting flotation frother performance in plant processes based on laboratory scale characterisation techniques. This paper investigates the use of dynamic surface tension, using the maximum bubble pressure method, as a means of evaluating frothers and frother mixtures. An adsorption model is presented, which has been used to quantify the role of frother type and concentration during frother bubble interaction, based on the correlation of model parameters to physical frother characteristics. This approach was found to provide useful insight with respect to blending and selection of flotation frothers to meet specified flotation performance criteria.

Gentlemen; Rainy day in Upper Michigan, a good time to catch up on reading. Am doing that, and have a couple of questions concerning the K and P paper on roof problems and supports. I wonder if the authors can enlighten me. The compressive strength of the coal was reported as 4.4 MPa (633 psi) and compressive stresses measured in the coal seam were reported at around 27.6 and 48.2 MPa (4000 and 7000 psi ). Can such a soft coal actually contain such a high level of stress? Can it be measured as if the material were elastic, or does the coal behave plastically? Can that stress level be confirmed with hydraulic load cells? And if the coal is so soft, and if it is plastic, why is the stress field not hydrostatic? The intact roofrock appears to be unusually strong, with compressive strength reported at around 145 MPa (21,000 psi), and some failures were noted as soon as the rock was exposed. "Dare-Zereshk deposit is one of the deposits supplies ore for Taft copper Complex in Iran Yazd province. This deposit is situated underneath a village the same name. Prior to mining activities, the village and its agricultural lands should be dislocated and deserted. This paper discusses about sustainability factors in this area including: Social and environmental effects of mining, dislocation and substitution of communities, created and lost jobs, financial and economic factors, quality of life index, infrastructures and post-mining land use. Studies have been performed by coupling Geographical Information System (GIS) with decision support tools such as Multi Attribute Decision Making (MADM), Through these studies revealed that considering the infrastructures developed for mine and plants, earned incomes and changing the community, mining activity in this area not only increases the social and regional sustainability but also improves it to a higher level."

Diesel fuel fire experiments were conducted in NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory’s (PRL) Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to determine the critical air velocity for preventing smoke rollback. Such information is necessary for the preplanning and implementation of ventilation changes during mine fire fighting and rescue operations. The fire intensity varied from 50 kW to 300 kW depending upon the fuel tray area. Airflow in the 2 m high and 2.9 m wide coal mine entry was regulated during the course of each experiment; measured upwind from the fire as an average over the entry cross-section with an ultrasonic airflow sensor; and recorded dynamically with a mine monitoring system. The extent of smoke reversal was monitored with light obscuration monitors, ionization smoke sensors, and visual observations. Experimental results for the critical air velocity for smoke reversal as a function of fire intensity compared very well with model predictions based upon a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) fire dynamics simulator.

The surge of activity in the solar energy market, spurred by government incentives, has created new and more efficient solar technologies, but issues surrounding land- and water-use have backlogged the full-scale development of solar farms. This paper explores siting solar power plants on degraded or polluted lands, such as mine tailings impoundments. Historically, mining and has been integral to Arizona?s economy, but has dwindled in relevance due to urban pressures and environmental regulations. Currently, it is legal to site solar power plants on degraded or polluted lands, but the question remains whether the economics of this degraded lands solar development is more favorable than developing pristine land. Therefore, we explore economics of developing mine tailings impoundments at both the institutional and financial level. Methods of research for this paper were interviews with government regulators, environmental advocacy organizations, farmers, and mining company executives. Financial models using extant tax incentives show a positive net present value for the installation of solar power plants, even when accounting for the costs of land remediation.

Introduction Rock bolting is a general term that encompasses pinning, roof bolting, rib bolting, and cable bolting. Rock bolting contributes the highest nonproductive cost and is the most significant safety risk in mining today. Total installed bolt costs are now more than $20 per bolt. Rebolting or repair work doubles this. And bolting accidents account for about 30% of all fatal and nonfatal lost time accidents. It is only logical, then, for the mine operator to install the highest quality anchors possible. Every bolt on the market - tensioned, untensioned, full contact, or point anchor - has designed capabilities in axial, shear, and fluctuating ground conditions. Bolts will provide a designed support if material specifications and installation procedures fall within the manufacturer's recommendations. This also assumes that there are no unexpected geological or operational changes. Proper material specifications and installation procedures should guarantee the mine operator a quality anchor. To help assure this, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the US Bureau of Mines (USBM), and the AMC Manufacturers group developed stringent ASTM materials standards. These govern mechanical point anchor bolts and bolts using threaded and nonthreaded rebar. There are also minimum standards that suppliers must comply with in the manufacture of frictional bolts. However, most frictional bolt standards are based on the manufacturer's own specifications. It would be impossible to set uniform regulations on frictional bolts. Each bolt provides support in a slightly different manner and thereby requires different material needs. Quality Control In any case, material quality can generally be assured through tight order specifications and periodic quality control checks. The problem with installing quality anchors does not solely lie with the material. It includes all the events that occur from the time a bolt leaves a manufacturer to the time it is installed. The anchoring ability of any major type bolt can be affected by transportation, storage, mechanical performance of installation equipment, installation demands of the operator, proper drilling accessories, and local geology. Table 1 and Fig. 1 document the negative events that can affect each bolt and the degree to which it can be affected. Drilling a hole of oversized diameter, for example, is an operator controlled factor. It will adversely affect most bolts. An over-sized diameter reduces, or even eliminates, the anchorage capability of a mechanical shell. It will reduce the support capacity of a split set to nearly nothing. And it will cause a partial or incomplete grouting around the resin bolt. Frequently, due to bit wear, holes are drilled undersized in diameter and may not be properly cleaned out. In this case, it will be difficult for the operator to push the mechanical shell into the hole, thereby causing him to drill another hole. In cases where the bolt is obviously not providing anchorage, operators will probably drill another hole and place another bolt. Rock Bolt Regulations It is the situations where a bolt is improperly installed in the hole, but gives the appearance of a good bolt, that are frightening. In fact, some safety officials and engineers believe that only 50% to 60% of installed bolts are working. These bolts cause irregular ground load transfers in other bolts and overload them. This causes hazardous situations and overstressing. It is these bolts that fail prematurely 200 to 255 mm (8 to 10 in.) behind the face and possibly contribute to the high accident rate. The government and several manufacturers recognized the need to check the integrity of rock bolts. These programs are in different stages today. Diesel engine particulate matter pollution is a matter of concern currently in underground mines worldwide. A number of real-time Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) monitors have been developed in recent years; two of these by the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) in the US. One, the D-PDM, is based on an adaption of the successful NIOSH?s Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) unit which is being taken up very successfully for mine respirable dust monitoring. The D-PDM measures all particulate matter within a sub-micron range as classified nominally at 0.8 micrometers by a purpose developed cyclone. The other, the FLIR Airtec, measures the Elemental Carbon (EC) component of DPM by a laser scattering approach. Both instruments have been evaluated underground in robustness and reliability testing in coal mines by the authors. Real time DPM monitors allow greater understanding of the sources and levels of DPM pollution in underground activities. They allow engineering evaluations to determine how conditions can be improved or mining personnel relocated to lower concentration levels. Studies are discussed that examine DPM concentrations from vehicles under varying ventilation conditions. Some of these concern tests undertaken during high activity longwall face moves. They focus on evaluating DPM during the various phases of the face Chock Shield moves. An initiative in some mines has been to limit the number of vehicles in the mining section or panel by the use of a Tag Board or Traffic Controller at the panel travel road entrance to manage exhaust DPM and gases. Diesel tags or tokens are used to control the number of vehicles entering a section or panel and so limit level of pollution. Summation of DPM levels from points monitored throughout a panel demonstrates increasing DPM levels from influence of additional equipment in series within the ventilation circuit. An alternative approach is to invest in underground continuous real-time monitoring of exhaust gases, DPM and section air quantity and integrate this information to determine whether an additional vehicle can enter without exceeding diesel target limit. This optimizes the access of diesel vehicles and replaces the existing manual tag board system. Real-time DPM monitoring allows the industry to pin-point high exposure zones such as those encountered where various vehicles work in areas of constrained or difficult ventilation. Identification of high DPM zones allows efficient modification of mine ventilation, operator positioning and other work practices to reduce underground miners? exposures.

Our objective was to develop a transfer function model of phosphate heap leaching for design, optimization and control. The procedure included analysis of time-lapse photography of a laboratory heap. Our experimental results confirm the predicted system transfer function kinetics. Our conclusion was that the transfer function and z transform that we have developed will allow us to control flow rate and pH online.

National Grid needs to maintain a connection between two existing electricity sub-stations (Beddington & Rowdown) in the Croydon (south London) area, and allow the replacement of two 275 kV cable circuits that are buried under roads. This is to be achieved using a single 400 kV cable circuit within a 10 km (6.25 mile) long, 3 m (9.8 ft) diameter high voltage cable tunnel which is being driven through water bearing Chalk, at depths ranging from 5 m (15 ft) to 80 m (262 ft), with four access shafts(12.5 m (41 ft) in diameter) ranging in depth from 10 m (31 ft) to 40 m (131 ft). The Chalk in this area acts as a source of public drinking water supply (PWS) and is protected by areas designated Groundwater Source Protection Zones. To minimise the groundwater risk the design and construction of the cable tunnel and shafts has paid particular attention to the construction materials used, including testing of these construction materials prior to use, developing construction methods (including the design of the Earth Pressure Balance TBM) and maintaining a groundwater monitoring & testing programme prior to and during construction to ensure the integrity of the Chalk aquifer is maintained as a drinking water source. This paper describes the tunnel &shaft design and construction in relation to these particular groundwater environmental issues which set new precedents for tunnel assessment, design and construction requirements in the United Kingdom.
