The kinetics of the dissolution of galena was studied by monitoring the mixed potential of a galena electrode in ferric sulfate solutions. The results show that the mixed potential of the galena electrode fluctuated with time in a regular pattern in a 0.1 mol/L Fe2(SO4)3 solution of pH 1.66 and in a 0.01 mol/L Fe2(SO4)3 solution of pH 2.33 at 35°C. The periodic accumulation and precipitation of lead ions at the galena electrode surface and the cyclical variation in pH at the galena electrode surface caused the oscillation phenomena.

The presence of hydrogen sulphide in sewerage systems leads to severe concrete corrosion. Acid causes breakdown of the concrete matrix, and attacks reinforcement. Older sewer systems under acid attack are often found to be acutely corroded, sometimes after short operational periods. Consequently secondary liners are now almost always used. Polymer concrete is extremely acid resistant and if used in segmental linings can forgo the need for a secondary lining. Combined with fibers and/or GFRP rebar Polymer Concrete can produce a very strong acid resistant lining, saving considerable time in the installation of additional liners. This paper explains the problems and advantages of using Polymer concrete in segmentaly lined wastewater tunnels, addressing areas of design, cost, and programming.

"This presentation aims to serve as a primer on conservation, research and regulatory organizations interested in the environmental impact of deep-sea mining. It will also consider a recent, early-stage proposal for an experimental SMS mining operation aimed at increasing our understanding of mining impacts and ecosystem recovery.Over the past 5 years, as deep-sea mining has been moving closer to reality, it has attracted growing attention from deep-sea biologists, conservation groups and operators of deep-sea research vehicles and observing systems. Several new international research organizations have emerged that have a direct interest in deep-sea biodiversity conservation, and the environmental impact of ocean mining. These include INDEEP, which evolved from the 10-year Census of Marine Life program, the Deep Ocean Stewardship Initiative that has recently hosted several high profile international meetings, and the VentBase forum of academics, industry and regulators that aims to develop environmental best practices and informational documents for all stakeholders involved in Seafloor Massive Sulphide (SMS) mining. InterRidge, currently hosted by China, represents a decades old partnership of deep-sea biologists and economic geologists who discovered the more than 100 known hydrothermal vent fields and SMS deposits on midocean ridges and in other settings of seafloor volcanism. In 2012 InterRidge formed an industry liaison group to examine how the mid-ocean ridge researcher community could contribute to the development of environmentally responsible practices for the exploration and exploitation of SMS deposits. While initial meetings with industry were promising, InterRidge members are currently debating the relative merits of sharing exploration know-how and understanding of vent ecosystems with industry, against the need to maintain their independence as stewards of deep-sea ecosystems."

The effects of microwave treatment on the floatabilities and magnetic susceptibilities of some sulfide minerals, namely, pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite, were studied. Pure mineral samples were prepared in -425+212-µm, -212+106-µm and -106+38-µm size fractions. Microflotation and magnetic separation tests were carried out on the samples after microwave treatment at 600, 950 and 1,300 Watts for 5, 20, 60, 90, 120 and 240 seconds. The maximum temperature values of the samples were measured during the microwave treatment, and possible altera-tions on the mineral surfaces were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The effects of microwave treatment are discussed based on the result of microflotation and magnetic separation tests. The results revealed that pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena were heated very quickly and that their surface temperatures reached ~700° to 900°C, while the temperature of sphalerite reached only ~130°C. The floatability of pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena were decreased when microwave energy and the duration of treatment were increased, owing to oxidation of the mineral surfaces caused by relatively high temperature. As expected, there was no change in the floatability of sphalerite. The magnetic properties of pyrite and chalcopyrite were improved by the increase in microwave energy and the duration of treatment to such an extent that 90% of the feed separated as magnetic product. But no change was observed in the magnetic properties of galena and sphalerite.

Global warming is a political reality in the United States today. The actual impact of the continued utilization of fossil fuels is not known and is open to debate. However, the growing concern about the continued use of these fuels is problematic. There are technologies available to us today that would permit America to meet its future energy demand and not contribute to global warming. The inconvenient reality is that fossil fuels cannot completely be replaced with energy conservation and the use of wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal and nuclear energy. The connection between the greenhouse effect and global climate change was first identified by physicist John Tyndall in the 1860s. To prove the greenhouse hypothesis, Roger Revelle and his research team started measuring carbon dioxide concentrations in the earth?s atmosphere in the early 1960s (Becker, 2007). With the rising concern about global warming, scientists throughout the world have been obtaining surface and air temperature data. Scientists have also been comparing CO2 concentrations found in glaciers throughout the world with theorized annual temperatures. Data for both dates back 1,000 years. Armed with this data, many nations of the world and the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have concluded that climate change is a reality. The use of belt air in underground coal mines has been a continuous discussion since it was first introduced in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act (Coal Act) of 1969. Although the Coal Act prohibits the use of belt air to ventilate active workings, there were two exceptions prior to the 2004 Final Rule. There have been several major studies/rule-proposals by MSHA since 1985 and the most recent of which is the Technical Study Panel (TSP) established by the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act of 2006 to study the use of belt air and related issues. This paper reviews the history of belt air use, its associated controver-sies, and more specifically, the 20 recommendations unanimously approved by the TSP.

Remining of abandoned coal mines in Pennsylvania requires the implementation of pollution abatement and mining techniques called Best Management Practices (BMPs). Water-quality data from over 100 remining sites with more than 230 abandoned discharges were analyzed with respect to the types of BMPs employed to abate the pollution loadings of acidity, iron, manganese, aluminum and sulfate. Discharges exhibiting a significant decrease in acidity were most highly associated with sites where large volumes of alkaline materials were encountered (66.7%) or added (63.7%). The best results for iron loading were achieved with large-quantity alkaline addition (54.6%) and water handling systems (47.8%). Water handling systems (47.4%), daylighting (40.7%), and revegetation (40.2%) were associated with significantly lower manganese loadings. The decreases in acidity and sulfate loads associated with increasing the amount of alkaline material in the backfill indicates that the production of acid mine drainage can be retarded by adding large quantities of alkaline materials.

This paper describes the microbiology basics underlying heap and tank biooxidation of metal sulfide ores and concentrates. The primary organisms are identified and described along with the reactions they catalyze and their growth requirements. Also described is the interaction between ore leaching bacteria and the leaching environment in terms of solution chemistry, temperature, and mineral precipitation. Specific factors and agents that stimulate or inhibit growth and activity of ore bioleaching will be identified. Some of these factors are organism-specific and others are generic for microorganisms that grow under acidic conditions. Current knowledge of the limits of bioleaching in terms of dissolved ions in leach solutions, pH, and temperature will be summarized.

Beginning on June 11, 2007, as many as 36, kindergarten-to-grade-12 (K-12) teachers will participate in a program designed to educate them all about the mining industry. The 39th Annual A Total Concept of the Mining Industry – All About Mining, will be conducted by the Colorado Mining Association Education Foundation, Inc. (CMAEF) and the Office of Special Programs and Continuing Education (SPACE) at the Colorado School of Mines. This flagship program includes four intensive weeks at the Colorado School of Mines. During that time, more than 75 volunteer lecturers will “educate the educators” about mining and its importance to the United States and the world. During the learning process associated with obtaining a basic understanding of mining and all its aspects, the teachers will be hosted by hundreds of other industry professionals at 10 Colorado mining operations. Also visited will be a government earthquake center, a museum of mining and industry, an earth mechanics laboratory, a metallurgical research center, a metallurgical concentrator, an electric power plant and a steel mill. Questions before, during and after visits will be answered by another select group of volunteers who will travel with the teachers to the various sites.

At the same time that computers and robotics move the shop floor toward becoming the unmanned "factory of the future" [1], they increase the need within the overall production enterprise for new types of technicians and engineering professionals [2]. Based on previous works which examined, first, the evolution of the technology of manufacturing toward the flexibly-automated factory of the future and, second, the technical- professionalization of U.S. manufacturing sectors [1,3], this paper looks briefly at the workforce of the U.S. metals industry.

The main objective of batch grinding modeling is the estimation of the product particle size distribution over time or specific energy input to the mill. So far, the developed analytical methods require often complicated calculations which are timeconsuming. Thus, more simple approaches that allow the reliable prediction of the complete product size distribution need to be developed. In the present paper, an approach, based on the population balance model (PBM), that reliably predicts the product size distribution is proposed. In order to enable this, the simplified form of the fundamental batch grinding equation was transformed into the well-known Rosin–Rammler (R-R) distribution, thus allowing the determination of the breakage rate for each grinding period. A time-dependent breakage rate framework was developed where the traditional linear theory of the PBM is considered a partial case. This approach allows the deviations from the linear theory to be categorized and the degree of the acceleration-deceleration of the breakage rate to be predicted. Modeling results were validated by laboratory grinding studies using two homogeneous materials, quartz and marble, and one heterogeneous, a limonitic laterite. The experimental data revealed that grinding exhibits non-first-order behavior and the degree of deviation from the linear theory depends on the tested material. The reliability of the proposed model was validated with the use of the distribution modulus n, the a value of the breakage rate parameter, and the optimum n values that minimize the sum of the differences between the experimental and estimated particle size distributions.

Geologic and technical factors such as coal seam thickness, stripping ratios, roof conditions, partings, faults, and size and geometry of the reserve block greatly impact the availability of Illinois coal for mining. Residential and commercial developments also restrict access to coal reserves in some areas. Despite the collective effects of these factors, large blocks of bituminous coal reserves suitable for efficient, low-cost underground mining remain available in Illinois.

Pulsating high-gradient magnetic separation (PHGMS) of fine hematite from tailings was studied using a pilot PHGMS separator to investigate the possibility of its application in industry. The results of this investigation indicate that PHGMS is effective for recovering fine hematite from the tailings and greatly improved the separation performance compared with the conventional high-gradient magnetic separation at the same conditions. By applying the pilot separator with a 1-mm rod matrix to a tailings containing 28.76% Fe, a concentrate assaying 54.35% Fe with 35.89% recovery was achieved. It was found that the separation performance of the pilot separator closely correlates with the main pulsating parameters, i.e., pulsating stroke and frequency. It was also found that a change in the wire diameter of the rod matrix from 2 to 1 mm causes a weak drop in concentrate grade but results in a considerable rise in recovery. This finding proves that the improved performance achieved by the pilot separator is attributed to the pulsating of slurry and to the use of a 1-mm rod matrix. When the first commercial SLon-2500 PHGMS separator with a 1-mm rod matrix was applied to recover fine hematite from the tailings, the results duplicated those achieved with the pilot PHGMS separator.

Filtration systems with disposable filter elements (DFEs) are used in the underground coal mining industry to control particulate matter emissions from diesel-powered permissible and nonpermissible coal mining equipment. This study was conducted in underground mine conditions to evaluate three types of high-temperature DFEs used in those filtration systems. The DFEs were evaluated for their effects on the concentrations and size distributions of diesel aerosols and concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Those effects were compared with the effects of a standard muffler. The experimental work was conducted directly in an underground environment using a unique diesel laboratory developed in an underground experimental mine. After an initial DFE degreening period, the filtration system with all three DFEs was found to be very effective at reducing total mass concentrations of aerosols in the mine air. The effectiveness of DFEs in filtering aerosol mass was found to be a function of the engine operating conditions. The efficiency of the new DFEs significantly increased with accumulation of operating time and buildup of diesel particulate matter in the porous structure of the filter elements. A single laundering process did not exhibit substantial effects on performance of the DFE elements. The effectiveness of DFEs in removing aerosols by number was strongly influenced by engine operating mode. The concentrations of nucleation mode aerosols in the mine air were found to be substantially higher for both DPFs and DFEs when the engine was operated at high-load modes than at low-load modes. Initial heating of certain DFEs resulted in visible white smoke and substantially elevated aerosol number concentrations. The effects of the DFEs on total nitrogen oxides (NOX) concentrations were found to be minor. The NO2 fraction was found to be generally lower for the DFEs than for the muffler. The engine-out NO2 fraction of the total NOX was found to be substantially higher for low-load modes than for high-load modes.

Water-jet-assisted cutting involves the use of a mechanical cutting bit in combination with a high-pressure water jet directed just in front of the bit tip. Such a jet can offer benefits in terms of improved cutting, reduced dust and fines, and improved bit wear. The Bureau of Mines, through a contract with the British National Coal Board, has researched the use of water-jet-assisted cutting on roadheaders. After several engineering design problems were overcome, this program led to the successful underground testing of these roadheaders. Today, more than 60 water-jet-assisted roadheaders are in operation around the world and numerous others are on order. This paper details the evolution of these machines and the benefits to be gained by their use.

An accurate and reliable prediction of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) performances, in terms of Rate of Penetration (ROP), utilization (U), and cutter wear rate, is a critical element in the successful planning and execution of mechanical tunneling project. Three open hard rock TBM projects were studied to establish possible trends and correlations between rock mass properties and machine performance. Based on this analysis and literature survey, three geological parameters, including RQD, RMR, and groundwater inflow rate, were identified as having the greatest impact on TBM utilization level. Rate of Penetration (ROP) and cutter wear rate were also correlated with fracture spacing, alpha angle, and Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI).

Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and these data change as internal and external conditions evolve. Staffing turnover hinders experienced-based decisions especially with simple tools like spreadsheets. Lack of current information can contribute to decisions that result in significant deterioration in the quality of operation. Timely, unified information from sophisticated analyses presented to the broadest possible reach will improve operation. The major innovation is the addition of the web browser to the suite of software people will use with no training – the other two are spreadsheets and graphical presentations – and the consistent organization and transformation of the real time data to support broad access. This paper describes the data transformations and presentation methods necessary for a Web view, especially the special needs of real time data and analysis required for active operations decision-making. Many people inside and outside the complex, not just operators, need timely information that is abstracted, aggregated, organized and unified. Unification and aggregation of real time data presented via the Web opens a new paradigm for collaboration. The analysis tools are as important as the data. These rule-based tools add significantly to the operations database in the form of results stored for viewing with plant data. Mining and metallurgical plants already use many sophisticated analysis tools such as predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis vibration analysis, and oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. These add real time events, similar to an alarm package, and unified production information to the operational database. Simple models are used on line to create key indices that provide a real time indication of performance. Key indices include metrics for losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency, and overall process equipment effectiveness. These additional data in the operations database are used for early fault detection, increased production, better quality, higher availability of equipment and faster detection of process bottlenecks. An important feature is the ability for people to create their own key indices and store the results for use by anyone in the plant historian, but accessible by a browser. Minerals contribute to U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels ? from mining and processing to the manufacturing of Anished products. In 2009, the estimated real GDP of the United States decreased by 2.4 percent compared with, and the estimated nominal GDP was about $14.2 trillion (Table 1). Trends in various sectors of the domestic economy are often reflected in mineral production and consumption rates. In 2009, the continued decline of the housing market was reflected in reductions in the production and consumption of cement, clays, construction sand and gravel, and crushed stone (those mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction). Production of mineral commodities associated with the manufacture of goods for the housing market, such as ceramic tile, heating and air conditioning equipment, paint, plumbing and sanitaryware, roofing, wiring and wallboard also decreased. INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA's) rapid transit system, Metro, ultimately will comprise 162.5 km (101 miles) of line divided among 10 routes. As shown in Figure 1, about 24 km (15 miles) of the system will consist of mined rock tunnels distributed along the A, B, C and K Routes. The structural construction contracts for all of the A, C and K Route rock tunnels are complete and trains are running in about one-third of them. A contract for construction of rock tunnel section B-9, the southernmost third of the B Route, was awarded on June 27, 1980. The final design of Sections B-10 and B-lla, the remainder of the rock tunnel portions of the B Route and the Metro system, are well advanced and should be under con¬struction by 1982. Of Metro's 87 stations, 11 will have been constructed by mining in solid rock, a not inconsiderable achievement, since each structure must be over 183 m (600 feet) long, wide enough to accommodate two trains and one or two passenger platforms, and high enough to achieve a stable arching action without encumbering columns. With the passage of years, some original priorities have been reordered, and ways have been sought to streamline and simplify this most complex of Metro structures without grossly violating the architectural standards that make it unique. This paper will summarize that search, and describe the design and construction aspects of the resulting product, the dual chamber rock tunnel station.
