Slurry walls, also known as diaphragm walls, are commonly used as temporary and/ or permanent support of excavation for construction of shafts in soft ground. Through case history, this paper demonstrates economical benefits of disregarding long-term structural contribution of the slurry walls particularly in severe environmental condition. In addition, for temporary slurry wall shaft systems, possibility of using steel fiber, synthetic fiber or additives in lieu of temperature/shrinkage reinforcement is discussed with detailed analysis. Finally, the paper will be concluded by introducing unreinforced slurry wall shaft system using newly developed/patented concrete additive.

An ongoing problem for industry in Korea is effective removal of heavy metals from and safe disposal of spent power plant fly ash. This research endeavor attempts to develop selective separation of Ni from leach liquor using a selective chemical precipitation method. The research was conducted by changing two variables, the pH and the concentration of ions in solution. The effect of other ions present in the system on the separation efficiency of Ni species was also investigated by adjusting OH and NH3 concentrations. In the pH range of 7-9, the chemical precipitation method produced a high yield of Ni by precipitation from the fly ash leach liquor.

Panel caving is an underground bulk mining method that utilizes gravitational force for mining massive, steeply dipping, and deep-seated ore deposits at a lower operating cost. To control dust and gas emissions entering the production level during the extraction of ore from the draw points in a panel cave, relatively negative pressure is created in the cave by installing an exhaust fan in the exhaust drift located on top of the cave. Since caving is a dynamic process, the design of an effective ventilation system is a challenging task, and therefore, estimation of airflow resistance offered by the broken rock inside the cave is critical. The complex and dynamic nature of caving also makes it difficult to predict the airflow resistance by using traditional approaches. This study investigates the effect of changes in the bulk porosity of the broken rock on the cave airflow resistance using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. The results show an inverse relationship between the cave airflow resistance and the bulk cave porosity. The pressure-quantity characteristic curves presented in this paper provide valuable information for sizing and operating an exhaust fan used for a mature panel cave ventilation.

In recent years, economies of scale have continued to drive copper projects to larger throughputs to offset depleting lower grade resources. A decade ago, there were only a small number of projects that stretched beyond 100 kt/d (110,000 stpd) throughput rates. Today, and moving forward, virtually all the major copper projects are sized beyond this, with throughput rates up to 250 kt/d (275,000 stpd) now under evaluation for a number of key projects in Chile and Peru. This paper explores the development from the 160 m3 (5,650 cu ft) flotation cells, through to the 257 m3 (9,076 cu ft) cells and to the current 660 m3 (23,380 cu ft) machines. The contributions of specific copper concentrators to this growth phase are reviewed in this article. The historical basis of flotation machine scale-up is also briefly discussed. Metallurgical results as well as layout, maintenance and operational aspects are highlighted.

Longwall face ventilation is an important component of the overall coal mine ventilation system. Increased production rates due to higher-capacity mining equipment tend to also increase methane emission rates from the coal face, which must be diluted by the face ventilation. Increases in panel length, with some mines exceeding 6,100 m (20,000 ft), and panel width provide additional challenges to face ventilation designs. To assess the effectiveness of current face ventilation practices at a study site, a face monitoring study with continuous monitoring of methane concentrations and automated recording of longwall shearer activity was combined with a tracer gas test on a longwall face. The study was conducted at a U.S. longwall mine operating in a thick, bituminous coal seam and using a U-type, bleederless ventilation system. Multiple gob gas ventholes were located near the longwall face. These boreholes had some unusual design concepts, including a system of manifolds to modify borehole vacuum and flow and completion depths close to the horizon of the mined coalbed that enabled direct communication with the mine atmosphere. The mine operator also had the capacity to inject nitrogen into the longwall gob, which occurred during the monitoring study. The results show that emission rates on the longwall face showed a very limited increase in methane concentrations from headgate to tailgate despite the occurrence of methane delays during monitoring. Average face air velocities were 3.03 m/s (596 fpm) at shield 57 and 2.20 m/s (433 fpm) at shield 165. The time required for the sulfur hexafluoride (SF6 ) peak to occur at each monitoring location has been interpreted as being representative of the movement of the tracer slug. The rate of movement of the slug was much slower in reaching the first monitoring location at shield 57 compared with the other face locations. This lower rate of movement, compared with the main face ventilation, is thought to be the product of a flow path within and behind the shields that is moving in the general direction of the headgate to the tailgate. Barometric pressure variations were pronounced over the course of the study and varied on a diurnal basis.

Recently, the North American mining industry experienced a severe recession, forcing managers to take dramatic steps to cut costs and compete in the difficult international market. Some of these steps were closing mines, reducing work forces, renegotiating wage agreements, and purchasing the most productive equipment. Managers are now looking beyond these traditional avenues and are focusing more on advanced technology. In the present environment, it is essential that mine operators obtain the maximum use of capital expended on equipment. However, mine workers do not obtain maximum efficiency or productivity from equipment because the adverse and hazardous mine environment impedes human performance. Also, the efficient use of large, complex machines calls for levels of precision that many times are beyond the capability of even highly trained miners. A possible solution to this problem is a machine that mines without operators - autonomous mining machines. However, numerous problems confront researchers who are attempting to develop such equipment. Some mining tasks are not always composed of a series of cyclic motions readily performed by factory floor robots. In addition, mining takes place in the geological environment where conditions are highly variable and unpredictable. As a result, these machines must be able to sense and adapt to variations in operating tasks and environment. Considerable autonomous vehicle research has been completed, especially for defense. However, autonomous vehicle (AV) technology has not advanced to practical application yet (King, 1988) and mining research is necessary in areas: representing mining specific knowledge; •analyzing and reasoning about sensor data in the mining environment; and •discovering completely new mining methods or new approaches to existing methods that become apparent when we remove the constraints imposed by the necessity of human operators. A specific machine, the LHD, can be used to show the problems for researchers who are attempting to develop autonomous machines for mining. This author chose the LHD because it can borrow concepts developed for autonomous navigation by military programs. But considerable mining research is also required. Furthermore, studies done at the Henderson mine, in Colorado, show autonomous LHD 's promise cost and safety benefits (King, 1988). At Henderson, LHDs load ore from draw points, tram to an ore pass, dump and return, or switch to another draw point. An autonomous LHD must sense vehicle position along the route, relate sensor data to stored-map information, to determine location, follow drift center lines, plan paths between dump position and initiate appropriate control commands, sense vehicle operating status and vehicle health, key on features or targets for special tasks like high speed turns, perform end of travel tasks (loading and dumping), and detect and avoid obstacles. These goals are similar to those for shuttle cars, trucks, and front-end loaders. Therefore, much of the technology is transferable. Each Henderson LHD extracts six to 40 dippers from each of a series of draw points. The LHD transports the ore to an ore pass within 55 m (180 ft) of the draw point, making the longest round trip 110 m (360 ft). The LHDs have very fast hydraulic dumping and loading systems that reduce the round trip cycle to less than one minute. Even though the LHD is capable of 500 trips per shift, the average production is 300 dippers. Man trip and lunch reduce available operating time to 6.5 hours per shift. Mucking difficulties (setting large boulders aside), operator breaks for activities like talking shop, and cleaning and smoothing roads further reduce operating time. Supervised autonomy can reduce the number of operating units by increasing operating time per shift since computer controlled machines can operate during lunch and between shifts and reduce operator errors. If dippers per shift increase from 300 to 350 (long-range goals are 500 dippers per shift), constant production requires only 10 operating LHDs and two spares. Manpower requirements drop from 24 to four by controlling five machines from one workstation. A review of technology available from the Autonomous Land Vehicle, the Advanced Ground Vehicle Technology, the Ground Surveillance Robot, and other programs, show the following differences between others work and mining industry needs: •If we focus initially on mobile haulage vehicles, we can navigate from a map. We do not need to explore. •We can modify the environment to reduce the navigation requirements. •We have a harsher environment than any of the research programs have encountered. •Our equipment must operate faster and more precisely than present AVs. •Our equipment must operate reliably over long periods of time. •We must have better onboard machine health monitoring and diagnostics. •The AV programs do not address geosensing. •The major AV programs are not cost-effective. For example, we cannot afford the computer power for robust image processing, yet. To computer control an LHD, we must replace the guidance and monitoring skills of experienced operators with sensors, computing hardware, interfaces, and several software mod¬ules. One of the major ignition sources of fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines is flame cutting and welding. On May 20, 2006, a flame-cutting operation at the Darby Mine No. 1 led to an explosion that resulted in five fatalities. On Jan. 22, 2003, another explosion caused by flame cutting at the McElroy Mine resulted in three fatalities and three serious injuries. On June 22, 1999, a flame-cutting and welding operation at the Loveridge Mine caused a fire that required sealing the mine for an extended period. On March 19, 1992, an explosion initiated by welding at the Blacksville No. 1 Mine resulted in four fatalities. These examples of mine incidents demonstrate the need to conduct research to develop best practices for safely conducting flame cutting and welding in underground coal mines. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study on fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines that were caused by flame-cutting and welding operations to determine the root causes of these types of incidents. The methodology included interviewing mining personnel who perform flame-cutting or welding operations in underground U.S. coal mines and visiting mines to observe these operations. In addition, MSHA reports of investigations and accidents statistics were analyzed. The findings were used to identify and compare differences between flame-cutting and welding practices and techniques in small and large mines, eastern and western mines, low-seam and high-seam mines, room-and-pillar and longwall mines, and between experienced miners and new miners. As a result of this study, best practices were developed to reduce the number of ?res and explosions caused by flame cutting and welding. This paper provides a summary of this research.

For sulfide minerals, the presence of dissolved oxygen in the water phase is an influencing factor for separation by flotation. Klassen and Mokrousov(I:217l distinguish three stages of oxygen adsorption; namely, reversible adsorption, activated adsorption and, finally, surface oxidation. While contraversial, limited adsorption of oxygen is believed to improve the interfacial reactivity between collector and mineral. Intensive surface oxidation of sulfide minerals usually results in unsatisfactory flotation with collectors of the xanthate type. The influence of dissolved oxygen in the water phase has received consideration for sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcocite, and covellite(2,3,4,5,6). However, the nature of surface oxidation products of sulfide minerals has received very limited investigation(6,7). Lightly oxidized galena promotes the adsorptive reaction of surfactant (xanthate or dixanthogen). Tolun and Kitchener(8) state that limited interaction occurs between galena and xanthate under relatively reducing conditions. And, that exposure to oxygen raises the electrochemical potential of the galena to that required for reaction with xanthate or dixanthogen. In the latter condition, the galena has an "effective flotation surface". On the other hand, intensive oxidation of galena reduces the chemical reaction with xanthate collectors (9) . Complete flotation with xanthate-type surfactants with increasing oxygen content in the water phase has been determined to have the following sulfide mineral sequence(3): galena, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and arseno-pyrite. The work of Cusack(4) suggests that some threshold amount of oxygen is necessary for flotation to occur, but heavy oxidation hinders flotation with xanthates. According to Tolun and Kitchener(8) catalytic oxidation of xanthate to dixanthogen occurs. Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System (LoSCoMS) is a software and data communication system developed at the University of Alabama. This system integrates real-time shield monitoring, data presentation, analysis and forecasting of forthcoming events. The main objective of this system is to provide stability information on longwall panels including excessive shield load, low setting pressure, leg leakage and poor shield performance, eminent maintenance problems, etc. Analyses of various mining and geological parameters were also performed to determine past and present roof characteristics and to forecast roof loading patterns for the following mining cycles, next periodic weighting, etc. A local coal mine in the Warrior Coal Basin has adopted this system to provide daily evaluation of ground stability and maintenance problems of their longwall panels. Two years of experience with this system is covered in this paper.

The White Pine Mine is situated in Ontonagon County, approximately six miles south of Lake Superior, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (Figs. 1 and 2). The ore body mined by White Pine Copper Company occurs in the lower - most 20 to 25 feet of the Nonesuch formation, a series of middle - to upper Keweenawan shales, siltstones, and sandstones. This paper elaborates on the solution of problems in ore grade control and mine planning arising from the presence of an essentially barren sandstone stratum within the ore body.

This paper discusses the replacement of AEROFLOAT ® 1 25 promoter by AERO ® 5688 promoter at Sonora Mining Corp.'s California Mother Lode concentrator. Flotation concentrate is trucked 120 miles to a leach plant in Nevada, so the reduced mass resulting from higher gold grades and reduced talceous gangue and barren pyrite resulting from this change in promoters has brought about a major decrease in shipping costs. Preliminary laboratory testing indicated that free milling gold and controlled amounts of pyrite could be floated using Aero 5688 promoter with reduced dosages of Aero 350 xanthate.2 Extensive plant trials confirmed that the new reagent suite could indeed maintain gold recoveries while reducing total mass. Improved froth characteristics also improved operating flexibility in treating various ore types, and overall reagent costs have been reduced.

In this study, a unique excavation system was characterized, utilizing waterjet technology as the primary tool for material removal during rehabilitation of reinforced concrete and shotcrete structural liners. Through empiric testing, this research seeks to validate the hypothesis that waterjet removal of these support systems will result in less unintended damage than conventional removal methods. The intent is to develop a viable technology that will reduce the collateral damage caused to surrounding liners during excavation, improve the adhesion between shotcrete and the substrate for longer lasting ground support, and improve overall safety for workers in underground environments. An analysis on the fracture mechanisms and operating parameters of each method was completed. Instrumented shotcrete panels were physically tested and examined through visual inspection and ground penetrating radar (GPR) to compare substrate damage according to each testing method. After testing was completed, the data strongly indicates that waterjet cutting causes less collateral damage to the surrounding intact liner and substrate when compared to that of conventional impact hammers. This research is intended to provide a scientific basis for additional applied research in the rapid excavation and repair of shotcrete support systems.

The interactions of mineralogy, chemistry and mechanics in an ore concentrator are highly complex, so it can be particularly hard to measure the impact of a specific plant change. This paper describes a method for modeling a baseline metal recovery so that the value of a major process improvement can be measured. This method only considers variables that cannot be optimized, such as mineralogy or equipment availability. Linear regression, random forests, extreme gradient boosting (XGB), and simple two-layer neural network models of process value were tested as candidate baseline model types to assess the impact on throughput and recovery in a copper concentrator. XGB performed the best in terms of accuracy for both throughput and recovery models. Using an XGB model of nonoptimizable process variables provides an accurate, dynamic baseline that can be compared with continuous production data to determine the value added by major concentrator improvements in real time.

"Plant design parameters for gold extraction, leach residence time and cyanide consumption are generally determined from standard bench-scale bottle roll or agitation leach tests. The application of laboratory data to process design has essentially evolved from the testing of oxide or low cyanide-consuming ores. Such scale-up factors may not be appropriate for ores that deplete cyanide and oxygen since this interferes with gold extraction kinetics. High cyanide-consuming ores also exacerbate the differences between the conditions applicable to small batch tests and large continuous operations. Testing a reactive high-sulfide South American ore deposit necessitated the re-evaluation of conventional bench-scale cyanidation procedures. Pulp density can be a major factor affecting the results for plant design purposes and should be treated as a test work variable. As with high clay-bearing ore, where pulp viscosity can hinder mass transfer, minimizing the influence of test equipment on gold extraction kinetics may require low pulp densities. This introduces interpretative complexity since cyanide consumption changes as a function of pulp density. Activated carbon also consumes cyanide, so its effect has to be accounted for in the case of carbon-in-leach (CIL) or carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant flowsheets. Since cyanide is an expensive reagent, often a major component of plant operating costs, it is important that the scale-up of cyanide consumption from laboratory to plant be representative. The traditional method of reporting cyanide consumption in bench-scale testing is questioned since it takes credit for residual free cyanide in leach tails. The projected plant consumption may be better estimated by using the total cyanide addition in a laboratory test. We propose a test work protocol that categorizes the cyanide consumption into its components but requires more extensive testing to generate design data. The ultimate validation of scale-up factors used by project engineers requires rigorous bench-scale versus commercial plant comparative data. Such data are not readily available.IntroductionMajor factors in the design of a gold processing plant are gold recovery, leach residence time and cyanide consumption. These parameters are important determinants of project revenue and costs and, thereby, potentially of project financial viability. Estimates of the associated design criteria for a commercial plant are normally generated from laboratory cyanidation, carbon-in-leach (CIL) or carbon-in-pulp (CIP) tests using standard procedures (Angove, 2005). The key question is whether the standard laboratory test work procedures developed historically for low reagent consuming ores are appropriate for ores that are highcyanide and oxygen consumers.The present paper examines test procedural factors that can influence the test work results and, therefore, their interpretation for design scale-up purposes. The study refers in particular to a high cyanide-consuming sulfide ore. The ore was being tested to develop scoping level engineering design criteria for a proposed project in South America."

Crucial information about safety, design, and operation can be utilized in underground mines from ground movement data. Communicating the information and exploring new findings can be a challenge in a decade where there is an ever-increasing volume and velocity of data due to advancements in mining technologies. This challenge escalates for geotechnical data as it is multidimensional, depending on the space and the rate it takes place. To tackle this challenge, geotechnical engineers should focus on utilizing simple yet compelling visualization of rock mass data in 3D. Competent visualizations of ground conditions as a Trigger Action and Response Plan (TARP) could ease the communication of safety concerns and the exploration of rock mass displacement and strain surrounding an opening at an underground mine. Therefore, this study focuses on using scientific visualization methods by rendering geotechnical data over the surface of a 3D mesh model to display TARP levels. The study is conducted at the San Xavier (SX) Underground Mine Laboratory’s East decline. The project aims to produce visualizations that optimize the use of geotechnical data in near-real-time.

Deposits of ferromanganese crust containing cobalt and nickel occur on the seafloor in the Pacific Ocean near the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll. This paper describes developmental flotation metallurgy to separate crust from its associated substrate gangue. Important variables in ferromanganese crust flotation include reagent type, aeration rate, conditioning time and agitation intensity, pH, temperature, water type, and feed size distribution. Flotation in seawater of minus 600 ~m (-28 mesh) material assaying 6.2% Mn, 0.2% Co, and 0.13% Ni with diesel fuel-crude tall oil-sulfonate collectors produces concentrates assaying 15% Mn, 0.6% Co, and 0.3% Ni with recoveries of 89-95% while removing 62% of the feed weight.

Most coal being used in the United States has been subjected to one or' more processes of coal preparation. The physical and chemical characteristics of a coal have a marked influence on the ultimate uses that coal may have. The selection of the proper preparation processes may similarly be important in producing the best practical coal product for any particular use. The physical composition and distribution of physical constituents in the coal will partially determine the efficiency of the preparation process chosen and conversely distribution and concentration of coal macerals will, to a degree, be controlled by the preparation process. A number of preparation processes have been evaluated to determine this interrelation. If a coal having' certain specifications is desired, these evaluations trill assist in providing information needed for the production of this coal.

The Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group (GMSG) is building an international, multi-stakeholder community to advance the availability and use of standards and industry guidelines for the global mining community. Standards and guidelines are key strategic tools for operational excellence, enabling companies to move forward with efficient, innovative operations with reduced risk. Launched in May 2012, the GMSG is the first international center to bring together information, resources and collaborative projects for mining standards and guidelines, in an open, knowledge-sharing forum. The GMSG is supported by five partner organizations providing outreach and helping to guide GMSG activities: the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME), the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) and the Surface Mining Association for Research and Technology (SMART). GMSG was formed under the CIM Surface Mining Society, though its mandate extends to include underground mining as well. ?SME is supporting the GMSG as a key international activity to advance the implementation of standards and guidelines in our industry, and to provide a forum for our members to access, and contribute to, projects and information to assist their operations,? said SME Executive Director David Kanagy. ?We see the GMSG as a good example of ways the major mining associations can work together for the benefit of all our members.? The GMSG charter encompasses all standards and guidelines that apply to mining; however, a number of subject areas are now being spearheaded by six working groups, namely: ? Access and usage of data from mobile mining equipment onboard systems. ? Operational safety. ? Situational awareness (namely, a unified equipment operator interface). ? Underground operations. ? Asset management and operations data definitions and KPIs. ? Energy in communition.

"It is not surprising that the most popular key takeaway from the Developing Diversity in Mining workshop (see box) held on the first day of the SME Arizona Conference in December was, “Have more parties!”The adage that mining professionals work hard and play hard was clearly demonstrated at the two-day conference in the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa in Tucson, AZ. Nearly 550 participants, some of whom had left behind frigid temperatures and thick parkas in their hometowns, attended a full slate of technical sessions, shared industry experiences and knowledge, reconnected with buddies in the industry, and made strategic new contacts in the conference’s collegial environment, aided by the mild Arizona winter.To start off the technical sessions, John Mansanti, president and chief executive officer of Crystal Peak Minerals and 2017 SME president, entertained a packed lecture room with his keynote lecture on “Tariffs, Embargos, and Cartels ...
