Recently, a large Pittsburgh seam longwall mine was nearing depletion of a major portion of its current reserves and had begun to develop in a different direction from its original portal area to access additional reserves. This meant that a large area of the mine would be abandoned and sealed. However, continued use of the original mine portal area required that the water accumulating in the abandoned mine would eventually need to be pumped to the surface. This would be in addition to the discharge water associated with the new portion of the mine. Several pumping and sump options were investigated to handle the quantity and quality of the anticipated discharge water. This paper describes some of these options, their advantages and disadvantages, and the final engineering decisions. Some problems and unanticipated outcomes, as well as the eventual solutions are discussed, including: (1) estimates of pump requirements, (2) water pool size, (3) eventual water quality, (4) anticipated inflows, and (5) integration into the overall mine water system.

In Kansas, almost every oil well drilled into a limestone formation is treated with hydrochloric (muriatic) acid upon completion. This is done to increase the potential capacity of the well and thereby increase its "daily allowable" production (see p. 9), to shorten the time required to produce the recoverable oil, and to increase the quantity of oil recovered ultimately from the reservoir. The porosity and. permeability of limestone formations seldom are uniform throughout the proved area, consequently the production capacities of completed wells vary considerably. Acid treatment of wells tends to increase production capacity and to equalize potential capacity. If offset wells already have been treated with acid, new wells usually are treated to protect the property on which they are drilled against drainage. "Interest in the nitrogen content of steel has increased sharply in the last few years. Investigations have indicated that its presence in steel has an important bearing on high temperature brittleness3, magnetic properties4, room temperature hardening5, and shock resistance. The steel producer may therefore look forward with certaintly to the necessity of controlling this element in a considerable proportion of his product. The literature, however, reveals a great many contradictory statements concerning the percentage of nitrogen which must be present to produce given effects on the properties of iron and steel. Most of these arise from a misunderstanding of the nature of the iron-nitrogen diagram near the iron end and a lack of recognition of the effect of state of aggregation on physical properties although both have been fairly well worked out.My thanks are due to Mr. J. Motok for furnishing a valuable bibliography and translations of articles by Must and Duhr.The iron-nitrogen diagram in the solid state, so far as it concerns the nitrogen content of commercial iron and steel, consists simply in a solubility curve increasing with temperature. The important thing about this solubility curve is that without cold wore the iron nitride when precipitated does not go into solution on heating for long periods below 300°C. This slowness of solution is probably due to the fact that iron nitride when present as a separate phase has at these temperatures an equilibrium pressure of several thousand atmospheres7 and that therefore each particle of iron nitride surrounds itself with a layer of nitrogen. The precipitation of such an unstable crystal presents points of interest thermodynamically but we can not go into these here. It is quite well established that it precipitate. It can not diffuse then unless this layer is broken through or the temperature and pressure are increased to a point where the nitrogen is absorbed at an appreciable rate in the surrounding iron. This rate will depend on the degree of unsaturation of the iron and the excess pressure of the nitrogen above equilibrium pressure. The degree of unsaturation is determined by the temperature alone so that the temperature at which the rate of solution of the nitride becomes appreciable will depend on the pressure of nitrogen developed. This, in turn, will depend on the balance between rate of decomposition of the nitride and the rate o: flow of the iron. In annealed iron, this temperature of appreciable solution rate is between 300 and 350°C.8 By cold work, however, the elastic limit of the iron is increased, and conditions for the nitride to go into solution are reached at a much lower temperature, giving rise to the so-called blue brittleness. This brittleness and hardening is due to iron nitride going into solid solution and is not precipitation hardening."

In an earlier series of 15 Reports of Investigations on Smelting in the Lead Blast Furnace, experimental data were given on the operations of a custom smelter, a smelter treating rich lead products, and a smelter treating highly zinciferous charges. Five "reports" were written on each of the three types of operation, which were later compared in a summary written for the Institute. Developments in each of these types of operation in lead smelting since the last of the above reports was written have continued and have followed modifications necessitated by changes in the nature of the products received for smelting. The sintering-blast furnace-smelting plants have improved their sintering operation .and have made "2-pass" sintering a more standard operation; the richer lead feeds are diluted when marginal precious metal ores are not available to prevent fusion of the sinter cakes and to permit air to contact the sulfides. Means have been devised to make it easier to remove metallic lead from the wind boxes, but no attempts have been observed to use the D & L somewhat as an ore hearth to make more metallic lead. Except in those cases where zinc-rich lead blast-furnace slags were to be retreated in a "slag-fuming furnace," the sintering and the blast-furnace operations were so carried out that a relatively "clean," lead-poor, final slag was discarded.

"INTR0DUCTIONThis publication is a third of a series devoted to falls of roof and coal in coal mines of the Western States. It gives the results of examinations of the mines of the Rock Springs coal District of Sweetwater County, Wyo., which represent the principal coal beds therein and approximately 75 percent of total production of the State.A study was made of safety conditions at all the producing mines of the district and suggestions were offered the operators regarding methods and practices which would, in the opinion of the writer, provide additional safeguards to prevent accidents from falls of roof and coal.In presenting the subject, consideration must be given to such features as character of the coal beds, depth of cover. methods of mining, timbering practice, roof testing and supervision, and for comparative purposes to certain statistical matter bearing upon relation of accidents to their causes, tonnage produced, men employed, days worked, and lost days due to accidents during the 3—year period covered by this study.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe writer acknowledges the cooperation of the officials of the various coal companies, without whose assistance this work could not have been completed.F0UR REPRESENTATIVE COAL OPERATIONSThis report relates to four representative coal operations in the Rook Springs district of Sweetwater County, Wyo., which are referred to as mines A, B, C, and D. This paper describes the mineral deposits and discusses mining and milling methods and related operating conditions in an important gold , silver , lead , and zinc producing area in Ouray , San Juan , and San Miguel Counties , Colo . , embracing 250 square miles . The area is extremely rigged , ranging in altitude from 8,000 to 14,000 feet . White men first penetrated the area in 1860 , when a group known as "Baker's party " reached the Animas River at the present site of Silverton . Difficulty with the Ute Indians and severe winter conditions forced the group to leave and discouraged prospecting until 1870 when a second party reached the area and succeeded in producing 27 tons of ore yielding $ 150 a ton in gold . In 1874 , a treaty with the Indians opened the way for settlement , and mining was established . The total production of recovered gold , silver , copper , lead , and zinc from 1873 to 1947 in the three counties is valued at $347,057,047 . The greatest amount of the total production of metals has come from quartz veins in a series of volcanic flows and tuffs covering the area and comprising a blanket 4,000 to 6,000 feet thick . The igneous rocks were laid down upon an old , erosion surface and are underlain by Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks and pre - Cambrian metamorphic rocks . The entire series has been intruded in late Tertiary time by volcanic dikes and larger intrusive masses . Because of the great differences in relief generally , mining is con-" ducted through long adits to a depth of nearly 3,000 feet below surface in places . Walls of the veins generally stand well , and shrinkage stoping is the most common method of mining . As virtually all of the ore is sulfide below the zone of oxidation , flotation is the common method of milling . Generally , where gold is important , provision is made for its removal by jigs . Bulk concentration of the sulfides is practiced at smaller mills , but the larger operations make a selective lead and zinc concentrate or a lead , zinc , and copper . concentrate . ·

"INTRODUCTION In a previous publication4 results were given of numerous experiments made on the in-flammability of gas mixtures consisting of methane, hydro a. carbon monoxide, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. Data were obtained and tables prepared giving the inflammable limits of each of these combustibles when mixed with various proportions of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. By the use of these data and the application of Le Chatelier's law, it was found possible to calculate the limits of inflammability of any gas mixture containing any or all of the above gases.Various mixtures of the five gases given above were prepared and their limits determined experimentally and then calculated. Good agreement was found between the determined and calculated results when complex gases encountered in mine safety work were tested. Of special significance was the accurate calculation of the limits of inflammability of gases from mine fires, gases from mine explosions, detonation products of explosives, blast—furnace gases, automobile exhaust gas, and other gases of a similar character.Using the method given in the above report, Yeaw5 investigated a number of industrial gases including oven, coal, producer, blue, carbureted blue, and dry quencher gases, and found the determined and calculated results to agree remarkably well, thus giving further proof of the value of such a means of determining dangerous conditions when combustible gases are encountered in practice.GASES FROM A POTASH MINEGases were recently encountered in a potash nine in New Mexico, containing the com-bustibles, methane, hydrogen, and ethane. In one special case a mild explosion occurred when these gases were mixed with the right proportions of air and ignited it therefore became necessary to know the inflammability of these mixtures in order that the proper precautions could be taken to prevent explosions."

Amenability studies were conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines on an electrooxidation technique for the extraction of mercury from cinnabar ores, particularly those that are too low in grade to be furnaced or retorted economically. Oxidation was accomplished by electrolysis of the ore while slurried with brine. Mercury was dissolved through the formation of the soluble tetrachloro mercury complex, HgC142-. Mercury extractions ranged from 90 to 98 percent in 4 to 6 hours of processing time when tests were made on eight different types of cinnabar ores containing from 0.7 to 18 pounds mercury per ton ore. Salt concentration was varied from 4 to 10 weight-percent depending on whether Pb02 anodes and iron cathodes were used or whether graphite was used for both electrodes. Power consumption ranged from 17 to 64 kilowatt-hours per ton of ore treated. Ninety-nine percent of the mercury was recovered from pregnant solutions by precipitation on an active metal such as zinc, followed by distillation of the resulting amalgam at 600° C.

This article updates the status of fatalities occurring in both coal and metal/nonmetal mines from January through December of 2001. Based on preliminary accident reports, as of December 31, 2001, seventy-two fatalities have occurred at coal and metal/ nonmetal mining operations. During this period, forty-two fatalities occurred at coal operations and thirty fatalities occurred at metal/nonmetal operations. Ignition or explosion of gas or dust and fall of roof were the most frequent accident classifications in coal and powered haulage fatalities were the most frequent accident classification in metal/nonmetal.

Two facets of surface mining were studied: feasibility of using training simulators to increase productivity of haulage trucks, front-end loaders, and shovels; and improving the efficiency of dragline operations with a computer-aided analysis of dragline usage and the addition of an on-board operator display. Training costs per student were estimated based on current training practices. Training objectives were derived from task: analyses of haulage trucks, front-end loaders, and shovels. The cost effectiveness of training simulators was determined. A computer-aided analysis defined the critical performance parameters. An on-board operator's display is recommended to improve operator efficiency.

"Refiners are generally considered solely as fuel producers, but actually they also comprise a group one of the largest consumers of fuel. For example, during the year 1929 the refineries-burned 51,544,000 barrels of oil as fuel, or the equivalent of over 5 per cent of the crude oil processed in that year. In addition enough other fuels - coal, natural gas, refinery or still gas, and petroleum coke - were utilized to raise the total fuel consumption based on B. t. u. equivalent to more than 10 per cent of the heat value in the total crude oil run to stills. Refineries utilize fuel chiefly as the heat-forming element distillation, but also under-boilers in the formation of steam used in refining, for the heating of buildings, and in the generation of electricity.In the early days of refining, the problem of fuel utilization and fuel economy was of scant importance to the refiners. Margins of profit were comparatively high and the major portion of the operatros1 attention was directed toward increasing their throughput. However, the keen competition that has prevailed in the refining industry over the past five years or more has taught the refiners that their expenses, one of the largest items of which is the cost of fuel, must be curtailed. Thus in 1925 the refiners used an average of 829,000 B. t. u. to refine a barrel of crude oil, wheras by 1929 this average had been reduced to 639,000 B. t. u., a decline of 23 per cent (see fig. 1)Since 1925 oil has ranked first as a refinery fuel (see fig. 2). The use of natural gas increased during 1926 and 1927 but declined in 1928 and 1929. On the other hand, the use of refinery gas has grown rapidly in importance. Coal has shown a steady decline in use at refineries since 1925. Petroleum coke has never supplied more than a very small fraction of the total fuel requirements, although there has been a steady increase in its use."

Sulfur concretes have been developed by the Bureau of Mines as construction materials with physical and mechanical properties that suit them for use in acid and salt corrosive environments where conventional concretes fail. Mixture design methods were established for preparing sulfur concretes using different types of aggregates and recently developed mixed-modified sulfur cements Bench-scale testing of the sulfur concretes has shown their potential value. Corrosion resistance, strength, and durability of sulfur concrete are superior to those of conventional materials. Field in situ evaluation tests of the sulfur concretes as replacement for conventional concrete materials are in progress in corrosive areas of 24 commercial chemical, fertilizer, and metallurgical plants.

The point estimation method can be applied to the safety factor (SF) equation for any specified rock slope failure mode (such as plane shear, step path, or wedge) to obtain reliable estimates of the mean and standard deviation of the SF probability distribution. A gamma probability density function is recommended for modeling this probability distribution, because it allows only for positive values and is flexible enough to provide symmetrical shapes and right-skewed, exponential-type shapes for the SF distribution. The mean and standard deviation define this distribution, which then can be integrated numerically from 0 to 1 to obtain the probability of sliding, PS (portion of the SF distribution where SF < 1.0). The overall probability of failure, PF, for the potential slope failure mass is the joint probability that the rock discontinuities are long enough to allow kinematic failure (PL) and that sliding occurs along the rock discontinuities (PS); that is, PF = PSPL. This method for estimating the probability of sliding is extremely efficient computationally, and thus, expedites slope stability simulation routines used by NIOSH software to stochastically describe rock slope behavior and assist the engineer in designing catch benches for large rock slopes. Enhanced bench design translates into increased operational efficiency and safer working conditions in open pit mines and quarries.

"Electricity as a means of transmitting power was introduced in coal mines of the United States about 1891 for both haulage and coal cutting, only a few years after electrical haulage was first installed on street cars. At first, the hazards of electrical ignition ere not appreciated and the general use of open lights and black blasting powder made the possibility of electrical ignition of fire damp seem small by comparison.5 The possibility of igniting coal dust directly by electric sparks or arcs had not been considered.In the nine years prior to 1900, the progress of introducing electricity underground was slow, except that it was used for lighting shaft bottoms. Electricity had to contend with the more general use of compressed air for coal-cutting machines and, in mainline haulage, with the use of mule-teams and endless and tail-rope systems. During this period, great improvements were made in electrical apparatus, in surface installations as well as in mines. By 1900, therefore, the technique of applying electricity in mines had so far developed that it rapidly drove out the use of compressed air in coal mines because of the comparative ease of its installation and the marked economic advantages of its use over that of compressed air in practically all kinds of mining machines except percussion. rock drills.At this time, however, little thought was given to the hazard of indiscriminate use of electricity causing explosions and fires, and the possibility of electricity causing direct ignition of coal dust had not been considered. On December6, 1907, however, the Monongah, West Va. mine explosion occurred. This was the greatest mine disaster this country has over had, 361 men being killed. Although: there was much diversity of opinion, as to the origin of the explosion, many well-informed engineers concluded that the cause was ignition of coal dust do to wreckage of a runaway trip in a rope haulage entrance slope. This slope also served as a ventilating and it extended from the level of the coal bed to the surface. The runaway trip tore down electric cables and stirred up a cloud of dust when it was wrecked at the bottom of the slope. The dust was probably ignited by the electric arcing that occurred when the wires were knocked down. (Another but less probable source of ignition was the open flames of miners lamps.) From the foot of the slops the explosion appeared to have travelled into the mine, spreading as it went. If this ignition of coal dust was the origin of the explosion, it occurred on pure intake air entering directly from the surface."

The only economically significant mineral exploited in Banglades - during 1981 was natural gas. Nitrogenous fertilizer production was important to the agricultural sector and was totally dependent on the natural gas for fuel and raw material. Domestic cement plants were also fu pled by natural gas. The flat river-delta terrain for most of Bangladesh makes the potential for discovering major mineral deposits poor. No large deposits of metal ores have been found and only in the small hilly southeastern section of the country is there even much chance of finding any. Heavy mineral sand deposits may eventually be exploited along the Chittagong coastline. There is a good potential for crude oil discoveries. The Bangladesh economy has been heavi¬ly subsidized by billions of dollars of foreign aid since the country&apos;s inception. A World Bank report recommended total aid needs of over $2.6 billion in fiscal year (FY) 1980-81. It received commitments for barely over one-half that amount.

"Ventilation is one of the meet important factors in mining, although until recent years less thought has probably been given to effective ventilation than to any other one phase of mining. In the past, very little, if any, attention was given air courses until they became so constricted by falls that the volume of air was greatly reduced; and, in addition, the stoppings and doors were so poorly constructed that only a very small percentage of air reached the face workings.As a matter of fact, mines have been visited where the volume of air being circulated in certain sections was much larger than in others, and where the management was striving to increase the flow of air in those sections with the least air current, believing the ventilation to be deficient. After sampling and analyzing the return air from the various sections in such mines it has been found that the quality of the air in certain places with the largest flow was more impure than in some of those with the least flow.In past years, practically all mine fans were operated by steam-driven engines supplied with steam from the mire boiler plant. No check was made on the steam consumption or the power cost of operating the fan, therefore the management had very little if any definite information as to cost of ventilating the mine.With the increased use of electrically-driven equipment in mines electricity is being used more and more to drive mine ventilating fans, and since in many instances the current is purchased from central power plants operators have come to realize that in many cases the cost of operating the fans is very high. Some engineers estimate that it ranges from 20 to 50 per cent of the total power cost of the mine. This information, together with the fact that mines are now being developed on a larger scale, requiring larger quantities of air for the men to dilute the gases liberated, has caused the large progressive companies to make, a more comprehensive study of mine ventilation, resulting in a decided improvement in the quality and quantity of air at the face workings, as well as reducing materially the ventilating costs."

Point load testing is used to determine rock strength indexes in geotechnical practice. The point load test apparatus and procedure enables economical testing of core or lump rock samples in either a field or laboratory setting. In order to estimate uniaxial compressive strength, index-to-strength conversion factors are used. These factors have been proposed by various researchers and are dependent upon rock type. This study involved the extensive load frame and point load testing of coal measure rocks in six states. More than 10,000individual test results, from 908 distinct rock units, were used in the study. Rock lithologies were classified into general categories and conversion factors were determined for each category. This allows for intact rock strength data to be made available through point load testing for numerical geotechnical analysis and empirical rock mass classification systems such as the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR).
