The old fatalistic idea that industrial accidents were a necessary part of industry and that little, if anything, could be done about them has been succeeded by realization that a majority of the hazards causing these accidents were man-made and that if they could be recognized most of them could be eliminated and the accidents prevented. Recognition of these facts has brought about substantial reduction of accidents in many coal dines, as well as in other industries. Knowledge of the hazards and their elimination has been obtained largely through a study of individual accidents and the causes which led up to them. With this thought in mind tae available data on coal-mine explosions in Illinois were studied.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, with the cooperation of the University of Alabama and coal producers, has made a series of washability studies to obtain technically and commercially important data regarding the productive coal beds of the State. Based on the system followed in these studies, this report consists principally of screen-sizing and float-and-sink data on the Clark and Gholson beds at Boothton, Ala. A previous washability study 4/ has been made on the Clark bed at Marvel, Ala.SAMPLING AT MINESThe coal from the Gholson and the Clark beds was sampled at the tipple which receives the output,the Boothten No. 3 and No. 4 mines. These two mines are on the Gholson and Clark beds, respectively, but the coal. from both mines is mixed on the tipple and washed in the same washery. The samples taken were minus 4-inch raw coal. The plus 4-inch raw coal is hand¬picked and not washed. AS the 4-inch screen had a capacity in excess of the output of the mines, it was stopped at the end of each mine-car trip. By Observing from which mine incline each trip was hoisted, a separate sample from each bed was cut from the discharge stream of an endless belt which conveys the through 4-inch raw coal to the bin ahead of the washer. The output from each bed was sampled uniformly over the period of a working shift. The two washability samples weighed approximately 3,000 pounds each."

This paper, describing the various mining methods and practices at Britannia mines, Britannia Beach, British Columbia, is one of a series covering mining practices, methods, and costs in the mining districts of the United States and Canada. The Britannia property has been operated continuously for 30 years, and in that time many diverse methods have been used in exploiting the various types of orebodies worked. Under normal conditions mining methods include surface gloryholes, shrinkage stoping, shrinkage with powder drifts for primary breaking, horizontal cut-and-fill, horizontal and inclined square-setting, and timbered and open rills, the three latter systems being combined with close filling. The Britannia method of mining, a large-scale retreating shrinkage system usually combined with powder drifts for primary breaking, has been developed and applied here very successfully. Each block of ground as developed is studied as a separate problem, and the mining method, or combination of methods best adapted to the work in hand is applied thereto. Operating at, capacity, the series of mines produces 7,000 tons of ore per day.

[On December 2, 1932, the Governor of California called upon the representatives of the mining industry of the State to attend a meeting at Sacramento to discuss ways and means of assisting is relieving some of its perplexing and extremely distressing problems, particularly the mounting cost of accidents which faces the industry with an industrial insurance rate for classification of $11.85 per $100 of pay roll, effective January 1, 1033. The significance of this fact is at once apparent when it is realized that the classification rates per $100 of pay roll for mining have steadily increased for some time, as follows: $3.91 in 1924, $5.54 in 1925 and 1926, $8.04 in 1927, $8.53 in 1928, $9.05 in 1929, $9.42 in 1930, $10.54 in 1931, $10.99 in 1952, and $11.85 in 1133. In other words, the cost rates have acre than doubled, wile statistics indicate that the accident rates nave shown an entirely different trend. At the meeting mentioned, one of the management officials sounded an effective keynote when he declared that a spade should be called: a spade. The perplexing problems of any industry can be approached best and remedies applied if that policy is kept to the front. It is appropriate to mention that high accident rates and a decrease in wages in recent years have unquestionably accounted in part for a unit cost rate, on a pay-roll basis; it also is well to explain that the policy years3 1926 to 1930, inclusive, are the years on which the accident-cost experience for 193: is based. "INTRODUCTION The use of wet drilling with adequate ventilation has largely controlled production of dust in drilling rock; however, in some operations, such as shaft sinking and modern tunnel driving, when each of a number of drills is operating in a small cross-sectional area, it is at times difficult to ventilate well enough to keep the dust concentration within desired limits.Some chemical compounds, known as wetting agents, when added to water in small quantities reduce the interfacial tension and make it possible for the solution to wet dust particles more effectively than water alone.This report presents results of tests on the effectiveness of two wetting solutions in reducing the amount of dust produced by wet drilling in basalt.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe tests were conducted the Bureau's Mount 'Weather Testing Adit,Mount Weather, The author acknowledges the assistance and cooperation of Wing G. To remove hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in automotive exhaust by oxidation , a catalyst of 4.2 percent Uз Og , 1.7 percent Cr₂ 0 , and 1.7 percent CuO supported on 1 /8 - inch y- alumina spheres was tested in a reactor in place of the muffler of a 1 / 2 - ton truck . Tests were made with both nonleaded and leaded gasolines . With the engine at operating temperature , tests were made with the engine idling and with the vehicle cruising at 30 mph . Auxiliary air was added to maintain an oxygen concentration of 3 to 4 percent in the gas leaving the catalytic reactor . The vehicle was operated for 83 hours (about 60 percent of the time with the engine idling ) and 525 miles with nonleaded gasoline . Conversions of 98 percent of the hydrocarbons and 100 percent of the carbon monoxide were achieved with the engine idling and with 7,000 ppm carbon atoms and 4- percent carbon monoxide in the feed to the reactor . Hydrocarbon conversions of 75 percent were obtained at cruising speeds of 30 mph with a feed of 1,700 ppm carbon atoms ; the carbon monoxide concentration was less than 0.3 percent in the feed and was unchanged in passage through the reactor . Identical activity was obtained initially in switching to a gasoline containing 1.9 ml tetraethyl lead (TEL) per gallon . However, there was a gradual loss in activity thereafter . Conversions in tests with the engine idling about 50 percent of the time , had decreased by 23 percent for the hydrocarbons and by 25 percent for the carbon monoxide from their initial values after 122 hours and 1,300 miles of operation with leaded gasoline . The levels of radioactive materials in the exhaust of the reactor and the radiation in the vehicle were negligible .

The development of a completely water - free expendable graphite mold material , useful for reactive metal castings , has been detailed . Mixing and curing variables have been evaluated both by physical testing of the material itself and by castings of titanium , zirconium , and hafnium . The blend of powdered graphite , cornstarch , dextrin , cereal binder , linseed oil , and Carbowax -4000 is a successful mix when mulled in a carbon dioxide atmosphere , and properly cured and fired . The primary advantage of this material is its adaptability to standard foundry techniques ; i . e . , core blowing and hand ramming . Temperatures in the curing and firing cycles do not exceed 960 ° C , and no vacuum firing is required .

This report covers the preliminary phase of an investigation of some clays and shales and other materials in North and South Dakota to determine the feasibility of lightweight -aggregate manufacture in the two States. The background of the light - weight -aggregate industry, on a national basis, and results of preliminary laboratory testing of samples of North and South Dakota clays and shales from various localities are presented herein. The countrywide search for lightweight aggregates was necessitated toward the end of the 19th century by the change in building design from thick, heavy, load- bearing walls to a framework of structural steel .beams and columns with thin walls, followed shortly by the use of reinforced concrete and structural concrete as materials for the load-supporting frame. Ordinary concrete, with sand and gravel aggregate, weighs about 150 pounds to the cubic foot. A lighter concrete was needed to relieve the dead load and make it possible to construct higher buildings or add stories to existing buildings.

"The significant facts in the problem of the relation between the production of crude petroleum, and the ever-increasing demand for petroleum products are that in spite of continually increasing production, improvements in methods of refining and utilization, and heavy increases in imports, demands grow still more rapidly and we seem always faced with a shortage at hand or lust ahead. On the other hand, our foremost authorities warn um of entirely inadequate domestic reserves. Looking abroad we find some large fields and many of speculative promise, 'tut the situation is complicated by international relations and demands by other countries which promise to be even more insistent than oars. This is the situation, then. We can not rely upon our own Crude Petroleum to meet the Ever Increasing Demand for Petroleum Products.I wish to follow this somewhat alarming statement by saying at once that the Bureau of Mines is not pessimistic in facing this situation. To my mind those who discuss the oil situation may be placed in three categories; the pessimists, the optimists, and the super-optimists. The pessimists I call those who see darkly and will concede no possibility of solution. According to them a few years will see the automobiles piled in windrows of 'dilapidated junk, I have no sympathy with this point of view and deem it vicious and entirely unwarranted.The optimists I term those who believe that there is a solution and that we shall be able to meet all of our reasonable requirements for as far into the future as can be foreseen, yet who recognizes that this desired end can not be attained without prevision and energetic effort.The super-optimists are those who will say to you, ""There is nothing to this talk of shortage, whenever we have needed oil we have always found it and always will."" To these gentlemen the possibility of an inadequate supply of oil is as incomprehensible as the possibility of the extinction of the passenger pigeon was to the early settlers who saw flocks that hid the sun for days during their passage. The passenger pigeon disappeared within two generations thereafter, and I deem this point of view as being perhaps more vicious than that of the extreme pessimist. It seems to me it is nothing less than improvidence lulling us into a false sense of security. There is an old proverb to the effect that ""The Lord helps him who helps himself."" I believe that we shall solve the oil problem, but I do not think it will be solved by vague optimism. It is going to call for our most energetic efforts and I believe we shall have to do a lot of ""helping ourselves."""

The surge in gold and silver prices during the 1970's attracted many new mining operators and has rekindled interest among experienced ones. With its low capital investment requirements and fast payout, leaching has attracted many operators--particularly those with small or low- grade deposits. Although in certain situations leaching offers many advantages over conventional mining methods, many operators are uncertain how these relatively new techniques should be implemented. Consequently the Bureau of Mines has prepared this circular to disseminate information on gold and silver leaching practices, techniques, and problem. Engineering data gathered from 26 operations indicate that most ores are leached in heaps following crushing and distribution on pads. Metal values are recovered from cyanide leach solutions using either zinc precipitation or charcoal adsorption. Potential problems that my hamper on block development of a leaching operation are poor percolation characteristics of the ore, calcium salt buildup, low temperatures, and solution losses. An extensive bibliography on gold and silver leaching is appended.

Field-scale experiments were conducted at Gorgas, Ala., from 1951 to 1954. Three reaction paths were formed by electrolinking-carbonization, using electrode spacings of 150, 152, and 155 feet. The coal along these reaction paths was gasified, using air, oxygen, and steam separately or in various combinations. At the conclusion of operation, a drilling survey was conducted to determine the location and approximate area of the reaction zones. During the applications of the electrolinking-carbonization technique the maximum limitation on electrode spacing was not determined. Initial tests were conducted at 60-foot spacing. Successful path-preparation tests were made at 150-, 152-, and 155-foot spacings, and the indications were that much longer spacings were possible. The potential requirements appear to be constant, regardless of path length, while the gross power required probably will increase with path length. During the carbonization phase gas was produced that is similar in quality to coke-oven gas produced at low to intermediate temperatures.

It is recognized that the determination of electrical resistivity of the earth within a given area may furnish information concerning the location of certain mineralized strata of economic importance. Present knowledge of the electrical resistivity of the various rock formations is almost nil, and the geophysicist who is detailed to make a survey of an area without any data as to the relative resistivity of the underlying rocks is greatly handicapped. Such surveys are usually made within areas known to contain mineral deposits to aid in locating desirable points for drilling. Usually these areas have been prospected by diamond drilling, and drill cores of the various rocks and ores are usually obtainable. Were it possible to make resistivity tests in a laboratory of the drill cores or from pieces of the rocks and ore within an area before attempting a field survey, this would indicate not only the advisability for such a survey but would aid considerably in the interpretation of the results of such a survey. To be of most value a definite method should be used for all such tests, and as yet such a method has not been established.

Nineteen eighty-seven was a year of significant change in the Bureau of Mines-change to help it better adapt and respond to the wide range of new challenges facing the U.S. mineral industry. The Bureau has been regarded as the world's premier mineral information and research agency. Its authoritative, comprehensive data and its pioneering research have contributed significantly to the minerals position of the United States. Yet no organization in today's complex, dynamic world, with its rapidly advancing technologies, can afford to rest on its laurels. Mission and program must be constantly fresh and relevant to the day's issues and problems. Moreover, rather than reacting to events, the organization must strive to anticipate and prepare for them. It must have a sense-a vision, if you will-for the future.

Manufacture of lime is one of the oldest industries. Plants are distributed widely and furnish an essential raw material for numerous commodities. Use of lime in hundreds of manufacturing and chemical processes, by the building trades, and in agriculture has created a demand for large production and has necessitated exhaustive research on methods of manufacture and uses. The bibliography of publications on lime is extensive; but, for the most part, each publication has dealt with individual operations. The purpose of this paper is to present a general picture of the industry as a whole. The abundant literature has been abstracted and quoted freely, and the National Lime Association has furnished valuable data for certain sections. Publications containing more-detailed information on the various branches of the industry are referred to in the footnotes and bibliography.

As part of its research program to investigate ways of improving resource recovery and reducing subsidence, researchers from the U.S. Bureau of Mines placed instruments in the B-North ore body of the Cannon Mine, Wenatchee, WA, to monitor cemented backfill and rock deformation during mining. The vibrating-wire gauges proved to be reliable and versatile, and approximately half of the instruments are providing data after 2 years of use. A two-dimensional, finite-element model was used to analyze the Cannon Mine's multilevel bench cut-and-fill mining method and predict rock and backfill displacements. The model accurately predicted rock displacements, but the predicted and measured displacements in cemented backfill had a correlation coefficient near zero, indicating that the model should only be used to predict rock displacements and not backfill displacements. A finite-difference model was also used to evaluate the stability of a cemented backfill pillar. Results can be used to conservatively predict backfill stresses, but on-site observation of pillar failures coupled with in situ measurements are needed to make more accurate predictions. An ongoing evaluation of the mining system has indicated that filling the primary stopes tight to the back with cemented backfill allowed these pillars to carry overburden loads soon after the cemented backfill was placed.

In 1876 cassiterite was identified in the placer gold from the northern Black Hills, and such a mixture could have come only from Nigger Hill or one of the streams draining the hill, because in no other hart of the northern hills have cassiterite anti gold been found together. Nigger Hill is in western Lawrence County, South Dakota, and on it is the little camp of Tinton. The Wyoming line runs along the west side of the hill and crosses the ridge which is the hill's continuation about miles north-northwest of Tinton.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has in progress a study or the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines. A major problem of this study is to compare the deliveries calculated from the gas pipe-line flow formulas commonly used, with the metered deliveries from pipe lines in operation. In order to obtain such comparisons a series of tests has bean made on 25 operating pipe lines in Kansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, and California ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Study of the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines was made under the general supervision of H. The deformation modulus of coal mine pillars theoretically can be reduced by drilling holes in advance of the mining face. This reduction of modulus along the edge of the pillar has the effect of decreasing the stress concentration in the roof; control of roof caving is thereby predicted. Initial field work indicated that a high horizontal stress field existed at the field test site: Subsequent field work was undertaken to confirm the high horizontal stress field and to attempt to relieve the horizontal stress in the immediate roof. A method of softening pillars in conjunction with normal mining activity was developed. Instruments to measure horizontal roof strain, roof parting, roof tilt at the rib, and changes in vertical and horizontal stress in the roof and in the coal were used. These instruments were installed in both softened and unsoftened entries and in locations to indicate the effect of vertical slots in the roof. Significant stress reduction due to pillar softening was indicated, but the effect of this reduction on roof stability was not established. The vertical roof slots relieved the horizontal stress in the immediate roof very effectively, and observations of roof conditions indicated that the slots definitely improved roof stability.
