The problems associated with squeezing rock conditions in tunnels are well known and have been extensively investigated in the past. Although squeezing conditions are predominantly found in tunnels developed in weak rock types it has been noted at the No. 6 Shaft of Hartebeestfontein Mine where the host rock consists of hard, brittle quartzites. This paper investigates typical time-dependent deformation mechanisms in the rock at Hartebeestfontein Mine. The paper will focus on observations made in a strike-orientated tunnel that intersected weak quartzite layers, that were sandwiched between two competent quartzite beds. The observed squeezing mechanism is dominated by creep along bedding planes with a soft talcaceous infilling that behaves in a clay-like fashion when saturated in water. Stress-induced deformation processes, some distance into the sidewall of the excavation, force the already fractured periphery of the excavation into the void. A laboratory study of the creep of intact rock and discontinuities collected at this site was conducted to characterize the time-dependent behaviour. The difference in creep rates between the two types of quartzite found at this site is described in the paper. Creep tests performed on the talcaceous infilling material found that its presence allows substantial shear creep along discontinuities. Attempts were also made to simulate the squeezing mechanism observed underground with numerical techniques. Due to the discontinuous nature of the mechanism described above, a viscoplastic displacement discontinuity technique was used as it allowed for the explicit simulation of discontinuity creep. The results of the modelling and how it compared with the observed behaviour are described in the paper. Environmental impact statement The work described in this paper will not cause any new, or contribute to any existing, hazards confronting the environment.

The characterization of platinum group minerals (PGMs) from concentrator flotation circuits provides valuable information towards understanding PGM recovery under given milling and flotation conditions. Additional mineralogical characterization also provides information on ore variability, which may affect recovery. Considering the low grades involved, automated scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization of PGMs has enabled relatively quick analyses, compared with older, time consuming and less accurate optical microscopy methods. Over the years, parameters, such as species, size distribution, liberation, gangue and base metal sulfide (BMS) associations, have been used to characterize the PGMs in a process mineralogical context, to aid metallurgical interpretation. This paper considers whether flotation indices determined for PGMs can be empirically validated, using initial results from analysis of PGMs in a concentrate bank from a South African concentrator treating UG2 ore from the western limb of the Bushveld Complex. The aim is to determine whether floatability is adequately described by these parameters, or whether other mineralogical factors must be considered when assessing PGM floatability, and hence accounting for recovery vs. losses to tails. The data obtained to date, show that flotation parameters (including liberation index, BMS/gangue relationships and size distribution) have merits where large changes in PGM concentration occur, as observed in the first four cells of the concentrate bank. Larger data sets, however, are required to assess floatability, particularly where concentrate cell grades are similar, as observed in the last six cells of the concentrate bank. Furthermore, the floatability indices could be enhanced by the incorporation of selected associated gangue mineral information, chief amongst these being the content and mode of occurrence of naturally floatable talc and associated orthopyroxene.

ABSTRACT: The technique of various kinds of numerical analysis offered remarkable results to explication of many rock mechanical phenomena. These techniques regarded a rock stratum as a continuum body and solved the governing equation of continuum mechanics by using finite differ-ence method, finite element method and/or others. Using numerical analysis based on continuum mechanics, however, the simulations of destruction phenomena caused by elastic waves and on the other hand, the elastic wave propagation which generated by fracturing events are quite difficult. In this paper, we express a rock stratum by a granular body model and develop a simulation tech-nique can simulate both wave phenomena and destruction phenomena at once. The DEM (discrete element method) simulation results are compared with finite difference solutions of elastic wave equation. Furthermore, we simulate Hopkinson effect by this proposed method. Hopkinson effect is famous as a destruction phenomenon caused by elastic wave propagation. ABRISS: In dieser Studie drücken wird eine Felsschicht durch ein Granularkörpermodell aus und entwickeln eine Simulationstechnik, die sowohl Wellenphänomene als auch Zerstörungsphänomene simulieren kann. Die Ergebnisse der Simulation mit DEM (Diskrete-Elemente-Methode) werden mit denen der Finit-Differenz-Lösung von Gleichungen elastischer Wellen verglichen. Desweiteren simulierten wir den Hopkinson-Effekt mit dieser vorgeschlagenen Methode. Der Hopkinson-Effekt ist als Zerstörungsphänomen berühmt, verursacht durch Fortpflanzung elastischer Wellen. RESUME: Dans cette étude, nous exprimons un lit de roches par un modèle à corps granulaire et développons une technique, permettant de simuler d'un coup le phénomène des ondes et le phé-nomène de destruction. Les résultats de la simulation DEM (méthode d'éléments discrets) sont comparés aux solutions à différence finie de l'équation d'ondes élastiques. En outre, nous simulons l'effet d'Hopkinson par la méthode proposée. L'effet d'Hopkinson est connu comme phénomène de destruction, causé par la propagation d'ondes élastiques.

This paper is based on a project conducted at Khomanani 2 shaft, Anglo American Platinum Limited. The main objective was to find an alternative support element in stopes to address the falls of ground (FOG) problem experienced at this shaft. Literature review was the major method used in the investigations. Resin bolts or any 1.5 m in-stope roofbolts were considered. The shaft was making use of 0.9 m long friction bolts, and these could not prevent the FOG experienced. Observations indicated that the FOG resulted in fall-out thicknesses averaging to 1.1 m, which is greater than the supported length of the friction bolts. The implementation of 1.5 m long bolts was recommended as a result of the project. These bolts will be able to address the fall-out thickness and provide sufficient support resistance to mitigate FOG. The chosen support element will result in a relatively small increase in support costs.

ABSTRACT: The Berg Bock Freeway Tunnel represents the southernmost link of the "Thuringian tunnel chain" of the new freeway A71 located in the eastern part of Germany. It comprises two tubes each 2700 m in length. From north to south, it passes through the Suhl granite, the base sediments and the porphyrite of the New Red as well as the layers of the Middle Bunter. The two tunnel tubes were driven by the shotcrete method within appr. 10 months. With four tunnel faces, maximum performances totalling appr. 30 m/d were attained. Additional, supplementary demands on the safety conception, resulting from the findings from and the analysis of fire accidents in tunnels in recent years, had to be fulfilled in the execution planning at short notice. The inner lining is largely constructed using non-reinforced concrete. Reinforcement is only installed in the portal zones, in tunnel sections in less stable rock and in areas with a special cross-section as for instance cross connections and niches. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Autobahntunnel Berg Bock stellt das südlichste Glied der "Thüringer Tunnelkette" auf der Autobahn A71 dar, die im Osten von Deutschland liegt. Er besteht aus zwei Röhren von je 2700 m Länge. Vom Norden nach Süden durchörtert er den Suhler Granit, die Basissedimente und den Porphyrit des Rotliegenden, sowie die Schichten des Mittleren Buntsandsteins. Die beiden Tunnelröhren wurden in Spritzbetonbauweise in einer Bauzeit von etwa zehn Monaten aufgefahren. An vier Vortriebsorten wurden Spitzenleistungen von insgesamt etwa 30 m/d erzielt. Ergänzende Anforderungen an das Sicherheitskonzept, die sich auf der Grundlage der Auswertung der in den letzten Jahren aufgetretenen Brandunfälle in Tunneln ergeben haben, wurden im Rahmen der Ausführungsplanung kurzfristig berücksichtigt. Die Tunnelinnenschale wurde weitgehend aus nicht bewehrtem Beton hergestellt. Nur in den Portalzonen, in Tunnelabschnitten mit weniger standsicherem Fels und in Bereichen mit speziellen Querschnitten, wie beispielsweise im Bereich von Querstollen und Nischen, wurde bewehrter Beton ausgeführt. RÉSUMÉ: Le tunnel d'autoroute de Berg Bock représente le plus méridional maillon de la "chaîne thuringienne de tunnels" sur l'autoroute A71 dans l'est de l'Allemagne. Il se compose de deux tubes d'une longueur de 2700 m chacun. Du nord vers le sud, il traverse le granit de Suhl, les sédiments de base et le porphyrite du Rotliegendes, aussi que les strates du grès bigarré intermédiaire. Les deux tubes étaient creusés en méthode de construction de béton projeté dans une période de construction d'environ dix mois. À quatre fronts de taille rendements maximaux collectifs d'environ 30 m par jour étaient obtenus. On a eu égard à court terme dans la conception d'exécution à des demandes supplémentaires vers la conception de sécurité, qui ont résulté sur la base de l'interprétation des accidents d'incendie dans des tunnels dans les années dernières. La paroi intérieure était construite largement de béton non armé.

The socio economic risks of mining in South Africa have been emerging for some time now, and have been brought into sharp relief by recent events in the platinum sector. The slow pace of social upliftment in the country has lead to widespread social unrest with consequent calls for different forms of resource nationalism. Fundamentally, the key stakeholders are not fully aligned, and are not engaging productively. This poses significant above-the-ground risk to mining companies. Measuring social impact, deploying inclusive solutions and engaging effectively with stakeholders are three ways in which mining companies can mitigate this risk. Leinster Nickel Operations, located in Western Australia, consists of an underground and three open pit mines in relatively adverse ground conditions. This paper reviews our ground control practices in the open pits, covering aspects of ground support, wall control and monitoring. These methods have been effective in allowing mining operations to continue beneath unstable slopes. In particular, the use of Ground probe?s slope stability radar has enabled the Harmony open pit to safely operate for months following indication of failure from traditional methods. This case study highlights the benefits of investing in appropriate slope stability monitoring systems.

The semi-solid metal casting process results in a unique solidification path. The microstructural features that were identified during the characterization of the as-cast microstructure, were used as evidence of the process history in order to determine the solidification path followed during the evolution of the microstructure. The morphology of the grains was characterized using SEM and the extent and distribution of the elemental segregation within the grain structure was analysed using EDS. Physical modelling is one of the research tools in the understanding of the failure mechanisms and the deformations likely to be experienced by the strata during mining operations. Success of the physical models to predict the strata behaviour depends on satisfaction of the scaling requirements in modelling material used. This paper gives results from a laboratory work carried out into the factors influencing the strength and elastic properties of a physical model material to satisfy the scaling requirements determined from application of dimensional analysis to the pertinent variables affecting the deformation and failure of the underground structures. It was found that the conditions for preparing the material over its composition had a great influence on the final properties. The effect of different water quantities, sand size and mixing time upon the properties of modelling material was studied and water requirement for different proportions of sand/plaster to prepare the material was optimized. Various sand/plaster ratios of compositions were cured at three different levels of oven temperatures. Curing at low temperature produced material within the average modulus ratios ranging from 290 to 432, which are common to most rock types according to Deere?s rock classification, whilst curing at high temperature produced material within the low modulus ratios ranging from 64 to 140 depending on its composition. A combination of low and high temperature curing resulted with an increase in modulus ratio compared to high temperature curing. Curing the material at low temperature compared to other curing temperatures provided a satisfactory range of strength ratio. It has been shown that the relative amount of filler to plaster in the mix controls the frictional properties of the material and results with an increase in strength and modulus ratio of the material provided that suggested preparation and curing conditions were applied. Model material developed by curing at low temperature simulated modulus ranging from 241 to 343 and strength ratios ranging from 11.6 to14.8 of a coal mine rocks, satisfactorily.

This research report was produced in response to the release of the Mineral and Petroleum Royalty Bill. It involved are view of the mineral investment environments of selected countries in order to form an opinion on the appropriateness and competitiveness of the proposed royalty structure for South Africa. Many emerging countries have recently attracted a significant share of foreign investment, as a direct result of changes in policy. These are, by implication, the least risky and most favourable destinations for the ?investment dollar?. The five most competitive countries, namely Chile, Argentina, Peru, Mexico and Brazil have been identified as succeeding with their policy visions of creating favourable domestic investment environments. The investment rules of these countries served as a basis for the compilation of a Competitive Investment Framework (CIF). This is a template of best practice against which other investment environments, such as that of South Africa, can be measured. The framework indicates that mineral royalties should ideally be no more than three per cent, demonstrating that the regime proposed in the Royalty Bill is out of step with international best practice. Mineral royalties can never be viewed in isolation and in the assessment of the rates proposed in the Royalty Bill, one must consider the total taxation package. Such assessment appears in Section 5 of this report, demonstrating that there is reason for concern if National Treasury were to impose the rates stipulated in the Royalty Bill. The alternatives, conclusion and recommendations of the review appear in Sections 9 and 10. These are the result of independent analysis and assessment of the fundamental principles. It is done through the application of a Competitive Investment Framework that avoids the highly subjective and emotional views that often accompany a process like this.

Of the approximately 6,500 kimberlites known to date, less than 3% are diamondiferous and less than half of those are economically viable. Admittedly, this is a global figure and varies from area to area much depending on geological, logistical, and political circumstances. The number of diamond-bearing kimberlites is an important geobarometer, and an age-frequency profile has been compiled in order to identify diamond metallogenic epochs and provinces. Four primary diamond clusters have been recognized: Siberia (332-370Ma), Kaapvaal South(114-144Ma), Kaapvaal Southwest(84-95Ma), and Slave (52-55Ma). In addition, three secondary clusters are the Kaapvaal Central (S06-S38Ma), the Man Craton (139-lS3Ma) and the Kasai Craton (120-130Ma). The Kaapvaal is the only area where kimberlites with diamonds were discovered between 1870 and 1925, except for the Prairie Creek discovery in North America in 1906 and Colossus in Zimbabwe in 1907. Between 1906 and 1940 no major diamondiferous kimberlites were discovered, but many of Africa's alluvial deposits were found and exploited in that period. Advances in scientific prospecting in the 1940's rapidly accelerated the discovery rate that peaked in the 1990's; 39 diamondiferous occurrences were found in the 1980's, of which 8 became mines and 5 are in feasibility, and nearly 450ha of kimberlite was added to the global resource base. Despite the accelerated exploration expenditure, the last decade (e.g. 2000-2009) has been the leanest since the 1940's. The most important reason for this decline in exploration success is that any undiscovered deposits are largely buried by younger cover. Understanding complex and geophysical noisy basement geology, as well as decomposition of path-finder minerals are major challenges to further exploration success. Major investments in basic geological expertise and field research will have to be made in order to secure future diamond resources. Integrated geophysical studies, geochemistry diamond forensics, and improved imaging of Earth's upper mantle are perhaps foremost in this requirement, but the costs of these activities are such that government support will be required if countries are to sustain their diamond mining industry.

Rock density determinations are necessary for ore resource evaluations from estimated block grades in g/t. Rock density depends on the mineral composition and, thus, it is specific for each rock type. The rock density distributions for different rock types are often symmetric. Hence, the arithmetic mean is a good approximation for the average density for lithological units. However, there may exist spatial variation in density values due to alteration, fracturing and original heterogeneities such as layering. This study compares the kriged density model with the one with constant density values for different lithological units in the evaluation of metal amounts in rock blocks. The case study consisted of rock densities measured from the drill cores at Ahmavaara PGE deposit in northern Finland. The used Ni contents were simulated in accordance with the spatial distribution of rock densities. The Ni amounts in 2x2x2 m3blocks are higher for the kriged densities than for the average densities. The difference is increasing with the increasing metal amounts due to the nonlinear correlation between Ni content and rock density. The final effect on the resource estimation depends on the cutt off grade and prices of the metal, for example, for a very valuable metal the small differences are significant

In order to deliver a quality shotcrete and concrete product underground for the extensions to the Cullinan Diamond Mine operations it was decided to develop a new, simpler concrete product to meet underground support requirements. The aim was to develop a concrete product that not only reduced costs but also met the performance criteria of the current range of concrete products used on Cullinan Diamond Mine, a 25, 45 and 60 MPa concrete and a fibre reinforced wet shotcrete. The concrete product batching and delivery system was to be from surface as opposed to the current underground batching systems. The operational principle was to include an automated surface batching plant with delivery of the concrete product to a borehole containing suspended pipelines delivering to an underground storage facility from where the product is delivered to the working area by further pumping or agicars. The establishment of a pilot plant for the continuous production of titania pigment and nano-titania is discussed. The plant was designed, constructed and operated on the Necsa site. The TiO2 production capacity is 7?10 kg.h-1 by the reaction of TiCl4 and O2at>1000°C. Liquid TiCl4 is sprayed under pressure into a plasma reactor where it evaporates and reacts with O2 to form TiO2. Process optimization has allowed for continuous production without any clogging or blockages. The primary advantage of the plasma-assisted process is the possibility to recover and recycle the chlorine values in high yield as Cl2 for use in the manufacture of TiCl4. The HCl formed in most conventional fossil-fuelled processes makes Cl2 recovery and recycling much more difficult. Particle size distribution analysis of the fine, white product revealed a d50= 125 nm. The raw product consisted of 60% rutile that could be increased to 80?100% rutile by post-annealing. The specific surface area (SSA) of the pigment was 8?20 m2?g-1(BET). According to the CIE colour index the ?whiteness? (L*>95) of the plasma-produced pigment was better than that of several commercially available pigments. The particle size could be manipulated by controlling the TiCl4 feed rate, gas flowrates, and the particle quench rate and residence time. Nano-sized TiO2 powders with a particles size (d50) as small as 50 nm were also successfully produced in this way.

The French research institute, INERIS, requested the assistance of the CSIR?s Division of Mining Technology in developing further precautionary measures against explosions in their collieries. In response to this approach, an on-board active suppression system was adapted to meet their mining requirements. This system is used on tunnelling machines in Germany where the machine is positioned in the middle of the tunnel, which is therefore not much wider than the machine itself. With this configuration, the machine is never away from the tunnel face during the cutting cycle. As a result, the possible volume in front of the machine of combustible gas requiring suppression is less than 50 m3. In South Africa this technology has been adapted to suit a two-cut mining method which entails greater distances from the face and thus much larger volumes of methane mixtures requiring suppression. The particular configuration of the Explo-Stop® system being investigated required the suppression of possible methane ignition volumes of up to 180 m3of a 9% per volume methane/air mixture. The volume is a consequence of the large cross-sectional area of French underground workings and of the two-cut mining method used in France. In order to take the second cut in the coal seam, the machine is pulled back a maximum distance of 4 m, leaving an air pocket in which gas can accumulate. The machine-mounted system is required to effectively suppress any flame ignited by such a large accumulated volume of methane. The results of the protocol tests done at Kloppersbos showed that the system was capable of suppressing all simulated methane ignitions for the prescribed conditions. This was achieved with a temperature increase of less than a 100°C at the operator?s position and without any flame being detected at this position.

Mining is an inherently risky business; from the technical, environmental, social, and economic uncertainties associated with advancing an exploration prospect to a viable project to the operating, market, and safety risks and uncertainties attached to a developed mine. Since we cannot totally escape the risk and uncertainty related to resource projects, as an industry we should improve our presentation of the upside and downside risks in the context of the project?s development path and maturity. More transparent, consistent, and balanced views of technical confidence will better inform both internal and external stakeholders about the expected risk in the project. International reporting codes set out the minimum standards, recommendations, and guidelines for public reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources, and Mineral Reserves. However, the reporting code principles of transparency and materiality are largely subject to the interpretation of the competent person(s), which may introduce a degree of subjectivity in reporting, particularly the level of disclosure regarding supporting information. It is fundamental that Mineral Resources, Mineral Reserves, and study outcomes are reported so as to unambiguously present the level of inherent technical uncertainty (or confidence) in a project, while conveying a balanced view of the opportunities a project presents. Reporting needs to consider various stakeholders who may rely on this information, and present the data in the context of the changing risk profile associated with project development paths and project maturity. This paper discusses the interdependence of resource-to-reserve conversion, the consideration of various technical-economic study types, and the level of confidence conveyed to stakeholders relying on these technical reports and other company public announcements.

The latest Draft MPRRB was released for public comment in October 2006. The main purpose of the Bill is to collect royalties at mines developed in terms of new-order mineral rights granted through the MPRDA process. The transition phase stipulated in the MPRDA will be completed by 1 May 2009, on which date mineral royalties will become payable to the state. The royalty rates stated in the MPRRB differ from mineral to mineral and also depend on the degree of refinement. Gold is the subject of this paper, where the royalty rate ranges from 1.5% (for refined gold) to 3% (for unrefined gold) of sales revenue. This royalty is payable regardless of profit, with a maximum 75% relief for loss-making mines. The purpose of this paper is to establish whether or not it would be necessary for gold mines to adjust their mineral reserve statements as a result of this Bill. The methodology is to add the royalty costs stipulated in the MPRRB to the actual quarterly information for the past ten years as reported by the gold-mine members of the COM. The rationale is to investigate the impact this Bill (in its current form) would have had on gold reserves that must be left unmined in the ground because of a higher pay limit. The results of the study point to a significant impact on reserves available for mining with the subsequent shortening of mine lives and retrenchment of workers. Had the MPRRB been effective for the 10 years prior to 1996, it would have resulted in 46 tonnes of gold being sterilised. Stated alternatively, 30 700 workers at COM gold mines alone would have lost their livelihoods.

Historically, mine ventilation practices as it was referred to then and which was enforced by legislation of those days, focused primarily on the conditions in the working place and little attention given to actual exposures of workers to contaminants in the working environments. With the advent of the Leon Commission of Inquiry into Safety and Health in the South African Mining industry in 1994, findings in the report indicated that more attention should be given to occupational health of workers. The upshot of this report resulted in the promulgation of the new Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) with certain sections of it devoted to all the aspects of occupational medicine and occupational hygiene. This paper describes the present situation with regards to statistics on occupational hygiene performance and compensation paid out to persons who have contracted occupational diseases, as well as the way forward in terms of legislation implemented in September 2002 on the chronic and acute issues affecting the mining industry in SA.
