Analyses of scheelite from all the known scheelite fields in the South Island of New Zealand have shown that the scheelites are essentially molybdenum-free. The scheelites are almost stoichiometric CaWO4, except for some strontium replacing the calcium, with a maximum of 0·92 per cent SrO. Variation in strontium content appears to be' related to the metamorphic grade of the enclosing rocks.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Block caving is a distinct caving method applied mostly to large, massive, ore bodies because of its in¬herent low cost and high production capabilities. Areas of sufficient size are removed by undercutting so that the mass above will cave naturally. Drawing of the caved ore at the bottom of the ore column causes the caving action to continue upward until all of the ore above the undercut level is broken into sizes suitable for handling. When properly applied, block caving results in a lower mining cost per ton than any other under¬ground method. There are three distinct forms: (1) dividing the horizontal area into rectangular or preferably square or nearly square blocks, drawing evenly over the entire area to maintain an approximately horizontal plane of con¬tact between broken ore and caved capping; (2) divid¬ing the horizontal area into panels across the ore body, retreating by undercutting manageable areas from one end of the panel to the other and maintaining an in¬clined plane of contact between the broken ore and caved capping (thus the name panel caving); and (3) no division of horizontal area of the ore body into defi¬nite blocks or panels (this is termed mass caving). Undercutting may be from wall to wall, retreating from one end of the ore body to the other, maintaining an inclined plane of contact between the broken ore and caved capping. The total active caved area is deter¬mined by the size of block that will not produce undue stress on workings below the undercutting level and by total production requirements. This type of operation is also referred to as panel caving at some properties. SUITABLE ORE BODIES Block caving in its various forms is applicable to deposits of various shapes and ores of various strengths. Its success is governed by rigid requirements and limi¬tations. In unsuitable deposits or where improperly em¬ployed, the loss of ore may exceed that of any other mining method. Good planning, systematic work pro¬cedures, careful supervision, and good judgment con¬tribute to its success. Ore Characteristics Included as a necessary characteristic in an ore body suited to a successful block-caving operation is a proper fracture pattern. Ore hardness should be another gov¬erning factor, and the toughness or softness of the ore should be considered. There must be sufficient horizon¬tal area available for expansion of the undercut, if neces¬sary, to start the caving process. Large, massive, ore bodies usually meet these conditions. Veinlike deposits must be wide and dip rather steeply to conform to the block-caving limitations. The capping must be of such a nature as to cave when the underlying ore is being removed since the weight of the overburden aids in crushing the ore. The most favorable capping character¬istic is that it breaks into coarse pieces and resists attrition as the block is drawn. Soft capping, by breaking into fine pieces and sifting into the ore or channeling through the ore to the drawpoints, can seriously dilute the ore and hinder the extraction of clean ore from the blocks. Types of Ore In block caving, a fairly uniform distribution of val¬ues in the ore is necessary. Grade values may range from low grade to high grade, but most often the sys¬tem is applied to low-grade ores. Wide veins, thick beds, or massive deposits of homogeneous ore overlain by ground which will cave constitute suitable ore bodies. The ore must be such that it can be supported while blocks are being developed and undercut but breaks up readily when caved. Some applications include porphyry copper, disseminated molybdenite, hematite in the Lake Superior iron district, limonite deposits in northern Spain, the diamond mines of South Africa, asbestos and nickel in Canada, and massive magnetite in Pennsylvania. Size and Shape Outline of the ore body should be fairly regular, and the sides of the ore body should dip steeply. It may not be economical to mine small portions of ore extending into the walls of the deposit, and low-grade inclusions in the ore cannot be left unmined. Some dilution of the ore, as mining progresses, by low-grade or barren cap¬ping is inevitable and, unavoidably, some clean ore is left between drawpoints. Determining Cavability The use of rock mechanics is sometimes advantageous in helping to determine the cavability of an ore deposit. The US Bureau of Mines has information and testing ability which can assist in determining the cavability of ore types. Several competent consulting orga¬nizations knowledgeable in rock mechanics can also as¬sist in evaluating the cavability of an ore body. Some recent work has been done to better define the cavability index of various ore bodies; an example of how this was determined is discussed by McMahon and Kendrick (1969). The intensity of the fracture pattern is a critical parameter to be analyzed. The question to be answered is, "How intense must the fracture pattern be?" Table 1 is a tabulation of the size of rock fragments that appear at the drawpoint of various block-cave mines around the world. These are indicative of the fracture-pattern spac¬ing and, as can be seen, they vary substantially from the almost sandy material at the Mather mine to fairly sizable blocks at the Grace mine. Several sets of fractures are essential to promote good caving. Ideally, two vertical sets at nearly right angles to each other and a third set nearly horizontal are required to insure a good caving ore body. The extraction of copper(II) from sulphate solution was investigated using LIX®984N in kerosene. The parameters that could affect the extraction, such as equilibrium pH, extractant concentration, salt concentration, various diluents, and temperature, were separately investigated. On the basis of slope analysis, the complex formed in the organic phase is proposed to be CuR2, where R is the anionic part of LIX®984N. The extraction equilibrium constant and Gibbs free energy ( G) of the extraction process were determined. The positive value of H obtained from temperature variation studies showed that the extraction process is endothermic. The extraction of copper was lowest when chloroform was used as the diluent. Separation and recovery of copper from a synthetic copper-nickel solution containing 6.35 g/L Cu(II) and 0.58 g/L Ni(II) was carried out using 20%(v/v) LIX® 984N. The separation factor ( = DCu/DNi) was found to be pH-dependent. A two-stage batch countercurrent extraction was carried out at an O:A ratio of 3:4 at equilibrium pH 1.05 for extraction of copper from copper-nickel solution, followed by copper stripping from the loaded organic phase with 15% H2SO4 at an O:A ratio of 3:1.

Jennmar Corporation. in an effort to improve mine roof control, has conducted extensive study and research comparing tensioned point anchor resin systems versus the use of non-tensioned fully grouted rehar. Preliminary indications are showing that in thinly laminated, weak strata, tensioned point anchor resin systems are providing more effective roof control than the non-tensioned fully grouted rehar. In this paper two case studies are presented in which tensioned point anchor resin systems were utilized to stabilize and control the mine roof in two different mines. Both mines are alike in many ways, but yet very different in other aspects. However, the mines do share one main common factor. and that being the non-effectiveness of the non-tensioned fully grouted rebar in controlling the thinly lamininated strata in each respective mine.

Coal sorting with an x-ray-transmission (XRT) sensor has experienced a lot of development since first described by Jekinson et.al. in 1974. Powerful computers and increasingly sensitive X-ray scintillation counters enabled the development of high-performance sensor-based sorting machines. The first industrial installation of a belt-type XRT-sorting for coal is in operation since 2004. It is upgrading high quality coal from 1% ash to 0.7% ash for cathode production. In comparison to the high quality coal which is treated with a belt-type sorter, the chute type sorter has been successfully optimized for high volume coal treatment of lower quality coals. This project was funded by the German Environmental Fund (Project Nr.244444). In cooperation with the RWTH Aachen University and Isambane Processing, CommodasUltrasort(now Tomra Sorting Solutions) conducted extensive pilot test work under production conditions in 2010 for the destoning of power station coal at Arnot Power Station in South Africa. The experience gained during this pilot test phase led to an optimized, redesigned PRO Secondary XRT Chute sorter which is now in operation at a South African coal mine. This flexible semi-mobile modular destoning plant is treating a size range of -120 mm +30 mm at a throughput of 150 tph. The implementation of this plant not only reduces the ash content, abrasiveness index and sulfur content significantly, but also reduces royalties, water treatment and transport costs.

Introduction The US Office of Surface Mining (OSM) is proposing changes to the Code of Federal Regulations in the interest of minimizing the adverse effects of excess-spoil-fill construction on the “prevailing hydrologic balance, fish, wildlife and other environmental values” (70 FR 35112). The proposed changes will require: (1) minimization the amount of excess spoil generated at a mine site; (2) minimization of the size of the fills constructed; (3) consideration of alternative configurations for disposal; and (4) development of a disposal plan that would minimize adverse impacts to the environment.1 To achieve those objectives, mining companies operating in steep-sloped Appalachia will likely build excess spoil fills (also called valley fills) that toe out at higher elevations in the hollows (i.e. to prevent or limit burial of streams). Consequently, the slopes of fill foundations will generally be steeper. Whereas the authors of this paper support these measures to protect the hydrologic balance and general environment, we wish to point out that placement of fills on steeper foundations can negatively impact the stability of the fills if proper care is not taken during their construction. It is important to note that in addition to impairing human safety, valley fill instability can negatively impact streams, the riparian habitat etc., and thus defeat the very purpose of the spoil minimization measures proposed. We do not, however, propose additional regulatory requirements pertaining to valley fill stability. Rather, we intend to emphasize the importance of engineering requirements already on the books, especially as they apply to the predominant type of valley fill constructed: the durable rock fill. We believe that the practice of restricting valley fills, to higher elevations in the watershed leaves less room for error in the design and construction of stable structures. This paper gives a quick review of the nature of excess spoil generation; methods and requirements of excess spoil fill construction, and the to-date stability record of the fills. The interest in excess spoil minimization and how it affects valley fill construction is also discussed. Most importantly, we will review long-standing issues pertaining to proper design and construction measures with respect to durable rock fills and discuss how they will become more critical as spoil minimization is practiced.

"The gravity-recoverable gold (GRG) ore characterization test was developed 15 years ago and has been applied to hundreds of ore samples. The test accurately determines the size distribution of GRG, at which grind it is recoverable, and the extent of its liberation above 150 µm. This contribution shows how the test can be simplified, what are the likely problems to occur, and what information is then lost. Two simplified versions of the test are presented, of which the simplest, grinding a 20-kg sample to a P80 of 75 µm, is retained as the best one. A database of 18 comparative tests is presented. The choice of the full GRG test vs. the simple test is discussed, as is the deportment of the GRG recovered in the standard test but not in the simplest test.INTRODUCTIONThe GRG test was developed in 1990 to characterize the progressive liberation of gold in representative samples of ores, with the primary objective of generating data for a gold gravity recovery model (Woodcock and Laplante, 1993; Laplante et al., 2000). Characterization includes the size distribution of GRG as well as the grind size at which it becomes recoverable. This is achieved in a 3-stage protocol of liberation and recovery using a laboratory centrifuge unit, a Laboratory Knelson Concentrator 3 inches in diameter (KC MD3). This protocol is shown in Figure 1. The first stage takes place at a F100 of 850 ?m (F80 of ~550 ?m), the second at F80 of 180 ?m, and the third at a P80 of 75 ?m. The rationale for the three cycles is the desire to preserve the original size distribution of the gold grains in the ore and to obtain a recovery grind size curve. The feed is a representative sample of ore that can be extracted from ore samples (e.g. drill core reject) or stream products of the grinding circuit other than circulating loads or product having undergone hydraulic classification (e.g. rod mill discharge or SAG screen undersize). Ideally the samples should weigh between 60 and 100 kg, depending on feed grade and gold top size. It is beyond the scope of this paper to fully discuss measures of representativity in the ore sample, for example Gy’s minimum sample mass model (Gy, 1979). However, further work in this regard may be an opportunity. The large initial weight facilitates representativity and minimizes weight and sulphide recovery to the concentrate (since concentrate weight is relatively constant at ~100 g), which limits the recovery of gold in nonsulphide gangue or gold carriers (i.e. sulphides). Thus, the 100 g concentrate carries principally discrete gold species, such as electrum, and native gold. The concentrate and a 600-g representative sample of gangue of each stage are screened down to 20 ?m and each size class is fire assayed (the concentrates to extinction, the tails up to 30 g per size class). The five coarsest size fractions of stage-1 concentrate are individually upgraded using a hydrosizer and the concentrates examined with an optical microscope to assess the degree of liberation of the gold phase. Scanning electron microscope work has established that the GRG has an excellent degree of liberation below 150 ?m in stage 1 and generally a good degree of liberation in stages 2 and 3 (Guerney et al., 2003); as a result the size distribution of the GRG has been found to approach closely that of gold grains (Nesset et al. 2005)."

"INTRODUCTION )ne of the most important wartime activities of the Bureau of Mines was the search for new sources of minerals necessary to the prosecution of the war. As a part of the investigation of strategic mineral deposits in the United States under the Strategic Minerals Act (Public 117, 76th Cong., 1st Sess., Ch. 190), examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines investigated and sampled various deposits of chrome ore in California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington, and those deposits that warranted further study were explored by diamond drilling, trenching, and drifting, as re¬quired. During these investigations, samples were submitted to the Ore Dressing Section of the Salt Lake City Station for metallurgical testing. This paper gives data summarizing results obtained from laboratory ore-dressing studies of the chrome ores submitted.Although the deposits range widely in geographical location, the mineral occurrence of all of them is strikingly similar. Chromium, in all of the ores tested, is present as impure chromite or chromium spinel. Although pure chromite (FeCr204 or FeO.Cr203) contains 68 percent chromic oxide, the iron may be replaced in varying amounts of magnesium, and the chromium may be replaced similarly by aluminum and ferric iron. In studying concentration methods as applied to chrome ores, the composition of the chrome mineral is of fundamental importance, because it is manifestly impossible to produce a high-chrome concentrate from a low-chrome chromite by any mechanical process.In all but one of the ores, the gangue material consists of olivine or altered olivine minerals such as serpentine, antigorite, and chrysotile. The exception, the Antelope or from Montana, has a gangue chiefly composed of actinolite, chlorite, and talc."

Ground instability is among the major causes of serious incidents and production disruptions in the mining industry and has a significant impact on safety. Mining companies may have operations in a number of jurisdictions with varied regulatory requirements for ground control management. As these companies expand into countries where mining regulations are formative or lacking clear definition, ground control practices are usually developed by local mine personnel based on their experience. In many cases, inconsistent procedures and standards are generated, which can lead to an increase in occurrence of underground incidents due to difficulties and confusion in implementation. This situation has forced some mining companies to standardize their ground control practices by geographic regions or divisions. Though this approach is an improvement, it may not lead to effective management of ground control issues across all operations of a global mining company. Barrick Gold Corporation, with operations in North and South America, Australia and Africa, decided to adopt a global approach to ground control management. This global approach requires all Barrick operations to prepare and implement an effective ground control management plan (GCMP) based on site specific conditions and company guidelines. It is also required that the GCMP be developed through application of sound geotechnical engineering practices and be consistent with local regulatory requirements and Barrick safety policies. All Barrick underground operations have GCMPs in place, and its surface operations are now involved in the initiative. This paper presents Barrick?s global approach to underground mine ground control management and outlines the content and process for the development of a GCMP.

Two separate secant pile cofferdams were constructed as part of an extensive rehabilitation and modernization of the New York City Transit's Lexington Avenue/Third Avenue IND Station at 53rd Street in Manhattan. Major high rise structures and outpatient hospital facilities bordered the site. The roadway is an important east-west corridor in mid-Manhattan. In order to perform the construction of new escalator and elevator shafts over 250 linear feet of secant wall was installed to the top of rock or to the existing subway roof. Much of the secant wall was constructed from below a temporary roadway decking system using a low headroom rig. The roadway decking system was supported on shallow spread footings. The secant piles were drilled using crawler mounted hydraulic rotary drill rigs. The secant wall provided a watertight, rigid cofferdam that minimized settlement and other disruptions to existing structures and utilities. During later stages of the project the secant wall also supported the roadway decking system.

To insure domestic production of aluminium for, essential civilian and defense uses, the Government, under authority of the Defense Production Act of 1950, programed and promoted an aluminum-expansion program that will more than double the primary production capacity that existed in 1949. In view of this vastly increased production, the raw materials, with respect to both quantity and sources, are reviewed. The raw-material consumption pattern, the requirements during an expansion period when excess quantities of materials for starting up new facilities are consumed, and the probable requirements for production of 1.7 million tons per year of primary aluminum are discussed. The raw materials that presented the most difficult supply problems were bauxite, electrical power, and fluoride salts, and the supply pattern for these materials probably will undergo changes. A major part of the electrical energy for the increased capacity was to come from thermal generation, Jamaica-was to become a major source of bauxite, and synthetic fluoride salts were replacing natural cryolite in increasing quantities. Other raw-material requirements discussed are: Soda ash; lime, and limestone; starch; filter cloth; fuel; alumina; the carbonaceous materials, green and calcined petroleum coke, high-and low-temperature pitch and coke or anthracite; cryolite; aluminum fluoride; the materials going into production of synthetic fluorides, acid-grade fluorspar, and sulfuric acid; and labor. INTRODUCTION The raw materials for the aluminum industry that have received the most publicity are bauxite, the ore that supplies elemental aluminum, and electrical energy, the means by which aluminum oxide is reduced to metal. A number of other important materials are, however, required in large quantities in the production of primary aluminum metal.

The government of India convened a precedent-setting meeting in New Delhi on Nov. 12, 2001.The meeting brought together regulators and the mining industry in an attempt to fix the industry’s mine development problems in that country. More than 150people attended the all-day session. Ram Vilas Paswan, Minister of Coal and Mines, chaired the meeting. Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of State for Coal and Mines, was also present. The secretary of the Department of Mines and the Joint Secretaries and Additional Secretary also participated. The Department of Mines’ mandate is for economic growth: to get new mine development going and to make investment in mining attractive for both domestic and foreign-owned companies.

Des conditions de contrainte élevée signifient une pression accrue au front de taille et sur les structures minières tels les piliers de mine et les fins de zone, un risque de rupture violente ou de coup de toit plus élevé, des zones de rupture plus grandes au pourtour des excavations, des charges accrues sur le support de terrain, etc. Le présent article fournit un aperçu du travail fait à l?intérieur du Programme de Contrôle de terrain de CANMET au cours des sept (7) dernières années, entre 1995 et 2001, pour comprendre et suivre l?évolution des niveaux de contrainte à l?intérieur des structures minières. Les propriétés déterminées en laboratoire sur des échantillons rocheux et les prévisions effectuées au moment de la conception sont comparées avec les observations effectuées en chantier à la paroi des excavations et à l?intérieur de la masse rocheuse. La plupart des cas discutés ici montrent une corrélation satisfaisante entre les observations effectuées en chantier d?une part, et les résultats d?essai obtenus en laboratoire et les calculs réalisés lors de la conception d?autre part. Ces observations peuvent donc être considérées comme des moyens relativement sûrs pour vérifier et suivre l?évolution des niveaux de contrainte présents à l?intérieur des structures minières.

The Stawell Goldfield, the westernmost of the main Victorian fields, has produced over a million and a quarter ounces of gold from one and three-quarter million tons of ore. The lodes are quartz reefs and sulphide bodies occurring in sediments of lower Ordovician or upper Cambrian age. The lodes are confined to a relatively narrow suite of weak rocks lying between stronger ones above and below and there is a definite relationship between fold structure, pitch and strength of folding and ore.LOCATION HISTORY AND PAST PRODUCTIONThe town of Stawell, situated 150 miles north-westerly from Melbourne on the main railway and road to Adelaide, is the most westerly of the main gold areas of Victoria. Alluvial gold was found at Pleasant Creek (now Stawell West) in 1853 and the usual "rush" followed. Numerous alluvial leads, some surface, others buried under up to 100 ft. of Tertiary sediments were worked. The alluvial gold was soon exhausted, but in 1857 gold-bearing reefs were found on the slopes of a prominent ridge on the northern edgeof the present town. Early reef mining was by small working parties mining to shallow depths only and treating their ore at public crushing plants. Some of the early returns were very high grade. The next stage was the amalgamation of claims and the formation of companies, with their own treatment plants. This stage continued till the last mine closed in 1921. These companies had, by present standards, small holdings and far too many shafts were sunk, resulting in less efficient prospecting and operation.Since 1921 there have been one or two small scale attempts to revive mining but without success. "Fracture mechanics plays an important role in studies of geologic materials such as rock and coal. Yet fracture data are scarce for rock and most limited or unreliable for coal. A testing system was developed which can apply mixed mode loads to a crack tip in many rocks and geologic materials. It is possible to subject the test specimen to pure mode I, various mixed modes and a nearly pure mode II fracture load. The system is currently used to study the mechanics of fine fragment formation in various coals. Experimental measurements include KI and KII' fracture velocity and acoustic emission.INTRODUCTIONA major research program at The Pennsylvania State University is directed to understanding the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation in various coals. The program represents an effort to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (black lung) in coal miners. The principal source of the respirable coal fragments is the cutting operation which forms and liberates the particles by a fracture process. Present understanding of the mechanics of the events which form and liberate these particles is meager (Cook, 1982).Current knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms of coal dust generation and entrainment in terms of the underlying fracture mechanics is critically needed to improve and possibly control the processes involved. Whether the cutting operation is done with a 'continuous miner' cutting machine, a plow or a longwall shearer, it is fundamentally a problem of mixed-mode crack propagation. When a cutting tool interacts with coal, it causes numerous cracks to propagate through the intact material. Numerous larger fragments are broken free, but another quantity of undesirable fine fragments is also created. The formation of these respirable fragments may be a direct result of the crack propagation process; hence, a thorough understanding of the fracture mechanics of coal is required to minimize production of the unwanted fine fragments.In most rock engineering applications, the rock material properties are of secondary importance to the rock mass properties; however, for rock fragmentation and rock cutting problems, it is rock material properties such as fracture toughness which are of prime interest (Bieniawski, 1980). Several rock cutting and rock failure theories have been proposed, but it is only very recently that fracture mechanics concepts have been successfully applied to the study of rock cutting mechanics. All cutting models seek to predict the cutting forces and the cutter geometry necessary to cause rock breakage and chip formation given some fundamental mechanical properties ~f the rock. Such models have wide applications in drilling, tunnel boring and mining problems. Nelson et al., (1985, 1986) has provided a very useful correlation between the laboratory measured fracture mechanics properties of rock and the performance of the disk cutters on tunnel boring machines."

According to the model of product life cycles, the global coal mining industry is in the stagnation phase. The coal demand of the main consumer, China, has peaked in 2013 and is slowly declining. The Norwegian sovereign wealth fund, the world’s largest, has excluded coal-related companies for ethical reasons. Important players like the UN or the EU have already begun to describe pathways towards decarbonization. Increasing competition between coal mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries like France, Spain, or Germany are only forerunners of this development—their centuries of coal production have been finished. The concept of sustainable development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress where ecological, economic, and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. But without the idea of competition, the concept of SD is incomplete. Questions arise, such as how can SD be realized on stagnating or declining markets without guarantees for companies “to live forever”? How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can declining mining regions sustainably progress into a better future? The German hard coal mining industry’s lifecycle has ended in 2018 after 60 years of stagnation and decline. As of 2019, all hard coal consumed in Germany will be imported, especially from Colombia, Russia, and South Africa. What has been done in Germany to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process is described in this paper. It may be useful for mining regions who will face a similar future sooner or later.

"Ilmenite is the most important titanium-bearing constituent of titaniferous iron ores. Such ores, of which the United States has abundant reserves, are of interest because they constitute an important potential source of both iron and titanium that may be tapped in times of stress, and which eventually may be utilized in the normal course of events.As the iron and titanium constituents of titaniferous iron ores are not completely separable from each other by ore-dressing methods, any process for metal recovery will, of necessity, involve reduction of the iron in ilmenite. Consequently, knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of ilmenite should supplement information already available concerning those ores. With this in view, the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines undertook to evaluate thermodynamic properties; the data obtained are the subject of this report.Three types of experimental work were involved. First, low-temperature specific heats of ilmenite were measured in the temperature range 500 to 29S° K. These data serve to evaluate the entropy, a quantity necessary for a reliable evaluation and correlation of other thermodynamic properties. Second, high-temperature heat-content measurements were made in the temperature range 298° to 1,743° K. The data serve to bridge the gap between room temperature and elevated reduction-process temperatures. Finally, hydrogen-reduction equilibria were measured in the temperature range 1,220° to1,375° K. These data-give a direct measure of the free energy of reduction of ilmonite at these temperatures and, in conjunction with results of the other two types of measurements, serve to obtain the heat of formation of ilmenite, a quantity not readily determinable by direct calorimetric means.The data are correlated to form a composite, self-consistent portrayal of the thermodynamic properties of ilmenite, which may be used in evaluating the efficacy of any reducing agent of known thermodynamic properties. Selective-reduction of iron in ilmenite by hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon are considered in this report."

WITH the exception of lead sulphate, all common metallic sulphates are completely decomposed upon heating into metallic oxide, sulphur trioxide, sulphur dioxide and oxygen. Some give up their trioxide readily at a low temperature, others require considerable heat and much time to be completely freed from sulphur. Kerl in 1881 arranged the principal metallic sulphates as they are decomposed by a rising temperature in the following order: silver, iron, copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt, manganese and lead, lead sulphate being decomposed only slightly at a white heat. The researches of Bradford, published in 1903, show, however, that ferrous sulphate is decom¬posed at 590° C., cupric sulphate at G53° C. and argentic sulphate at 1,095° C. By the present investigation it will be seen that zinc sulphate is decomposed at 739° C. As far then as our present knowledge goes, the order in which the decomposition of the leading metallic sulphates takes place is the one given in Table I.
