"The decreasing availability of resources amenable to surface operations has led to increasing numbers of underground mines, with trends indicating this will continue into the future. As a result, there is a need for additional optimization processes and techniques for underground mines, with many analogous methods having already been developed for surface mining. Current methods for design and optimization of stope boundary selection and scheduling mainly involve heuristic methods which focus on a single lever. Individual optimality may be approached, but globally optimal results can be obtained only by an integrated, rigorous approach. In this paper we review previous methodologies for stope boundary selection and medium- to long-term scheduling and highlight the need for an integrated approach. Previous integrated approaches are reviewed and an improved modelling system proposed for shorter solution times and greater applicability to mining situations. Randomly generated data-sets for gold-copper mineralization are used to investigate the model performance, describing solution time as a function of data complexity.IntroductionThe increasing need for mineral resources is driving an increase in underground mines. Lower grade mineralization with larger amounts of overburden is becoming economically viable due to technological advances; however, the software and tools available for strategic underground mine planning are not well developed. Advances in the methods used to determine underground layouts and scheduling must occur to ensure underground mining is as optimized as open pit operations, as underground mining involves many more technical restrictions.The process of determining stope boundaries and scheduling is an example of an aspect of underground mining amenable to optimization (Topal and Sens, 2010). The current industry standard for medium- and long-term planning for sublevel stoping (SLS) is to exclusively determine stope outlines and then determine an appropriate sequence and schedule accordingly. This process violates the concept of optimality as integrating the constraints imposed by pre-determining stope outlines does not allow for considerations in scheduling to influence boundary planning (Ataee-Pour, 2005). An integrated planning process that combines both stope outlines and scheduling would approach the optimal solution and hence generate more value for operations. This investigation specifically deals with the underground sublevel stoping (SLS). Other underground mining methods such as block caving, sublevel caving, and room and pillar mining have unique characteristics and therefore require specific stope boundary/production scheduling considerations."

Turbulence in mechanical flotation cells, achieved via an impeller, plays a key role in keeping particles in suspension, dispersing air bubbles, and promoting particle-bubble collision. However, studying the hydrodynamics of a flotation cell is not a simple task, due to the complex nature of flotation systems which are opaque, turbulent, multiphase and polydisperse in terms of particle and bubble sizes. In this paper we study the impact of impeller design modifications on the hydrodynamics of a continuously overflowing bench-scale flotation tank. To this end, two different impeller designs, with and without a stator, were assessed using Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT). This allowed the authors to determine, for the first time, the effect of an impeller design on the behaviour of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic particle tracers. It was experimentally observed that the use of a stator modifies the hydrodynamics within the flotation cell, distorting the lower mixing loop that is characteristic of axial impellers. The role of the stator in dissipating turbulence results in reduced particle velocities outside of the impeller-stator region. These results have important implications for flotation cell design and are discussed in the context of the impact that different designs have on particle movement, flotation hydrodynamics and, ultimately, flotation performance. The fracturing and movement of rock that occurs in the vicinity of a stemmed borehole charge in open pit mining operations are described by examining the effects of the emitted stress waves – shock and elastic – and the expansion of high-pressure detonation product gases. Three principal modes of momentum transfer to fractured rock are identified, all linked to gas expansion work. This work can be delivered radially (burden), axially (stemming), and in the collar zone (cratering). Flyrock is generated under unusual combinations of blast parameters and rock properties. Although infrequent and seldom predictable, the generation of flyrock can nonetheless be interpreted and modelled in terms of the principal mechanisms of rock projection described in this study. The physical processes underlying these principal mechanisms are identified and will permit the development of predictive models for flyrock velocities.

In order to obtain a more suitable separation medium for fine coal, in this paper a pulsed fluidised bed was used to measure the pressure fluctuation, density characteristics, bubble diameter and rising velocity of Geldart A and B particles in the bed by controlling the pulsation frequency and gas velocity, in order to study the fluidisation effect and two-phase distribution of the bed. The results indicated that with the increase of pulsation frequency, the breakthrough point on the fluidisation characteristic curve caused by particle adhesion disappeared, and there was an optimal frequency, which made the minimum fluidisation velocity of particles reach the minimum. In addition, the bubble rising velocity was also simulated. The relationship between them was established using a model, and the error was within 5%. This provides an effective way to predict the bubble velocity, study the distribution of bubble phase, and improve the stability of bed density. Extensions to the beneficiation plant at the Grootegeluk Coal Mine are currently being planned in order to provide power station coal for Escom's Matimba Power Station, presently under construction. A simulation model was developed on the Olivetti M-24 microcomputer to facilitate the development of the envisaged flowsheet. The computer program simulates the heavy-medium separation and screening unit operations. The model is based on the construction of the Tromp partition curve described by an arctangent function, allowing ideal and non-ideal separations. The paper discusses the determination of the parameters required by the arctangent curve from standard process parameters such as Epm, Wolf cut-point, Tromp cutpoint and screening efficiency. The accuracy and shortcomings of the model are discussed, while an overview of the application of the model to evaluate borehole and bulk sample analyses is also given. It is concluded that the model is an invaluable aid to general flowsheet development.

The main purpose of the paper is to determine the contribution of fluctuations in barometric pressure to flammable gas explosions in South African mines. For this purpose, the barometric-pressure patterns preceding each of the 59 major explosions in South African gold and coal mines over the past 20 years were analysed. It is concluded that diurnal fluctuations in pressure do not have a major influence on the accumulation of gas in the underground workings, but that pressure drops associated with cyclonic weather systems moving across the country over a number of days are the major factor contributing to gas explosions in mines. To illustrate some of the points made in the paper, the Hlobane Colliery explosion of September 1983 is used as a case study. In the final section, several general conclusions are drawn and recommendations put forward as to how mines should recognize and react to meteorological phenomena that may lead to an increased probability of gas explosions in underground workings.

Although additive manufacturing is fast gaining traction in the industrial world as a reputable manufacturing technique to complement traditional mechanical machining, it still has problems such as porosity and residual stresses in components that give rise to cracking, distortion, and delamination, which are important issues to resolve in structural load-bearing applications. This research project focused on the characterization of the evolution of residual stresses in Ti-6Al-4V extra-low interstitial (ELI) additive-manufactured test samples. Four square thin-walled tubular samples were deposited on the same baseplate, using the direct energy deposition laser printing process, to different build heights. The residual stresses were analysed in the as-printed condition by the neutron diffraction technique and correlated to qualitative predictions obtained using the ANSYS software suite. Good qualitative agreement between the stress measurements and predictions were observed. Both approaches revealed the existence of large tensile stresses along the laser track direction at the sections that were built last, i.e., centre of the top layers of the samples. This in addition leads to large tensile stresses at the outer edges (corners) which would have the effect of separating the samples from the baseplate should the stresses exceed the yield strength of the material. Such extreme conditions did not occur in this study, but the stresses did lead to significant distortion of the baseplate. In general, the microstructures and spatial elemental mapping revealed a strong correlation between the macro-segregation of elemental V and the distribution of the β-phase in the printed parts.

The paper opens with a summary of the major factors responsible for spontaneous combustion in coal discards. These include heat arising from the oxidation of coal and pyrite, and from the weting of dry or oxidized coal and pyrite; and certain petrographic conditions leading to self-ignition of the coal such as low rank, the presence of a high proportion of reactive constituents, and the occurence of highly porous and botanicaly structured inertinite macerals, The analyses of 6 samples from 2 discard dumps in the Witbank coalfield are included, which show that, according to a three-grade classification of liability to spontaneous combustion, one dump is 'reasonably liable' and the other is 'most liable', It is pointed out that factors other than liability to self-ignition determine the possible utilization of such discards, and that the prevention of oxidation is of great importance if they are to be utilized and spontaneous combustion to be prevented,

KingIn presenting his paper Dr W. J. Whiten outlined the basic concepts on which the control model was based and emphasized the fact that empirical models based as much as possible on theory were used to simulate each unit of the crushing plant. The final parameters of each model were computed using data collected from the plant. Unfortunately, the system did not permit accurate extrapolation but was successful when operating in the region from which the parameters were calculated.He concluded from the results of the test work that the crusher amperage was a critical parameter and that the utilization of the model gave a 15 per cent increase in the plant output. This was because the model predicted that a marginally fine grind would provide a significant increase in throughput. Dr Whiten elaborated on what constituted the multiple spline regression, explaining that it was a least-squares curve-fitting technique in one or more dimensions, where the calculation of coefficients in analytic expressions was replaced by the calculation of typical points on a very smooth curve called a spline function. The emphasis was placed on the shape and value of the curve or curves instead of on the coefficients as in analytic regression. A spline function was the line drawn between all points constituting the data set.Dr B. K. Loveday commented that the simulation was unusual in that the optimum throughput was considered to be the maximum throughput, which, surely, was limited by the crusher size. He also emphasized the importance of the interaction between both crushing and grinding circuits and added that in practice the optimum operating conditions were inter-dependent. Dr Whiten replied that in the case of the plant under consideration, the crushing process was not, in fact, the limiting operation.Mr C. E. Clifford indicated that the model was being used to simulate a number of crushing and grinding circuits at Mount Isa Mines. He reported that the model simulated the circuit satisfactorily for primary and secondary gap settings of 0,625 in. to 0,375 in., but that adjustment had to be made to the model parameters for gap settings of 0,250 in. to 0,125 in.In reply to a question from Dr D. M. Hawkins, Dr Whiten said that he preferred to use low-order splines with smaller segments rather than high-order spline functions with large segments."

On 23rd November, 1982, a party of 80 members of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy left the Wanderers Club grounds at 07hOO, and were driven in two luxury coaches to the stainless-steel mill of Southern Cross at Middelburg. Southern Cross is a trade name adopted by MS & A (Middelburg Steel and Alloys), who operate two Alloy Divisions (at Middelburg and Krugersdorp) and one Steel Division (at Middelburg). METAL '83 The International Precious Metals Institute has scheduled a seminar on the platinum -group metals for Williamsburg, DB.A., on 10th to 13th April, 1983, and has announced its keynote speakers for each of the seminar's five sessions. Metee '83 METEC - the International Exhibition for Metallurgical Technology and Equipment with Congress - which was to have been held in Dusseldorf from 14th to 20th May, 1983, has been cancelled, and will probably take place in June 1984. Sampling Sampling and sample preparation are crucial activities in many areas of chemical engineering, in the energy and food industries, in metallurgical processes, and in mining and mineral engineering.

The kinetics of cyanide loss were found to be first order under any given set of conditions, allowing rate constants to be easily determined. At room temperature and in the absence of activated carbon, some cyanide is lost by hydrolysis to hydrogen cyanide, but this does not occur to any significant extent at pH values higher than about 10. A higher rate of hydrolysis occurs when air agitation is used. When activated carbon is present, an additional carbon-catalysed oxidation reaction is responsible for a fairly high loss of cyanide. The evidence indicates a reaction mechanism that consumes oxygen and produces cyanate ion. Some of the cyanate thus produced decomposes to form a mixture of ammonia, carbonate, and urea, depending on the solution conditions. Additional cyanide is lost as a result of the adsorption of sodium cyanide by the activated carbon. At high temperatures, an additional hydrolysis reaction, which involves the formation of ammonium formate as an intermediate, occurs an/j is responsible for. a high loss of cyanide, leading ultimately to the formation of ammonia, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide. The presence of activated carbon has no effect on the rate of this reaction.

This paper focusses on the identification of operational opportunities in a 1100 tph pellet plant to reduce the specific energy consumption in its comminution circuit, which is designed to process magnetite ore and produce pellets to be used as raw material in the iron and steel industry. The assessment is carried out through a frequency analysis for three of the four processing lines of the plant, consisting of one ball mill each with an installed power of 4.5 MW and 280 tph of mill throughput design capacity. The methodology, as described in this paper, facilitates the visualisation and quantification of plant performance and provides a good first approach to prioritise alternatives for optimisation. In a pellet plant, grinding is a critical stage due to its high energy consumption and its major impact on the physical properties of the iron pellets, which quality depends to a large extent on grind size and Blaine index. From the evaluation that was performed it can be concluded that production line 2 has the lowest specific energy consumption of 15.1 kWh/t, while line 1 has the highest with an average of 16.6 kWh/t for the same type of ore. On the basis of the results and current operational practices, it is recommended to increase the average mill throughput from 240 tph to 265 tph, translating into specific energy reduction of 10%, without affecting the chemical and physical properties of the final product. The implementation of an HPGR for regrinding the magnetic concentrate is proposed to assure adequate specific surface area in case grinding coarser becomes an alternative, which would also be beneficial for the subsequent water recovery stages. Wet stirred media milling is a widely applied grinding process in the field of mineral processing to produce <10 μm ground materials. In this paper, the results of wet stirred media milling of different Ti, Fe and Cu-oxide and phosphate minerals are presented. During the experimental work, grinding of ilmenite, vivianite, hematite and cuprite was carried out in a continuous operation wet stirred media mill. During the experiments, the particle size distribution and specific surface area of the ground materials were determined after a certain grinding time, as well as measuring the specific grinding energy, thereby determining the grinding kinetics of the different minerals. The measurement results showed the differences and similarities in the grindability of the individual minerals. Nano particulate vivianite, hematite and ilmenite was successfully manufactured in a stirred media mill; however cuprite was characterised as the coarsest final product for the same grinding circumstances. "The solid-state reduction of ilmenite concentrate with graphite was studied under argon atmosphere at temperatures between 1050°C and 1350°C. The rate of reduction increased with increasing temperature and decreasing particle size, with the maximum extent of reduction found to be 80% at 1350oC with a particle size in the range of -106 +90 µm. The activation energy for the reduction reaction was calculated to be 257 kJ/mole. The trivalent iron oxide was reduced first to divalent iron oxide and then to metallic iron. An annular ring of a partially reduced oxide phase containing metallic nuclei was formed around the core of ilmenite, which grew in size as the original ilmenite core shrank with progressive reduction. The reduction of titanium dioxide also took place during this stage, which produced the Magneli oxides in the form of TinO2n-1. The metallic phase had very high Fe and low Ti contents throughout the reduction, whereas the partially reduced oxide phase adjacent to the metallic phase was high in Ti and depleted in Fe. The metallic phase globules formed during this stage were small and are considered suitable only for leaching and not for other concentration processes. The core of the particle generally retained the composition of the original ilmenite. The purpose of this work was to remove iron and increase the titanium oxide content of the ilmenite to produce a high-titanium containing charge for subsequent smelting.IntroductionThe titanium-bearing minerals ilmenite (FeTiO3) and rutile (TiO2) are the primary natural raw materials used in industry to produce titanium metal and titanium-based products. The common titanium-bearing minerals are ilmenite, rutile, anatase, brookite, leucoxene, arizonite, and perovskite. Although the formula of ilmenite is commonly expressed as FeTiO3, the mineral can accommodate Mn and Mg, which are chemically bound in the form of (Fe,Mn,Mg)TiO3. Ilmenite concentrate can also contain Fe2O3 and Al2O3 in addition to the physically separable oxides such as SiO2 and CaO. The crystal structure of ilmenite is an ordered derivative of the corundum structure with a trigonal-rhombohedral symmetry. Fe2+ and Ti4+ ions occupy the octahedral sites, leaving the tetrahedral sites unoccupied. In each FeTiO3 unit, there are three O2- ions creating three octahedral sites, two of which are occupied by Fe2+ and Ti4+ (Wilson et al., 2005)."
