Rare earth elements (REEs) become increasingly significant for renewable energy devices and high-technology electronic products because of their large-scale popularity and applications. In this project, a field-emission scanning electron microscope was used to characterize the composition and distribution of REEs-bearing minerals. X-ray elemental maps were acquired with a large area x-ray detector (60 and 80 mm2 collecting area) and annular detector (60 mm2 collecting area), which allow fast x-ray acquisition at high count rate. These elemental maps were transformed into phase maps, which are used to identify the composition of the mineral phases and the REEs distribution over a large area. The phase maps are an easy way to distinguish the phases with and without REEs and compare the efficiency of different REEs extraction processes. Different methods (manual and automatic) for producing phase map were studied by comparing the distribution of REEs obtained from the same area.

"This paper compares several distinct types of mineral deposits associated with different families of granitoid rocks in the New Brunswick Appalachians. Porphyry copper deposit s are associated with late-stage differentiates of Lower to Middle Devonian I-type igneous complexes. Contact metasomatic deposits were formed where these plutons intrude carbonate rocks and they gave rise to vein deposits in fracture zones near wrench faults. The I-type granitoids were emplaced mainly in areas of thin continental crust and locally along prominent faults in areas of thick continental crust.In contrast, tin-tungsten-molybdenum-bearing greisen deposits and skarns, and antimony-bearing quartz veins are associated with predominantly S-stype granitoid complexes ranging in age from Middle Devonian to early Carboniferous. The mineral deposits occur within or along the contacts of very fractionated (specialized) late phases of these intrusive complexes, which are characterized by high K2O/Na2O, Rb/Sr and Rb/Ba, and low Fe, Mg, Zr and Ti contents. These specialized granitoids are in a large wrench fault zone that cuts across thick continental crust in southwestern and central New Brunswick.IntroductionA great variety of igneous intrusions and subvolcanic stocks were emplaced in the New Brunswick Appalachians during the latter stages of and immediately after the Acadian Orogeny (late Lower to Middle Devonian) and during the subsequent Hercynian Orogeny (Carboniferous). The presence or absence and characteristics of mineral deposits associated with these intrusions reflect the level of intrusion, the composition of the associated igneous rocks and the composition of the invaded sequences.Nickel-copper sulphide deposits occur in mafic intrusions in the St. Stephen area of the southwestern Magaguadavic - St. Croix Zone and in the Goodwin Lake area of the northeastern Mirarnichi Zone. Contact metasomatic and vein-type copper-rich base metal sulphide deposits and porphyry copper deposits with or without molybdenum are related mainly to high-level granitoid stocks of intermediate composition in the Matapedia-Tobique and northwest Miramichi zones. Tintungsten - molybdenum deposits with or without base metal sulphide minerals and antimony-uranium deposits are mainly associated with Upper Devonian and Lower Carboniferous biotite-muscovite granites and related 'subvolcanic intrusions that occur in an arc-shaped belt extending from the southwestern Magagaudavic - St. Croix Zone into the central Mirarnichi Zone."

Dofasco is Canada?s 2nd largest steel manufacturer producing 4.5 million tons of flat rolled steel per year. They have revenues of over $3 billion and employ 7,000 people in their Hamilton, ON plant. Dofasco is North America?s most profitable steel producer and were recently ranked as the #1 steel maker in the world by Dow Jones. Motivation to Improve In the 1980?s the steel business was good. However, in the late 80?s and early 90?s things began to change. Globalization was beginning to influence the market, imports started arriving at lower prices and higher quality, hangover from the 1970?s inflation saw costs rising and prices dropping, there was a shift from a sellers to a buyers market, and shareholder returns were beginning to erode. Dofasco took a step back and evaluated their maintenance performance and found that they were operating in an environment where 70% of their work was reactive and only 30% was proactive. They also found that the rate of product quality improvement was flat and their average equipment availability was only 78%. At that point they realized that Equipment Reliability was key to improving product quality, production output, costs and shareholder return. They initiated a project to research, develop, and implement the most advanced maintenance practices and information technologies to achieve maximum equipment reliability.

Current trend of the global flow of strategic metals are analyzed to discuss the strategy of the development of recycling technology and alternative technology. In many cases, each global flow of metal is changing from the trilateral structure of U.S., EU and Japan in the later 20th century into the convergence to China as the factory of the world. Scrap flows are also changing dynamically. A long term change of prices of metal has gotten changed since the entrance of this century. The estimation of metal consumption up to 2050, in which the author estimated that many kinds of metal will overshoot the reserve base line, is revised considering these change of current trends.

Mine haulage drifts are the primary access to the mining blocks of an orebody in a multilevel mining system of a tabular ore deposit. The stability and functionality of haulage drifts are thus crucial to the success of a mining operation. Drift instability could lead to serious consequences such as injuries, production delays and higher operational cost. In this paper, the performance of the haulage drift stability is evaluated on the basis of the primary rock support system comprising 1.8 m resin grouted rebars in the drift walls and 2.1 m long bolt in the back. Two failure criteria namely the extent of Mohr-Coulomb yield zones around the drift, and linear elastic brittle shear failure are adopted and compared, with respect to lower level and same-level mining and filling sequence in the vicinity of the haulage drift. The case study is one of the #1 Shear East zone of the Garson Mine in Sudbury, Ontario. Random Monte Carlo (RMC) technique, which has been previously established to assess the haulage drift stability, is employed in this investigation. The RMC technique is used in conjunction with finite difference modelling software FLAC for random assignment of model input parameters in the FLAC grid. Deterministic model results reveal the drift behaviour in terms of deformation (convergence) and mining-induced stress distribution. Comparison between the two different criteria is carried out to determine which method is most suitable in evaluating unsatisfactory drift performance. The results are presented in terms of probability of instability and categorized with respect to failure condition and mining step. It is shown that the brittle shear failure condition based on linear elastic response calls for enhanced support system at a later mining step than what Mohr- Coulomb yielding condition does. The paper presents a detailed discussion of the stochastic analysis results.

"A buffer’s ability to dampen production variations is directly related to its size. Small buffers cannot handle large variations in production, resulting in production losses when their inventory is depleted or saturated. This paper presents a predictive control algorithm used to regulate the inventory in a buffer of limited size, subject to large production variations caused by an upstream batch process. The algorithm was designed to manage the acid flow rates in an acid regeneration process, servicing batch leach reactors at Rio Tinto Fer et Titane, in Sorel-Tracy, Québec. The objective was to increase production by reducing equipment downtime caused by imbalances in the acid tanks servicing the leach reactors. The controller attempts to maintain acceptable acid tank volumes by optimizing the leach reactors acid/slag ratio and reaction time as a function of anticipated acid needs, all while maintaining product quality.INTRODUCTION Some beneficiation processes in extractive metallurgy require processing bulk material in batches. Typical examples of metallurgical beneficiation batch processes are smelting, leaching, electrowinning, elution and carbon-in-pulp. These processes are often situated midstream in an ore beneficiation flow sheet and either receive or transfer ore to continuous processes. Batch processes, by their very nature, introduce large variability in the flow sheet, because they process large finite quantities of material at nearly periodic time intervals. In order to dampen variations in production, various buffers–tanks and stockpiles–are utilized to accumulate ore upstream and downstream of batch processes. A buffer’s ability to dampen production variations is directly related to its size (Phillis & Gumede, 2011). Small buffers cannot handle large production variations, resulting in equipment downtime when their inventory is depleted or saturated (Everett, 2010, Berton et al., 2013). Consequently, the batch equipment production rates must be adequately managed to minimize production losses, attributed to depleted or saturated inventories, while maintaining product quality. Algorithms that anticipate or predict future production variations are often utilized to regulate buffer inventories, subject to large flow rate variations (Salvo et al., 2002; Bonvin, 2013). This paper presents a predictive control algorithm used to maintain an acceptable volume in a spent acid tank servicing several batch leach reactors. The algorithm is implemented at the acid leach plant of Rio Tinto Fer et Titane, in Sorel-Tracy, Québec."

"This paper covers the new six-strand curved-mould billet casting machine at the Contrecoeur Works of SidbecDosco. It commenced production of 3 Yz-in. square billets at the beginning of January 1972. Together with two 100- ton ultra-high-power electric furnaces in a new meltshop, it is the principal source of billets for the existing rod and bar mill also located at Contrecoeur. The paper develops the reasoning for casting-to-size 3Y2 -in. billets and for choosing a six-strand machine. It indicates the significance of Sidbec-Dosco Montreal Works' extensive experience in operating a four-strand curvedmould billet machine since 1965 and the ways in which this experience influenced the design and operation of the new caster. Machine features are described in detail, as are the reasons for some of the features. The installation, checkout and crew training are briefly discussed as well as the tundish teeming trials. The first cast on January 5, 1972, is covered and a log is shown of the first casts to an empty ladle. There are operating statistics covering the first 100 casts, which produced 8000 tons of good billets in ten weeks of operation. Machine performance and billet quality were good and the few minor problems encountered are described."

Abstract -The Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag ore deposits of the Boundary and N-5 zones near Bathurst, New Brunswick, occur in a polydeformed volcano-sedimentary sequence that is part of the Ordovician Tetagouche Group. Massive and disseminated sulfides are hosted by an argillaceous to cherty sedimentary sequence that is stratigraphically underlain by a siliceous fragmental unit and is overlain by a feldspar-rich crystal tuff and related tuffaceous rocks. The deposits have a low iron sulfide con­ tent relative to that of most stratabound sulfide deposits of the Bathurst-Newcastle mining district. The ore is commonly associated with chlorite- and talc-rich sediments. The N-5 deposit is considered to be the fault-displaced extension of the Boundary deposit. The Boundary deposit is estimated to contain 891 000 t grading 3.310Jo Pb, 7.96% Zn, 0.32% Cu and 44 g/t Ag; the estimate for the N-5 zone is 330 000 t grading 3.24% Pb, 7.15% Zn, 0.33% Cu, and 37 g/t Ag. The ore is processed at 1000 tpd at the Heath Steele mill.

"Commissioning of a circulating dry scrubber plant was recently completed at an existing facility, in order to treat the sulphur dioxide off-gas emitted from rotary kilns. Proper planning of the different commissioning stages and staffing an integrated team are the most important factors required for a successful plant start-up. A strong operational readiness plan must be in place as early as the start of construction in order to ensure a smooth transition from commissioning to operations. Plant performance can meet or exceed performance criteria within the required timeframe if the proper group dynamic and good communication is established between construction, commissioning and operations teams.INTRODUCTIONCommissioning of a circulating dry scrubber (CDS) plant was recently completed at an existing facility in Quebec, Canada. The CDS plant treats the sulphur dioxide off-gas emitted from rotary kilns in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements. This installation enables the existing facility to reduce their sulphur emissions by over 90%.The CDS ProcessA general overview of the CDS process is presented in Figure 1 below. The combined, de-dusted off-gas from multiple kilns is sent to the CDS, which acts as an entrained fluid bed, where the gas is contacted with a water mist, re-circulated solids and hydrated lime. The SO2 from the gas stream and the available calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) from the hydrated lime dissolve in the water and react to ultimately form calcium sulphites and gypsum. The solid residue (referred to as CDS residue), is the primary byproductof the process.Fresh hydrated lime and CDS residue is captured by the dust collection system and is re-circulated to the CDS via a fluidised transport system. Clean off-gas passes through the dust-collection system and is then sent to the atmosphere by a single exhaust fan.The CDS residue purged from the system is combined with the dust collected from the kiln offgas system and this mixture is wetted in the already exiting agglomeration system, to minimize dust generation during handling, and then sent to disposal."

"In certain instances, rocks around underground excavations behave as a plastic mass. This paper offers several solutions to predicting the mode of plastic flow around cavities and designing mining pillars where plastic conditions exist.IntroductionWhen stresses around underground cavities exceed yield limits of the host rock, the material often behaves as a plastic mass. The best example of this phenomenon is the behaviour of salt rocks in deep salt and potash deposits (more than 500 m deep).However, many other soft rocks exhibit similar properties. For example, Jeremic(1) described certain types of coal yielding plastically under high pressure. Alder suggested that granulated rock behaves plastically.The object of this paper is to propose a de sign procedure for mining pillars exhibiting plastic flow due to the combination of rock properties and in-situ stresses.Prandtl(3) mathematically defined a concept of a generalized, perfectly plastic substance, not possessing the property of strain hardening (Fig. I). "I wish to thank you and your organizers for inviting me to address you at this point in time when we are all concerned for the future of the mineral industry in Canada.My topic ""Some Initiatives of Government Assistance to Industry Applicable to Mineral Processing"" is purposely limited in scope. To cover the entire range of initiatives in detail would take me all day, and at best, would be a mere recital of program titles, and a one sentence summary of the contents of the program. As you know, OREE or Regional Economic Expansion, is in the process of being amalgamated with elements of the Department of Industry, Trade and Commerce. We will become Regional Industrial Expansion or ORIE. If the name Canada Dry becomes popular, I don't think we will object as we hope to become a good mixer. The entire departmental thrust has been re-evaluated, and is in the process of being re-constituted to better serve the nation, and industry as a whole. Amalgamation of the industrial, trade promotion and marketing support skills of IT&C, with the regional development orientation and decentralization program delivery mechanisms of DREE, will, it is believed, provide better support to industry on a national and regional basis."

The fair market value of an exploration property is determined by its potential to host a mineral deposit. This potential is gauged by the results of previous exploration, exploration stage, meaningful past expenditures and remaining targets that are not yet tested. Values of exploration properties can be viewed as distinct points in a three-dimensional space defined by orthogonal axes, namely: Exploration Stage (x-axis); Cumulative Expenditures (y-axis); and Property Value (z-axis). In general, these values are estimated by applying activity factors on previous exploration expenditures, e.g. an activity factor of 100% for an active property with good potential and a factor of 50% for an active property but past expenditures have not upgraded the property. At certain periods, a market factor may also be applied to reflect the activity of mineral property acquisitions. For properties that do not exhibit any exploration potential, only nominal values are applied.

"Economics of wear in mining industry and methods by which wear cost may be reduced will be discussed.IntroductionCanada loses more than $5 billion annually due to friction and wear (Table 1). It is estimated that about $1.3 billion, or about 25% of the losses, could be saved through better application of existing technology (Table 2). It should be noted that the costs given in Table 1 and 2 refer to 1986. The losses due to friction and wear and the savings would be much higher in 1996. Tribology combines the many branches and specialties in science and technology concerned with understanding and combatting friction and wear. Specifically, tribology is concerned with the design and manufacture of sliding and rolling bearings, piston rings, gears, cutting tools and other devices in which surfaces interact, in sliding or other relative motion. Tribology is concerned with the correct use of materials for interacting solid surfaces, with the interaction of the surfaces with the lubricants, with the chemistry, physics and use of lubricants. It is concerned with the reduction of friction and wear and the avoidance of associated failures in machinery. Similar tribological components such as bearings are used in different technologies and similar tribological problems such as abrasive wear occur in different industries. Thus, tribology is in itself a generic science and technology, concerned with the generation and dissemination of knowledge on friction, wear and lubrication, and the application of the knowledge, to a wide range of industrial products and equipment, from ploughs to space equipment, from prosthesis to engines, from washing machines to railways, from computers to power stations, from paper mills to mines. "Force analysis on weakly-magnetic particles and non-magnetic particles in magnetic field are presented, using a kind of permanent magnetic drum magnetic separator, which is designed with strong specific magnetic force and open magnetic system. Its surface peak intensity reaches to 1.0T, and the distribution density of capture line is 1.25×103/dm2. Qualitative analysis on the particles including its magnetic property, particle size, motion speed, magnetic field intensity, etc. is also presented to calculate the separating parameters for the drum separator. Experiment was conducted for the separation of fine weakly magnetic minerals for example ilmenite. The practicability to separate the minerals using separator designed with open magnetic system has been proved, providing an economic way for efficient separation of micro-fine weakly magnetic minerals and upgrading of non-metallic minerals. INTRODUCTIONMagnetic separation is a mineral processing method based on the differences of magnetic properties between minerals in inhomogeneous magnetic field (Sun, 2007). Currently for separation of micro-disseminated weakly magnetic iron ore, electromagnetic high intensity magnetic separators with closed structure of magnet system are often used. And for the separation of strongly magnetic minerals such as magnetite, low intensity drum magnetic separators with open magnet system are often used. In order to lower the operation costs and improve energy efficiency, it is important to develop efficient high intensity permanent magnetic separator with open magnet system, to some extent replacing high intensity electromagnetic separator.Oberteuffer (1974) discussed the magnetic force and competing forces in magnetic separators which compete with the magnetic forces and act on all of the particles which travel through the separator are those of gravity, hydrodynamic drag, fraction, and inertia in magnetic separation."

Since the time when Canada's East and West were joined by the railway, and communication was established into the interior, settlements grew on the southern fringe of the great Precambrian area that formed the northern protaxis of the continent during its vicissitudes of growth. They clung precariously to the fringe of that ancient land, for the Precambrian is not generous to those who wish to live by the fruits of the soil, except in those limited areas where the Pleistocene ice-sheet has been profuse in its gifts of clay to cover the hard surface of the Precambrian rock. Later settlements spread westwards over the expanse of Cretacean plains that now form the wheatfields of the Canadian West; but there still remained in northern and western Ontario, in eastern and northern Manitoba, a pioneer race, to whom agriculture had attractions only in so far that it provided the wherewithal to lay siege to the riches of the Precambrian. And they had a vision beyond their time. More than they knew, they had seized the fact that for the complete rounding out of Canadian national life, a8 well as for the establishing of the necessary contributions towards the economic stability of Canada and its provinces, an industry in mining sh01.dd be well and truly built in the hinterland of the central provinces. Failing the winning of mineral from the rocks, and timber from the forests, there would remain between the East and the West an enormous barrier of unproductive country which would not only be an incubus to the agricultural people in their struggle for economic liberty, but would effectively, and for all time, remain an un-populated void across which the aspirations of East and West would be unable to unite.

"In 2005, after nearly a decade of process development and feasibility work, the commercialization of the Falconbridge Nickel Smelting Technology (NST) began in earnest with the design and construction of a grassroots ferronickel plant at Koniambo Nickel in New Caledonia. The NST process was developed as an alternative to the conventional Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace (RKEF) process for production of ferronickel from saprolitic nickel laterite ores. The NST process promised environmental and energy efficiency advantages over the conventional route. A key step of the NST process involves fluidized bed pre-reduction of calcined laterite ore using direct injection of pulverized coal as the reductant. Two parallel fluidized bed reduction roasters (FBRs) were installed at Koniambo Nickel, each designed for a maximum capacity of 4,200 MTPD of calcined nickel laterite ore. This paper describes the process development and scale-up of the fluidized bed pre-reduction process, the design challenges associated with the prototype commercial units, and the current status of the FBR operation at Konaimbo.INTRODUCTION In the mid-1990s, Falconbridge began to develop a new flowsheet for production of ferronickel from nickel laterite ores. The process that developed came to be known as the Falconbridge Nickel Smelting Technology (NST). The flowsheet, which is particularly appropriate for saprolitic ores, involves several major unit operations, including: drying in a hammer mill-flash dryer, calcination and preheating in a flash calciner, pre-reduction in a fluidized bed reactor, and smelting in a DC arc furnace to produce the ferronickel product. This paper focuses on the fluidized bed pre-reduction step of the process and provides an overview of the process chemistry, laboratory and pilot plant development work, scale-up and commercialization of the pre-reduction step, and the results obtained in the prototype commercial units."

"Although many factors play roles in the estimation of recoverable reserves, smoothing effect and conditional bias are considered major geostatistical issues in the estimation. This paper introduces measures for smoothing effect and conditional bias, and provides insights into their relation to the estimation of recoverable reserves. Both smoothing effect and conditional bias are intrinsic to the information effect and kriging estimators. For a given level of drilling information, however, it is possible to identify the optimal search radius that minimizes conditional bias. Furthermore, it is also feasible to define variance correction factor for reduction of the smoothing effect from exploration block models. Both of these components are key to the accurate estimation of recoverable reserves. IntroductionThe accurate estimation of recoverable reserves is critical to decision making in different phases of feasibility study and mine planning. Much attention for improving the methodology of estimation has been focussed on the effect of the change-of-support (Parker, 1980; Dagdelen, 1996). For example, it is essential to make a volume- variance correction to the estimate of multiple indicator kriging (Hoerger, 1992). When the size of block, b, in the geostatistical model differs from that of selective mining unit (SMU), v, a volume-variance correction is warranted for the prediction of recoverable reserves.Most mining plans and decisions are made prior to the availability of high density blast-hole samples. In most mining operations, the true SMU grade Zv is unknown at the time of selection. Instead, the selection is based on the estimate Z v**derived from high density blast-hole samples within the deposit G. Nevertheless, the estimate Z v * of recoverable reserves in the stage of mine planning is derived from exploration data. At the end, the production result must be reconciled to the estimate Z v * . In other words, the selection is based on Z v** from blast-hole samples, while the final production figures are reconciled to Z v * from exploration drilling. For a given preselected cutoff grade z0, the actual mining panels will consist of the units having the estimated grade Z v** =z0 rather than the true grade Zv =z0. The difference between Z v** and Zv is usually of less concern."
