More than 111,350 mining and construction industry professionals from throughout the world gathered in Las Vegas, NV, March 19-23 for ConExpo-Con/Agg 2002 and IFPE 2002. The triennial event is the Western Hemisphere’s largest equipment show for the quarrying, aggregates, construction and ready-mixed concrete industries. Despite the difficulties in the world economy, ConExpo-Con/Agg 2002 attracted more than 2,450 exhibitors from throughout the world. This was an increase from the 1,882 exhibitors that were on hand for the 1999show. And this year’s show occupied more than 180,225m2 (1.94 million sq ft) of exhibit space at the Las Vegas Convention Center. This was an increase from the160,900 m2 (1.73-million sq ft) occupied at the 1999event.

Currently in Canada there are 15 major mining companies with a minimum of $1 billion in market capitalization or net private value. This group forms the core of an important sector for Canada. The mining sector had gross revenues of about $35 billion in 1988. This compares to a Canadian GDP of $410 billion in 1988. There are at least three different sub-groups within the mining group, each facing the future with very different prospects for the coming years.

"Abstract The Gudrun field is located west of Stavanger in the North Sea at water depth of 109 m. A jacket substructure was selected to support the topside and was installed in 2011. The jacket shall be able to support 16 of 0.762 m (30 in) diameter conductors and is equipped with a drilling deck to allow for pre-drilling by a jack-up rig through the jacket. In general the soil conditions below mudline comprise of a thin top layer of very loose to dense sand overlaying several layers of sandy clay, ranging in stiffness from firm to hard. Below some 30 m depth the soil consists of layers of medium dense to dense silty sand overlaying very hard sandy clay containing thick beds of sand to 100 m depth or more below mudline. The jacket is secured to the seabed by twelve 2.438 m (96 in) diameter steel pipe piles, three at each pile cluster located at the four legs of the jacket at sea floor. Different design methods were used to determine the pile penetration depth. Pile drivability was evaluated using best estimate and upper bound soil parameters. The pile driving and blow count record show that the target penetration was reached as predicted. This paper discusses the different methods used to determine the pile capacity, target penetration depth and the drivability analyses made for the Gudrun jacket piles. The soil resistance during pile driving is back-calculated from the pile installation data and compared with the prediction made.IntroductionThe Gudrun platform is located west of Stavanger in the North Sea at water depth of 109 m. The general Gudrun platform jacket configuration is to a large extent dictated by the topside layout, the requirements for support points enclosing the well slots and access for the jack-up rig. The Gudrun platform jacket is a traditional 4 legged structure with a vertical side towards the jack-up rig. At the seabed the jacket is quadratic with a base dimension of 40 by 40 metres. Figure 1 shows the Gudrun jacket during load-out from the fabrication yard to the transport barge. At the site the jacket was lifted off the barge, upended and placed on the seabed by the installation vessel. The jacket is secured to the seabed by twelve 96"" (2.438 m) diameter steel pipe piles, three at each pile cluster located at the four legs of the jacket at sea floor. The target penetration of the piles is 47 m."

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the technology of petroleum and its products, the investigation including well-drilling methods and the transportation, treatment, and utilization of petroleum and of natural gas, with especial reference to the prevention of waste and to increased efficiencyin the development of oil and gas resources in land belonging to or controlled by the Government. During. the winter of 1912-13 the enormous waste of the gas encountered while drilling for oil in the Cushing field, Oklahoma, called forth protests from various sources, and appeal was made to the President of the United States and to the Secretary of the Interior in behalf of the landowner and of the public in general. The facts were wanted regarding the amount of waste and the technical conditions that were responsible for practices causing it. An investigation was ordered and conducted under the direct supervision of the late J. A. Holmes, the first Director of the Bureau of Mines. R. S.Blatchley was sent to investigate the amount of waste going on in the Mid-Continent flelds.s In the latter part of March, 1913, J. A. Pollard and A. G. Heggem were sent to Oklahoma to study well-drilling methods with reference to the waste of gas from wells on Indian lands and to suggest means of preventing the waste of natural gas on such lands. Pollard and Heggem decided that the mud-laden fluid process, which had been used successfully for some years in Texas, Louisiana, and California was the method that would meet the situation most efficiently and economically. The method was accordingly demonstrated in Oklahoma. In 1914 Congress provided for the employment of six oil and gas inspectors to supervise oil and gas mining operations on lands of the Five Civilized Tribes in Oklahoma and to conduct investigations with a view to the prevention of waste. Positions under this appropriation have been held by William F. McMurray, James O. Lewis, Harry D. Aggers, Ralph R. "Weed,George W. McPherson, James C. Fowler, Louis W. Courtney, and Carl H. Beal, the technical work of these men being directed "byW. A. Williams, chief of the petroleum division, Bureau of Mines. After careful and impartial investigation of conditions in Oklahoma, these men also decided that the mud-laden fluid process was the one best adapted to prevent further wastes. In 1915 laws were passed by the State of Oklahoma that provide for the conservation of natural gas and oil, authority being given to the corporation commission to make rules and regulations and to employ agents to enforce them. After hearings and investigations, the corporation commission reached substantially the same conclusions as the Federal agents regarding the importance of the wastes and the best methods of conserving the gas. Technical Papers 66a and 68b were published by the Bureau of Mines in December, 1913, and January, 1914, respectively. Technical Paper 66 deals with the mud-laden fluid process in general and No. 68 with its application in Oklahoma. The interest aroused by these publications has been so widespread that within two years the first editions have been practically exhausted. Rather than reprint these publications, it has been considered advisable to replace them with the present report, which includes the results of more recent investigations. The methods of using the mud-laden fluid are an outgrowth of the rotary drilling system, which was developed in Texas and later employed in Louisiana and California. Some of the principles of the use of mud fluid had been observed and used to a limited extent for a long time in cable-tool drilling. So far as known it was first used successfully with a circulator and cable tools in the Coalinga field, California, in 1906,Harry D. Aggers, one of the contributors to this paper, working on the well. The part of the Bureau of Mines has been to call attention to its merits and to demonstrate its practical use in fields like those of the Mid-Continent.

A large lab apparatus was designed using a scale-down methodology based on the design legacy of the current FLSmidth commercial forced air flotation machines. This new apparatus, along with a new test methodology, was used to evaluate new rapid prototype concepts. The apparatus was designed to monitor bubble size, power, pumping capacity, Jg, velocity profiles, froth character, and tip speed. The methodology developed follows a sequence that goes from hydrodynamic tests and solids suspension tests to a flotation kinetic test. This methodology has been demonstrated to be a good tool to determine the effect of machine design changes on flotation.

Cement production in Australia approximates 6.5 million tonnes per year. Cement clinker is sourced from 15 plants which operate 28 kilns. Cement grinding is conducted at 14 of the clinker plants plus 7 grinding plants. Average annual capacity per kiln or plant is lower than in many overseas countries, but kilns introduced since 1970's have been of larger size more in keeping with size trends overseas, although still smaller than the large units overseas. Substantial economies in capital and labour costs can be achieved in large production units, particularly with dry process kilns using precalcination techniques in which part of the fuel is introduced in the static preheater section ahead of the kiln while the balance is added to the kiln in a conventional manner. Precalcination techniques have been introduced to the Australian cement industry but as cement transport costs form a major part of supplying diverse market areas, the size of kilns is likely to remain less than maximum owing to balance with distribution costs. The cement industry uses significant amounts of thermal and electrical energy which can be minimised by proper selection of equipment and technology. Labour costs are also significant and can be contained by automation and computer control of the process.

The objectives of this research were to define the chemical composition and physical characteristics of the aerosols associated with attached radon daughters in operating uranium mines, and to investigate the relationship between these aerosol parameters and operating conditions. Major Results and Conclusions The organic, inorganic and radiological characteristics of test chamber and active U-mine aerosols have been measured as a function of particle size. These measurements represent the first detailed analyses of the organic and inorganic components in U-mine aerosols and the first determinations of the details of the individual and total radon daughter distributions in operating U-mines. This summary of international mineral exploration activities for 2008 draws upon available information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry, and presents analyses of exploration activities by the mineral industry based upon these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for 2008: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia (Metals Economics Group, 2008a, b), and 2) information on regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2008 and compiled by the USGS. The MEG information summarizes planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2008, primarily for precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver) and base metals (copper, lead, nickel and zinc). MEG includes information on additional mineral commodities only where it is available. Information on uranium exploration was included in the MEG overview for the first time in 2007, although this information was not included in the USGS analysis. The MEG survey methodology was changed in 1999 to include companies with exploration budgets between $100,000 and $2.9 million, as well as those companies included in prior studies whose anticipated budgets were above $2.9 million. MEG estimates that its post-1999 surveys cover at least 90 percent of world nonferrous nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 2008 survey is reported by MEG to cover an estimated 95 percent. Companies that chose not to participate in the MEG study, private companies that do not publish data, and government-funded exploration activities make up the majority of the remaining 5 percent. MEG included 91 more companies in its 2008 survey than it did in 2007 USGS compilations of site data described here primarily include nonfuel minerals, with an emphasis on base metals, diamond and precious metals. Analyses are based on information provided by USGS mineral commodity and country specialists and by other USGS scientists, as well as industry contacts and trade journals.

Nepheline syenite is a silica deficient crystalline rock consisting of albite and microcline feldspars and nepheline, together with varying but small amounts of mafic silicates and other accessory minerals. Nepheline-bearing rocks are widely distributed around the world but only in Canada, Norway, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and the United States are deposits worked commercially. Because of its low melting point and fluxing ability, nepheline syenite was investigated in the early 1900s by many students of glass and ceramics. Although the nepheline syenite deposits in Methuen Township, Ont., Canada, were discovered as early as 1897 it wasn't until 1935 that the first mill was erected to produce nepheline syenite products. In Canada, nepheline syenite deposits are worked by Indusmin Ltd. and International Minerals and Chemical Corp. (Canada) Ltd. who have combined production capacity in excess of 1800 tpd. Between 1935 and 1972 seven million tons valued at $78 million were produced from the Methuen Township deposits. In Norway, the Norsk Nefelin Div. of Elkem Spigerverket has produced nepheline syenite from a deposit on Stjernoy Island in western Finnmark since early 1960. Between 1961 and 1972 the company produced 930,000 mt with an estimated value of $17 million. Nepheline syenite has been under investigation in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) since at least 1928. In 1951 the first commercial alumina works was brought on stream at Volkhov, near Leningrad, utilizing nepheline concentrates from the Kola peninsula as mill feed. Since then two others have been completed and more are planned. Large quantities of portland cement, sodium carbonate, and potassium carbonate are produced in conjunction with the alumina. In the United States, nepheline syenite has been produced for many years from deposits in central Arkansas by the Big Rock Stone and Materials Co. for construction aggregates and, since 1947, for roofing granules by the 3M Co. Chap. 16 on "Feldspar, Nepheline Syenite, and Aplite" in the 3rd ed. of Industrial Minerals and Rocks (Castle, and Gillson, 1960) and Nepheline Syenite Deposits of Southern Ontario (Hewitt, 1960) contain excellent accounts of earlier commercial development of nepheline syenite as a glass and ceramic material. Therefore this chapter deals mostly with the period since 1960 and with matters not previously reported in detail. An English monograph on Nepheline-Syenite and Phonolite (Allen et al., 1968) is a complete current survey of nepheline syenite which, with its very complete list of references. is an excellent source book. End Uses Nepheline syenite from the Canadian and Norwegian producers finds use primarily in the manufacture of glass and ceramics. One producer also makes several grades of nepheline syenite that are useful as extender pigments and fillers in paint, plastics, and rubber. In the Soviet Union nepheline is used in increasing quantities in the manufacture of alumina, alkali carbonates, and portland cement and to a lesser degree it is used in the manufacture of colored container glass.

"The number of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (“HPGRs”, also called Roller Press) installations instead of tertiary crushers is rapidly increasing. The technology has been largely accepted in the minerals industry and benefits, such as superior energy efficiency and a lower overall operating cost compared to alternative technologies, have been demonstrated at a number of operations throughout the world.This paper focuses on coarse hard ore operations and reviews the successful installation of the first Roller Press installed instead of a tertiary crusher at the Los Colorados Plant of CMH (Chile) in 1998. It details the experience obtained over the past ten years of operation from commissioning to the present day. It highlights examples of further developments made in the design to improve machine maintainability and availability as well as wear life of the grinding surfaces.A second focus lies on procedures to derive from small scale testing material properties such as wear life, flake formation and strength and their application to industrial size machines to optimize circuit design, especially when Roller Presses are used in closed circuit with screening.INTRODUCTIONRoller Presses (also known as HPGR, High Pressure Grinding Rolls) are considered today state of the art for the preparation of pellet feed. They are also gaining wide acceptance in coarse ore operations. One of the first successful operations in which a roller press was used to replace a conventional tertiary and quaternary crusher is the Los Colorados plant of CMH in Chile.When the Roller Press at Los Colorados was commissioned in 1988, there were 169 Humboldt Wedag roller presses in operation throughout the world. Of these, 14 were installed in the minerals industry. However, these were installed mainly for grinding pellet feed to increase the Blaine value. Up to that time, only three KHD roller presses had been applied for crushing coarse ore in specialized circuits. Moreover, the installation at Los Colorados was the first Roller Press ever to replace a conventional tertiary and quaternary crusher in a hard ore application."

Polyacrylamide flocculating agent has been used in the Leaching Division 'of the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited since October, 1960. The number of thickeners in the continuous thickening stage was thereby reduced from eight to three. There has been an increase of 25 per cent in throughput and a reduction of solids in thickener over-flow from 3-4 g/l. solids to 0·5 g Ir. solids. Reagent addition has been at the rate of 0·25 lb Separan NP10 per ton solids.Additionally there has been a gain of 3 per cent in current efficiency as the direct result of the addition of Separan NP10 to purified cadmium sulphate solution priOl; to electrolysis for cadmium metal. A smoother deposit has resulted and it has been possible to increase deposition time between strippings from 47 to 71 hr. However, there has been a slight increase in the lead content of the cadmium metal produced.The use of Separan NP10 to settle copper bearing residue in a batch process stage has resulted in a five-fold increase in settlement rate and a reduction in purification cycle time.INTRODUCTIONThe Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, Risdon, Tasmania, produces zinc by electrolysis of purified zinc sulphate solution, the raw material being zinc sulphide concentrate. In the Risdon process (Van Arsdale, 1953; J ohnstone, 1953; Ross, 1949) the compound zinc ferrite (ZnO.Fe203) is formed during the concentrate roasting stage. When the roasted material is leached in dilute sulphuric acid the zinc ferrite is not attacked, and it remains as part of the insoluble leach residue, of which it may form as much as two-thirds of the whole. In accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, and the Linde Air Products Co., an investigation was made at the Bureau Explosives Testing Station, Bruceton, Pa., to develop suitable test methods for evaluating the performance and sensitivity characteristics of liquid-oxygen explosives. This report presents the results of the investigation. The unique nature of liquid-oxygen explosives necessitated both modification of standard techniques and development of entirely new test methods. The latter requirement was due to the fact that differences exist in the kind of information that must be developed for studying relative safety and performance properties of these explosives compared to that of fixed explosives.

Support system design for tunnels and underground excavations has for many years relied heavily on the use of rock mass classification systems and the Hoek-Brown failure criterion as a means for characterizing rock mass behaviour. Because of their development, both the GSI system and the Hoek-Brown criterion admirably characterize most ?normal? rockmasses from the viewpoint of their behaviour for rock excavations. They, however, run into difficulties when applied at the two ends of the rock competence scale. This is largely because block size and incipient strength are such that rockmass behaviour in these domains tends not to be controlled by interblock shear strength but rather by material strength. At the low end of the rock competence scale (UCSi <<15 MPa and GSI generally <30) discontinuities play less of a role and rock mass strength tends to matrix strength. Similarly, at the high end of the scale (GSI >>65, mi>>15), because discontinuities are now widely spaced, block size becomes so significant that again, intact material behaviour rather than the fracturing becomes the dominant factor controlling rock mass strength. In this paper several case examples are presented to illustrate the application of the high-end (spalling) and low-end (weak ground) transition Hoek-Brown relationships proposed by Carter, Diederichs and Carvalho (2007) as a basis for better defining rockmass behaviour at the extreme ends of the rock competence scale.

This paper describes a simple finite element (FE) modelling approach which leads to the computation of seismic energy release rate (ERR) and strain energy storage rate (ESR) which result from mining. The concept of critical strain energy is introduced as a means to help evaluate the strainburst potential in mine structures. A new, energy-based, burst potential index (BPI) is proposed. The use of ERR, ESR and BPI is demonstrated by a cut-and-fill stope case study. The merits of using such energy parameters in the interpretation and analysis of strainburst phenomena are discussed. While the study gives promising results, site-specific back analyses would be required to first calibrate the model and fit it with the local mine conditions, before it can be adopted as a routine design tool.

RÉSUMÉ La restauration du site minier Poirier, à Joutel s?est déroulée entre 1998 et 2001. Le principal élément des travaux a été la restauration du parc à résidus et des zones d?épanchement qui totalisaient 4,5 millions tonnes de résidus répartis sur une superficie de 74 hectares. Les résidus sont fortement générateurs de drainage minier acide. La première partie de la présentation consiste en un bref rappel du concept de restauration suivi d?une description des principaux éléments de travaux avec l?emphase sur les leçons apprises de l?exécution des travaux. La deuxième partie de la présentation est axée sur les résultats du programme de suivi en cours depuis la fin des travaux en 2001. Les éléments de suivi se rapportent à la baisse du niveau de la nappe phréatique à l?intérieur de la cellule, au tassement des résidus dans la cellule, aux mesures de température et d?oxygène à l?intérieur de la cellule et finalement à l?amélioration dans la qualité de l?eau de surface. ABSTRACT The reclamation of Poirier Mine, in Joutel, was carried out between 1998 and 2001. The main component of the works has been the reclamation of the tailings basin and tailings spill area which contained a total of 4,5 million tonnes of tailings and occupied some 74 hectares of ground surface. The mine tailings are highly acid-generating. The first part of the presentation will deal with a brief review of the reclamation plan followed by a short description of the main work components laying emphasis on experience gained during construction. The second part of the presentation will deal with the results obtained from the environmental monitoring program still in progress since the end of reclamation work in 2001. The aspects discussed include the drawdown of pore water inside the covered tailing pile, the settlement of mine waste material, the monitoring of moisture, temperature and oxygen underneath the liner and finally, the reduction of loadings in surface water.

The young field of nanotechnology has as its objective the design and construction of useful devices made of nanoscale materials. Objects or structures which have at least one important dimension in the range 0.5 to perhaps 50 nm may be considered to be in the nanoscale domain. These sizes lie far below the 200 nm or so that can be resolved with an optical microscope, and are closer in size to the 0.3 nm diameter of individual atoms. Nanotechnology, which is the study and exploitation of these tiny structures, is attracting keen interest at present. The excitement is motivated by the observation that control of matter at the nanoscale holds the promise of faster computing, better medicines, and smarter materials. In this paper, the physical phenomena on which this optimism is based are broadly discussed and explained. Where appropriate, examples of the rather different and curious properties of gold at the nanoscale are used to illustrate the points covered.

From the Saranac Laboratory for the Study of Tuberculosis of the Edward L., Trudeau Foundation, Saranac Lake, New York:We are assembled to honor the memory of our friend and colleague, Donald Cummings, one of the founders and a past president of the American Industrial Hygiene Association. I deem it an Unusual privilege to have been asked to give this first memorial lecture and hope that what shall have to say may be worthy of the occasion. It is fitting that we should discuss here the subject of Silicosis to which he devoted such a large part of his life and it is doubly fitting, I think, that I should report to you an extended series of investigations carried on by his associates at the Saranac Laboratory.The subject of silicosis may seem hackneyed to this audience which is so familiar with the tried and accepted methods of prevention and control.But in spite of our efforts, the condition is still with us and unfortunately is still being produced in many places. In industries that now maintain good control of dust, fresh cases are appearing on annual re-examination, whose major exposure date back to the days before the hazard was recognized.A few new employees, with apparently ineffective upper respiratory protection against inhaled dust, develop silicosis precociously in environments that are comparatively harmless to their fellows. In plants that have relaxed their vigilance under the urgency of war production schedules, conditions again prevail that will produce, disease in the future.Silicosis acquired new interest with the announcement by Denny, Robson and Irwin(1) in 1937 that it could be prevented by the inhalation of powdered metallic aluminium. It so happened that without knowledge of their work, we at the Saranac Laboratory had for some months been conducting similar experiments with one of the hydroxides of aluminium.Quite independently we discovered that hydrated alumina would also protect animals against quartz. Our approach to the problem had been empirical; we were trying to neutralize quartz particles by coating their surfaces with an insoluble material following the lead of Kettle who in 1932 had shown that this could be accomplished with iron. Accurate evaluation of stress and geological conditions is critical to ground control design in underground openings. For a slope entry, the problem is more difficult because a slope will transverse through many different types of strata. Over the past three years, Keystone Mining Services, LLC, an affiliate company of Jennmar Corporation, has developed a new methodology designated the ?Stress, Geologic, and Support Design System (SGSsm)?. This patent pending method analyzes the stress, geology, and support design for a mine slope. It has been successfully applied in various new slopes across the United States. This paper will detail the main concepts of the methodology including: (1) Analysis of stress and geology and identification of strong, fair and weak zones along the slope; (2) Primary and supplemental support design; (3) Long term support design in the form of steel square sets or arches, and (4) Validation of the support design utilizing advanced finite element computer modeling.
