The Waneta Expansion Project (WAX) is located near the existing Waneta Dam site at the confluence of the Pend d?Oreille and Columbia rivers, approximately 10 km (6.2 miles) south of Trail, BC, Canada. The WAX owners consist of a partnership between Fortis Inc., Columbia Basin Trust and the Columbia Power Corp. This design-build project was awarded to SNC-Lavalin in late 2010 and is expected to be operational in mid-2015. The WAX consists of a new 335-MW powerhouse, including two new Francis turbine units, each generating approximately 167 MW. The powerhouse is located downstream of the existing Waneta Dam, and will make use of excess water that would otherwise be spilled during the runoff season. Water will be funneled to the turbines through an intake structure and two 10.5- m (34.5-ft) diameter, concrete-lined Penstock Tunnels. A 10-km (6.2-mile) transmission line will connect the powerhouse to existing electrical grids. Redpath/FKCI Waneta Tunnelers (RFK) was subcontracted by the heavy civil contractor, the Aecon/SNC Lavalin (ASL) joint venture, to excavate the two penstock tunnels and install the cast-in-place concrete liner. RFK is a joint venture partnership between J.S. Redpath Ltd., an underground mine contractor located in North Bay, Ontario, and Frontier-Kemper Constructors ULC, a heavy civil tunneling contractor based in Nova Scotia, Canada. Since penstock tunnel excavation was planned using drill-and-blast methods with a significant grade of more than 17 percent, the combined experience of these two contractors was a perfect match.

Interlocking material balances on complex mineral dressing plants greatly assist in metallurgical investigations: indeed, without such a balance, there is no firm basis upon which to base process performance evaluations. To achieve balances both qualitative and quantitative data must be rationalised in conjunction with the process flowsheet. WSL has developed a range of programs to evaluate interlocking material balances. However, to obtain maximum benefit from the balances, answers of direct value at the process level must be provided: WSL has developed also a range of programs for this purpose. Practical examples are given, which illustrate the benefits obtained from process balances.

"Iron as an impurity in pyrophyllite ore affects pottery, ceramics and tile quality. We carried out the characterization of a pyrophyllite ore sample using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and wet chemical analysis. The study revealed the presence of 2.15% iron oxide (Fe2O3 ) along with silica and alumina as the major components, which constituted around 90% of the total sample. We carried out the removal of iron from the pyrophyllite using magnetic separation and acid leaching and found that wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) could remove 28% of iron values while oxalic acid leaching could remove up to 99.3%. The leaching kinetics of iron removal and the effects of pulp density, acid concentration, leaching time and temperature were also investigated. The optimum conditions for leaching were found to be leaching time of 60 minutes, temperature of 90°C, pulp density of 5%, oxalic acid concentration of 0.3 M, and particle size below 100 microns. Iron dissolution from the pyrophyllite sample can be best described by the diffusion of ions through the product layer of constant-size spherical particles. The breakdown of the pyrophyllite structure was evident from the FTIR and TGA studies. The activation energy of the leaching process over the temperature range was calculated to be 43.47 kJ/mol. IntroductionPyrophyllite is a naturally occurring phyllosilicate mineral composed of aluminum silicate hydroxide [Al2Si4O10(OH)2] as the major component and often associated with other minerals such as kaolinite, mica, quartz, rutile and epidote. It occurs in fine-grained sericite schist that is quarried as pyrophyllite (Pandit et al., 2008). In India, pyrophyllite occurs mainly in Madhya Pradesh state, Uttar Pradesh state and the Keonjhar district of Odisha state (Harpavat, 1995). Pure pyrophyllite is a highly desirable material for various applications due to its unique properties. It exhibits high refractive behavior, low thermalelectrical conductivity, low expansion coefficient, low hot-load deformation, low bulk density and high corrosion resistance to molten metal and basic slag (Rieger, 1997). It is used in the ceramics, refractory, foundry, electrical-insulation, sanitary-ware, glassmaking, pesticide and rubber fields. Compared with clay, it has lower thermal conductivity and coefficient of expansion, making it more suitable for refractory applications (Harben, 2002; The Minerals Yearbook, 2011)."

On April 14, 1975, Consolidation Coal Company began to operate a longwall face in their Shoemaker Mine using shield supports. This was the first time that shield supports were used in the United States (1) 1/. Shortly thereafter, Kaiser Steel Corporation started a shield longwall face at their York Canyon Mine (2). From October 1975 through May 1976, three more longwall faces were commissioned in mines located in south-western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia. In June 1976, four installations had completed their first panel and two installations had completed the subsequent move to the second panel where coal production is now well under way. During this time (April 75 to June 76) the total number of shield support face operating months, including moving time, was 40 and the combined face advance was approx. 17, 000 feet (5200 m) with face lengths varying from 450 - 550 feet (137 - 168 m). While the shield support experience in the U.S. is still limited on the basis of time and mining parameters, the operating results of all faces have been very satisfactory. New record 24 hr production figures were set and - far more important - long term production figures could be sustained on an impressively high level even when taking face moving time into account. The purpose of this paper is to review the performance of shield type supports in the U.S. and to assess their value as longwall supports for U.S. underground mining conditions with regard to roof control, maintenance, operator convenience, safety and productivity.

A program of geological research in support of mineral exploration efforts is outlined. Specific goals are stated, approaches to accomplish their attainment are described, and the type of useful results to be expected are outlined. Because mineral exploration or prospecting has intensely practical goals, research in support of it must be applied research, applied to the problem of maintaining or increasing the discovery rate of the exploration effort. To attain research goals, attention to personnel selection, group structure, and program are critically important, and in about that order. A large percentage of the professional personnel should have had experience in mining geology or mineral exploration, and they all should be prospector-oriented. Structuring in the group should be at a minimum, with wide allowance for the kind of independent research which is essential to the nurturing of on-target creativity. The program should be field-oriented, and it should include a wide representation of those subdisciplines of geology which are applicable to mineral exploration. The types of results to be anticipated include improved or new conceptual models for various types of orebodies and their settings from which new ore guides can be derived, new exploration techniques, and the development of a knowledge bank for various aspects of the exploration effort.

OBJECTIVES OF RADIATION MONITORING Monitoring is a tool used in the practice of radiation protection. The primary reasons for monitoring are to reduce radiation exposures to levels that are as low as reasonably achievable and to assure that no individual receives a dose exceeding the maximum individual dose limit. The documentation of radiation doses for legal, medical, or epidemiological reasons is a subordinate function of any monitoring program. The investment in radiation monitoring programs should be guided by four criteria: (1) the detection and avoidance of unnecessary exposures, (2) the magnitude of potential health risks, (3) the determination of combined doses and risks with adequate confidence, and (4) the verification of compliance with established limits. FIRST CRITERION: DOSE REDUCTION - DETECT AND CORRECT UNNECESSARY EXPOSURES The system of dose limitation advocated by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP, 1977), and subscribed to in a broad sense by various regulatory agencies, is comprised of three essential ingredients: (1) [justification] of any practice that produces radiation doses by some commensurate net benefit, (2) [optimization] of radiation control measures by reducing doses to levels that are as low as reasonably achievable, and (3) [limitation] of individual doses to preclude inequities and [moldistribution] of risks. All too often, only the third criterion - the limitation of individual doses to prescribed regulatory limits - is explicitly addressed in everyday radiation protection programs. The emphasis of most exposure control and monitoring efforts appears to be directed toward limiting and documenting individual doses that might approach the legal limit. The first two criteria, i.e. justification and optimization, should contribute to a rationale for allocating monitoring efforts. When applied to individuals, these criteria mean the detection and elimination of unnecessary exposures. This should be a high priority of any monitoring program. Measurements should be directed toward detecting inoperative or ineffective control measures, whether or not there is a risk of exceeding the individual dose limits. The ICRP recommends a procedure that can be used effectively to reduce unnecessary exposures. A n investigation level should be established at an exposure rate substantially lower than the regulatory limit, e.g. 30% of the limit (ICRP 26, 1977, p.33). Measurements obtained during routine monitoring that exceed the investigation level are evaluated with respect to cause and potential reduction. To be effective, the evaluation results should be formally recorded and conveyed both to management and to the workers involved. Although the investigation level recommended by the ICRP is based on a fixed exposure rate or derived air concentration, an equally effective evaluation program may be based on the investigation of a percentage of all measurements. For example, one might investigate the highest 5% or a random selection of all measurements. In any case, the objective is to detect and correct situations that are producing unnecessary exposures. SECOND CRITERION: MONITOR IN PROPORTION TO THE MAGNITUDE OF RISK The ICRP criteria apply generally to all radiation exposures. However, a second priority for monitoring programs should be established on the basis of the nature of the exposures and the magnitude of the health risks involved. Current practices in radiation protection are based on dose limits to specific organs and assessment of individual exposure pathways, with little consideration of the combined doses from various pathways. Although the intent of the ICRP recommendations was to limit the total dose to each critical organ, combined doses from external and internal sources are rarely determined. The recent recommendations of the ICRP (Publ. 26, 1977) are based on the limitation of total health risk from occupational radiation exposures. Implementation of this concept would necessarily require the measurement, calculation and summation of doses and concomitant risks to all organs of the body from all exposure pathways. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has taken the first step toward translating the ICRP recommendations into regulations. The proposed recommendations for Federal Radiation Protection Guidance for Occupational Exposures (USEPA, 1981) include provisions for summing the risk-weighted organ doses to determine compliance with an effective whole-body dose equivalent limit. Whether or not the proposed guidance is modified before final adoption, it seems clear that some version of dose summation and combined risk limitation will be included in future regulations. Because the Environmental Protection Agency has identified methane as a greenhouse gas, the importance of de gasification through gob wells has become more critical. It has been observed that the degree of methane emission is closely related to the geomechanical characteristics of coal bearing strata, roof, floor, and surrounding coal seams. Monthly production data from 250 gob wells were collected from the Warrior Basin in Alabama, and many interesting correlations were observed between methane production with longwall face width, face advancement rate, number of gob wells in a panel, and geologic columns. Extensive finite element analyses were performed to estimate the characteristics of the emission zone in an attempt to corroborate these findings. This paper describes an investigation for developing correlations between the geomechanical behavior of the methane emission zone with methane production.

In the period of time allotted to this paper, an attempt will be made to cover a great deal of territory, figuratively speaking, as far as our experience with ammonium nitrate is concerned. In giving this subject the "broad-brush" treatment, it will be necessary to generalize on the major points which at the same time will permit me to avoid, to a great extent, any involvement in the purely technical and theoretical aspects of blasting. The practice of theorizing before a new idea is tried has practically been discontinued in our organization simply because experience has shown that, almost without exception, theories have fallen aside as some new development takes its place. In regard to blasting, logic and experience seem to have little place in this phase of quarry operations. As the use of low cost blasting agents was introduced in our operating practice, a man who had no previous experience in the field of blasting but with sound knowledge in safety procedures was given the responsibility of supervising the drilling and blasting operations. A total lack of experience is not ordinarily recommended as a prerequisite to assuming the responsibilities of a supervisory position. However, in this case it was obviously a wise decision because there were no pre-conceived ideas as to what techniques would or would not be successful.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines implemented the Fe2+ /Fe3+-SO2 anode reaction in a Cu electrowinning cell with full-size electrodes. Electrowinning was conducted using industrial electrolyte at 258 A/m2 (24 A/ft2) and 40 'C. Manifold injection of electrolyte provided circulation between the electrodes. Five-day operation using an optimized manifold gave an average cell voltage of 0.94 V at 89% current efficiency, which amounted to an energy savings of 2.82 MJ/kg (0.355 kW-hr/lb) compared to conventional electrowinning. Acid misting was completely eliminated, and SO2 concentration 23 cm (9 in.) above the cell averaged 0.06 ppm.

Longwall face-to-face transfers can cost over $100 per minute in lost production potential and $100,000 for personnel and supplies. Such high cost makes extensive planning and control of the transfer process a critical necessity for the economic feasibility of longwall operations. This paper reports operations research techniques used for the analysis and modeling of longwall face-to-face transfers. Transfer data has been collected from companies who operate over 30% of the total U.S. longwall faces. Comprehensive sequence networks of existing longwall transfers were developed; simulation models of transfers under varying conditions were generated; and, the economics of general transfers and time-cost tradeoffs in the transfer procedure were investigated.

"Vertical material transport is one of the major challenges for the successful implementation of deep sea mining projects. The EU research project „Blue Mining” is focusing on sustainable solutions for deep sea mining operations, with one major goal being the advancement of Vertical Transport Systems (VTS). To investigate flow effects under realistic conditions, especially clogging effects, a 136 m high test facility for flow analysis in vertical transport has been constructed using available mining infrastructure. Tests are run in a closed circuit, using a system of downfall and riser pipelines connected to a compact sediment injection- and separation unit as well as the centrifugal pump. The riser is equipped with pressure sensors, as well as temperature sensors, flow meter, concentration meter and high speed camera to allow comprehensive analyses of the flow regime and behavior of transported material within the flow. Additional mobile measurement devices allow wear and tear analyses of pipe material. This paper focuses on the determining factors of the tests leading to the design as well as the installation and trial of the test facility itself and explains the used components and work principles. INTRODUCTION Since the 1970s several research projects had been conducted investigating in the possibility of deep sea mining. In recent times projects for deep sea mining operations have started again, considering the rising demand on natural resources, especially raw earth elements. Yet projects like the Nautilus project on the deposit Solwara 1 [1], or Japanese projects focusing on the region of Okinawa [2] and Chinese projects [3] planning on depths of “only” about 2,500 up to 3,000 m. Until now no economical deep sea mining project was realized, due to the enormous difficulties of deep sea environments. Vertical material transport is one of the major challenges for the successful implementation of deep sea mining projects, considering transportation heights up to 5 km. The EU research project „Blue Mining” is focusing on sustainable solutions for deep sea mining operations, with one major goal being the advancement of Vertical Transport Systems or VTS [4]. Critical parts of the system would be identified and investigated to deliver solutions and higher the technology readiness level to a level were planning of a pilot project can be considered. At first case examples for mining projects of seafloor massive sulfides (SMS, 1,600 m water depth) and manganese nodules (MnN, 5,000 m water depth) had been calculated on basis of economical frame conditions, such as planned production rates to be efficient. As depicted in Figure 1 two major possible systems had been used for comparison, airlift system and pump system, considering multiple pump stations or single pumps. Based on the results and comparisons for the calculated vertical transport systems critical components and flow effects had been identified."

This study investigates the use of a horizontally-baffled column (7.6 cm inside diameter by 344.2 cm high) to reduce the ash content of a high ash bituminous coal. Tests were carried out to determine how the baffled column responded to changes in feed rate, reagent dosage, and feed quality, and to compare its performance with a conventional column installation in an operating plant. In this paper, the results of this investigation will be reviewed and discussed.

Details of the process and plants have also been published by Kurt Baum (5,6).

A computer model is developed for the problem of dispersal of dust (suspended particulate matter) resulting from blasting operations in surface mines. Undulated surface (lower boundary) simulation was carried through sixth order polynomial by least square approximation. Segmentwise terrain simulation was linearly added to build ground feature extending either side of the blast location. Assuming the initial dust concentration in the vertical column to. be uniform and treating the finite vertical line sources as a series of point sources to height, H varying from zero to top of the dust mushroom, integration was done of the concentration effects from H = 0 toL tan[0] (L = horizontal distance of the blast location and [0] is the angle of the top of dust cloud from the point of observation). Using frame of reference moving with the mean wind, the ground level 'concentration (GLC) has been computed over the undulated terrain. Standard deviation (s) of concentration has been parameterized based on mixed layer similarity theory in convective boundary layer.

"The development of a mining project necessarily progresses through many steps, beginning with the identification of a mineral resource and continuing through project construction. Several classifications of engineering study development are described, including preliminary economic assessment (PEA) or scoping studies, prefeasibility studies (PFS), feasibility studies (FS) and regulatory codes, each with a specific project organizational objective. This paper addresses the PEA, PFS and FS types of reports that are used by companies to evaluate projects, meet regulatory requirements and seek financing. The minimum requirements for engineering studies, focusing on the needs of financial institutions considering investment in a project, are outlined. IntroductionThe financing of mining projects in recent years has come under increased scrutiny by financial institutions owing primarily to an increasing percentage of projects whose capital expenditures had overrun project budgets or had failed to produce the economic returns anticipated during the project development process. Often, unfavorable project outcomes are not the result of widespread failures of the project engineering process but arise from inadequate engineering in limited specific areas of the project scope, such as overestimated mineral reserve, inadequate mine design, insufficient metallurgical testing or underestimated capital costs. Mill facilities and process infrastructure typically are responsible for up to 80 percent of the capital expenditures required by greenfield mining projects. They are often the project areas where capital costs are inadequately developed, and consequently are the areas highly scrutinized by financial institutions. This paper offers a perspective on the level of engineering expected by financial institutions as a prerequisite to committing support to developing mining projects.The evaluation of a mining project from exploration through development and production is a lengthy and complicated process. Mine development commitment activities for a potential project are initiated when a mineral resource is identified and continue through to the start of construction. The technical feasibility and the economic viability of each project are determined during the phases of mine development with more detailed engineering data required at each stage. Little knowledge is available that considers the effects of continuous miner position on the possible respirable dust exposure of the remote mining machine operator. Such information could be very useful for increasing the awareness of the remote operator as to those parts of an extended cut that generate higher levels of respirable dust. This data could be used to develop guidelines for positioning the remote operator to reduce his potential exposure. This work details the effects of continuous miner position on dust levels measured on the machine and at the remote continuous miner operator location.

Comminution, being the energy intensive part of a mining operation receives much scrutiny by cost controllers, CEO’s, investors and others as the mining industry goes “back to basics” to reverse the decline in productivity which occurred during the mining super cycle. Blasting is the first and lowest cost per ton stage in the comminution value chain. The basic principle that effective blast design can optimize fragmentation from the Run of Mine (ROM) ore muck pile to improve productivity through digging, loading and crushing to grinding and increase mine site profits has been well documented. Benefits of controlling fragmentation in the blast include reduced wear on equipment, faster loading, increased truck loads while detecting oversize rocks at the muck pile can reduce the frequency of a blocked primary crusher. A second basic principle is a measure of particle size distribution (PSD) at each unit operation in the comminution cycle allows engineers to manage blast design to produce fragmentation in the ROM ore most suitable to optimize downstream unit processes to improve mine site productivity and profits. Split-Online® systems have measured PSD of rocks on conveyors from the primary crusher to the SAG mill for over 20 years. Split-Engineering partnered with various mining companies to develop Split-ShovelCam® to automatically measure fragmentation from shovels and excavators working the ROM muck pile. This paper takes the reader “Back to Basics” by discussing the use of real time fragmentation analysis at the muck pile as an important parameter to optimize energy factors required for each blast. Case studies are given. INTRODUCTION The basics of mining are: • Explore for and find economic resources of valuable minerals • Mine rocks containing valuable minerals using blasting • Crush and grind rocks to liberate valuable minerals (comminution) • Recover valuable minerals for sale Comminution is an energy intensive process which accounts for a major proportion of mine site costs. Effective blasting can improve comminution and deliver significant reductions to mine site unit costs, (CEEC, 2016). Engineers, scientists, builders and even philosophers have long promoted the phrase “measure to manage”; the premise being “you can’t improve what you don’t measure”. Blast Engineers measure fragmentation in ROM ore for feedback to manage energy input in the design of blast patterns to optimize the ROM product size for downstream operations, whether they be for ROM Leach or feed into the primary crusher.

A common casualty of modern openpit mine optimization is the assurance that the resulting design is actually achievable. Optimized mine plans that consider value and a bare minimum of precedence constraints do not, in general, translate into practical, operational mine designs that can be used in the field. Ultimate pits may come to a sharp point at the bottom. Schedules may require taking small parcels of material from many disparate areas of the pit in a single period, and grade control polygons may be ragged, narrow and not minable with realistic equipment. In this paper, these three fundamental openpit mine optimization problems are addressed by encoding them as maximum satisfiability problems. Maximum satisfiability provides a useful framework for problems that are nonlinear and may guarantee the optimality that metaheuristics cannot.

The use of conveyors in large, open pit mines and their drawbacks are discussed. Technological developments such as long distance conveyors capable of handling large rocks are explored. The development and testing by the Bureau of Mines of a prototype crib and cable conveyor for handling large rocks are discussed, and possible modifications of the concept for a production model are examined.

Tunneling could be a major challenge to tunneling contractors as tunneling operations can be seriously affected by the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) performance. Specifying the appropriate TBM methodology, selection of systems and features, is critical for managing tunnel risks and contribute to successful tunneling project. The paper analyzes tunneling records from the recently completed City of Toronto’s Ashbridges Bay Treatment Outfall tunnel project and underlines the righteous selection of the TBM type and associated TBM systems in achieving good advance rates during tunnelling and managing project risks. The paper intends to draw attention of a few aspects of TBM technical specification importance and highlight the lessons learned from this process.
