"A support system for large ground convergence conditions or burst-prone ground must contain holding elements (rockbolts, cable bolts, etc.) that are strong yet capable of sustaining large deformations, i.e., they must absorb as much energy as possible. Steel wire rope anchored in a borehole by a friction bolt provides these desired yield characteristics if the frictional anchorage is placed deep enough into the rockmass, i.e., in non-yielding rock or beyond the expected depth of rock ejected during a rockburst. Pull-out tests were conducted on wire ropes anchored by inflated Swellex bolts to assess the feasibility of this support concept. The test results demonstrate that a Swellex bolt generates a frictional anchorage that allows the wire rope to slide at high loads and to absorb significantly more energy than either a Swellex bolt alone, or a cement-grouted cable.The rope/friction bolt combination can be engineered to provide the desired energy absorption and allowable deformation by varying the installed lengths of the friction bolt and the rope. For yielding rope support, the contact length between the rope and Swellex bolt must be short enough to ensure that the rope can slip well before its tensile capacity is reached. A safe maximum overlap length is about one metre for the wire rope used in this testing. When used as support in the backs of drifts, a swaged button on the ropes end must be used to ultimately mobilize the full rope capacity thereby protecting against gravity-driven falls of ground."

"IntroductionThis chapter will discuss the operational and maintenance aspects of a heavy media cyclone circuits as applied to coal processing and using magnetite as the media. It deals with heavy media bath separators in terms of types of media, equipment, circuits, media recovery, maintenance, and product handling. It will detail heavy media cyclone operation and supplement the previously described topics.The heavy media cyclone was first developed in the Netherlands by the Dutch State Mines in 1945. A cyclone plant was not built in North America until 1961. Traditionally, heavy media cyclones have been used to treat size fractions between 1lz in. (12 .6 mm) and 35 mesh (0.5 mm). High maintenance related to heavy media bath separators has recently prompted some plants to crush all raw coal to minus 2 in. for treatment in heavy media cyclones.The heavy media bath separators utilize only the force of gravity to make the separation between heavy and light particles. This requires lengthy retention time which can lower capacity and also is inefficient for finer particles. A heavy media cyclone utilizes centrifugal forces which are 20 to 200 times greater than the force of gravity. This means the separation between coal and the impurities occurs very quickly, therefore a low retention time is required allowing cyclones to have high tonnage capacities. Also these greater forces allow better separation for the finer particle sizes.Heavy media cyclones are now widely used to produce both metallurgical and thermal coal. Work is in progress to reduce magnetite consumption, extend wear life, increase tonnage capacity, improve separation efficiency and automatically control these cyclone circuits."

The introduction of froth flotation technology in Canada, and in particular, in British Columbia, began not long after it was successfully applied in the Broken Hill mining area of Australia which began around 1905. It proved to be a revolutionary and transformative technology that resulted in marginal operations in copper, lead and zinc becoming profitable in spectacular fashion. The paper presents the technology of both oil flotation and froth flotation in the context of the challenges of the time and its early application in British Columbia at the Le Roi No.2 mine (1903), the Britannia Copper mine (1912), and at the Allenby concentrator of the Copper Mountain mine (1918-19). New-found archival documents indicate the Britannia application to be the first production application of froth flotation for copper ore outside Australia, a claim that is currently made by the Braden mine (now El Teniente) in Chile. Flotation was initially an add-on process following gravity methods but was rapidly shown to be far superior method for the bulk and selective recovery of metal sulphides. Flotation proved particularly successful for the recovery of zinc sulphide (the so-called ‘zinc problem’) which was considered a contaminant at the time. The ‘copper problem’ related to the poor recovery of fine copper sulphide particles that were not amenable to gravity methods. The success of flotation led to changes in both the scale and methods of mining, concentration and smelting in a manner that allowed integrated mining companies to flourish. Many are still with us today. INTRODUCTION The advent of froth flotation in the early 20th century was truly a revolutionary technological development, not only for the mining and metallurgical industries, but arguably more so for business and society overall. The Canadian technology historian Jeremy Mouat stated (1996) “The development of flotation was the greatest single metallurgical improvement of the modern era...it is not overstating the case to claim that flotation was of central importance to the smooth functioning of the global economy”. It should, therefore, be a story of interest to us all. The aim of this paper is not to retell the full story, that has been well covered by others (Hoover, 1912; Rickard, 1916a; Hines & Vincent, 1961; Lynch et al., 2010) but rather to add some Canadian perspective and the key role played by companies and individuals in those early days, focusing on events in British Columbia’s copper industry. EARLY DEVELOPMENTS During the later half of the 19th century, a number of flotation-related patents were issued. These include the 1860 patent (Britain) granted to William Haynes for a process to separate sulphides from ground ore by mixing it with oil (1-10% wt) followed by a separation process in a water-filled vessel; the 1877 patent granted to Georg and Adolph Bessel (Germany) for a process involving the mixing of oil and graphite ore followed by boiling in water to produce a high grade graphite froth (>90% carbon); and the 1885 patent granted to Rebecca ‘Carrie’ Everson for the separation of sulphides by mixing sulphide ore with small quantities of oil, and adding water followed by sulphuric acid. These processes are more properly referred to as bulk oil flotation due to the relatively large quantity of hydrocarbon used.

X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Electron Probe Micro-Analysis (EPMA) were used to characterize chemically the gold complex adsorbed on activatedcarbon from a solution containing 102mglL Au and 0.5 giL thiourea. This paper also considers the gold chloride and the gold cyanide systems. The results indicate gold is adsorbed on activated carbon from the thiourea solution as the gold (I) thiourea complex, i.e. Au [CS (NH) 2];' Other gold species such as metallic gold were not detected on the carbon support. These results also suggest the elution of the gold (I) thiourea complex can be performed with high recovery.

"The paper identifies two of the main problems encountered in recent hydrometallurgical plants for the recovery of gold and silver: firstly, the plant recovery is lower than anticipated from the testwork; secondly, the metallurgical accounting figures cannot be reconciled.The principal reasons for the plant recovery being lower than the testwork are discussed, together with solutions that can minimize these problems both during the design stage and during the plant operation after the problems have manifest themselves.The reasons for the difficulties in metallurgical accounting are analyzed by reviewing the various components of the plant figures. Recommended solutions are given for minimizing this problem and the realities of obtaining accurate figures are discussed.IntroductionThe start-up over the last few years of new hydrometallurgical plants for the recovery of gold and silver has brought to the surface again a number of problems. Most of the problems have existed for some time and they manifest themselves mainly in two ways. "Use of zinc shot feed is a well-established procedure among North American electro-galvanizers. This form of zinc is easy to handle and relatively inexpensive when compared with zinc oxide. This paper reports results on the kinetics of zinc shot dissolution in traditional pure zinc solutions and in electrolytes used for the plating of nickel/zinc alloys. Despite the cementation of minor amounts of nickel in the latter solution, acceptable dissolution rates of the zinc shot can be achieved through proper adjustment of the solution velocity. Under these conditions, the nickel shell produced by cementation is continuously abraded, exposing the underlying zinc.IntroductionThe use of insoluble, noble metal-containing anodes rather than soluble zinc anodes for the operation of high current density electro-galvanizing lines has gained almost universal acceptance. Two major reasons for this trend are:• improved control of the process by virtue of constant inter-electrode distance; and• increased productivity because the operation of the lines does not require the relatively frequent interruptions for replacement of consumed anodes .The results of the principal anode and cathode reactions are, respectively, depletion of the zinc content of the electrolyte and the increase on its acidity;"

Because these concentrations are proportioned to the emanating power, this set of curves can be structured to show the fraction of maximum concentrations possible at various porosities of the rock.10.1.2. Notice that at 10, 20 and 30% porosities a 5-cm sample (hand-sized and drill-sized pieces) has no practical increase in pore concentration. Thus, by measuring the emanating power of hand-sized pieces of ore, the actual radon gas production into any pile of broken ore could be estimated readily."

Canadian copper, nickel, zinc, lead and molybdenum mines are characterized by the mining of ores from which more than one metal is recovered. During the 1980s, approximately 15% of the gold, 25% of the zinc, 30% of the copper, 55% of the molybdenum, 80% of the silver and 90% of the lead produced from Canadian mines were produced as co-products and by-products of base metal mining operations. This trend is not expected to change significantly in the near future. The presence of co-products and by-products affects the level of production and the level of revenue from base metal mines in several ways: (I) in general, production of one base metal cannot be expanded or cut back without affecting the amount of production of another metal;(2) the commercial success of certain base metal mining operations depends on the substantial bonus revenues from co-products and by-products; (3) the quality and economic viability of many ore deposits are significantly improved by the presence of co-products and by-products; and (4) while coproduction is critical to the survival of some mines, bonus revenue from by-products can also be life saving to others during economic downturns. For these reasons, deposits with significant co-product or by-product values are likely to continue to be significant targets for exploration and for acquisition.

"The non-ferrous pyrometallurgical industry has been under extreme pressure since 1980 and significant changes are taking place, principally in the copper, nickel and lead industries. This paper reviews some of these changes, particularly with respect to smelter capacity, major technical trends, and the industry's response to increased energy costs and environmental constraints.The Canadian metal mineral production for 1985 has been estimated at a value of over $8 billion, of which half is derived from copper, nickel, lead and zinc production. It is in our national interest that the Canadian industry remain competitive in the world market and continue its traditional contribution to the Canadian economy. IntroductionPyrometallurgy by definition requires energy, usually in the form of fuel, and produces process gas streams which can no longer be discharged directly to atmosphere in most countries. While the industry has been under varying degrees of pressure over the past fifteen years, it is just since the early 1980s that major changes have taken place, due, to a large extent, to an oversupply on the primary metal markets and depressed prices. These factors, combined with a surge in the price of oil, have resulted in some trends developing which must be recognized by those in the industry who plan to be in operation and competitive in the next decade.Although the value of Canada's mineral production, in terms of constant dollars, has decreased by more than 35% over the period from 1980 to 1985, the bulk of this production is exported and the industry still makes a significant contribution to the Canadian economy."

"Geerite (Cu1.6S) is a rhombohedral copper sulphide which occurs naturally in epitactic replacement of sphalerite; cell dimensions closely approximate those of the host sphalerite.Geerite-type structures can be produced by leaching digenite (Cu1.8S) in ferric sulphate solutions. X -ray diffract ion and electron microprobe studies indicate that eight metastable geeritetype structures can be produced, depending upon the concentration of f erric sulphate solution used and the duration of the each. Although compositions cluster on or near values observed for natural phases, optical properties indicate that we are dealing with polymorphs of these phases. Leaching of chalcocite (CU2Sj in dilute f erric sulphate solutions produces similar results. In contrast, leaching of chalcocite in more concentrated solutions seems to produce true analogues of natural minerals.During froth flotation, sphalerite is activated with a monolayer of floatable copper sulphide with the composition, CuS, of the mineral covellite. However, covellite is not significantly more floatable than sphalerite, and has an incompatible structure because of the presence of covalently-bonded atoms of sulphur. Leaching ofdigenite was used to produce a polymorph of covellite with a geerite-type structure, compatible with that of sphalerite. This polymorph has a flotational behaviour similar to copper-activated sphalerite, suggesting that the monolayer has a geerite-type CuS structure. IntroductionIn an ideal close-packed sulphide structure the distance between sulphur layers, D, is equal to 2R 2/3, where R is the radius of the sulphur atoms. In sulphides with covalently-bonded sulphur layers, such as covellite (Fig. I), D will be an average of the number of covalentl y-bonded and close-packed sulphur layers, weighted as to the relative number of each type of layer. Both D and R are spacings which are readily identifiable structurally and on X-ray diffraction patterns. Goblel has shown that for copper-iron sulphides with metal-to-sulphur ratios between 0 and 2 and copper-to-total metal ratio s between 113 and I there are strong correlations between composition and measured D and R distances (Fig. 2). D can be represented by a single empirical equation relating interlayer spacing to composition; R must be represented by three equations relating the radius of sulphur atoms to composition. One of these equations (R, in Fig. 2) represents ideal close-packed behaviour, the other two represent sulphur radii greater than (R1) or less than (Rh) the ideal."

"The use of a torque wrench to establish the amount of actual load developed on an expansion anchor bofting system dates back to work completed in the early 1950s. The advent of ultrasonic measurement systems and hydraulic torque wrenches has made it possible for the U.S. Bureau of Mines to perform torque-tension measurements in the laboratory and the field much more accurately. The results indicate that the amount of initial boft preload may be overestimated by amounts in excess of 45% of the expected load using torque wrenches. This inaccuracy is primarily due to the friction that occurs between the bearing plate and the head of the boft. These parameters become extremely important when the support system is being used to prevent joint members from slipping relative to each other or when the boft acts as a heavy spring to clamp two or more sections together. Methods to overcome the frictional losses are presented in conjunction with a laboratory method to determine the actual torque-tension ratios for expansion anchor and combination bolting systems.IntroductionMechanically anchored roof bolts have been widely used in the mining industry since their introduction in 1947. Estimates made in 1989 indicate that out of 85 million fixtures, approximately 49 million bolting fixtures still use applied tension to complete the reinforcement necessary to maintain stable openings. Nearly 85 million bolts are used yearly. The most widely used bolt is the resin-anchored headed rebar, followed by standard mechanical roof bolts, specialty bolts (mechanically anchored, resin enhanced fixtures) , and combination bolts . Po st-tensioned resin rebars, combination systems, and friction stabilizers make up the remaining 10% of the units used (Fig. I).For mechanical, combination, and tension rebar bolts, the bolt tension is the primary means of reinforcing the roof, but in many cases, because of poor installation procedures, the bolts are ineffective. Mine operators recognize the importance of proper installation procedures. Long-term bolt tension measurements are required in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)In each bolting cycle, the actual torque or tension of the first tensioned bolt installed with each drill head shall be measured immediately after it is installed. Thereafter, for each drill head used, at least one roof bolt out of every four installed shall be measured for actual torque or tension. If the actual torque or tension of any roof bolts measured is not within the range specified in the roof control plan, corrective action shall be taken."

"Water is encountered at the majority of underground mines, both over their lifetime and during each stage of development and production. The dewatering system is one of the most important and costly components of an underground mining operation and it is often not well designed and analyzed. An effective design of a mine dewatering system will greatly reduce its energy cost as well as improve working conditions and reduce production costs. A computer-based system, called Qpump, has been developed to assist the underground operator to effectively design and/or assess over-all and local mine dewatering systems. The design features and principles used in the development of Qpump are introduced and an example which illustrates typical applications is presented.IntroductionTraditionally, dewatering operations have been given lower priority than many other operations in underground mining. Invariably water will be encountered during the sinking of the mine shaft, during development and subsequent production. The dewatering system thus becomes a very important component of an underground mine operation and, in fact, any mine manager will attest to the importance and necessity of an efficient mine dewatering system.The water problem is of varying importance at different mines. There are several factors that contribute to the water encountered. It is a function of the mining method and techniques utilized (backfill system, drilling and raising technology, dust control sprays, shaft water rings, etc.) and of prevailing conditions (ground water, rock structure and permeability). In some cases a mine may be so dry that little pumping is required while in others, the weight of water pumped may exceed by many times that of ore mined.The successful design and application of a mine dewatering system is dependent upon the operating conditions of each specific operation. There are no standard procedures and systems which can be used for all mining situations. However, an effective water system will greatly reduce the energy and production costs of a mine, improve working conditions and eliminate headaches because of flooded working places."

"The Conservative Government 's budget proposals brought forward on December 11, 1979 have been withdrawn, but they are far from dead. On the contrary, a number of those budget proposals, especially the ones which would close loopholes and result in other technical changes being made to the Income Tax Act, should be considered to be alive and well.It is not unreasonable to expect the next government, of whatever political persuasion, to reintroduce many of these technical changes in the next federal budget. For that reason, last December's budget may have offered an interesting preview of what the mining industry and other taxpayers can expect in 1980. It is quite possible that some of these changes may be effective as of the original dates announced in the withdrawn budget proposals.This month, ""Tax Notes"" reviews the main pro visions of Mr. Crosbie's December, 1979 budget, with a primary focus on the changes that would have affected the resource sector.It must be emphasized that all of the budget proposals discussed herein have been withdrawn, that none of them are law and that any actual changes in our tax rules will have to be dealt with by the new Parliament that will be assembled following the February 18 election. December 1979budget withdrawnThe federal budget proposals brought forward by Finance Minister John Crosbie on December II, 1979 were withdrawn as a result of the defeat of the Conservative Government on a motion of non-confidence in the House of Commons on December 13. However, it appears quite possible that at least some of the proposals may be introduced into Parliament at a future date, possibly with retroactive effect.In a press release issued by the Department of Finance, Finance Minister John Crosbie stated that if the Conservative Government is returned to power, it will reintroduce all of the measures contained in his December II budget.Mr. Crosbie stated that all of the income tax measures contained in the budget would be reintroduced, effective on the dates indicated in the Notice of Ways and Means Motion tabled on December II. Some of the more important measures in December II budget, and their effective dates as indicated in the Notice of Ways and Means Motion, are discussed below.The December budget had also introduced or increased excise taxes or duties on gasoline, wines, cosmetics and photofinishing. If the Conservative party is re-elected, these measures will be reintroduced with prospective effect (i.e . effective as of new dates to be announced in the new budget)."

"A 3-dimensional finite element model for stress/stability analysis of rock excavations in underground mines is presented. Developed for use on personal computer under OS/2 operating system, the model employs the 8-node isoparametric brick element and accounts for such loading conditions as in situ stresses and gravity loading of the rock mass. In addition, modelling of backfill in mine stopes as in situ stress-free material is incorporated. Material failure is assessed by Mohr-Coulomb or Hoek-Brown failure criterion. A mine design example is presented to illustrate the potential use of the model as a tool for stope design.IntroductionNumerical modelling of mine structures has become a vital tool for mine design in recent years. The need to maximize ore extraction ratio and to reach deeper mineral deposits underground has led the mining industry to employ numerical methods of analysis to undertake complex ground control studies in order to better understand the ground response to mining excavations and to evaluate the ground support requirements. Thanks to the rapid developments in computer technology, it is now possible to perform very comprehensive analyses including, but not limited to, 3-dimensional, elasto-plastic, or large deformation or time dependent nonlinear analyses on personal computer.During the past ten years or so, many researchers undertook 3-D finite element analyses of rock mechanics problems in mining engineering. The following is only a sample review. For example, Chan'!' used three-dimensional finite elements to study the mechanical response of jointed granite during shaft sinking at the Canadian Underground Research Laboratory. Wang et al.(2) performed 2-D and 3-D finite element analyses of room-and-pillar mining system with flat and rolling coal seams. Thatejatu used three-dimensional finite element method to examine the problem of branching tunnels. These Leading Practice Guidelines for Mineral Processing (LPGMP) were prepared by the Sub-Committee on Leading Practice Guidelines for Mineral Processing. The Sub-Committee reports to the Executive Committee of the Canadian Mineral Processors (CMP) which is a Technical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum (CIM) and incorporates those members of the CIM who are concerned with the processing of mineral deposits. The LPGMP covers the involvement of mineral processing professionals, referred to as Practitioners in this document, in providing inputs to the estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves and providing technical content for internal reports as well as public reports on mineral projects as required under National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101). The LPGMP supplement the CIM Exploration Practice Guidelines (2018) and the CIM Estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Practice Guidelines (2019) which are referenced in Companion Policy 43-101CP to NI 43-101 and recognized internationally. The LPGMP consist of 3 sections: • Principles of Process Support in Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Estimation; • Appendix A – Use of Supporting Studies in Process Evaluation and Assessment for NI 43-101 Documentation; • Appendix B – Glossary of Terms Relevant to the LPGMP. The LPGMP deal primarily with the description of leading practice as it applies to the mineral processing and extraction of base metals, precious metals, and other mineral products by the application of mineral processing technology. Other commodities may be considered with future updates of these guidelines. It is expected that this is a ‘living’ document and that these guidelines will develop in the future to address the requirements of the mining industry, investing public, and mining professionals involved. Clarifications and changes to these guidelines will be done under the guidance of the Executive Committee of the CMP.

As Mr. Lundberg has already ably covered the theory of various methods of electrical prospecting, I shall confine my remarks to a consideration of the features which must obtain in an electrical prospecting method in order that it may be useful from a practical standpoint. These remarks I shall make with particular reference to the Elbof method. The successful application of all these methods rests, in the first place, upon the possibility of correlating theory, or empirically established facts, with the field data. Their practical usefulness, however, requires that the technique of making the field observations, and the procedure itself, be such that the method may be applied to large areas, under normal average conditions. The method, therefore, should not involve excessive preliminary labour costs to prepare the ground for actual prospecting work, nor should the prospecting work itself be so slow that its cost, when applied to extensive areas, becomes prohibitive. Moreover, it should be possible to apply the method even under difficult terrain conditions, such as rough topography and dense vegetation. It may be said of most of the methods referred to in the preceding paper, that, while they are interesting and theoretically sound, they fail to meet such practical requirements as I have outlined.
