Track in underground bituminous coal mines was investigated, and technology was taken from other industries in order to obtain information on conditions that impair the safety and efficiency of the track and to develop guidelines and useful information on the construction, inspection and maintenance of mine track. Volume 1 contains information on the investigations, observed track conditions, useful technology from railroads and other industries, derivations of track condition descriptors and recommended limits, conclusions, and recommendations. Volume 2, Guidelines, contains recommended standards and practices for mine track. It includes the relation of track conditions to safe speeds; descriptions and limits for measurable track features such as gage; descriptions of conditions for track components that are normally not measurable, such as subbase soils; construction requirements and techniques, inspection requirements and methods; and methods for managing and performing track maintenance work. As a research product, it does not repeat the summary or derivations. Volume 3, Inspection Handbook, summarizes recommended standards and procedures from Volume 2 and provides related information for' ready reference by inspectors in the mines. As a research product to be used in mines, it does not repeat the summary, derivations or references.

A working understanding of present coal mine communications equipment and its usage is an essential prerequisite to the determination of future communications systems needs. As a means of gaining this understanding, a field survey program was planned and implemented. The plan formulated called for obtaining both qualitative and quantitative data from three main areas of interest: the types, physical condition, and performance characteristics of equipment presently used in the sample of mines to be visited; the relationship present communications has to safety and productivity; and the practical, future communications needs as derived through interviews with present mine management. In compliance with the original plan, the type and physical condition of equipment in use was found through at-mine interviews of personnel responsible for installation and maintenance. Further evaluation was made through the review of equipment instruction books and maintenance manuals and through in-mine inspection of communications equipment and signal distribution networks. The performance characteristics were determined through listening to conversations and noise levels and by talk-testing from randomly selected stations throughout each mine. System operation was evaluated by asking communication system users their opinions and by noting any difficulties personnel had using the systems.

This research was conducted as part of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines program to recover metals, glass, and a combustible fraction from municipal solid waste (MSW). The objective of this analytical study was to determine the concentration of antimony, arsenic, and mercury in samples taken from various sampling areas in the Bureau of Mines raw refuse recycling plant and to compare these values with those for coals used in the generation of electricity. To provide the necessary analytical data, sensitive reproducible ashing-chemical digestion-atomic absorption procedures were adapted from published procedures. It was determined that antimony and mercury concentrations in the combustible fraction of MSW are approximately an order of magnitude higher than those found in coals presently used for power generation;' the arsenic concentration is similar in both fuels.

Procedures in which manganese compounds are reduced and the metal is volatilized and selectively condensed, a hitherto neglected area, were investigated. More than 95 percent of the manganese was recovered from high-melting-point ores whether vacuum volatilization or atmospheric pressure volatilization was used, but neither process is economically attractive under present price-cost conditions.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the development of a protective operator compartment for a new generation thin-seam mobile bridge carrier. The developed compartment is commercially available and is currently employed on approximately 15 bridge carriers used in the mining industry. The design of the compartment, which employed human factors engineering and small- and full-scale mockup models, is fully described. Details of the compartment's fabrication, evaluation, and demonstration in a commercial low-seam coal mine are also provided.

This report analyzes the successful low-pressure gas drive in the Keener sand of the Bonds Creek oilfield, Pleasants and Ritchie Counties, W. Va.) and predicts its future performance. Core analysis from two wells and electrical and radioactivity logs were used to evaluate the reservoir characteristics. Production records over a 37-year period indicate that over 240,000 barrels of oil have been produced from the Keener sand by low-pressure gas injection. Decline-curve analysis shows that 165,000 additional barrels should be recovered from 108 acres of productive sand by continuing this secondary-recovery method.

THE INUNDATION of anthracite reserves in the Eastern Middle field of Pennsylvania affects the life of the anthracite industry in this field; it also influences the economic status of people, communities, and industries that depend wholly or in part upon anthracite for their livelihood. The trends of production and of employment in the anthracite-mining industry in this field are downward, and they probably will continue in this direction. The reserves have been depleted to the extent that the end of the active life of the industry as a. major economic factor is approaching. By removing the water in those pools where it can be done economically, the future of this industry may be extended somewhat.

Through the use of statistical methods, estimates of metal content and tonnage of an ore body made by using data from 18 diamond-drill holes are compared with actual values established with data from 1,829 drift samples. The reliability of the estimates made from the drill holes is assessed in several ways. The relationship of metal content (assay-width product) to grade is explained. It is concluded that useful estimates can be made from 18 drill holes provided that reasonable assumptions are made and certain risks accepted. The ore body investigated is the Don Tomas vein of the Frisco mine, San Francisco del Oro, Chihuahua, Mexico.

A study of factors related to subsidence was specified in a project proposal entitled "Structural Analysis of Block-Caving Operation, San Manuel Copper Mine, Pinal County, Ariz.," approved by the Bureau of Mines early in 1953. This proposal was designed by Charles H. Johnson, then chief of the Base Metals Branch of the Minerals Division, Washington, D. C., assisted by Dr. Leonard Obert, chief of the Applied Physics Branch, Region VIII (now Region V), College Park, Md., and E. D. Gardner, chief mining engineer, Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C. It read as follows: This project is a study of the mechanics of undercut block caving in a deep ore deposit. The San Manuel is a low-grade disseminated copper deposit containing nearly a half billion tons of ore lying at depths of 500 to 2,000 feet. Development is just starting. Production is to begin in 3 to 4 years (in 1956) at a rate of 30,000 tons of ore a day, or 60,000 tons of copper a year. A Government loan of $90,000,000 /subsequently increased to $94,000,000/ and a long-term Government purchase contract support the capital investment, which will total about $110,000,000.

The Department of Interior, U.S. Bureau of Mines performs the task of estimating the quantity of coal reserves existing in each state on a county by county basis. As a part of Information Circular 8655, the Bureau of Mines established the criteria for the uniform estimations of coal reserves and listed the most recent estimates of coal reserves by county and by seam. At the same time however, the Bureau recognized that these figures represented the upper bound with regard to the estimated actually usable or obtainable reserves. Recovery of these reserves are subject to the mining methods used and to the resolution of such problems as the use of poor quality coal and competition provided by conflicting land use. These problems, in practice restrict the recovery of the estimated quantities of coal reserves listed in IC 8655. Another impact, the subject of this manual, is the impact resulting from previous mining activities. In particular, many of the reserve seams included in the reserve estimates overlie or underlie mined-out coal beds. Portions of these reserve seams may therefore be unmineable or at best may have a reduced quantity of extractable coal. In order to improve the accuracy of the coal reserve base estimates, the Bureau of Mines funded an effort1 to develop a systematic methodology for estimating the coal loss associated with the impact of previous mining activity. The coal loss calculation model (CLCM) described in this manual is a result of that effort and addresses the percentage of coal loss in reserve seams due to previous overmining or undermining.

This report is submitted in accordance with the provisions of the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of April 5, 1944 (30 U.S.C. 321-325, as amended), which require that: "The Secretary of the Interior shall render to Congress on or before the first day of January of each year a report on all operations under this Act." Owing to the broad scope of the content and the diversity of interests represented, the Annual Report for 1953 has been divided into two separate publications. Each has been published by the Bureau of Mines as a Report of Investigations, and the respective titles follow: R. I. 5043, Part I - Oil From Coal. R. I. 5044, Part II - Oil From Oil Shale. Identical in each report, the introduction summarizes research progress made in 1953 under the entire Synthetic Liquid Fuels program. A process for recovering manganese from open-hearth steel-plant slags was investigated. The proposed method of accomplishing this is indicated by the flow diagram in figure 1. Mixtures of open-hearth, steel-plant flush slags and limestone, so proportioned as to have molar [CaO -3P205] ratios of approximately 2, were fired at approximately 2,400° F. in an oxidizing atmosphere and then cooled slowly. This treatment produced a clinker consisting principally of two solid phases comprised of (1) various combinations of the oxides of manganese, iron, aluminum, and magnesium, probably in spinel complexes, and (2) a dicalcium silicate phase, which contains the phosphorus. Reduction of these clinkers with hydrogen or with gaseous mixtures containing CO, CH4, and other hydrocarbons at about 1,300° F. formed manganous oxide as well as varying amounts of ferrous oxide and iron. Carbon monoxide and mixtures of hydrogen and carbon monoxide effectively reduced the clinkers but also gave higher proportions of soluble iron when the manganese was extracted from the reduced clinkers by leaching at about 80° F. with ammonium carbonate solutions containing 26 to 28 percent ammonia and 15 to 26 percent carbon dioxide. It is believed that the manganese is in solution as an ammonia-manganese complex. Concentrations of about 90 grams of manganese per liter were obtained by batch countercurrent procedures. By distilling 50 percent of the ammonia, the ammonia-manganese complex was decomposed, and approximately 90 percent of the manganese was precipitated as the carbonate with the simultaneous precipitation of 15 to 30 percent of the iron, the larger amounts of iron precipitating in the continuous tests. The manganese-iron ratio in the product could be increased either by recycling more manganese from the distillation to the extraction or by aerating the liquor to purge it of iron before, rather than after, the distillation step. Calcination of the pelletized manganese carbonate in an oxidizing stmosphere at 2,000° F. or above gave a final product, Mn304, resistant to crushing and apparently possessing the other physical properties essential in a ferromanganese blast-furnace feed.

Originally developed for use in coal mines where on-shift blasting with explosives was prohibited, compressed-air blasting has been used for the past 15 years as a substitute for fixed explosives. With the current commercially available compressed-air systems -Airdox and Armstrong -coal is dislodged by a high-pressure discharge of air from a pressurized shell placed in the coal borehole. In the original systems stationary compressors were mounted on the surface or in the underground ventilated areas. These proved so successful that a mobile compressor unit was developed for use at the working face. Because of the possibility that such a unit might operate in a gassy atmosphere, the Bureau of Mines has investigated the hazards associated with operation under conditions where firedamp could accumulate in explosive concentrations. The Federal Bureau of Mines made pilot plant investigations of the process requirements necessary to produce heavy fuel oil by the liquid-phase hydrogenation of bituminous coal. The investigation was carried out in three separate series of experiments. The first series studied the effect of temperature and contact time on product distribution at 3,500 p.s.i.g. and 420° to 480° C. in the presence of 0.1 wt.-pct../ stannous sulfide plus 0.05 wt.-pct. iodoform based on gross coal. As a result of increased contact times and temperatures, the conversion-6/ and yield of hydrocarbon gas increased, the viscosity of product oil decreased, and elimination of oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur from coal increased. The yield of oil did not indicate any definite trend with changes in temperature and contact time. The yield of oil ranged from 76 to 85 pct. for Pittsburgh coal and from 60 to 85 pct. for Rock Springs coal. Asphaltenes in the product oil ranged from 17 to 38 pct. of the total oil for Pittsburgh coal and from 12 to 22 pct. for Rock Springs coal. Fuel oils meeting Bunker C or American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) Grade 6 specifications were produced with Rock Springs coal at 0.2- to 1.0-hr. contact time and 440° to 480° C. and with Pittsburgh coal at 0.3- to 1.0-hr. contact time and 420° to 460° C. In the second series of experiments tin, nickel, iron, and zinc were evaluated as catalysts for the hydrogenation of Rock Springs coal to heavy fuel oil at 3,500 p.s.i.g. and 460° C. Using the apparent conversion of coal as criterion of catalyst activity, at a contact time of 0.45 hr. tin was the most effective catalyst; nickel and iron were nearly as effective, but the use of zinc resulted in much lower conversion. When the contact time was increased to 0.80 hr., the apparent conversion of coal was essentially the same for each of the catalysts. When the yield of oil boiling below 3550 C. was used as criterion of catalyst activity, at 0.45 hr. the order of activity was tin, iron, nickel, and zinc; at 0.80 hr. tin was far superior and the others were essentially equal. The product oils contained from 8 to 20 pct. asphaltenes.

A commercial, battery-powered mine vehicle has been equipped for remote operation in coal mines. This vehicle is controlled by an operator from the remote station. Command signals originating at the remote station as well as video and data signals originating on board the vehicle are relayed between the remote station and vehicle using a single coaxial line. This coaxial line is normally 2,000 feet in length and is reeled in and out from a drum mounted aboard the vehicle The vehicle has a maximum speed of 6 ft/sec and a minimum speed of 4 ft/sec using 36-volt excitation of the traction motor. If this traction motor is excited by two of the three batteries, 24-volt excitation, the vehicle will travel at approximately 2 ft/sec. The speed can be reduced by the operator to 1 ft/sec. This vehicular system has been tested in coal mines. Presently, the major limitation of this system is associated with fatigue failure of the splices in the coaxial line and lack of mobility caused by its 3-wheel design.

This report covers operations at the Crystal-Victory and Minerva No. 1 mines in Hardin County, Ill., which are operated by the Minerva Oil Co., Fluorspar Division, with offices in Eldorado. It describes the exploration, development, and mining practices, giving costs of each. Transportation, equipment, power, labor, and other influencing factors also are discussed. The mining methods employed are those most applicable to the flat-bedded replacement deposits common to the Cave-in-Rock section of the Southern Illinois fluorspar district. The fluorspar beds occur from surface exposures to 1,000 feet deep. In this district churn drilling is the method practiced for exploring flat-bedded deposits from the surface. Aerial photography and geochemical methods for indicating mineralization have been helpful in planning a drilling program. A program usually includes enough drilling to obtain only sufficient data on the value of the ore body and its structure to justify initial development and purchase of the mineral rights under option.

"The increasing realization of the fire hazards involved in the use of wooden shingles caused the National Lumber Manufacturers' Association to beginsome five years ago a search for a suitable fire-resistant paint. The problem was submitted to the Educational Bureau of the Paint Manufacturers' Association of the United States and work was started by Mr. Henry L. Gardner at the Institute of Industrial Research, Washington D.C. in collaboration with Dr. Herman von Schrenk, a timber expert of St. Louis.The results of this,work have been described by Heckel, in ""Asbestos"", (Heckel G.B., Asbestos in the Paint Industry, Asbestos, Vol. 2, July, 1920,pp.- 5-10).,,who gives the following formula for one of the colors as typical: It will be noted from this formula that ""asbestine"" forms 33% of the total liquid pigment by weight or 31.8% of the solid constituents. Hockel in the article referred to describes this paint,as ""asbestiform"" and assumes since ""asbestine"" is magnesium silicate it must be the chrysetile variety of ""Asbestine"", however, is not asbestos but is a trade name for a fibrous variety of talc mined in the Gouverneur district, St. Lawrence County, New York. This rather natural error persists through the article and credits asbestos with many desirable properties which are characteristics of talc."

In this report, the application of the Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (OPMHS) to a mine located in Ohio using a large stripping dragline, and truck and front-end loader (FEL) is described. The specific objective of the study is to demonstrate the application of the simulator to mine planning and coal production. On the basis of the simulations, it was concluded that the production from the haulback operation should be increased to accommodate improvements in both the stripping dragline's availability and mean cycle time. Several alternatives were studied for the best use of equipment if the present operating parameters could not be improved upon. No economic analysis of these proposals were made.

This report is Volume II of a three volume final report dealing with the microseismic monitoring of a longwall coal mine. The research presented in Volume II is concerned with the evaluation of field techniques for obtaining seismic velocity data required for computing microseismic source locations. The report describes the evaluation of a number of different field techniques and the seismic velocity data obtained at the Greenwich mine site where the micro-seismic studies, described in Volume I of the final report, were carried out. Three different methods were employed to evaluate seismic velocities, namely; surface refraction, down-hole, and transmission. In all cases the seismic sources were either located on surface (mechanical impact) or near-surface (explosive charges). It was found that a mechanical energy source could be conveniently utilized to determine shallow velocities and make bedrock-regolith interface depth determinations. For deeper velocity determinations suitable explosive charge sources Here required. In general, refraction data did not always plot in a linear manner and some subjective interpretation was necessary. The down-hole method was found to be useful for incremental vertical velocity evaluation, however, the transmission method provided the most consistent average vertical velocity data. At the Greenwich site seismic velocities were found to be anisotropic with values ranging from 9,551 to 10,739 feet per second depending on direction.

The objective of this contract was to provide thrust and torque control and visual output torque readout systems to an existing mine roof bolting machine and to test the consistency of torques obtained under actual field conditions. A Lee Norse TD1 roof bolter was modified by adding a simple torque sensing device to the drill rotation mechanism and a pneumatic logic control circuit that measures torque and controls the hydraulic circuit to the rotation motor. The modification controls and indicates the final installation torque of mine roof bolts. A total of over 5,000 mechanical roof bolts were installed in an operating coal mine. The installed torque of these bolts were within an error band (standard deviation) of 8%.
