"Under certain conditions of moisture and oxygen, sulphides can spontaneously heat, a phenomenon known as self-heating. In this paper, we test a hypothesis that galvanic interaction between some sulphides can promote self-heating. Galvanic interaction is controlled by restpotential difference between minerals and their surface area of contact (particle size). In order to decrease rest-potential, four sulphides were tested: pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. Two series of samples consisting of mixtures of two sulphides, each representing a mass fraction of 50 %, were run in standard self-heating tests. The first series comprised five mixtures, two with low rest-potential difference (pyrite-chalcopyrite and chalcopyrite-sphalerite) and three with high rest-potential difference (pyrite-galena, chalcopyrite-galena and pyrite-sphalerite). The second series was performed on a pyrite-sphalerite mixture at four particle sizes (80 % passing 850 µm, 300 µm, 75 µm and 38 µm). The first series showed that the individual sulphides and the mixtures of low rest-potential difference did not self-heat but the mixtures of high rest-potential difference did self-heat. The second series showed that self-heating increased inversely with particle size (increased specific surface area) and revealed that it was the fineness of the pyrite (high rest-potential sulphide) that governed the self-heating effect, indicating the rate-limiting step is the reduction reaction on pyrite (cathodic mineral). The increase in self-heating with high rest-potential difference and increasing particle fineness supports the hypothesis that galvanic interaction contributes to sulphide self-heating. A possible mechanism based on the hydrogen sulphide hypothesis is proposed where the reduction reaction at the cathodic mineral surface is ferric to ferrous. The understanding gained will be of interest to those involved in storage, shipping and disposal of sulphide minerals.INTRODUCTIONSulphide mineral ores are the major source of most base metals such as copper, zinc, nickel and lead. Once the ore is extracted, the sulphide minerals are liberated by size reduction (crushing and grinding), concentrated by flotation, and the concentrates sent for further processing to extract the metal (smelting and refining). At the various stages from mining to concentrate shipment and tailings storage, the sulphides are exposed to a variety of environments, which under certain conditions of air (oxygen), humidity and temperature can cause them to heat. Since no external heat source is involved, this pyrophoric process is known as spontaneous heating or, more commonly, self-heating. The self-heating of sulphides is associated with oxidation reactions under moist conditions. If the heat generated is greater than the heat dissipated, the sulphides will self-heat and the material temperature will rise. This can make working conditions potentially dangerous as oxygen is consumed from the surrounding air and significant quantities of sulphur dioxide (SO2) can be released (Ninteman, 1978)."

These parameters undergo almost immediate change due to site specific ore requirements, throughput changes, operator requirements or reagent availability.Activated charcoal is sometimes viewed as simple, uncomplicated reagent that requires not optimization. To some extent, this statement is true, but under most circumstances, if the time necessary to optimize the use of activated charcoal is available, the effort is rewarded with significant savings. CPL-Carbon Link has embarked upon a program of supplying technical support with its activated charcoal. Several operations in the United States have undertaken to have CPL-Carbon Link do an operational survey to determine if potential savings are possible. CPL-Carbon Link has offered to do these surveys for projects that are clients or simply would like to have CPL-Carbon Link review their operation. The information accumulated by CPLCarbon Link is being used to attempt to fashion industry standards so that a common reference point can be established for activated charcoal usage."

The greatly extended use of the underground trolley-locomotive system for hauling coal without doubt was one of the most important factors in the rapid progress of coal mining and the increased production of coal in American coal mines during the period 1910-20. Much of the superior efficiency of production of our underground coal and metal lines should also be credited to the trolley locomotive system. The trend to mechanization of mines during the past 15 years, mere particularly the past 5 years, with higher production per man employed and greatly accelerated advancement of working places, has required increased use of trolley locomotives, necessitating larger equipment, higher speeds, and more 'frequent turn over of pit cars. This is re¬flected in increased size of locomotives and the use of larger mine ears (some with a capacity up to or over 10 tons); moreover, heavier rails and larger-size trolley wires have boon or ought to have boon installed. Trolley-locomotive haulage has proved to be rapid; economical, efficient, and productive; nevertheless; in spite of these advantages, so-many hazardous features and, unsafe conditions are involved and the price paid in life and property is so high as to justify the statement that the system should be scrapped if it cannot be operated under reasonably safe conditions. Since bare trolloy wires were introduced into underground mines, they have boon responsible for the death of hundreds of diners, property damage totaling millions of dollars, an indeterminate loss of tonnage through the abandonment of mines or parts of mines, and loss of time after disasters caused by fires or explosions originated by the trolley haulage system.

Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements at Thiess Bros Pty Ltd South Blackwater coal mine commenced in 1975.Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioncd in June 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world.The equipment selected is described and compared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise clean up effort and to ensure stabilily of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Programmable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the availability of this fourth issue of the IPMI Journal, a publication of the International Precious Metals Educational and Scientific Foundation. This digital peer reviewed publication has been created as a vehicle for the sharing of technical information related to the science and technology of precious metals. Since 1976, the International Precious Metals Institute has championed the exchange of information of critical importance to the precious metals scientific and commercial communities through its various communications vehicles. This has included instructional videos, annual conference symposia, special topic committee meetings, regional seminars, and professional and student achievement awards. Due to the breadth of important topics related to all aspects of precious metals, it has been the vision of the IPMI to provide a publication available to the general public that would become a key source of pertinent topics containing high quality publications by experts in their fields of study. Historically, the IPMI has attracted world renowned experts in many fields (including Nobel Laureates Henry Taube, Ei-ishi Negishi, Robert Grubs, Professor Ben Feringa, and David MacMillan) in the dissemination of discoveries, inventions, and industry proven practices. Such information has a total value greater than the sum of its parts as seemingly unrelated innovations from distinct focus areas can be adapted to solve problems. Because of this important characteristic of information exchange, we have decided to create a digital journal, available to the general public, that will not only communicate state of the art discoveries and sound practices, but will also review historical communications from the IPMI’s archives that have value and use even in today’s environment. "Plant 2 at the Kinross Paracatu gold operation in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, was commissioned in late 2008. Designed to be the largest tonnage, lowest grade gold milling operation in the world, Plant 2’s throughput has steadily increased towards its design capacity of 5087 tons per hour.The plant employs a gold-specific flotation scheme to recover the majority of gold, which is present as discrete free gold particles. Additional gold is recovered by jigs in the grinding circuit, and the jig concentrates are reground, upgraded and subjected to intensive cyanide leaching. The flotation cleaner concentrate is reground and leached using a conventional CIL circuit.One year after start-up, with the plant stabilizing operationally, plant circuit surveys were completed by a joint team from Kinross Paracatu and Blue Coast Metallurgy Ltd. The surveys audited the flotation and concentrate treatment circuits to investigate the metallurgical performance.This paper describes the Plant 2 operation and how the surveys were designed and executed. Some of the quality control systems that were employed to provide meaningful data from such a low grade gold ore are described and findings and actions taken to improve metallurgy as a consequence of the surveys are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Paracatu mine is located two kilometres north of the city of Paracatu, in the north western portion of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, 230 km southeast of the national capital Brasília (shown in Figure 1). The present day Paracatu mining operation, fully owned by Kinross Gold, through its Brazilian subsidiary Rio Paracatu Mineração (RPM) is designed to be the largest tonnage, lowest grade free milling gold operation in the world.The deposit currently hosts some 1.2 billion tonnes of ore at a grade of ~0.41 g/t gold, hence contains a total gold reserve of over 20 million ounces. At a designed plant throughput rate of 61 Mt/year the mine life goes beyond 2030."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted joint research to evaluate explosion blast effects on mine ventilation stoppings at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM). After mine explosion accidents, MSHA conducts investigations to determine the cause(s) as a means to mitigate or eliminate future occurrences. As part of these post-explosion investigations, the condition of underground stoppings, including the debris from damaged stoppings, are documented as evidence of the strength and the direction of the explosion forces. The LLEM data showed that a total pressure of 52 kPa (7.6 psi) destroyed the solid concrete block stopping, ~36 kPa (~5.2 psi) destroyed the hollow-core concrete block stopping, and 9 kPa (1.3 psi) destroyed the steel panel stopping. These results will assist investigators in determining the explosion forces that destroy or damage stoppings during actual coal mine explosions.

Electromagnetic wire rope testing is the only practical non-destructive method to evaluate the current condition of wire ropes in general, and in the mining industry in particular. The method has been successfully used worldwide for decades. In mining it has considerably improved the safety of operations. Yet, problems persist. In particular both the Loss-of-Metallic-Area (LMA) readings, as well as the Local Fault (LF) readings, as obtained by different instrument operators, were found to be unacceptably diverse. Consequently, large sums have been spent internationally, as well as in Canada, comparing a whole range of these instruments in an effort to rate their performance. The published results clearly confirmed operational experience, namely that the LMA and LF readings were, indeed, unacceptably diverse. Excellent pertinent conclusions were also published. In Canada the authors? conclusion was that while the divergence in the LF signal based results could, possibly, be attributed to both hardware and human-error related factors, the LMA signal related quantitative uncertainties were human-error related. Consequently, much attention was paid in Canada to developing novel control methods, namely computerized ones to replace the more error-prone analogue ones. In addition new sensor-heads were developed, both for portable as well as for permanent installation with remote control operations. While these efforts were of considerable benefit, the situation must again be carefully reviewed with very special reference to deep-level mining, now of immediate concern in Canada as well. In this paper the authors supply an overview of the results obtained by three of the four major international projects referred to previously. Relevant conclusions/comments are also restated. Moreover, specific recommendations are put forward as to how current problems might best be remedied.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducts research at the Galena Mine, Wallace, ID, with the aim of mitigating the effects of rock bursting. Destress blasting is commonly used as a stress control technique at the mine. A digital seismic array and an array of borehole pressure cells (BPC's) had been installed near the site of a stope undergoing mining and periodic de stressing. The instrumentation was being monitored at the time of a destress blast of the 46-99 stope. No significant seismic events occurred coincident with the destress. However, the destress was followed by a 2 ½ -week period of increased seismic activity, including two damaging events on February 7, 1990, at 034500 (hour, minute, and second) and 122020 Pacific standard time. BPC measurements indicated coseismic ground pressure changes on the order of 200 to 300 kPa associated with the damaging events. Fault plane solutions and dislocation models established that stress changes induced by the event at 034500 may have been significant in promoting the occurrence of the event at 122020. Theoretical investigations suggest that applying knowledge of the existing stress field, an understanding of rock burst mechanics, and fracture mechanics principles can improve destress effectiveness.

THE Yallourn chimney has aroused interest, as it is, for the time being, the tallest structural erection in Australia. Its height was not decided on, however, with the object of breaking records, but is purely incidental to the purpose which it serves. Theboiler plant at the briquetting works (first instalment) consists of five Babcock and Wilcox land-type water-tube boilers, each of 4510 sq ft. heating su:r£ace and 225 sq. ft. grate area in the form of step grates. Four boilers will normally produce 73,000 lb. of steam per hour at a gauge pressure of 265 lb. and a temperature of 6500 F., the fifth boiler being a reserve. Each boiler will consume about 100 tons of Yallourn coal per 24 hours. Provision is made for future installation of economizers, should it be found desirable. Designing for this condition, and allowing for a waste gas temperature of 3500 F. and an air temperature exceeding 1000 it was found necessary to have a draft of about 1.3 in. (water gauge) at the base of the chimney, and to deal with about 2000 cub. ft. of gases per second. Estimates were made of the cost of providing the necessary draught by means of fans and by means of a tall chill).ney. The annual charges of the two methods differed only slightly, and the tall chimney wasselected as being the more general practice in briquetting factories.Estimates were prepared for brick and concrete chiIlllleys. Yallourn bricks at that time were hand-made, and, while very suitable for domestic work, were not capable of withstanding high compressive stresses. The chimney design to suit these bricks thus required to be on very ample lines, resulting in high cost. Machine-made bricks from Melbourne would cost about £5 10s. per thousand on the site, with extra for radials, so that high cost again resulted. On the score...

Within a 30-mile radius of Sudbury, Ontario, the Ontario division of the International Nickel Co. of Canada, Ltd., operates nine underground mines and two open pits. Prior to 1966, ore removal from the underground workings was mainly by scraping, using 125-hp electric slushers in blasthole and caving mining, and 30-hp or less air-operated slushers for fill- method mining. The development and evaluation of low-profile, diesel-powered front-end loaders, designed specifically for underground operations, was followed with keen interest during the period 1964-1965.

This job was done in Morristown, NJ, with mono fluid system jet grouting for the construction of a new bank building. After the demolition of the existing two story structures, an excavation in loose sandy fill materials was necessary in order to reach the new structure basement level. Due to this jet grouting was selected as a medium to provide both excavation support and permanent underpinning, minimizing the adjacent building settlements. These two adjacent buildings were partially underpinned with a "gravity wall" made with 2 and 3 rows of secant vertical and inclined jet grout columns. Besides the classical jet grouting control methods, during the jet grouting execution, all the drilling and grouting parameters were recorded by a proprietary system called "Slogger". Additionally, after the jet grouting execution, an innovative result control technique was used by means of the application of the same parameter recording system. Some of the production columns were re-drilled and a comparison was made between the obtained drilling parameters and those obtained for the same age test columns. Under the referred existing conditions and in comparison with the conventional underpinning techniques, this project demonstrated that jet grouting, with proper execution and result control, can be faster than them and can maintain the building structural stability and act, at the same time, as a retention system minimizing the existing building settlements.

The Kalgoorlie Tailings Retreatment Project (or "Kaltails") involves the reclamation and retreatment of approximately 50 million tonnes of gold tailing situated on the Golden Mile at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Tailing is reclaimed and retreated at the rate of 42 million tonnes per annum. The project is a Joint Venture between Poseidon Limited and Gold Corporation, with Poseidon being the major participant (90%) and manager of the operation through its wholly owned subsidiary Kaltails Mining Services Pty Ltd. The marginal nature of the tailing retreatment project dictated that a detailed feasibility study be undertaken. Extensive sampling and metallurgical testing of the tailing permitted the development of an optimum economic processing route. A sensitivity analysis undertaken as part of the feasibility study indicated the project to be very sensitive to gold price and unit operating cost variations, and relatively insensitive to capital cost variations.

This report describes a computer-based model for estimating the tangible costs of injuries and deaths from work-related accidents in underground coal mines. The study undertook to identify and quantify the elements of accident costs, including field visits to coal mines, insurance carriers, and public agencies. The mathematical models developed for each tangible element of accident cost are presented in Volume I of the report. A listing of the computer programs which comprise the model and instructions for using the programs are presented in Volume II. Statistical distributions of mining family characteristics, data on 95 miners killed in underground accidents, and other basic data used to develop the model are presented in Volume III. Application of the model to a data base of 9,286 accidents which occured in underground bituminous coal mines during 1974 yielded a total of $56,900,000 in tangible costs to industry, mining families, and public agencies. Loss of income to the families of miners injured or killed in these accidents accounted for 47 percent of the total.

The selection of a mining plant for carrying on development work presents many problems distinct in themselves, and affected by various local factors. In this paper, the writer proposes outlining and discussing in some detail the chief factors governing the economic selection of such plants. This will be followed by an enumeration of the underground and surface plant required for carrying on several hypothetical exploratory and mining operations. Where it is impossible or not convenient to obtain hydro-electric power, and where wood for fuel is scarce, we now find oil engines being used. A 100 h.p. oil engine, such as would be required to operate a three-drill air compressor, consumes approximately five Imperial gallons of fuel-oil per hour at full load. On the basis of a 60 per cent load factor, this gives, for eight hours' operation, a probable actual consumption of twenty-four Imperial gallons.

"Construction of the Cigar Lake uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan is well under way. Production is anticipated to begin in the first half of 2007. When in full production, the mine is projected to produce a net 18,000,000 pounds of U3O8 per annum from a high grade ore averaging approximately 20% U3O8.Water management was a major issue that required substantial effort in the Cigar Lake design. Not only is effluent quality controlled, a tight water balance to minimize effluent volume is also designed into processes in order to minimize environmental impact. This paper focuses on the water treatment process and water handling equipment, as well as the operating philosophies that will reduce fresh water consumption to a minimum. An overview of the mining and ore handling systems, as well as aspects of controlling water production from the ore formation and the mine development areas will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Cigar Lake ore body has proven and probable reserves that total 232 million pounds U3O8. Cigar Lake is the world’s largest undeveloped high-grade deposit. It is the second largest highgrade deposit surpassed only by the McArthur River deposit another Cameco - operated mine in the Saskatchewan Athabasca Basin. Cigar Lake is owned 50% by Cameco Corporation, 37% by AREVA (COGEMA Resources Inc.), 8% by Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada Ltd. and 5% by TEPCO Resources Inc. When production starts in 2007, ground ore slurry from Cigar Lake will be shipped to the McClean Lake mill (owned by AREVA) some 80 km away. All of the Cigar Lake uranium will be leached from the ore at McClean Lake. During initial production ramp up, all uranium will be processed at McClean Lake to yellow cake (uranium oxide). After the average production has exceeded a 10 million pound per year rate, Cigar Lake uranium will begin to flow from the McClean Lake Mill to the Rabbit Lake Mill. At this point, subject to regulatory approval, 57% of the Cigar Lake uranium, in a uranium rich solution, will be transported to Rabbit Lake mill (owned by Cameco) for purification to yellow cake. A complete summary of the flow of uranium from the Cigar Lake ore body through to product at both McClean Lake and Rabbit Lake can be found in a recent paper titled “The Cigar Lake Project – Mining, Ore Handling and Milling” in the March 2004 issue of the CIM Bulletin. The London Metal Exchange began its first official session of aluminum trading on Monday, October 2, LME prices based on 3-month forward contracts opened Monday at 52.4 cents per pound, fell midway through the week to 52.3 cents and ended Friday at a high of 52.7 cents. For the week, LME metal averaged 52.5 cents. Although Reynolds Metals Co. and Aluminum Co. of American continued in September to value unalloyed 99.5 percent aluminum ingot at 53 cents per pound, other producers were at higher positions of 55-57 cents. Alcan Aluminum Corp. of Alcan Aluminum, Ltd., a Canadian producer, increased prices for its U.S.-marketed ingot by 2 cents to 55 cents per pound, effective September 21. New York merchants increased ingot quotes by approximately 0.5 cents to 52.8-53.5 cents per pound.

When the Mining Bill came before the Victorian Legislature not so many months ago, the question arose whether mining managers required education, and to what extent. Some members of the House expressed themselves in a way which appeared to leave the impression that mining managers would be all the better if they were not brought up in a scientific school.To try and prove what we owe to science I will give a short history of colonial mining from the earlier period to the present time and compare results.I believe I am right in saying that South Australia is the pioneer colony in mining and to her belongs the credit of not dnly being the first mining colony, but also that her beginning turned out so successful, as the history of the Burra Burra copper mine will testify. At about the same time a little galena mining was carried on nearer to Adelaide, but as this did not prove a success and was only worked by tributing parties, little notice was taken of it.

"Following a significant reduction in world Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF) capacity from 2003 to 2008, a major optimization initiative was successfully carried out on the lead upgrading and bulk (zinclead) flotation circuits in the Brunswick Concentrator.This paper describes the process improvements that have taken place in order to reduce the quantity of bulk concentrate:•,Increase in lead upgrading rougher flotation circuit capacity•,Installation of a closed-circuit bulk regrind utilizing MillPebs and 150 mm Cavex hydrocyclones•,Installation of two additional cleaner flotation stages on the bulk circuit•,Optimization of the manipulated variables in the lead upgrading and bulk circuitsINTRODUCTIONThe Brunswick Mine (Xstrata Zinc Canada) is located near Bathurst, New Brunswick and is one of the world’s largest lead/zinc mines. Milling of ore commenced in 1964 from the No. 12 orebody, with an expansion in 1966 to accommodate ore from the No. 6 open pit mine. The planned closure of the mine will take place at the end of the first quarter in 2013. The ore is a complex massive sulphide, consisting of approximately 20% valuable minerals, 60% pyrite and 20% silicates.A simplified flowsheet for the concentrator is given in Figure 1. The overall flowsheet involves SAG milling, secondary ball milling, selective flotation, and dewatering by thickening, filtering and drying. The complexity of the flowsheet evolves from the requirements for fine grinding and the production of four concentrates: zinc (sphalerite), lead (galena), copper (chalcopyrite) and bulk (sphalerite plus galena).Primary hydrocyclone overflow feeds the copper-lead aerator-roughers for flotation at pH 9.0 with soda ash. Plant xanthate (80-20 sodium isopropyl and potassium amyl) and AP407 are used as collectors in the copper-lead circuit. The rougher concentrate is directed to the copper-lead regrind circuit and the tailings are fed to the secondary grinding circuit. The secondary hydrocyclone overflow from the secondary grinding circuit feeds the copper-lead rougher-scavenger banks. Rougher concentrates are reground to a P80 of 28 µm prior to three stages of copper-lead cleaning. The first stage of cleaning is done in an open circuit with the tail reporting to the cleaner scavenger. The cleaner scavenger concentrate reports to the regrind circuit and the cleaner scavenger tail combines with the rougher/scavenger tail to feed the zinc circuit. The second and third stages of cleaning are performed in closed circuit with the cleaner tail being recycled to the copper-lead regrind circuit. The average final concentrate grades 23% Pb, 3% Cu and 704 g/t Ag, and is fed to the copper separation circuit."

The removal of a horizontal piIlar between Nos. 9 and 11 levels (1,116 feet from the collar of main shaft) was successfully carried out by blast hole drilling, and, to the best of the authors' knowledge, this mass blast of 40,000 tons of ore (requiring the use of 7,150 Ibs. of explosive and 5,385 feet of primacord) was the first occasion on which a task of this magnitude has been carried out underground in an Australian mine.Blast hole drilling was introduced by this company approximately fifteen months ago at New Cobar Mine in sub-level stoping.This experimental drilling and blasting gave very valuable information as to the correct technique to be adopted when the final plans were being prepared for the removal of the horizontal pillar at New Occidental Mine.The dimensions of this pillar were approximately 15 feet long, and from 40 to 60 feet wide, and 65 feet in depth.The block of ore extended to 35 feet above the level and 30 feet below, the upper section being partially excavated to form the bell-hole floor and grizzly chambers used for drawing off the broken ore in the shrink stope above the No. 10 level.Description of Ore-bodyThe main ore-body is situated almost vertically in a well-defined shear zone at the junction of sandstone and slate, the sandstone forming the eastern and the slate the western wall.The ore-body consists of highly silicified slate (chert) sparsely impregnated with sulphides, containing a small percentage of copper and bismuth.The total length of the ore-body is approximately 450 feet, with a maximum width of 60 feet in the main section, which is about 200 feet long.This is the section shown in longitudinal and cross-section (Fig. 1).The ore-body is divided by a horse of mullock in the northern end into two legs, the eastern and western, which are approximately 250 feet long and averaging 25 feet in width.This ore-body is strong, hard and abrasive with extremely strong walls, an ideal proposition for open stoping and mass blasting.MiningIn all levels above No. 9 the cut and fill method of ore extraction was adopted.
