The coal reserve base in the Western United States is presented for coalbeds amenable to extraction by underground mining methods. The Federal Bureau of Mines has abstracted data on the quality and quantity of coal resources/reserves from numerous State and Federal publications and modified such data as necessary to allow computer storage and retrieval. Tonnages are compiled by State, county, coalbed, and rank, and allotted to sulfur categories by statistical apportionment. The coal reserve base in those States west of the Mississippi River, amenable to underground mining, is estimated to be approximately 131 billion tons. Of this total, about 30.8 billion tons are bituminous coal, 100.2 billion tons are subbituminous coal, and 126.4 million tons are anthracite. Lignite is not considered for underground mining in this report. Included in this report is a glossary of terms applicable to a classification system for coal resources and reserves as jointly defined by the Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey. The purpose of this system is to provide for direct comparison or compilation of various resource/reserve data.

One of the details which the engineers observe closely in conducting tests on explosion-proof type equipment at the Pittsburgh experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines is the construction of covers and their means of fastening. These covers are of particular concern from a safety standpoint, because they are very liable to be frequently disturbed for the purpose of making inspection or repairs to internal parts of motors, controllers, etc. When depended upon to permit frequent inspections it is desirable from a practical operating standpoint that the cover be easily and quickly removed and replaced. The position that been taken by the Bureau of Mines is that the questio of ease with which covers will permit inspection should be determined by the mamu- facturer and the user. If the scheme used requires considerable effort, as in the removal of several bolts, it has been assumed that the one going to all this trouble to get the covers off could be trusted to put the cover back in place properly, especially as the approval plate generally calls specific attention to this point. Where a cover is simply screwed in place, fastened by a single bolt, or secured by a hing in or other similar arrangement, the bureau has not been willing to assume that the, cover would in all cases be properly fastened and has required further security by means of a lock or seal. In the course of its investigations the bureau has had occasion to inspect and test five types of covers as follows: (1) Covers having two plane surfaces bolted together. (2) Covers having two plane surfaces held together by lugs, clamps, or other means besides bolts. (3) Covers which have screw thread and fit a similar thread in the compartment. (4). Covers having plane surfaces with the addition of a tongue-and-groove joint at about the center of the plane surface and in general secured by hinge pins or similar means of fastening. (5) Covers in the form of an annular ring accurately fitted to a motor shell which can be rotated around the shell, and thus make easy access to inspection openings in the shell and rotated back again to effectively seal these openings. Tests. have also been made of large bolted covers having a smaller and more accessible cover within the large one, which could be opened for inspection purposes.

This paper covers briefly the particular field of dolomite and magnesium limestone; certain uses of high-calcium limestone are mentioned only to show more clearly the limita¬ tions of the magnesian rocks. Such a comparison is helpful because magnesium carbonate is essential for some uses; for others it is immaterial; and for many its presence in an appreciable amount is objectionable. Magnesium carbonate, occurring as a rock resembling limestone or dolomite, is described in United States Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6437, Magnesite. Other com¬ pounds of magnesium are described in United States Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6406, Magnesium Compounds (Other Than Magnesite). Limestone, geologically, is a rock composed essentially of calcium carbonate; commercially, however, the term may include dolomite and magnesium limestone.

This report presents low-temperature tar data from studies by the Bureau of Mines of tars produced in an externally heated (entrained state) pilot-plant-scale retort. Analytical data covering 20 low-temperature tars, derived from the. carbonization of various ranks of foreign and domestic coals, are tabulated. The character of the tar is discussed in relationship to carbonizing conditions and the rank of coal. It is seen that in carbonization techniques that employ entrainment or fluidization of the coal particle, carbonization conditions are secondary to coal rank with respect to tar-oil yields and composition. The influence of distillation conditions on recoverable yields of tar products is presented. The probable yield of commercially important chemical products, based on a ton of pure (moisture- and ash-free) coal, are predicted. INTRODUCTION Low-temperature tars produced by entrainment or fluidized carbonization techniques that employ internally heated reactors represent the most nearly primary tart produced by industrial processes. In brief, such a process involves the application of a heat gradient to the coal particle "boiling" or suspended in a turbulent state in the reactor chamber. Conditions are observed so that the coal particle remains suspended within the reaction zone by a gas stream for a time interval commensurate with maximum tar-oil yield. The heat necessary for the carbonization reaction may be obtained entirely from the hot (preheated) gas stream, or it may be derived partly from the combustion of the volatile products and char by the transport gases, usually air. The volatile material moves out of the carbonizing zone at a rate that approaches the velocity of the transport gas. Carbonizing conditions are ideal when a minimum particle residence time is obtained within the reactor at a given temperature and a maximum yield of condensable volatile matter is released. In industrial practice this objective is a compromise.

This project was started 8 June 1971. As set forth in our Proposal of 28 April 1970, responding to the RFP of 30 March 1970, the plan was twofold: 1) choose fluids and develop techniques for measuring coat porosity, and 2) construct a porosimeter for making such measurements, By the time plans for the porosimeter had been drawn up, the picture had changed; and it was found more advisable to do further researches on porosity rather than build the equipment. This development arose from a meeting with Dr. Fred N. Kissell on 14, 15 October 1971, annotated in our letter of 19 October 1971, and was contracted for 6 December 1971. The technical effort of the project was completed 7 May 1972. From the beginning it was realized that the ratio of 'hole volume to the whole volume' might be too simplistic a definition for coat porosity and that its measurement might be confounded by complications which were not yet known, We were hopeful that an exploration of fluids and techniques would provide early feedback on both these points which could be used in subsequent developments. Coalbeds were discovered in outcroppings of the Beacon group of sediments on the north end of the Willett Range ( altitude 77 ° 11 ' S , longitude 160 ° 20 ' E ) , Victoria Land , Antarctica , in December 1960 during an investigation undertaken as part of the U.S. Antarctic Research Program under the auspices of the National Science Foundation . Three separate exposures of coal or coaly material were found . Two of the exposures contain , respectively , eight and four beds of hard , compact , finely banded attrital coal ranging in thickness from 8 feet downward to a few inches , and reported to range in rank from mediumvolatile bituminous to semianthracite . The coals are associated with carbonaceous shales containing an abundant assemblage of fossil plants resembling those associated with the Permian coals of Australia and other Gondwana areas . The third exposure , apparently somewhat higher in the stratigraphic sequence , contains only coaly plant fragments scattered through a thin conglomerate and overlying sandstones . A sandstone bed that overlies these coal - bearing sandstones contains abundant logs and fragments of silicified wood . Preservation of features is poor , but one segment of a silicified stem suggests comparison with Rhexoxylon , a gymnospermous tree that usually is considered indicative of Triassic age . The Beacon sediments in this area have been invaded , broken , and uplifted by a massive series of diabase sills and dikes greater in volume than the intruded sediments . The heat emitted by these intrusives must have advanced the metamorphic development of the coals . However , there is no evidence of alteration to graphite , and coal found in direct contact with a diabase sill contains no vesicles or other usual evidences of natural coking . Either the pressure of overlying rocks inhibited the development of coke , or the coals had been metamorphosed beyond the coke forming stage before the igneous intrusion .

In a consideration of the various means whereby more economical and more efficient use may be made of the fuels in the United States, the possibility of obtaining for the production of illuminating gas other and cheaper fuels than the Pennsylvania coals demands attention. For the Government, as well as for private corporations and the householder, there can be no more economical and efficient way of using some coals than through the medium of illuminating gas. In the stove, gas reduces the labor cost of heat production and lessens the drudgery of the kitchen; burned in the Welsbach mantle, it is an excellent and cheap illuminant. In addition, the coke that remains after the gas has been recovered furnishes a smokeless fuel that has about the same heating value as anthracite. Hence any investigations that will indicate how local coals through proper treatment may be substituted for the higher priced and rapidly vanishing Pennsylvania gas coals will bring about lower prices for both gas and coke and will also aid to conserve for use in metallurgical processes the coking coals of Pennsylvania and of ot,her States. The annual drain on the gas-coal resources of this country and the importance of the gas and coke industries are indicated by the fact that 8,390,129 tons of coal were carbonized in retorts in the United States in 1909. The resulting salable products from by-product ovens were 15,791,220,000 cubic feet of coal gas, 6,254,644 tons of coke, and 60,126,000 gallons of tar. The total value of all by-products was about $28,508,637.

A larger measure of safety attended the operation of the stone quarries and related plants in the United States during the calendar year 1935 than in any other year for which annual records are available for the industry. The accident rate, covering fatalities and nonfatal injuries that disabled an employee beyond the remainder of the day on which the accident occurred, was 38.19 per million man-hours of work performed. The nearest approach to this favorable record was in 1932 when the rate was 38.48. The rate for 1934 was 41.82; hence the record for 1935 was 9 percent better than that for 1934. Reports from operating companies showed that 51 men were killed by accidents in 1935 and 4,152 men were injured. (See table 37.) The industry employed 73,005 men and performed 110,033,341 man-hours of labor, an average of 1,507 hours of work per man. Measured in man-days, the total volume of labor was 14,623,303, or an average of 200 days of 7.52 hours per day for each man employed. These figures are not strictly comparable with similar figures for the preceding year, as the, coverage of the industry was more complete for 1935 than for 1934 because special facilities were available to the Bureau of Mines for conducting the 1935 canvass that were not available for the 1934 canvass. Reports covering identical plants that were active both in 1934 and 1935 indicate a reduction of about 7 percent in the number of men employed in 1935. This fact suggests that the apparent increase in the number of workers in 1935 is attributable chiefly, if not entirely, to the more complete coverage of operating plants in 1935. The plants from which this inference is drawn employed 21,799 men in 1934 compared with 20,248 in 1935.

In conjunction with pilot steamflood tests in the Venango sands of Warren and Venango Counties, Pa., the Marx and Langenheim (4)3 calculations were adapted and programed for digital computer solution to predict test performance. The Monte Carlo technique was incorporated in the calculations to provide values of several variables which could not be adequately defined from available information. The computation methods are explained and the FORTRAN IV program listing is presented. Data and results of the prediction calculations for Venango oil sands are also shown.

The thrust of research reported in Part I was to collect in-situ data from exploration programs and the published literature, and to empirically establish distributional patterns for these variables. Since discontinui¬ties in a rock mass govern to a large extent its engineering properties and thus the performance of any slope in the mass, work has been devoted to determining the appropriate distributional forms for attitude spacing and length of discontinuities and to distributional properties of resis¬tance and deformability parameters. The conclusion from these analyses is that trace lengths are logNormally distributed and that joint spacing is Exponentially distributed, regardless of orientation of the sampling line, and regardless of whether each joint set is considered separately or not. Joint orientation (attitude) data representing 22 individual joint sets from eight sites (a total or approximately 20,000 joints), do nor strongly support any of the commonly used distributions as broadly applicable in practice. The autocorrelation )f geometric joint properties is also examined. However, no significant spatial correlation could be found even after extensive data manipulation. The investigation of resistance and deformability parameters starts with a review of mechanisms and models that are used to represent them. Review and statistical evaluation of approxi¬mately 2,000 discontinuity shear tests has shown that good statistical estimates for use in reliability analyses can be obtained for friction angles.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted ground pressure analysis of a wide abutment-type chain pillar in a two-entry gate road of a Western U.S. coal mine with an extremely weak immediate roof. About 15 m of fragile, low-strength mudstone lies between the seam and the lowest competent roof member. Three-and two-entry gate road designs with several pillar sizes and various secondary support systems have been employed to improve tailgate-entry stability, with varying results. This report discusses gate road layout and performance and secondary support effectiveness. The results of the pillar pressure study are compared to pillar loading predicted by a widely used pillar design method and to similar studies in other mines. A stability evaluation of the most recent longwall headgate, using the USBM Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) method, indicates marginal stability in first-panel mining and instability in second-panel mining. The ALPS method and the USBM Coal Mine Roof Rating system are used to evaluate tailgate-mining stability of the previous gate roads and to determine pillar and entry width and top coal thickness criteria for tailgate stability in future panels.

This publication is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of producing uranium ore on the Colorado Plateau. The information it contains was gathered in 1955-58 and applies to eight small operations. (See fig. 1.) Mining costs have increased since the data were I collected, but the information should be helpful in estimating future costs I at similar deposits. The Bureau of Mines had early experience in the production of carnotite-type ores on the Colorado Plateau.3 4/ Under a cooperative agreement with the National Radium Institute in 1914-16, the Bureau mined and concentrated carnotite ore for recovery of radium, uranium, and vanadium. The ore was taken from claims in or near Long Park Montrose County, Colo., about 3 mi. south of La Salle Mining Co.'s La Salle mine, which is one of the mines described in this report. The Bureau leased the claims from Crucible Steel Mining & Milling Co., a subsidiary of Crucible Steel Co. of America, and from 1914 to 1916 produced 990 tons of high-grade ore, containing 2.6 pct. U308, and about 2,000 tons of mill-grade ore, containing 0.85 pct. U308. The high-grade ore was shipped directly to a radium-recovery plant built in Denver in 1914 under the cooperative agreement. There, commercial methods of extracting uranium, vanadium, and radium from carnotite ores were developed by Bureau personnel. The lower grade ore was concentrated at a small mill in Long Park before being shipped to Denver. The final recovery was 69,000 lb. of U308 and 8.8 g. of radium. The direct mining cost of producing the high-grade ore, including the labor to hand sort and sack it, was $35.96 per ton. Freighting the ore 58 miles to Placerville, Colo., the nearest rail point on the Rio Grande Southern Railway, cost $25.28 per ton, which included $4.55 per ton for ore bags and twine. Recently it was shown the total energy method of spectrochemical analysis is suitable for the quantitative estimation of many of the elements of which ores are composed. It was shown how this method can be applied to the determination of germanium, tin, and lead. Continuing, this work, the present report deals with analyses for beryllium, zinc, cadmium; and indium. There are three basic problems in these investigations. The first is to study the influence of those elements that make up the greater part of an ore sample on the spectral-line intensities of the elements for which analyses are being made, the latter generally being the minor constituents. The second is to develop proper methods for the preparation of standard spectrographic curves. Finally, we are concerned with improvement in equipment and procedure, so that greater accuracy can be achieved. As discussed previously, it is better to study as groups those elements that belong to the same group in the periodic table because their spectra are similar. Beryllium, zinc, and cadmium are thus related. Indium was included in this work because it is, associated with zinc and cadmium in zinc ores.

1. The Pittsburgh bed is the most important bed in Ohio County, and virtually the entire production of coal in the county comes from this bed. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of-coal in place, are estimated at 365 million short tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 356 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of an investigation for developing and applying procedures for stabilizing excavations openings in highly yielding ground. The approach developed in this report involves nonlinear modeling of the progressive relaxation of the zones of rock mass around the excavations opening where Coulomb criterion of failure is exceeded. Stresses are calculated by using a computer code; Coulomb-failure condition is examined for both intact rock and joints (using strength parameters [~] and c). The rock mass in the failed zones is relaxed by reducing the Young's modulus of the rock based on an empirical formulation that is a function of the shape of the opening and the extent of the failed zone. In addition, the material in the failed zone is assigned reduced strength paramters 0' and c'. The limiting (or convergent) relaxed zone is obtained through an iterative process by manually changing the rock modulus and the strength parameters between iterations. Support pressures are computed by applying forces normal to the excavation surface. The approach is applied to the analysis of stability and support requirements for an entry in a longwall coal mine.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has been monitoring and studying seismic activity associated with mining in the Coeur d'Alene silver district of northern Idaho. New statistical methods of studying the stope-scale (1-to l00-m) seismicity at one Idaho silver mine are used in this report (part 1) and its companion (part 2). This report deals with methodology and its limitations. The recent concept of fractals and their seismological use is discussed and applied to mining-induced seismicity. Three types of fractal studies are addressed: spatial analyses (including temporal changes of spatial patterns), temporal analyses, and size analyses. Other statistical measures of mine seismicity are also addressed: event mean location, inter-event distance distribution skewness, temporal coefficient of variation, nearest neighbor and next event statistics, and event location planarity patterns. Each of the methodologies discussed (fractal and nonfractal) is presented using sample data from two stopes in the mine. It is shown that stope-scale, mining-associated microseismicity has a fractal nature. The usefulness of demonstrating fractality (scale invariance) for predictive or descriptive purposes depends on recognition of the factors affecting the calculation of fractal dimensions. Several methodological traps are illustrated that can lead to an incorrect conclusion.

Approach A water resistant extensometer is made by enclosing a rod-actuated transducer in a telescoping tube which is enclosed within an oil-filled outer housing. How It Works To assemble a water resistant extensometer, a cylinder -shaped transducer and two support rings are pushed into the small-diameter section of the telescoping tube where the transducer is held in place by friction. The outside of the small-diameter section of the telescoping tube is then greased and slid into the slightly larger-diameter section. See drawing. The cylinder-shaped transducer contains a potentiometer whose actuating arm is attached to a stainless steel extension rod that passes through one end of the telescoping tube. A similar rod is attached to the opposite end of the transducer body, and extends through the other end of the telescoping tube. Many of the so-called minor metals are derived as byproducts from the processing of lead and zinc concentrates in which they occur as minor constituents. Concentrates from some lead-zinc mineral deposits are more enriched in metals such as cadmium, arsenic, bismuth, silver, and selenium than are others, and these sources offer a continuing, assured supply of certain of these metals. Despite the age of the data collected, the Bureau of Mines feels it to be highly desirable to publish due to its relevance to the objective of the study which was to ascertain the flow of minor metals from certain smelter feeds Efforts to trace these metals through the complicated lead and zinc processing steps included trying to ascertain losses and mode of loss of these metals. Losses of some metals in processing may be surmised as occurring in gaseous and other emissions, or possibly in slags and residues.

Preliminary studies showed that direct hydrolysis of H2SiF6 to SiO2 and HF at elevated temperatures was subject to many mechanical difficulties, and that corrosion of construction materials was a serious problem. Elimination of SiO2 from the HF product was generally poor. An alternative procedure, hydrolysis of lime-neutralized H2SiF6 by steam at 950° to 1,100° C, yielded a product very low in SiO2. Condensates containing up to 300 g/1 HF were prepared.
