This paper describing the methods of recovery and treatment of a sand and gravel deposit and the preparation of these materials for a number of special markets is one of a series being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. It is of particular interest to those sand and gravel operators who have a surplus of fine sand which must be sent to waste, both from the point of view of, equipment and the variety. of markets supplied, and in that it describes one of the few sand and gravel plants which have resorted to hydraulic classification for sizing fine sand. To reduce the respirable dust generated by auger-type continuous coal mining machines. The Approach: Use water sprays close to the cutting bits on the auger so that coal fragments are thoroughly wetted as they are formed to prevent dust dispersal into the ventilating air. How It Works: The "wet auger" system of dust control uses water sprays distributed on both shafts of auger type continuous miners. This approach has been tested underground by personnel of the Bureau's Twin Cities (Minn.) Mining Research Center on a Wilcox Mark 20 continuous miner, in a cost sharing contract with Buchanan & Sons Coal Company, Inc. Personnel of the Interior Department's Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration collected dust samples and analyzed the data. A test machine was fitted with six sprays on each auger (see Fig. 1). Water flow rates from 8 to 12 gpm at pressures from 90 to 120 psi, or about 8 gallons per ton of coal mined, were required. During the time period from 1990-2007, 1601 reportable fires occurred in the U.S. mining industry (an average of 89 fires per year). The leading causes of U.S. mine fires were flame cutting and welding operations, frictional heating and ignitions, electrical shorts, mobile equipment malfunctions, and spontaneous combustion. The fact that mine fires continue to occur with an alarming regularity reinforces the importance of recognizing and eliminating the potential hazards and the overall need for improved fire control and suppression technology to ensure the best possible outcome during a mine fire. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting an evolving comprehensive program of research that is addressing mine fire prevention, detection, management and suppression. This paper presents a summary of recent research accomplishments and provides an overview of the next phase of the NIOSH mine fire research program.

"INTRODUCTION When permissible explosives are used in c procedure recommended by the Bureau of Mines 5/ they are relatively safe, and, no mine explosions are known to have resulted from this type of blasting. However, unsafe blasting practices - the use of nonpermissible explosives or the improper use of permissible explosives - have caused many serious disasters. In fact, such unsafe practices constitute the third most important cause (exceeded only by electricity and the use of open lights and smoking) of coal-mine explosions in the United States. During 1929-1947, inclusive, 81 explosions, resulting in 475 fatalities, were ascribed to unsafe blasting. 6/The hazards of black powder, dynamite, and other nonpermissible explosives in coal mines have been recognized for many years, and attention has been called to this in numerous Bureau of Mines publications. Not only can these explosives ignite flammable gas-air mixtures readily, but they can also ignite coal dust, as has been illustrated repeatedly in tests and at educational public demonstrations at Bruceton and elsewhere. 7/Research in the Experimental coal mine 8/ of the Bureau of Mines at Bruceton, Pa., and unfortunate experience in commercial mines have proved beyond doubt that improper use of explosives that have passed the official permissibility tests can cause as explosions. In limited tests with a fey American permissibles at Bruceton, and in more, extensive tests with permitted explosives at the Polish experiment station, 9/ explosive charges were fired from steel cannon and freely suspended in coal-dust clouds. In these experiments coal dust was ignited under some conditions. However, it has never been definitely established whether permissible explosives can initiate coal-dust explosions when fired in a coal seam. It is true that a few mine explosions were strongly suspected to have resulted from ignition of coal dust by misuse of permissibles, but in each case other complicating factors introduced some doubt in the minds of the investigators. Full knowledge of the problem is important, because coal dust is present in most blasting operations in coal."

Within these jurisdictions, primary attention is given to requirements that must be met in each country for acquisition of rights to permit development of mineral resources. Coverage includes: First, identification of the controlling laws or statutes governing minerals acquisition and reference to the administrative authority; second, analysis of the laws governing mines and quarries and their products; third, analysis of laws applicable to natural gas, petroleum, and related materials; and fourth, mention of laws regulating offshore operations. Where pertinent, sections dealing with historical background or administration have been added. In countries where minerals are subject to control of states or provinces, those areas are considered separately from the central government.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) is conducting research to reduce the noise exposures of roof bolting machine operators and to prevent additional cases of Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) thru the development of engineering noise controls. This paper describes and evaluates an engineering noise control for the roof bolting machine, namely the collapsible drill steel enclosure. The results of the evaluation demonstrated that using the collapsible drill steel enclosure provided a 7 dB(A) reduction in sound pressure level at the operator?s position of a roof bolting machine.

This Bureau of Mines report reviews the mineral industry of the Black Hills area, including Butte, Custer, Fall River, Lawrence, Meade, and Penning- ton Counties, S. Dak.; and Crook, Niobrara, and Weston Counties, Wyo. It includes discussion of geological occurrence, processing, and potential of 27 commodities that have been produced from the nine-county area. The value of mineral production exceeds $70 million annually. Gold and petroleum account for two-thirds of the total, followed by clays, cement, sand and gravel, and rock. The combined mineral industries annually consume 268 million kilowatts of electrical energy, 933 million Mcf of gas, and 2 million barrels of fuel oil. Water consumption is about 10,000 gallons per minute. About 2,700 persons are employed on a year-round or significant part-time basis.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health re­searchers conducted a study to investigate the human response issues related to wearing a self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR). The goal was to develop training to educate miners on what they could expect from their units during an escape. Subjects included miners who had experience wearing SCSRs, manu­facturers, and researchers. Results identified nine key areas of concern: (1) starting the unit, (2) unit heat, (3) induction of coughing, (4) unit taste, (5) difficulty in breathing while wearing the unit, (6) quality of the air supplied, (7) nose clips, (8) goggles, and (9) the behavior of the breathing bag. In addition, researchers reviewed the literature on human response under duress. This article describes the expectations training program, which comprises the findings of the SCSR study and what is known about the normal human response in an emergency. The authors present background on SCSRs and the SCSR switchover procedure mandated in the recent federal Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006, which provided the impetus for the expectations training. The purpose of this study is to investigate the application of boring equipment to the production of anthracite coal from steeply pitching beds. Both raise boring and augering equipment were considered. Previous studies (11) have indicated that boring equipment may have definite applications to the development of steeply pitching anthracite beds. This investigation was to carry forward previous work to determine the possible application of the two different types of equipment being considered. Previous conclusions have been substantiated by the results of this study.

Homogeneous zirconium-alloy ingots have been cast on a production basis by the consumable-electrode arc-melting process at the Northwest Electrodevelopment Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, Albany, Oreg. This paper describes the various methods used to introduce alloying materials into the ingot and evaluates 1 each method by the degree of homogeneity of resulting ingots, as determined in tests on sections cut from the ingots. As many as 30 or more ingots, each 6 to 10 inches in diameter and weighing 300 to 500 pounds, were melted, using each method; and, as most of them subsequently were fabricated to strip 0.1 inch thick, the test results are considered to be representative of production practice. Ingot homogeneity has been considered more difficult to achieve in arc-melting practice than by methods where the molten metal is poured into molds and the addition can be stirred into the total mass of metal before casting. Owing to the unique requirements of consumable-electrode arc melting the addition can be made only to that part of the total mass of the ingot that is molten at one time. Observation of the flowlines in 500-pound ingots produced at Albany indicates that the molten pool has a maximum depth about equal to the ingot diameter. The weight of metal molten at one time is, therefore, not over 100 pounds. Characteristically, the arc-melting process is conducive to segregation, which can be overcome, at least partly, by adding the alloy constituents almost continuously during casting.

The heat of formation of vanadium trichloride was determined at 298.15° K. Measurements were made in a solution calorimeter in which an aqueous hydrochloric acid-potassium dichromate solvent was employed. Data are presented for the heats of solution of vanadium trichloride and the vanadium trioxide "backup" compound, and for appropriate dilution reactions needed to preserve stoichiometry. The resulting heat of formation of vanadium trichioride (VCI3) at 298.15° K was found to be ?H°298.15° K = -138.89 ±0.37 kcal/g mole.

The fluorite, deposit discussed herein occurs on a property known as the Snowball and comprises five contiguous mining claims in Maricopa County, Ariz. Attention of the Bureau was first directed to this property early in 1944 through .a request by D. B. Powell, original locator; to investigate his property as a possible source of fluorite and one that might 'Warrant exploration by the Bureau. The property was examined by two Bureau engineers, Thomas C. Denton and Geo. W. Huseman. It was decided to investigate the occurrence further by trenching, sampling, and diamond drilling. Work began on May 15, 194. Preparatory work, trenching and surface sampling, was supervised by Geo. W. Huseman. Drilling was in charge of R. M. Grantham. The project was completed August 8, 1944.

A field study was conducted to evaluate seat designs on shuttle cars. Eight operators participated in evaluating seat designs on the basis of perceived levels of vehicle jarring/jolting and discomfort. Researchers also measured the levels of vehicle jarring/jolting. Four basic seat designs were compared on low and mid-coal seam shuttle cars during production operations at two underground coal mines. Two seats were currently used on the shuttle cars and another two were NIOSH designs. Objective data were collected using accelerometers with pre-amplifiers and filters connected to a data recorder; whereas subjective data were gathered with a visual analog scale (VAS) and a questionnaire. Results from measured levels of jarring/jolting showed that the NIOSH Seat L2A smoothed out bumps better than any other seats. Using the VAS, mid-seam and low-seam shuttle car operators rated the levels of jarring/jolting and discomfort lower with the NIOSH seat than the other seats. Questionnaire responses indicated that operators rated NIOSH seat designs as more comfortable. This research will provide the industry with better seat designs for isolating jarring/jolting in vehicles. Furthermore, researchers plan to improve the NIOSH seats using information gathered in this study.

Samples of raw oil shale and kerogen concentrates were oxidized by alkaline potassium permanganate, air, nitric acid, oxygen, and ozone to obtain information about the chemical structure of organic kerogen in oil shale. In one test, oil shale and oil-shale products were oxidized exhaustively with alkaline potassium permanganate, and the distribution of the organic carbon in the final oxidation products was determined. Comparing results of this oxidation with those obtained from other carbonaceous materials and known compounds gave information about the structure of kerogen. Alkaline potassium permanganate oxidation also was used partly to degrade kerogen into soluble products for characterization purposes. Structures present in these degradation products were indicative of type structures originally present in the kerogen. Nitric acid, oxygen, and ozone were used also for partly degrading kerogen to soluble oxidation products. Carbon-balance oxidation tests using alkaline potassium permanganate showed that Colorado oil-shale kerogen differs from many other carbonaceous materials such as coal and kerogens from other areas. Composition of the degradation products indicated that Colorado oil-shale kerogen is predominantly cycloparaffinic and saturated heterocyclic structures with some long-chain paraffinic and aromatic structures present. The ring systems may be connected through short carbon chains or bridges containing oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur.

ackleg rock drills are widely used in the mining industry and are known to generate high levels of hand-arm vibration which contribute to the development of the hand-arm vibration syndrome for exposed miners.1-3 To reduce the vibration levels, a prototype of an antivibration handle was developed as part of a previous study.4 To provide some bench marking for this handle prototype and to follow the evolution of its performance over time, a test bench was developed to characterize the vibration emission values of jackleg drills under controlled operating conditions. As the current ISO 8662 series of standards could not apply directly to this type of tool, there was a need to design and validate a test bench to evaluate the vibration emission values of jackleg drills, while taking into account the conditions specific to the operation of this type of tool. Methods A test bench including an energy absorber, was developed for testing jackleg drills based on the ISO 8662-3 standard 5. The energy absorber was bolted to a 3300 kg concrete block to ensure tool stability. A pictorial view of the device is given in Figure 1. For validation purposes, acceleration measurements at the handle of a conventional jackleg drill were taken simultaneously along the three axes (xh, yh and zh) in an underground rock drilling operation as well as on the test bench. The handle accelerations were measured for three different jackleg angles (13º, 28º and 43º) determined with respect to the floor. Moreover, each measurement was repeated at least three times to asses the data repeatability. [ ] Results As a preliminary validation of the test bench, Figure 2 provides a comparison of the frequency weighted rms acceleration spectrum measured along the zh-axis, for both underground drilling and operation on the test bench (28º jackleg angle in both cases). It is shown that the vibration measured on the handle of a jackleg drill operating on the test bench is representative of that recorded during typical rock drilling operations, despite the fact that some harmonics of the percussion frequencies are generated with a higher amplitude on the test bench. Steel tanks often corrode rapidly in oil fields where the gas produced with crude petroleum contains an appreciable quantity of hydrogen sulphide. In many instances working tanks have been discarded after only six months of service because of failure induced by corrosion. Aluminum has been used for some time in the fabrication of certain equipment incidental to the handling of oils containing hydrogen sulphide gas in solution, and has exhibited no serious corrosive action. These uses indicated that aluminum tanks might be equally effective in counteracting hydrogen sulphide corrosion. Consequently, in the spring of 1928, an all-aluminum stock tank of 500 barrels capacity and a "composite" tank of equal capacity, having a steel bottom and bottom ring and an aluminum top and top ring, were placed in service on the State-Lassiter lease of the Gulf Production Co. in Crane County, Tex. These tanks were under observation for one year, the test being sponsored by the Gulf Production Co., the Aluminum Co. of America, rind the Parkersburg Ric and Real Co. The results of this preliminary test sustained the belief that aluminum is highly resistant to hydrogen sulphide gas and likewise indicated the type or grade of aluminum which could be most economically used for lease tankage. However, in this preliminary test the Wake were not subjected to contact with the large quantities of highly concentrated brines such as often are associated and produced with crude oil. Therefore, it was suggested by representatives of .the Aluminum Co. that additional tests be made to include production conditions in which large quantities of brine would be handled, for past experience had shown that aluminum often is susceptible to the corrosive action of brines.
