A number autonomous operations is in place in several, mainly in fenced areas, where safety is assured by locking off the entire area for other traffic. However autonomy can be brought much further if functional safety is assured and a real mixed traffic of autonomous and manually operated vehicles is possible. MobileTronics has created a modular software and control framework for autonomous machines. The paper covers application examples in which the deterministic object recognition in combination with probabilistic algorithms and sensors is used as a basis for functional safe certification of mixed traffic autonomy.

A unique telemetry system was developed to monitor potentially unstable natural slopes above a residential area. Continuous interpretation of data transmitted from remote movement-sensitive devices and immediate communication of signficant changes to emergency personnel were made possible by a readily available "home" computer. Even though the computer based system was originally developed for a non- mining application, it could be used with little or no modification to monitor ground control instrumentation in open pit and underground situations.

In reviewing available vacuum filtration equipment in this paper, several types of filters have been included which are probably not familiar to operators in the mining industry. However, it was felt that these units might be of interest in the event that an application should arise for the filtration of a product in the future that does not exist today. In addition, exposure of our industry to equipment used in other industries might have a tendency to be thought provoking and perhaps lead to the development of equipment and/or applications in our industry which do not necessarily exist at this time. Most innovations in filtration equipment have been confined to the improvement or design change of components and accessories, particularly reflecting the availability of materials of construction that have been developed. Recent developments in the application of horizontal belt filters have been innovative. The application of this unit as a substitute for or an adjunct to thickeners in a CO circuit can certainly be innovative and perhaps provide a basis for reduction in capital and operating costs in this area. For example, mill tails are generally pumped at the highest possible density that will adequately flow. Tailings ponds and dams with their attendant design requirements are based upon this estimated water volume. Availability of a much dryer, non-flowing filter cake opens up several new options for disposal. Considerable cost savings could result in the design and planning of disposal areas for containing dryer material. . No attempt has been made in this paper to provide a manual for the operation of all of the many types of equipment that are available. Rather, the paper tries to present an overview.

Historically, boulders are a frequent source of problem in soft ground tunneling. It is important to attempt to make an assessment of the nature and quantity of the boulders, although in many cases, it will be impossible to do so with great accuracy. Boulders, can pose major problems for TBMs in terms of slowing down or halting the tunnel advance, cutter damage, and abrasive wear. Although proper selection of the TBM and the cutterhead can reduce the risks, ground uncertainties still cannot be eliminated. The paper reviews a case study of a 3480 mm diameter EPB-TBM in Toronto utilized for completion of 2.5 km tunnel in Glacial Till, crossing the CP railway, HWY 401, a creek, and a confined aquifer. Alignment consists of multiple horizontal curves including small radius curves (r=210 m) at shafts breakthrough. An unexpected boulder cluster lead the contractor to experience extreme damages to the screw conveyor, RFJ system and causing a crack in main motor plate which resulted in losing one of the six main motors. This paper reviews contractor’s solutions and includes discussion on specific claim resolution method used in this project that can be of great value in preparation of specification and GBR for similar projects.

The development of transportation systems for mined materials has historically been characterized by steadily increasing sizes in basic hauling units. This is especially true for open pit mines for which success is dependent upon the economical transportation of vast quantities of material. The depletion of high grade ore reserves has mandated a tremendous increase in the size and complexity of the ore haulage systems necessary for open pit mines, These increased demands were served by rail haulage systems in the early large open pit copper mines while later developed properties opted for the flexibility and lower initial costs of truck haulage. Now, we find the trucks being displaced as large overland belt conveyors tackle the problem of handling these ever larger quantities of low-grade ores with accompanying overburden ratios that can run as high as 10:1 or even 15:1. The basic development of large conveyors with shiftable sections and modular belts has generally taken place overseas, during the last few decades. The coal fields of central Europe proved an ideal testing ground for conveyor innovation because the low density and natural friability of the material created an ideal medium for transporting by belt conveyor. Now these proven ideas are being considered for and implemented into both the soft and hard rock mining industries of the United States.

Corporate responsibility already encompasses safety and compliance. No longer will companies be able to use differing standards of care to miners based on the country in which they are working. This is not only an issue of social license, but one of global risk management.

The mining and minerals extraction industries have often been demonized by the public as industries that put profits and production before people. It is true that the inherent danger of the work has led to more fatal accidents than anyone associated with the industry would care to remember. But, in stark contrast to what has often been said, the truth of the matter is safety is now the top priority of every miner, from the face of the longwall to the executive boardroom. Without safety, nothing else matters. This message was told and retold by representatives from some of the world?s top mining and petroleum companies from Oct. 11-13 during the inaugural Safety and Reliability in the Mining and Resources Industries Conference in Calgary, Canada. The meeting was hosted jointly by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME). It was the first of a series of conferences to focus on these important topics. Next year, the conference will be held in Minneapolis, MN from Nov. 13-15.

Coal is a low-cost fuel with high calorific value. Statistically, the global coal mining industry suffered 12,489 fatalities in 104 reported mining accidents from coal dust explosions during 1900 to 2020. This review article discusses the occurrence, mechanism and explosibility parameters of coal dust explosions and presents a literature survey of the laboratory and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation methods of studying them, as well as a comparison of the two methods.

In flotation practices, as particles become finer, such as smaller than 20 μm, process efficiency declines markedly. Selective agglomeration of fine particles is a technique to enhance the recovery of fine valuable minerals in flotation circuits. Different agglomerating methods have been introduced and tested. One method that has recently received much attention is to make use of magnetic force to aggregate fine particles. A selective aggregation of fine paramagnetic particles, such as sulfide minerals, can be achieved in the high-intensity magnetic field prior to or during flotation. The method is simple, selective and effective for fine particles and has low operational cost, though a minimum magnetic susceptibility for fine grains is required to promote the process. In this paper, the implementation of the ProFlote magnetic conditioning device in Boliden’s Garpenberg old concentrator in Sweden, where a complex massive sulfide ore is treated, is presented and discussed based on Boliden’s Garpenberg plant. The results showed an increase in the flotation recovery of fine valuable minerals. Zinc (Zn) production was increased by between 1,100 and 1,500 t/a, while salable yearly silver (Ag) production was increased by 1,500 kg. The copper (Cu) grade in the final concentrate was increased by 1 percent, while reductions in its Zn and lead (Pb) grades were obtained. The most common experimental approach of studying one variable at a time while holding all others constant is extremely inefficient. Use of statistical methods enables engineers and scientists to obtain meaningful information with the fewest experiments, reducing cost and wasted effort. In particular, the Taguchi method can be more efficient than traditional full factorial experiment designs, as it can study more variables with fewer nuts, and it is more robust against process "noise." Taguchi designs are also simple to formulate and the results can be analyzed by simple PC spreadsheets. The role and benefits of using the Taguchi method in experiments to develop and optimize processes is discussed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted preliminary investigations on the leaching of phosphate ores obtained from deposits in the western United States using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) in the presence of methanol. Phosphate extractions in excess of 80 pct were obtained on an ore sample from Pocatello, ID. Initial leaching studies using the ore as received yielded extraction levels of approximately 35 pct. However, when the sample was ground for as little as 5 min in a rod mill, in methanol, then treated with HzS04, 82 pct extraction was achieved. The R2O3-P2O5 (R2O3 = Al2O3 + Fe2O3) ratio of the starting material was 0.11. Solubilized products after leaching exhibited an R2O3-P2O5 ratio of 0.02, which is well within desired limits. These results illustrate the potential of acid-alcohol leaching for recovering phosphate values from marginal-grade ores and as an alternative to methods involving current beneficiation techniques that yield lower phosphate recoveries.

Estimated reserves of high-grade iron ore at Serra dos Carajás total 16 billion metric tons and have an average grade of 66.7 percent iron, 2.2 percent combined silica and alumina, and 0.05 percent phosphorous on a dry basis. Hematite is predominant and no significant sulfur or other deleterious elements are present. Figure 1 illustrates the comparative magnitude of the Carajás reserves. Serra dos Carajás is located in northern Brazil, about 550 kilometers southwest of Belém, Pará. It is six degrees south of the equator between the Xingu and Tocantins Rivers. Both rivers flow northward toward the Amazon River. The greater part of the area is covered by thick jungle, and the most practical means of access is by air. Figures 2 and 3 show the location of Serra dos Carajás. Figure 4 shows the distribution of the major iron-ore deposits.

Evaporation and crystallization processes are used extensively in the mining industry to provide many pro-ducts. In the case of solution mining evaporators are used to concentrate, or to concentrate and crystallize the raw materials being mined. In the case of underground, or strip mining dissolving and crystallization are used in many processes in order to purify the ore to saleable materials. Presently evaporators and crystallizers are being used in the production of sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium carbonate, sodium sulfate, lithium chemicals, aluminum, and many others. The evaporator is a device designed to remove water or solvent from a solution. In an evaporator the energy released by steam condensing on one side of the heat transfer surface is transferred to the product solution on the other side of the heat transfer surface. As long as the boiling temperature of the product liquor is below the condensing temperature of the steam, the product solution will absorb heat. This heat absorption causes vaporization of the water (solvent) in the product solution resulting in concentration of the product. The simplest evaporator is the single effect evaporator. If we assume the feed introduced into the single effect evaporator is at its boiling point, ignore radiation losses, and assume the steam into the heat exchanger is dry and saturated, then the heat transferred will correspond to the latent heat of vaporization. Therefore, one kilogram of condensing steam will produce one kilogram of evaporation. Economies in energy usage compared to the single effect evaporator can be made by using multiple effect evaporators, or vapor recompression evaporators.

J.R. Hillebrand From the abstract, "A realistic ore deposition model to serve as a conceptual framework." Further, on page 246, "The first area of study was the Josephine peridotite, now identified as an ophiolite terrane, located in northern California and south-western Oregon (Fig. 3). Here, it was felt that we could test the models shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and, if successful, expand the model and test it in other chromite districts in the US and around the world." My comments refer only to chromite deposits in Europe and the Middle East. First, I question that may chromite deposits occur in the idealized ophiolite section shown in Fig. 1. Second, although some podiform deposits (referring to morphology) have been important (Guleman, Turkey, for example), the stratiform deposits are of greater importance in tonnage and frequently grade. Examples include Nada, Yugoslavia; Bulqiza, Albania; Xerolivado, Greece; Saranovsk, Russia; and Abdasht, Iran. Reply by J.C. Wynn Mr. Hillebrand raises two issues that deserve a serious response. One issue is basically subjective and the other is ultimately political. First, the question of where (and how many) podiform chromite deposits are found in the idealized ophiolite section of Dickey (1975). The Dickey model is still perhaps somewhat controversial (Panayoutou, 1980), but our experience in the Josephine ophiolite of northern California (Wynn, 1980; and Albers, 1983) shows that the model works well there. Virtually all the chromite is found in dunite lenses in the tectonite peridotite (harzburgite). Since there are few complete ophiolites exposed in the world, the model will probably never satisfy everyone. The degree of acceptance is a function of any individual's subjective experience. Second, it is well known that stratiform chromite contributes more than 95% of the chromite reserves presently known in the world, and it could be reasonably argued that there is no point in exploring for or exploiting podiform deposits further. The title of the paper, however, was in part 'strategic minerals geophysical research'; chromite is considered a strategic and critical mineral of the US and many other industrialized nations. Stratiform deposits in South Africa and Zimbabwe account for most of the chromite reserves in the world. Unfortunately, experience in modern times with substantial price fluctuations and even resource cartels dictates the wisdom of identifying and maintaining a national chromite reserve, irrespective of the cost. An improved exploration methodology is an essential element in this strategic objective. The Coteau Properties Company's Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mining operation located near Beulah, North Dakota. Coteau, a wholly owned subsidiary of The North American Coal Corporation, produces more than 13.5 million tonnes per year, ranking it among the largest mines in North America. In 1993, Coteau ranked seventh in terms of annual coal sales, becoming the largest mine outside the Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming. However, for the Freedom Mine to stand among these Powder River heavyweights, Coteau over-came several obstacles, including a coal seam with three quarters the heating value and overburden to coal ratios three times higher than the Powder River mines. Coteau's ability to compete has been built around a program of continuous productivity improvement, cost efficiency, and innovation. This report highlights a few of the major improvements implemented in recent years.

Latin America is in the path of economic growth characterized by increased privatization, joint-venture projects, and reduced trade barriers. Privatization is changing the industrial operating mode from Government-owned/Government-operated to a privately-owned/government-regulated regime. The establishment of joint ventures, such as in construction and management of infrastructure, energy and mining projects, and deregulated industries (electricity/gas/ telecommunications), is now a common practice in the region. These changes, coupled with the growing awareness of environmental protection issues, have led to a sincere effort on the part of the countries of Latin America to establish reasonable environmental regulations and controls (RERCs) for all industries, including mining and energy, for the benefit of present and future generations. However, RERCs require further consideration of many factors with respect to environmental, geologic, economic, and social impacts in the region. The process must find a balance between the need to sustain profitable operations and the need to adequately protect the environment. While striving to find a balance between continued industrial profitability and environmental protection, the RERCs must be scientifically sound, pragmatic, flexible, and enforceable. There has been worldwide attention focused on the environment, and international symposia have been held on such issues as global warming, water pollution, air pollution, and hazardous wastes. Organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and the Organization of American States have performed rather extensive studies on the environment for various industries and activities, and have developed some broad general plans to address environmental concerns. This technical information is available for the asking, and should be considered a starting point for countries embarking on the passage and enforcement of their own RERCs.

In response to the Natural Resources Canada “Crush It Challenge”, Corem partnered with the University of British Columbia and led a project to develop and demonstrate the use of high-pressure grinding to replace the workhorse of the industry, wet ball milling, with high-pressure grinding. Two plant case studies, a small tonnage gold recovery operation, and a large tonnage copper recovery operation, were carried out. Plant circuit performances were compared to pilot plants operated on the same circuit feed set up to represent the novel equipment and flowsheet that was developed to produce separation circuit feed. Numerous obstacles to industrial implementation of highpressure grinding in this role which were recognized at the outset of the work were successfully addressed. In both cases, comminution equipment energy savings alone, and final stage total circuit energy savings, exceeded 60% and 50%, respectively. Downstream mineral separation performance was the same or better.

America's bulk commodity transportation systems have taken on a new look in the 1970's and 1980's. Railroad systems, barge lines providing inland and intra- coastal waterway transportation, and Great Lakes carriers have undergone substantial changes through mergers and acquisitions, consolidations of ownership and control, and construction of modern intermodal transportation facilities linking railroads and water carriers. The new look has generated some concerns and opportunities with regard to producers and shippers of bulk commodities which are characterized by the necessity of moving large quantities of heavy materials long distances. Clearly such transportation requirements call for efficient railroad and water carrier services. Shippers of commodities like coal, grain, .chemicals, minerals, ores, forest products, petroleum products, and heavy manufactured goods find reductions in transportation competition lead to concerns that rates charged by carriers will not be sufficiently constrained by market forces. At the same time, new policies on contracting for railroad services can lead to greater efficiencies, a rewarding opportunity for carriers which should be shared with shippers and consumers of bulk commodities. Then, of course, there's a related problem that in the absence of effective competition, the benefits of increased carrier efficiency will not be passed on, in part, to shippers and consumers, causing losses in markets for producers.
