In the last 50 years there have been tremendous improvements in equipment used in development on underground mines. Compressed air powered jacklegs have been replaced by high powered electro-hydraulic drifters on sophisticated drill jumbos and load haul dump units have taken over from small shovels and rail cars.Despite the increase in power applied in key parts of the development cycle, average advance rates have fallen and costs have increased. The factor that is most often regarded as the main contributor to slowing advance rates is increased support requirements. Whilst there is no denying that the drive to improve safety has resulted in the requirement for more bolting and the installation of a skin support (mesh or shotcrete), this is not the only factor.Within the industry as a whole, many of the basic principles of development appear to have been lost over time. This paper looks at a historical case study and discusses some of the features of old development cycles that are no longer in use. This highlights some of the basics that appear to have been forgotten. These may be indicators to what may provide improvements in the conventional drill and blast development cycle.CITATION:Ross, I T, 2014. The studies herein reported were begun as a part of researches undertaken by the United States Geologü;al Survey looking to the more effcient utilization of the coal in the United States through the reduction of waste in its extnidion, and were continued as part of further researches having regard to the conservation of the fuel resources of this country and to the lessening of injuries and fatalities in coal mining. Among other phases of the general problem to be studied were the origin of the gas whidi escapes into coal mines, its modes of occurrence in the coal and rock strata, and the conditions governing its outflow into the mines. The subject of relative danger from destructive explosions due to gas and coal dust in different mines belonging to different coal fields was to be one of the principal lines of investigation. But this work was barely under way when the series of unusually disastrous explosions in the Naomi, .Monongah, and Darr mines of Pennsylvania and West Virginia, in December, 1907, afforded an exceptional occasion to observe the behavior of explosions on a large scale. Because of the opportunities for study afforded by these terrific explosions, the inquiry originally planned was d ¡verted to the more specific investigation of the conditions in tl10SC mines, and the examinations have been directed toward finding those qualities of gas and dust which were concerned in these explosions. The following discussion, therefore, consists essentially of a report on that subject; but it is far from being exhaustive, and is to be regarded as a preliminary outline of investigations which are still in progress. The first of the three mine explosions mentioned occurred in the Naomi mine of the United Coal Company, near Bellevernon, Pa., on Sunday, December 1, at 7.40 p. m. All the men who were within the mine at the time, fortunately only 34, were killed. Less than a week later there occurred in mines Nos. fì and 8 of the Fairmont Coal Company at Monongah, W. Va., the most disastrous mine explosion yet recorded in the annals of American mining. The mines were comparatively new and well laid out. Mine No.8 had been in operation only about two years and was the pride of the Fairmont Coal Company. Mine No.6 was first opened ahout four years earlier. In order to make it possible, in case of emergency, for either mine to be ventilated by the ventilating system of the other, the two sets of workings were connected underground. The F face heading of mine K o. 6 led direetly into No.2 north heading of No.8 mine. On Friday, Dcccmber 6, at about 10.30 in the morning, an explosion of unusual violcnce swept completely through both mines, pursuing its course throughout the numerous ramifications and bursting out of the two pit mouths, located It miles apart, nearly simultaneously. The slope of mine No.6 was only slightly damaged, but at the mouth of No.8 the destruction was very great. The fan was wrecked, the engine house was demolished, and mine timbers were blown across Monongahela River: As nearly as can be determined, 361 men were killed in the two mines by the explosion. .While the inspection of the Monongah mines was still in progress, on Thursday morning, December 19, at about 11.20, a similar explosion wrecked the Darr mine of the Pittsburgh Coal Company ut Jacobs Creek, Pu.; 238 men lost their lives in this explosion, which in number of casualties is second only to the :Monongah disustcr in the history of American mining. Of ull thc men in the mine at the , time of the explosion, only one mun, who happened to be within 100 feet of the ~iUrface on an old manway in a wet, unexploded portion of the mine, succeeded in escaping alive. The underground investigation of these mines was made in cooperation with Clarence Hall and ""Valter O. Snelling, of the United States Geological Survey, and James ""V. Paul, now of the Survey but at that time chief of the department of mines for vVest Virginia, to all of whom the author is greatly indebted for valuable assistance, suggestions, and advice. Mr. Paul will rcport on the nature of these explosions, the precipitating causes, their destructiveness, and the general cüliditions in these mines following the disasters. The present report is confined essentially to the laboratory examination of some of the explosive materials collected from these mines directly ufter the explosions.

A laboratory investigation was carried out on the characterization and beneficiation of sillimanite ore. Petrographic analysis indicated that the ore consisted of massive elongated sillimanite grains in a matrix of hematite, garnet, feldspar and silica. A procedure for estimating the percentage of sillimanite was developed using float-sink and magnetic-separation techniques. A liberation study was carried out to determine the level of size reduction required to achieve sufficient liberation while ensuring that gravity concentration techniques would be applicable. Laboratory testing was performed on the liberated ore to investigate the applicability of using wide-angle dense-medium cycloning to upgrade this ore. Initially, medium-only tests were carried out using various size distributions of magnetite and ferrosilicon as the dense-medium solids to evaluate the effects of operating conditions on medium segregation. Depending on the medium solids and operating conditions, either positive of negative differentials (difference between the relative densities of the underflow and overflow streams) were obtained. Based on these results, separation tests were performed to process nominal -1.2-mm sillimanite ore. The results indicated that sillimanite concentration could be obtained using a medium relative density that was much lower than would typically be used in a dense-medium cyclone separation.

Engineering design follows a six–step sequence. Demonstration of this sequence in materials engineering is less common. A case study is presented, using the 1989 paper by Gafner on the development of 990 gold-titanium alloy. This paper identifies a need, develops the problem, identifies alternatives, demonstrates the use of metallurgical principles to identify alternative responses, and shows how more favorable options are selected. The paper can also be used to illustrate engineering design as an iterative process. The paper is also useful as a starting point for more in-depth examination of specific elements of the design process, and lends itself to the creation of student exercises.

Most of the Indian coking coals are medium coking and of very high ash content. Beneficiation of these coals is a must for their utilisation in coke making. During washing while the ash content of the coal is reduced, the same is expected to affect the reactive-inert ratio and the proportion of various petrographic constituents in the clean coal. This will affect the coking behaviour, including the expansion characteristics, of such coal. An increase in expansion behaviour of coal increases the wall pressure and may damage the battery wall. Therefore, close monitoring of coking properties along with drop in ash is necessary for smooth use of the coal in coke ovens. An effort is, therefore, essential to understand the impact of washing on its coking properties. The studies were carried out with captive coals of Tata Steel, India. Three medium coking coal samples namely, VII A, VI A and XI SEB seam coals of West Bokaro Colliery were used for the study. The coal samples after washing to different ash levels were subjected to the following analysis: proximate, crucible swelling number (CSN), LT GK test, dilatometer and plastometer tests and petrography. The experimental data were then analysed to assess the relationship of various coking properties of the coal with its ash content. The studies clearly show that there is a strong impact of beneficiation of the coal on its coking behaviour. The impacts are more at lower level of ash in the clean coal. In general, the coking properties increase with a decrease in ash. This is primarily due to an enrichment of vitrinte materials in the clean coal and an increase in the reactive-inert ratio in the coals. However, the most important impact of the lowering ash is on the increase in the swelling nature of the coal. The coals with lower ash become highly expanding in nature. This may be very critical from operations of coke ovens point of view, especially stamp charged coke ovens. Necessary precaution should be taken in selecting the other coal blend constituents when these coals are beneficiated to a very low level of ash content.

Born in Bothaville (OFS) on the 26th August 1919, Daniel G. Krige grew up in Krugersdorp on the West Rand. Hematriculated from Monument High School in Krugersdorpin 1934 at the age of 15 and graduated with a B.Sc. (Eng.)degree in mining engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand at the end of 1938 (age 19). In 1938 he joined Anglo Transvaal where he worked on a number of gold mines until 1943, gaining a wide range of valuable practical experience in surveying, sampling and ore valuation. He then joined the Government Mining Engineer’s Department where he worked for 8 years during which time he participated in the uranium negotiations with the British and American authorities and designed the uranium pricing formula for the contracts which led to the establishment of South Africa's profitable uranium industry in the early 1950s. During the same period he began his pioneering work in the application of mathematical statistics to the valuation of new gold mines using a limited number of boreholes and of ore reserves for existing mines. His early papers in the application of mathematical statistics, some republished in French, created world-wide interest that led to the development of the science and concepts that surround the spatial evaluation of mineral resources and reserves known as geostatistics. This technique has contributed to improved ore evaluation techniques as well as the reduction of the financial risks associated with investment in mining enterprises. Furthermore, it led to the recognition of his contributions to the evaluations of mineral deposits through the coining of the term ‘kriging’ that is used to describe a spatial mineral evaluation process known and practised in international mining circles. He continued his work in geostatistics throughout his career as Group Financial Engineer of the Anglovaal Group until his retirement in1981 and afterwards for ten years as Professor of Mineral Economics at the Witwatersrand University. He is still active as a consultant and is a registered Professional Engineer. He has published some 90 technical papers both locally and overseas, some in Russia, and has lectured and participated in international congresses in many countries. His contributions were recognized by the Witwatersrand University through the award of the D.Sc. (Eng.) degree in1963, by three honorary degrees (from the universities of Pretoria, UNISA and Moscow State Mining University), by many awards from the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the International Association for Mathematical Geology, Die Suid Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns, the SME of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the International APCOM Council in1999, the University of Antofagasta in Chile, and by the South African President (Order for Meritorious Service, Class 1, Gold). He has served on various Government committees, notably that for State Aid for gold mines (1967/8) and designed the State Aid formula which enabled many mines to survive a period of low gold prices; also various taxation committees, and the mining mission to Iran in 1974. He is a fellow and/or honorary life member of various technical societies locally and overseas, including the Royal Society of South Africa. During the period in the Government service he also handled several of the post-war lease applications in the Free State and Klerksdorp goldfields. The fact that decisions on new gold mines of critical importance to the State and the economy as a whole, were being taken on a limited number of drillholes without any scientific analysis of the risks of failure, stimulated him to start basic research into ore evaluation. His approach was based on the application of Mathematical Statistics to these problems, an approach of which very little was known world-wide at that stage but which had already been initiated in South Africa by Sichel via the lognormal frequency distribution model. In Krige's 1951 paper published in the Journal of the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa he covered the statistical explanation of the conditional biases in ore block valuations and stimulated the use by several gold mines of regression corrections for routine ore reserve valuations, a technique which, in effect, was the first use on an elementary basis of what is now known as kriging. His 1952 paper introduced, inter alia the basic geostatistical concepts of ‘support’, ‘spatial structure’,’ selective mining units’ and ‘grade-tonnage curves’. His 1951 paper was based on his M.Sc. (Eng.) thesis submitted in the Department of Mining Engineering to the University of the Witwatersrand, and expounded his pioneering work in geostatistics in more detail. His early research papers that had stimulated interest in several mining circles overseas, were republished in French in1955, resulting in a major research effort by French mining engineers in this field. This, in turn, led to the establishment of the now world-renowned French school of ore evaluation in Fontainebleau, Le Centre de Geostatistique de l’École des Mines de Paris. "Vast amounts of time and money are spent fighting flow problems in plants that involve the handling or processing of industrial minerals. Because these types of projects tend to be capitalintensive, the right decisions, made at the design stage, can have a substantial positive effect on the economics of the project.Some of the problems related to solids flow in mineral processing plants include:•,Flow stoppages•,Uncontrolled flow•,Segregation of blended materials•,Build-up and dead material resulting in loss of live capacityUnfortunately few Universities in North America provide courses in the design or selection of bulk solids handling equipment, let alone the theory of bulk solids flow, with the result that engineers do not fully appreciate the effects of bulk solids handling on their process. The usual method of selecting “standard” equipment, all too often, leaves plant operators hammering on hoppers to promote flow, a technique that is not only usually ineffective but also unsafe and often causes damage to equipment. In short, too little consideration is given, at the design stage of projects, to the particular material and operating environment involved and how these will affect handling between process steps.This paper seeks to give a general understanding of bulk solids flow theory including flow patterns and flow property tests, and presents functional design guidelines to ensure reliable flow. As well, a case history will be presented. Our message is clear: To ensure uniform, reliable flow, a plant design must take into account the specific flow characteristics of the bulk solid to be handled or processed."

NATURE OF ORETHE Edna May ore consists mainly of clean quartz of a moderately hard and tough nature. The gold content is "free" and fairly coarse, so that a large percentage is recovered by amalgamation. The ore is practically free from metallic minerals.GENERAL OUTLINE OF PLANT AND TREATMENTThe ore, received from underground in trucks, is broken by a jaw breaker, then stamp-milled, follow~d by partial filie-grinding in pans. Mercury is used both in the mill boxes and pans. The pulp, on leaving the pans, passes over amalgamating tables and is then elevated by tailings pulp to cone classifiers and separated into a sand and slime product, each product receiving a separate cyanide treatment-sand by leaching in vats and slime by agitation and decantation in a "Trent" plant. Gold solutions from both sand and slime are precipitated together by zinc shavings in the usual type of precipitation boxes. Accumulated slime is trucked from the dam to a vortex mixer and from this point receives with the cement slime the same treatment.ORE BREAKING AND TRANSPORTThe ore is trucked from the brace of the shaft along an overhead line to the breaker station. Hence it is, by means of a "kick-up" dumped upon a grizzly, set with 2-in. spaces, the oversize being broken by a 15 x '9 Fraser and Chalmer jaw...

"Dating back to 1934, Con Mine is located directly south to the city of Yellowknife in the NWT, Canada. With mill operations ceasing in 2004, a challenging surface remediation situation resulted which required the treatment of close to 40,000 m3 of Arsenic impacted material.Through much of the period of 1941 to 1970, Con Mine treated their refractory arsenopyrite ore through the use of an Edwards Heath roaster. With mounting environmental pressure and through Canadian governmental studies during 1950 to 1970, attention was directed to the Arsenic Trioxide material being collected by two Doyle scrubbers on the Con’s roaster stack. In 1970, the roaster was decommissioned leaving the resulting Arsenic material in two containment areas on surface.As a result of Con Mine entering into remediation in 2004, the Con’s autoclave, commissioned in 1992, was dedicated to the immobilization of high impacted Arsenic material through the combination of excess Iron under high temperature and oxygen overpressure. Examined, herein, is the history and chemistry of the Con Mine autoclave as well as the two stages of chemistry for the Water Treatment Plant used to remove arsenic, heavy metals and WAD cyanide from tailings water. Simplified capping plans of the tailing containment areas and a high arsenic impacted area are also presented.INTRODUCTION TO CON MINECon Mine (Con) is situated just south of the City of Yellowknife in the North West Territories (NWT) Canada and is bounded locally by Yellowknife Bay (North Extension of Great Slave Lake) to the east and Kam Lake to the west (Figure 6). The discovery of gold at Con was made in 1934 and mineral rights were acquired by Consolidated Mining and Smelting Limited (Cominco) and Falconbridge soon thereafter. Nerco Minerals Limited (Nerco) took control in 1986 and in 1993, was subsequently sold to, Miramar Mining Corporation which in turn was purchased by friendly takeover involving Newmont Mining in November 2007 as a result of acquiring the Miramar’s Hope Bay project. Con’s underground operations ceased in September 2003 and have since entered into the remediation of the site. The current surface lease holdings are about 340 Hectares (Table 1) which sits on top of the Archean-aged Yellowknife Greenstone Belt."

Experimental studies for quantification of force and brittleness indices relevant to rock cutting performance are presented. A simple interpretation method is developed, which quantifies the force-penetration response obtained from indentation tests. Basic parameters of the quantification are force increment and decrementrates, force increment and decrement periods, and number of increment and decrement data points. Blocks of eleven different rock samples were collected from different operating mines in Turkey and subjected to indentation tests to calculate the indices. The samples included harzburgite, serpentinite, trona, limestone, claystone, two different sandstone samples, siltstone and three different chromite ore samples. The concept was validated by a set of full-scale linear cutting tests using a conical cutter for measuring the cutting performance in relieved and unrelieved conditions, i.e. cutter forces, specific energy, size distribution of rock cuttings. The rock cuttings were sieved to determine coarseness index, indicates coarse chip generation characteristics, and size distribution. The force index is moderately correlated with the cutting performance and mechanical properties of the rocks, and poorly correlated with the coarseness index and size distribution of cuttings. A general and moderate trend is observed between the brittleness index and the coarseness index, cutting performance for unrelieved cutting conditions and mechanical properties of the rocks. However, additional data is required to fill the data gaps and to potentially establish relationship between the brittleness index and all other parameters.

This paper presents the results of ground vibration measurements carried out in Gülyali Hisarcik Basalt open pit mine located on the north side of the Anatolia near Ordu province in Turkey. Within the scope of this study in order to predict peak particle velocity level for this site, ground vibration components were measured for 5 shots during bench blasting. In blasting operations; ANFO (blasting agent), gelatin dynamite (priming) and delay electric detonators (firing) were used as explosives. Parameters of scaled distance (charge quantity per delay and the distance between the source and the station) were recorded carefully and the ground vibration components were measured for all blast events using 5 different vibration monitors (4 White Mini-Seis and 1 Instantel Minimate Plus Models). The absolute distances between shot points and monitor stations were determined using GPS. The equation of square root scaled distance extensively used in the literature was taken into consideration for the prediction of peak particle velocity.

External trade strongly influences the well being of all nations. In the modern economic mechanism, no country is so well endowed that it has not to import commodities from others and to export its products in turn to make good its deficiencies, to rectify or improve its financial structure. From the standpoint of international commerce, Canada is strategically well placed. On the south she is bounded by the richest country in the world. On the east she faces the Atlantic, on the west the Pacific. On both coasts there are fine harbours to which lead great lines of railway that span the continent. Canada is now fifth among the exporting nations of the world. For disposal abroad, she has enormous quantities of primary commodities and substantial amounts of manufactured goods as well. But she is far from being self-sustaining. She is unusually dependent on foreign trade, not only because of the commodities she has to sell but because of the lack of many essential articles she does not or cannot produce. To Canada, external commerce is vastly more important than internal trade. The wealth of nations is decided by their ability to produce more than they need, to sell more than they buy, and to build up favourable balances resulting from trade or services. With few countries, however, are returns perennially satisfactory. Fruitful periods are followed by leaner years. In times of prosperity foreign credits are increased, monetary systems strengthened, reserves accumulated to withstand recurring days of strain. Today, the foundations of financial systems are being re-examined, "dogmas hitherto accepted as canonical are being questioned" . It is not only in Europe and America that men search for illumination in problems arising from monetary restrictions.

Abstract The in-situ stress field is one of the primary parameters influencing the performance of underground structures particularly in the Himalayas where there is strong influence of topography and geology on in-situ stresses. It is always advisable to measure the in-situ stresses, in whatever best way possible. Hydrofracturing is one of the methods by which in-situ stress can be measured. This paper briefly describes details of the concept of Hydrofracturing in arriving at the in-situ stresses of the rock mass at Pancheswar Project. The data obtained from the tests has been analysed, interpreted and the results are presented in this paper. Kurzfassung Das Spannungsfeld an Ort und Stelle ist einer der wichtigsten Parameter, die das Verhalten der Untergrund-Struktur beeinflussen, insbesondere in den Himalayas, wo die Topografie und die Geologie einen grossen Einfluss auf die oertlichen Spannungen ausueben. Es empfiehlt sich stets die Spannungen an Ort und Stelle so gut wie moeglich zu erfassen. Die Hydrofraktur bzw hydrografisches Zerstueckeln ist eine der Methoden, die bei den Messungen der oertlichen Spannungen verwendet werden koennen. Diese Abhandlung beschreibt kurz Einzelheiten ueber das Konzept von Hydrofraktur bei der Bestimmung der Spannungen an Ort und Stelle von der Felsmasse bezueglich des Projekts Pancheshwar. Die gewonnenen Daten aus den Messungen wurden analysieret und ausgewertet. Die Ergebnisse werden dabei vorgelegt. Sommaire Le champ de contraintes in-situ est un des paramèters principaux influencant l’exécution des structures souterraines particulierèment en Himalaya où les forces in-situ sont fortement influencées par les caractéristiques topographiques et géologiques de la région. La fracturation hydraulique est une technique qui permet de mesurer des forces in-situ des massifs rocheux. Cet article décrit brièvement le mécanisme de fracturation hydraulique et présente les résultats de mesure des forces in-situ des roches au site du projet hydroélectrique de Pancheswar.

Testwork at Goedehoop Colliery showed that fine coal, essentially?150 microns can be successfully beneficiated using froth flotation. Both conventional and column flotation were tested. It was found that the traditional stirred tank type of flotation machines used in conventional flotation produced the best recovery of fine coal. After extensive testwork it was decided to develop a flotation machine on Goedehoop Colliery that would combine stirred tank and quiescent column technology. It was thought that this design would give the best combination of recovery and selectivity. The Multicell was developed and is producing results acceptable for Witbank coal flotation. THE RIFLE, COLO., oil-shale project of the Bureau of Mines was a facet of the re-search and development activities conducted under the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (Public Law 78-290) of April 5, 1944. The principal objectives were to devise efficient methods to mine and retort oil shale and to refine shale oil into usable products, at a total cost low enough that shale oil could supplement the domestic supply of petroleum at competitive prices. The Rifle project included three major divisions: (1) Mining, (2) retorting, and (3) refining. The major functions of the mining program were to supply oil shale to the retorts, to devise mining procedures, and to develop an under-ground-mining method by which oil shale could be produced safely at an unusually low cost per ton. The selected mining procedures and direct mining costs were demonstrated by sustained test runs.

Ball Clay -- Four companies - H.C. Spinks Clay Co. Inc. (owned by Lhoist Group), Imerys Group (formerly Kentucky-Tennessee Clay Co.), Old Hickory Clay Co. and Unimin Corp. - mined ball clay in four states during 2010. Production, based on preliminary data, was 910 kt (1.11 million st) with an estimated value of $42.9 million. That was a 10-percent increase in tonnage from 831 kt (916 million st) with a value of $37.7 million that was produced in 2009. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 61 percent of domestic production. It was followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 70 percent of production was airfloat, 20 percent was crude and 10 percent was water-slurried.

Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) issues are very high profile currently in both Australian coal and metal mines and Australian states are generally moving to acknowledge and to broadly follow US 2008 final metal/non metal mine regulation limits of 0.2 mg/m3 submicron particulate matter, 0.16 mg/m3 total carbon particulate and 0.1 mg/m3 elemental carbon particulate. The real time DPM monitor is being developed on the base of the successful Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) unit. The objectives of recently completed Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) study has been to finalize the design of a DPM unit, to undertake comprehensive and internationally recognized laboratory testing to evaluate the new design and to undertake an underground series of tests to establish the robustness and reliability of the new approach. Under the project Thermo Fisher Scientific has undertaken structural changes to the PDM to convert it to a DPM real time monitoring underground instrument, the D-PDM. The Pennsylvania Pittsburgh Research Laboratories of NIOSH (the group that originally contracted for the PDM development) has undertaken laboratory ?calibration or verification? testing. A phase of Australian mine robustness and engineering testing has been undertaken to ensure the instrument can effectively assist mine management to handle this health issue. Tests have been undertaken at points of expected high atmospheric DPM such as during Longwall face moves, Development RAM car, Eimco and PJB usages. The paper discusses how the monitors have performed within the underground mine environment in evaluating DPM during the various phases of the production cycle. They have closely examined the influence of aspects of the mine ventilation system. Results have been compared to alternative industry pollutant measuring approaches. The outcome of the project gives the industry access to an enhanced tool for understanding the mine atmosphere in the presence of DPM. Real time DPM monitoring will allow the industry to pin-point high exposure zones such as those encountered in coal longwall face moves where various vehicles work or in areas of constrained or difficult ventilation. Identifying of high DPM concentration zones allows efficient modification of work practices to reduce underground miners? exposure. Some outcomes of the ACARP project in this area will be discussed.

Economic activity in the United States picked up in the third quarter, according to the latest estimate released by the Department of Commerce. Real gross national product (GNP)--the Nation's output of goods and services--grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.3%, or $17.6 billion, compared with a rate of 1.9% for the second quarter of 1985 and 1.6% for the third quarter of 1984 (table 1). The 4.3% rate is one percentage point above the preliminary estimate reported in the August/September issue of Minerals and Materials. Most of the upward revision was due to the change in business inventories and Government purchases, while the figure for net exports was revised downward substantially. The 4.3% growth bettered by 1.5% the average rate of growth in GNP from 1974 through 1984 and was 1.1 % above that of the period from 1975 through 1984 and 0.7% above that of 1980 through 1984. Of importance to the minerals industry was the $14.4-billion growth in personal consumption expenditures, $10.2 billion of which was for durable goods (especially domestically produced automobiles) and the growing residential investment. The net export deficit continued to grow, however, and investment in nonresidential structures, producers' durable equipment, and business inventories declined. Prices, as measured by the GNP fixed-weighted price index, increased at an annual rate of 3.1% in the third quarter, compared with 3.9% in the second quarter. The slower rate of inflation resulted mainly from a decline in energy prices, following second-quarter increases. Fourth-Quarter Prognosis Many of the economic data available for October and November indicate that the economy is growing modestly and will continue to grow over the next 3 to 6 months. The composite index of leading indicators, designed to predict economic activity within 3 to 6 months, rose 0.3% in October, the sixth consecutive monthly advance, according to the Department of Commerce. Six of the 11 available leading indicators were positive: Stock market prices rose, as did sensitive material prices, credit outstanding, and manufacturers' new orders for consumer goods and materials; initial claims for unemployment insurance decreased, and firms were getting slower delivery of goods. Four of the indicators were negative: Business formations, homebuilding permits, contracts and orders for plant and equipment, and money supply all declined. The average hours worked per week, already at a high level, remained unchanged.

To solve the problem of time-consuming and low precision in updating the open-pit vehicle transportation network, a high precision road network model construction method for unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines is proposed. This method can be divided into two steps. In the first step, an improved deep learning image processing model named DeepLabv3 + C (DeepLabv3 + Concat) is presented. Then, the road information extracted by the DeepLabv3 + C network is used to construct a three-dimensional model of the open-pit mine road network. In the second step, aiming at the time-consuming problem of unmanned vehicle meeting in open-pit mines, a vehicle meeting strategy was proposed. This strategy is used to guide the navigation of unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines. Besides, the DeepLabv3 + C network is verified by comparing the mIOU (means Intersection Over Union), accuracy, and continuity of road image extraction with the mainstream networks. The road network model constructed in the first step is quantitatively analyzed, and its performance is compared with GPS trajectory clustering methods. At the end of the paper, vehicle running simulation is carried out on the road network model by using Unity (a 3D visualization simulation software). The results show that the road network model constructed by this method can meet the navigation requirements of unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines, and the feasibility of the vehicle meeting strategy is proved.
