Coal desulphurization by flotation is often difficult due to the surface oxidation of coal pyrite. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were adopted to obtain detailed information about the surface oxidation of pyrite. Fresh pyrite surfaces were found to be hydrophilic, and to turn hydrophobic after initial oxidation, with oxidized products such as polysulphide FeSx and free sulphur. The oxidized products on the pyrite surface were reduced by an electrochemical method, returning the surfaces to a hydrophilic state and thus increasing the separating efficiency of coal from pyrite by flotation. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Metallurgical Engineering) degree This work was done to characterize the leaching of a uranium containing pulp processed by a South African producer to identify parameters that could be adjusted to increase the extraction of uranium in the existing circuit. Batch leach tests were used to characterize the leach properties and especially the influence of the oxidant concentration on the leaching achieved. It was found that relatively high extraction could be obtained even at room temperature by using a high liquid-to-solids ratio and that increasing the oxidant concentration significantly improved the leaching of the uranium minerals.

On scheduled commissioning and effective operation of a solvent extraction circuit relies on getting the design of both the core contact equipment and the peripheral plant right. Experience has shown that poor performance of new plants is frequently a result of ?utility? systems that do not match the requirements of the circuit, rather than the mass transfer equipment itself. Both the operator/owner and designer need to understand the ?complete requirements? for the circuit to get the balance of the design right. This paper reviews generic issues, frequently overlooked or altered during cost-cutting exercises, which have a significant impact on plant performance.

The viscosities of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO-FeO slags were measured under conditions ofCaO/SiO2=1.15–1.6, 10–13 percent Al2O3, 5–10 percent MgO and 5–20 percent FeO. Slag viscosity decreased with increasing FeO content at a fixed basicity (CaO/SiO2) of slag. Slag viscosity at low FeO (<7.5 percent FeO) exhibited a minimum value by increasing MgO content in slag. Viscosity decreased with increasing slag basicity up to 1.3 while it increased as slag basicity increased from 1.3 to 1.5. Thus, it was proposed that the driving force for the decreases of slag viscosity would be an increase in depolymerization of silicate network at C/S=1.3, while the viscous behaviour at C/S>1.3 would be increased with increasing the chemical potential of primary solid phase e.g. dicalcium silicate. A thermodynamic approach for the activity of primary solid phase in molten slags resulted in a reasonable relationship between viscosity and slag components. Therefore, it was confirmed that slag viscosity in basic slags system (C/S>1.3) could be determined by the chemical potential of dicalcium silicate. "A study of five commercially available solvent-extraction diluents in combination with three commercially available extractants under sub-Saharan African copper solvent-extraction conditions yielded intriguing results. A variety of physical and chemical property analyses showed that the diluents have some property differences, but overall the properties are similar and provide comparable solvent-extraction performance. Although each physical chemical property technique provides useful information, no individual test result suffices for prediction of diluent performance. Furthermore, a diluent should be evaluated within the conditions for which it is targeted to determine a true measure of performance. Overall, the diluents studied possess appropriate physicochemical properties for sub-Sahara Africa copper solvent-extraction conditions and can be utilized to achieve efficient, safe and reliable operations. INTRODUCTION Background Today, commercial SX diluents are available globally from a limited number of manufacturers. Production quality and consistency of these diluents have improved tremendously over the past 20 years. For example, diluent flash points have been increased incrementally to improve transport and handling while reducing fire hazards. In addition, properties have been successfully modified to minimize evaporative losses, ultimately reducing SX plant raw material costs. Diluent manufacturers have also focused on meeting performance requirements of SX plants, including eliminating components detrimental to SX operations, such as olefinic groups that can react with various species resulting in changing phase-disengagement properties over time, as well as ensuring that proper hydrocarbon components are present within diluent mixtures to maintain good reagent–metal complex solubility. These challenges have been met in the midst of ever-increasing stringent environmental regulations. Sub-Saharan Africa copper SX operations pose a unique set of conditions for diluents due to inherent ore compositions and the associated high reagent concentrations required for complete copper extraction. Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, LP has been manufacturing hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon-based diluents since the mid-80s, applying this experience to identify the physical properties considered crucial for proper performance in SX operations. This paper documents the findings of a study utilizing commercially available diluents in combination with extraction reagents commonly utilized in African SX operations to evaluate the relative performance of the diluents under sub-Saharan Africa copper SX conditions."

Room-and-pillar mining is commonly employed for the extraction of rock salt in undergroundmines. Pillar stress is a major concern in these mines as it is directly related to stability and mineralrecovery. In this study a flat jack method was used to measure pillar stresses in three undergroundrock salt mines in Pakistan. The field work included determination of in-situ stress, in-situ elastic modulus, recording of field variables (pillar length and width, height and width of opening, opening width to height ratio, extraction ratio, and overburden height) and collection of salt block samples. The geomechanical properties of rock salt (uniaxial compressive strength, Young’s modulus, Brazilian tensile strength, and density) were also determined to estimate overburden stress, pillar strength, and factor of safety (both estimated and actual). It was found that the measured pillar stresses are proportional to the overburden stress values, with their magnitude ranging from 6.05 MPa to 11.97 Mpa, and the pillars were found to be stable. Regression analysis was performed to develop statistical models for in-situ stress and in-situ elastic modulus. Finally a quick guideline chart was developed to determine the suitable length of pillar for a given span and required level of safety.

The dissolution of alumina and magnesia has been investigated using laser scanning confocal microscopy (alumina) and a rotating finger apparatus (magnesia) to assess the effects of temperature, composition and forced convection on the rate of dissolution in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3based slags. The two techniques have differing strengths and limitations, and provide complementary methods for studying dissolution. Alumina dissolution was studied for temperatures from 1477 to 1577°C. Based upon the data, the rate controlling mechanism was thought to be mass transfer control in the slag. The diffusion coefficients for the alumina particles are estimated to be in the range 10-11to 10-10m2.s. MgO degradation for sample rotation speeds of 50 to 800 rpm at 1500 and 1530°C was studied for both congruent and incongruent dissolution. The results show that the rate of dissolution for this is primarily controlled by a diffusion mass transfer mechanism for congruent dissolution except at the highest rotation speed. For incongruent dissolution, the mechanism is much more complex, with the morphology and distribution of the spinel reaction product having a significant effect. At high speeds and prolonged times, mechanical forces played a major role in the degradation process. A bubble population balance model is proposed for the prediction of Sauter mean bubble diameters in mechanical flotation cells. In the model, the flotation cell is treated as two separate, statistically homogeneous zones?the impeller zone, and the bulk tank zone. Balance functions for the rates of bubble breakage, coalescence, recirculation and inlet-outlet events are proposed based on classical chemical engineering research in two- and three-phase fluid mixing systems. An initial simulation of the population balance model shows trends in bubble size distributions comparable to measured distributions in industrial mechanical flotation cells.

The South African mining industry continues to be a major source of employment at a time when at least 25 per cent of the working age population is unemployed. At the same time the industry faces a skills shortage in many of the disciplines necessary for its future health. The University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg, and University of South Africa have historically produced mining graduates for the South African mining industry with any shortfall being met by the recruitment of overseas graduates. More recently, the global shortage of engineers and other mining industry professionals has seen a reversal of this trend and a very significant emigration of well-educated and highly skilled personnel. The traditional career path for mining graduates is in production and mine management. However, there is the parallel (and possibly more pressing) need for specialized skills in such fields as ventilation, rock engineering, mine planning, mineral resource evaluation, and mineral asset valuation. Chronic shortages in these essential areas continue to hamper the development of the industry and may well frustrate its ambitions to be safe, healthy, and profitable into the future. The permeability of skills across sectorial boundaries within the mining industry requires that skills shortages in the platinum sector are not looked at in isolation, but within the context of the entire industry. This paper reviews the efforts being made by the universities, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to meet the needs of the South African mining industry in terms of the required numbers and the range of specialized skills.

The paper deals with the technologies required for opening up anew idealized ultra-deep level mine. First the overall philosophy of accessing ore at ultra depths is discussed. Then the individual technologies which will be required are explored. Finally a detailed overview on one of the key technologies, namely tunnel support, is given. Because this project is still in its infancy, few definitive answers are provided; instead each of the envisaged technologies are briefly discussed, with emphasis on those which require the element of speed for rapidly accessing the ore body.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng. (Mining Eng.) Cullinan Diamond Mine currently handles 3.2 million tons of run of ore per annum. This is done by means of an underground train system, which is located at 763 metre level. Four trains, one in each quarter of the pipe, collect ore from passes and transport it to centrally located tips in the north and south of the pipe. The ore is then split into coarse and fine fractions. The coarse fraction proceeds to the primary crushers in the north and south. Historically, mining has been performed in such a manner that an equal amount of ore has reported to each quarter of the pipe. However, the tonnage profile of the mine will change such that the ore will no longer be split equally. For approximately five years the majority of ore will report to the east and thereafter most of the ore will report to the western portion of the mine. This will continue for the remainder of the current infrastructure level?s operational life. Coupled with this is the fact that the mine is aiming to increase its annual production to 3.8 million tons. The result is that the current ground handling system cannot accommodate the additional tons and therefore alternative ground handling options have been investigated. The continued existence of Cullinan Diamond Mine relies on finding a system that can economically handle the additional tonnage. Three options were investigated. Firstly, a train option, which would be an upgrade of the current system, was investigated. Two truck options were also investigated, the first of which was a conventional truck option. The second truck option was more interesting and involved an unfamiliar Combi truck system. The truck options were investigated primarily due to the fact that the block height of the BA West (a new production block) can be increased by 15 meters if a truck option is decided upon. This would create a significant increase in revenue for the BA West project. Each of the options was assessed in terms of its physical and financial feasibility. In terms of the physical constraints, it was found that all three systems could work. Detailed financial analysis indicated that either of the two truck options would be a suitable solution. However, due to the limited information regarding the Combi truck option, it should be further investigated. This applies particularly to the actual running and maintenance costs for the equipment.

For the purpose of determining confidence limits for ore grade estimates, an extensive simulated database was used, which included 1728 ore blocks with ?actual? grades and the corresponding estimates based on ordinary and simple kriging. The practical results show that conditional unbiasedness is essential and that acceptable confidence limits can then be set using Normal theory for the simulated error distribution based on the logarithms of the ratios of ?actuals?/estimates with a variance related to the kriging variance. The mean of the data used to prepare the variogram and the estimated block grade are to be used properly in this approach. A practical analysis was also done of the actual point and block data from a very large mined out Carbon Leader area. The distributions of the actual grades for two levels of block sizes with different levels of variability were fitted using three models, ie. two three and compound lognormal. The trends of tonnages, grades and relative profits for a range of pay limits, as well as the usual tonnage-grade curves, show a practical insensitivity for the choice between the three lognormal models considered.

The lining, together with the electrodes, forms the heart of the operation of a submerged arc furnace. Subsequent to a lining failure on M12 furnace during the early 1980s, Metalloys was active in investigating the concept of thermally efficient ?freeze? linings for its furnaces. The theory revolved around that, not only would, thermally efficient linings result in significant cost savings, but they would also last longer as a result of being subjected to less harsh operational conditions. After having proved the concept on the .smaller. furnaces, Metalloys decided to implement the concept on its largest submerged arc furnace, M12 Subsequent to having recovered from an impending failure of a lining installed in 1981 in M12 in the mid 1980s, Metalloys managed, through rigid lining management, to extend the life of this lining to 1999. At the end of 1999 the decision to replace the lining in the furnace with a ?freeze? lining was made and planning and design proceeded in earnest. This paper discusses the options considered in making the final decision. The features of the design of the lining are also discussed. Consideration is given to the furnace shell cooling system as a result of its importance in maintaining the thermal equilibrium in the lining. Note is made of the fact that the purchase of a .freeze. lining is an expensive exercise but that the time savings in the installation of the lining and the efficiency improvements during operation far outweigh the additional capital cost. The experience on M12 has been that the payback period of the marginal capital expenditure is less than three years. As a result of the opportunity to reline a furnace the size of M12 not presenting itself very often, the learning points from the installation of the lining and the operational advantages and disadvantages are significant. Finally, the point is made that the project had its pros and cons but overall the success of the project has been evident and, as such, the ?freeze? lining is likely to become the norm at Metalloys.

The new South African Mineral Policy has major implications on the way mineral rent will be collected and shared between the stakeholders in future. Although the policy does not supply details on how this will be done, drastic departures from practices under the previous dispensation require a new approach. For example, there introduction of the ?right to mine? principle implies that the repealed lease consideration concept will be expanded to all minerals. The new policy also makes provision for predetermined standard terms and conditions for all prospecting and mining permissions. It also states that, regardless of whether the mineral rights are state or privately-owned, all prospecting fees and mineral royalties will be determined by state officials after consultation with the registered holder of the mineral rights. This paper proposes a standard mineral royalty formula that complies with the principles mentioned in the White Paper and has been shown to be internationally competitive.

"Pyrometallurgical furnaces are tapped through tap-holes that are opened with drills and oxygen lances. The lance is often used on its own or as the last step of opening the tap-hole. Interaction of oxygen with molten material inside the tap-hole can occur, and is a phenomenon that is not well understood. As part of a study that focuses on the effect of lancing on flow inside and around the furnace tap-hole, a cold-model validation was done. The validation study focuses on validating the MULTIPHASEINTERFOAM multiphase flow solver in OpenFOAM® for the problem involved. The sensitivity of the model to different materials properties (viscosity and density in particular) is presented with both cold models and the results from flow simulations in OpenFOAM®. IntroductionMany pyrometallurgical operations are carried out in furnaces where molten material accumulates continuously. Once enough material has accumulated and is ready to be removed from the furnace, material is tapped through one or more tap-holes in the furnace. Tap-holes differ significantly in both geometry and materials of construction, depending on the process involved – examples of different types of tap-hole configurations can be found in, for example, Nelson and Hundermark (2014). Tapholes all share one common feature: they are high, wear areas of the furnace. Molten material at high temperature flows through these areas, after which the tap-hole is sealed, usually using tap-hole clay. The purpose of the tap-hole clay is to harden inside the tap-hole and seal it until the next tap.Once ready to tap, a pneumatic drill and/or oxygen lance is used to open the tap-hole. The extent of lancing a furnace tap-hole depends strongly on the type of furnace. In, for example, many blast furnace operations lancing is limited as much as possible, and done only if drilling was not effective. In other operations, such as on small-scale pilot furnaces with short tap-holes, only lancing is used to open the tap-hole."

Small replacements of C12-trithiocarbonate (C12-TTC) for dithiocarbonate (DTC)/dithiophosphate (DTP) in a reagent suite for the flotation of platinum group metals (PGM) have significantly improved the rejection of gangue. Coupled to this is an improvement in kinetics, grade and recovery of PGMs. In a pilot-plant trial, after a 5 mole per cent replacement of the current DTC/DTP collector combination by C12-TTC, large opaque bubbles were replaced by small clear ones. In addition, a similar flotation response was realized with one-third of the current depressant dosage. During a preliminary plant trial on underground UG2 ore, the initial rougher concentrates were characterized by higher PGM concentrate grades and this was in part due to improved chromiter ejection. The concentrate produced from the TTC trial also exhibited a much finer particle size distribution. The overall circuit performance, which included secondary regrind and flotation, showed an increase in concentrate grade of approximately 44% while the tailings grade remained unchanged

This paper is based on the assumption of some knowledge of the National Water Act. It will consider the question of how that Act fits in with: a) existing laws which overlap on the subject matter b) new laws either in draft or in the process of being compiled c) policies which will eventually find their provisions included in new legislation (e.g. minerals policy) d) international practices. The focus will be specifically on the interaction of legislation relating to water use and water pollution in the mining sector as well as the role of the Department of Water Affairs in mining matters. Hence the title of the presentation.

The DEEPMINE Collaborative Research Programme was established to create the technological and human resources platform that would make it possible to mine gold safely and profitably at depths of 3 to 5 km. The DEEPMINE Programme has four goals: to acquire knowledge of and develop appropriate technology for new ultra-deep level mines, to stimulate education and training, to establish a culture of innovation, and to encourage rapid technology transfer and implementation. The research programme was launched in July1998 and will be completed in March 2002, with the final year focusing on the transfer of knowledge to the industrial partners. DEEPMINE represents a new model for conducting mining research: it is driven by industry needs; emphasizes collaboration between industrial partners, research organizations and tertiary education institutions; and has a novel joint-funding mechanism. DEEPMINE has employed a range of vehicles to transfer knowledge to its industrial partners. Novel aspects include: (a) electronic publication of Summary Reports and Guideline Handbooks that seek to consolidate the huge body of knowledge comprehensively and concisely, (b) a series of DEEPMINE Schools designed to enable industry practitioners to apply the knowledge to their current work situation, and (c) Consultancy Reviews, where DEEPMINE specialists seek to apply knowledge to specific real problems on mines.
