This publication is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of producing uranium ore on the Colorado Plateau. The information it contains was gathered in 1955-58 and applies to eight small operations. (See fig. 1.) Mining costs have increased since the data were I collected, but the information should be helpful in estimating future costs I at similar deposits. The Bureau of Mines had early experience in the production of carnotite-type ores on the Colorado Plateau.3 4/ Under a cooperative agreement with the National Radium Institute in 1914-16, the Bureau mined and concentrated carnotite ore for recovery of radium, uranium, and vanadium. The ore was taken from claims in or near Long Park Montrose County, Colo., about 3 mi. south of La Salle Mining Co.'s La Salle mine, which is one of the mines described in this report. The Bureau leased the claims from Crucible Steel Mining & Milling Co., a subsidiary of Crucible Steel Co. of America, and from 1914 to 1916 produced 990 tons of high-grade ore, containing 2.6 pct. U308, and about 2,000 tons of mill-grade ore, containing 0.85 pct. U308. The high-grade ore was shipped directly to a radium-recovery plant built in Denver in 1914 under the cooperative agreement. There, commercial methods of extracting uranium, vanadium, and radium from carnotite ores were developed by Bureau personnel. The lower grade ore was concentrated at a small mill in Long Park before being shipped to Denver. The final recovery was 69,000 lb. of U308 and 8.8 g. of radium. The direct mining cost of producing the high-grade ore, including the labor to hand sort and sack it, was $35.96 per ton. Freighting the ore 58 miles to Placerville, Colo., the nearest rail point on the Rio Grande Southern Railway, cost $25.28 per ton, which included $4.55 per ton for ore bags and twine. "The town of Monson in Piscutaquis County, Maine is the, center of an important site industry. Monson slate has a nation-wide reputation, particularly for electrical switch boards, and the deposits have been worked for the manufacture of such products for many years. Open-pit quarrying is the method most commonly employed in obtaining slate. Underground methods have been used in the Peaon Bottom district near Delta, Pennsylvania, but the quarries that were thus operated are now abandoned. Underground methods have been used more extensively in foreign countries, the most famous example being the slate mines at Angers in France, where an over-head stoping method has been employed successfully for many it is only under special conditions that underground methods can be successfully used. If the deposit is wide and relatively thin, or if the material is too unsound to constitute a safe roof, open-pit methods must be used, for slate is too low-priced a commodity to justify the heavy expense of any timbering methods. It is only where the deposit is relatively narrow, of great depth, and sufficiently sound to afford a strong roof that ordinary mining may be employed.The best slate beds in two of the three quarries operated at Monson are no worked by underground methods. The chief bed worked by the Portland Monson Slate Co. is 10 feet thick, stands vertical and strikes N. 63º F. The slaty cleavage is vertical and crosses the strike of the beds at an angle of 5 to 10°. The grain or second direction of splitting is vertical and perpendicular to the cleavage. In addition to the 10-foot bed, to 2-foot beds and one 5-foot bed are available but are not now utilized. In the Monson Maine Slate Co. quarry (the old Pond quarry),a greater number of beds available, but at present quarrying is confined to a single bed about 9 feet thick which dips 30º S.E. and strikes N. 47ºF. The slaty cleavage is vertical and strides N. 45º F., while the grain strikes N. 45-50º W. and is also vertical."

Whole-body vibration occurs when the body is supported on a surface which is vibrating. Occupational exposures to whole-body vibration mainly occurs in the transportation industry, but also in association with other industrial process. Epidemiological studies have frequently indicated an elevated health risk for the spine in workers exposed to whole-body vibration. With regarding to train or bus operators, a fall of drivers’ wakefulness level because of fatigue is often pointed out. This decrease in wakefulness results in an increase of the occurrence of accidents. However, a study of how whole-body vibration affects people's level of wakefulness has not been done. To test the hypothesis that exposure to whole-body vibration has a certain effects on level of wakefulness, the change of a subjective wakefulness level and changes of electroencephalogram (EEG) were observed under experimental exposure to short-term whole-body vibration. Methods Subjects are ten healthy male university students, with an average age of 20.7 ± 1.8 years old, and they are all nonsmokers. Using the equipment (CV-300, AKASHI) of whole-body vibration generator, we consider an exposure environment of actual driver work, so that set the frequency and the acceleration level as 10 Hz and 0.6ms-2 r.m.s.. The subjects were exposed to whole-body vibration in the seated position and exposure time was fixed for 12 minutes. Subjective wakefulness level was evaluated using the questionnaire of VASS (Visual Analog Sleepiness Scale) and KSS (The Kwansei Gakuin Sleepiness Scale). For the electroencephalogram (EEG) measurement, it was equipped with the electrodes based on the International ten-twenty electrode system (C3-A2, O1-A2, O2-A1). EEG activity in the alpha frequency band (8 – 12 Hz) is one of the most typical physiological indicator which represent the transition from wakefulness to sleepiness. AAT (Alpha Attenuation Test) which repeats three times each opened and closed eye for 1 minute was performed in a seating position with directions of the researcher in the beginning, in the middle and in the end of exposure to whole-body vibration. For analysis, power spectral analysis was conducted over the last 6 min of EEG, and wakefulness levels were defined as the ratio of mean alpha power during eyes closed versus eyes opened. The laboratory was kept at room temperature (21 ± 1.0 degrees C), humidity was 50 ± 5%, noise level was 63.6 dB (A) eq, and illumination 510 lx. Each experiment was started around 10:00 am to minimize the effect of biorhythm.

"INTRODUCTION Frequent attempts have be,made in the electrolysis of molten magnesium chloride to regenerate the electrolyte by allowing the chlorice generated at the anwdo to read with magnesium oxide and carbon within the melt according to the following reactions: (1) MgO + C + CL2 = MgCl2 + CO,(2) 2MgO + C + 2C12 = 2MgC12. + CO2.The principal advantages of such a procedure are that (1) the direct source of magnesium is magnesium oxide rather than the more expensive dehydrated magnesium chloride and (2) it is not necessary to handle or dispose of large quantities of chlorine or hydogen chloride.Grätzll 5/ proposed the use of an MgO carbon feed in a more or,less compact form in the anode compartment, of the cell. In a patent issued to Magall Aktiengecellschaft, 6/ a compact mixture of MgO and carbon is used as the anode itself. Kato 7/ and Backer 8/ add the feed in finely divided form to the surface of the anode compartment. The Bureau of Mines 2/ recently made a pilot-plant investigation of the electrolysis of suspension of MgO and carbon from chloride melts, in which it was found that although,current efficiencies of 60 to 70 percent were obtainable, the formation of sludges containing MgO, carbon, and magnesium seriously interfered with the operation of the cell,"

Over the past decade, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has studied longwall gate road stability at four mines in the Book Cliffs and Wasatch Plateau Coalfields of Utah. These operations are characterized by multiple-seam mining, abruptly varying cover depths to 914 m (3;000 ft), and massive rigid, sandstone units in the main roof or floor. Such conditions encourage severe bumping, roof instability, and occasional floor heave problems.' Various gate road configurations have been employed to alleviate' these problems. Although the mines have comparable basic conditions, the lithologies and qualities of the immediate roof, floor; and seam ate different in each mine and often vary in a single mine. Gate road systems that mitigate hazards in one mine may prove inappropriate in another or for different areas of the same mine. This report relates the geology of the coalfields; describes the location, geologic setting, specific mining conditions, operating history, and the USBM field study and results or conclusions for each mine; summarizes the relative performance of the gate road systems; and emphasizes the need for site-specific geotechnical data to evaluate gate road conditions and performance.

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in research on ground probing radars for detection of geologic hazards in advance of mining. Penetration distances and interpretation models depend on the dielectric properties and wave propagation characteristics for coal measure stratified media. Relative dielectric constants and dissipation factors were measured under ambient conditions for Pittsburgh Seam coal measure rock over the frequency range of 20 to 100 MHz by the susceptance-variation method. The rock types measured were representative sedimentary rock located above the Pittsburgh Coal Seam. Extreme values for the computed attenu-ation distance ranged from 1.7 m at 100 MHz for siltstone to 230 m at 20 MHz for a particular limestone.

"INTRODUCTION The First Supplemental National Defense Appropriation Act, approved August, 25,, 1941, authorized the Bureau of Mines to investigate sources of raw, material for western production and appropriated funds for that purpose. Numerous iron deposits and prospects in the Western States were investigated. Among those selected for more detailed investigation were tile Apache and Chodiski deposits in Arizona.The United States Geological Survey had examined these deposits in 1929 3/ and estimated that ""the quantity of minable ore reasonably to be expected in this locality will reach 10,000,000 long tons, but it will require prospecting by core drill to demonstrate this quantity with certainty"". C. H. Johnson, a mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines, made a preliminary examination in October 1941 and proposed exploration of the Apache deposit Canyon Creek.A trench sampling project was set up, and work at the Apache deposit commenced in November 1941. Mapping, trenching, and sampling of outcrops was completed in March 1942. Trenches were laid out at approximately 200-foot intervals for about 9,200 feet along the iron outcrop east of Canyon Creek, and channel samples were taken across the iron formation. The outcrop also was explored by trenching and sampling along a 1,900-foot outcrop on the west side of Canyon Creek.The first diamond-drilling campaign at Apache was initiated in May 1942 and continued to January 1943, when work was suspended owing to depletion of funds. Six holes spaced at approximately 500-foot intervals and, 500 feet back from the outcrop on the east side of Canyon Creek were drilled through the iron formation during this period.While this drilling was in progress, the Chediski deposit was mapped, trenched, and sampled. The trenches were spaced at intervals of approximately 800 feet along 10,000 feet of the iron-ore outcrop."

This paper, describing the concentrator practice of the United Verde Copper Co., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of HISTORY The United Verde concentrator was constructed in accordance with recommendations based on certain novel reasons which were quite different from those usually justifying the expenditure of such an amount. Concentrator operations started in March, 1927, although the metallurgical staff had considered for several years the eventual addition of a concentrator department.

Potash is one of the principal foods and is necessary for the growth of most vegetables, grains, and fruits. For many years, this country depended entirely upon foreign sources for its supply of potassium compounds. However, during the last 15 years the domestic production of potash has gradually increased, as shown in table 1. 7/ Imports now supply only half of the American market. In 1936, the equivalent of 207,000 tons of K20 was imported, and 210,000 tons was produced domestically. In 1935, domestic consumption was approximately 420,000 tons of potash, a 57 percent increase over that for 1934 and surpassing previous peaks of 1928 and 1930.

Evaluation of incinerated sewage sludge as a secondary resource for aluminum, phosphorus, and minor constituents such as copper and zinc was initiated as part of the Bureau of Mines secondary resource program. The elemental composition of sludge ash for 14 plants in 11 U.S. cities was determined. Comparing industrialized cities with cities where most of the sewage is domestic, significant differences in heavy metal content were noted. Various parameters were investigated affecting the extraction of metals and phosphorus from a typical industrial city sludge ash and from a Palo Alto, Calif., sludge ash with a high precious metal content. Three extraction-recovery procedures for metals and phosphorus using sulfuric acid leaching, ion exchange, and various precipitation techniques were investigated. The last procedure developed was a combination approach using a three-stage countercurrent sulfuric acid leach that recovered most of the economic values from the sludge ash and also removed the leachable fraction of elements of environmental concern.

This report examines the feasibility of Employee Assistance Plans for the coal industry. Three issues are examined in detail. First, the prevalence of off-the-job factors such as alcoholism, drug abuse, and marital problems are examined in a sample of miners from the eastern, midwestern, and western underground coal fields. Then data were presented that examined the link between these off-the-job factors and behaviors critical to the mines such as absenteeism and turnover. Lastly, we examined the effectiveness of the major Employee Assistance Program in underground coal mining--the HELP Program. The report contains recommendations on whether coal mining companies should implement these programs and how these programs should be designed.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) classifies hearing loss as a separate illness category. Hearing loss accounted for 11% of all illnesses in 2005 (U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2006a). According to occupational data for coal mining provided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) from 2000 to 2005, operators that exceeded 100% noise dosage were from only seven types of machines: auger miners, bulldozers, continuous mining machines, front end loaders, roof bolters, shuttle cars (electric) and trucks (Title 30 CFR Part 62, 2000-2005). Roof bolting machine operators rank second among all underground machine operators that exceed 100% noise dose. In the first paper of this series (R. 1. 4333) on the cooperative work with the Eagle-Pitcher Mining & Smelting Co., changes in the nature of the sinter feed were measured by corresponding changes in the retorting temperatures necessary to distill zinc at the best rates; the firing schedules summarized such changes. In this paper, third of the series, are noted same of the changes in practice that were brought about by the need to treat more fused, glassy, and "hard" sinter, as the operators qualify it. Losses of uncondensed zinc were increased by adding zinc-bearing materials from which? the zinc was readily distillable to hard sinter requiring higher-temperatures for zinc distillation. The rates of zinc distillation were increased by grinding the fuel finer; there were few benefits and loss of dust on grinding the sinter finer, unless the fine ?coal and fine sinter were brought into contact by pelletizing, and the pellets made but little dust.

Passive methods of treating mine water use chemical and biological processes that decrease metal concentrations and neutralize acidity. Compared with conventional chemical treatment, passive methods generally require more land area, but use less costly reagents and require less operational attention and maintenance. Currently, three types of passive technologies exist: aerobic wetlands, organic substrate wetlands, and anoxic limestone drains. Aerobic wetlands promote mixed oxidation and hydrolysis reactions, and are most effective when the raw mine water is net alkaline. Organic substrate wetlands promote anaerobic bacterial activity that results in the precipitation of metal sulfides and the generation of bicarbonate alkalinity. Anoxic limestone drains generate bicarbonate alkalinity and can be useful for the pretreatment of mine water before it flows into a wetland. Rates of metal and acidity removal for passive systems have been developed empirically by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Aerobic wetlands remove Fe and Mn from alkaline water at rates of 10-20 and 0.5- 1.0 g. m-2? d-1, respectively. Wetlands with a composted organic substrate remove acidity from mine water at rates of 3-9 g. m-2? d-1?. A model for the design and sizing of passive treatment systems is presented in this report.

This digest, based upon a translation" of certain portions of the 1930 law, covers the pertinent points of what has been termed "The New Mining Law of Luxemburg," the Grand Ducal Order (Arrêté) of April 26, 1930, concerning the exploitation of "mines, minières, and carrières, 4 and abrogating the order of January 2, 1891, concerning the same subject." The Duchy of Luxemburg, which between 1735 and 1815 was French, adopted as its basic mining law the French Law of April 21, 1810, and an Imperial Decree of January 3, 1813. The Luxemburg Government later supplemented and modified this legislation by the laws of June 12, 1874, April 30, 1890, and May 10, 1898, which, with article 36 of the Constitution, are to be taken into consideration in a complete survey of mining legislation. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the effect of ground water control on the dewatering of phosphatic clay wastes. Two storage impoundments were constructed. One impoundment was surrounded on three sides with a series of well points (shallow vertical wells) to lower the ambient water table and the second impoundment served as a control. Ground water was pumped from the area surrounding the test impoundment for a period of 490 days. A constant pumping rate of 60 gal/min resulted in a water table drawdown of 13 ft, approximating the bottom of the impoundment. At the end of the test period percent solids in the test impoundment was 35 pct, while in the control impoundment percent solids was only 26.8 pct. Percent solids of greater than 30 pct is required for capping and final reclamation using fertile overburden.

[This paper, which describes the milling practice at the San Guillermo concentrator of the Compania Industrial "M Potosi", S.A., located at Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico, is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The concentrator treats lead-zinc-silver ore at the rata of 2,300-2,400 tons of dry material daily and produces lead concentrate and zinc concentrate by selective flotation methods.
