At the concentration plant of the Gol-E-Gohar Iron Ore Company (Iran) three 9 m × 2.05 m AG mills (fixed speed) are used in parallel in a dry operation. The performance of AG mills has been lower than the target value indicated by an increase in the product size (P80) from 450 µm (target) to 515 µm and low power draw (50% of nominal). By simulation it was found that increasing the liner lifter face angle from 7 to 30o while keeping the original lifter height (i.e., 22.5 cm) could provide an appropriate charge trajectory. When the proposed liners installed in one of the AG mills, the throughput increased by 27%; when 5% (v/v) balls were added the throughput increased by 40%. The product size also decreased from 515 to 501 µm.

The presence of a high iron concentration, 9.1 g/L, in the raffinate of the Sarcheshmeh copper heap bioleach process led to the formation of various types of jarosite, (K,Na,NH4,H3O)Fe3(SO4)2(OH)6, on the heap mineral surfaces. This study probes iron removal from the raffinate using a bio-oxidation process based on A. ferrooxidans bacteria in the presence and absence of jarosite seed. The jarosite seed was biologically synthesized using A. ferrooxidans bacteria. The effect of solution pH (1.5 to 2.5) and jarosite seed dosage (0 to 15 wt.%) on iron removal was examined. It was demonstrated that the concentration of iron ions present in the raffinate decreased from 9.1 g/L to 2.5 g/L with the addition of 10 wt.% jarosite seed at pH 2 and 130 rpm mixing rate at 32°C. Three different types of raffinate including (1) native raffinate containing 9.1, 3.4, 5.7 g/L of total, ferric and ferrous iron, respectively, (2) bio-oxidized raffinate in the absence of the jarosite seed containing 8.5 g/L total iron (mainly ferric with negligible ferrous), (3) bio-oxidized raffinate in the presence of jarosite seed containing 2.55 g/L total iron (mainly ferric with negligible ferrous) were used in mesophilic, moderate thermophilic and thermophilic bioleaching processes. The results of the flask tests showed that the highest copper bioleaching recoveries of 9.4, 49.4 and 90.8 % were achieved using raffinate (3) with mesophilic, moderate thermophilic and thermophilic bioleaching processes, respectively.

In heap leaching the transport of the acid from the drippers to the surface of the ore particles is a major factor in the overall performance of a heap. This flow behaviour is complex as the flow is unsaturated and occurs along a tortuous set of inter-particle channels and connections. The particle properties such as size, shape and porosity are very important when modelling the liquid holdup and flow within heaps, since the dominant mechanisms at work are quite different. This paper investigates the effect of these particle properties experimentally on heap flow behaviour using a 1-D column leaching system consisting of non-porous glass beads with a system of actual ore particles. The similarities and differences between the two systems on flow behaviour are described using an inter-particle flow model. In addition, the applicability of positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) for laboratory column leaching will be detailed to calculate hydrodynamic dispersion in packed beds compared to more conventional residence time distribution (RTD) tests and also to obtain the time averaged rivulet flow paths through the particles of the bed for the better understanding of heap hydrodynamics.

The basic studies on the surface properties and flotation characteristics of ilmenite were made by electrophoretic, adsorption, contact-angle and floatability measurements. The isoelectric point of ilmenite is found to be at pH 5.6. By combining the results of electrokinetic studies and adsorption measurements, a clearer picture of the ilmenite-solution interface was observed. These findings were correlated with the floatability of ilmenite obtained by Hallimond tube tests. The general flotation characteristics of ilmenite are compared with those obtained for magnetite and rutile. It is indicated that the above three minerals, namely, ilmenite, magnetite and rutile, have very similar surface properties and flotation characteristics. Therefore, it is difficult to make an effective separation of these minerals by flotation. However, it is found that sodium orthophosphate acts as a selective depressant for magnetite in anionic flotation. Therefore, close pH control of the pulp in the presence of the phosphate ion enhances the possibility for a successful separation of these minerals.

This work details the application of a decentralized control strategy to a pilot flotation column working with a two-phase system (water-air). The process is represented by a multivariable system composed of three inputs and three outputs. The selected control variables are the froth depth, the air hold-up and the bias rate, whereas the corresponding manipulated variables are the set-points of the local flow controllers of tailings, air and wash water. All controlled variables are estimated using electrical conductivity based techniques. In particular, the results of a new method for estimating the bias rate, based on the measurement of the volumetric fraction of wash water under the interface, is presented. This method reduces the coupling problem associated to the bias estimation as a difference between feed and tailing water rates. Moreover, the nominal system transfer matrix can be represented by an upper triangular matrix, in such a way that the closed-loop system stability reduces to the stability of the independent control loops. The experimental results show that the closed-loop system performance, particularly that of the bias rate loop, is strongly dependent on the air flow rate, reaching in some cases the saturation point of the controller.

INTRODUCTORY PROSPECTING for aluminum has always been, and still is, a peculiar combination of the technical with the physical approach, and 1 want to explain my conception of the term 'prospecting' when applied to aluminum, which differs in some respects from the ordinarily accepted idea of prospecting. In the early days of gold mining, prospecting was a search in the hills and the river beds for the metal, not for its chemical combinations. And so it was in the early days of aluminum, with the difference that the search for the metal was carried on, not in the hills and dales, but in chemical laboratories. Aluminum is never found in the elemental state and at that time the metal bad never been seen, but scientists of that day bad forecast that such a metal must exist and in 1807 Sir Humphrey Davy went so far as to give this unseen metal a name, aluminum, from the Greek word alumen. This word applies to our alum, and it was from alum that Davy sought to produce the metal. It is strange to think that, in laboratories throughout England and on the continent, prospecting for aluminum was busily under way by men who had never seen the metal they were searching for. Their situation was something like that of the fisherman and the 'big one' that got away. They could describe the metal, give its exact weight, and even name it, but they could not produce visual evidence of its existence. Eventually, however, the efforts of the scientist 'prospectors' were rewarded and in 1826 the metal was actually produced, possibly first by Wohler, though Oerstedt, a Danish chemist, is usually credited with the achievement.

Coal comprises 71% of our fossil energy and with rapidly advancing handling and burning technology will clearly play a major role in our national energy mix, eventually as synthetic gases and liquids.International coal markets are very competitive and Canada is disadvantaged by long rail hauls to port, and a heavy tax burden. However, high mine productivity has allowed us to increase our markets.Currently, domestic markets are dominated by coal use for electrical generation, a market with significant growth opportunities.Strong growth is expected in export thermal markets, while metallurgical coal demand is projected to show little or no growth in the medium term. This is more than double our oil sands resource and dwarfs our conventional crude oil and gas resources (Fig. I). In the short term, coal as a solid fuel plays a significant part in the Canadian energy scene. In the longer term, coal, in the form of electricity and eventually liquids and gases, has a tremendous role to play. In 1986, Canada produced 57.8 million tonnes, slightly down from the record high of 60.8 million tonnes in 1985. Our exports in 1986 were 26.0 million tonnes, a growth of 53% in three years."

"More than 20 years ago, Paques B.V. introduced innovative biotechnologies to recover metals and to remove sulfate from aqueous streams. These technologies find their origin in the exploration of microorganisms involved in the global sulfur cycle. Currently, several sulfur cycle biotechnologies are applied successfully at full-scale. The sulfur cycle is closely linked with the iron cycle, and also the latter offers opportunities for application of innovative biotechnology for the mining industry. Microorganisms of the natural iron cycle carry out reactions that are not feasible by chemical methods such as ferrous iron oxidation with oxygen at pH below 4. Iron oxidation with oxygen can be conducted using microorganisms living at pH between 0.5 and 7 and at temperatures between 0 and 95ºC. Remarkably these microorganisms can also carry out arsenite oxidation at similar acidic conditions and high temperatures. Making use of the extreme features of these microorganisms, Paques and Wageningen University have developed a biological process to precipitate arsenic as scorodite. This biological formation of scorodite is a novel combination of biological oxidation and biocrystallization. Depending on the level of saturation, biological oxidation rates and operational conditions, we could control the formation of the iron precipitates such as jarosite and scorodite. Currently new microorganisms have been harvested from hot springs and rock acid mine drainage to foster the growth of specialized microbial communities with potential high iron and arsenic oxidation capacities and higher resistance to other metals. In our paper we address the ongoing research and development of the bioscorodite process.THE USE OF IRON TO REMOVE ARSENIC In 2015 several environmental disasters related to the release of mine wastewater and tailings occurred. On August 5th, a waste water spill occurred from the Gold King Mine near Silverton, Colorado. A dam holding the tailing pond was damaged and spilled three million US gallons (11 ML) of mine wastewater and tailings, including elements such as cadmium, lead and arsenic, into Cement Creek, a tributary of the Animas River in Colorado. “At their peak, arsenic levels were 300 times the normal level and lead was 3,500 times the normal level” (The Guardian, 2015). In early November, another collapse of a mining dam in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais spilled between ten and sixteen thousand US gallons of water and sediment after a dam failed from an iron ore mine. Arsenic and mercury polluted the Doce River, arsenic levels were found more than ten times above the legal limit in some places of the river (The Guardian, 2015). Waste production is inevitable during Mining. However, a preventive waste management strategy could have minimised waste production, maximised waste reuse and classified waste by their hazardous degree."

Plotting sets of data collected over time using a frequency-magnitude distribution is common with both earthquake and mining seismology. A Time-Between-Events (TBE) analysis technique simply makes use of the inter-event times and b-values (slopes of the best fit lines on the frequency-magnitude charts) from the same set of data. Four distinct patterns in TBE versus Event Magnitude have been found which suggest whether there are constant seismic sources causing populations of data, or if the smaller and larger events, within the population represent varying seismic sources. Different rates of events, identified as TBE-rates in this study, may suggest whether the events are blast induced, or not. This study was done using actual seismic datasets from hardrock mines in Canada and Australia. This was to verify the applicability of the method to multiple mining environments and to determine the practicality and implications of this methodology to enhance the interpretation of seismic source mechanisms The results of the TBE technique and other proven techniques are combined into a Seismic Mechanism Assessment Worksheet. This is a tool that allows operators to compare trends within seismic datasets with assessments of in-situ rock conditions. The goal is to enhance the understanding of rockmass failure mechanisms.

"The results of tests carried out on a 3-in. hydrocyclone have shown the linear relationships that exist between: (1) the flow-rate of water in the feed to and the overflow product from the cyclone; (2) the flow-rate of solids in the feed to and the underflow product from the cyclone. The underflow size distribution of an operation has been found to be linear and its usefulness in evaluating particle distribution in the cyclone has been discussed. Effects of design and operating variables on the above relationships have been discussed. The performance of this 3-in. hydrocyclone has been compared with that of a 20-in. cyclone, the results for which are available in the literature."

Aluminum was hot worked at 400 - 500°C and strain rates (e ) of 0.004 -0.1s-1, under reversing strains (c) of 0.5 to 0.2 or 0.5 to 0 and also advancing from 0.5 to 1 or 0.5 to 5. Under similar test conditions for different parts of the strain paths, the average measured flow stresses are found to agree with each other. In the forward and backward strain path tests, the almost identical steady state plateaus affirm the occurrence of dynamic recovery (DRV). On reversal of strain direction at constant e , there was generally negligible Bauschinger effect. In specimens annealed at 400°C, static recrystallisation (SRX) was followed microstructurally. mainly by disappearance of elongated grains with serrated boundaries because the new grains were only little a finer than the old due to low strain energy. The only influence of reversing strain path observed was the effect of change of grain boundary area as grains elongated or returned towards equiaxed. In optical microscopy, elongated grains with serrations and deformation bands confirmed DRV in forward path specimens. In reverse path specimens, equiaxed grains were gradually restored with retention of serrations and bands. In low magnification polarized optical microscopy, grain alignment increased with strain for forward path specimens; whereas it decreased in reverse path ones, supporting DRV. Orientation imaging microscopy (OIM/SEM) revealed that elongated grains are broken up as deformation bands rotate during the forward path and that grains return to equiaxed appearance on backward straining. Comparative studies using optical microscopy in polarized light (POM), OIM/SEM and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that while subgrains remain equiaxed and constant in size and character during the forward and backward paths, the fraction of low angle facets decreased while that of high angle grain facets increased with increasing strain; these are coupled with a fairly low fraction of medium angle boundaries. The results contribute to the understanding that dynamic recovery in aluminum maintains sub-boundaries with low misorientation but as grains elongate and more subgrain become adjacent to grain boundaries the fraction of high angle boundaries rises (with backward straining it was vice versa).

This paper offers a brief review of current literature pertaining to vacuum degassing or vacuum casting of steel as practiced in the U.S.A., Germany and the U.S.S.R. The advantages of vacuum degassing of large forging ingots, heavy section casting, for the conversion of rimming bessemer steels to killed steel and for the production of transformer steels are discussed. Operating pressures, reduction in gas contents and improvements in hydrogen segregation, steel cleanliness and mechanical properties, obtained with the various techniques, are described. The paper includes a description of an experimental vacuum stream-droplet degassing unit and some preliminary results obtained at the Physical Metallurgy Division Research Laboratories Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa on laboratory steel melts. Arsenic (As), bismuth (Bi) and antimony (Sb) are known to affect the quality of copper deposits in copper electrowinning operations. The codeposition of As was previously believed to occur only at current densities far exceeding the range of typical current densities for copper electrowinning. In this study, we investigate the copper electrodeposition on different pretreated stainless steel (SS) substrates from bleed electrolyte in galvanostatic mode at –45 mA/cm². Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs illustrate that during the initial phases of copper nucleation and growth, the current density was locally increased due to the pretreatments. It was reasoned that the codepostion of As could possibly occur in normal electrowinning conditions, but the risk can be substantially reduced by good SS substrate handling and maintenance practices. INTRODUCTION The presence of As, Bi and Sb is known to have a deleterious effect on the copper cathode quality in copper electrowinnings (Hiskey & Maeda, 2003; Hoffmann, 2004; Xiao, Cao, Shen, & Volinsky, 2012; Xiao, Cao, Mao, Shen, & Ren, 2014; Jafari et al., 2017). They are known to influence both the chemical and physical quality of the copper as they can contaminate the copper (Jafari et al., 2017) and affect the copper deposit structure (Hiskey & Maeda, 2003; Kim, Kim, & Chung, 2009), which contributes to a degraded market value of the copper (Tuddenham, 1984). The incorporation mechanisms of these impurities are believed to occur mainly through slime inclusion (F. Xiao et al, 2012) and electrolyte inclusion (Hiskey & Maeda, 2003). Other studies suggested that codeposition of these impurities is possible by their standard reduction potential being close to the one of copper (Xiao et al, 2014). Hiskey and Maeda (2003) investigated the copper electrodeposition on a copper electrode substrate in Cu electrolytes with a Cu, H2SO4, As, Bi, Sb composition representative for commercial copper tankhouses. The combination of voltammographic techniques and Auger electron spectroscopy showed that As was the first impurity to be electrodeposited from this electrolyte, yet at potentials where the limiting current density of the copper electrodeposition reaction is exceeded. The copper tankhouses usually operate at a current density ratio of 0.3 to the limiting current density in order to achieve tolerable copper quality deposits. The codeposition of As could be considered impossible in this current density condition. However, it is known that during the initial phases of electrodeposition on foreign substrates, a substantial part of the reaction proceeds by growth of individual nuclei where the current density is locally high and diffusion limited (Radisic, Ross, & Searson, 2006). Furthermore, it was observed that copper nucleation on TiO substrates occurred preferentially in the scratched oxide free areas which could serve as parts with high localized current densities (Chang, Choe, & Lee, 2005).

"Abstract- The Legris Lake Complex is a northeast-trending, 7.3 km long by 3.5 km wide, maficultramafic intrusive complex located in the western Wabigoon Subprovince of the Archean Superior Province. It is one of a series of mafic-ultramafic igneous complexes, the most notable of which is the Lac des Iles Complex, host to Canada’s only producing Pd mine with reserves of 93.5 Mt grading 1.53 g/t Pd as of December 2001 (North American Palladium Ltd., Annual Report 2001). Cu-Ni- PGE mineralization was first discovered in the Legris Lake Complex by a local prospector late in 1999. Shortly thereafter, the property was jointly optioned by Avalon Ventures Ltd. and Starcore Resources Ltd., who continue to discover significant Cu-Ni-PGE mineralization.One of the most notable features of the Legris Lake Complex is the occurrence of extensive brecciation caused by multiple injections of volatile-rich magma. The Cu-Ni-PGE mineralization is hosted by leucogabbro within a 2 km long by 600 m wide, highly brecciated area in the northwestern area of the Complex. The mineralized rocks contain disseminated to blebby sulfides (1 to 5 vol.%), comprising chalcopyrite + pyrite ± pyrrhotite + millerite ± pentlandite, typically surrounded by epidote. The majority of the Cu-Ni-PGE mineralization displays low ratios of Pt/Pd (~0.20) and high ratios of Cu/Ni (~2.9), which are similar to those of the Lac des Iles and the River Valley mafic-ultramafic complexes. The lithologies in Legris Lake Complex bear similarities to the heterolithic gabbro of the Twilight and Roby Zone deposits at the nearby Lac des Iles mine. However, the mineralization at Legris Lake, which is restricted to leucogabbro overlying unmineralized clinopyroxenite, is similar to that of stratiform deposits such as the Stillwater and Munni Munni complexes. The mineralization at Legris Lake is best explained by the late-stage, immiscible separation of a sulfide melt from volatile-rich parental magmas and the subsequent minor redistribution of metals by deuteric fluids."

"A novel hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery from waste printed circuit boards has been proposed, which consists of selective leaching of copper metal as Cu(I) by Cu(II) in ammoniacal alkaline solution, purification, and electrowinning. The distinct feature of this process is much lower power consumption during the electrowinning than that during the conventional one from acidic copper sulfate media, because the deposition of copper metal from Cu(I) at the cathode and the oxidation of Cu(I) to Cu(II) at the anode take place in the present method. In the laboratory-scale tests using waste printed circuit boards, high purity copper which contains 1.1ppm of impurities was obtained in a chloride system. INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of various metals from waste materials is an important issue in order to conserve the environment and metal resources. Copper is used for cables, electric appliances, etc., and is currently a very important material for industries and will continue to be in the future. Among the wastes that contain copper, one of the most complex recycling materials is electronic scrap like printed circuit boards (PCB), which generally contain 10-30% copper as well as plastics, fibreglass and other metals. There are two ways to recover copper, either pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical. Hydrometallurgical treatments generally have more flexibilities in the process scale and control. The separation processes tend to become complicated because of the poor selectivity during the leaching in the sulphuric and hydrochloric acid media. On the other hand, the use of ammonia as a complexing agent, gave a higher selectivity for copper leaching (Nigo, Majima, Hirato, Awakura, & Iwai, 1993; Majima, Nigo, Hirato, Awakura, & Iwai, 1993; Zhou, Shinme, & Anezaki, 1995; Koyama, Tanaka, & Lee, 2006) .In this study, recycling process containing leaching, copper deposition at a cathode and oxidation of copper(I) at an anode from ammoniacal alkaline solutions containing Cu(I) or Cu(II) is introduced. Furthermore, copper recovery from a waste printed circuit boards and impurity behaviour was examined in ammonia-ammonium sulfate (sulfate system) and ammonia-ammonium chloride (chloride system) systems."

"Abstract - The Burnt Timber gold deposit is located in the Paleoproterozoic Lynn Lake greenstone belt of the Trans-Hudson Orogen, Manitoba. The deposit occurs along the Johnson shear zone, and is hosted by enriched and depleted tholeiitic volcanic arc basalts cut by feldspar porphyry dikes. The Johnson shear zone is a regional, belt-parallel structure characterized by the intensification of the regional S2 foliation. At the Burnt Timber deposit, S2 is folded by centimeter- to meter-scale, Z-shaped, F3 chevron folds that have an axial planar S3 crenulation cleavage. Within the 20 to 30 m-wide core zone of the shear zone, S2 and F3 are transposed parallel to S3 and the volcanic rocks are strongly sheared parallel to S3. The presence of a steeply plunging stretching lineation, together with dextral shear sense indicators along both S2 and S3 on horizontal surfaces, suggest that the Johnson shear zone is a dextral transpression zone. Gold was introduced in pyritic, biotitic, and carbonatized mafic volcanic rocks along the core of the shear zone. Mylonitic mafic volcanic rocks contain localized high-grade zones (=10 g/t Au) that differ from wider carbonatized, low-grade zones (<3 g/t Au) by the presence of deformed gold-bearing quartz-pyrite veins. High-grade zones are also associated with swarms of quartz-pyrite veins that cut across sericitized and carbonatized feldspar porphyry dikes, which acted as brittle, competent bodies during shearing. Gold deposition in the high-grade zones was controlled by the channeling of hydrothermal fluid along the core of the shear zone during shearing of the volcanic rocks, and brittle fracturing of the porphyry dikes. Sommaire - Le gîte aurifère de Burnt Timber est situé dans la ceinture de roches vertes Paléoprotérozoïque de Lynn Lake dans l’orogène Trans-Hudsonien, au Manitoba. Ce gîte est situé le long de la zone de cisaillement de Johnson et est encaissé dans des basaltes tholéiitiques d’arc enrichis et appauvris recoupés par des dykes porphyriques. La zone de cisaillement de Johnson est une structure régionale parallèle à la ceinture de Lynn Lake caractérisée par une intensité accrue de la foliation régionale S2. Au gîte de Burnt Timber, S2 est affectée par un plissement F3 en chevrons en Z d’échelle centimétrique à métrique associé à un clivage de crénulation de plan axial S3. Dans la zone centrale de 20 à 30 m de largeur au sein de la zone de cisaillement, S2 et F3 sont transposés parallèlement à S3 et les roches volcaniques sont fortement cisaillées le long de S3. La présence conjointe d’une linéation d’étirement à forte plongée et d’indicateurs cinématiques dextres sur les surfaces horizontales S2 et S3 suggère que la zone de cisaillement de Johnson est une zone transpressive dextre. L’or a été mis en place dans des volcanites mafiques altérées en pyrite, en biotite, et en carbonate au coeur de la zone de cisaillement. Les roches volcaniques mylonitiques présentent des zones aurifères locales à haute teneur (=10 g/t Au) qui diffèrent des zones à basse teneur (<3 g/t Au) par la présence de veines de quartz et de pyrite aurifère. Mg micropowders generated by gas atomisation of a magnesium melt with argon were mixed and ball milled with ceramic nanoparticles prepared by laser-induced gas phase reaction. The materials were then hot extruded. Specimens were deformed in tensile as well as compression tests at temperatures between 20 and 300 °C at a constant initial strain rate. The flow stress is significantly influenced by the test temperature. The yield stress decreases with temperature. This decrease and the flat character of the stressstrain curves at elevated temperatures indicate possible contributions of softening processes. The materials studied exhibit high-damping characteristics. The results are analysed and possible mechanisms are discussed.

Three dimensional (3D) seismic exploration has been carried out since the 1980s in the mining district of China, where it has been playing an indispensable role in the high yield and efficiency of coal mining. Unlike oil exploration, this technique uses high density seismic acquisition technology. In recent years, it has focused on wide azimuth 3D seismic acquisition. Evaluation of geometry moved away from depending on folds, azimuth and offset, toward being based upon a focus-ray beam. Conventionally, coalfield 3D seismic interpretation focused on time domain and was based on kinematics information, which is only suitable for less complex geological conditions. To achieve high-resolution processing for the complex topography and structure in coalfields, data processing shifted from poststack to prestack. The means to improve the accuracy of interpretation for complex geological conditions are 1) integration of multiple attributes and multiple disciplines, 2) combination of seismic and geological data, and 3) comprehensive combination of time domain and depth domain data. With the demand for lithological exploration, high-resolution data processing must also take into account the requirements of preserving amplitude in seismic data. Seismic attributes technology, seismic inversion technology, and dynamic tracking interpretation are key techniques in 3D seismic exploration. They greatly improve interpretation accuracy, produce better results in the goaf space description of the coal-bearing strata and coal seam structure, and effectively reduce exploration costs under complicated geological conditions. Therefore, these techniques will be the primary means employed in the future to deal with coalfield complex structure and lithological exploration.

"Copper and cadmium are removed from the zinc sulphate solution in primary purification by cementation reaction followed by filtration. The solids are sent to the cake leach section where zinc and cadmium are recovered from the copper rich slurry. The copper solids from cake leach are filtered, bagged and sold. In order to achieve a lower cadmium copper cake, an altered process flow is suggested. It is proposed the primary purification be split into two steps for individual removal of copper and cadmium. INTRODUCTIONCopper cake is a product of primary purification, also known as copper and cadmium removal. Copper and cadmium are removed by cementation reaction in four stirred reaction tanks. The slurry is then filtered through Shriver manual plate and frame presses with the solution advancing to the next stage of purification, hot zinc purification (HZP). The solids from primary purification are further processed at the cake leach section where zinc and cadmium are separated from the copper rich slurry. Cadmium and zinc are dissolved in the cold cake leach tanks using spent electrolyte. Cadmium is recovered from this cadmium rich solution by cadmium sponging, leaching and electro-winning circuits. The residue from this cold leach step is further leached using spent electrolyte at a temperature of 85°C. The copper rich solids from hot cake leach are filtered on a drum filter and bagged in 1 ton bulk bags for shipping to buyers.Current assays of copper cake are shown in Table 1. The goal is to produce a copper cake product that is below 0.5% cadmium."

The renewed interest of the past few years in the Appalachian and Michigan oil provinces has not, as yet, created any marked increase in activity in Southwestern Ontario. During 1960 development drilling in-creased somewhat over 1959, but exploratory drilling decreased slightly. More attention was devoted to the deeper horizons, but lake drilling de-creased considerably. Oil production reached a new peak and gas production increased slightly. During 1960 an interesting oil and gas discovery was made in the Cambrian and gas discoveries six miles off-shore in the eastern part of Lake Erie were made in the Clinton-Cataract zone of the Silurian. This paper reviews activities during 1960, summarizes the discoveries made to-date and the pertinent exploration data relating to the prospects of the region and discusses some of the economic aspects of exploration and development.
