Heat content and entropy data at high temperatures were obtained for cuprous oxide (Cu2O) and cupric oxide (CuO). Experimental results and smooth values are reported. Equations are given for heat content increments and heat capacities above 2980 K. Low-temperature heat capacity data were obtained for cuprous oxide. Evaluation of the 2980 K entropy gave, S°298.15(Cu2O) = 22.08 ± 0.10 cal/deg mole. Heat of formation values were determined for cuprous and cupric oxides. The values are: AH°298.15(Cu2O) = -40,830 ± 300 cal/mole, and AH°298.15(CuO) = -37,230 ± 150 cal/mole.

This Bureau of Mines report reviews in detail the foundry coke situation in the United States in 1975. It discusses intrinsic production problems and identifies opportunities for modifying operating practices so that the quality and yield of foundry coke can be enhanced without unnecessary investment in new equipment. Major topics include operating data and attendant practices and problems, the relationship of carbonization phenomena to coke quality and yield, environ- mental impacts of foundry coke plant operations, suggested research and development opportunities, and data on components of oven charges and on foundry coke production and shipments.

The use of augered cast-in-place piles has seen tremendous growth under commerical structures in the past twenty years. Problems with vibration, soil densification and/or heave associated with driven piles do not occur with properly installed augered piles. Augered cast-in-place piles were originally constructed (1950s) with diameters of .31 m (12 in.) and lengths up to 6.1 m (20 ft); however with the advent of better drilling equipment, diameters varying from .41m(16 in.)to .61 m (24 in.) and typical depths ranging from 18.3 m (60 ft) to 24.4 m (80 ft) are achievable. Reinforcement may vary from a single high strength rebar (Grade 60) at the top of the pile to a continuous steel cage depending on loading (compression, tension-uplift, and lateral). Typical axial design loads (compression) for a single augered cast-in-place pile are in the 445 kN (50 tons) to 890 kN (100 tons) range.

We have developed a novel method - at the laboratory scale - comprising an ion-exchange separation and a membrane-electrolysis step for the purpose of zero-waste regeneration of spent HCl pickling liquors originating from hot-dip galvanizing of common steels. It is aimed at the parallel regeneration of HCl and iron. Experiments revealed that iron can be electrodeposited at high current efficiencies by maintaining the following conditions: 0.04-0.08 M HCl, 500-1000 A/m2, 20°C and stationary electrolyte in a conventional cell. Zinc in the solution did not disturb the deposition of iron, however it contaminated the product and it poisons the anion-exchange membrane required to tackle acidity during electrolysis. For a preliminary separation, anion-exchange tests were carried out to produce pure iron solutions. Beyond the equilibrium studies, column experiments were carried out showing that low flow rates of the loading solution and the ~1.5 M HCl eluent are essential for separation.

The new Cooper River Bridge will replace two existing bridges along U.S. Highway 17. The cable-stayed bridge will be one of the largest in the U.S and will connect the City of Charleston and the town of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The 1,546-foot long main span over Cooper River is supported by two diamond-shaped towers and will allow for 1000-foot wide navigation channel. The Charleston high-level approach is approximately 4351-foot long and will provide 250-foot wide navigation channel over Town Creek, while the Mount Pleasant high-level approach is 2090-foot long. Due to the high seismicity in the region, potential vessel impact, and hurricanes, large lateral loads are expected. Among various types of foundations, 10-foot diameter drilled shafts were selected for their high capacity against lateral loading. The shafts are founded on a stiff to very stiff lightly cemented calcareous sandy clay or sandy silt layer, called Cooper Marl, which underlies coastal sediments of interbedded clays and sands. The main towers will be supported on a group of 11 shafts and protected from ship collision by a rock island. The High Level Approach piers will be supported on a pair of 2 shafts. The shaft tip elevation is up to 230 feet below water line. An elaborate geotechnical investigation has been conducted on the site including a load test program on full-scale shafts under axial and lateral loads. The results of the tests were used to calibrate the lateral and axial soil resistance. The objective of this paper is to present the different aspects of the bridge foundation design.

In an underground mine operated with panel caving and subjected to high stresses, geotechnical events such as collapses or rock bursts are fairly recurrent. Both situations can involve risks for people, considerable production losses and increasing operational costs.This paper discusses an operational methodology for the recovery of the undercutting front carried out at El Teniente mine, which uses panel cave mining with post-undercutting, after the occurrence of severe damage due to a seismic cluster. The main objective of the recovery of the undercutting front is to prevent the spread of the collapse to the production level, risking the operational continuity. The methodology is the result of repairs that were carried out in the year 2014 at the North Reserves sector from El Teniente mine. Its characteristics are an undercutting front of almost 1000 m long, with the presence of relevant structures and faults, high stresses and high seismic activity.The practical implementation of the proposed methodology was successful since it prevented the spread of the damage, completely recovered the undercutting front and avoided production losses during the execution of the repairs. Also, considering the origin of the damage and the operations associated to the subsequent recovery of the undercutting front, in this paper we discuss the main control variables to be measured. These variables should allow any operator and short-term planner to take action in mines operated with conventional panel caving in a complex geotechnical environment.CITATION:Rivera, N, Music, A and Cisternas, C, 2016. Sulphide minerals, such as pyrite and sphalerite, are leached by ferric sulphate. This reaction produces ferrous sulphate and other dissolved products. The ferrous sulphate is re-oxidized to ferric sulphate by bacteria. These reactions can be written as: [ ] However, in 1964 Silverman and Ehrlich proposed that this is not the only role that is played by bacteria. These researchers proposed that T. ferrooxidans enhances the rate of oxidation of pyrite above that achieved by chemical reaction with ferric sulphate at the same solution conditions. This enhancement in the rate of dissolution was proposed to occur by direct microbiological action, possibly by the extra cellular secretion of an enzymatic oxidant. Since the Silverman and Ehrlich proposal, different authors have made opposing claims concerning the action of T. ferrooxidanson pyrite. A novel, low-pressure adaptation of Praxair?s coherent jet technology utilizing CoJet lances was developed for application at Inco&apos;s Copper Cliff Smelter where oxygen is available in large tonnage quantities but only at relatively low supply pressures (< 193 kPa header pressure). The project objectives were to evaluate the effect of coherent jet technology on controlling oxygen lance accretion (?horn?) formation and to increase oxygen efficiency in the Inco Oxygen Top-Blowing Nitrogen Bottom Stirring (TBBS) MK Reactor used for converting nickel- contaminated chalcocite to semi-blister copper. This paper describes the development and subsequent implementation and testing of two CoJet lances in this application.

"A computer simulation model of a dragline has beer developed for the study of alternative dragline deployment schemes for varying geological and mining conditions. In this paper, the mathematical aspects of the model, the input data and output results are discussed. An application of the model to a coal mine in eastern Kentucky is presented.IntroductionDraglines are very productive machines. To extend their operating ranges, they are operated in several modes such as advance benching, key cut, extended benching and pullback. Unfortunately, these variations result in low machine productivities. Appropriate methods to operate these machines must be developed on the basis of detailed analyses of dragline performance under varying geological and mining conditions. There are several standard engineering procedures for the selection of dragline, and design of a dragline pit (Ramani, Iroegbu and Manula, 1976). However, the complex interrelationship which exists among equipment, methods and natural conditions can be quantified only through orderly and systematic experiments.Computer simulation is well suited to studying these types of equipment selection and method layout problems. Several alternatives can be analyzed in a relatively short time by the modification of input variables. Also, the application of computer simulation models can significantly reduce the manpower and cost required for such analysis."

The outlook for suppliers of energy to the expanding economies of the Pacific Basin region is essentially positive, but particularly for exporters of high quality steam coal. This paper argues that economic growth in the Pacific Basin region has exceeded world economic growth for some years and that this will continue to be the case for the next decade at least. It looks briefly at the link between economic growth and energy demand and at the relationship between energy demand and the demand for electricity. Changing preferences in fuel mix for electrical generation in the region are noted and tentative forecasts made about variations in this mix. The pros and cons of various forms of fuel used to generate electricity are considered from the point of view of the consumer. Having concluded that steaming coal in particular is likely to become even more important as a generator of base load electricity, the paper looks at the opportunities this presents for exporters such as Australia, and touches on some factors that could prevent development of those opportunities. This paper will concentrate on electrical energy. For the purposes of this paper, the Pacific Basin refers essentially to Australia, New Zealand and the Asian countries bordering the Western Pacific. As a supplier, Siberia is not included because, although it has great potential, it is thought that problems of climate, infrastructure and political restructuring will delay the realisation of that potential until the next century. Although it deals with the Pacific Basin region, where many countries are industrialising rapidly from a predominantly agricultural base, it looks at the experience of mature industrial DECD economies where their experiences seem relevant.

The Late Miocene gold-silver bearing epithermal system at Waihi has some close similarities in its paleo-thermal and geochemical structure with modern, volcanic-hosted geothermal systems such as Ohaaki-Broadlands. At Waihi an extensive braided quartz vein system is enveloped by hydrothermally altered andesites with minor tuff breccias and tuffs. A main stage of vein filling consists of multiple phases of chalcedonic quartz and fine to medium grained quartz, which are accompanied by pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and acanthite below the base of oxidation. Platy calcite is present locally. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that the main stage quartz was deposited at temperatures of 189¦-273¦C from dilute (Tm of -0.1 to -1.0¦C) fluids that were locally boiling. Homogenisation temperature Th versus Tm data points lie within the field enveloped by dilution and boiling/gas loss paths determined for the Ohaaki geothermal field, and indicates that the parent hydrothermal fluid for the Waihi epithermal system had a similar composition to that at Ohaaki, ie 0.2 wt% equiv NaCl and 3.3 wt% equiv CO2. The hydrothermal alteration mineralogy and the isotopic composition of vein calcite indicate that the hydrothermal fluid contained relatively high concentrations of CO2 , as at Ohaaki. Oxygen isotope analyses of main stage quartz range from 6.1 to 11.6 %0 and of vein calcite from 2.29 to 9.4%0. Calculated d18Owater values for the hydrothermal fluid that deposited the main stage quartz range from 2.0 to -5.7%0, with a trend to less negative values with depth. They are similar to those in the deep chloride fluid in active geothermal systems with a substantial fluid throughput. A high fluid throughput at Waihi system is also evident from the extensive high intensity hydrothermal alteration and large volume of quartz deposited in the vein system.

Observed mineral assemblages in the Mt. Lyell copper deposit can be correlated with phase equilibrium investigations in the systems Cu-Fe-S and Fe-Zn-S. The trend of crystallization (or paragenetic sequence) of the ores is reflected in a progressive increase in the Cu: Fe and metal: sulphur ratios of the assemblages. This trend agrees with the regional zoning of the district. Tentative relationships between the paragenetic sequence, sulphur vapour pressure, and temperature are presented graphically. The absence of a suitable geological thermometer prevents precise elucidation of the range of temperatures and pressures which existed during crystallization.INTRODUCTIONRecent phase equilibrium investigations of metal-sulphur systems at the Geophysical Laboratory, Washington, D.C. provide valuable information on the stability relations of a number of important sulphide minerals. This data, when applied to natural ore deposits, may be expected to clarify two special problems which confront the ore petrologist seeking to interpret observed data in terms of a particular physical and chemical environment of ore deposition. These two problems are the sequence of formation of sulphide minerals (commonly designated the paragenetic sequence) and an elucidation of the range of temperatures and pressures which existed during crystallization. [IN CONNECTION with its work on the conversion of coal to liquid cud gaseous fuels,3 the Bureau of Mines has always striven to keep informed of developments in this and related fields so that unnecessary duplication of effort could be prevented and so that useful ideas, presented in scientific and technical literature, could be evaluated as quickly as possible. Thus the E has compiled expensive literature and patent abstracts on the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis4 and hydrogenation d e venation of coal at elevated h temperatures and pressures.5 6 This publication differs from the references just given in that it covers patent applications, which may or may not have been approved for issuance as a patent, and also includes later material. The patent literature is, of courses, a valuable source for new ideas. German patent, have been particularly useful in this field because both processes for the complete conversion of coal to fluid fuels originated in Germany and were thoroughly investigated there because of the shortage or of indigenous fluid fuels. Among the German literature relating to these processes are patent applications. In contrast to the United States, Germany has a system in which applications are published before the final patents are issued. This arrangement permits the public to view all the applications and not just those for which a patent was granted as is done in the U.S. system. When main of the invention are judged not patentable by the German Patent Office, such documents nevertheless may contain useful ideas for scientists and engineers.]

Gwynfynydd is a small, high-grade black shale-hosted vein-gold deposit. The Chidlaw Link Zone is the only area being mined and contains 24 000 t ore grading 15.2 g/t gold. Within the Link Zone a complex vein structure occurs consisting of a mother vein up to 5 m thick and narrow (less than 0.5 m) leader veins. The former shows minor variations in dip, strike and thickness, whereas the latter show marked changes in all three. The leader veins are hosted within the footwall zone of the mother vein and both are composed of quartz with galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and minor arsenopyrite. The vein system is transected by a series of cross-vein and intra-vein dip-slip faults. Pockets of gold occur at vein intersections or branches and within the complex footwall zone and are often related to variations in vein attitude and/or geometry. The Chidlaw Link Zone displays a complex, erratic distribution of gold mineralisation and a multi-stage history of structural activity, fluid flow and mineral deposition

"A significant effort is expended on preparation of the capital estimate for feasibility studies. The development of the operating cost estimate is usually allocated a significantly smaller budget and less emphasis is placed on ensuring the accuracy of the operating cost. This paper presents a comparison of capital and operating costs of hydrometallurgy processing plants in order to demonstrate the importance that variations in operating costs have on the overall life-of-mine costs. The analysis is supported by a case study on the operating costs of a water treatment plant at an existing Australian hydrometallurgy facility at the feasibility design level. INTRODUCTIONDetermination of the economic validity of a minerals processing project is a critical outcome of a feasibility study. In many cases, the financial results of the feasibility study will determine if the project should proceed to execution. Ensuring that these results are reliable and built upon sound engineering practices allows companies to make informed decisions on resource opportunities and the selected technology.The methodology for developing a capital cost estimate at the feasibility level is well established. Specialist engineering estimators use budget quotations, first principle estimation and rules-of-thumb to develop an estimate with an accuracy of typically -10% to +15%. Cost reporting software packages are used to methodically build up the estimate from design information supplied by the engineering disciplines. Risk analysis and capital expense workshops are carried out to identify potential deficiencies in the estimate. It is widely recognized that in order to successfully produce a feasibility level capital estimate with an appropriate level of accuracy, a rigorous development process is necessary.The development of the operating cost estimate is typically less rigorous than the capital cost estimate. The operating cost is normally derived by the process engineering discipline and rarely are specialist estimators used to support the development. The allocated budget for producing an operating cost is usually smaller and less emphasis is placed on ensuring the accuracy and contingency reflect the most likely operating cost scenario."

"SynopsisGibb Consulting Services was contracted by Eskom Line Engineering Services to conduct an investigation to determine the absolute displacement to date and infer the current rate of displacement of unsurveyed colliery backfill.At the test site, where a 400 kV power line is to be constructed, neither the surface nor the backfill material had been monitored and it was not possible to state whether the surface will be subject to future settlement that may compromise surface infrastructure. Therefore indirect methods of estimating current and future displacements needed to be found to act as a proxy for a comprehensive long-term settlement monitoring exercise and provide a reasonable estimate for the settlement that has occurred in the decades of mining.The innovative solution was to recover essentially undisturbed core from backfill using a sonic drill rig and use the measured dry density values from the samples as a proxy for the rate and absolute displacement in the backfill.The success in obtaining an essentially undisturbed backfill core and the clear relationship of the backfill density with age and depth allowed the conclusion to be issued that the power line infrastructure can be constructed over the backfill; with a warning that once the water table recovers after mining ceases some collapse settlement may occur.With this method, the amount of settlement can be predicted and, if proven conclusively, provides a way to confidently release huge areas of currently waste ground for future surface infrastructural development.IntroductionIn coal mining, it is normal mining practice to backfill the newly mined-out voids with the excavated waste rock and soils. As there is no requirement for the mining companies to uniformly compact the spoil or accurately monitor surface or inter-backfill displacement, these backfilled voids are prone to differential compaction and consolidation settlement. They are therefore avoided as sites for future surface infrastructure work, especially for linear structures such as roads, railways, and power lines."

[Determine how subsidence resulting from underground coal mining affects surface structures, and evaluate the usefulness s of the tiltmeter for monitoring foundation movement. Approach The Bureau of Mines is studying foundation response to mine subsidence in order to determine how subsidence-induced ground movements affect foundations in place directly above the mint. These investigations are essential if economic mitigation and repair techniques are to be made. In addition, commercially available tiltmeter are being evaluated (or use as a cost-effective monitoring technique. To study foundation response and to evaluate the tiltmeter system, full-scale model foundations were constructed, instrumented, and monitored for three years. Vertical and horizontal displacements, tilt magnitudes and directions, and observed damages were recorded. Displacements were compared with measured lilt to determine if the tiltmeter was tracking foundation response to subsidence, The Bureau developed a computer software package to aid in the reduction and analysis of the tiltmeter data.]

"Sampling may be mandatory for safety or environmental reasons. It may be because the value of a sale needs to be determined or to provide important data for investments. Whatever the reason, an incorrect sample will come at a risk. Only the person that relies on sampling data can imagine what the potential cost of such risk is.Sampling itself has a cost too; the direct cost of a quality control department and indirect cost for interrupting a process, such as stopping a conveyor belt during loading. If all material is the same then only one small sample is enough. But if all the material is different, then a very large sample must be tested; in the conveyor belt scenario it must be stopped very frequently and the associated cost will be high.A good sampling plan finds the proper balance between risk and cost. A good sample must be small enough to handle yet large enough to be representative for what information is required. All good samples have three things in common: there was proper access to the material the sampling tool allowed equal probability of particles being selected nothing was disregarded, everything was included.This too is the core of Gy’s ideal sampling scenario, where all particles have the same probability of being selected and included in the sample. There is risk of bias when part of a lot is excluded from the sample. Extra care is needed when sampling particularly heterogeneous, segregated or layered materials. The sampling tool should never systematically leave out a portion; it shall not push aside large or hard particles. Wet samples shall not stick to the sampling tool.
