Conventional methods for determining the size of dust suspended in a gas require that agglomerates (clusters of particles) first be broken into particles, but in evaluating industrial dust-removing equipment the size of the agglomerates as they actually exist in the gas stream is far more important. This paper presents results of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines to develop methods for determining the size of dust agglomerates suspended in a gas stream. The studies are part of the Bureau's continuing research on synthetic liquid fuels. The size and size-distribution of agglomerates as they exist when the gas reaches the filter was determined by using a membrane filter in conjunction with a dust count under a microscope. A membrane filter is a cellulosic sheet about 150 microns thick containing millions of holes per square centimeter--holes of uniform diameter that run directly through the sheet without interconnection.

The linear expansion of high-purity oxides of yttrium, cerium, samarium, europium, and dysprosium was determined by the interferometric method for the temperature range 25° to 1,000° C. Single-crystal magnesium oxide and single-crystal aluminum oxide were used as reference materials. The bulk density and crystal form of the nonreference materials also were determined. The coefficients of linear expansion in the range 25° to 1,000° C were found to be 8.10 x 10-6 for yttria, 12.10 x 10-6 for ceria, 10.81 x 10'6 for samaria (monoclinic), 10.35 x 10-6 for europia (monoclinic), and 8.13 x 10-6 for dysprosia, each given in centimeters per centimeter per degree Centigrade. A detailed investigation of the interferometric technique for measuring thermal expansion in this temperature range was made. The interferometer was found to be a precise tool but only when adequate precautions were taken. These precautions are described.

On Thursday, March 18, 1937, the country was shocked by news of a terrific explosion at the New London, Tex., school, which caused the death of 280 pupils avid 14 teachers. The explosion occurred at about 3:05 p.m. in the largest of the 11 school buildings on the campus. Fire 1 shows this building, marked "Main high school building", with respect to other buildings, pipe lines, oil wells, and gas lines or the property.

The purposes of the research were to assess the applicability of new accident investigation methods to mining accidents, and to adapt those found to be applicable in the development of a new methodology for use in mining. The development included field testing, evaluation and modification of the new methodology. The report is in two volumes. Volume one discusses the background research, the design of a methodology for field evaluation, preliminary field tests in Utah mines, and work done to prepare for a formal, complete evaluation by federal government mine safety officials. This, volume 2, discusses the field evaluation done by the contractor and cooperating mines after the program was re-directed by the Bureau of Mines. It relates to research done during a period of approximately eighteen months, ending in April, 1983.

The Bureau of Mines Minerals Information organization collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. This data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), to place the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines Minerals Information activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral- material production or consumption.

The project investigated the impacts of coal and mineral storage piles on both ground and surface water quality. The study consisted of two major tacks, Task 1 had two phases. The first phase was field investigations in which ten cons and mineral stockpile sites (5 coal, 5 mineral: phosphate, lead, copper, iron, uranium) across the country were visited to determine the actual impart of coal and mineral stockpiles on writer quality. The second phase of Task I was a series of leaching experiments in which drainage from the ten coals and minerals was controlled and monitored to survey the extent to which storage piles release toxic ions to ground and surface waters. Task IT was n review of pollution abatement techniques with three generic treatment examples applied to lead-zinc ore, eastern coal, and uranium ore stockpile leachate. Major conclusions drawn from the completion of Tasks I and II include: water quality impacts are site specific, there is n high correlation between sulfide content of u material and its solution potential, and the selection of the best treatment alternative for n specific coal or mineral storage area must be based on site-specific criteria, pilot studies on representative leachate samples, and sound engineering design.

High-volatile A bituminous coal from the Allen mine, Las Animas County, Colo., blended with char produced from the same coal yielded accept-able metallurgical coke in a 500-lb movable-wall test oven. Nineteen experimental runs were carried out using several concentration levels of two different chars, 5.6 and 19.6 percent volatile matter, produced by entrainment carbonization of the base coal. With the higher-volatile char, an acceptable coke was produced at a 22.5-percent concentration; the lower-volatile char did not produce an acceptable coke at the concentrations investigated.

Introduction MINING IS THE BRANCH OF INDUSTRY involving the exploration and removal of minerals from the earth (figure 1). Mining is one of the oldest and most important endeavors of humankind, because it provides the raw ingredients for most of the material world around us and, like agriculture, is the lifeblood of civilization. The main objective of any type of mining is to remove the valuable material economically and safely with minimum damage to the surrounding environment. The Earth has many natural resources on which we depend that must be mined. Coal, oil, gas, and other mineral fuels are used for heating electricity, and numerous industrial processes. Nonfuel minerals such as iron ore, precious metals, and industrial metals, and nonmetallic materials like sodium and potassium are used in chemical and agricultural applications. Even crushed stone used in road building and other construction projects must be mined. Mining affects our standard of living and impacts almost everything we do. A myriad of items that we use in our homes and offices and for transportation, communications, and national defense all require minerals (figure 2). For example, more than 30 different minerals are needed to make a television or telephone! Table 1 lists several commonly mined materials and some of the end uses in our daily lives.

Component failures in the electrical control circuits of mining machines account for a large percentage of the total downtime of the machine. Once a failure has occurred it is always a tedious and usually a time-consuming task to locate the failed component. Moreover, the pressure to quickly locate the cause of a delay can lead to compromises in safety. Thus an onboard diagnostic system, essential for an automated machine, would be a very useful addition to existing machines. This report details U.S. Bureau of Mines development of a generic procedure for synthesizing diagnostic systems for electrical-control-circuit failures in mining machinery. A continuous mining machine is used as the testbed to illustrate the application of the developed methodology. Substantive differences among mining machine control circuits made it impossible to achieve a generic diagnostic system, but a generic approach for the synthesis of the diagnostic system was possible. As the research progressed, it became apparent that an algorithmic approach was better than an expert- system-based implementation. A prototype system was constructed and used to evaluate the diagnostic system. Prototype implementation issues are also examined.

The value of nonfuel raw mineral production in the United States for 1977 increased over that of 1976 by 5%, from $16.7 billion to $17.5 billion. Metals declined by 5% from $6.1 billion to $5.8 billion, chiefly because of strikes in the iron ore industry and a depressed copper market. Subsidization of mining industries in some foreign countries accounted in part for the excess of copper and some other metals on world markets. Weak metal markets and continued slowdowns in the world economy were the main reasons of the virtual absence of new mine projects. Increasing domestic governmental involvement affecting mineral industry activities, such as pricing controls, public land withdrawals, and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, effective August 3, continued to be controversial and to be criticized by various segments of the industry.

Under its organic act the Federal Bureau of Mines is directed to conduct investigations relating to the improvement of health conditions in the mineral industries. This report describes the lead and zino deposits and the mining methods employed in the sheet-ground area of the Joplin district, Missouri, and discusses the causes and the methods of abating rock dust in the mines, the chemical and physical characteristics of the dust, and the quantities present in mine air. Although the preliminary investigation included a number of the "soft-ground" mines, the writer spent the larger part of his time in the sheet-ground mines, for in them alone was siliceous dust found in appreciable quantities. Some results of the preliminary investigation have been published by the Bureau of Mines in Technical Paper 105.a The territory covered in t~lCpreliminary investigation, during the period between November 7 and December 6, 1914, embraced parts of Jasper, Lawrence, Newton, and Greene Counties, Mo., and outlying districts in Kansas and Oklahoma. The remainder of the field work, to which 84 days during the period from February 9 to July 19, 1915, were devoted, was confined to the sheet-ground mines, the most important of which are situated in the vicinity of Joplin, Webb City, Carterville, and other smaller near-by towns in Jasper County, Mo.

Approach Water sprays are mounted along the sides of a continuous miner and behind the cutter head to help push ventilating air along the required path, and prevent its short circuiting. [During the past year the Metallurgical Fundamentals Section gave about an equal amount of time to the experimental determination of fundamental thermodynamic constants and to the demonstration of the application of such data to more directly practical metallurgical problems. The first division of the work - the actual experimental measurements of typical thermodynamic constants - was carried out an two problems, termed ?continuing? programs, namely, (1) measurements of Specific Heats at Low Temperatures and (2) Measurements of Heats of Formation and Free Energies. Specific substances chosen for investigation are classified as (n) those that have been the subject of requests for information from the industry and that, upon examination, seem of sufficient practical importance to justify study, and (b) compounds that are difficult to treat metallurgically, or whose specific thermodynamic properties have not yet been determined satisfactorily and for which accurate data might suggest improved or new methods of Metallurgical treatment, or (c) materials recognized as belonging to a social class with exceptional thermodynamic properties and, hence, of scientific as well as technical importance.]

This task report provides the process technology, preliminary design, capital and operating costs for a 25 TPD pilot plant to produce cell-grade alumina using a clay/hydrochloric acid extraction - HCI gas induced crystallization process. The report consists of six volumes: I - Process Technology and Costs; II and III - Equipment Lists, Specifications and Quotations; IV and V - General Specifications; VI - Drawings. The process was selected by the Bureau of Mines as the more promising method to produce cell-grade alumina from clay based on the results of the two previous task reports under this contract: Task I - Comparison of Six Processes (alunite, anorthosite-lime sinter, clay/sulfurous acid, clay/nitric acid, clay/hydrochloric acid evaporative and gas-induced crystallization) and Task 2 - Comparison of Two Processes (clay/nitric acid and clay/hydrochloric acid - gas induced (crystallization). The pilot plant process utilizes a unique dual crystallization process to produce aluminum-chloride-hexahydrate crystals having sufficient purity when decomposed to meet stringent alumina product specifications. The size of the 25 TPD pilot plant has been selected to permit scale-up to commercial size plants of equipment, technical and economic parameters. The capital cost estimate for the pilot plant, exclusive of fee and escalation, for a southeastern U.S. location is $52,311,000 expressed in 1979 dollars. The total time required to construct the pilot plant including engineering and procurement is 32 months. The operating cost to produce the estimated 9,000 tons of alumina required for testing in Hall cells is $40,91[0],190 expressed in 1979 dollars.

Southeastern reserves of titanium ores are large, widespread, and ample for anticipated demand. The leading titanium industries are mining and beneficiating sand deposits, principally in Florida, and manufacturing titanium pigments. Most of the mineral output is consumed by the producers themselves. In 1962, 20 percent of the national pigment capacity was in the Southeast.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Coouncil (CRC) 4/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 5/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. 5/ reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. 5/The present report presents analytical data for samples, representing the products of approximately 100 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during December 1)55 and January 194o. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows:Regular-price, 1,958 samples, 317 items, and 96 brands; premium-price, 1, samples, 292 items, and 85 brands; third-grade, 58 samples, 22 items, and 14 brands. "INTRODUCTION This paper is one of many reporting on various aspects of the Bureau of Mines program during World War II directed toward alleviation of shortages in certain critical minerals some of these papers are published as technical papers information circulars, and reports of investigations, of the Bureau of Mines or in technical journals.The investigation described in this report was begun as part of the Bureau, of Mines program to develop acid processes for the extraction of alumina from low-grade bauxites and clays. A domestic shortage of high-grade bauxite suitable for treatment by the Bayer process became acute as a result of World War II; and intensive search for a practical acid process using lower-grade alumina-bearing raw materials was therefore warranted.A survey of the various methods for extraction of alumina from clay has been presented in an early Bureau of Mines publication. 4/ The principal barrier to the successful operation of an acid process has been the difficulty experienced in developing a suitable commercial method for purifying the crude aluminum salts after the clay extraction is complete. Iron salts are the foremost contamination influence. A review of the more prominent procedures that have been proposed for separating iron and aluminum salts can be found in the well-known text on aluminum by Edwards, Frary, and Jeffries. 5/The majority of acid processes to extract alumina from clay employ sulfuric acid as the leaching agent, and the purification is thus reduced to the separation of iron and aluminum, sulfates."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the Sheep Creek prospect in the north-central Alaska Range to evaluate the Pb, Zn, Ag, and Sn resources. The studies included field investigations, mineralogical characterization, and concentration tests. Mineralization at Sheep Creek consists of disseminated, banded, and massive pyrite, sphalerite, and galena. Tin occurs as grains of cassiterite (Sn02) in the quartz-mica matrix and within pyrite and sphalerite grains, and Ag occurs in solid solution within the galena. Three bulk surface samples and two sets of core samples were collected at the Sheep Creek prospect for this study. Gravity concentration yielded products with up to 30 pct Sn, and the best result was a product that recovered 52 pct of the Sn at a grade of 22 pct Sn. Bulk sulfide flotation yielded products that recovered up to 89 pct of the Zn, 73 pct of the Pb, and 75 pct of the Ag, but grades were relatively low; selective flotation would significantly increase the grades.
