The Florida Department of Transportation, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is studying the feasibility of a 1128 meter (3,700 foot) vehicular tunnel to provide direct access for Port of Miami traffic to/from I-395, I-95, SR-836 (Dolphin Expressway) and Miami International Airport. Both Bored and Immersed Tube tunnels were evaluated and re-evaluated for constructing two, two-lane, 11.9 meter (39-foot) diameter tunnels beneath the Main Shipping Channel lying between Watson Island and the Port of Miami on Dodge Island in Biscayne Bay, Miami, Florida, USA. Bedrock Geology of South Florida is predominately very permeable, vuggy limestone with sand seams and occasional voids. Groundwater inflows in deep cut-and-cover excavations, tunnel buoyancy, grouting, maintenance of Port operations and potential/possible environmental impacts to Biscayne Bay were significant issues.

"High-grade concentrates are achieved in flotation columns primarily due to the use of thick froth layers and wash water, both of which facilitate the drainage of hydrophilic minerals from the froth. However, conventional columns employ tall, non-agitated recovery sections for bubble-particle attachment that require high headroom and special gas spargers as well as imposing particle size limitations. These disadvantages can be all alleviated by carrying out the recovery part of the process in a mechanical or pneumatic cell which generate froth more conveniently and efficiently.This paper describes the combining of mechanical and column flotation in a single unit and discusses the influence of various parameters on the performance of the system.INTRODUCTIONIn a flotation process, some of the minerals lifted up to the froth phase may drain back to the pulp due to various reasons such as weak attachment of particles to air bubbles, bursting of air bubbles, agitation of froth, etc. Weakly floating and entrained hydrophilic minerals drain at a faster rate than the strongly floating minerals, and effective exploitation of such differential drainage can lead to cleaner concentrates.For a given mineral, if the rate of flotation from pulp to froth is k1 (min·1) and the rate of drainage from froth to pulp is k2 (min""1), then the net (overall) flotation rate of the mineral, k (min-1 ), will be [Lynch et al., 1981 ]:"

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) has re-emerged as a major concern in the Australian coal mining industry. Harmful effects from coal dust inhalation have been well documented, but the underlying causes and mechanisms of CWP are still debatable. Research conducted in the USA has proposed a plausible link between the presence of pyrite in coal and the prevalence of CWP. Reactive pyrite in coal oxidises under ambient mine conditions to produce various iron sulfate minerals such as melanterite, rozenite, roemerite and szomolnokite. Rapid reaction rates are promoted by the form (size and morphology) of the reactive pyrite present, which provides both increased surface area and increased porosity for easy air access to reaction sites. The products formed from reactive pyrite oxidation are often needle-like crystals with thicknesses in the order of 1–2 µm (eg melanterite and rozenite) and prismatic crystals with thicknesses less than 5 µm (eg roemerite) have been recorded. The densities of these minerals are significantly less than quartz, which makes them prone to becoming airborne with the normal coal dust. In fact, the mix of these mineral salts is commonly referred to as ‘fairy dust’ by mine workers due to the way they can become entrained and sparkle in the mine ventilation air, particularly if they occur in the upper part of a seam that is forming a coal roof. Examples are presented of the various products of reactive pyrite oxidation found in three Australian coal samples, which provide evidence of the physical and chemical mechanisms that would support the USA findings, particularly in terms of a source of bioavailable iron leading to increased inflammatory stress response.CITATION:Beamish, B B, Ward, C R and Chalmers, D, 2017. Fifteen shots of three explosives with charge weights of 0.52, 1.1, 3.1, and 5.1 kilograms were fired in a pond to study the seismic effects of detonating explosives in water. Shock pressures and bubble periods were measured with pressure transducers in the water. Vibrations were measured on land in three orthogonal directions with particle velocity gages. Statistical tests indicated that a charge weight exponent of 0.43 best scaled the data. While shock pressures and bubble periods showed considerable differences in explosive performances, the amplitudes of ground vibrations showed less difference, and one prediction equation was therefore derived to estimate vibration amplitudes from all the explosives.

In the production of high silicon alloys, carbonaceous materials like coal, coke, charcoal and woodchips are utilized as reducing agents. Primarily based on historical prices of charcoal compared to fossil reduction materials, the Norwegian Ferroalloy Industry has mostly been using coal and coke (char) as carbon source. The most important role of the carbonaceous material is to react with the SiO gas to produce SiC. The ability of the reduction materials to bind SiO gas can be measured and the value is recognised as the reactivity of the carbon source. This reactivity is one of the most important parameters in the smelting process in order to obtain a high yield of metal. The reactivity of the carbon materials is directly correlated to the material properties. It is known that the rank of the coal influences the SiO reactivity where low rank is beneficial. Coals of the same rank have however proven to have varying reactivity. In order to investigate how the micro-constituents of coal influence the reactivity towards SiO gas, three single seam unwashed coals of different origin which fulfil the requirements of the Norwegian Ferroalloy producers have been chosen. As the structure in the carbonized product is a function of petrographic constitution and carbonization parameters, the coals have been separated into different density fractions. The various density fractions of the same coals proved to have significantly different petrographic composition. The coals were carbonized according to a procedure simulating the conditions the coals experience when charged to an industrial furnace. Chemical-, physical- and petrographical properties of both the coals and the resultant chars have been thoroughly examined and correlated towards the SiO reactivity.

"It is widely accepted that the type of grinding media has an impact on the grinding chemistry and subsequent flotation behaviour of the sulphide minerals being separated. There are countless laboratory investigations demonstrating that inert grinding media produces more oxidising pulp potentials, reduced levels of grinding media corrosion products and superior concentrate grades and valuable metal recoveries. However, taking these results to industrial scale has proven difficult.Work conducted at the Ernest Henry Mine, in north western Queensland, Australia, at laboratory and pilot plant scale clearly indicated that using a high chrome grinding media resulted in significant improvements in both copper and gold recoveries. However, advancing this work to plant trial represented considerable financial and technical risk to the mine.This paper provides details of the protocol developed and used during the high chrome grinding media plant trial. It describes the test regime employed to measure changes in pulp chemistry, and the statistical methodology utilised to interpret the results. The work also highlighted the need for close cooperation between the metallurgists on site and the researchers conducting the trial.To date, the trial has produced excellent results: indicating that the copper recovery has improved by about 2 percent. The successful application of high chrome grinding media to the Ernest Henry ore has increased metal value by $18.7 million USD per annum based on current spot price for copper.INTRODUCTIONTheoryThe application of electrochemically inert grinding media to mineral systems has been extensively studied (Table 1). "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Over the last decade (2005–2014), a total of 439 significant deposits of gold and base metals were found in the world. Twenty (or 4.6 per cent) of these deposits were in the Pacific/South-East Asia (Pacific/SE Asia) region. In terms of contained metal, the region accounted for 1.6 per cent of gold and 13.8 per cent of copper found in the world. With regard to nickel and zinc/lead, the region’s contributions were insignificant.Over the same period, the Pacific/SE Asia region accounted for 6.6 per cent and 12.6 per cent of all gold and copper exploration expenditures in the world respectively. After adjusting for by-product credits, unreported discoveries and likely growth in resource, the unit discovery cost for the region was US$199/oz (compared to a world average of US$50/oz). For comparison, the unit discovery costs for the previous decade were US$55/oz and US$25/oz respectively. The region’s unit discovery cost for copper was US$0.036/lb (versus a world average of US$0.040). For comparison, the unit discovery costs for the previous decade were US$0.026/lb and US$0.008/lb Cu respectively.The region’s mediocre discovery performance doesn’t reflect its distribution of known mineralisation. Some countries within the region have a very good endowment per square kilometre.It is noted that the intensity of exploration (and resulting success) would be boosted if governments provided a more mining- and investment-friendly business environment and generated better precompetitive geological data sets (to identify new exploration targets and boost the country’s perceived mineral prospectivity). A multivariable regression analysis of a decade of data from the Fraser Institute’s mining company surveys found that a ten point increase in the Policy Perception Index or a 0.1 point increase in the Mineral Potential Index could boost (in the short term) exploration expenditures by 1.9 per cent and 2.7 per cent respectively. As part of a $2.2 Billion bridge project that will link Indiana and Kentucky, an interchange project northeast of Louisville will require the mining of a 6-lane tunnel system about 2,000 ft long in order to cross beneath the historic Drumanard Estate. This paper will discuss preliminary engineering that has been undertaken to compare two-bore and three-bore layouts, the planning of an exploratory tunnel facility, and the potential for including a test chamber to investigate the ability of high capacity roadheaders to mine the 22,000 psi limestones.

The Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are two distinct, shallow-dipping stratiform tabular orebodies which strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 300 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely employed to support the open stopes. In the deeper levels, in-stope pillars are required to fail in a stable manner soon after being cut, and the residual pillar strength is used to stabilize the hanging wall. These pillars are commonly known as crush pillars. Little work has been done in the past to determine pillar peak and residual strengths, and pillars have been designed using experience and formulae developed for other hard-rock mines. This has led to over and undersize pillars with consequential loss of ore, pillar bursts and potential collapses. This paper describes a crush pillar design methodology, and provides design charts. Three mining environments were incorporated in the investigations, which included underground and laboratory measurements, analytical solutions, numerical model sand back analyses. The results of the study are suitable for the areas where the research was carried out, and may also be applied with caution in other similar environments.

An increase in the importance of low-grade materials as sources of gold and silver has led to the need for improved analytical methods on leach solutions, ores and various effluents, residues, and in-process streams. These are required by plant operators as guides to process control and for accounting pldrposes. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) and AAS preceded by pre- concentration have been applied successfully to resolve many such problems. However, AAS is no panacea and imprecision or loss of accuracy can result if adequate precautions are not taken to prevent losses and eliminate interferences. The recent methods are discussed together with methods for overcoming difficulties. Comparisons with more classical analytical techniques are also given.

"INTRODUCTION The Park City district, situated 30 miles east of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the Wasatch Mountains, Is a well-known producer of lead, zinc, and precious metals. Nearly continuous production has been maintained from the dis¬trict since its early discovery about 1870. For approximately 50 years, gravity milling methods were employed to beneficiate Park City ore, and during that time tailings from the mills were sluiced down Silver Creek and deposited on lands below the camp for 7 miles.Owing to the large tonnage of tailings deposited along Silver Creek, considerable work was done in the past in the attempt to develop a low-cost concentration method for re-treating this material, but no-method was found that was economically feasible. The Bureau of Mines was asked to conduct beneficiation tests on Park City tailings in November 1944, and metallurgical studies were initiated at that time. This report summarizes the results of laboratory ore-dressing studies made on samples from the Grasselli deposit."

There are three researches upon the specific heat of water vapor by the method of explosion that are sufficiently advanced in technique and suitable in plan to justify careful study of their results , with the double purpose of fixing the best available experimental values and indicating the attainable accuracy of the method. These three researches comprise the work of Pier , Bjerrum , and Siegel.5 The work of earlier date than Pier's suffers from obvious inaccuracy of measurement , while the experiments more recent than Siegel's , such as those of Womersley6 , of Bone and his collaborators , and of Maxwell and Wheeler , 8 are for the most part not well designed for the accurate determination of the heat capacities in question . Some of the errors to which they are especially subject have been discussed by David and by David and Thorp.

The opportunity to make a close study of the available geologic data existing along the line of the California Aqueduct crossing of the Garlock fault in the Tehachapi Mountains was brought about first by my involvement in the prebid examinations, and later with contractors' claim cases. The California Aqueduct crosses through the western end of the Tehachapi Mountains and cuts across the Garlock fault zone at a location about 9 miles east from its junction with the San Andreas fault zone. This is about 65 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 38 miles southeast of Bakersfield (Fig. 1) (1). This map was published after the tunnels were started and shows the corrected geology. At the crossing the fault has north and south branches which extend northeastward for about 22 miles before converging. In the vicinity immediately east of the tunnel line the north branch of the fault starts to converge toward the west. After crossing the line it passes under the upper plate of the apparent easterly extension of the Pastoria thrust fault, so the actual junction with the south branch is obscured. The aqueduct design called for the expected active slip zone of the north Garlock fault branch to be crossed by the 2,800 foot long Pastoria siphon, which connects with the north portal of Tehachapi Tunnel No. 3. The tunnel would extend through the western end of Genghus Ridge which lies between the north branch and the main south Garlock fault zone in Beartrap Canyon. Here again the

"Lakeshore Gold’s Bell Creek Mill is located in Timmins, Ontario. The mill has been in operation since 2009 and has undergone several small expansions since then. In 2012 - 2013 the first major mill expansion was commissioned raising the mill capacity from 2,000tpd to 3,150tpd. This was done through the installation of a new ROM ore truck dumping facility, jaw crusher, ore storage dome, SAG mill, leach tank, CIL tank, and electrowinning cell. This paper will cover the equipment installed to raise the tonnage as well as the commissioning of the new equipment including problems encountered and how these problems were solved.IntroductionLake Shore Gold acquired the Bell Creek Mill, along with the Bell Creek Mine, from the Porcupine Gold Mines Joint Venture, a joint venture between Goldcorp Canada Ltd. and Kinross Gold Corporation, in December 2007.The Bell Creek mill, which processed ore from the Bell Creek Mine has consistently achieved recoveries of over 95%, is a conventional gold mill circuit, involving crushing and two stage ball mill grinding, gravity and leaching, followed by Carbon-In-Pulp (CIP) process for gold recovery. The facility had been placed on care and maintenance in 2002. At the beginning of 2009, the mill had been refurbished with an initial capacity of 800 tonnes per day and was subsequently refurbished to a capacity of 1,500 tonnes per day near the end of the third quarter of that year. The Mill was then expanded in 2010 to a capacity of 2,000 tonnes per day.In late 2011, the Company commenced a 50% expansion of its milling facility, from a processing capacity of 2,000 tonnes per day to 3,150 tonnes per day. Phase 1 of the expansion, which mainly involved enhancements to the solution circuit (“back end”) and increased the mill’s capacity to 2,500 tonnes per day, was completed at the end of 2012. Commissioning of Phase 2 of the expansion, to a capacity of 3,150 tonnes per day, commenced at the end of July 2013."

This paper reports hardness and abrasive wear resistance test results from a wide range of WC-Co alloys, varying in cobalt content as well as WC grain size. The results show that the abrasive wear resistance increases with increasing hardness and that the rate of increase is higher for larger WC grain sizes. The increase in abrasive wear resistance was found to be parabolic up to a critical hardness value and exponential above that value. The transition from parabolic to exponential behaviour was found to occur at the same contiguity value for all grain sizes, which suggests that at that contiguity value the WC skeleton becomes continuous in all WC-Co alloys.

Bulk materials handling systems are extensively used in the mining and minerals industry, where a fairly high incidence of structural failure is experienced, notwithstanding design compliance with appropriate standards. A number of case studies are explored to demonstrate how insufficient controls or protection systems have contributed to structural failures on mobile bulk handling equipment. The importance of design integration across engineering disciplines is highlighted. The revision of ISO 5049-1 (1994) is proposed to provide specific rules and guidelines pertaining to machine protection systems. It is further recommended that the structural design engineer of the original equipment manufacturer(OEM) fulfils a more prominent role during the final acceptance and handover of mobile bulk handling equipment, with specific reference to protection systems.

Backfilling increases the stability of underground stopes and may help reduce the environmental footprint from the mining operation. The barricades holding the backfill in place must be designed to prevent failure based on the total and effective stress states, which depend on fill properties, stope geometry, and filling rate. This paper presents results from a numerical study aimed at analyzing the stress states associated with the response of paste backfill following stope filling, with an emphasis on the short term behavior. The simulations illustrate how stresses evolve with backfill drainage and filling rate in a vertical stope.
