Most of automotive magnesium applications are presently produced by high-pressure die casting processes, For further expansion of the alloy usage in automobiles, novel-manufacturing processes needs to be developed, In this study, squeeze casting of AM50 alloy was carried out using a hydraulic press with an applied pressure of 70 MPa, Tensile properties and fracture behavior of the squeeze-cast AM50 were characterized in comparison with the die cast counterpart, The squeeze-cast AM50 alloy exhibits virtually no porosity in the microstructure evaluated by optical microscopy, The results of tensile testing indicate that the improved tensile properties for the squeeze-cast samples over the conventional high-pressure die-cast parts, The analysis of tensile behavior shows that the strain-hardening rate during the plastic deformation of the squeeze-cast specimens is constantly higher than that of the die-cast specimens. The SEM fractography evidently reveals the ductile fracture features of the squeeze-cast alloy AM50.

"Economic Mn-oxide ore deposits of commercial grade occur in the Rhodope massif near Kato Nevrokopi in the Drama region, Northern Greece. The Mn-oxide mineralization has developed by weathering of continental hypogene rhodochrosite-sulphide veins. The vein mineralization is con-?ned by tectonic shear zones between marble and metapelites, extending laterally into the marble astabular, pod or lenticular oreshoots (up to 50 m x 20 m x 5-10 m). Supergene oxidation of the hypogene mineralization led to the formation of in-situ residual Mn-oxide ore deposits, and secondary infills of Mn-oxide ore in embryonic and well developed karst cavities.Whole rock geochemical pro?les across mineralized zones con?rm the role of thrusts and faults as solution passageways and stress the importance of these structures in the development of hydrothermal and supergene mineralization at Kato Nevrokopi. Three zones are recognized in the in-situ supergene veins: (A) a stable zone of oxidation, where immobile elements form (or substitute in) stable oxide mineral phases, and mobile elements are leached; (B) a transitional (active) zone in which element behavior is strongly in?uenced by seasonal ?uctuations of the groundwater table and variations in pH-Eh conditions; and (C) a zone of permanent ?ooding, where variations in pH-Eh conditions are minimal. Zone (B) is considered as the source zone for the karst cavity mineralization. During weathering, meteoric waters, which were CO2-rich (PCO2~10-3.8 to 10-1.4) and oxygenated (fO2~10-17 for malachite), percolated downward within the veins, causing breakdown and dissolution of sul?des and marble, and oxidation of rhodochrosite to Mn-oxides. Karst cavity formation was favored by the high permeability along thrust zones. Dissolved Mn2+was transportedinto karst cavities in reduced meteoric waters at the beginning of weathering (pH~4-5), and as Mn(HCO3)2in slightly alkaline groundwaters during advanced weathering (pH~6-8). Mn4+-oxide precipitation took place by fO2increase in ground waters, or pH increase by continuous hydrolysis and carbonate dissolution. In the well developed karst setting, some mobility of elements occurred during and after karst ore formation in the order Na>K>Mg>Sr>Mn>As>Zn>Ba>Al>Fe>Cu>Cd>Pb."

F OR many years, only one grade of structural steel has been used in volume in Canada. Its characteristics have not been altered appreciably and its long use speaks well for its performance. This standard grade of structural steel may be bought and specified as C.S.A. G40.4 steel or the American equivalent, A.S.T.M. A7. The principal limitations and requirements of this specification are shown in Table I. Within the last five years there has been a growing awareness among the steel producers and steel fabricators that economic forces are at work which make desirable the availability of new and better grades of structural steel. Competition from other materials has increased. The use of concrete bridges and pre-stressed concrete beams is a prime example. "This paper describes the distribution, occurrence, and paragenesis of known sulphide deposits within an area bounded by longitudes 102°00' to 106°00' west and latitudes 54 ° 301 to 57 °00 1 north. The Precambrian bed-rock which outcrops over all but the southern fringe of the area con- . sists of regional metamorphic assemblages ranging from low grade or green schist facies to high grade or amphibolite-granulite facies. The areas . of low-grade metamorphism correspond to 'islands' of volcanic rocks which are surrounded by highgrade paragneisses and migmatites. Intrusive rocks range in composition from ultrabasic to granitic and may be divided into syntectonic and posttectonic sequences. The average composition of the former is granodiorite and of the latter quartz diorite.The massive sulphide deposits fall naturally on basis of mineral content into the following divisions: ( 1) pyrrhotite and / or pyrite, (2) sphalerite and/ or chalcopyrite plus iron sulphides, (3) sphalerite and galena, ( 4) sulphide-bearing pegmatite, and (5) nickeliferous pyrrhotite and / or chalcopyrite. The deposits of iron sulphides are ubiquitous. Ratio of pyrrhotite to pyrite is fairly constant for individual deposits, but their areal distribution appears to be independent of the nature of the enclosing rock and grade of regional metamorphism. All deposits containing ore-grade quantities of base metals have been concentrated at favourable structural locations. Copper-zinc and lead-zinc deposits appear to be associated with syntectonic granodiorite with the lead-zinc concentrations confined to calc-silicate gneisses. Copper-nickel deposits show a close relationship to post-tectonic gabbros and pyroxenites. The paragenesis is more or less the same for the majority of deposits, with iron sulphides and sphalerite being introduced early and followed by chalcopyrite and galena. Some vertical and / or horizontal zoning is apparent in a few deposits. Temperatures of formation and origin of the deposits are briefly discussed."

Introduction This paper is prepared from data gathered for a similar paper to be submitted to the United States Bureau of Mines, for publication as one of their information circulars. It covers the history and development of the present milling practice at Premier. The authors wish to acknowledge the assistance and suggestions given during the preparation of this paper by D. L. Pitt, Manager of the Premier Gold Mining Company, Limited; also their indebtedness to various members of the Engineering Staff and of the Accounting Department who have assisted materially in gathering the data used. Location The Premier mine and mill are situated in northern British Columbia, approximately fifteen miles north of the head of Portland canal, in the Salmon River section, about half a mile east of the Alaska-British Columbia boundary line where it crosses die Salmon river. The mill is located on a rather steep hillside on the horizon of the main haulage level of the mine, and is within a hundred feet of the mouth of the tunnel. Both the mine and mill are connected with tidewater at Stewart, B.C., by an aerial tramway (1) eleven and one-half miles in length, which delivers both ore and concentrate to the bunkers at the dock for shipment to the smelters. All mine and mill supplies are transported from Stewart dock to Premier over this tramway, except heavy machinery. Heavy pieces have to be hauled either by truck in summer or sleighs in winter over a good road which runs from Stewart dock to Premier.

Uranium minerals are often associated with iron minerals, and during the hydrometallurgical processing of the uranium ores, iron plays several significant roles. The presence of Fe(III) in solution promotes the oxidative acid leaching for the recovery of uranium. The control of the distribution of impurities in milling and refining is also affected by dissolved iron. When rejected from the process streams, iron usually collects other impurities and contributes to the stabilization of the wastes for final disposal. These roles of iron, as they relate to current uranium processing operations, are discussed in detail, and some broad and historical perspectives are also presented.

"The Eastern Abitibi Sub province (Quebec segment), contains two main types of gold deposits: the common quartz-vein type and the rare pyritic type. Both occur in areas dominated by volcanic rocks and are spatially associated with major fault zones.Quartz-vein gold deposits consist of simple to complex networks of quartz-carbonate-pyrite veins in reverse shear zones and extensional fractures. They occur in areas dominated by mafic volcanic rocks and are commonly associated with small syn- to late-tectonic porphyritic felsic intrusions. Associated alteration, which postdates peak metamorphism, is dominated by carbonatization, sericitization and pyritization of the wallrocks. These deposits formed late in the geologicalevolution of the Abitibi.Pyritic gold deposits range from deformed massive sulphide lenses to zones of syntectonic pyrite-rich veinlets and associated pyrite disseminations. These deposits occur in environments dominated by felsic volcanic rocks that are typically converted to sericite schists near the deposits. The associated pre-metamorphic aluminous alteration is now characterized by metamorphic sericite, andalusite, kyanite and chloritoid, overprinted by a late retrogression of alumino- silicates. These deposits probably represent deformed volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, but the timing of gold introduction in these is not fully understood.The differences in geological attributes reflect significant differences in the genesis these deposits: the pyritic deposits probably have a multistage genesis, including a pre-tectonic stage, in contrast to a single stage late-tectonic genesis for the quartz-vein deposits.RESUMELa partie Est de la Sous-Province de l’Abitibi( segment québécois) renferme deux types de gites d' or: ceux de type ""veine de quartz"" et ceux, plus rares, de type ""pyriteux"". THE EXCUSE for producing still another paper dealing with the oilfields of the Middle East is the overwhelming importance of this area to everyone, both inside and out of the oil industry. Figure 1 shows the area defined as the Middle East for the purpose of this paper. No description of what constitutes the Middle East is generally acceptable to everyone and, in fact, in many parts of the world it is referred to as "Western Asia". At the time ?the writer went to work as a geologist in the Middle East -this was in 1926 -there were just three known oilfields, namely, Hurghada in Egypt, Naft Khaneh in the Transferred Territories of Iraq, and Masjid-i-Sulai-man in Persia. Their combined producing rate at that time was around 100,000 barrels per day. Toda y, just thirty years later, some forty-two fields have been proven to exist, and a recent discovery in Syria -if commercial -may add one more to the list. Producing rates at the end of last year ( 1956) were approaching four million barrels per day. This sizable figure re presents nearly 23 per cent of the total Free World's production. What is more important still, something over 70 per cent of the Free World's proven oil reserves are known to exist in the subsoil of the Middle East.

"IntroductionIN THE preceding paper we have learned about Canada's resources of metallurgical coal. There is an adequate amount in Nova Scotia, a very large reserve on the eastern flank of the Rocky mountains, and a strictly limited supply on the Pacific coast. Added to these is an unknown quantity of coking coal in the Peace River district, at present rather isolated but possibly capable of industrial development in the future.The chief use of metallurgical coal is to make iron and steel. For this, an adequate supply of iron ore is required. So we should now scan the Canadian supply of iron ore, the possibility of its increasing use at home, and the probable markets abroad.Trade in iron ore tends to be international, as is the case with many other raw materials. The present tendency with iron and steel, in contrast, is to keep its manufacture within national boundaries, and there is no evidence that this will change much in the years to come. We should keep these two points clearly in mind when considering the disposal of iron ore from Canadian mines. We should remember, also, that the modern blast furnace and steel plant has such a large output that a correspondingly large population, reasonably compact, is needed to consume its products.Large Ore Supply in East, Small in WestCanada has now four major iron ore fields, well situated to serve adequately the eastern half of the country. Wabana .and Labrador are well placed to serve overseas markets and plants on the eastern seaboard and eastern interior of the United States and Canada."

High production rate and good stability demand the optimization of all phases of electric pig iron smelting. This is important with respect to slag chemistry, which to a large extent regulates the process temperature in electric smelting. Controlled basicity and slag volume. and a satisfactory screen analysis of the reduction material and sinter, are of the utmost importance for smooth furnace operation. Large variations in slag volume and in B/ A and C/Fe ratio will have an influence on the furnace resistance and thus the specific energy development in the furnace, which lead to variable reduction of SiO.. The result will be variable hot -metal quality and un-stable furnace operation.

This paper comprises a general outline of all of the developments, including the history, geology, mining, milling, power and transportation installations, at the gold mining operation of La Luz Mines Limited and the copper mining operation of its wholly-owned subsidiary, Rosita Mines Limited, both located in north-central Nicaragua. The low-grade, gold-bearing ore-bodies of La Luz Mines, contained in highly fractured and folded Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, were from 1909 to 1928, mined and treated by primitive methods by the La Luz and Los Angeles Mining Company. The abandoned property was acquired by La Luz Mines Limited in 1936, and was equipped with modern machinery and put into production in 1939. Between 1939 and 1948, the daily rate of production was in-creased from 300 tons per day to 2,-000 ton per day. The ore reserves available for open-pit mining were depleted in 1954. Since then, the entire production has come from under-ground operations.

"The repacked mineral aggregates of good grade oil sands have permeabilities ranging between 15 darcys to 350 millidarcys. The variation is due to the silt contents of the aggregates. Few good grade oil sands contain as much as 30 per cent •silt, most of them contain less than 20 per cent, and a large proportion have less than 10 per cent.The permeabilities of repacked good grade oil sands (oil included) depend on the degree of liquid saturation. When saturation with oil plus water reaches between 80-90 per cent, permeability is reduced to zero. As total saturation decreases below 80 per cent, permeability increases ranidly. Permeabilities of between one and two darcys were observed for total saturations between 60-70 per cent.The mean value for 18 measurements of the permeabilities of ""undisturbed"" core samples of good grade oil sands was 50 millidarcys. This value is •probably too high. The mean value for 20 measurements on core samples of interbedded oil sand and shale was 100 millidarcys. The mean value for 11 measurements on shale was 10 millidarcys."

Introduction The pages that follow present a brief chronological survey of views which have been held, and of legislation enacted, for the regulation of the natural gas and oil industry in the Turner Valley field, especially as regards conservation of the natural gas. To provide a necessary background for an adequate understanding of the progress of events in western Canada, there is included also a compilation, from technical and legal authorities, of some of the more important measures which have been adopted for the regulation of the oil and gas fields of the United States, where these measures have had, or are likely to have, a bearing on the course of our domestic industry. Owing to exigencies of space, it has been possible to refer only to the most outstanding proposals and legislation, and to these in the briefest possible form. Although, so far as Canada is concerned, the data presented are restricted almost entirely to the Turner Valley field, it is the hope of the writer that the paper may prove of value for purposes of reference: for any similar gas and oil fields discovered in western Canada will certainly revive and intensify the problem of the proper steps to be taken for the conservation of the gas. Definition of 'Conservation The term conservation has been so misunderstood and misrepresented that, to many persons in Alberta, it means little more than closing-in wells. In the light of the definition of Charles E. Hughes, that 'True conservation of a raw material is its economical use', the subject of natural gas conservation is inseparably involved with the study of the function of the -gas and with the development of the principles of unit operation.

T HE APPROACH to maintenance must always be ?completely positive: there must be no question of putting off difficult problems until it is more convenient to tackle them. By this it is meant that a piece of machinery or equipment which, by experience, is known to be due for a check should not, merely because it appears to be operating satisfactorily, be left until it reaches a critical .condition and breaks down. The mentality of the Maintenance Manager must be completely orderly and methodical and he should, in fact, possess a ledger-book mind, having a debit and credit outlook. The debit side would be that applying to time out of service, cost in wages, material, personnel involved, etc., and the credit side that relating to continuous operational time of the locomotive and therefore to the ultimate benefit of the mine and the personnel who work there. The Maintenance Manager is not concerned with design problems, and although he and the personnel under his jurisdiction are not engaged in productive work, he and his staff do, nevertheless, add greatly to or detract from the overall efficiency of the organization. Provided the machinery placed in his care is good to start with, he must take the best steps he possibly can to keep it running. However, he may, on occasion, be forced to improvise and this is where the ingenuity of a clever man rises to the occasion.

Energy benchmarking is widely applied across industries to determine the potential to improve energy performance. Unlike the many technologies for which energy benchmarks and efficiency rating systems are already in maturity, benchmarking of mining processes is still in its infancy. Benchmarking energy usage in mining operations, where energy costs are high and represent a significant portion of overall operating expenses, is challenging due to the uniqueness of each mining operation. Mines vary in terms of geology, geographic setting, ore body geometry, mineralogy which impact the mining method, material handling, processing and waste management. In order to gauge the opportunity for reducing the energy intensity of individual operations and also to compare the energy performance of operations on a global scale, the deployment of new benchmarking methodologies, models and frameworks is necessary. As a step towards the establishment of an accurate framework for benchmarking the energy consumption of mining operations, comminution, one of the more energy intensive mining sub-processes, was selected as the focus of a new energy benchmarking method. The methodologies and processes used to onset fragmentation in a rock mass to the crushing or grinding of rock to a size that is suitable for economic extraction are predominantly dependent on the ore properties. For this reason, site specific factors, such as the size reduction requirements and ore hardness were included in an energy benchmark model so that the energy performance of comminution processes at different operations could be normalized and compared on a global scale. Single particle compression breakage has been identified by several prominent researchers in the field of comminution as the upper limit of energy utilization in size reduction processes. For this reason single particle compression breakage was proposed as the basis of a work index for ores to be used as an input for the benchmark model. Overall, the new method showed that the energy benchmark for mineral comminution can be normalized and subsequently compared for a range of mining operations once the ore hardness has been appropriately characterized.

Magnesium alloy, being the lightest structural material, is a key candidate for the weight reduction of vehicles in automotive and aerospace industries; however, its poor corrosion resistance and difficulty in deformation are limiting factors. Recently, Al/Mg/Al tri-layered clad sheets have been considered as a promising alternative to improve corrosion resistance and formability of magnesium alloys. The aim of this study was to evaluate the tensile properties and deformation behavior of Al/Mg/Al tri-layer clad sheets at different temperatures and strain rates. Yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and elongation were observed to increase with increasing strain rate. With increasing temperature from -40°C to 180°C, YS and UTS decreased and ductility increased. The strain hardening exponent evaluated via three equations of Hollomon, Swift, and Afrin et al. showed a similar increase with increasing strain rate and decreasing temperature. The fractographic analysis showed partial debonding of clad interface especially at higher strain rates and lower temperatures.

Tin-mining activities have taken place in the region of the German Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) for over hundreds of years up until 1991. For long times, gravity separation processes used to be the dominating beneficiation approach in those mining districts to recover cassiterite, the main tin-bearing mineral. For fine (< 100 µm) and very fine (< 20 µm) particles these approaches might not represent effective techniques, significant valuable materials could not be recovered and reported to tailings, where it was subsequently disposed. Thus, there are substantial amounts of cassiterite still present in these tailings disposals, most of it as very fine particles with already high degrees of liberation. That fact brings these tailings disposals into focus for potential reprocessing using beneficiation approaches, which are more sensitive to fine and very fine particles. In this paper we present results concerning the laboratory-scale treatment of material from exemplary heaps of the former Altenberg and Ehrenfriedersdorf mining sites using various flotation methods (including conventional froth flotation and oil-assisted flotation). Different size ranges of the material were previously prepared in order to investigate their response to the different techniques. For the study, special emphasis is put on agglomeration flotation, an oil-assisted flotation method. Therefore, an aliphatic oil phase of alkane basis is used to either selectively aggregate or collect the cassiterite particles. Recovery and flotation performance results are presented with respect to different process parameters: various collectors (including sulphosuccinamates and phosphonic acids) and depressants (including sodium fluorosilicate and oxalic acid) regime, oil dosage, agitation time and pulp density during oil/pulp agitation. Furthermore, the oil/particle aggregation behavior is analyzed via particle image analysis and, additionally, collector adsorption characteristics are investigated by contact angle measurements and zeta potential analysis. The data obtained is correlated with the testwork results achieved in order to interpret the flotation response of very fine cassiterite particles.
