First in a projected series on the use of flexible liners for support of underground mine openings, this report presents information obtained from an extensive review of the literature on this subject. It also includes results of some preliminary test work by the Bureau of Mines. Investigations thus far indicate that flexible liners offer numerous advantages over rigid-type sup-ports, By deforming in the direction of the applied stress, the stresses are redistributed from the liner to the surrounding material. The corresponding buildup of passive resistance in the direction of diametric extension causes an equalization of stresses around the liner, thereby enabling the liner to carry loads in a more efficient manner. However, additional experimental data are needed to establish design criteria that will permit maximum utilization of the flexible liner concept in mining. Testing of small-scale models, accompanied by measurement of free-field stresses in material surrounding the model, is recommended as the most suit-able approach to the problem. The experimental procedures necessary to such an approach are outlined in detail and a statistical design for the experiments is proposed. The report also describes a device developed by the Bureau for measuring free-field soil pressures to 1,000 psi and a technique for evaluating the response of the device.

Attempts have been made to electroplate titanium and zirconium from aqueous, nonaqueous, and fused-salt electrolytes. Metals were produced only in fused-salt electrolytes, the major product being sponge metal. All other electrolytes gave only partial reduction of the metal ions. Fused alkali borate electrolytes containing titanium salts gave titanium boride powders and coatings of poor adherence. Some of the problems encountered in the deposition of these metals and some of the aspects of titanium and zirconium chemistry involved are discussed. INTRODUCTION Titanium and zirconium are both relatively light, noncorrosive metals with both military and civilian uses. This has led to intensive investigations into the metallurgy of these metals. Both metals are high in the Electrochemical Displacement Series and are difficult to prepare in a pure state. At present they are prepared by reducing their chlorides, using magnesium. Electrolytic reductions have resulted in the preparation of fine powders or sponge of variable quality. It is believed that a good process of electroplating these metals on a baser metal would result in a very desirable product. The objective of the research summarized in this report was to investigate methods of electrodepositing these metals, with the idea of producing uniform, coherent plates. Most of the work was concentrated on titanium, the more abundant of the two metals. A system developed for titanium should be applicable to zirconium owing to their chemical similarity. Information gained from these experiments may also be applicable to the electro-winning of the metal.

A thermal decomposition study of the kerogen in three Colorado oil shales was made at different temperatures by heating the shales in the absence of oxygen at atmospheric pressure and measuring the decomposition products (gas, oil, and bitumen) formed. From these data the specific reaction rates, "k", for the thermal decomposition of kerogen were determined for each temperature studied, making it possible to calculate the time required to accomplish a given amount of decomposition within the temperature range. The influence of temperature on reaction rates was presented by plotting the data according to the Arrhenius equation, thus providing a means of estimating the values of "k" for any temperature within the range of this study. It was found that the specific reaction rates for the thermal decomposition of the kerogen in the three sampler were comparatively equal at corresponding temperatures.

Alaska contains many critical and strategic minerals that are scarce in the conterminous United States. Among these are tin, tantalum, and columbium. This Bureau of Mines report summarizes available data on the production, reserves, and occurrences of these minerals in Alaska. Alaska produces about 200,000 lb of tin per year, with historical production since 1901 estimated to have totaled 5,830,600 lb. Measured, indicated, and inferred tin reserves total over 140,000,000 Ib. Much of the tin production has been from the placer mines of the western Seward Peninsula; however, most of the reserves are in that area's lode deposits. Alaskan tin occurrences are part of a belt of tin mineralization that extends along the western coast of North and South America. The Alaskan portion of this "tin belt" comprises placer occurrences and lode occurrences of five major types: greisen, vein, skarn, pegmatite, and volcanogenic massive sulfide. Greisen and vein occurrences are the most abundant, but skarn deposits have historically been the most economically important. Columbium and tantalum have not been produced in Alaska; however, they may be recoverable as byproducts of tin, tungsten, gold, or uranium mining. Approximately 135,000 Ib of columbium oxide (Cb205) are inferred within the Tofty placer deposits in the Manley Hot Springs district.

A review is given of the nomenclature, sources, imports, statistics, common methods of preparation, and testing of mineral pigments. A description of the Deer Park-Spokane colored-clay district and the laboratory methods of preparation of these colored clays, others, and siennas follows. The mineral pigments were prepared by washing or grinding the original material as received and by calcination of the yellow ocher and brown sienna with and without manganese dioxide to produce red, brown, and black colors. These prepared powders were tested for fineness, oil absorption, and color as compared with well-known brands of commercial pigments. Similar tests were made with several basalt red clays occurring in the neighborhood of Salem, Oreg., and Kalama, Eatonville, and Clay City, Wash. The color particularly was studied, since this property is the most important commercial characteristic of the minerals. PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION Since the development of the clay industry in the Pacific Northwest, some curiosity and interest have been aroused by the red and yellow clay or ocherouslike material that has often been found associated with the commercial clay deposits. These include the red and yellow "paint pots" near Deer Park and Spokane in eastern Washington, a red clay at Clay City, another close to Eatonville in western Washington, and red basalt earths near Salem, Oreg., and along the Columbia River near Kalama, Wash. Several companies have been organized to produce pigment colors from two of these deposits but have either discontinued or never started operations.

This paper describes the Bureau of Mines development of a novel subsidence prediction methodology suitable to the mining and geologic conditions in the Northern Appalachian Coal Region. It describes the computation of vertical and horizontal movements, inclination, curvature, and horizontal strains. The substance of this method is the separation of the effects of lithology by introducing a correlation between hypothetically homogeneous overburden and existing lithologic conditions, while providing for different mining conditions, i.e., underground geometry and overburden thickness. The effects of lithology have been expressed in the form of a variable subsidence coefficient within the subsidence trough. The subsidence co-efficient is considered a constant for other predictive methods. Field data from 16 test sites at 11 Bureau longwall panel studies were used in the analysis. For each panel, the characteristics of the variability of the subsidence coefficient were defined. Regression analysis of the subsidence coefficients from all test sites on their locations relative to the edges of their respective panels yielded a third-degree polynomial equation. The results from additional longwall panel studies, not included in the regression analysis, were used to prove the validity of this method. To facilitate the use of this precalculatlon methodology, a computer program was written in BASIC for use on a personal computer.

"SUMMARYFor making a comparison of magnetic surveys measured from the ground and from the air, Worcester County, Maryland, was chosen as a proving ground. Vertical magnetic intensities were observed on the ground, and total magnetic intensities were observed from the air. A comparison of the two magnetic maps reveals similar large magnetic features, but these are displaced in some instances by distances greater than a mile. Magnetic terrane in the two charts is of the same type but often differs greatly in respective characteristic features.The sacrifices in accuracy that may be expected from the use of different systems of diurnal magnetic corrections on ground observations constitute a part of this report.INTRODUCTIONThe value of magnetic surveys for gaining information concerning the crystalline basement is recognized increasingly. That this topography is often reflected to a major degree in the overlying sediments with certain offsetting is well understood. Even where such sediments are deep, the surface topography of upper formations often reflects this bedrock topography to a certain degree."

Three-dimensional structural analyses of three instrumented areas of a deep, longwall coal mine have been performed using the finite element code BMINES. The three Instrumented areas include two single-entry portions and one double-entry portion of the Sunnyside No. 1 Mine, Sunnyside, Utah. The finite element models simulated the sequence of excavation in each test area: the advance of the entry, installation of structural supports, retreat of the longwall, caving behind the longwall, and accumulation and loading of the gob. The structural supports considered in these finite element models include rock bolts, wood cribs, concrete cribs, steel arch sets, and chocks. Mechanical simulation of the geologic environment is achieved through elastic/ perfectly plastic material models employing anisotropy to represent finely layered regions of the medium. The results of these calculations are com-pared with the instrumentation readings from the mine. These measurements include closures, crib loads, rock-bolt forces, and stress growth.

General economic conditions continued to improve in the second quarter of 1984 as real gross national product advanced at an annual rate of 7.5 percent (table 1). This followed an even larger first quarter annual rate increase of 10.1 percent. The slower second quarter growth was greeted as a sign that the economy is not over-heating. The signs of slowed growth in some sectors suggest that the recovery may continue well into 1985 without the inflation symptomatic of a rapid recovery. Most of the slowdown in growth was absorbed by business inventories, personal consumption of durable goods, and residential fixed investment. Business inventories grew by only 68 percent as much as in the first quarter, personal consumption for durable goods grew by 58 percent of the first quarter rate, and residential fixed investment slowed to only 44 percent of the first quarter growth. Sectors with accelerated growth in the second quarter included personal consumption of nondurable goods and of services, which increased at annual rates of 9.6 percent and 3.8 percent, respectively, and Federal purchases of goods and services, which increased at an annual rate of 47.9 percent.

As part of its goal to help maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating a fused-salt electrolytic procedure for producing zinc metal. A previous report described preliminary, small-scale work on the fused-salt electrolysis of ZnC12. The present report covers a more detailed investigation of the properties of ZnC12-alkali metal chloride electrolyte systems in relation to the production of zinc metal and also discusses electrolysis in largescale, internally heated cells. The effect of composition on bath stability, current efficiency, cell voltage, and liquidus temperature was determined for the ZnCla-NaC1-KC1, ZnC12-NaC1-LiC1, and ZnC12-KC1-LiC1 electrolyte systems. An electrolyte com-posed of 38 mole-pct ZnC12, 31 mole-pct NaC1, and 31 mole-pct KC1 gave the best overall results. Sludge (ZnO) formation in the ZnC12-NaC1-KC1, ZnC12-KC1-LiC1, and ZnC12-KC1 systems was investigated during prolonged electrolysis. The ZnC12-KC1-NaC1 electrolyte showed the least sludge formation. A 1,500-amp cell was operated using the ZnC12-NaC1-KC1 electrolyte at 500° C. Zinc metal was produced at the rate of 4.0 lb/hr with a current efficiency of 95 pct.

In the course of the Bureau of Mines investigations for suitable sources of high-aluminum clay for the production of alumina, the Whiteware clay deposit was examined in August 1942 by G.N. Bennett, mining engineer, Bureau of Mines, Montana District Office. This report presents the factual data obtained by the investigation, which also includes data on trenching and drilling, and the results of some refractory tests and chemical analyses of representative samples of the clay later taken from some of the best trench exposures and from adit dumps.

"Two source apportionment techniques have been applied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to aerosol measurements in diesel-equipped underground noncoal mines. The first technique is based on size-selective sampling and the premise that the diesel exhaust fraction of the aerosol is predominately submicrometer in size while the mineral dust fraction of the aerosol is mostly supermicrometer in size. The second technique, chemical mass balance (CMB) modeling, was used to referee the analysis of diesel and mineral dust aerosol concentrations with the size selective method.The size-distribution data were modeled using a lognormal regression to parameterize the submicrometer and supermicrometer fractions of the sampled aerosol and to estimate the mineral and diesel contributions to each. Using this analysis, 97 ± 2 pct of the submicrometer aerosol mass was attributable to diesel exhaust aerosol.The CMB analysis, applied to both fractions of the respirable mi11e aerosol, yielded the amount contributed to each by the diesel and dust aerosol sources. On the basis of this analysis, 94± 10 pct of the submicrometer fraction was diesel exhaust aerosol. As much as 20 pct of the diesel aerosol, however, was found in the supermicrometer fraction, requiring a correction of the submicrometer fraction results to account for the missing diesel mass. More accurate measurements will require a carbon-specific analysis of the aerosol.INTRODUCTION Measurement of the contribution of diesel exhaust to respirable aerosol in mine environments has become increasingly important because of current concerns over the occupational health effects resulting from exposure to diesel emissions. In response to this, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing and evaluating new sampling methods for measuring diesel aerosol in underground mines. Two such techniques are being studied by the Bureau, size selective sampling and CMB modeling. These techniques use measurable physical or chemical characteristics of a mine aerosol sample to infer the amount of diesel particulate material contained in the sample."

This report describes three types of optical dust probes that have been designed, built, and tested by the Bureau of Mines. Each of the probes measures dust cloud concentrations by the attentuation of light. The first is a single-path-length probe, the second is a double-path-length probe, and the third is a single-path-length probe that employs jets of air to keep the windows of the light source and detector free from dust coating. The theory of operation and the calibration procedures for each of the probes are described. The results of the Bureaus laboratory, mine, and field tests of the probes are also reported.

An investigation is made into whether commercially available equipment can be used to engineer effective emergency warning systems for underground coal mines. Discussions with members of the Bureau and the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration established that the preferred system should operate over the existing Pager Phone twisted pair, and broadcast an audio alarm. Applicable equipments such as voice band tone signaling equipment, alarm sounding equipment, mine telephones and complete alarm systems from over thirty manufacturers are listed. Factors affecting the range over which an alarm could be detected in representative mine situations were studied. These included (a) the subjective masking effects of typical background noise found in mines, such as that due to continuous miners (b) the attenuation of sound in mines (using both a theoretical and experimental results) and (c) the attention-getting qualities of different sound for miners. Audio alarm systems meeting the requirements can be installed and representative systems are described.

For nearly 30 years the Bureau of Mines has contended that mine explosions can be prevented and has pointed out to the industry ways and means by which they could be avoided. The record of co2l-mine explosions • during the past fiscal ?Bar bears out the :Bureau1s contention, inasmuch as fewer men were killed by coal-mi~e e:xplosions in the United States during that year than in :gi_y corresponding 12 months in the history of coal mining in the United States, insofar as records are available; and more than a year has elapsed since·a major explosion (in which five or more men were killed) has occurred, this being t.1-J.e first continuous 12- month period without a major coal-mine explosion disaster in the United States in more than 60 years. The methods of preventing mine e:iiplosions are well known to experienced, well-informed persons cngnged in coal mining. Despite this knowledge, many coal-mine operutors continue to use practices and methods that they should know have resulted in countless explosions, and mine workers persist in following past procedure or in breaking safety rules and practices almost certain eventually to result in disaster. ' Virtually all explosions are the result of human failure, such as carelessness or neglect by officials or workers or others. These human failures can be corrected chiefly by ed.ucation and proper and adequate supervision and strict discipline. In some instances mine officials are ·lax, careless, poorl~• informed, and often incompetent; end in many instances miners have repulsed the introduction of known preventive methods because of sheer obstinacy, ignorance, heedlessness, or possibly fear that the operator was trying to o'bta.in some unfair adva.,.'1. tago or would neglect some other phase of accident or e,:plosion prevention. The rate of the heterogeneous reaction between titanium-oxygen solid solutions and titanium trichloride in molten sodium chloride was determined at high temperatures. In the alpha phase, the reaction rate decreases uniformly with the increasing concentration of oxygen. The gamma crystalline form of titanium (above 33 atomic percent oxygen) was much less reactive than the alpha phase, and the reaction rate approached zero at 50 atomic percent oxygen. The activation energy for the reaction of titanium-oxygen solution containing 22.8 percent oxygen was 11.7 kcal/mole of TiCl3 as compared with 8.3 kcal/mole of TiCl3 for pure titanium.

This report is the 22d in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations.2 3/ A summary of work published during 1957 and of work in progress is presented. Details regarding the subjects treated in the publications may be found by referring to articles cited in the footnotes. The objective of the coal work of the Bureau of Mines is to obtain information that will lead to improved production and utilization of coal, thus conserving a most important national asset.4 5/ Though studies of mining methods and exploration of various coalfields ma; contribute directly to improved production, no less so does the work in health and safety. The many problems relating to chemical and physical properties of coal reflect the need for an understanding of these properties for the most effective use of coal in its various fields of application and for the development of new methods of processing coal. Studies of existing and proposed processes of combustion, carbonization, gasification and hydrogenation of coal are necessary for increased efficiency in its use. Engineering service provided by the Bureau is of direct value in the conservation program in preventing waste. The investigation reported herein is concerned with the generation and propagation of the strain wave produced in rock by the detonation of a high-velocity explosive. This report is the second of a series that will deal with this and related problems. The rock type in which these experiments were carried out was greenstone. Subsequent reports will discuss similar investigations in other rock types. Specifically, the problem under study is concerned with how certain characteristics of the strain wave, such as the maximum compressive and tensile strain, the maximum time rate of change of strain, the frequency components present in the pulse, the duration of the pulse, and other measurable characteristics, vary with the size of the charge and the distance from the detonation point to the point of measurement. . Other investigators have studied certain aspects of the generation and propagation problem in rock. However, in these studies the travel distances from the detonation to measurement point were comparatively long and the frequency components in the explosive wave were usually under 100 c.p.s. In this study the detonation to measurement distance covered. the range from 2 to 54 feet, and the strain gages and recording equipment employed in the instrumentation of the problem had a frequency response range from 200 to 10,000 c.p.s.
