Exploration expenditures in Alaska last year amounted to $8.9 million. This was comparable to 1985's $9.1 million. Development expenditures dropped 29%, $24.3 million in 1986 vs. $34.1 million in 1985. The exploration industry is restructuring and stabilizing after the loss of major mineral firms during the last few years. These included Anaconda Minerals, Asarco, Hecla Mining, Enserch Exploration, Phillips Minerals Division, Exxon Minerals, Noranda Inc., General Crude, Mohawk Oil & Gas, Inspiration Development, Teton Exploration, and St. Joe Minerals Division. Some of these companies were mineral subsidiaries of oil companies and were either dissolved or redirected to programs outside of Alaska. However, recent entry exploration firms include Echo Bay Mines Ltd., Long Lac Minerals, and Exvenco. They are busy evaluating prospects and mineral developments in the southeastern panhandle. In the 1970s, about $254 million was spent on Alaska mineral exploration. Of this, about 5% ($12 million) was for nonmetallics and coal, about 26% was directed at precious metals ($66 million) mainly gold, and 69% ($175.3 million) for the base metals zinc, copper, molybdenum, tin, tungsten, and nickel. Since the early 1980s, trends have reversed. Of the nearly $196.3 million spent from 1981-1986, 48% has been for precious metals ($94.3 million) and 40% on nonmetallics and coal. In the last two years, nearly 70% of the Alaskan exploration dollar has been spent in search of precious metals. Three gold skarns were explored during the year - the Nixon Fork project in western Alaska (Battle Mountain Mining Co.), the Nebesna and Rambler lodes of the northern Wrangell Mountains (Nebesna Mining Partners), and the Zackley project near Paxson in southcentral Alaska (Nerco Minerals). Nearly 7.6 km (25,000 ft) of diamond and rotary drilling were conducted on these three properties. The following report details the successful construction of Contract 2A of the Three Rivers Water Quality Management Program, Intrenchment Creek Combined Sewer Overflow Conveyance System, in DeKalb County for the City of Atlanta, Georgia. The contract required construction of approximately 2878 m (9443 ft) of tunnel bored to an initial diameter of 7.95 m (26 ft 1 in), with provisions to concrete line those portions designated by the engineer to a finished internal diameter of 6.91 m (22 ft 8 in). Flanking the tunnel are two shafts. The upstream shaft was excavated to a nominal diameter of 4.87 m (16 ft) to accommodate a finished internal diameter of 3.66 m (12 ft). This shaft required a transition boot fully concrete lined to final dimensions of 6.91 m (22 ft 8 in) wide, 13.72 m (45 ft) long, and varying in height from 6.91 m (22 ft 8 in) to 12.80 m (42 ft). Associated work necessary to complete the contractual obligations included installation of 22.86 m (75 ft) of cut-and-cover box culvert, 484 m (1589 ft) of open-cut sewer installation in sizes ranging from 0.30 m (12 in) to 1.68 m (5 ft 6 in), one river crossing, 137.46 m (451 ft) of monolithic concrete trapezoidal channel, and installation of 19125 cu m (25000 cu yd) of select fill material compacted and graded to finished contours. The downstream shaft was excavated to a minimum diameter of 12.04 m (39 ft 6 in) and concrete lined to a finished internal diameter of 10.67 m (35 ft). Requirements here included installation of a complete pumping station with all mechanical, electrical, and structural elements necessary for dewatering the tunnel through the controlled use of four 250 hp submersible pumps discharging into the facilities of the Intrenchment Creek Water Pollution Plant. There are many types of filters designed to separate a solid from a liquid, including plate and frame presses, pressure leaf filters, gravity filters and vacuum filters. This discussion will be limited to continuous vacuum filtration and, specifically, to continuous rotary vacuum disc filters, drum filters and horizontal belt filters. The use of vacuum filtration can be advantageous in that: 1. The feed slurry can be delivered to the filter either by gravity or by a simple, inexpensive low pressure pump that only has to overcome the resistance of the feed piping system. 2. The filter equipment does not have to withstand high pressures. Consequently, a wide range of materials of construction, including plastic and fiberglas reinforced polyester (FRP), can be used in the fabrication. 3. After the form time, the filter cake is exposed to the atmosphere and the cake is accessible for further operations such as mechanical or physical dewatering, washing, and sampling on a continuous basis. 4. The discharge of the dewatered solids is continuous for directly feeding to the next operation; for example, a dryer. 5. Various methods of discharge can be fitted to the filter to effect optimum discharge of the dewatered cake solids. The principal of operation of a vacuum filter, regardless of type, is basically the same. The filter incorporates a filter medium supported on a drainage system and arranged so that the mixture to be separated (feed slurry) can be introduced to one side of the filter medium on which the solids are trapped and through which the liquid (filtrate) flows due to the applied vacuum.

A practical and economical flowsheet has been developed and demonstrated by integrating the packed column flotation with the GranuFlow process for fine coal recovery. Orimulsion, which was used as an additive, served a dual purpose: first in the flotation and second in the dewatering and granulation steps. The test results on the coal preparation effluent sample show that Orimulsion is flexible and compatible with fuel oil and various frothers used in the packed column. Clean coal with ash contents of 3.0, 3.7, 4.3 and 5.1% were produced from a head sample of 33% ash at combustible matter recoveries of 72.4, 81.1, 87.5, and 89.2%, respectively. Other advantages include high throughput, low moisture, improved handleability, and reduced dustiness of the dewatered coal, thus providing a very significant economic Incentive for the integrated process.

Areas of bubble contact were delineated for topaz and tourmaline in the presence of chloride, fluoride, sulfate, phosphate, oxalate, and citrate ions using dodecylamine hydrochloride collector. The limits of pH and the minimum collector concentration were established using the bubble pick-up technique. Bubble contact did not occur below the p.z.c. (point of zero charge), estimated to be 5.6 for topaz and 6.6 for tourmaline, in the presence of chloride ion. Flotation below the p.z.c. was, however, extended by citrate, oxalate, phosphate, sulfate, and fluoride ions. Oxalate, citrate, and fluoride ions displayed the greatest pH range of activation, followed by phosphate and sulfate ions. Chloride ion acted as an indifferent electrolyte. Topaz was selectively activated with respect to tourmaline by fluoride and phosphate ions. Topaz was activated by fluoride ion between pH 2.4 and 5.6. Tourmaline flotation in this pH range was virtually insignificant. Topaz was activated by phosphate ion between pH 4.9 and 7.4. Tourmaline flotation in this pH range was only partial. Activation appeared to be strongest when anionic protonated species were in maximum concentration. Strong activation also corresponded to very stable metal ion species thought to be formed on the surface of each mineral.

Introduction From the days of the Spanish in the eighteenth century, Colorado's San Juan mining district has attracted miners and public interest. The Spanish left behind names - San Juans, La Plata, Animas, legends of lost mines, and the remains of a few scattered mining operations. They came, but did not stay. Again in 1860-61, as a spinoff of the Pike's Peak gold rush, prospectors climbed the mountains and descended into the canyons searching for gold. They found some, not enough to convince them to remain and confront the isolation, often hostile environment and the Utes, who rightfully felt this to be their home. Not until the 1870s did miners come to stay. In their wake little camps grew in the high valleys and squeezed into narrow canyons. Nowhere else in Colorado were there more rugged mountains, a higher average elevation, nor a climate that one old Swede said was "three months of mighty late fall and nine months of winter." The San Juans proved eventually to be a mineral treasure chest. At the moment, however, the prospectors sought gold. Then they discovered silver deposits and the first rush was on. It got started just in time to be completely overcome by the Leadville excitement. At Leadville, investors almost fell over themselves to buy claims and stock in the hopes of becoming another millionaire like Leadville's own Horace Tabor. The San Juaners could only look from the sidelines and speculate how it might have been had fate been kinder. Fate was seldom kind, as these pioneers quickly discovered. From the mid-1870s on, the San Juaners wrestled with some major problems. And the fate of their district rode in the balance. The problems they faced were similar to those of other Colorado districts, compounded by their geographic isolation. Every mining district needed the best transportation system available, experienced investors combined with sound investment, and mineral reserves to develop. The San Juans offered the last in abundance. It was hoped the first two would appear. Railroads - much needed transportation link Nothing was more desired than railroad connections, the penultimate nineteenth century form of transportation. Colorado's own, the Denver & Rio Grande, resolved the issue with its mountain-hugging narrow gauge. As early as the mid-1870s, the D&RG dreamed of tapping this potentially lucrative market in southwestern Colorado. A national economic depression and then the Leadville silver excitement prevented immediate construction. Not until 1879-80 did survey crews start work.

Early studies in the carbonate leaching of uranium ores led to the investigation of pressure leaching as a method to enhance the dissolution of the metal values in this system. The initial investigations conducted at the University of British Columbia supplemented by the work done by the group at the A.E.C. Grand Junction pilot plant, all established the higher efficiency and better economics of the alkaline pressure leaching system. This work was conducted either in laboratory autoclaves using oxygen overpressures, or in pilot plant sized horizontal autoclaves with air as an oxidant. Both of these testing vehicles utilized agitation provided by relatively high speed impellers (300 to 700 rpm), which apparently enhanced the oxidation of the uranium to the hexavalent state. The installation of vertical autoclaves on a production scale, which through design considerations require relatively slow agitator speeds (68 rpm), led to the studies of the utilization efficiency of the air addition and the use of catalytic type oxidants to effect a greater usage of the oxygen added through the aeration system. In addition to investigating the effects of the chemical additives, studies were also conducted on the effect of different impeller configurations on the extraction of uranium, which in itself is a measure of oxidation efficiency. The material presented in this paper was compiled in the Ambrosia Lake district of New Mexico, and the majority of the data was obtained in the Homestake- Sapin Partners mill, located at Grants, New Mexico.

[The two types of sulfide deposits in the Bathhurst Newcastle area are; (a) epignetic fissure deposits, and (b) massive sulfide deposits. Geological evidence has been variously interpreted to suggest a syngenetic origin, a source bed' origin, or a magmatic hydrothermal origin for the massive sulfide deposits. Sulfides disseminated through the black shales and argillites of the host rocks are enriched in S32 (mean value 22.34, S34. = 5.8 per mil) relative to the meteoritic standard of 22.21, and have a broad spread in range of values. S32/S34 ratios of sulfide minerals from the deposits occur in two distinct groups. The massive sulfide deposits exhibit ratios between 21.88 to 22.05, while the fissure deposits exhibit ratios between 22.18 and 22.21. These results suggest two separate sources for the sulfur, each, however, resulting in magmatic hydrthermal deposition because of the narrow spread of ratios in each group. Granite intrusive into the host rocks of the sulfide deposits have a mean K/A age of 386 ± 10 M.Y. Lead minerals in the sulfide deposits have a mean nodel lead age of 370±20 M. Y. Thus the lead minerals and the granite bodies were emplaced during the same major orogenic event. Sulfide minerals from magmatic hydrothermal deposit have a very narrow range of S32/S34 values, as do those of the Bathurst area. It seems reasonable, therefore, that well homogenized magmatic hydrothermal solutions are the most logical source of the sulfide deposits. Furthermore, the homogeneity of the lead isotopic abundance data gives strong independent evidence that the ores are of a magmatic hydrothermal origin.]

The Bureau of Mines investigated rapid bubble-pulp separation to improve flotation kinetics. A shallow-depth froth separator was employed to quickly recover the mineral-laden bubbles from a mixture of ore, water, and air bubbles. The shallow depth minimized the rising distance required to recover even the smallest size bubbles (100 ~m). Therefore, the slurry remained in the unit only long enough to recover the bubbles before the pulp exited through the conical bottom. Joining this unit with a rapid bubble-particle attachment unit, a rapid flotation system was formed that floated silica from phosphate in one-fifth of the retention time for conventional mechanical cells. The hydrodynamics of the rapid flotation system along with fundamental parameters for scale-up are presented in this paper.

An analysis of screen design options on the operating efficiency of secondary crushing plants has been conducted using a dynamic computer model. The model allows for the simulation of a wide variety of crushing circuits and can be run on either a microcomputer (IBM PC/XT) or a large time-sharing mainframe computer. Size reduction and separation characteristics of crushers and screens are based on standard manufacturer design and performance data. Input/output routines are available in tabular, alarm or strip chart recorder modes to facilitate operation of the program. A number of alternate circuit designs are compared to show the influence of surge capacity, screen size and area, screen deck location, and closed side crusher settings on the operation of a 10,000 ton per day plant. The program is currently in use at Queen's University to teach plant operations and control. It has potential to be a valuable tool for operator training.

Explosives are used to mine coal. Any blast results in three size categories of products, namely over-, middle-, and under-size. Boulders can still be broken smaller in further operations after blasting. The under-size, for instance coal fines, negatively affects the mining efficiency. Their reduction ensures better returns. The paper concerns investigations aimed at reducing coal fines' generation. Inherent fractures are identified as one of source of fines. The discussion is therefore centered on establishing a relationship between the fracture occurrence, the explosive properties and the blast outputs evaluated in terms of the fines generated.

The Cripple Creek Mining district is located in Teller County, Colorado, 30 km west of Colorado Springs and 9 km southwest of Pikes Peak (Fig. 1). Since its discovery in 1891, the district has produced almost 21 million tr oz of gold (Gott et al., 1967), most of which has been from high-grade vein deposits. Globe Hill is located in the northern part of the district (Fig. 2). Production from its summit has yielded over 100,000 tr oz of gold. Early production was concentrated along high-grade veins and fault structures, but emphasis was soon placed on the extensive, low-grade (0.0X oz/t), breccia-hosted mineralization. From 1977 to 1981 Newport Minerals, Inc., a subsidiary of Gold Resources, Inc., mined 680,000 t of low-grade gold ore from the Globe Hill pit (Fig. 3) and production is expected to resume in 1986. These strongly-altered and -oxidized breccias are amenable to bulk-mining methods, and thus similar deposits are currently being sought elsewhere in the district. Numerous publications and reports discuss the breccia-hosted mineralization at Globe Hill. They include Cross and Penrose (1895); Argall (1905, 1908); Lindgren and Ransome (1906); Keener (1962); Peters (1982); Thompson, Trippel, and Dwelley (1985); and Trippel (1985). This preprint is a summary of the recently-completed research documented by Trippel (1985).

Ever since the industrial Revolution both major and small companies have put much emphasis on the use of incentives to compensate top management for extra effort and extra skill. For many years industries have also provided hourly rate employees with incentive plans. More recently incentive plans have been extended to include the "front line" supervisors. Many companies have what are called Christmas bonus or profit-sharing plans. The incentives for foremen in mining, which we shall discuss, differ from such bonus plans in that the incentives are paid on a definite measured performance for each individual, and thus directly reflect his effort and skill. What is the objective for paying incentives? The objective for any part of an industrial Engineering Program is to increase productivity and reduce unit cost. The unit cost must include the entire cost of the program. From what base do we start an incentive plan? One should think of art incentive program as the top rung of the Industrial Engineering ladder. Therefore, a company must take several steps before reaching this top rung. The TRJV Mine is located approximately 43 miles northeast of Winnemucca, along the east flank of the Osgood Mountains in the Potosi Mining District, Humboldt County, Northwest Nevada (see Figure 1). The Turquoise Ridge Mine is an underground mine, and is a 25% joint venture partner with Newmont Mining. The TRJV mine utilizes the underhand cut-and-fill mining method due to the relatively low rock quality in the ore zones and the relatively shallow dipping 25-45 degree ore body geometries. This paper defines a rehabilitation risk rating system (RRRS) for prioritizing rehabilitation of drifts damaged in the mining processes including long term development drifts providing access to the mining areas. The ultimate use is as a mine planning tool for the organized scheduling of rehab in a timely manner. A few case studies of the most needy rehab areas identified by the RRRS mapping system is presented, and the type of rehab completed design for these areas. Suggestions on improving the rehab risk mapping system include the use of support history and rock mass strength rating factors.

Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation's (KACC) entrance into the alumina market began in 1946 with the purchase of a small plant in Baton Rouge. Louisiana. Since that time KACC has been involved with the design, construct; on, and operation of many alumina plants around the world. One of these plants is located in Gramercy, Louisiana. The Gramercy Works is a multiplant installation consisting of an alumina plant, a caustic-chlorine plant, a petroleum coke calciner and a fluorochemicals plant. Each of these plants require their own specific environmental control programs to abate pollution. Kaiser has made significant progress through the years on their own initiative in pollution control. But many new challenges have been and continue to be created with the enactment of environmental laws. The 1970 Clean Air Act Amendments, the resurrection of the old "Refuse Act" in 1970 and finally the 1972 Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments prompted the formulation of our current philosophy towards the abatement of pollution. Since the formulation of these complicated pieces of legislation, others equally complicated, have come to being. The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act as amended by the Federal Environmental Pesticide Control Act of October, 1972, the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976, the Solid Waste Disposal and Resource Recovery Act of 1976 and the Safe Drinking Water Act sighed in December of 1974 have all contributed to the challenge for an alumina plant to meet regulatory constraints. However, this paper will only discuss the alumina plant?s environmental programs designed to meet compliance with air and water pollution legislation. At the Gramercy Alumina Plant, over $25 million has been spent for pollution control since 1969. The Gramercy Plant is a prime example of KACC's commitment to meeting the environmental challenge.

The Rawah Ditch is a mountainous water supply diversion which supplies Larimer County, Colorado with water since 1903. The ditch includes two historic tunnels excavated by drill and blast through a gneissic rock buttress. Both rock tunnels were failing with annual convergence. After a snowshoe-accessed eld investigation, nite element modeling, and an alternatives analysis, a diameter DE pipe was inserted within each tunnel and the annulus lled. The proect was implemented in an Alternative Delivery contract lasting ve months from eld investigation through procurement and construction.

Underground mining method selection (UMMS) is one of the most important decisions that mining engineers have to make. Choosing a suitable underground mining method to extract a mineral deposit is very important in terms of economics, safety and productivity of mining operations. In real life, UMMS is one of the Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) problems and decision makers have always some difficulties in making the right decision in the multiple criteria environment. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy MADM (FMADM) are the MADM tools and can be used for the selection of the best underground mining method by considering the problem criteria. UMMSMADM is a computer program which is based on AHP and FMADM and it can analyze the UMMS problems and produce the best underground mining method considering different deposit shapes and ore bodies.
