"Pre-concentration of precious metal and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, development and operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. The fluctuations in metal prices and currencies expose many mines to risks especially dealing with low and variable ore grades. Pre-concentration, the process of concentrating the valuable metal into a smaller mass yield, effectively results in the introduction of higher feed grades to milling circuits. Gangue rejection, the removal of lower S.G. waste rock from the circuit, not only results in higher downstream grades but also potentially removes harder, non-valuable mineral, providing significant power savings within the circuit. The pre-concentration or ‘gangue rejection’ process offers a number of benefits when considering the treatment of marginal ore deposits, especially if it can be performed at a coarse crush size; these benefits include a reduction of the operating costs and the feed of more metal units to the mill. Gekko Systems has effectively utilized the Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) to pre-concentrate the valuable metal, achieving high primary recoveries into a range of mass yields resulting in upgrade ratios between 2 and 10 times. This paper explores: the benefits of pre-concentrating ‘marginal’ ore deposits prior to the milling circuit; the selective rejection of ore types that may affect either the recovery or comminution process; and also looks into the potential to effectively reduce the ‘cut-off’ grade when considering the mine planning process. Case studies of projects using the IPJ to pre-concentrate and reject gangue are also included. Pre-concentration and gangue rejection provide the potential to develop marginal ore deposits, thus providing higher grades, less gangue and more metal at a lower operating cost to producers."

Surface organic microanalysis of platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd) minerals by TOF MS1 is an attractive complement and potential alternative to conventional collector screening methods. Its attractiveness lies on its ability to focus on individual Pt and Pd mineral particulates, therefore providing a more targeted approach. The only requirement is knowledge of the occurrence (mineral composition, grain size and association) of Pt/Pd in the feed sample. This newly developed technique can detect, and identify collectors and quantitate loadings on individual Pt/Pd mineral particulates at plant concentration levels. Using this technology, collector loadings were measured on Pt and Pd metal plates and on PtS2 and PdS particulates which had been exposed together to aqueous solutions of different collectors. Thus, data were obtained on collector selectivity, the effect of sulphur; and of depressants, the latter in combination with TOF-LIMS2 results. Staged rougher tests on North American and UG-2 ores linked Pt/Pd flotation kinetics with collector loadings and ultimately grade/recovery.

A study was conducted to elucidate the relationship between the hovering velocity and the particle settling velocity. The experiments were carried out in a water medium on five materials ranging in density from 1.070 to 4.000 kg/m3. Analysis of the results with allowance for the distribution of stream velocities over the cross section of the pipe revealed that the final settling velocity of the particles was equal to their local hovering velocity (on the stream axis), and not to the average velocity of vertical flow as is generally believed. It therefore follows that the kinetic structure of the stream must be taken into account when constructing theoretical models of the process for purposes of computation. In addition, the optimal stream velocity is not always equal to the hovering velocity and in fact is governed by other factors as well. Illustration is provided by the results of a study conducted in a vertical cascade classifier comprising eleven identical stages. The feed material was introduced at each stage successively beginning with the topmost (i* = 1 ) and ending with the lowermost (i* = 11). First, the stream velocity that yields optimum separation conditions at each stage of the cascade (i.e. k=50%, k being the yield of a given size class in the fines for a single stage) was sought. Subsequently the conditions of optimal separation for the instrument as a whole were determined (i.e. F(x) = 50%, F(x) being the yield of a given size class for the entire instrument). The results of the study are presented in the table.

"The investigation is dedicated to study of biohydrometallurgical processing of refractory gold-arsenic concentrate with the large content of pyrrhotite. Sulfide concentrate of chemical constituents: 75g/t Au, 4,7g/t Ag, 6,3% As, 29,3% S, 2,3% Sb, 0,5% ? (organic) and of mineral composition, %: 11,8 arsenopyrite, 39 pyrrhotite, 12 pyrite, 2,9 antimonite and the rest – aluminosilicates, carbonates and quartz, was studied. The recovery of gold from concentrate by cyanidation is 51,2%. The rest of gold is embedded as finegraded segregation in sulfides.Sulfide oxidation process study is described. Bacterial oxidation was executed on a pilot laboratory unit using combined autotrophic bacterium: A. thiooxidans , A. ferrooxidans, Leptospirillum ferrooxidans and sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidation, pH=1,5-2,2, t=28-32?C, oxidation time 120 hours. Pyrrhotite is the least stable sulfide mineral with electrode potential 0,45V versus arsenopyrite (0,55 V) and pyrite (0,55-0,6 V) and is oxidated primarily. Pyrrhotite oxidation is followed by large amount of elemental sulphur, which has a bad influence on cyanidation.It’s established that the rate of arsenopyrite (for the first 48 hours) from concentrate containing 39% pyrrhotite is 2-3 times as less as the rate of arsenopyrite bio-oxidation from concentrate without pyrrhotite. The arsenopyrite bio-oxidation is accelerated only after the elemental sulfur was oxidized by bacterium A. thiooxidans and elemental sulfur percentage was reduced from 6,8 to 3,9%. The bacterium concentration is increased from 2,5x107 to 2,5x109 cells/ml. Almost full oxidation of arsenopyrite (98%) and pyrrhotite (98- 99%) is finished in 120 hours. We have studied two pretreatment methods for elimination sulfur content influence on cyanidation: aeration in lime and electrochemical treatment. Such an operation enables to have supplemental oxidation of elemental sulfur and other oxygen and cyanide absorbants before cyanidation. After treatment the content of elemental sulfur was decreased from 3,9 to 2,2%, gold recovery from 90 to 96% and cyanide consumption from 16,2 to 7,2 kg/t decreases. The content of toxical rhodonite-ions in liquid phase of pulp and disinfection reagents consumption were decreased as result of elemental sulfur content in bio-oxidated product reduction."

The kaolin losses in hydrocyclone classification are determined by the fines, which are discharged together with the water to the underflow. This paper presents an improved technique of water injection to the conical part of the cyclone applied especially for small cyclones in kaolin preparation. In small hydrocyclones water, injection is a sensitive process. Therefore, the process was stabilized by controlled water injection dependent on the measurement of the underflow shape. Three applications of this innovation are presented. In the first case, the water injection is applied for the separation stage in dilute suspension where the final product is produced in the overflow of a 50mm hydrocyclone. The underflow contains sand and residual kaolin. For a higher kaolin recovery, the underflow is usually treated downstream in washing cyclones. The wash water injection results in a 45 ? 50% - reduction of the kaolin fraction <25µm in the underflow. Thus, water injection to the classifying cyclone leads to a separation comparable with a downstream washing stage. An additional hydrocyclone stage can be deleted. The second application refers to a classification in dense suspension. Here, the underflow of the last hydrocyclone stage was directed to a washing in a 50mm hydrocyclone. The additional injection of 3L/min water in to the conical part of the cyclone reduced the kaolin losses by half.The third application was executed in the washing stage equipped with 75mm hydrocyclones where the underflow is directed to flotation. "Estimated global solar energy demand in 2001 required approximately 5,500 tons of silicon feedstock. This required 65,000 tons of quartz. If the trend continues, the solar energy demand in 2010 would require approximately 30,000 tons of silicon feedstock and 350,000 tons of quartz, although the need for quartz probably will be lower than this due to higher solar cell efficiencies, larger and thinner wafers, more extensive recycling of waste material and new routes for the production of silicon feedstock. The raw material requirements for the production of metallurgical-grade silicon are most likely to change. This may favour increased beneficiation of primary raw materials in the future solar cell production chain.SOLAR CELL PRODUCTION CHAIN SCENARIOSThe major problem concerning solar cells is the production costs. Electricity produced from fossil fuels and hydropower plants are currently much cheaper than the electricity produced from solar cells. Also, limited availability of silicon feedstock for the production of crystalline silicon solar cells is considered a major threat to the further growth of the PV industry. The present route for solar silicon feedstock goes from quartz, through metallurgical-grade silicon (MG-Si) and to electronic-grade silicon (EG-Si). The reject from the EG-Si production are further processed into wafers and solar cells. This situation is not satisfying, however, because it has created a silicon feedstock shortage and a PV energy price that is not competitive in a large scale.Crystalline silicon solar cells are the most important solar cells manufactured today. This will most probably remain the situation the next decade. Also, the future silicon ""feedstock"" is most likely not reject from the production of electronic-grade silicon, as it is today. There will probably be a more direct solargrade silicon route, excluding the very expensive electronic-grade silicon ""detour"". Quartzite has been regarded as the most suitable primary raw material used in the silicon solar cell production chain. This may change as the raw material requirements for the production of metallurgical-grade silicon are most likely to change. In addition, quartz or other silica-containing minerals from other rocks may be of a higher purity or contain lesser amounts of the most harmful elements. This favours increased beneficiation of primary raw materials in the future solar silicon feedstock production chain"

"Despite the lip service that has been paid to pro-active plant maintenance processes over recent years, a significant portion of maintenance in industry is still reactive. The business driving force to prevent expensive production opportunity costs arising from “break-down maintenance” is obvious. Various benefits can be derived from successfully deploying remote equipment diagnosis technology and associated business processes.From an end-client’s viewpoint these include the ability to predict and take actions to prevent equipment breakdowns, increasing the lifetime of equipment by responding to appropriate operating instructions and therefore improving the return on capital expenditure. Better planning and scheduling of maintenance priorities and resources with performance measures like an Equipment Health Index are also possible. The knowledge that a qualified supplier engineer is constantly in touch with the operating conditions of their equipment, albeit remotely, is more than a comfort, and can be translated into quantifiable cost savings and improved supplier service levels."

"The cyclone would have a claim to be the commonest, least understood and most abused piece of mineral processing equipment available for study by researchers. It has certainly generated its fair share of publications – 1,000 in the last 60 years would be a fair estimate. However this remarkable degree of interest and scale of investigation is not reflected in our understanding of how they work; cyclones are still installed inappropriately and run poorly, which suggests that there are still things to learn about this deceptively simple process.In mineral processing there are two broad classes of cyclone: the hydrocyclone, used in classification, thickening and dewatering, and the dense medium cyclone, used for concentration by density. Although rarely studied together, the laws of physics presumably apply equally to both and so it seems that there would be interesting things to learn by considering them as a single class of device. The good news is that in recent years there have been spectacular advances in the computational and measurement tools available to study these devices, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD), tomography, and laser doppler anemometry (LDA), and some good progress has been made in an understanding of the fundamental principles involved.The JKMRC has made many experimental studies of hydrocyclones and DM cyclones, leading to useful empirical models. However some recent CFD and tomographic work, in association with work of other institutions, has thrown important light on the workings of these processes. Progress has also been made in novel designs of cyclone to achieve improved separating efficiency, based on an attack on the subprocesses believed to contribute to inefficient operation. This paper describes the work to date.Modelling of the dense medium and classifying cyclone was conducted using the Fluent computational fluid dynamics code. Three phase simulations of the dense medium application (air/water/medium) showed appropriate medium segregation effects but over-predicted the level of segregation compared to segregation measured by gamma-ray tomography. This is believed to be because the basic Algebraic Slip mixture model in Fluent does not model any back-mixing of the dispersed phase due to turbulence."

"Preliminary tests were done to determine whether comminution by electric-pulse disaggregation, or EPD (cf. Rudashevsky et al; 1995), was more effective than using conventional crushing for Merensky Reef ore. A hand sample of the Merensky Reef was sawn in two: then one sub-sample was comminuted to – 2 mm using E-PD at the University of Minnesota, and the other sub-sample was crushed to –2 mm using a conventional jaw crusher at CANMET.The products of the electric-pulse disaggregation and jaw crusher were fractionated by sieving and by a separation using a heavy liquid with a specific gravity of 3.3, because the proportion of platinum-group minerals (PGM) and sulphides to silicate minerals is very low. Thus, four mineral separates were produced: –2000 + 833 µm, -833 +208 µm, -208-µm float and -208-µm sink. All the mineral separates were studied by image analysis (Lastra et al; 1998). The main objective was to determine the liberation of gangue (silicate minerals), chromite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, pentlandite and PGM. In the case of the PGM, a specific image analysis program was written to search and measure these minerals."

"Flotation is a complex process with many factors that influence the performance of a cell. This paper examines the impact of several key variables on the performance of flotation cells. The study makes use of a simulator for the froth phase of the flotation vessel, as the main purpose of this study is to separate the impact of different variables from one another.In experiments it is very difficult to separate the effect of variables from one another as a change in a singe input parameter, such as air rate, invariably also affects many of the other key variables, such as bubble size and bubble bursting rates. This interaction between variables makes it very hard to experimentally separate the impact of, for instance, the air rate from that of bubble size or bursting rate. In the simulator, though, it easy to make independent changes to these variables.In order to achieve this a base case simulation that is typical of many of the rougher cells found in sulphide flotation circuits was carried out. Four key variables, air rate, incoming bubble size, surface bubble size and the fraction of the bubbles flowing out of the cell unburst, were varied in order to obtain the system’s response.The most significant results were obtained when the bubble size was varied. An increase in the incoming bubble size has the effect of reducing the pulp zone recovery, but increases the froth zone recovery. If it were possible to vary the incoming bubble size without influencing the overflowing bubble size, the impact of the change would be unclear because of these two competing effects. The effect of a change in the overflowing bubble size has an opposite effect on the froth recovery, with larger bubbles resulting in lower froth recoveries."

There is one large-scaled iron ore deposit in Inner Mongolia of China, but it is very complex which includes about 170 types of minerals and 71 elements. The hematite, magnetite are mainly iron ores. It is difficult that the iron mineral can be separated efficiently by common dressing methods due to the complexity, and the iron concentrates in the mineral processing factory contains many foreign substance such as K, Na and Si so that the process in iron mill is influenced because of the foreign substance, so it is vital reducing the foreign substance.

"In water treatment, flocculation or coagulation with aluminium or ferric salts has been widely used for many years to remove natural organic matter (NOM), including humic acids. However, the adsorption of NOM to aluminium hydroxide flocs during conventional coagulation/flocculation processes is very complex, with the flocculation of aluminium hydroxide particles and the adsorption of NOM molecules on flocs occurring simultaneously. Any effect on the surface characteristics and micro-structures of the humic acids and aluminium hydroxides could affect the adsorption efficiency.It has been widely observed that if a reaction system (liquid-liquid or liquid-solid) is exposed to an ultrasound field, under appropriate conditions, a variety of physical (emulsification, aggregation/flocculation) or chemical (the production of radical and exited species; single electrotransfer) actions may be activated. Though the ultrasound effects have been used in biological and chemical decontamination in many conventional environmental protection practices, the idea to explore the ultrasound effects in the removal of humic acids by preformed aluminium hydroxide flocs is relatively new. In this paper, the effect of an in-situ ultrasonication on removal of the humic acids extracted from the acidification fermentation of lignocellulosic residues, by a preformed aluminium hydroxide, was evaluated; the effect of ultrasonication on the surface complexation of the humic acids with the preformed aluminium hydroxides was investigated."

"The evaluation of health hazards within the treatment of mineral and waste materials is gaining more and more importance in industrial countries. The need to control occupational safety has been recognised, and regulations which describe general protective measurements for personnel provide a tool to protect their health. It is the aim of the paper to give an outlook for practical approaches to risk assessment and to present measures for exposure reduction in accordance with the state of the art in Germany.Both the treatment of minerals and of waste materials are described in relation to the risk assessment. The method of evaluating health hazards in the two industries is similar and therefore both examples are presented next to each other.The example presented in the paper is the German “Biostoffverordnung” (the regulation for biological materials) which is important for the waste treatment industry. All kinds of waste treatment facilities (like composting facilities, waste dumps, sorting facilities for packaging materials) are obliged to carry out an assessment of health hazards for a variety of working areas and working places. The possible safety requirements deriving from this regulation are presented and discussed under the aspect of biological hazards.All over the world each country has different guidelines and regulations but all have one target in common – to protect the employees. "To remain competitive in an open market, mining companies are more and more requested to optimise their complex and highly multivariate processes. The increasing amount of process data, brought about by intensive use of instrumentation and the progress in computer data acquisition, enhances the need for more and more powerful and robust tools for the analysis and modelling of the process data. Now, with the emergence of multivariate data analysis (MDA) techniques, on-line clustering of mineral process behaviour is possible and could help in the extraction of valuable process operation indicators. MDA can be used in different mineral processes such as flotation, grinding, smelting etc. In this paper, the focus will be on grinding process as it is the one of the most costly node in the mineral processing scheme (i.e. power consuming) and it is a highly multivariable process. Particularly for primary grinding mills (SAG/AG), more instrumentation outputs and more powerful and significant process indicators are needed for efficient control and optimisation.MDA is a novel approach suitable for understanding mineral process behaviour compared to the traditionally approaches based on empirical and phenomenological modelling. Multivariate techniques can be used for several purposes. In the process of thickening dewatering_the motion state of two- phase flow in a thickener has a very great influence on thickening efficiency. The investigation was made using copper mill tailings. In this investigation the authors explored the formation conditions and motion range of density current in the thickening process by model experiments, and analyzed the influence of density current on thickening efficiency. The results have shown that the formation of density current has relations with the structure parameters of a thickener and thickening process. The density current and its forming location affect thickener’s working efficiency. The author measured the motion state of two- phase flow in a 53-m dial. thickener for copper mill tailings under its operation conditions and analyzed the density distribution and motion state of two-phase flow in the thickener. The results obtained by the industry tests have shown that the motion state of two- phase flow in the thickener can be greatly improved by modification of its structure, achieving a great improvement in its thickening efficiency. It is concluded that, a thickener’s working efficiency depends on the formation and motion range of density current in it, which is of great importance to designing and establishment of thickener’s working parameters.

"Rare Earth water dregs is the drained waste dregs, which contains over 0.2 percent thorium dioxide and about 6-10 percent di-Rare Earth trioxide, which is beyond the standard of draining off that China governments set, so that the Rare Earth water leach dregs must be sacked and laid down in storehouse, which costs lots of money. It is a pity that the RE and thorium compounds very useful elements in industry are discarded. A lot of work must be carried out so that this resource was fully developed.In this paper, four separation techniques of recovery Rare Earth minerals and enrichment thorium element and reduction thorium content of drained dreg for the different test samples of Rare Earth water leach dregs which is radioactive waste dregs got from diverse locus are studied, respectively, and the separation characteristic and the separation process are described, using several combination processes of classification and gravity and flotation separation which were prepared according to the characteristic of test samples and technology. The test results show that the combination processes are the more remarkable separation techniques and the flotation reagents used in test can be applied to utilizing synthetically radioactive waste dregs. Through the combined technique process, three parts of products were obtained, namely, Rare Earth concentrate collected, the thorium product enriched and a large amount of the waste dregs product that can be directly drained and the total quantity is 50%-60%. In order to determine optimum technical condition, the effect factors of separation process were investigated in the test."

Opportunities to promote enhanced eco-efficiency (i.e. the simultaneous improvement in economic and environmental performance) for the minerals industry exist across the whole value chain. However, given the current operational models of major companies within the industry, and their focus on refining of primary ore bodies, it is important to understand where such opportunities might lie within minerals beneficiation, as it is here that major environmental pressures are felt. This paper examines the combination of unit technologies in a minerals beneficiation train, and explores the inter-relationship between energy input and water consumption for a given mineralogy and product recovery, as these are two critical environmental issues which affect the overall viability of many minerals plants. In particular, we review constitutive relationships for each of the sub-processes of comminution, flotation, and tailings dewatering, and suggest how these might be integrated into a unified hybrid model, with particle size distribution as the key design variable. Such a model can then be used to explore the trade-offs between different performance objectives (be these technical, economic or environmental) as part of a multiple-objectives optimisation exercise. In this way, it may become practical to envision situations in which concentrate grade and recovery are sacrificed, marginally, in order to reduce energy demand in comminution, and improve overall water recovery. In addition, this work provides a useful baseline against which to analyse the potential for dry processing. This becomes more relevant as the industry commits to advancing the sustainable development agenda in the face of the increasing life -cycle costs and impacts of minerals processing operations, coupled to declining ore body grades, and the desire to maximise recovery of minor and trace elements. Some specific observations for copper are offered, supported by operational data from Zambian copper mines.

"PROCESS COMPLEXITYDespite many years of research and development, mineral and metallurgical processes are in general highly complex and still difficult to understand and control. One of the biggest factors contributing to this complexity is the highly non-linear, multivariate, chaotic nature of such processes.This complexity is magnified in production environments where business optimisation rather than beneficiation is the primary objective. Return on investment, sustainability, and social issues such as Aids and the environment all form part of the goal hierarchy of industrial concerns. In addition, international competition and price volatility all have a huge impact on these processes in terms of operational constraints.Therefore the optimisation and control of beneficiation processes must take into account many factors other than pure process variables such as flow rates and levels. For example, commodity prices and client requirements all need to be added to the control problem, which together with incomplete process knowledge and non-linearities etc., make automation and optimisation extremely difficult.The ideal solution is to have a controller which in addition to performing full non-linear constrained optimal control can at the same time take into account other non-process factors such as price and client satisfaction."

"Italy is one of the major producers of ceramics in the world. Ceramic production requires large quantities of K-feldspar, which is commonly sourced from granites, alkali-granites, and “granitic” sands. These rocks contain other minerals, such as quartz, plagioclase and mafic minerals, which are undesirable for ceramic production. Due to the coarse mineral grains that constitute these rocks, a reasonable liberation is achieved at a relatively coarse grind size.This paper reports a study conducted on the separation of K-feldspar from quartz, plagioclase and biotite, from a feed of ground granite. The feasibility of the separation using a dynamic dense medium separation system has been investigated, as an alternative to the traditional flotation technique. The use of a two stages cylindrical vessel (Tri-Flo) was preferred to a conical vessel, due to the improved separation efficiency. Tests were conducted on two samples of crushed granite having size distributions of –3 +1 mm and –1 +0.5 mm.Heavy liquid analysis was performed on the two samples. As the rheological properties of the dense medium interact with the separation efficiency, the stability and viscosity of the dense medium were controlled and kept within an appropriate range; which was achieved with the addition of an artificial contaminant (clay) to the dense medium."

"There has been a significant research interest in the stability of single thin films, including prediction of their failure based on disjoining pressure and film thickness experiments and DLVO theory. It is, however, notoriously difficult to correlate information on the failure of a single thin film with measurements of foam stability. This is particularly true for the prediction of dynamic foam stability indicators, such as equilibrium froth height and surface bubble size.An alternative experimental approach to studying single thin film failure for predicting foam stability is to measure directly the coalescence probability between two approaching bubbles in a surfactant solution. These experiments can be performed under different chemical and physical conditions by using a micromanipulator that allows variation of bubble size, surfactant concentration, approach velocity and stationary position. The interface radius of curvature, the time to coalescence and the film area between the bubbles can be measured directly using image analysis.In a foam, the force exerted on the thin film separating two bubbles depends on the local radius of curvature of the Plateau borders and vertices, which depends in turn on the local liquid content. Results from different bubble sizes in the micromanipulator therefore translate into regions of different liquid content in the foam. Small bubbles, having a high radius of curvature correspond to the low-liquid content (Polyhederschaum) region higher in the foam, and large bubbles to the wetter (Kugelschaum) region closer to the liquid-foam interface. Experiments with different holding distances between the bubbles correspond to differences in bubble size in the foam, as the size of the film between the bubbles varies."
