This paper describes a generic approach to analysing the environmental and economic performance of a global mineral/metal value chain, with the express view of improving the quality of prospective decision-making within the industry in order to ensure more sustainable outcomes. The starting point for this analysis is the development of a global stocks flows and transformations model, for the metal of interest. Any aspect of the value chain, e.g. “metals refining, “goods manufacture”, “use and disposal”, can be assessed, either relative to other stages in the value chain, or in more detail by focusing on the technologies used within that stage. The use of this model as a decision support tool is explored here for the case of copper. Both primary and secondary production routes are enumerated, covering a range of processes, for seven distinct geographic regions round the globe. The value of the modelling approach is explored for different energy mixes. In particular, the case study examines the impact of increased recycling on the (re) distribution of global and regional environmental impacts for technologies-in-place in these different regions.

Grinding and flotation operations deliver better-optimized performance when they are monitored and controlled in terms of the minerals they process rather than as elemental assays that we usually refer to. Mesh of grind (MoG), liberation, floatability, grade and recovery etc. are more directly related with the minerals and their characteristics rather than the elemental assays. Hence, online analyzers only provide the status for the grade and recovery of metals and not the direction for the enhanced performance. Central Research and Development Laboratory (CRDL) and Rampura Agucha Mine (RAM) mill section of Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) jointly undertook various survey campaigns in the grinding and flotation process streams. Grinding circuit surveys involved systematic collection of representative samples from different grinding circuit streams under stabilized conditions for monitoring particle size and process mineralogy details across individual grinding circuit. Flotation survey campaigns included study of fort-nightly / monthly composites of un-ground flotation feed, lead concentrate, lead tailing, zinc concentrate and final tailing samples for size distribution details in the 150 ? 38 micron range, chemical analysis and mineral characterization through optical microscope. This work details the investigations results and their implications on beneficiation performance. Grinding circuit survey campaigns supported the task for modifying the originally installed configuration of hydrocyclones, to limit recovery losses due to excess grinding of soft galena and related silver minerals. Flotation plant surveys helped in adjusting flotation circuit process parameters to reduce loss of liberated and floatable galena and sphalerite grains into their respective tailing streams. For a correct evaluation of the performance of any process, it is important to reconcile the data gathered in the plant from the material balance point of view for all the streams flowing in and flowing out of the process unit. There are two main approaches to reconciliation of data, which involve minimization of the sum of the squares of: (i) the closure residuals and (ii) the component adjustments; both weighed with the estimated variances of the components. Though, these approaches have served us well, it has not been possible to ascertain if the reconciled values for various components and the split factors obtained using these approaches are truly the best estimates. In this paper, this aspect has been investigated by analyzing pseudo-experimental data of known error structure on size classification of particles in a hydrocyclone. Three types of basic error structures were considered for the measured component values: absolute error, relative error and chi-square error. The error structure was modified by adding a random component of error using normally distributed random numbers corresponding to zero mean and different levels of variance. By carrying out a large number of simulation experiments, it has been shown that in the presence of random errors, irrespective of the basic error structure of data, which is usually unknown, the chi-square error minimization criterion can be used to obtain most reliable results. The flotation of pyrite which be pretreated by electrochemical ways under external controlled voltages in different pH is explored. The floatability of pyrite is increased indistinctively after being pretreated in acidic and xanthate environment; Whereas, it is increased obviously between 400~800 millivolt in alkaline and xanthate condition. The reason for higher recovery of pyrite is that oxida-tion reaction, which results in S0 and S02, takes place on its surface, and that ethyl xanthate is oxi-dized into dixanthogen. In the meantime, the kinetics and mechanism is also studied.

A sulfate reducing bacteria strain (named SRB-A) is isolated from sanitary wastewater by using anaerobic technology of Hungate. The studies of physiological, biochemical and phylogenic of the isolated strain are carried out. The colonies of the strain are circle. Cells that are slightly curve, rod-shaped with the size of 1.0~3.0µm in length and 0.8~1.0µm in width. The optimum temperature for growth of the organism is 30~35°C. The optimum pH for growth is 7.0~7.2. Strain SRB-A can use sodium lactate, sodium citrate, sodium acetate, ethanol and acetone as electronic acceptor but can not use glycerol, glucose, sucrose and sodium oxatate. The isolated strain reduces sulfate, sulfide, sulfur, DSMO and FeCl3, then nitrate and nitrite can not be used. The strain has higher tolerance of NaCl, and the optimum growth occurs in the presence of 5%~8% (w/v) NaCl. The result of 16S rDNA sequence analysis indicates that the isolated strain SRB-A is the most similar to Desulfo-vibrio halophilus, and the level of the similarity was 98.4%. The isolated strain has a stronger ability to reduce sulfate, and the level of sulfate reduction reaches about 90% at pH 7 in the liquid medium. 0.6 to 0.8 is the optimum COD/SO42- in the medium for the isolated strain to show better ability to reduce sulfate. At pH 2.5 the level of removal of Cu2+ reaches 96.3%. Under the condition of pH 3.5, the level of removal of Zn2+ reaches 92.6%. When the value of pH reaches about 7, the Fe3+ is precipitated by the formation of Fe(OH)3, and Fe3+ is removed up to 89.4% at last.

"The thermochemical technology for recovery gold, silver from mature flotation tailings of pyrite ores by two-stage sintering with chlorine-ammonium reagents and leaching of bakes with water is developed. The economic effect of the technology implementation is calculated. KEYWORDS Gold and silver recovery, mature flotation tailings, pyrite ores, chlorine-ammonium reagents, leaching INTRODUCTION The relevance of processing the technogenic reserves of ore mining and concentration wastes accumulated over the long operation periods of mineral deposits is beyond doubt. Hundreds of tons of precious and non-ferrous metals that were not recovered during the primary processing are concentrated in the accumulated wastes. For example, tailing storage facilities (TSF) at the mineral processing plants in the Southern Urals region of Russia hold more than one hundred tons of gold and thousands of tons of silver in the mature flotation tailings (MFT) of copper pyrite ores. Secondary processing of technogenic materials is facilitated by the fact that they are preprocessed — ground and compactly deposited on the surface, but complicated by the low (compared to ores) grade, uneven distribution of the valuable minerals, altered and unstable material composition of the mineral feed. This leads to low recovery rates of valuable metals by conventional physicochemical processing methods. It is necessary to develop innovative methods of deep integrated processing of industrial wastes, based on the study of the material composition of specific technogenic mineral resources and based on ensuring the environmental safety of the resulting secondary waste. MATERIALS AND METHODS The object of this study are the MFT of Uchaly Concentrator in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia, which processes copper pyrite and copper-zinc ores. According to the data of particle size, chemical, X-ray phase, and optical microscopic analyzes, samples of the MFT are characterized by considerable particle fineness (the fraction of the size class -41 µm is 89-90%), low grade of gold (1.7-2.0 g/t) and silver (18.0-19.5 g/t), comparable grades of iron (23.0-26.8%) and sulfur (28.1-28.7), but different grades of copper (0.12 - 0.73%) and zinc (0.34-1.26%). The most common mineral in the samples is pyrite (50 - 56%), found in intergrowth with grains of other sulfides (0.1-4%) - sphalerite, tennantite, chalcopyrite, covellite. Quartz and aluminosilicates are the dominant rock minerals (21-36%). Based on the results of the phase analysis, it was established that approximately 70% of the gold in the samples is found in a form that is resistant to cyanidation — it is locked in sulfides (52-56%) and quartz and coated by films. Along with sulfides and rock minerals, common gold and silver minerals (chalcogenides, intermetallides, native gold) in the form of submicro- and nano-sized precipitates are also associated with intergrowth of a complex structure. These features of the material composition allow classifying the MFT of the pyrite ores as a mature feed material and emphasize the need for chemical non-cyanide methods to recover gold and silver from the mature minerals and associations they are found in."

The biggest chromium mineral processing plant in Albania is Bulqiza plant. It has been in operation for more than 20 years, treating low-grade chromium ores grade 20 ? 26 % Cr2O3 and producing chromium concentrates grade 48 ? 50 % Cr2O3. About 2 million tons of tailings with 13 % Cr2O3 content are stocked in a dam close to the plant. Mineral processing of low-grade chromium ores with less than 16% Cr2O3 content is unprofitable because the mining expenses are high comparing with the current market prices of chromium concentrate. Recycle and enrichment of existing tailings is profitable, because there are no underground mining expenses in this case and because that this kind of raw material does not need expenses operation of crushing and grinding. The existing plant is in operation for more than 8 years treating existing tailings as raw material. Grade of concentrate in the value 40 % Cr2O3 and Cr2O3 recovery in the value 30-35% in the plant are considered low. The main reason of low concentrate grade and recovery is high content of particles under 100 microns, the slimes, in raw material. In the paper is described the study carried out to improve enrichment of the tailings, as well as analyses of existing process, raw material and products. It is concluded that majority of lost is present in the slimes which are not separated in existing spiral separators and shaking tables. Basing in the study is composed the new flow sheet of recycling and concentration of the tailings to produce chromium concentrate grade 41 ? 42 % Cr2O3 and recovery 60 %, decreasing in this way the concentrate production cost two times. In the paper are presented the tests and results of concentration of particle size fraction under 100 microns, using gravimetric, magnetic and flotation methods, as well as equipment and machines suitable for slimes treatment and concentration.

Vast amount of fly ash, bottom ash and slags, are produced each year due to coal combustion in thermal power plants. These products consist of mainly unburned carbon and inorganic compound (such as: silica, alumina, iron oxides, magnesium oxide, phosphorus oxide etc.). These are valuable minerals and can be recycled or recovered if properly processed. One third of the material find application as an ingredient in cement and other construction products, the rest is held in dams or similar dumps, which results in a hazardous impact on the environment, polluting soil and ground water. The unproductive use of land, the associated long term financial burden maintenance and negative environmental impacts have led to realization that alternative uses for combustion by-products as a value added product beyond incorporation in construction materials are needed. At present, there is an intensive search to increase their uses. Other uses of coal combustion residues include as raw material in brick and ceramic tile fabrication, as filler in plastics and paints, extraction of valuable mineral materials, production of zeolites and soil and mine waste treatments. Separation of unburned carbon from bottom ashes by means of flotation was conducted in order to increase the possibility of the recycling of coal combustion wastes. In the flotation experiments collector, dispersant and frother amount, pulp density and pH were tested as variables. After first stage flotation experiments, at optimum conditions, the carbon content was reduced down to 5.58 % in the tailings fraction. This fraction meets the industrial specifications and can be utilized as a cement additive. At the same conditions the carbon content of the concentrate increased to 44.72 % at a carbon recovery of 65.81 %. After the cleaner stage flotation experiment the carbon content of the product is enhanced to 62.53 %. This fraction can be blended back into the coal feed to the power plant boilers.

Flotation froth machine vision systems provide consistent real-time measurements pertaining to the state of the flotation cell being monitored. Typical measurements include froth velocity, froth colour, froth texture and froth stability. This paper presents the results from test work conducted on the molybdenite rougher circuit at the Kennecott Utah Copper Concentrator during February 2006. Machine vision results show that it is not possible to accurately determine bubble size distribution information for the molybdenite froth, despite using state-of-the-art methods. Instead, it is necessary to make use of texture measurements to classify the various different froth states. Numerous combinations of texture measurements and classifiers are used to determine the best combination. Results show that the Fourier ring based texture measurements perform the best when both K nearest neighbour and Gaussian mixture model classifiers are used. The concentrate grade of the flotation cell is modelled using combinations of froth velocity and froth texture descriptors. The results show that by using a linear combination of these descriptors rather than either one by itself it is possible to account for a much larger percentage of the variation observed in the concentrate grade data. Adjusted R2 values of 92% and 84% are achieved when modelling the copper and the molybdenite concentrate grade respectively.

The objective of this research was, to evaluate the hazard of heavy metals in the soil around the National Iranian Lead & Zinc (NILZ) Company. In this study, 38 samples of soil around the NILZ factory were collected using standard sampling method, so that, the heavy metals Pb, Zn, Cd and Cr have been evaluated. The concentration of heavy metals were measured and compared with standard limits. The results show that the hazard of heavy metals in soil is not so serious and the content of Pb in just 5 percent of samples, and the content of Zn in just 3 percent of samples were above standard limits and the concentration of Cd and Cr were under the standard limits. Average, variance and standard deviation of the elements are calculated and with due attention to the standard deviation, Pb and Zn are seen to be more distributed than Cd and Cr. Also the isograde curve of heavy metals was drawn using software called Surfer. These curves showed that the heavy metals are concentrated at particular distances from the factory. The surface-active agent, like sodium humate, in the present systems produces a very stable suspension. Saline water up to 15% is used as a flocculating agent for recovery of water from the dispersed phase containing 1% solid. The recovered water in the presence of humate at different concentrations (0.05-0.2%) and at pH 8 also produces a stable dispersed phase of iron ore fines and tailings. The beneficiation techniques adopted in the present systems can increase ~ 2-3% iron value in the concentrate of iron ore fine, however, for tailings the increase in iron value is not observed. In the frame of Bioshale FP6 project, the bioprocessing of a polymetallic and polymineral concentrate produced in an industrial operation in Lubin, Poland, was assessed. Following successful batch culture tests, processing in continuous conditions was tested to determine the main specifications for the application of the stirred-tank technology to this sulphide concentrate from black shale ores. The experimental work was carried out in a laboratory-scale unit consisting of 3 stirred tanks (50L or 20L) using an acidophilic and moderate thermophilic bacterial population. Different configurations of the unit and key operating parameters were tested (nutrient medium composition, solids concentration, rates of agitation and aeration). Scientific and technical approaches, such as bacterial community structure and mineralogical analysis were implemented in order to better understand the chemical and biochemical reactions occurring in the system. Using the data produced during the continuous operation, downstream processing assessment for both copper and silver recovery was also carried out. The best copper recovery obtained in the continuous operation was 92% and a hot brine leaching of the bioleach residue (PLINT process) allowed to recover 92% of the silver. A preliminary tech-no-economic evaluation of Lubin concentrate bioprocessing including bioleaching, copper and silver recoveries demonstrated the potential economic feasibility. Recovery of silver plays an important role in the economy of the process. This study presents promising values to further investigate this bioprocessing option.

New technology for on-line particle size analysis of mineral slurries has opened up new applications for particle size measurement. In some cases the particle size distribution of the final concentrate is an important quality issue. This paper discusses established on-line particle size analysis technologies and presents experiences on the use of a new technique employing laser diffraction in several minerals processing operations. The main innovations in the new instrument are a simple dilution system and multiple scattering correction algorithm, which allows wide solids content variations of diluted sample in the measurement cell. Representative sample for laser measurement is produced by a simple and reliable dilution system. The applications discussed are; Blaine number measurement of Fe concentrate before pelletizing, grinding of variable batches of ore and paste thickener control.

Tailing slurry is usually abrasive and possesses high viscosity. This paper examines the existing iron ore beneficiation process and focuses on some of the key environmental issues related to the disposal of tailings. It identifies that almost 32% of the iron ore extracted ends up as tailings and they are usually disposed in slurry form in tailing ponds. By the year 2000, 27 Mt of iron ore tailings were generated in India, which has become one of the biggest waste handling problems to the industry. Characteristics of the tailings vary widely. So the physical nature of tailings cannot be considered separately in isolation without considering the mill effluent from the beneficiation plant. In the present investigation, studies were carried out in three iron ore mines in India to evaluate the characteristics of tailings from the beneficiation plant. The tailing samples were collected from different locations during a time period of one year and analyzed. The results will be discussed and the characteristics of the tailings have been evaluated. The disposal system of tailings at the three mines was evaluated. The research on the settling characteristics of tailings indicates that the area provided in the existing tailing ponds in India is much more than that of the experimental results. This paper concludes that sedimentation tests are essential to design appropriate tailings pond with respect to size. In the proposed scheme it is suggested that an additional unit process, i.e. sedimentation tank be added to the process before the disposal of tailings to the tailing pond.

Most of the Iron ore washing plants set up in India in the earlier days consist of sizing of the ore by dry / wet screening, washing and classification by screw classifiers. In this classical approach, iron values were lost in the form of fines and ultrafine into the tailing ponds as they had little commercial value in those days and accumulated in huge quantities over the years. As the high grade deposits are getting exhausted and the demand for high grade finer material for pellet making is ever increasing, focus is shifting towards recovering the values from the erstwhile tailing ponds by column flotation. This is also supposed to mitigate to a certain extent the environmental problems caused by the ever expanding and unmanageable tailing dams. A case study is presented wherein a composite sample is prepared from samples drawn systematically from multi - locations in a sprawling tailing dam. Laboratory scale column flotation tests on this composite tailings sample, basically originating from two operating iron ore beneficiation plants of JSW Steel Ltd., one of the leading producers of steel in India are found to be encouraging. Desliming followed by reverse and cationic flotation tests using flotation column resulted in the concentrate of 61.88% Fe, 4.81% SiO2, 2.52% Al2O3 and 3.30% loss on ignition (LOI) from the tailings analyzing 57.86% Fe, 7.10% SiO2, 3.52% Al2O3 and 6.14% LOI with 52% weight recovery. The causes for the quality improvement could be attributed to desliming of un-liberated ultra fines of kaoline and hydrated iron oxides and their further reduction by efficient flotation process. The process and the cationic collector developed for this purpose are adopted in the new flotation plant created to treat these tailings. "Sulfidization-amine is the most effective method for the recovery of smithsonite (ZnCO3), however the interface interaction details remain unclear. The sulfidization-amine flotation mechanism of smithsonite has been studied by Density Functional based Tight Binding (DFTB+) method in this paper. The slab model of ZnCO3 (101) surface was built and the adsorptions of a monolayer of HS- and S2- ions were conducted to model the sulfidization effect on the ZnCO3 (101) surface adsorption. DDA hardly interacts with the hydrated ZnCO3 (101) surface. Under the low concentration of Na2S, HS- ions form a Zn-SH-SH structure on the ZnCO3 (101) surface, which hinders the interaction between DDA and surface Zn atoms. Under the high concentration of Na2S, a layer of ZnS is formed on ZnCO3 (101) surface, which is favorable for the adsorption of DDA on the surface. This is consistent with the flotation practice where smithsonite flotation requires a large amount of sodium sulfide. The results could provide a microscopic investigation into the sulfidization-amine flotation mechanism of smithsonite.INTRODUCTIONSmithsonite (ZnCO3) is an important and typical oxide mineral of zinc. It is a semi-soluble salt mineral with a solubility product constant of 1.46 × 10-10 (Weast, 1973). The most common and effective method to recover oxidized zinc ores is froth flotation (Caproni et al., 1979; Pereia and Peres, 2005; Kashani and Rashchi, 2008). It is well known that the flotation of oxidized zinc minerals is much more difficult than the flotation of zinc sulphide minerals (Hosseini and Forssberg, 2007).The recovery of zinc oxide ores with poor floatability attracts more and more attention due to the depletion of easy-recovered of zinc sulfide ores.Sulfidization-amine flotation, which using Na2S as sufidizing agent and amine as collector (Mckenna et al., 1949; Rey, 1954; Abramov, 1961; Rey, 1979; Hosseini and Forssberg, 2007). This method is the most successful technology used for zinc oxide minerals flotation in large-scale industrial applications since it was invented in the 1950s (Önal et al., 2005; Pereira and Peres, 2005). There have been numerous experimental researches on the sulfidization-amine flotation of smithsonite. Shi et al., (2013) studied solution chemistry of smithsonite flotation system. Feng and Wen (2017) studied the formation of zinc sulfide species on smithsonite surfaces and its response to flotation performance. Wu et al., (2017) investigated the sulfidization behavior of smithsonite with the use of zeta potential, inductively coupled plasma (ICP), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS). Their measurement results confirms the chemisorption of sulfur ions and the formation of ZnS film on the smithsonite surface after Na2S treatment, however the influence of HS- ions on the surface and the influence of sulfidization on the amine adsorption have not been discussed."

The low-grade iron ore sample contains both lumps and fines. It is mostly hematitic iron ore and considerable amount of goethitic/limonitic material is present in it. The major impurities present were quartz and clay. It is observed that the iron bearing phases are poorly liberated above 300 µm and the liberation improves below 300 µm. More than 80% liberation is achieved below 106 µm. Based on the liberation data, the feed for the different beneficiation methods was prepared by stage crushed the ROM followed by grinding passing to 106µm and the ground material (-106µm) was deslimed. The underflow was subjected to various beneficiation techniques such as tabling, enhanced gravity separator (EGS), wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS), and flotation and the results are discussed. All the methods studied could able to produce pellet grade concentrate with iron content of 64.5%, however, a marginal higher yield was observed for WHIMS (81%). "Indian coal industry is the world's third largest in terms of production and fourth largest in terms of proven coal resources. Indian coal deposits are generally of high ash content varying from 24 to 50%. The coking coal reserves of India constitute about 12% of the total coal inventory, and the coals are washed in washeries, before being used for metallurgical purposes. The processes used for washing coking coal is Jigs, Heavy medium bath and Cyclones for the sizes upto 0.5mm, while the coal fines are washed in spirals and conventional flotation cells. Extensive studies were carried out for understanding the performance of an operating conventional flotation plant. The performance studies revealed that appreciable quantity of clean coal is being lost in the tailings due to varied reasons and the required quantity and quality was not achieved. In this study, laboratory Flotation experiments were carried out to examine the cleaning characteristics of the said tailing and to determine the effective process parameters for recovery of clean coal at desired ash level ( 16-17%). Response Surface Methodology was applied to investigate the operating conditions of the Froth Flotation for modeling and optimization. Primary study reflects that there is a possibility to recover clean coal at 16-17% ash level with a yield of about 60-70% from that Flotation tailing of feed ash about 28%.INTRODUCTIONMost of the Indian coking coals are difficult in cleaning characteristics and high ash content due to its drift origin and its age of formation for more than 225 million years. Indian coking coal reserve is limited about 12% of total coal reserve. The minerals are homogeneously mixed with the coal macerals. The open cast mining practice and mechanized mining methods are being adopted to meet the increasing demands of coals resulting in generation of more coal fines and subsequently the quality is deteriorated. Indian good quality coking coal reserves of higher seams are fast depleting and hence coking coals of difficult cleaning characteristics of lower seams (LVC) are being now explored. Due to increased mechanization of coal mines to cope up the increased demand and followed by size reduction of lower seam coals in search of better liberation , the coal fines are increasing by leaps and bounds. The processes used for washing coking coal is Jigs, Heavy medium bath and Cyclones for the sizes upto 0.5mm, while the coal fines are washed in spirals and conventional flotation cells."

In the present work, the flotation behaviours of zircon, rutile and ilmenite using sodium oleate as collector in absence and presence of depressants were thoroughly investigated. The maximum in the flotation recovery of any of the above minerals falls within similar pH ranges. A range of inorganic and polymer depressants were examined in order to improve the separation of zircon from rutile and ilmenite. Optimum values of conditioning pH and depressant concentration to achieve maximum recovery and best selective floatability of zircon were obtained. Selective flotation of zircon from Ti-bearing minerals was anticipated from single mineral experiments under different pH values, depressant and collector conditions.
