The carbothermic reduction of celestite is the first step in producing many strontium products. The way materials move in the rotary kiln has an essential effect on the carbothermic reduction efficiency as well as the temperature. In this study, the reduction of celestite ore and excess carbon blend in a laboratory-scale rotary kiln was investigated. In the experiments carried out at three different temperatures, the rotational speed and slope of the furnace tube were altered, and their effects on the reaction efficiency were examined. The leachability of the reduced powders and the content of the unburned coke indicated the optimal parameters for the reaction.When the speed was increased to 10 rpm, the powders weremoremobile in the stack and could react more easily with the furnace atmosphere. According to the results, celestite can be reduced by carbon at temperatures of 1000–1200 °C, at rates of between 5% and 75%. The maximumreaction yield (75%) was obtained with a slope of 2° and a rotational speed of 6 rpm at 1100 °C.

Estimating groundwater inflows in rock deep tunnels is critical to the safety of personnel constructing the tunnel and the cost of construction. This paper presents two case studies for estimating steady-state groundwater inflows into deep rock tunnels. The case studies included the Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels. In this paper, statistical methods were applied to packer test data obtained from exploratory borings during geotechnical site investigations. A semi-empirical procedure was utilized for estimating groundwater inflows into these deep rock tunnels. It is the most widely used method/procedure in the tunnel industry. The Chattahoochee and Nancy Creek tunnels are deep rock tunnels which exhibit radial flow conditions. For the radial flow condition, a statistical analysis presented in this paper indicates that the semi-empirical procedure works well; however, variations in the procedure and/or an insufficient amount of testing could lead to underestimations of the inflow quantities. Packer test data plotted in histograms were observed in all cases to be log-normally distributed for the radial flow condition. Modeling using Monte Carlo simulations was observed to be an effective tool for removing irregularities in the distribution of the data and incorporating high-end permeability data to derive reasonable groundwater inflow estimates. INTRODUCTION At some point in the design and development stage of a mineral venture, the assay laboratory building, its interior layout, and major pieces of analytical equipment must be specified for construction or purchase. Even the most experienced chemist would have difficulty in proposing useful specifications without a good deal of investigation into the kinds of analytical tasks that the laboratory will be expected to address, the probable workload, and the operating time constraints. This chapter will provide a logical approach to laboratory design that starts with such an investigation. Specific examples throughout the chapter are drawn from the author's tenure as Chief Chemist at Barrick Mercur Gold Mines, Mercur, Utah, from 1982 to 1985. It is necessary to understand the nature of a modern production laboratory, and to recognize that its operations bear more resemblance to its parent processing plant than to a research, teaching, or custom analytical laboratory. The assay lab is a processing facility unto itself, where samples and reagents are the raw materials, and assay results are the final product. Its most efficient operating mode is as an assembly line, treating samples in a nearly continuous flow. Nevertheless , there are important differences between the lab and the process plant. The products - assays - are individually unknown quantities until they are "produced.' This can vastly complicate quality control compared to the process plant. Capital costs are general 1 y small compared to the plant, but the ratio of operating costs to capital costs for a laboratory is often very much higher than for the plant. This is due to the labor intensive nature of analytical work. For instance, during Fiscal Year 1984 at Barrick Mercur Gold Mines, labor costs for the laboratory staff represented about five percent of the total labor budget, while the laboratory building and equipment represented only about six-tenths of one percent of the original start-up capital. Waste phosphatic clay presents a difficult disposal problem and a significant loss of P2O5. Recent developments make this study on the use of phosphatic clay as a feed material for H3PO4 production worthwhile. (a) New data from Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute (FIPR) suggest that the Bclay^ waste can be effectively treated by improved solid separation coupled with flotation to produce feed material for recovering additional phosphate. (b) The use of BOLI Flowsheet^ provides capability to predict performance of aqueous-based processes for a range of possible operating conditions. Using the new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enabled the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current P2O5 ore deposits. Predictions using OLI Flowsheet were able to identify process conditions that effectively overcome the difficulty of high Mg content of phosphatic clay. Estimated manufacturing cost in the current study lead to valuation of the P2O5 content of the phosphatic clay recovered/utilized at 60 to 70% of that of the phosphate rock feed material currently used. Phosphatic clay should be considered as a valuable material that is currently given zero value. The St Lawrence Seaway, a deep-water canal system between Montreal and Lake Ontario, was opened for navigation on April 25, 1959. Prior to the opening of the new Seaway, small boats known as canalers and a few deep-sea carriers, primarily from Norway since World War II, were the only ships able to journey past Montreal into Lake Ontario through the old Canadian St. Lawrence canal system. Thus it was necessary for many tons of bulk and general cargo to be shipped all-rail to and from Atlantic ports or to be transhipped to and from canalers. With the opening of the new Seaway, large Great Lakes bulk carriers and a much larger percentage of the world's shipping fleet are now able to sail directly from the sea to the heart of industrial North America. In this paper, the historical events leading up to the construction of the Seaway and the physical nature of the Great Lakes transportation system are briefly reviewed. Following this, an attempt is made to evaluate the effects of the new Seaway on Canada's mineral industry. Because the Seaway has been in operation for only one season, this paper must be considered only an interim report. Because of the importance of the Seaway to iron ore, this commodity will be dealt with in detail, although the effect on other mineral commodities such as coal, petroleum, nonferrous ores, iron and steel will be mentioned. Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate, has a history of usefulness to man dating back several thousand years, and a worldwide industry has been built on the mining and processing of this versatile industrial mineral. However, anhydrite, the other prin¬cipal calcium sulfate mineral, has very limited use, so much so that separate statistics for it are not always kept, but are usually included with those for gypsum. Although often found in close association, the two minerals have important chemical differences in that anhydrite is the anhy¬drous form of calcium sulfate (CaSO4) whereas gypsum is the dihydrate (CaSo4.2H20). These two molecules of combined water result in significant differences in hardness, density, and solubility of the two minerals. Of most importance, however, is the difference in thermal properties wherein gypsum, upon the application of a modest amount of heat, can be converted to the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate (CaSO4 '21H20) or plaster of paris, an intermediate product upon which is based over 90% of the value of all calcium sulfate end products. Anhydrite, on the other hand, is inert at these temperatures and its uses have been limited to only those few cases where calcium sulfate in the anhydrous form may have an advan¬tage. The earliest known use of gypsum plaster dates back some 5000 years to the time of the Pharaohs of Egypt who had discovered that gypsum rock, when exposed to fire, broke down into a powder which, when mixed with water, would form a putty that could be plastered on a rough mud brick or stone wall to make a smooth finish. It was used down through the centuries in a limited way for ornamental purposes, but did not achieve wide acceptance because of the quick (25 to 30 min) setting or hardening time which made it difficult to use. The first real understanding of gypsum chemistry was developed in France about 1755, and the gradual growth of its present utilization dates from that time. In the United States, the first utilization of gypsum was to grind it to a fine material for use as a soil conditioner at about the time of the Revolutionary War, and the term land plaster for ground gypsum was coined and has remained in use. Another cementitious material-lime or calcium oxide-had become the usual plastering material, but by about 1870 a method for retarding the set of gypsum plaster was discovered; today it has almost completely replaced lime as a plastering material. In recent years, gypsum products sold in the United States have reached a total valuation of approximately $2 Gpy as illustrated in [Table 1].

A major process control system is in some ways like a complex organism. The extremities, (that is, field instruments) are exposed to many hazards and suffer malfunctions of relatively minor and repetitive nature. Here I equate a stuck valve or dead transmitter with a skin abrasion or cut. The maintenance and repair of the extremities can be done by technicians with basic but thorough knowledge of relatively few problems and their solutions. Here I equate with administering Band-Aids and aspirin. On the other extreme, when the master control device (such as a computer) fails, one does not attempt home remedies. A "brain" specialist is called in. It is, however, crucial that the patient be able to clearly describe his symptoms. Getting down to the case at hand, a complex system consisting of field instruments, instrument racks, interface equipment, and perhaps a computer, may require maintenance at all levels. At the field equipment end where physical damage, corrosive atmospheres, reconfiguration, and routine calibration checks are common, the customer has the opportunity to develop a competent staff of maintenance people. The relatively high maintenance activity assures competence through repetition.

"In April 2016, MSHA began requiring the use of continuous personal dust monitors (cPDMs) to monitor and measure respirable mine dust exposures to underground coal miners. After the cPDM’s implementation, mine operators discovered that it interfered with proximity detection systems (PDSs), thus exposing miners to potential striking and pinning hazards from continuous mining machines. NIOSH was sought out by MSHA and mining industry stakeholders to determine how the cPDM and PDS interact with each other. Accordingly, NIOSH investigated existing standards, developed test protocols, designed experiments, and conducted lab evaluations. Some interferences were observed to be caused by electromagnetic interference (EMI) from the cPDM. Results showed that there was no significant interference when the cPDM and the miner-wearable component of the PDS were separated by distances of 6 inches or greater. In this study, the cPDM and PAD needed to be at least 6 inches apart in order for them to be used simultaneously and reduce interference potential. INTRODUCTION Underground coal miners are exposed to a variety of hazards on a daily basis such as coal dust exposure, high noise levels, roof and rib falls, the potential for fires and explosions, and operating and working with heavy machinery. One of the hazardous jobs is operating or working nearby a continuous mining machine (CMM). According to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) statistics, 40 miners have been fatally struck or pinned by a CMM since 1984. In an effort to prevent future striking and pinning fatalities from occurring, proximity detection systems have been developed and are required on all operating CMMs in underground coal mines, with the exception of full-face CMMs, by 2018 (1,2). Proximity detection systems (PDSs) are designed to alarm miners and stop machine motion in order to protect miners from being struck, pinned or crushed by CMMs(3). Currently, MSHA-approved PDSs, installed on CMMs, are based on the principle of magnetic flux density (B-field) (4,5). The system generates a magnetic field around a CMM and determines the relative distance a miner is from the CMM based on a detected magnetic flux density. A PDS typically consists of multiple magnetic field generators mounted at different places around the CMM, and personal alarm devices (PADs), which are worn by the miners to detect the magnetic flux density. When a miner, wearing a PAD, gets closer to the machine, the PAD detects a stronger magnetic field from the generators and detects a weaker magnetic field when a miner moves away from the machine. The magnetic field generators installed on CMMs typically produce modulated magnetic wave signals at frequencies between 10 kHz and 120 kHz. The magnetic fields are measured by three small magnetic coil antennas mounted on orthogonal axes inside of the PAD worn by the miner. According to Faraday’s Law, the changing magnetic field induces a voltage in each coil antenna, and the voltage values are transmitted from the PAD back to a controller on the CMM wirelessly, typically at a frequency between 400 MHz and 2.5 GHz. These values are then used to determine the distance between the miner and the generators of the machine. Typically this information is used to determine when a miner wearing a PAD is in a warning zone or stop zone which would trigger different alarms and actions such as slowing the machine down or stopping it."

Historically most mine management teams have been forced to operate in a more or less subjective manner. The objectives of mine management are simple and clear. Like other operational managements, mine management teams have the traditional well defined goals of improving efficiency and production while decreasing costs. Unlike other operational managements however, mining teams deal regularly with a vast assortment of uncertainties caused by: - Key production tools being mobile and widely dispersed, and - Non-uniform mining conditions At best in most operations these conditions cause obstacles to productivity and at the same time cause long delay in managment awareness of the obstacles. Planning with delayed feedback of information about necessary deviations is incomplete planning. For these reasons increased operational efficiency remains a constant though somewhat elusive goal.

Alluvial valley floors constitute a valuable land resource and have been important to ranching operations in semiarid western United States. This resource may be in jeopardy locally if the alluvial deposits are disturbed by surface mining of coal deposits. Erosion problems caused by poor land-use practices can cause trenching of the unconsolidated alluvium with a consequent lowering of the water table and depletion of soil moisture needed to support vegetation. Historical evidence of this sequence of events is abundant in geologic literature and serves as the basis for assessing potential impacts of surface mining. The potential geomorphic impacts of surface mining on alluvial valley floors with regard to fluvial processes are: (1) disruption of the longitudinal profile followed by valley trenching and high sediment yields downstream and (2) replacement of the excavated alluvium with unconsolidated material that does not have similar physical characteristics and may be susceptible to erosion. Mining may disrupt the existing hydrologic framework affecting streamflow, ground-water levels and water quality of both surface water and ground water. Although functional hydrologic and geomorphic processes are similar, each valley represents a complex environment that does not submit to broad generalizations.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) uses light-scattering real-time dust monitors (nephelometers) in its research to develop dust controls to reduce respirable silica dust overexposures in miners. Recently, the model 1500-pDR, an active nephelometer (i.e., with cyclone and pump configuration), was introduced by Thermo Scientific. Testing was completed to ensure compatibility with the metal/nonmetal mine dust personal sampling unit (M/NMDPSU). Results of testing demonstrated that gravimetric concentrations measured from the 1500-pDR are comparable to the gravimetric concentrations measured using the M/NMDPSU, without need for correction, under commonly observed dust loading conditions.

Deep well disposal of selected industrial wastes has been proved feasible and acceptable in the New Orleans area by several industries including Shell Oil Company's Norco Refinery and Chemical Plant where three of the six successful disposal wells in this area are operating. Well design and procedures for restoration of capacity are based, in most cases, on the principles of brine injection developed by oil producers in South Louisiana. Geological formations in the Gulf Coast area are suited to this type of injection because receiving strata are porous, isolated from sources of potable water and their water is compatible with the liquid wastes to be injected. This method of disposal is a simple, complete and economical solution to the problems presented by certain hard to treat wastes.

We in Kennecott are well aware that Alaskans are interested in the progress of our project at Ruby Creek. We would very much like to be able to present you with a final report at this time and tell you about a new mine. I'm afraid, however, that it will be several years at best before such a report can be made. This, then, is an interim report to describe briefly some of our findings to date, and to acquaint you with some of the problems, both geologic and economic, which must 5e resolved favorably before we can talk about a mine. There are several things about this project which make it unusual and interesting to those of us who have been connected with it. Firstly, there is the fundamental importance to Alaska, in the present stage of its economic history, of any undertaking which offers promise of turning a natural resource into a competitive export product. I am sure all of us would get a lot more satisfaction out of having a part in bringing in a new mine in Alaska than we would out of adding another one to the long list in, say, Arizona.

The percentage depletion deduction on Federal Income Tax Returns under the provisions of the 1939 Internal Revenue Code and of Sections 611 to Section 615, inclusive, of the revenue act of 1954, have created innumerable administrative difficulties, and a new interpretation of "gross income from the property" in that the Courts have expanded the ideas of what constitutes "gross income from the property" to a degree unheard of and unthought of prior to the enactment of these two codes. Originally, under the Revenue Acts of 1917, 1918, and 1920 depletion was allowable, based upon mine valuations as of March 1, 1913; if the mine was owned prior to March 1, 1913; upon cost, as of the date of acquisition if purchased subsequent to March 1, 1913; and upon a "discovery" basis if the mine was discovered after March 1, 1913, The "jab" for mine valuations as of March 1, 1913 and for discovery valuations and depletion was not as bad as it has been made out to be. Thousands of valuations and estimates of reserves were made and agreed upon between taxpayers and Internal Revenue Service engineers and as the years went on the answers have been found to be "reasonable." However, human nature being what it is each case was a battle of wits - of a sort - and many resulted in severe differences of opinion and litigation. As tax rates increased the situation was not bettered. I could talk for several hours on this phase of depletion but it is all past now andwould not give any real service or better understanding of the matter.

"The mining industry tends to focus on very large numbers, whether it’s talking in terms of size of deposits, tons of material mined, the equipment used or the dollars spent. The numbers associated with mining projects are often in the hundreds of millions, but sometimes it’s the little things that can have the biggest impact.Take, for example, the Rosemont Copper Project in Arizona. Owned by HudBay Minerals, the Rosemont Copper project, when in production, is expected to be one of the largest copper mines in the United States, accounting for about 10 percent of total copper production with annual production expected to be 110 Mt/a (243 million lbs/year). However, the project is currently mired in a years-long permitting process. At the 2017 SME Arizona Conference in Tucson, AZ, Kathy Arnold, director of environmental and regulatory affairs for Hudbay Minerals, spoke about the project and the efforts to get it into production.She opened her presentation with the unfortunate news that her 2017 presentation would not be that much different than the 2016, 2015 or 2014 presentations she gave to the same conference. That’s because, as of Dec. 4, 2017, the project had been in the permitting process for 3,797 days, more than 10 years. The process began when Rosemont submitted its initial mine plan in 2006 and a revised one in 2017. The official start to Rosemont Copper’s National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) started in 2008.In June 2017, the project received its Final Record of Decision from the U.S. Forest Service, moving it a step closer to production. Yet it still faces stiff opposition from opponents while it works to secure the Clean Water Act Permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and to complete its final mine plan of operations.In her presentation, Arnold said the long process taught her many lessons, including approaching things with a different mindset. More than 130 pages worth of public comments have been collected over the years. The concerns expressed range from lighting issues to pavement to preserving land for a jaguar that was spotted on the property and named El Jefe.“A lot of things that people worry about seem to be small things, but we had to have a different mindset and be open-minded to the concerns,” Arnold said. “That is the commitment we made.”"

Anthracite mine refuse, or culm dump material as it is sometimes called, is the waste material resulting from the sizing and cleaning of run-of-mine deep and strip-mined anthracite coal. It may also contain mine rock, carbonaceous shale, pyrite, and other debris from mining operations. This material is generally stored in piles or banks, some of which are over 100 years old. Many of the older banks contain a considerable amount of good coal, particularly in the finer size ranges, since these sizes did not have any particular economic value in the early days of anthracite mining. Today, the refuse material from a cleaning operation must be piled in an orderly fashion and in such a way as to minimize the tendency to ignite. There are well over 400 of these banks in the anthracite region containing over 1100 million tons of refuse located in the north-eastern part of Pennsylvania. This paper presents the results of an analysis and summary of relevant literature on the mechanism of cementation of metals in acidic aqueous media, with the aim of reconsidering the conventional assumptions. The simplicity of the process as a mere galvanic metal displacement is discussed, and the real effects of pH and hydrogen pressure in different cases assessed. Finally, an alternative mechanism scheme with respect to the role of hydrogen species, in agreement with reported data, is proposed.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the Gays in which- the policies of the U.S. government, mining companies and third world countries affect each other with regard to the availability of minerals. The interaction involves U.S. policy towards the mining industry, the policies of the companies themselves, and the policies of third world countries towards the U.S. and multinational companies. It is assumed in this discussion that U.S. policy will continue to be to seek certain minerals from abroad rather than attempt to develop domestic sources for all its requirements. This would seem to make sense both from the standpoint of cost, and for preserving what domestic resources there are so as to maintain some degree of market leverage. In today's jargon, this means greater dependency on the "third world", which, for this discussion, includes virtually all the nations in Africa, South America and Asia. Concern for availability raises the important distinction between dependency and vulnerability, and as the Director of the Bureau of Mines has pointed out, the two are not the same. Dependency is not neccessarily a bad thing; it is vulnerability that counts (Norman, 1980)

The Narragansett Bay Commission Phase III CSO Program includes construction of the 11,600-foot long, 30-foot ID, deep rock Pawtucket Tunnel in Rhode Island. This paper provides an overview of the Design Build Project features and highlight some of the important design considerations, features, and innovations, including geologic conditions and related TBM design, and deep shaft and tunnel segment designs. The paper provides the most recent updates on some of the project construction activities including TBM tunnel progress and retrieval schemes, tunnel pump station and deep vertical shaft liner installations, SEM construction, and microtunneling for the longest adit using Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar pipes.
