Shallow-dipping orebodies (45°–60° dip) present significant challenges for underground longhole stoping, particularly due to limited gravity flow, drill misalignment near the footwall, increased potential for dilution from hanging wall overbreak, and deviation from drill string sagging at shallow angles. These geometrical and operational constraints often lead to unblasted ore wedges and excessive overbreak when standard practices are applied. This study develops a structured, data-driven framework to optimize longhole stoping in such conditions by integrating five key focus areas: (1) mining method selection, (2) stope and drift design, (3) drill and blast optimization, (4) equipment selection, and (5) performance evaluation. The suitability of longitudinal longhole stoping was validated for narrow vein geometries using orebody analytics and prior case studies. Geometric modeling was employed to determine optimal stope height (15–20 m) and stope width (1.5–2.5 m), with drift widths adjusted based on orebody dip to maintain drill access and minimize unbroken ore. Drill and blast design emphasized sequential blasting over multi-ring methods to improve void control, reduce wall damage, and enhance fragmentation. Specific burden and spacing guidelines (e.g., 1.8–2.3 m burden; 2.5–3.0 m spacing) were applied based on stope width and dip angle, and patterns were selected based on geometry—dice-5 for narrow stopes, and 3-hole rows for wider stopes. Drill rigs—including top hammer and ITH models from Sandvik, Epiroc, Boart Longyear and CMAC-Thyssen—were evaluated for compatibility with drift dimensions and alignment accuracy. Equipment was matched based on dip, drift width, and the ability to access the footwall at shallow angles. Sensitivity analysis quantified how changes in geometry, drilling accuracy, and blast design affect ore recovery, dilution, and operating cash flow. Results show that tailored drift and stope geometries, combined with proper blasting and rig selection, can boost ore recovery to over 95% and reduce dilution to below 5% in optimal conditions. This methodology offers a practical and economically optimized solution for shallow-dip mining scenarios.

"In July 2017, Deilmann-Haniel signed a contract with IOO Slavkaliy to sink two 750 metre (m) deep freeze shafts for the Nezhinsky Potash mine in Belarus. This is the second shaft project where this technology is employed after two over 1,000 m deep shafts for a potash project in Saskatchewan, Canada, have been sunk by the application of the Herrenknecht Shaft Boring Roadheader (SBR) technology. Developed to sink shafts for green field projects in soft to medium hard rock, in frozen or unfrozen geology, the machine technology utilizes a roadheader-type cutterhead on a telescopic boom to mechanically excavate the rock, and a pneumatic mucking system to convey the muck from the face into the buckets. This leads to a manless face during the sinking cycle and thus a significant improvement in terms of workplace safety. For the Nezhinsky project, the SBR design was significantly modified in close cooperation between Deilmann-Haniel and Herrenknecht, based on the available experience and the special requirements of the project. Such modifications have been for example the adaptation of the Pneumatic Mucking System to cope with wet material as well as dry as originally planned or the shaft lining moving from shotcrete application to jump for and tubbing installation for which a step-change hands-off tubbing erector for the placement of segments was designed. Further modifications to optimize the machine technology for the requirements during shaft sinking were applied on the two machines for the Slavkaliy project as well as several revisions to match the special project requirements. The SBR is suitable for soft and medium hard rock up to 100 MPa UCS. The main design limits are maximum weight of the machine with 400 tonnes and length or height of 50 m due to the depth of the pre-sink. The Pneumatic Mucking System was changed in all components, sheaves and rope arrangement were redesigned and the concept of the hoist system was also re-engineered. The SBR in Belarus is configured for a daily sinking rate of three metres and all systems behind the cutting boom are not the bottle neck of the whole system. The works on site started in November 2017 including freeze hole drilling, construction works, site setup, installation of hoists winches, permanent headgears and other components required for sinking. The SBRs arrived on site in June/July 2018 and were preassembled on surface and then lowered into the 50 m pre-sink. SBR #1 started full face sinking in mid-December 2018, and SBR #2 in late January 2019. By the end of February 2019, the machines were at 150 m and 100 m depth respectively, and achieved up to 3.6 m/day concrete lined shaft. The SBR and the sinking system, the experiences, problems, technical solutions and performances of this challenging project will be presented in this paper."

Subsequently, Mattabi located its first housing in the Township of Ignace, which is situated 50 miles from the site of the mine and plant. Friction-type hoists have been in operation at Geco Mines Limited since Septtember, 1957. At the end of the year 1963, the skip hoist had handled nearly ~ million tons of ore and waste. In March, 1962, with the deepening of the shaft, the hoisting de11th was increased from 1,450 to 2,450 feet. Operating experience with the hoists, hoist and balance ropes, rope treads and other related equipment is presented. The paper is intended to supplement an earlier one -"Heavy-Duty Friction Hoisting at Geco Mines," by W. M. Harvey (C.I.M. Transactions, Volume LXIII, 1960, pp. 193 -197). General G ECO Mine Limited is located at Manitouwadge, Ontario, approximately 160 miles east of Port Arthur and 190 mile northwest of Sault Ste. Marie. The Company was formed to exploit a copper-zinc-silver orebody, with current ore reserve (1963) of approximately 21 million tons. The production plant was designed to mine and treat 1.25 million tons per annum. The production and service hoists are mounted at-the top of a reinforced concrete tower above the shaft.

"Theoretical notions of mass transfer processes in cascade separation of bulk materials have not been adequately developed as yet (Barsky M.D. 1980). In this paper we have derived linear difference equation of the second order for a cascade with initial feeding top any stage proceeding from mass exchange regularities. The solution of these equations has allowed us to determine quantitative dependences of the material distribution over the cascade stages, which serve the basis of the method of predictive estimate of the process results. We have also examined the model of the material distribution coefficient formation at individual cascade stages.We have checked the adequacy of this model to experimental data. It is noteworthy that the obtained theoretical results are phenomenological, i.e. they can be applied to the processes of separation of different physical nature, e.g. of isotopes, liquid media, gases, etc.INTRODUCTIONRecently, the processes of cascade separation of bulk materials have found broad application in various industries. They ensure a high separation efficiency and high-quality composition of final products. Although specialized literature gives serious attention to cascade processes [1], their theory is not sufficiently developed yet. To achieve optimal organization of this process, we examine mass transfer in a cascade gravitational classifier with stages of identical design."

"Friction stir spot welding of aluminum alloy AA6061-T6 sheets was performed with circular (plunge depths 0.4 and 0.6 mm), square and triangular tool pin (plunge depth 0.4 mm) with constant 0.2 mm shoulder penetration to characterize various zones of weld nugget. It was observed that the depth of the stir zone formed below the tool pin is comparatively similar for different tool pins but wider for circular tool pin. The size of another stir zone formed at the interface of tool pin and a tool shoulder is observed to be larger for triangular and square tool pin due to the higher swept rate. Predicted strain from finite element analysis, calculated strain rate using Zener-Hollomon relationship and experimentally measured grain size distribution indicates severe amount of plastic deformation in-and-around the nugget/spot region. Finer grains in various stir zones were observed than thermo-mechanically and heat affected zones. Grain size (at distribution peaks) in stir zones varied around 2.54 µm to 3.69 µm for different tool pin profiles as compared to base metal grain size of 20 µm. Microhardness results indicate that the welded region is quite softened than base metal and maximum hardness is mostly observed around the thermo-mechanically affected zone.INTRODUCTION Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is widely used for joining the sheets of materials like aluminum, copper, magnesium, etc. The process begins by plunging a rotating tool (generally having a pin and a shoulder) into the sheets to be welded. Continuous stirring of the tool and downward plunging force generates localized heat due to friction at the tool-sheet interface and plastic deformation of the sheet metal. The material gets softened and the plasticized material adjacent to the tool pin starts flowing due to the action of tool rotation and tool plunge thereby causing intermixing and bonding between the overlapped sheets. The tool stirring also promotes grain refinement in the weld nugget associated with high strain, strain rate and thermal cycle. The formation of new microstructure also affects the mechanical properties and efficiency of FSSW joints. Studies also showed that the tool pin design and tool shoulder feature exerts a noteworthy influence on the material flow and intermixing during the FSSW process (Reilly et al., 2015; Hirasawa et al., 2010). Sarkar et al. (2016) studied the material flow and intermixing during FSSW using tracer material method and reported that the size and width of flow zone increases with tool penetration depth. The influence of tool rotational speed on microstructure and stir zone temperature was investigated during FSSW of dissimilar AA6061-AA5754 alloys (Gerlich et al., 2007). They reported that the average grain size in stir zone of AA6061 weld increases with increase in tool rotational speed. In another work, Gerlich et al. (2008) studied the local melting and tool slippage during FSSW of Al alloys. Tool slippage was investigated by calculating the strain rate using Zener-Hollomon relation. Garg and Bhattacharya (2017a) studied the effect of dwell time, tool pin profiles and tool rotational speed on shear strength, microstructure, temperature and strain distribution during FSSW of AA6061. In another work, Garg and Bhattacharya (2017b) analyzed the effect of different tool pins and pinless tools on the shear strength and microstructure during similar and dissimilar FSSW of AA6061-T6 and pure Cu. Chang et al. (2004) proposed mathematical relationship between the average grain size and Zener-Hollomon parameter during friction stir processing of Mg alloy. Solhjoo (2010) presented a mathematical approach to determine the critical strain as a function of peak strain required for initiation of dynamic recrystallization in austenitic stainless steel. Fratini and Buffa (2005) also proposed the numerical model to determine the grain size during continuous dynamic recrystallization phenomenon."

"CANADA'S ECONOMY TODAY is about two-fifths larger than it was six years ago, as measured by the total volume of production of goods and services. Such an achievement has been a rare phenomenon in Canada's first one hundred years. Excluding the forced-draft expansions which took place under war-time conditions, perhaps only the first decade of this century recorded a performance of greater dimensions, when, with massive immigration, the opening up of the West and a powerful array of well-de-signed development policies, the country was looking forward confidently to a great future of nation-building in the twentieth century.What makes Canada's over-all economic advance since 1961 all the more remarkable is that six years ago there was virtually no one in this country who anticipated an expansion of such dimensions. Back in the buoyant conditions of 1956-57, perhaps such an achievement would not have seemed beyond our grasp. After 1957, however, Canada stumbled through an extended period of slow economic growth, high unemployment and substantial and widespread under-utilization of its productive capacity. By the early 1960's, conditioned by the emergence of substantial, persistent and pervasive slack in the economy, t h e r e were few Canadians bold enough to anticipate that their economy was about to embark on a Great Expansion. However, this •is, in fact, what occurred. Beginning early in 1961, Canada moved forward into a sweeping advance which grew into the longest and largest peacetime business expansion in Canada's first century as a nation -a truly great expansion by any standard of measurement. This strong thrust has moved Canada into the front ranks of over-all economic expansion among the industrially advanced nations in the 1960's."

Cemented Paste Backfill has proven to be of critical importance to the operation of a number of Canadian mines, primarily due to the rapid backfilling rate this method permits. In order to improve the efficiency of this backfill system (i.e. optimize binder contents, fill fence design, and the employment of two stage filling strategies) there is a requirement to better understand its geomechanical behaviour. In response, in-situ experiments have been conducted in long-hole stopes to quantify the evolution of total earth pressures and pore pressures at a series of instrumented points within both the core of the backfill and close to fill fences. The deflection of fill fences as a result of paste loading has been measured and additional instrumentation has also been employed to measure cement hydration, negative pore pressures, and blasting induced vibrations within fresh and cured paste backfill. Installing geotechnical instrumentation within an open long-hole stope can be an extremely complex procedure and this paper details the methods that have been successfully employed. Preliminary results are presented, and the pressures induced by backfill with differing binder contents, at a number of different in-stope locations are considered.

"Novel silicate-alginate composite beads containing 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2- ethylhexyl ester (P507) were synthesized and applied for the adsorption of Nd3+ from aqueous solutions. The adsorption amount of Nd3+ has been increased owing to the introduction of P507. The effect of equilibrium pH (pHe), the kinetic and isotherm experiments were investigated. The adsorption reaches equilibrium at 9 h and the maximum uptake capacity is up to 195.4 mg/(g dry adsorbent). The Langmuir isotherm equations are used to describe the adsorption process. Complete desorption can be realized with 0.2 M HCl within 20 min. INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REEs) have found various applications in different domains, such as metallurgy industry, ceramic industry, nuclear fuel control, photo-electro-magnetic functional materials owing to their unique properties. Neodymium (Nd), as a representative of all of the most valuable REEs, is widely used as catalysts, laser crystals, capacitors, rubber additives, Nd-Fe-B magnets, hydrogen storage and so on. Thus, the separation and purification of neodymium is significant. Unfortunately, Nd always coexists with other REEs and selective separation of the individual Nd from the REEs mixtures is still extremely difficult owing to their strictly similar atomic structures and chemical properties.Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) and solid-liquid adsorption (SLA) are the most widely adopted techniques for the separation of REEs in the hydrometallurgical fields. The LLE process is well suited for large-scale continuous operation because of its inherent high capacity and fast kinetics. Nowadays, as a commercial extractant, 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) has been extensively studied for extraction and separation of REEs since it has considerably good extractability and high separation efficiency (Xu et al., 1992). SLA is one of the effective and green separation methods with some prominent advantages, such as easy regeneration of adsorbents, small footprint size, less industrial wastes, higher enrichment factors and column efficiency,rapid solid–liquid separation without emulsion and so on. Hence, the introduction of extractants with excellent performance into adsorbents will integrate the advantages of LLE and SLA (Lee et al., 2009)."

CONSIDERABLE interest has always been taken in Safety-First and First Aid at the Sullivan mine. Even during the early days of development, Safety-First committees periodically held meetings, while lectures in first aid were given to any employees interested in the work. In 1929, a Safety Department was organized, and all accident-prevention and first-aid work was put in charge of a full-time Safety Engineer. An extensive programme has gradually been developed, the value of which can best be indicated by the reduction of the accident rate from 18.4 shifts lost per 1,000 shifts worked for non-fatal accidents and two fatalities for 1927, to 3.24 shifts lost per 1,000 shifts worked and no fatalities for 1936. SUPERVISION All work connected with accident prevention or first aid is under the jurisdiction of a central committee, known as the Accident Prevention Committee, which meets regularly once a month. It consists of all superintendents, department heads, foremen, and shift bosses, and is presided over by the Safety Engineer. At these meetings, the accident records of the previous month are reviewed and all accidents carefully analyzed and discussed. All proposed changes in the safety rules or in the accident tprevention programme are taken up and passed upon. Complaints or suggestions from the Safety-First Committee and the Employees Co-operative Committee, dealing with safety, are discussed and passed upon or a subcommittee is appointed to investigate and take any action found advisable. The question of underground ventilation and dust control, which recently has become a very important problem, always receives considerable attention.

A popular rule in the mining industry is that a property should only be developed if average unit production cost is less than a given proportion of the estimated long-run price of the mineral. This paper provides a comparative analysis of the average cost approach (ACA) with the use of net present value (NPV) as an investment criterion. It is concluded that the ACA is an easily understood and easily applied rule of thumb which may serve as a rough first screening device, for example in the early stages of deposit exploration. Its operational convenience is at the expense of accuracy and validity, and the NPV provides a sounder method of making decisions, especially in the case of marginal deposits.

"Novel rock breakage techniques are becoming more viable and attractive to industry. Microwave energy, as a thermal energy capable of inducing micro cracks through differential heating (therefore expansion) is a technology gaining considerable attention in mineral processing and ore comminution applications. Recently, the use of microwave radiation has been evaluated as a possible avenue for terrestrial and extra-terrestrial drilling applications as well as full face tunneling or rock breaking machines. As part of an overall research on use of microwave in rock breaking systems, the influence of microwave energy on the mechanical properties of common hard rock types as basalt has been investigated. The results revealed that microwave energy irradiation imposes micro and macro cracks to the surface of the rock being irradiated. In explosive free tunneling applications using TBM, jointed and cracked surface of rock eases the cutting process and increases penetration rate. The experimental setups have been simulated with the help of a multi-physics numerical modeling and the results have been compared with practical experiment. The wave propagation of microwave has been simulated and the distances where the power intensity is higher are identified. Experimental and simulation results underlined the potential impact of the use of microwave energy in underground or surface excavation applications such as mining and tunneling. This will also contribute economically when mine-to-mill operation is fully considered to improve the efficiency of rock crusher stages. INTRODUCTIONDuring hard rock breakage (i.e., separation of a piece of a rock from its parent deposit) in mining and civil applications, the performance of mechanical equipment such as tunnel boring machines (TBMs) is limited by high levels of bit wear and maintenance. Preweakening natural rock prior to breaking it by machine is one approach to lower bit wear and maintenance costs. Some preweakening methods apply heat directly or indirectly. For example, flame torch-assisted TBMs (Lauriello et al., 1974; Resource Technology, 1984) have been deemed economical in terms of equipment, but their feasibility is limited by high fuel consumption. Microwave energy could offer several advantages over the flame torch method: it does not produce emissions or increase fuel consumption (electricity source is available on the machine), and is easy to control (quick power on and off)."

"Early in mine development at Quintette Coal Limited major problems were encountered with the fleets of primary equipment which seriously hampered production. These major fleets (cable shovels, hydraulic shovels, hydraulic drills and electric trucks) have consequently been the focal point of maintenance efforts. Some were prototypes in the Canadian mining scene and brought with them new concerns to test their skills. The problems were studied and the category and areas which were having the greatest impact on the reliability of the equipment were determined. Once defined, priorities were established and a program was initiated which was designed to accomplish a resolution. Resulting from implementation of this systematic approach, over the past three and one-half years, the fleets are now giving good reliability and industry standard availabilities. Along with these significant achievements, cost per operating hour on some of the equipment fleets has decreased substantially and continue a downtrend through 1987. This paper identifies the problems and describes the resolutions. IntroductionIn the early years of the mine development, Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) experienced production shortfalls due to problems with the major excavator and haulage fleets. A large fleet of hydraulic excavators had been purchased, and QCL was among the first northern users of all hydraulic blasthole drills. They were also using some prototype equipment and encountered problems which were not common on other types of equipment or were unknown.Because of these unique problems and lack of experience from other mines to draw on, an analytical approach was taken to areas and associated causes of the delays affecting the availability and reliability of equipment. This was done by dividing the equipment downtime into seven classifications of delays, i.e. maintenance, electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, damage, service and preventative maintenance, and tires; and then each was expressed as a percentage of total downtime. Subsequently each of the delay classification was divided into categories e.g. electrical to six categories - wheel motors, main alternator, relays, cards, no propel, lighting and 24 V system. Then, the basis for further study had been established.From this preliminary analysis of historic records, it was possible to determine the areas which were causing the majority of the downtime. These areas were then analyzed to evaluate causes and to determine possible solutions to the problem s. This paper addresses the major fleets, their problems and eventual solutions. "SummaryThe results of this investigation indicate that the gold in the cyanide tailing of refractory gold cyanides is occluded in fused •particles formed during roasting. This conclusion was reached following microscopic examination of calcines produced at various furnace temperatures with different atmospheres, and a •comparison with calcines produced by decomposing samples of completely sulphated concentrate under conditions such that the maximum particle temperature varied between 6•50°C. and 1,100°C. This comparison showed that the particle temperature during a normal roast may be several hundred degrees higher than the furnace atmosphere, or that the fusion is associated with a low melting (950°C.) eutectic mixture of FeO and FeS.Because of the unavoidable particle fusion during a furnace roast, and because low particle temperatures are essential for gold extraction by cyanidation, aqueous medium oxidation under high oxygen pressures was studied. Gold recovery from calcines produced by this means was over 98 •per cent •compared with a maximum of 80 per cent from furnace calcines.IntroductionMANY arsenical gold ores are called 'refractory' because much ' of the gold cannot be satisfactorily extracted by cyaniding the raw ore or concentrate. "The availability of fresh water to meet present and future needs in Ontario is of concern to an increasing number of people. Rain and snow are the source of our potable water and provide, on the average, some 180,-000 billion gallons of water annually. This amount is reduced to 94 billion gallons a day as a result of the evaporation and transpiration of water and our inability to construct the necessary reservoirs for capturing surplus stream flow.The water used for domestic, irrigation, public supply and industrial purposes amounts to some 7 billion gallons daily at present and will reach 21 billion gallons daily by the year 2000; however, only about one-fifth of the water used is actually consumed, and this, along with the possibilities of water re-use, improves the water supply picture still further.The need for adequate pollution control has accompanied industrial and urban expansion and is an important factor in the extent to which our surplus water is used. In the 10-year period since the formation of the Ontario Water Resources Commission, the cost of water and sewage works constructed in the Province has exceeded one billion dollars. A special effort is now being made to control the industrial pollution situation.Numerous federal and provincial agencies are engaged in hydrologie studies in the Province, providing in-formation of benefit to those involved with water resources management."

"Mg alloy has a high specific strength, however, their thickness reduction was limited on most parts because of their poor stiffness. Since the modulus of rigidity is an intrinsic property, improvement of modulus of rigidity to the enhancement of stiffness is impossible. Therefore, the modification of shape and structure is available method to enhance the stiffness of real part fabricated by Mg alloy sheet. There are many thin walled parts which are located in outer section of electromagnetic system.Poor stiffness is often shown on wide surface area part with steel sheet, which has also high modulus of rigidity. In these cases, various groove patterns are used to increase the stiffness of part. However, some different methods have to be used when general groove pattern can’t be used. So, we would like to propose some new method to high stiffness on thin walled precision forging of Al or Mg alloys.An effect of proposed method on stiffness enhancement can be confirmed by fabrication of prototypes as well as structure and forming analysis based on FEM."

YOU will likely recall the accomplishments of the International Geophysical Year of 1957, with its polar expeditions, the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts and the spectacular launchings of the first artificial earth satellites. Our know ledge of the exterior of the earth was greatly increased by this international, friendly, cooperative scientific investigation. The Inter-national Union of Geodesy and Geo-physics has now been joined by the new International Union of Geological Sciences in sponsoring a similar study of the earth's interior. The program will extend from January, 1962 until December. 1964, and is known as the International Upper Mantle Project. During the T.G.Y studies of the interior of the earth were relatively neglected, even though the same international •Cooperation in obtaining simultaneous world-wide observations, by similar instruments, is required to locate and study earth-quakes, for example, as it is to study the earth's upper atmosphere. The upper mantle is 1•emote from man, as it extends from a depth of about 10 km. to perhaps 1000 km., but its practical importance is great.
