The mineral graphite, a form of carbon, has been known for hundreds of years, and, was first used commercially as a coloring agent. Its true identity, however, was not recognized until the end of the eighteenth century, and its commercial development did not become extensive until near the close of the ninteenth century.

Batch tests of coals and coal-derived materials were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine their effectiveness in removing organic contaminants (COD or chemical oxygen demand, comprising those organic compounds that can be chemically oxidized, and ABS or alkylbenzene sulfonate, common household detergents) from the final effluent of secondary-treated waste waters. The adsorptive capacities of flyashes, coals, including at least one sample of each rank found in this country, pretreated coals, and miscellaneous materials including commercial chars and coke, were determined and compared with that of granular activated carbon. The coals, though not as effective as activated carbon, possess an economic advantage--they are relatively inexpensive, and they can still be burned as fuel without any loss of fuel value after use in waste¬water treatment. A hvcb coal was found to be one of the best, having about one-fourth the capacity of activated carbon for COD, adsorbing about 4 percent of its weight before it became saturated. Several coals contained constituents that added to the COD content of the treated water. Thus knowledge of the performance of the coal is necessary to insure selection of a proper coal as adsorbent.

To allow the controlled yielding of mine walls in order to reduce rock-burst hazards and reduce maintenance caused by excessive squeezing forces. Approach Rock bolts that elongate and continue to sustain a load, have been fabricated and tested. This device is an adoption of a concept originally developed in South Africa for use where unusually adverse conditions may warrant the added cost. How It Works A coupling in the rock bolt allows controlled elongation if the load increases beyond the bolt's design strength. (The load can build up either slowly, as during heaving, or rapidly, as before a rock burst.) The elon¬gation of one or more rock bolts surrounding a mine opening, allows the rock to move from its original position to c new position in a controlled manner. The lignite deposits of the United States represent a huge potential source of fuel for power generation. It has been estimated that lignite constitutes about 24 percent of the remaining National reserves of solid fuel on a tonnage basis and about 15 percent of the reserves on a B.t.u. basis. (See sec. 3, part 1.) The major portion of these reserves is in North Dakota. Lignite has been used locally for domestic heating since the first settlers burned it at forts and fur-trading posts as early as 1855. Some of the first studies of the use of lignite in steam boilers were conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines from 1910 to 1920 (15, 19) 1/ However, the commercial utilization of lignite as fuel for producing power developed slowly. Not until about 1925 was any really successful lignite industrial fuel-blaming equipment developed. Since then the commercial use of lignite as a fuel for producing power has been increasing steadily.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated synthetic fluorspars as substitutes for natural fluorspar in basic oxygen steelmaking using a high-temperature rotational viscometer and a quarter-ton basic oxygen furnace (BOF). Consider-able variation in stability and BOF slag fluidizing properties were found when using the initial synthetic products, but improved synthesis methods produced synthetic fluorspars that were generally comparable to natural fluorspar in laboratory testing. Trials in the furnace showed the synthetic products to be operationally the equivalent of natural fluorspar. Higher sulfur and phosphorus contents in some of the synthetic materials did not adversely affect the steel chemistry. Analyses of wet scrubber samples showed evidence that the pelletized synthetic fluorspars experienced greater physical and chemical disintegration than did natural fluorspar. It was also found that operation of a BOF without fluorspar is possible when making low-carbon steels because iron oxide is intrinsically generated as the slag fluidizer.

This paper is the result of a comparative study of ultimate coal analyses made and published by the United States Geological Survey. This study, at first casually undertaken to devise an acceptable classification of coals based on chemical analyses, was continued in connection with a microscopic examination of a number of the coals. The initial comparisons, made from a relatively small number of analyses, not only confirmed a previous conviction that the elimina- tion of oxygen incident to the development of a coal is economically far more important than has been generally suspected, but also showed that oxygen is very nearly as harmful as ash in coal. The immediate purposes of the present study were: (a) To deter- mine more definitely, from a comparative examination of a large number of ultimate analyses, the relative importance of oxygen as an impurity in various coals; (b) to illustrate the transition between various grades of coal of similar origin-transition mainly due to progressive devolatilization, brought about more or less directly by dynamic influences; (c) to ascertain the relative proportions of oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon in coking coals, especially with refer- ence to a theory tentatively framed to explain the coking quality; and (d) to forecast the probabilities of successfully treating a large number of coals so as to render them amenable, in a softened condition, to satisfactory study under the microscope. Although the hypothesis as to coking quality finds but partial support in the chemical analyses, its consideration has led to a method of predicting from an analysis with a fair degree of certainty whether any given coal will coke by the ordinary process. The unbroken transition between coals originally similar but now classed in widely different groups, whether of the same age or of different ages, as a result of dynamochemical action, appears demonstrated by the analyses as well as by field observation. Late in 1974 at a meeting with the Cedar Coal Company in Chelyan, West Virginia, a very definite requirement for an automatic heat sensing fire suppression system for the type coal augers used in their mine was revealed. Several fires had been experienced, and while equipment loss was a consideration, operator safety was also a concern. As of that date no one had developed an automatic system specifically for fire suppression on coal augers. II. EQUIPMENT DEVELOPMENT As a result of the above meeting, an unsolicited proposal was made to the Bureau on March 1, 1975, and a contract was issued to provide the following services: A. Determine and define fire hazard problem on Compton Coal Auger. B. Modify or otherwise mike a Lease "AFEX" system suitable for protecting the fire hazard area developed in paragraph "A". C. Make installation of "AFEX" system. D. Monitor installation for reliability for a period of 90 days after installation. C. ConJurt a simulated fire test to determine effectiveness on system.

ESFI sponsors National Electrical Safety Month each May, and engages in public education campaigns and proactive media relations to help reduce property damage, personal injury and death due to electrical accidents. In its investigation of deposits of strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines did same development drilling at the Perkiomen Creek deposits, 5 miles east of Phoenixville, Pa. This area was the center of much copper mining from 1851 to 1858. The most productive vein was the Perkiomen-Ecton mines, owned by the Perkiomen Consolidated Mining CQ. The mines were closed in 1858, and no further production has been recorded. The Perkiomen-Ecton vein ranges in thickness from 2 to 19 feet. The principal mineral of value is chalcopyrite, with minor amounts of galena and sphalerite. No definite record was found as to the grade of ore min d. It was reported that 617 tons of 18-percent copper are obtained by hand sorting 12,200 tons of mine-run ore was shipped in 1851-1852. To cut the vein below the old mine workings, the Bureau of Mines diamond-drilled five holes aggregating 2,216.2 feet. The vein, where intercepted by drilling, carried narrow stringers of copper, lead, and zinc minerals.

Volatilization in retorts has been, until recently, the only commercial process of producing spelter, hence the zinc mine operators have had to meet the terms of the zinc smelters in regard to the following requirements: (1) Minimum percentage of zinc the ore must contain; (2) the chemical combination of the zinc in the ore; (3) the proportion present of those elements that interfere with the suceessful recovery of the zinc when the ore is retorted. In consequence of these requirements, only a comparatively small proportion of the zinc ores mined can be shipped directly to the smelters.

The Siamese mining lew, which is cited as "The Sian Mining Act, 2461 (1919)," was enacted February 14, B. E. 2461 (A. D. 1919), corresponding to the ninth year of His Majesty's reign. This act replaces the Sian Mining Act of 1901 and repeals all edicts, decrees, laws, rules, and local customs relating to mining the terms of which are inconsistent with the new law. It shall in- clude all subsequent alterations or additions, as well as all rules issued by the Minister (of Land and Agriculture) already in force or to be brought into force publication in the Government Gazette to be deemed sufficient notice of any modifications or alterations. (Art. 1, 2, 5, 83, and 85.) Legislation passed recently amending certain provisions of the mining law for the purpose of controlling the sale of minerals is the mining amendment act, B. E. 2474, given August 21, 1931 (7th year of the present reign), which repeals provisions of the mining act, B. 3. 2461, and also all rules and regula- tions relating to mining that are inconsistent with the amending ect. Under article 25 of the mining amendment act, B. E. 2474, ministeriel regulations (of the Minister of Agriculture) were issued August 21, 1931. Oxyfuel combustion is currently one of the principal technological options being considered for capturing carbon dioxide from pulverised coal power plants. In oxyfuel combustion, coal is burnt in a mixture of recycled flue gases and added oxygen instead of in air. In principle this yields a flue gas containing only carbon dioxide, water vapour and small amounts other impurities. Oxyfuel combustion is superficially similar to combustion in air, but there are inevitable differences. This paper describes ignition tests on pulverised coal suspensions using a suite of coals of different rank and from different countries of origin and over a range of oxygen and coal concentrations of interest for oxyfuel combustion. The ignition tests were carried out using the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 20-litre explosion chamber. The purpose was to determine how easily the various coals ignite and burn in mixtures of O2 and CO2 compared to their combustion in air. The residual char volatile and ash contents for the ignition residues were measured using a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA), allowing Q factors (i.e., enhancement in apparent volatile yield due to higher heating rates and/or heterogeneous reactions) to be determined and compared. An ignition index has been derived from the explosion and char data. This index has been used to rank low volatile coals for ignition propensity in air. The results show that to obtain ignition and combustion comparable to that in air, the oxyfuel O2-CO2 gas mixture must contain over 30% O2. Keywords: CO2 capture, combustion, pyrolysis, oxyfuel.

Develop tools that mine personnel can use to comply with 30 CFR,Part 47. Background The new MSHA rule, 30 CFR, Part 47 (also known as the HazCom rule), requires all mines to develop a written program to track hazardous chemicals at their sites. More specifically, the rule requires that mines list all chemicals and determine which are hazardous; develop a written Hazard Communication Program; label all containers used to store hazardous chemicals; obtain or develop Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all chemicals stored or produced; provide miners with training in working around hazardous chemicals; and make information about hazardous chemicals available to all workers. All mines with six or more employees must have complied with the new rule by September 23, 2002, and mines with five or fewer employees will have to be in compliance by March 21, 2003.

Numerous investigators have studied grinding. Each has contributed his bit to a literature that is difficult to correlate. Too many of the results have been transformed into curves with so many "inflection points" and "counterflexures" that they obscure the issue. Some of the investigators have neglected the very essence of the problem, namely the power and the amount of material to which a known amount of work was applied. The purpose of this paper is to show the ease with which results can be interpreted when these quantities are duly recognized. Some grinding tests will be given for illustration. Grinding studies are of two kinds: (1) Study of the character of the ore and (2) study of the performance of the machines. Several ores may be crushed by a given machine, or several machines may be used on a given ore. The illustrations given in this report cover both objectives.

Early in 1912, from information received by the Bureau of Mines, it became evident that quantities of valuable radium-bearing ore from Colorado were being exported for manufacture in foreign countries and that at least part of the manufactured product was being returned to this country and sold at a price entirely incommensurate with that received by the miner and the prospector. Consequently, in line with its efforts to increase efficiency in the mining and treatment of mineral resources, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of conditions. Results of this preliminary investigation were published, in the summer of 1913, as Bulletin 70,a which gave an outline of the radium deposits of the West, the conditions of mining, the wastes involved, and the status of the production of radium from its ores. At about this time newspapers and medical journals were publishing statements regarding the value of radium in cancer therapy. These reports, although many of them were exaggerated, brought out clearly the remarkable virtue of the gamma rays for the treatment of cancer and other malignant growths. In view of the fact that the largest known supplies of radium ore in the world are in the States of Colorado and Utah and on the public lands of the United States, it was deemed highly important for the Bureau of Mines to study the production of radium in detail. Such study, it was hoped, would enable the prospector and miner to obtain a fairer price for the ores and would furnish information necessary in case Congress appropriated funds to develop methods for extracting radium from ore on the public lands under Government supervision, to be supplied at cost to the hospitals of the Army, Navy, and Public Health Service.

"FOREWORD (By O. P. Hood, Chief mechanical engineer).During the war certain suggestions concerning power production were made by Mr. Walter E. Trent to the War Inventions Board, and at the request of the War Department facilities for experimental work were provided on the grounds of the. Bureau of Standards.The experiments were along the line of controlling the conditions of combustion in a closed space. In order to reduce slag troubles, experiments were carried out for removing ash from powdered coal. After the war, work along this line was continued, resulting in the Trent Process, which agitates or beats together powdered coal, water and oil.A new technology had previously been given to ore preparation by the use of small quantities of oil in water with froth flotation, and although the methods, results and mixtures of the Trent Process were quite different, yet the same physical phenomena of differential wetting used, and the possibility of there being interesting results in fuel technologic was evident. A cooperative agreement was entered into, whereby the Bureau of Mines was to investigate the underlying physical and chemical facts and make them public, and the Trent Corporation was to pay the cost of the investigation.The several reports as made have been available to any one interested, and are now to be published. While the Bureau of Mines felt justified in investigating the physical phenomena so far as might be done in a laboratory, and so far as public interest might reach, no attempt was made to discover the commercial possibilities which development might bring. The question of commercial possibilities must be left for commercial enterprise to answer."

In 1911 the Director of the United States Bureau of Mines instructed the chief mining engineer of the bureau , during an investigation of coal-mine safety conditions in Europe, to ask the directors of the various mine-experiment stations whether they would favor a European conference . The majority of the officials in immediate charge of experiment stations favored the plan , and Victor Watteyne, inspector general of Belgium, suggested that the United States call such a conference to be held immediately after the Eighth International Congress of Applied Chemistry, which was to assemble in New York on September 3, 1912 . Accordingly, invitations were issued by the United States Government to those countries having mine-experiment stations , namely, Austria-Hungary, Belgium, France, Germany , and Great Britain, and to those that contemplated the establishment of such stations , Canada and Mexico . All but Great Britain and Canada accepted ; Mexico designated a representative , who later found it impossible to come. The Government of Great Britain in declining, expressed regret at its inability to accept ; an informal statement was made that the opening of the experimental gallery at Eskmeals , England , occupied the attention of the officials in charge . Delegates were appointed by their respective Governments as follows: Austria-Hungary, Julian Czaplinski , royal mining engineer. Belgium, Victor Watteyne , inspector general of mines . France, J. Taffanel, director of the Lievin experiment station . Germany, Carl Beyling, bergassessor, director of Dortmund experiment station. United States , Charles E. Munroe, consulting explosives expert and George S. Rice, chief mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines . Subsequently Mr. William O'Connor , a mining engineer and mine operator of Wales , who opportunely appeared at the Pittsburgh station with letters of introduction from the South Wales Institute of Engineers and from prominent mining officials of Great Britain , was unanimously invited to take part in the meeting as an unofficial representative of Great Britain . Messrs . Beyling, Taffanel , and Watteyne were met in New York on September 3, by George S. Rice, who accompanied them to Washington, where they were welcomed by Director J. A. Holmes , of the Bureau of Mines , and where , with the delegates to the Eighth International Congress of Applied Chemistry , they were presented to President Taft . Mr. Taffanel was unfortunately called back to France just before the scheduled time of the conference on account of a mine disaster ; the other delegates , including Mr. Czaplinski , convened at Pittsburgh on the morning of September 14. Mr. Rice, representing the Director of the Bureau of Mines , acted as temporary chairman , and called the meeting to order.

To alleviate the hazard to personnel and danger to equipment caused by fires on large, mobile vehicles. The Approach: A system which automatically senses a fire at its early stage of development, warns the driver of the danger, and activates fire extinguishers in the zone of combustion, How It Works: The automatic fire protection system utilizes both thermal and optical sensors to detect the heat or light given off by a fire in the area of concern (Fig. 1). The system warns the driver of the hazard and then automatically extinguishes the fire with pressurized S-C class powder. The system can also be activated manually from the operator's cab or from ground level. Further, the automatic sequencing of the system can be manually overridden by the driver if he determines that the fire sensors have malfunctioned to cause a false alarm.

Lightweight aggregates have become increasingly important to the construction industry. From 1953 to 1960, the quantity of the aggregates used in concrete block, precast and prestressed concrete, and monolithic structures increased about 92 percent. The present study was conducted in Bureau of Mines Area IV which encompasses the South-Central States of Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. This is an administrative area and does not delimit a market area or imply an economic unit. Because of the increasing importance of metropolitan areas in evaluating economic growth, significant data showing relationships between growth of the metropolitan areas and the lightweight aggregate industry are included.
