When reading different studies discussing trends in coal mining, it appears that a substantial expansion of output by the year 2000 is predicted, even in the most pessimistic forecasts. Depletion of shallow, easy-to-mine deposits is only a matter of time, and the future average mining depth will increase. The proportion of slope to shaft mines operated during the next decades will change in favor of the shaft mines. Since an increasing amount of shafts in new nine developments seems to be inevitable, it appears appropriate to focus more attention on shaft design criteria. Some valuable papers have recently been published (1) that emphasize geotechnical aspects of shaft design. In the discussion that follows some other aspects of design criteria will be evaluated.

This paper summarizes and evaluates data on mine subsidence ground movements and associated damage for houses in Illinois. Based on the data collected, the response of homes to subsidence ground movements is expressed in terms of repair costs. A damage criteria is then proposed that relates the ground movements and damage levels. The data were collected as part of a comprehen¬sive study performed for the Illinois Abandoned ?Lined Lands Reclamation Council, A -M-RC, by the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Illinois, and probably will be published in late 1934 by the council. The study concentrated its efforts on surface ground movements and the effects to houses over abandoned room and pillar mines. The resultant surface subsidences are commonly dish or bowl shaped and are termed sags. Method of Analysis The steps in analysis used to arrive at the proposed damage criteria are: 1. Canvas and rap subsidence damage in houses, 2. Assess the associated ground movements, 3. Estimate the damage repair cost, 4. Develop a damage/repair level classifica¬tion, 5. Correlate the associated ground movement, damage/repair level and home construction type, 6. Propose a damage criteria.

The function of the mine surveyor is to (a) provide a network of points of accurately known position, covering the entire mine property, (b) obtain the required data for the preparation of useful maps and sections! (c) provide position and directional control for the guidance of the operations, (d) measure the progress of the work, (e) measure the movement of rock masses, and (f) make miscellaneous surveys as needed. Mining properties range from the very small to the extremely large, and from those which involve only surface operations to those involving extensive underground workings. Active mines undergo constant change, necessitating continual updating of the surveys. The differences in the character of the deposits, the scale of mining and the mining methods result in large differences in the surveyor's activities and techniques, but many of the problems involved are common to most mines. The surface work of the mine surveyor is very similar to that, of the plane surveyor in that control points are established by triangulation, trilateration and traversing. Detail is taken by direct measurement, by stadia and by aerial photography. The equipment used, the techniques and the methods of processing the resulting data are likewise very similar. However, the underground work is quite different : A. The lines of sight frequently must be carried through constricted openings, often involving short lines of sight and awkward setups. B. The lighting often is poor, requiring illumination of the backsights and foresights, and the crosshairs. C. The ambient conditions often are difficult, involving falling water, high tem- peratures, poor visibi 'kv and heavy traffic through the area being suneyed. D. The surrounding rock map be unstable, resulting in movement or loss of the surveying stations, as well as hazard to the surveyors. E. The points to be measured often are difficult or impossible to reach. F. Steep vertical sights often are necessary, requiring the use of special equipment. G. Many working levels commonly are involved, requiring the transfer of position and orientation to each with a high level of precision. This section therefore will concentrate on surveying problems peculiar to the mine surveyor, chiefly underground work. 22.1-THE MINE COORDINATE SYSTEM A system of coordinates is essential for all permanent mining operations It is very desirable that all mining operations in a ,given area b~ tied into the same system, as this minimizes problems of boundaries and connections Whenever possible this system should be tied into and made part of the state or regional grid system. It is desirable to orient the coordinate grid on a true-north line and to position the origin of the coordinates so that all of the work will be in the "northeast" quadrant, making the north and east coordinates always positive. This can be done by subtracting suitable constant values from the north and east coordinates of the regional system The residual values are of more convenient magnitude and can be used as the local mine coordinates. As openpit mines continue to grow deeper and productivity continues to increase, the management of respirable dust and noxious gases can become a challenge. The natural wind flow in openpit mines is often recirculatory. This recirculation traps dust and gases in deep openpit mines. This problem is particularly acute in high-latitude openpit mines, due to a phenomenon known as atmospheric inversion. In the winter, arctic and subarctic regions experience short days and long nights. This deficit of solar radiation creates a situation in which cold, still air accumulates near the bottom of the pit. In openpit mines, this can result in unhealthy accumulations of gases and other contaminants. In this study, the natural wind flow patterns in and around openpit mines were investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CfD) program. Two-dimensional models were created for a variety of pit geometries. The effect of depth, slope angle and wind speed on the recirculation pattern in the pit was examined.

"Mining companies want to be in a position to move quickly and seize a favorable market or to keep their key staff productively busy. One of the problems for these companies is the time required to compensate for unavoidable impacts that the mine will have on the natural environment and to gain environmental permits. All too often, circumstances that were favorable when the project was proposed have become less favorable by the time all the hurdles have been cleared.Accordingly, many mining companies are interested in ways they can inject more predictability into their timelines for gaining environmental permits, shorten those timelines, and be more certain of getting the permits they need to carry out their next project.One increasingly popular way to do this is through a relatively new kind of service — the mitigation bank.Mitigation banks purchase property or easements through property that has been impacted by agricultural, industrial or resource activity. They then turn it around from an environmental point of view. This might include restoring streams and wetlands so that fish and aquatic organisms can survive, and animals have habitat and food to flourish.Appropriate native species of plants including trees and shrubs are planted, and steps may be taken to introduce wildlife to the new habitat. In some cases, a special focus is placed on creating habitat for rare and endangered species of plants or animals.The property is inspected by regulatory authorities, coordinated through an interagency review team (IRT). If the property is determined to be effective as natural habitat, the mitigation bank is then issued credits that it can then sell to development projects that are creating an unavoidable permitted environmental impact elsewhere. A mining company, for example, would buy credits to offset the aquatic impacts due to construction of a mine, access roads and other infrastructure — as required by the Section 404 Clean Water Act permit that governs those unavoidable aquatic impacts. The mitigation bank used for offset must have an IRT-approved service area that includes the location of the impacts."

The adhesion of Leptospirillum ferrooxidans bacterial cells onto the sulfide minerals pyrite and chalcopyrite was evaluated using two different physical-chemical approaches; thermodynamic and extended DLVO theory. For the parameters incorporated into calculations, the zeta potentials and contact angles of powdered solids and bacterial cells were acquired experimentally. The Hamaker constants essential for Lifshitz-van der Waals inter-action calculations were calculated following two different methods: macroscopic and microscopic. Adsorption tests were carried out at physiologic conditions to estimate the amount of cells adsorbed onto a mineral surface and the extent of alteration of that mineral surface in biobeneficiation. The free energy of adhesion was found to be negative for both minerals, indicating that the adhesion is energetically favored and preferred. The interaction energy diagrams of the total interacting force was also negative for the cases where the particles were charged oppositely; in the remaining cases, the total force was attractive after overcoming an energetic barrier caused by the repulsive electrostatic forces. Under the conditions of the adsorption test, the experimental results are in agreement with the theoretical; this suggests that the physical-chemical forces are crucial for bacterial adhesion.

Any effectuation of a viable program of air pollution control will' require a basic understanding of the chemistry of atmospheric processes, the fate and migration of SO2, and the ultimate health effects of the sulfur oxides themselves. The migration and ultimate fate of Sop discharged into the atmosphere will be discussed with particular emphasis on the various conflicting views and how these relate to our present emission control regulations. Our present lack of knowledge is a severe detriment, and consideration will be given to those particular areas where future research may best be directed to provide the answers to a number of perplexing questions.

A new high intensity grinding technology has been developed and is now being commercialized by Hicom International of Australia. This has led to the development and manufacture of Hicom 120 grinding mills which are now being sold internationally for a range of mining industry applications. The first commercial process application has been for the diamond sector, where the ability of the mill to remove host kimberlite rock by attritioning, with no damage to the thereby liberated diamonds, is seen to be a most beneficial attribute. There are, however, many other mineral industry applications for this mill.

The grinding mill is probably the most common unit operation in mineral processing. There is, however, much that can still be done in the way of optimization. This paper discusses the results of a well-controlled pilot-scale test in which the performance of a tumbling mill equipped with a conventional rubber lining and lifter bars was compared to a tumbling mill equipped with a smooth rubber lining of the magnetic type. The results indicate that the smooth lining is about 14% more effective with respect to energy consumption. By optimizing the size of the grinding media, the mill capacity can be increased in many grinding operations. In this specific case, grinding with a -20-mm ball charge required 26% less grinding energy than grinding with a -30-mm ball charge. The energy savings can, in most cases, be converted to an increase in capacity. The wear of the grinding media is difficult to assess over a short test period, but the results suggest that the wear is somewhat less when a smooth lining is used. A determination of the wear of the linings was not included in this study, but it is generally accepted that the use of magnetic linings reduces the lining costs dramatically. Computer simulation using the Millsoft code developed by Mishra et al. confirms and explains the increased effectiveness of comminution when a smooth lining and smaller grinding balls are used.

"SUMMARY While the basic elements of risk management, including probability, consequences, risk registers, mitigation measures, etc., are now well understood, the process to include correlation, dependencies and linkage of risks and risk scenarios is less well defined and not well understood. To perform accurate and complete risk analysis and risk management, it is necessary to include correlation, dependencies and linkage between risk events, as well as risks that may occur multiple times. In this way, owners and contractors can more accurately determine risk-based costs, risk impacts and risk mitigation strategies. This paper will outline methods to deal with correlation, dependencies and linkage and will consider risks that may occur multiple times. Practical result comparisons – with or without these elements – will be presented. INTRODUCTION We believe the reader is familiar with basic concepts of risk, risk management and mitigation and the use of probabilistic cost-risk processes versus deterministic ones (Reilly et al. 2015; Sander et al. 2015). The probabilistic approach, compared to the simpler and more common deterministic approach (unit prices times unit costs plus a contingency), offers more useful information with respect to the range of probable cost as well as cost “drivers” and better quantifies the effects of risks, opportunities and variability – which improves understanding, leading to a better potential for profit (or loss) for contractors and added value for owners. In this context, a valid and sufficient quantification of correlation, dependencies and linkage of risk events, plus the impact of risks that may occur multiple times, is essential. Components of Cost Estimates – Base Cost, Risks and Other Uncertainties The components of cost that need to be correctly addressed in an estimate include (Moergeli et al. 2015): •,Base costs – the costs that will result if “all goes according to plan” (Reilly 2004) •,Risk costs – the resulting costs of threat and opportunity events, if they should occur •,Escalation costs – costs resulting from normally expected inflation with variability •,Other uncertain costs – costs that result from other events, normally external to the project team’s control, which may include unanticipated events, politically related changes and “black swan” events (Talib 2007)"

The Silver Peak Range North Wilderness Study Area was deleted from the list of US Bureau of Land Management lands in Nevada to be considered for wilderness designation. This decision was based in part on the US Bureau of Mines mineral investigation of the wilderness study area which found indications of precious- and base-metal-resources. The study area lies between the Silver Peak and Dyer mining districts of west-central Nevada. The Bureau examined 13 mineralized sites, most of which were previously unknown and unclaimed. These sites are along two zones that cross the study area from the Silver Peak mining district to the Dyer mining district. The two zones transect a volcanic center of fractured and altered rocks that contain epithermal veins of quartz and calcite with gold, silver, and base-metals. At the surface, these veins are poorly defined. Exposures of the more than forty veins examined were as thick as 17 ft and as long as 1000 ft. Samples from these veins contained significant amounts of precious- and base-metals-as much as 0.02 oz per ton gold, 2.1 oz per ton silver, 1.0% copper, 2.6% lead and 0.4 % zinc. No vein large enough or of high enough grade to be classified a mineral resource was disclosed by the sample data. However, most do have indications of precious- and base-metal-resources at depth. Subsurface exploration of some of the veins is recommended.

INTRODUCTION The U.S. Department of Energy's Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is being constructed to provide permanent storage of radioactive TRU waste materials emanating from military weapons production. These wastes are contaminated with radioactive elements heavier than uranium, thus the name trans-(or beyond) uranic (Uranium wastes). The WIPP site, which is located 26 miles east of Carlsbad, New Mexico, was chosen thru a selection process after the National Academy of Sciences recommended salt deposits as a promising host strata for the storage of radioactive wastes. Throughout the United States numerous DOE facilities have produced and stored defense-generated TRU wastes. Once WIPP becomes operational in the fall of 1989, all sites may ship directly to this repository. A companion project has developed special shipping containers (TRUPACT) for safe transport of materials to WIPP. The WIPP facility is currently composed of surface buildings, three shafts, and underground storage and experimental rooms and tunnels. Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. (FKCI) has nearly completed the construction of the fourth shaft, an intake shaft, to provide additional ventilation to the underground workings. PLANNED SHAFT EXCAVATION METHOD Full-face raise boring ( upreaming ) was the allowable method selected by Frontier-Kemper Constructors for the excavation of the shaft. After arrival of an oil-field type rotary drill rig in December 1987, a 9 inch diameter pilot hole was drilled from the surface to the mine level, a depth of approximately 2145 feet.

Investigations in the Ortiz Mountains have revealed the relationship of igneous activity and gold mineralization to the Tijeras-Canoncito Fault System (TCFS). The northeast-trending TCFS passes through the southeastern part of the Ortiz Mountains where its principal structure is the asymmetric Ortiz Graben. Several fault blocks, containing up to 305 m (1000 ft ) of Eocene Galisteo Formation, comprise the graben that has up to 1220 and 610 m (4000 and 2000 ft) of stratigraphic separation on its southeast and northwest sides, respectively. Intrusions in the Ortiz Mountains can be subdivided into two petrochemical types: an older calcalkaline suite and a younger alkaline suite. The calc-alkaline rocks are characterized by extensive sill, dike, and laccolithic bodies of latite-andesite intrusives and at least one younger (?) granodiorite stock at Candelaria Mountain. The alkaline rocks consist of a large nepheline-bearing augite-monzonite stock, a latite-porphyry hypabyssal plug, the Ortiz diatreme (vent breccia), and trachytic-latite dikes radial to the diatreme. K-Ar age determinations suggest the older suite to be 34 +/-2.2 million years while the younger alkaline rocks range from about 30 to 26 million years. Gold mineralization in the Ortiz Mountains occurs in five distinct environments: brecciapipes, skarns, veins, porphyry-like stockworks, and placers. Lode mineralization is associated with the alkaline suite of intrusive rocks postdating the Ortiz diatreme and predating most of the trachytic-latite radial dikes.

The Robinson copper ores were mined for many years from pits containing varying ore grades, sulfide and oxide ore types, and differing mineralogy. The ores also contain gold and molybdenum values, and their recoveries are an integral part of the flowsheet development. Metallurgical responses were characterized using a standard flotation procedure. Further studies investigated primary and regrind particle sizes, reagents, and other variables. The metallurgical testing was supported by mineralogical studies. Results demonstrated a high degree of metallurgical success for flotation. Final copper concentrates ranged in grade from approximately 28 to 30% copper and copper recoveries were 89 to 95% based on laboratory and pilot plant data.

INTRODUCTION "On many projects, the tendency is to drop interest and support of the geological service as soon as it seems safe. That . . . is a short-sighted policy . . . It would be of further service perhaps to learn whether predictions were reasonably true to life." --C.P. Berkey, 1938 (3) This paper quantitatively compares predicted and encountered shear zone size and location and rock type for tunnels in the Colorado Mineral Belt. The Colarado Mineral Belt is composed of igneous formations with associated metamorphic rocks and faulting. As such, it represents the most complex of provinces for at-grade predictions (27). Shear zone and rock type data are assumed to be statistically homogeneous because of the common geology of the seven tunnels. It is often felt by geologists and engineers that the amount of information from which a geological model is created is so low that any statistical inferences are unstable. In other words, the addition of new data may drastically alter the means and variances suggested by the model. Therefore, predictions are rarely couched in quantitative statistical terms but modified with "probably," "most likely" or "possibly." Comparison of predicted and encountered data from past geological models will permit the "probably's" to be quantified and distilled from the art of geological prediction. To date, two other studies of the validity of predictions have been made (26 and 16). Together, these two studies indicate that

Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been used for the construction of various tunnels for mining projects for the purpose of access, conveyance of ore and waste, drainage, exploration, water supply and water diversion. Several mining projects have seen the successful and economic beneficial use of TBMs, and there is an increasing awareness of the benefits of TBMs for mining projects. Key technical considerations for the use of TBMs for the construction of tunnels for mining projects include geological issues (rock type, rock alteration, rock strength, rock abrasivity, durability, ground water in flows), depth of cover and the potential for overstressing/rockbursts, site access and terrain, portal locations, TBM constraints, minimum tunnel size, tunnel support requirements, contractor and labor experience, and project schedule demands. TBMs offer key project schedule benefits with high rates of progress, which is a unique economic advantage recognized for mining projects where timing is of the essence in order to advance mining development and achieve early startup for operations. A thorough evaluation of the anticipated ground conditions should be performed as part of the decision to adopt a TBM for a mining project. Minimum specifications for TBMs are necessary in order to prevent the incorrect type of TBM from being used. Appropriate geotechnical investigations are necessary in order to provide key information on the anticipated subsurface conditions for careful planning and design of the proposed tunnel alignment. The overall site and geological conditions associated with some projects may suggest that it is not appropriate to use TBMs for some mining projects due to a perceived higher risk. "Several copper projects exclusively utilizing in-situ recovery methods are currently under development in Arizona. Favorable conditions for In-Situ Copper Recovery (ISCR) include a saturated orebody, fracture hosted mineralization, hydraulic conductivity sufficient to effectively inject and recover solutions using wells, and a relatively flat background hydraulic gradient. Safe operation of an ISCR project requires that the operator have the ability to induce and maintain localized hydraulic gradients, thereby controlling the movement of injected and recovered solutions. Benefits of ISCR include reduced initial capital, and a greatly reduced environmental footprint. THE ISCR METHOD EXPLAINED The method chosen to extract a mineral from a deposit is driven by characteristics such as its size, grade and depth of burial. Large lower grade deposits that require significant excavation to access using surface methods are potential candidates for in-situ recovery. ISCR may also be ideal for smaller deposits due to the lower initial capital. However, regardless of the size of the deposit, certain hydrogeologic conditions must be present for ISCR to be successful. In-situ recovery methods do not require excavations of rock from the surface or underground, resulting in a dramatic reduction in surface disturbance when compared to conventional mining. With the ISCR method, what is visible above ground is the processing plant, well heads, piping, process solution impoundments and evaporation ponds. There are no waste rock piles, tailings impoundments, leach pads, or impacts associated with blasting and hauling. Other benefits include reduced initial capital, reduced dust and noise, and lower water use. Early testing of the in-situ copper recovery method by Occidental on the Van Dyke deposit east of Phoenix and by Kennecott at Safford Arizona in the 1970s produced encouraging results, but the permitting regime for a large-scale operation was not yet in place. Additional testing and commercial application of in-situ copper recovery techniques have expanded since the 1980s, most commonly in conjunction with open pit or underground mining operations. For example, several operations in Arizona (San Manuel, Miami East and Tohono) have used in-situ techniques to extract additional copper following conventional mining from parts of the deposits adjacent to open pits or underground workings. Where the rock has been broken up by conventional methods, the method is called “in-place” leaching. The US government has also been involved in assessing in-situ techniques. For example, joint research was conducted by the US Bureau of Mines and industry on the Santa Cruz deposit in Arizona; and both federal and state agencies have been involved to establish the comprehensive permitting regime that exists today. Currently there are several projects in Arizona being evaluated as stand-alone ISCR operations."

The stability of shale gas wells drilled through current and future coal reserves can be compromised by ground deformations due to nearby longwall mining. Depending on the longwall-induced rockmass permeability, the high-pressure explosive gas from the damaged well may reach mine workings and overwhelm the mine ventilation systems. This study uses geomechanical models to estimate the rockmass permeability induced by mining. A two-panel longwall model of a deep, 341-m-cover mining site in southwestern Pennsylvania is constructed in 3DEC to explicitly model the rockmass by a discrete fracture network (DFN) technique. Stress-induced fracture apertures and permeabilities are calculated across the model and are validated against permeability measurements. A fracture flow code (FFC) is developed to use these results to predict potential inflow to the mine should a gas well breach occur. One hundred DFN realizations are simulated, and the results show that for a gas pressure of 2.4 MPa, the average of the predicted inflow rates to this deep-cover mine is 0.006 m3/ s, significantly lower than the average inflow of 0.22 m3/ s for a shallow-cover mine (145-m deep) studied in the previous work (Khademian, et al. 2021). The result can help assess the potential hazards of a shale gas well breach for mine safety and evaluate the ventilation requirements to mitigate the risk.

Water is one of the most important ressources of our planet. Unlike many other natural resources, water cannot be substituted by anything and must therefore be handled with the utmost care. Depending on the region and the possible shortage of water, the importance of water increases even further. Water consumption is not the only factor. In the construction industry, water pollution from auxiliary and operating materials and processes as well as other contaminants and their resulting load on wastewater play an important role. The sources for wastewater on tunneling construction sites are various: Washing water, seepage water accumulating in construction pits, tunnel water, water used in the slurry circuit in fluid-assisted tunneling methods or water from concrete work and stone cutting all these waters are contaminated with a range of pollutants like solids, hydrocarbons, heavy metals, etc. These contaminants can be removed or treated/reduced with the help of specifically designed wastewater treatment plants (WTPs). After the treatment the cleaned water can be either, in best case, reused on the construction site itself or discharged into water utilities like the available sewer or river pin respecting their discharge requirements. Due to dwindling water resources globally, the continuously rising discharge limits and the ever more important aspect of sustainability the use of WTPs on tunneling construction site will be indispensable. In this paper, it will be presented how these systems are designed and work, what advantages they offer environmentally as well as financially and what to look out for when planning and implementing such a system onto jobsite.
