Mintek was contracted by Oriel Resources plc in 2004 to conduct a preliminary assessment study on smelting ferronickel from the large but relatively low grade Shevchenko nickel ore deposit in Kazakhstan. A detailed feasibility study (?DFS?) was awarded to Bateman BV following promising results from the preliminary assessment study (?PAS?) and small-scale pilot plant test work. As part of the DFS, a total of 450metric tons of ore was collected from three different locations in the deposit and shipped to Mintek. After sampling, the bulk sample was prepared for smelting. This comprised crushing, screening and calcining with each step done separately for the three different lots. The chemical composition of the ore from the deposit is relatively high in silica and therefore falls out of the MgO to SiO2 range that is normally processed by pyrometallurgical means to produce ferronickel. The main objective of the testwork was to demonstrate that a method could be found and successfully applied to smelt these siliceous ores and produce an acceptable nickel-containing alloy. A 2-m ID DC arc furnace was installed with a twin-cathode (electrode) configuration to replicate the proposed commercial-scale furnace and also incorporated an advanced design of water-cooled copper panels in the lower furnace sidewalls to withstand the aggressive nature of the high SiO2-containing slags. The reductant used was a high-volatile coal from Karaganda in Kazakhstan. The reductant addition was adjusted to achieve a 90% recovery of nickel. In the assessment of the process metallurgy, some deviation from equilibrium conditions was observed. This deviation is ascribed to the intermittent existence of a smelting bath partially covered with feed during the testwork. Optimization of smelting conditions should result in the metallurgy (slag metal equilibrium) being closer to the theoretical predictions and make the production of a 20% nickel alloy possible at 90% nickel recovery. The solution for the successful processing of these siliceous ores was found in the attainment of the necessary operational stability through the control of arc length, operating temperature, open-bath smelting conditions and flux additions of up to 10% dolime for the most siliceous of the three ore types. The test work carried out by Mintek provided the basis for the process flow sheet and engineering design of the DC arc smelting furnaces for the Shevchenko Nickel project.

3D seismic surveys have become a well-accepted method of imaging sub-surface geology in the Bushveld Basin. Because both the seismic sources and receivers are placed at surface, most surveys are limited to imaging faults with >=7 m throw. However, some areas such as shaft infrastructure can benefit from the ability to detect smaller structures prior to shaft sinking. Borehole radar and logs such as the acoustic televiewer can identify these structures in the shaft barrel, but not within -200 m from the shaft. Therefore, Anglo Platinum has developed the method of high-resolution 3D vertical seismic profiles (VSPs) for structural sterilization of shaft sites prior to shaft sinking. VSPs utilize a surface source and sub-surface receivers deployed down a borehole. This means that seismic energy goes through the near surface only once, and therefore suffers less frequency loss than when both source and receivers are on surface. Furthermore, VSPs can record 3 component (3C) data which comprises P wave, Sh (horizontal) and Sv (vertical) wavemodes. Because S waves travel at about 0.6 of the velocity of a P wave, shorter wavelengths and therefore higher resolutions are possible using S wave data. VSPs were first used in their one dimensional, zero offset, mode to correlate borehole geology with seismic stratigraphy within seismic surveys. This showed that VSPs record -30% higher frequencies than surface seismic surveys. The program then applied two dimensional VSPs to the problem of imaging geological structure close to a borehole. 2D VSPs confirmed that high frequency results could be achieved, and that this enabled a more accurate image of the Merensky Reef than could be achieved by surface seismic data. Finally, the program has achieved the successful recording and processing of 3D VSP data, with both compressional and shear wavemodes giving a high resolution structural result. Although P wave data gives -30% frequency improvement over surface seismic surveys, S wave data can give as much as 80% improvement, further improving the structural image achieved. The high fixed costs of VSP surveys mean that they should ideally be run in multi-client batches, which can reduce the per borehole cost by up to 50%. Their application is anticipated to be on high value capital infrastructure with a geological risk from faults which are not imaged by surface seismics-generally in the sub-7 m range. Société le Nickel (SLN) exploits the Dôme lateritic nickel orebody at its Tiébaghi operations in New Caledonia. The site geology has an obvious bearing on recovery and metallurgical performance, and the controls are extremely complex at all scales: lithology, oxidation-reduction conditions, mineralogy, and multivariate geochemistry. In that context, establishing an adapted recoverable resource estimation method that is efficient and transparent proves an interesting challenge. The method must address the key notions of: ? Support effect: the exploration data-set can only warrant the estimation of large panels 20×20×3 m3, which are much larger than the selective mining units (SMUs) of 5×5×3 m3 ? Information effect: the selection at production stage uses estimates based on information much denser than that available for mine planning. The problem is rendered more complex in this type of deposit by the fact that the additive variables used for any estimation process (metal accumulation and ore tonnage) are not the ones used to establish the selection at mining stage (i.e. the nickel grade of SMUs, which is the ratio of accumulation on tonnage). Eventually, the selection criteria involve not only Ni grades but also other constituents such as Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO, and SiO2. The solution presented in this paper is the construction of a platform of SMU multivariate simulations in the saprolitic horizon, together with efficient post-processing aimed at producing the multivariate recoverable resource estimates. The efficiency constraints imposed by the number of blocks to be simulated (1.5 million) lead to resorting to direct block simulations. The underlying multivariate discrete Gaussian model (DGM), the validity of which is tested beforehand, is put to good use to mimic the selection process at the mining stage, by offering the ability to simulate in each block a composite value located at random within the block. Finally, the paper presents the application of a scenario reduction algorithm to pick a representative subset of a few simulations to help appraise the risk attached to the downstream phases (reserve optimization, mine sequencing) of the project. The implementation presented here is for the first generation of the Scenario Reduction plugin built in Isatis software, where measuring the distance between the initial set of scenarios and the reduced set is based on Ni quantities only. Research is under way to adapt the measure to the true multivariate nature of the problem.

This distinction affects the nature and understanding of security of tenure and, consequently, the perception of what constitutes fair value. Legal matters are a particular concern because of their influence on security of tenure, ownership definition and use restrictions. The dynamics of the market and the complex interrelationships between the factors of production define value at a specific point in time for the bundle of rights, interests and assets that constitute a mineral property. Because each mineral property is unique, physically immobile and of a wasting nature, its usefulness to its owner and society must be optimized. The US Appraisal Institute (2001) classified the forces that affect land use as the cultural, political and economic attitudes of society. These forces culminate in laws that often dictate the purposes for doing appraisals. Once the legal definition of the asset is understood, valuers can decide on the valuation process that will support the final valuation approach.

Early research showed that the separation of particles based upon their density was not possible in steadily rising air streams. The terminal velocities of moving spheres are determined by their aerodynamic characteristics. This prevents particle separation by density in standard air classifiers. Passive pulsing air classifiers have accelerated airflow in certain regions, which achieves density-dominant separation. Numerical simulation of airflow within passive pulsing air classifiers was done to estimate airflow patterns near a damper. Analysis of those results shows the significant acceleration of the airflow above the damper. Laboratory trial separations have shown that passive pulsing classifiers are superior to standard air classifiers. The aqueous chemistry of niobium and tantalum compounds with hydrofluoric acid is a mature field of investigation. In contrast, very little attention has been paid to reactions of these compounds in non-aqueous environments. Similarly, reactions of elemental fluorine with niobium and tantalum compounds have received little more than cursory attention in literature. This work discusses the isothermal reaction kinetics derived from thermogravimetry, using a less redundant approach than is currently the standard. We also discuss the most likely kinetic models for this reaction.

Steel is a highly versatile material due to its low cost and good mechanical properties, but typically needs some or other form of corrosion protection due to its tendency to corrode when exposed to atmospheric conditions. In the case of organic coatings, the corrosion protection and functionality of the final product is critically dependent on the adhesion of the coating to the surface of the steel. In this work the effect of contaminants and the nature of the surface layers present on industrial steel products are investigated by means of paint adhesion tests, Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that the presence of sodium species on the surface is very detrimental to paint adhesion under wet conditions, while satisfactory adhesion may be obtained even in the presence of silicon and carbon residues. It was also found that the nature of the Fe-O layer, formed under wet conditions is labile and different from that formed in dry air, and that subtle changes in process conditions, such as changing the oxygen content of the quench water, may change the adhesion of paint to the surface of the steel. Lewis acid-base interactions are discussed as a mechanism that may determine the bonding between the steel and polymer coating.

This paper summarizes important features of a compilation of thermal properties of stratified rocks from Witwatersrand gold mining areas. The database consists of more than 1000 thermal conductivity measurements, more than 700 density measurements, and nearly 100 heat capacity measurements. Most important rock types and stratigraphic units are well represented. Heat capacity does not differ significantly from one rock type to another, and density is relatively uniform although particular rock types are characterized by distinct average values. Different rock types also have distinct thermal conductivities, but this parameter varies by a factor of four to five. Primary factors controlling the thermal properties are mineral composition, degree of metamorphism, and porosity. In addition, the temperature dependence of thermal conductivity and heat capacity of quartzite may significantly decrease the thermal diffusivity of this rock at deep mining levels.

The design and operation of coal preparation plants are governed by the inherent quality of the raw coal to be processed, market specifications and the saleable tonnage requirements. Topography influences the layout of the plant but does not affect the process design. The coal market comprises many sectors, each having specific requirements with respect to both size and quality. In turn, these have led to different levels of preparation and the development of specific types of coal preparation plant design. Developments in processing techniques and processing equipment have also influenced the design and now give the preparation engineer numerous permutations in process and equipment selection. This paper gives an overview of the coal industry in general and summarizes some of the developments in the design of plants and technical developments in the areas of dense medium processing, fine coal treatment and equipment design.

The paper provides a brief review of a multivariate uniform conditioning and a localized multivariate uniform conditioning (LMUC) technique, and presents a production reconciliation case study based on a porphyry copper-gold deposit in Peru. The reconciliation study compares the longterm LMUC mineral resources model (typical of new mining projects, which are invariably based on drilling data on a relatively large grid) to the corresponding production blast-hole grade control model, as well as the final plant production.

Metal mining operations, in particular gold mining operations, use intensive ore control procedures in order to manage the extraction of ore zones from benches containing both ore and waste material. Typical grade control procedures rely on blast hole samples to indicate ore grade. Statistical techniques and geological controls are then used to create two-dimensional polygons, which indicate zones of material designated as ore. These ore-polygons are calculated using pre-blast material locations and are generally not corrected for rock movement caused by blasting. This lack of correction appears to exacerbate the material mischaracterization problem of sending ore to the waste dump and/or waste to the mill. One Nevada gold mining company has estimated that this could be a $10 million per year problem for their operations. Using a simplified vector field algorithm, a method of taking point movement data and interpolating post-blast positions for all nodes in a polygon has been developed. Currently working in 2-dimentions (X-Y), this algorithm utilizes the movement vectors calculated from pre-and post-blast positions of targets placed in a blast, to generate a spatial transformation function for any point on the bench. This transformation is then applied to the nodes of the ore-polygons to produce modified dig lines ore polygons reflecting distortion and movement resulting from the blast. The method as implemented uses common mine planning routines and is performed using the Surpac software suite. The method may be adapted to use any pre-and post-blast point movement data available, and most mine planning suites include the simple interpolation algorithms used. The work is being done using the Thermo-CalcTM software, and the database is being built up by obtaining good thermodynamic descriptions of all of the possible phases in the system. The database supplied did not cover all of the phases, and these had to be gleaned from literature, or modelled using experimental data. Similarly, not all of the experimental data were known, and where there were gaps or inconsistencies, experiments had to be undertaken. A preliminary version of the database was constructed from assessed thermodynamic data-sets for the binary systems only. The binary descriptions were combined allowing extrapolation into the ternary systems, and experimental phase equilibrium data were compared with calculated results. Very good agreement was obtained for the Pt-Al-Ru and Pt-Cr-Ru systems, which was encouraging and confirmed that the higher-order systems could be calculated from the binary systems with confidence. Since some of the phase models in databases were different, these phases had to be remodelled. However, more work is ongoing for information concerning the ternary phases present in the Al-Cr-Ru, Pt-Al-Ru (two ternary compounds in each) and Pt-Al-Cr (possibly more than three ternary compounds) systems. At later stage of the work, problems with the thermodynamic descriptions of the Cr-Ru and Pt-Cr binary systems were found. The ever-increasing pressure on the profit margins of ferro-chrome producers and the gradual depletion of deposits of rich hard lumpy chrome ores calls for the ferrochrome industry to maximise the use of fine fractions of concentrates and friable chromite ores. Zimbabwe is endowed with huge deposits of refractory and friable ores that occur on and off the Great Dyke complex. The conventional metallurgical process of smelting of chromite ores in submerged arc furnaces is favoured by the use of refractory hard lumpy ores. The requirement to use all lumpy ore has been circumvented to a large extent at Zimbabwe Alloys. The use of briquetted chrome ore fines in the production of Ferrosilicon Chrome and High Carbon Ferrochrome has yielded positive results over a period in excess of twenty-five years. Of the three industrially used methods of agglomeration of chromite ores; sintering, pelletisation and briquetting, briquetting is preferred because the other two are associated with higher capital and operational cost. Zimbabwe Alloys has developed operational and technical expertise on the briquetting and utilisation of chromite ore fines and concentrates. Variations in the quality of available chromite ore fines imply that their amenability to briquetting is a dynamic problem. Appropriate briquetting parameters to guarantee quality briquettes are essential to the successful use of briquetted chromite ore fines. In developing a technology for briquetting of chromite ores, it is important not only to study the mineralogical and grain-size characteristics of the chromite ore fines but also to make an informed choice of the type and quantity of the binder and the conditions for producing a physically and chemically competent green and cured briquette. This paper discusses Zimbabwe Alloys' experience on the briquetting process and the advantages derived in the smelting of the briquetted chromite ore fines in comparison to the use of conventional lumpy chromite ore with respect to improvements in chromium recovery and as a consequence related efficiencies and unit cost of production.

A large opencast gold mining company in Africa had just completed a feasibility study for an expansion of the operations. A traditional net present value project valuation methodology had been used that showed a very positive net present value (NPV). The project team had conducted a qualitative risk assessment that identified and logged all potential project risks and had subjectively incorporated 'risk' via the discount rate and other assumption contingencies around gold price expectations, operating parameters, etc. Management requested that an independent quantitative risk modelling approach be adopted to obtain a better understanding of the impact of risk on the overall project valuation and confidence level in the final valuation. A detailed project valuation model was configured in the Cyest Carbon Modelling Technology platform, and the stochastic modelling module used to perform the Monte Carlo simulations. Analysis of historical operational performance data relating to actual achievements versus planned and budget determined the historical variability of the underlying parameters as well as variance to budget. This was done at a detailed level for mining rates and costs, processing rate, costs and recovery, and other operational efficiency measures. External market assumptions relating to gold price, exchange rate, and inflation were modelled and the dependency between them modelled using a copula. This case study will demonstrate the approach taken to building and populating the quantitative risk model and the overall results of the Monte Carlo simulation. The final valuation demonstrated that the project had a 44 percent probability of an NPV less than zero i.e. a 44 percent chance of project finance loss.

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is an electromagnetic geophysical reflection technique that maps reflections associated with a change in electric properties of the target medium. It can thus be used to map the geometry of geological features and fractures as these can have different electromagnetic properties to intact rock. GPR was used successfully to determine the position and nature of the fractures in the tunnel sidewall, in the area of the simulated rockburst experiment. By comparing the radar scans acquired before with those acquired after the blast, it was possible to determine which fractures were reactivated by the blast and where new fractures were developed. It was found that the mining-induced fractures that formed during the development of the tunnel were re-activated by the simulated rockburst, as indicated by their increased reflectance on the radar scans. In addition, several new tunnel sidewall parallel fractures developed in the area of the blastholes. GPR thus clearly shows how and where the fracture pattern changed as a result of the blast and contributed to the understanding of the mechanisms of damage associated with the blast, and perhaps rockbursts in general.

"Continuous mining systems containing multiple excavators producing multiple products of raw materials are highly complex, exhibiting strong interdependency between constituents. Furthermore, random variables govern the system, which causes uncertainty in the supply of raw materials: uncertainty in knowledge about the reserve, the quantity demanded by the customers, and the breakdown of equipment. This paper presents a stochastic-based mine process simulator capturing different sources of uncertainties. It aims to quantify the effect of geological uncertainty and its impacts on the ability to deliver contractually defined quantities and qualities of coal, and on the system efficiency in terms of utilization of major equipment. Two different areas of research are combined: geostatistical simulation for capturing geological uncertainty, and stochastic process simulation to predict the performance and reliability of a large continuous mining system.The process of modelling and simulation in this specific production environment is discussed in detail. Problem specification and a new integrated simulation approach are presented. A case study in a large coal mine is used to demonstrate the impacts and evaluate the results in terms of reaching optimal production control decisions to increase average equipment utilization and control coal quality and quantity. ?Longhole blast hole drilling? techniques are not new to the mining industry. Appropriate mechanization and improvement of the techniques and application has evolved from the industry requirements. Today safety and economics play a larger role in the excavation of ore passes, ventilation passes, and relatively small inclined excavations in the conventional gold and platinum industry. The application of dropraise drilling from the top or from the bottom is discussed investigating the current techniques available, DTH application, advantages and disadvantages, limiting factors, typical layouts and proposals, the drop raising technique and future applications. Similarly, the application of longhole blast hole drilling in tabular and massive orebodies is discussed with emphasis on the DTH application, advantages and disadvantages, limiting factors, typical layouts, the long hole stoping techniques and future applications.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, zinc, electrowinning Zincor has been producing zinc since 1969 via the roast-leach-electrowinning process. It is the only primary zinc producer in South Africa, and currently supplies the entire country with zinc. The plant was built by Goldfields of South Africa, on the site of an old gold and uranium mine. Since then, the ownership of the plant has changed a couple of times, and the plant and process have also been improved. Production output has increased from around 80 000 tons per year to more than 110 000 tons per year. This was done mainly through increasing the capacity of the roasters and acid plant. Zincor produces four main grades of zinc: SHG, Zn1, Zn2, and Zn4, in three shapes: a 25 kg ingot and 1 and 2 ton jumbos. In 2005, a pre-alloy furnace was built that enabled the production of jumbos pre-alloyed with aluminium. This has allowed Zincor's customers to improve the efficiency of their continuous galvanizing lines and to lower their production costs.
