This paper describing mining methods at, the Eighty-Five mine of the Calumet and Arizona Mining Co., Valedon, N. Mex., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. The Eighty-Five mine is in southwestern New Mexico, 3 miles southwest of Lordsburg, Hidalgo County (see fig. 1). The mine produces normally 7,000 to 8,000 tons per. month of silicious copper-gold-silver ore, and employs approximately 200 men underground and 40 on-the surface. Mining is done by shrinkage and cut-and-fill methods.

The purpose of this report is to demonstrate the flexibility of rte sensing techniques for providing data with which to implement mined-lands reclamation in an efficient and cost-effective manner. An operational program is presented for using satellite remote sensing data, collateral data, and automated image analysis to provide: 1) an inventory of coal and copper mines and mine waste in Arizona, 2) techniques for periodic monitoring of mining areas using multitemporal classification and image prediction techniques, and 3) delineation of high priority areas for future reclamation and current land-use planning of Arizona mining areas based on environmental hazards indices computed using classified scenes and collateral data.

"INTRODUCTION Determination of the thermodynamic properties of metallurgically important compounds of chromium has been one of the activities of the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines. Earlier reports have dealt with the entropies 4/ 5/ of chromium, chromic oxide, and chromous and chromic chlorides, with the thermodynamic properties of the chlorides of chromium, 6/ and wits the thermodynamic properties of the carbides and oxide of chromium. 7/ Evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of chromite, FeO.Cr2O3, is desirable, as this material in impure form constitutes the only natural source of chromium of any consequence.Two general methods are available for directly determining heats of formation - (1) measurement of heats of combustion and (2) measurement of heats of solution. Neither of these methods is directly applicable at present to ferrous chromite, which accounts for the lack of previous data. Combustion of a stoichiometrical mixture of iron and chromium under conditions prevailing in a calorimetric bomb yields a mixture of iron and chromium oxides rather than chromite. None of the usual calorimetric solution media dissolve chromite at temperatures low enough for solution calorimetry. Sulfuric acid and an oxidizing agent, such as MnO2 or CrO3, are known to dissolve chromite, but the possible calorimetric use of t is medium would require long preliminary investigation. Consequently, recourse must be taken to some indirect method. At the start of the present work, the most promising method appeared to be the determination of equilibria in the selective, reduction of the iron in chromite by hydrogen;"

This report addresses remote monitoring of coal waste impoundments for stability. Existing automated geotechnical monitoring systems are described and reviewed along with details of instruments suitable for such systems. An impoundment in West Virginia which was in the construction stage was instrumented and monitored between July 1979 and may 1981. Sensors which measure surface and subsurface parameters including settlement, horizontal deflection, surface tilt, pore water pressure, seepage, pond level, and meteorological parameters were installed. Data from the 37 sensors were collected by on-site logger and transmitted by telephone to a central processing station in Seattle for recording and interpretation. Difficulties were encountered with telephone and powerline outages and malfunction of electronic units. Detailed descriptions of the design and performance of the system are provided along with evaluation and comparison with other systems. Recommendations for improving and expanding the capabilities of the monitoring system are given.

The Haile mine has been the outstanding gold-mining operation and the largest single producer of gold in the Appalachian region. Gold was discovered at the Haile in 1827, previous to the present operation, production has been nearly $4,500,000 (gold at $20.67 per ounce.) from somewhat over a million tons of ore, with an average extraction of about 70 percent. The Haile property, now operated by Haile Gold Mines, Inc., is in the southern part of Lancaster County, South Carolina, 3-1/2 miles northeast of the town of Kershaw and 55 miles north of Columbia, the State capital. (See fig. 1.) The corporation has a lease and purchase contract on 1,805 acres, covering the present productive area. In addition, it holds lease contracts on 1,500 acres additional adjacent to this area.

As part of its program to provide technology for reducing undesirable environmental impacts of mineral processing operations, the Bureau of Mines developed the citrate process for desulfurizing industrial stack gases that contain from 0.1 to 2 vol pet S02. In this regenerable flue gas desulfurization (FGD) process, S02 is absorbed from cleaned and cooled industrial flue gas with a citric acid-sodium citrate solution. The absorbed S02 is subsequently reacted with H2S to precipitate marketable elemental sulfur and regenerate the solution for recycle. Laboratory investigations of process parameters provided information for designing larger scale continuous operations. Information gathered from operation of two pilot plants, one at a copper smelter and one at a lead smelter, confirmed the laboratory results. Data were obtained for design and construction of a commercial-sized demonstration plant at the George F. Weaton Power Station, Monaca, PA. A preliminary operation of the plant was demonstrated, under a cost-sharing Bureau-industry contract. This bulletin describes the citrate process and gives results of the laboratory, pilot plant, and demonstration plant studies, as well as corrosion investigations.

"INTRODUCTION During the past 4 or 5 years the frequent occurrence of bumps in coal mines of the Cumberland field, in Harlan County, Ky., and Wise County, Va., has caused much apprehension among miners and mining officials of that region.These bumps have caused many deaths and injuries, and have been increasing in frequency. Eight men were killed and a number injured by bumps in the first 4 months of 1934. Their unpredictable occurrence and the usual absence of any preliminary warning tremors or sounds, such as ordinarily precede a large fall of roof, cause fear of other bumps and impair the morale of mine workers.Acknowledgments This report on bumps in coal mines of the Cumberland coal field of Kentucky and Virginia is based on an investigation made at the urgent request of .the Harlan County Coal Operators Association, through James F. Bryson, director of safety of the association, to the Director of the United States Bureau of Mines, following a series of disastrous bumps in. Harlan County, Ky., and Wise County, Va. The request was granted and the writer detailed to undertake the investigation, which was made in June 1934.The officials of certain operating companies in the Cumberland field gave every facility for examining the conditions accompanying bumps in their mines. This final report describes the work accomplished under U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract #H0242011 - "Feasibility of Automated Rail Haulage Systems in Underground Coal Mines." The report outlines the base for the development and evaluation of automated rail haulage systems in terms of the service requirements for haulage systems in underground coal mines, and of the performance of existing haulage systems. A generalized automated rail haulage system concept is defined. A safety impact analysis of automating the mainline portion of the underground system indicates a 50% reduction in injuries and fatalities. A cost effectiveness (over the total life cycle) study for the system indicates a cost benefit can be obtained from implementing an automated rail system. The design specifications for the total automated rail haulage system - including subsystems and components -are developed, and the equipment types and general design approaches evaluated, with selections outlined. A detailed conceptual design for a prototype automated system is described. Conclusions and recommendations are presented, and a program plan devised for implementing a proto-type automated rail haulage system demonstration in an operating underground coal mine by 1980.

The Black Hills Mineral Atlas briefly summarizes all pertinent date available on the mines and mineral deposits in the Black Hills that have been explored, developed, mined, or located. The purpose of the atlas is threefold: First, from available date the general potentialities of the Black Hills region can be determined, although it is not possible to calculate actual ore reserves; second, it will provide the necessary basic information regarding a given property or commodity for further detailed study; and third, the compilation is a comprehensive directory of Black Hills deposits.

Large quantities of zinc-base die-cast scrap containing 3 to 4 percent aluminum are presently refined by mixing with other secondary zinc products such as galvanizer dross and distilling in a retort. The Bureau of Mines investigated alternate aluminum removal processes utilizing low-cost fluxes. Basing the investigation on the metallurgical principle that a reactive impurity can be removed from a less reactive matrix metal by melting under a flux consisting of a salt or oxide of a metal less reactive than the impurity, three separate flux mixtures were studied. In the first flux system, [FeCl3] + NaCI (the active component is underlined), part of the aluminum is' eliminated by the formation of volatile aluminum chloride and the rest by the creation of a high melting point iron-aluminum intermetallic compound that can be separated from the remaining molten zinc by filtration. Aluminum removal in the second system, [Fe203] + CaClz + NaCI, is effected by the formation of the iron-aluminum compound and possibly aluminum oxide. The third system, spent sal skimmings--essentially a mixture of [ZnCl2], NH4Cl, and ZnO, depends solely on aluminum chloride formation. Of the three flux systems investigated, the best results obtained were with system 3. Aluminum was reduced in the molten die-cast alloy from 4.10 percent to 0.01 percent when depleted sal skimmings were used.

Under this program two tape recording and triggering systems were developed and delivered for use in the Bureau of Mines microseismic program. The systems are designed to improve the effectiveness of the Bureau owned Sangamo 3500 series and SABRE VI instrumentation tape recorders. The system is designed to capture random microseismic data, digitize and temporarily store these data, start the tape recorder; and then transfer the data to magnetic tape for permanent storage. The system is designed to pack data on tape such that the tape may be simply played back through galvo drivers onto an oscillograph such that a continuous series of analog records, with corresponding time of day information, are reproduced without excessive oscillograph paper waste or the need for the operator to search for valid events.

This Bureau of Mines publication reviews 237 papery on radiometric prospecting, which is the measurement of naturally occurring radioactivity in the earth's surface and its application to petroleum and natural gas exploration. Many theories and documented surveys are listed in both support and refutation of this reported phenomenon, and the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to obtain direct field information in order to determine the statistical credibility of a radiometric method of predicting petroleum accumulation.

"Reserves This investigation shows that the Poplar Creek is the most important bed in Scott County from a production standpoint. Although the Poplar Creek bed contains the largest reserve, the Big Mary has a larger recoverable reserve. Estimates of reserves also have been made for the Pewee, Red Ash, Windrock, Upper Pioneer, Jellico, and White Oak beds.Known measured and indicated reserves of coal, based on a minimum bed thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 143 million tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 74 million tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.Recoverable reserves of coal are estimated in beds 28 inches and more thick. This thickness is about the minimum now being mined by hand loading onto conveyors in the Appalachian region. The weighted average recovery for all beds in Scott County, as determined by this investigation, is 52.4 percent. This percentage is based on the total thickness of coal in the bed (less partings three-eighths inch or more thick) rather than on the thickness of the coal mined. Based on the weighted average percentage of recovery for all beds in Scott County, the recoverable reserves of coal are estimated to be 39 million tons as of January 1, 1954.Coal Analyses Chemical analyses of coal samples taken for this study show that the coal in Scott County is of high-volatile a bituminous rank except the Upper Pioneer bed, which is shown to be high-volatile B bituminous. The Pewee bed shows typical low-sulfur characteristics. The high ash and sulfur in the Big Mary are characteristic of that bed. The Poplar Creek is moderately low in ash and sulfur in areas where there is no parting in the bed."

The computer program described in this user's guide provides for the static, three-dimensional, linear and nonlinear analysis of structural and geological systems by the finite element method. The guide describes the capabilities and general features of the program and shows how input is prepared. A number of recent advances in finite element theory and computer technology are incorporated in the program. Nonlinear material properties are provided for, including isotropic, anisotropic, and time-dependent material properties, gravity loading, simulation of a sequence of excavation or construction, and a slip or joint element. The finite elements include beam, rod, axisymmetric and plane quadrilateral, hexahedron, thick shell, and axisymmetric and plane joint. The program also has an automatic mesh generator to minimize user input preparation for continuum finite element meshes.

This experiment, one of a series on underground gasification of coal, was an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines of hydraulic fracturing as a means of increasing the air acceptance of a coalbed to permit introducing combustion air and removing product gases. Specific objectives of the investigation included: (1) Fracturing a coalbed; (2) determining the distance the coal was physically affected; (3) ascertaining the effect of the fracture on air acceptance of the coalbed; and (4) gasifying the coal. The coal was fractured with a fluid consisting of 15,000 lb. of sand mixed with 10,000 gal. of fuel oil and 5,000 gal. of kerosine, injected at pressures up to 900 p.s.i.g. and rates up to 425 g.p.m. The oil served as the fracturing medium, and the sand as a propping agent to hold the fracture open. From the fracture point, (the place in the bed where the fluid was injected), the fracture extended 200 ft. or more along the face cleats, somewhat less along the butt. cleats, and was confined to the coalbed. At the fracture point, the bed accepted about 500 std. c.f.m. of air, which was an etghtyfold increase. Fracture effects were extensive, as airflow was noted from old mine workings and outcrops 600 to 800 ft. from the fracture point. It is probable the actual fracture was much less than 600 ft. and that normal coalbed permeability beyond the fracture limits was responsible for this flow. This indicated that effects of the fracture extended beyond the area of coal physically affected. Although no attempt was made to gasify coal more than 200 ft. away, these effects plus the natural permeability of the bed likely would permit combustion beyond the outer limit of the fracture. As these experiments continued for more than 2 years, and greater air acceptance due to the fracture was observed at the beginning of each test, it is apparent that the effects of the fracturing persist for a considerable time.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed an intrinsically safe carbon monoxide (CO) monitoring system for mines by coupling a fiber-optic data telemetry (FODT) system with a prototype electro-chemical CO monitor. The CO monitoring system can be used in a coal mine as one component of an early fire warning system. This system may be used in belt haulage entries when the entries are used for supplying ventilation air to working places. The FODT accepts a 0.1-to 1.1-V analog signal from the monitor and converts it to pulses (0 to 5 V) at frequencies from 1.1 to 11 kHz that drive a light-emitting diode (LED). An electrically nonconducting fiber-optic cable carries the LED signal to a remote receiver. The receiver analyzes the incoming light signal and displays the measured CO concentration in parts per million. This report discusses the performance of the FODT system and characteristics of the CO monitor such as response times, linearity, and temperature and pressure effects.

The Tri-State, or Joplin, zinc and lead mining district in south- western Missouri and adjoining, parts of Kansas and Oklahoma is one of the great mining districts of the world. It is in flat-lying or gently rolling agricultural country near industrial centers and coal, oil, and gas fields. The nearly horizontally, lying bedded rocks in which the ore bodies are found were originally limestone but are now largely chert containing minor percent- ages of dolomite and other minerals. The ore occurs in nearly vertical fis- sure zones, large and small, and in blanket (sheet-ground) deposits. The mining depth ranges from surface diggings to $50 feet. The average tenor of the ore mined, in recent years is much lower than that of ore produced in other large zinc and lead districts of the United States. Mining and mill- ing costs are low because of the shallowness of mining, amenability of ores to concentration, efficiency resulting from long experience of management and labor, and other factors. The operators comprise many small and medium-size producing companies and partnerships, as well as individuals and a few larger producers. About 7,000 men are employed in the mines and mills during normal industrial activity. The concentrates produced are sold f.o.b. the mill bins to local representatives of smelting companies at prices quoted on the Joplin market. The productive life of the district began with the discovery of lead near Joplin in 1848, but output was not large until after mining for zinc began near Granby in 1871. In most of the intervening years through 1945 the district produced more zinc than any other field, and it generally ranked third or fourth in the United States in lead production. Figures compiled from sources given later in this paper show a total output for the district from the beginning through 1945 of 20,755,020 tons of zinc concentrates and 3,334,057 tons of lead concentrates valued altogether at $1,110,058,581 in the mill bins. The output, in terms of recoverable metals, was 10,609,408 tons of zinc and 2,529,121 tons of lead, valued in all, at the average yearly market prices of the metals, at $1,691,282,419. During the 39 years (1907-1945) for which complete figures are available, the annual output of the district fluctuated from 23 to 66 percent of the total United States mine output of zinc and from 5 to 18 percent of the total lead; the averages for the period were 40 percent for zinc and 11 percent for lead. peak yearly production was attained in 1926, with an output of 423,800 tons of recoverable zinc and 102;117 tons of lead. Since that yoar the production rate has trended downward, accentuated at first by the depression in the thirties and later ameliorated somewhat under the stimulus of heavy demand and higher metal prices during World War II; the output in 1945 was 139,274 tons of recovorablo zinc and 23,556 tons of load. The above figures show the groat contribution made by the Tri-State district in the past toward the country's supplies of primary zinc and lead, cspecially zinc. However, the district's production is expected to decline both in quantity and in proportion of total United States mine output unless important discoveries are made. This report on the mining and milling of tungsten ores is the second part of a general study of the domestic tungsten industry. The first part, comprising general information on tungsten, has been printed as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6821. The purpose of these papers is to increase efficiency in the mining, preparation, and utilization of the tungsten resources of the United States. The tungsten industry forms so small a part of the vast mining and metallurgical operations of the illation that private metallurgists have not had enough inducement to give special attention to the recovery of tungsten minerals from the ores, and many of the small companies are financially unable to undertake research work. A study of the milling of tungsten ores reveals that further improvement is possible, especially in the treatment of slimes. Recent experimental work by the Bureau shows that the flotation process is applicable to certain tungsten ores. The future of the tungsten industry it the United States depends to a great extent on utilization of the low-grade deposits of the contact-metamorphic type.

[Many methods of analyzing tar oils for their tar acid and base content have bun employed in connection with both academic and. industrial investigations. Most of these analytical procedures are based on the diminution in volume caused by extraction with alkali and mineral acids (contraction method), although other methods haves been employed.4/ In many instances the adoption of an analytical method was not preceded by adequate study, and, as a consequence, the literature, on this subject is conspicuous for its contradictory claims and recommendations. It has bin shown in the, case of certain synthetic solutions5/ that large errors may result if the analysis is carried out by simple extraction with alkali and mineral acids.]
