ALUMINUM powder is a well-known article of commerce and in various forms has been marketed widely for use in paint, for pyrotechnic purposes and for exothermic mixtures. For a number of reasons, how- ever, aluminum powder has not been employed extensively in powder metallurgy, although a great many proposals along this line have been offered. Aluminum and aluminum-alloy powders oxidize readily upon exposure to air and the thin film of oxide (or hydroxide) thus formed is highly refractory, in that ordinary gaseous reducing agents such as hydrogen or carbon monoxide do not reduce the oxide to metal at temperatures below the melting point of aluminum. It has been thought that the presence of these films of oxide on aluminum particles would interfere markedly in powder metallurgical work and a number of suggestions have been made, either for preventing the formation of the film through the production of the powders in inert or reducing atmospheres, or for the removal of the oxide by means of powerful reducing agents, including "nascent" or atomic hydrogen released from metal hydrides. 4 second and more serious difficulty in the use of aluminum and aluminum-alloy powders in powder metallurgy resides in the fact that during compression such powders tend to adhere or cold-weld to the die walls, thus interfering with the formation and ejection of a compact. A third difficulty, which has been encountered only with aluminum-alloy powders, is their hardness when compared with elemental aluminum. Certain of these powders are susceptible to age- hardening, which further hinders the formation of strong green compacts. These conditions are particularly true of atomized aluminum-alloy powders. Even in the annealed condition, plastic deformation of alloy powders under pressure is low when compared with unalloyed powders. This fact, coupled with the lower corrosion resistance of the alloy powders, is probably the significant factor in our failure to obtain strong sintered pieces. METHODS OF PRODUCING THE POWER Many methods have been proposed for manufacture of aluminum powder, only a few of which are used commercially. Several of the more important processes include: (I) atomization of the molten metal; (2) mechanical pulverization and other types of comminution; and (3) graining, in which molten aluminum is stirred during freezing. For pigment and certain pyrotechnic uses aluminum flake powder is desirable, because of its greater proportion of surface to volume; and large quantities of such material are made by a procedure that involves stamping or ball milling. OPERATION of a modern steel plant presents a curious anomaly. Large-scale operations, in which large volumes or heavy weights of materials are involved, are not usually subject to close control or narrow specifications. On the other hand, operations that call for a high degree of precision are usually carried out under carefully controlled conditions with delicate, precise machinery and tools, and production is made secondary to quality. In a modern steel mill both extremes are taken as a matter of course. A strip mill making auto-body sheets must supply its customers with sheets that all come within a tolerance of plus or minus 0.003 in. in gauge at any point from side to side or end to end, and without blemishes either of color or surface. Sheets that were considered par excellence as recently as ten years ago could not even find a market today. Such exacting requirements have made necessary a nicety of control that approaches the watchmaker's art. Notwithstanding this necessity for precision, the scale of operation is stupendous.

I. INTRODUCTION. THIS old and once famous district played, through its enormous production of silver and gold, an important part in the history of the State of San Luis Potosi. According to a pamphlet prepared under the direction of the Governor of the State, Sr. Don Blas Escontria, and presented to the visiting members of the Institute during the Mexican meeting of 1901, this district is situated 20 km. east of the city of San Luis Potosi, in a range of mountains of moderate height, extending 135 km. N. and S., and 16 km. E. and W.; and the mineralized area hitherto developed is about 600,000 sq. m. The history of the district,. as given by the record dated 1778, and formerly kept in the San Francisco convent, says that it was discovered in 1575 by Sr. Don Pedro Irarte, and adds that the city of San Luis Rey de Francisco del Potosi received its name (in allusion to the famous Potosi mines in Bolivia) by reason of the remarkable productiveness of its gold- and silver-mines in the first period of their exploration, during which they paid to the Crown, as " quintos " (the fifth part of the product), $97,000,000, as appears from the accounts of the royal treasury. The amount of the quientos paid during the " bonanza period " of 80 years was $72,000,000. The larger sum first mentioned probably represents a longer series of years. But either will suffice to indicate the great wealth of the mines. The object of this work was to obtain and correlate information on effect of internal stress in variously drawn tubes on several properties. Also, a simple approximate method of comparing types of stress distribution in such variously drawn tubes was sought. There is also included some work on comparison of single and polycrystalline materials and effect of different types of operation and preferred orientation. Preparation of Material A series of tubes was drawn to study the effect of the type and degree of final reduction on various physical properties and the approximate distribution of stress intensity across the tube wall. The material used all came from a single heat of 70-30 brass melted in a regular production Ajax-Wyatt induction furnace. The analysis of the metal as cast was: copper, 70.36 per cent; lead, 0.04; iron, 0.02; zinc, balance. The material was cast in "shells" with 4 in. outside diameter and in. wall thickness. It was drawn part way down according to the usual standard mill schedule and then by suitable individual schedules to finish by a variety of types and degrees of drawing to the same final cases in every instance; namely, 0.750 in. outside diameter by 0.080 in. wall thickness. The exact final draws, together with the percentage area reductions, diameter reductions and gage reductions are given in Table 1. In fabricating these tubes, rather unusual precautions were observed to insure the elimination of ail variables not under immediate study. All intermediate anneals were carried out at about 1200" F. down to the so-called "cut-in size"; namely, 17/16 by 3/16 in. From this point on, all anneals were made at from 1050' to 1100" F. The greatest care was used all through to have the tubes as free from minor surface defects as possible. When such defects were visible on intermediate sizes they were carefully filed out. On the final draw to 3/4-in diameter the die was aligned with the greatest possible precision in order to insure as straight a tube as possible

Zinc mining at Jefferson City began in 1854 with small scale production of oxidized ore from open pits. Significant production began in 1913 with the development of the Mascot Mine by the American Zinc Company. In 1965, four flotation mills were treating crude ore at the rate of about 12,000 tons per day and the Mascot-Jefferson City district currently is the largest zinc producing area in the United States. The producing mines, Mascot, Young, North Friends Station, New Market Zinc, Grasselli, Davis-Bible, Coy, and the Jefferson City, are 15 to 28 miles northeast of Knoxville in the Valley and Ridge physiographic province, an area of gentle relief lying between the more rugged Great Smoky Mountains and the Cumberland escarpment. The ore is strata bound, occurring essentially within a stratigraphic range of 200 feet in the Lower Kingsport and Upper Longview formations of Lower Ordovician age. In the lower strata of the mineralized section, the ore generally is found in coarsely crystalline elastic dolomite breccia containing silica and chert debris within a sequence of aphanitic limestones. The upper strata of the mineralized section are fine-grained primary dolomites that, in the ore zones, have been fragmented in mosaic patterns by solution collapse with the interfragmental space filled by white gangue dolomite and sphalerite. The mineralogy is unusually simple, sphalerite being the only important sulfide. Pyrite is very sparse. Dolomite gangue is abundant, silica was deposited in quite small amounts, calcite is minor, and fluorite and barite are very rare. The principal ore controlling structures are rubble breccia zones that were formed during the post-Lower Ordovician-pre-Middle Ordovician erosion interval by supergene solution as a phase of the development of a regional karst system of underground drainage that extended to' depths of at least 800 feet. The major Appalachian orogenic structures are post-ore and have been superimposed on the ore bodies. There is substantial evidence to support the current thinking of the writers that the ore deposits were formed at a depth not exc1~eding 800 feet.

THE need for improved mine communication to increase efficiency and to insure greater safety has long been recognized. General and unrestricted communication between all points underground, and between the surface and all points underground, is probably the least advanced phase of the mining industry. An ideal system of mine communication must require no fixed wire installations. The equipment must be small, lightweight, and readily portable, and the power requirements low. A system that can be used not only under normal circumstances but also in an emergency, when the continuity of wires, tracks, and pipelines may be disrupted, must function independently of any aid furnished by standard installations. Radio communication offers possibilities of meeting all the requirements necessary for an ideal communication system in underground mines. Transmission of signals must be achieved through one or both of two mediums, through the air in mine openings or through the strata. The results or lack of results obtained by early investigators showed conclusively that radio communication by space transmission cannot be accomplished effectively beyond line-of-sight distances in underground passageways. A radio system underground therefore must depend solely upon transmission through soil and strata. The application of radio to underground mine communication was investigated by many individuals and agencies at different times in the last several decades, but little success was achieved before World war 11.2-0, The results of experiments during the war, and further knowledge gained in experiments with vastly improved communication methods and equipment after the war provided the background for additional research in radio communication in underground mines. During 1950 to 1.952 the University of Minnesota sponsored an investigation to determine the possibility of developing: a system of radio communication universally applicable in underground metal mines in the Lake Superior district. The possibility of using radio equipment to determine the imminence of rock bursts in deep copper mines in that district also was investigated. The investigation supplemented previous and concurrent emergency mine communication studies of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Testing equipment and laboratory facilities maintained by the Bureau of Mines at Duluth, Minnesota, were used in the research program, which was conducted as a mining engineering graduate research problem by the present writer under the direction of T. L. Joseph and E. P. Pfleider. The radio units used in the research program were designed and built to specification solely to conduct tests of radio communication in mines. Two identical units were used in all tests. Each unit contained a transmitter section, a receiver section, and a power-supply section, mounted on a single chassis. The entire unit was enclosed in a single 10x12x18-in. metal case provided with a leather-strap handle for carrying purposes. The front of the case was hinged to open upward and provide easy access to the single control panel on which all controls were mounted. Storage batteries supplied the operating power for all tests. Standard 6-v automobile batteries were utilized to provide adequate capacity to conduct tests for a full day without exhausting the battery. A frequency range from 30 to 200 kc was covered in eight pre-fixed steps on each unit. The carrier frequencies were crystal-controlled and amplitude-modulated. The receiver employed an essentially standard superheterodyne circuit and was sufficiently sensitive to detect signal strengths of 5 micro v. A heterodyne circuit was employed in the transmitter to obtain the low-carrier frequencies used in the units. Power output of the transmitter, usually less than 2 w, rarely exceeded 3 w in any test. Tests were conducted in mines on the Vermillion iron range in Minnesota, the Gogebic iron range in Wisconsin, the Menominee and Marquette iron ranges in Michigan, and a copper mine in the upper Michigan peninsula. All tests were conducted when the mines were operating normally, and usual mining, maintenance, and transportation activities were in progress, so that any interference caused by normal production activities could be evaluated during the tests. Tests were made between different points underground in each mine, and between underground and surface points at some mines. Test readings obtained at any one mine were calibrated in the laboratory before another series of tests were begun at the next mine. The transmitter and receiver were separated by one or more levels in each test, and generally there was no other means of communication between test points. Two 100-ft lengths of rubber-covered wire were used for antenna wires on each unit in both transmission and reception. The ends of the wires were connected to ground points in one of several methods, depending upon physical conditions at each test site. The wires were clipped to metal rods about 200 ft apart in the back, side, or bottom of the mine opening where the character of the rock permitted driving rods. T HE Mining Methods Committee held its initial meeting* on Tuesday afternoon, with F. W. Bradley in the chair and W. Y. Westervelt as vice- chairman. The first paper to be presented was "A Plea for a U. S. Court of Patent Appeals," for which Kenneth W. Greenawalt ably pleaded. The paper (which was published in full in last month's issue) is so carefully prepared that no synopsis can do it justice. It discusses the opposed views of some patent lawyers and other lawyers and members of the judiciary as, for example, Chief Justice Taft who is quoted as saying in 1921: "I think it is a great deal better to take a first class lawyer and a first-class judge and make him a good patent expert than it is to take a patent expert and try to make him a first-class lawyer and a good judge." Mr. Greenawalt argued the need for specialized scientific and engineering interest and understanding to enable a lawyer or judge to prepare or interpret patent specifications and decide the originality necessary for a valid invention. He proposed the special U. S. Court of Patent Appeals to also counteract the costly confusion and injustice now ruling where a patent may be declared valid in the courts of certain States and invalid by the courts of other States.

A mass transfer coefficient for the removal of hydrogen from liquid aluminum by inert flush degassing has been determined experimentally at 700°C. A mathematical model has been derived, assuming transport control, which adequately describes the experimental data. The removal of hydrogen is shown to increase with decreasing bubble size, and with increasing flow of flushing gas. The presence of hydrogen in liquid metals in amounts which exceed the solid solubility at one atmosphere hydrogen pressure is highly undesirable, causing unsound ingots or castings, or resulting in difficulties during further fabrication. The removal of hydrogen from liquid metals can be accomplished by several methods, the principal two being vacuum treating and inert flush degassing. The design of a process involving either of these techniques is based on the mass transfer coefficient for hydrogen between the liquid metal and a hydrogen-dilute gas phase. In an effort to extend our knowledge in this area, an investigation of the rate of removal of hydrogen from liquid metals by inert gas flushing was undertaken. In view of the difficulties encountered with gas porosity in the casting of aluminum and aluminum alloys, and because of certain experimental advantages, liquid aluminum was selected for the study. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS The removal of gases from liquid metals, particularly steel, has received considerable attention in recent years, The first definitive work of a theoretical nature was presented by Geller1 who considered the case where equilibrium exists between purging gases and metal bath during flushing, and also deviations from this ideal case. Hulme2 has surveyed a number of experimental studies and discussed some of the practical limitations of removing dissolved gases from molten metals. More recently a number of studies have been reported on degassing of steel melts by flushing with an inert gas.3'4 Considerable work has also been reported on aqueous and organic liquid-gas systems, and an excellent summary prepared by Hovis.5 The treatment of liquid aluminum by a flushing gas to remove dissolved hydrogen has been known for several decades.6 A number of gases have been used for this purpose, including nitrogen, argon, and chlorine, or mixtures of these gases. Tikkanen and Erkko7 have studied the relative density changes of aluminum castings poured from melts degassed with chlorine, nitrogen, and mixtures of the two gases. Their

I. INTRODUCTION. THE central power-station. of the De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., was designed and built under my supervision about five years ago. Since no detailed description of this plant has ever appeared, it may possess sufficient interest to warrant its publication, even at this late date. Although some additions may have been Blade to the plant, the following account, prepared from my notes, and accurate up to May, 1905 (at which time I severed my connection with the De Beers Com¬pany), will, I think, be found substantially correct. Certain local conditions governing the design of this plant should be stated first. If. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS. The climate is hot and dry. The .region around Kimberley is arid and water is very scarce. The supply obtained from the mines contains so much material in solution that it is unfit for use in boilers or condensers (although tests recently made with a water-softening plant, built by Hans Reisert, of Germany, would indicate that water thus treated is suitable for boilers). And the amount of water required for concentrating about 30,000 tons of ore per day is so large that the question of adequate water-supply for this power-station had to be carefully considered. The rainy season extends from December to April, and the rainfall averages about 15 in. per year. Droughts are frequent; and in some years there is scarcely any rain at all. The water-supply for the town of Kimberley is brought from the Vaal river, 16 miles distant, and pumped into town by a private water company. The charge made for water, which is

HIS many admirers regard the "official"' candidate for president of the Institute in 1934 as far above the average in ability and capacity; but perhaps his outstanding characteristic is dependability. Some men of great brilliance succeed indifferently because they cannot be relied upon. When Howard Nichols Eavenson undertakes to do something he either does it, or he proves to his own satisfaction that the particular object is not attainable. And the latter outcome is exceptional because his judgment is so good that he generally foresees the impossibility and selects in advance a practical alternative. Though a tireless worker he is pretty sure that his energy is not spent futilely.

THE committee in charge of arrangements for the meeting of the Institute in September has com-pleted its program. The headquarters of the meeting will be at the Palace Hotel, San Francisco, and the registration committee will be at the hotel all day on Sunday, Sept. 24, and from 8 a.m. until noon on Monday. On Sunday afternoon, automobiles will be available for sightseeing trips around the city. Monday will be devoted to technical sessions. In the morning, there will be sessions on Mining and on Iron and Steel; in the afternoon, sessions on Mining and Milling. At these sessions, in addition to the papers mentioned in the tentative list printed in August, there will be presented three papers on the geology, mining and milling of the Comstock lode; one on the Aztec mine, Baldy, N. M.; one on the Colombian oil fields; and one on charcoal precipitation of cyanide solutions. The luncheon on that day will be Dutch Treat, for men only, at the Engineers Club. On Monday evening, there will be an informal buffet supper at the home of F. W. Bradley. On Tuesday morning, a party of 50 men will leave for Hetch Hetchy. During the four days of the trip, the party will see the Priest tunnel and earth dam under construction by steam-shovel and hydraulic-fill methods, the Big Creek shaft and tunnel, early intake power plant and tunnels and the Hetch Hetchy dam under construction. For those who remain in San Francisco, Tuesday will be "San Francisco Day." There will be motor trips to the Presidio, Cliff House, Golden Gate Park, and other points of interest, and shopping trips to Chinatown. On Wednesday, "University of California Day," the party will be guided through the university by members of the Mining Association, the affiliated stu-dent society, and will see the Greak Theatre and not-able buildings. Thursday will be "Leland Standford, Jr. University Day." Automobiles will leave the Palace Hotel at 10 a.m., and will return from the university at 4.30 p.m. Friday has been reserved for trips to the Selby Smelter, to Mt. Tamalpais, or to other points of interest. Arrangements will be made to visit the mines or gold dredges in California, if members desire to do so, but such trips must of necessity be considered special trips and arrangements will have to be made to suit the convenience of the individual or party. The Golf Committee will make arrangements for those who wish to play golf.

FROM almost every point of view, petroleum was "strategic mineral number one" during the World War that ended in 1945. Even the spectacular advent of the atomic bomb in the final days of the conflict did not displace it from its position of prime importance, although within a few years uranium will almost certainly be the "number one" material in the minds of military strategists, if it is not even now in that position. But both as fuel and as raw material for chemical industries, petroleum will hold the center of the stage for many years to come. Hardly any other substance illustrates so fully the manner in which science and technology may be combined to achieve the utmost success in contributing to human efficiency and comfort. Mining men, quite as exploration minded as petroleum interests, are in the position where most of the exposed crustal portions of the earth have been examined, where the demand for metals is high and likely to continue so, and yet where, perhaps, the tools fail for the economic exploration of many of the possible mineral areas more deeply covered with drift, alluvium, and later formations. At the same time the incentive exists to create acceptable substitutes for many of the duties of metal. The problem of the economic exploration of possible mineral-bearing areas is hence a vital one. In oil exploration, the absence of surface or shallow occurrences and the high cost of test drilling has led to the intensive study of geophysical techniques. Hence the development of the seismic method with its high certainty factor and its adaptability to standardized procedure.

Permian salt measures carry extensive lenses of soluble potash salts in north central Germany. Potash deposits of Oligocene age are found in the Upper Rhine Graben of Alsace (France), and in the Catalonian Basin of Spain. These deposits are found in a wide range of structural settings. Reserves are large, and the production of potash salts is an important phase in the economy of each of these countries.

ANNUAL or necessary inspections and investigations of coal mines for various purposes were made possible through the Federal Coal Mine Inspection Act of May 7, 1941, which authorized entry to the Secretary of the Interior through the Bureau of Mines. Primary object of these inspections is to obtain information pertaining to health and safety conditions. Among the purposes for which the data are to be used, are annual reports to Congress, the publication of inspection reports, and the compilation and publication of statistics. The act states that inspections and investigations shall be made by employees of the Bureau of Mines, who shall co-operate with other bureaus of the U. S. Department of the Interior, as well as with the official mine-inspection, safety cr health agencies of the several states and territories. WHEN we want to interpret some problem which faces us at the present, if that problem be a social or political movement, we turn to the pages of history for 'information. If the problem be one of science or of industry we turn to the library of the subject and endeavor to translate the present from the experience of the past. I wonder if you would bear with me for a few minutes as I look back to the time when I was going through mining school and looking forward with hope, it is true and with confidence also, but still with some trepidation and an occasional qualm, to the month of June when the class of 1897 would be hunting jobs. Those were the years 1893 to 1897. Those years saw the Treasury of the United States so empty of gold that the President had to appeal to financiers to accept the country's promises to pay in return for $100,000,000 in gold. And the invectives that were hurled at both their heads for such a betrayal of the people sound strangely similar to those you read today being daily written and screamed at another President for taking us into the League of Nations or for not issuing bonds in huge amounts for unemployment relief, or for not adopting somebody else's particular specific for the relief of hard times.

LECTURE, it appears, is a discourse that is supposed to be instructive. I am quite sure that you will derive no instruction from what I have to say. I will be satisfied if my remarks provoke thought along one or two mental paths that have not been traveled so fre¬quently as to be devoid of interest. I have no particular message apropos of professional engineers or professional engineering, and any conclusions that I may seem to reach will be purely tentative and incidental. Probably at times you have wondered, in a casual way at least, why so many people who are not, never have been, and never will be engineers, want to use the title. For example, I recently received a communication from a life insurance broker or salesman, whose chaste letterhead bore the legend "Estate Engineer." He was perfectly serious about it, as is also the expert accountant who assumes the imposing name of cost-analysis engineer. Dozens of equally amazing titles might be cited. Then there is that class of individuals who have been engineers, in the true sense of the word; who have gone into some other kind of occupation; but who cling tenaciously to the name engineer, usually prefixing some word or other which at once gives them away by telling what their work really is.
